Fil-Am leads State Assembly race Rob Bonta may serve as the first Fil-Am to serve in the State Assembly Rob Bonta, a Filipino-American Oxford and Yale Law graduate, may yet be the first Fil-Am to serve in the California State Assembly after Tuesday’s elections over showed that he garnered more than 50 percent of the votes cast over fellow Democrat Abel Guillen for the 18th Assembly District. With 100 percent of precinct reporting, Bonta garnered 50.79 percent with 50,028 votes cast to his name as against 48,470 for his rival Guillen. WASHINGTON, Nov 7, 2012 (AFP) – President Barack Obama enjoyed soaring support from Asian Americans to win another term, a survey said Wednesday, as voters elected new faces to Congress including its first Hindu lawmaker. A poll conducted for community groups found that 72 percent of Asian Americans voted for Obama on Tuesday, a gain from the two-thirds support he won in 2008 and part of a major shift toward the Democrats over the past 20 years. While small in total, Asian Americans are the fastest growing racial group in the United States and made up 3.4 percent of the electorate on Tuesday, up from 2.7 percent four years ago.
