TEAMTALK
teamtalk 02.10 THIS VIBRANT SHORT MONTH ‘Om Swastiastu...’ Welcome to the Indonesian archipelago and welcome to our February 2010 edition of Bali & Beyond! At last, we settled in to our new office premises on Jalan Dewi Sri, and as this issue goes to press, we had a great deal of time fiddling around with those new phone extension numbers. No worries, we’re getting there! But all in all, we’ve survived another deadline, and here it is for you to enjoy. To start off with, this month’s Craft & Culture reminds us that this year’s February 14 is special. Not only do lovers enjoy the celebration the date is best known for worldwide, but the date is also an important calendar marker for the Chinese who celebrate their New Year. So, do you have any itinerary plans for this February 14? Stay in-room and stick to the TV guides, go out with your loved ones, gather with the family, go out clubbing, or perhaps… head out to see prayers at a history rich klenteng or Chinese temple? Through Invite & Indulge, we celebrate with the tastes of Asian cuisine at Tao Restaurant. Following a successful three years, the restaurant in Tanjung Benoa has become a reference for Asian cuisine with scores of loyal diners. Now, expanding its service to an ever dynamic market, Tao has further landed its presence in Legian with its Tao Beach House. Profile & Portrait starts off with Lovina Beach, approximately 9 kilometers west of the town of Singaraja, the capital of the Buleleng Regency in North Bali. It is the foremost tourism highlight in the area. Visitors have flocked to the area for its rich history, natural beauty of black volcanic sand coasts and placid seas, as well as its famous dolphins.
tongue is spelled with the letter ‘v’. This February, or the month of celebrating love, find out more about Lovina: “Love Indonesia” and our profile of the man who is also known as the founder of Lovina, Anak Agung Pandji Tisna. You may find through Pondering Point, that the United Nation Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) this year has targeted three sites in Bali to be included into its World Heritage list. These are namely the rice fields of Jatiluwih in the regency of Tabanan, the streams of the River Pakerisan in Gianyar and the Subak irrigational organization of the Taman Ayun traditional village in Badung. Our Action & Attraction this month is about our experience in learning a bit of wave riding. Bali’s beaches easily become favorite spots for various water sport activities due to the dynamic range and perfect sets of waves. Waves for the avid surfer to enjoy, spending days out in the surf carving out agile maneuvers. Yet riding waves can be done with more than the common surfboard. Rather it can be done in a multitude of fun forms such as Stand Up Paddle (SUP) and body boarding, which we got to try out and learn one fine day with the Rip Curl School of Surf at their new site at the InterContinental Resort Bali in Jimbaran.

Klenteng is an Indonesian terminology for Chinese temples. In the Hokkian dialect they are referred to as Bio or Miao. One source of the word klenteng comes from Kwam Im Teng, a place for the worship of the merciful goddess Kwam Im that was first built in Java around the year 1650.

Another old klenteng not far from there is the Vihara Dharmayana Buddhist monastery or referred by many as Leeng Gwan Bio in Kuta. It is located only a several hundred meters from Kuta beach. Its design is unique and anyone would easily identify it as a Chinese temple. Bali boasts numerous klentengs spread across various locations. Some of them are remnants from Chinese merchants who came to the island several hundreds of years ago, but some are also newly built. The klenteng Caow Eng or Caow Eng Bio in Tanjung Benoa is one evidence. This Klenteng was built some 300 years ago by a merchant. It is said that he frequently dropped by and traded in the Tanjung Benoa area. The merchant was also very religious and eventually built a place of worship for Tien Sang Sen Muk (goddess of trade), Yati Kong (ancestral deities), Suiew Wie Sen Niang (goddess of the seas), and the ‘sea dragon deity’. The deities would have aided him in his success of business and safety on the high seas. It happens to be the island’s oldest Chinese temple. This is also confirmed by Mangku Ki Sun, the pemangku or temple keeper of this local klenteng who took up the duty handed down through generations. However no one is able to provide accurate data of an age of a Chinese temple. Generally klentengs in Bali do not have written chronicles that hint to its distant past. It might be possible that an oldest klenteng existed far before that, due to the centuries of China-Bali relationship prior. Finding Klenteng Caow Eng is easy. The lineups of hotels and water sport activities along the Tanjung Benoa coast delivers us right to this historical building. It is located nearby a mosque and the Dalem Ning temple. Another old klenteng not far from there is the Vihara Dharmayana Buddhist monastery or referred by many as Leeng Gwan Bio in Kuta. It is located only several hundred meters from Kuta beach. Its design is unique and anyone would easily identify it as a Chinese temple. You might be confused why a Buddhist monastery or ‘vihara’ would also be referred to as a klenteng. Klenteng and viharas are basically different from one another both in architecture, worship and function. Klenteng is all about China, dominantly red, with typical dragon statues and lions and burning incense. Meanwhile a vihara is a place for Buddhist worship, not strictly only among Chinese descent, but more universal. The difference between klenteng and vihara then became ambiguous due to the communist incident that occurred in Indonesia in 1965. Each Chinese descendent was deemed suspicious of communist relations. The outcome of the incident was the ban of Chinese culture since the year 1967. Many klentengs then changed names with Sanskrit and Pali and then enlisted permits under the Buddhist religion. Kong Hu Cu or Confucianism was widely readmitted after year 2000 during the presidency of Abdurrahman Wahid. Several

ALLIES IN ART Kendra Gallery of Contemporary Art presents “Transubstantiation,” a collaborative exhibition by S. Teddy Darmawan and Daniel Flanagan through March 7. The artists define their work, both individually and in concert, in this exhibition. The two first collaborated over a year ago, yet it is from these humble collaborations that the new work finds its roots. Kendra Gallery of Contemporary Art. Kendra Gallery, Jl.
