retreat as head of guest services. Participating in the yoga classes, he was introduced to a number of inspirational instructors who inspired him to pursue this journey towards health and wellbeing.
Time to Say Hello to Your Toes! Let’s face it. Many of us spend hours in the gym or pounding the pavement to build our muscles, improve cardio fitness and generally keep the bulge at bay. But if you are anything like me and tend to forget about stretching and flexibility and focus more on torturous toning, the thought of touching our toes or participating in that occasional game of tipsy Twister (stop smirking, we’ve all been there!) can be cause for concern and more than a few cackles. It’s one thing to build muscles but maintaining flexibility is also important and a balance between the two is vital. Yoga is an ideal way to develop strength as well as gaining flexibility along with a more holistic approach to a healthy body. Finns Recreation Club offers three different yoga classes as part of its weekly fitness schedule: held 10am on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for ninety minutes. It’s perfect timing really as you can still fit in an earlier Pump, TRX class or gym session and head straight into yoga to stretch and loosen those tortured limbs. Classes take place in the spacious air conditioned fitness
studio. With the onset of wet season there is no need to worry about weather conditions and new yogi’s can ease into their practice in air
conditioned comfort. One of these sessions is led by local yoga guru, I Wayan Wistika or better known to many as Marcus. To those of us who have ever attended one of his classes, Marcus needs little introduction. With a friendly manner and easygoing style, he encourages a relaxed and calming ambience in his classes and any beginners’ concerns are immediately allayed as he emphasizes participants listen to their bodies and only do as much as they comfortably can. As only experienced instructors do, he suggests different options for each pose, allowing for every level of expertise within each class. Marcus pays attention to form and style, ensuring an injury free experience and one that will leave you amazed at how you just managed to “kiss your knees” when only ninety minutes earlier you arrived, convinced that even your fingertips would struggle to greet your toes. Balinese born and bred in Tabanan, Marcus’s yogic journey began during a period of employment at a local village yoga
A Natural Alternative to Safe Sun Protection Bali’s sun can be punishing. It doesn’t take much time on the beach to feel the effects of its rays and the resulting sunburn can quickly play havoc with holiday plans. With plenty of sunscreens available on the market it can be difficult to decide on the right one for your skin type and chemical free products can be hard to find. THANK ME LATER is a naturally based, broad spectrum SPF 30 sun lotion made with love in Bali - Island of the Gods. Launched in early 2016, this product is sold locally on the island and is available for online orders with worldwide shipping. THANK ME LATER offers you a 2 in 1 product, moisturising your skin while providing SPF protection and has been created for every day face and body use. The formula is extremely light and non-greasy – making it the perfect alternative to your daily moisturiser, leaving you feeling and smelling fab and fresh. The travel-sized 70ml tubes stand out in the crowd, with funky sketches characterising the three available scents. Pick you favourite in their current range, from fresh Aloe Vera & Cucumber, sweet Pear & Green Tea or delicious Coconut & Lavender. THANK ME LATER SPF 30 contains no paraffin or parabens,
no mineral oil or colorants, and delivers safe and effective broad-spectrum protection. The lotion’s base is a coconut and almond oil, aloe vera extract and vitamin E mixture, and is capped with UVA and UVB filters to provide sufficient protection from the sun.
He went on to teach yoga at this retreat, has taken part in numerous international seminars, local courses, the annual Bali Spirit festival and has spent a number of years enhancing the health and wellbeing of hotel guests with yoga classes at the prestigious Comoshambala Hotel, The Chedi Clubs in Ubud and Jimbaran, as well as The Legian in Seminyak. Along with classes at Finns Rec Club, he also teaches privately throughout Southern Bali and continues to hone his craft, broadening his teaching styles to include Restorative Yoga, Vinyasa Flow and of course, yoga for beginners. With more than 17 years of yoga experience, Marcus has somewhat of a devoted following. “Yoga is my lifestyle - As you practise it more, it changes your life, from what you eat to how you live. And if you keep practising, it changes your soul.” Pop into Finns Rec Club to experience yoga for yourself on either Monday, Wednesday or Friday @ 10am. I promise your hamstrings will thank you! Platinum and Gold Finns Bali members enjoy the benefit of free classes, including Marcus’s yoga. Social Memberships are also available starting from only Rp 400,000 for a weekly membership. With natural healing properties, the lotion feeds your skin the goodness it needs during sun exposure. High in antioxidants, Sweet Almond Oil and Vitamin E ensure your skin is protected from oxidative stress and UV radiation damage, keeping it soft and supple. Coconut Oil hydrates and soothes inflamed skin with its high anti-inflammatory properties. Finally, cool Aloe Vera extract acts as a protective barrier on the skin, replenishing moisture and helps heal damaged skin quicker. THANK ME LATER is 100% cruelty-free and provides the best possible choice for sun lovers looking for a more natural alternative to sun protection. Excessive sun exposure increases the risk of skin cancer dramatically but fortunately we can reduce this risk by 80% simply by regularly applying sun care products. A daily moisturiser with SPF is a year-round beauty bag essential, preventing wrinkles and premature ageing as the suns rays can be damaging on even the cloudiest of days. Its light and fragrant solution will keep your skin hydrated and protected from the moment you step out the door! Duck into Finns Beach Club Boutique and grab a tube today…….. You’re welcome! EARLY DETECTION WITH ALFA THERMOGRAM by Shari Wouldn’t it be nice if we knew ahead of time of any potential time bombs lurking in our bodies threatening our health? Probably the biggest fear of most people these days is developing cancer. Most scientists say that everyone has cancer cells in their bodies. So why does one person never get diagnosed with cancer and another person is? There are many reasons for cancer developing – it’s a complex disease with many root causes which need holistic solutions to resolve – hence the great value of thermo mapping. Now you can look into the future of your health with thermo mapping equipment such as Alfa Thermo diagnostics, which can diagnose p o t e n t i a l imbalances and threats to the body. It can screen for p r e - c a n c e r conditions and for those with cancer can determine some of the root causes. This Point-Infrared disease signature device is CE cleared (Europe, Worldwide and FDA cleared). Radiologists have found the Alfa system as useful as an MRI in creating an instantaneous report of organ and breast health. This system can identify over 45 disorders by mathematical comparison to over 100,000 known clinical cases. It’s also a great tool to check on breast health for early detection without being invasive or painful. The truth is breast cancer rates are rising worldwide. If the cancer is detected early usually the chances are good of eliminating it. Until recently the only two methods of screening are mammogram and ultra-sound. Mammograms are able to identify tumors but can’t determine if malignant or benign. You can only have a screening every six months because of radiation. Retakes can create tumor-terrains. Ultra sound is unable to distinguish between a cyst and malignancy. Now the latest technology thermography uses the SpinalReflex Arc and the nervous system’s connections between the internal tissues and organs. There’s no radiation and tests can be done frequently to monitor any changes in a tumor. It identifies suspicious factors that can help to change the whole body terrain and chemistry to disable tumor vulnerability. Earlier this year I had a mammogram in Bali, which surprised me with two calcifications showing up on my right breast. Having overcome cancer in my left breast many years ago, this new screening threw me into a Deja-vu tailspin. The doctor at the hospital wanted me to go see the oncologist and have a biopsy right away. I wasn’t going to fall into the fear factor this time. Instead I called friends to start some energy healing, believing this would eliminate this threat. For two months I went to my friends for healing. I knew I was under a lot of stress since the beginning of the year, finding out that my father was diagnosed with cancer and given 3-6 months to live. However almost six months later I had another mammogram done in Sri Lanka, fully expecting it to be clear. Disappointed, it was the same. The doctor thought it was benign but wanted me to have a biopsy to make sure. Still I held off, believing there was an alternative. At the end of August while having a colonics treatment in Ubud, Nigel McFarland (head of the wellness center) asked about my dad and breast concerns. After explaining what was going on, he told me that they were getting this new equipment that may possibly give me a clearer picture of what was going on with my breast and perhaps avoid a biopsy. This sounded great and perhaps the answer I was seeking. On October 3, I drove to Ubud to be one of the first persons in Bali to try out this new equipment called Alfa Thermography. This is the first one in Bali. Sitting in the lounge of the wellness center, the doctor explained how the equipment works. Two tests would be conducted, the first one with my body in an active state. The small wand would touch 120 points on my body to detect the skin temperature. After this, I would wait
for ten minutes in the cool room in a resting state. Then the probably not, but there is inflammation on my cerebral cortex which could cause Alzheimer’s. There was a small computer on the table on the print outs of my body and graphs. I was over whelmed with an image of a body on the screen with numerous points, by all this knowledge. I thought I was pretty healthy, apart mostly on the face, breasts and abdomen. Only four points from my right breast. He said if I followed the changes and were on the back. The nurse took the wand and lightly touched come back and have another test I could reverse all of these each point on my face. This was pain-less. A beep indicated potential threats to my health. ARC STAYING ON TOP It’s always a pleasure going to ARC Anti-aging Clinic and checking out their latest innovations. They use the latest high tech equipment and have two highly qualified doctors on staff. Their expanding dental clinic now has five brilliant dentists using the latest equipment and a German technology dental lab on site. I went in recently to have my teeth cleaned and was amazed how quickly and proficiently the dentist was finished in just twenty minutes. He also checked my teeth for any problems and informed me with a smile that I was taking very good care of my teeth. No problems. Make an appointment for a free panoramic ex-ray and consultation to keep your teeth in prime condition. Arc’s latest facial comes from Canada with certified organic products for the Express facial. This is the perfect perk for a fresh clean face. Forty five minutes of bliss of cleansing, scrubbing and a really long facial massage before the mask had me so relaxed that I was falling asleep. My face was glowing with health afterwards.
remaining gel and placed protective eye covers over my eyes for the low light laser portion of the treatment. Again this was performed with very light touches over the area with the laser to stimulate collagen production. She told me to avoid going in the sun the remainder of the day and applied sunscreen. She also told me to not have any facials or face massage for the next two weeks for the maximum effect. I was reminded to wear sunscreen and drink two liters of water to hydrate my circulation. The whole treatment only took forty minutes. Looking in the mirror I could already see the skin on my jaw line and neck looking firmer. It’s advised not to drink any alcohol the day before otherwise your skin will be red following the treatment. Two things I love about the Sygmalift is not only is it really effective but also painless. You can’t beat that. New to Arc Anti- aging Clinic is the latest Aptos threads for an effective lifting to the face. Aptos Thread Lift is a non-surgical procedure that instantly lifts and firms moderate saggy tissues. Absorbable bi-directional barbed threads are inserted under the skin with a needle to lift sagging skin on the brow, cheeks (deep nasolabial lines), eyebrows, lower eyelids, jowls and neck. If you are not ready for a surgical face-lift, then this treatment is for you. This procedure is carried out under local anesthesia, takes one hour and the effects last approximately 1 – 2 years, depending on the patient’s age at the time of the procedure, the degree of sagging and the number of threads used. ARC Anti-aging has everything to meet all of your beauty requirements to stay young looking – be it: Botox, fillers, lifting threads, facials, slimming treatments and dental work.

For a firming and lifting treatment for my face I met with Dr. Chandra to evaluate my skin and see which part of my face required some treatment. She commented that my skin was looking very good but the jaw and upper neck area could use some help. She suggested the Sygmalift which uses a combination of ultra-sound and cold laser for a significant result. She took a few photos to use for comparison for before and after shots.

It uses focal and flux high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) and cold laser technology to encourage collagen stimulation by tightening and lifting the muscles. Sygmalift© reshapes your facial balance by sculpting your chin, neck, jaw line and nasolabial fold. It is also very effective for significantly reducing that stubborn and saggy double chin, lifting the eye area and smoothing out the fine wrinkles around the eyes. The Sygmalift body fat and cellulite hand piece is especially effective for contouring the body by smoothing out fat and cellulite on the tummy, “love handles” and thigh areas. Immediately after one treatment you’ll see some results but it will gradually improve over time up to four to six weeks. It’s recommended to have another treatment a month later and a third time the following month for maximum results lasting a year! Just three treatments will give you great results for a year.

Beauty & Health A nurse escorted me into a private and clean treatment room and handed me a purple smock to wear for my treatment and then had me lie down and covered me with a cozy blanket. The nurse then applied ultra-sound gel over the areas to be treated. While lying comfortably she began slowly pressing with mild pressure and gliding the wand in an outward movement from my chin towards my ear. Absolutely no pain. Once she completed one side she moved to the opposite side of my face. Once both sides were finished she cleaned off the

12 FINANCIAL PREDICTIONS – SHOULD WE BELIEVE THEM? Wouldn’t it be nice if we could predict the future? It might not all be good news but at least we could plan our lives accordingly. It would certainly come in helpful when making investments but I will come back to that later.
the price was £1,265 (a small gain; not a fall to $700!) Fast forward to this month; at the time of writing it was $1,288. So there were no dramatic moves in gold at all. And the US Dollar hasn’t collapsed.
Firstly let’s examine the most famous predictor of the future of all time, none other than the 16th century French visionary Nostradamus. In 1555 he wrote a book called ‘Les Propheties’ (The Prophesies) in which hundreds of quatrains, some rhyming, some not, foretold future major events that would shake the world. Here is a purported translation of one of them:
The real aim of articles of this nature, and you will find plenty on the Internet, is to appeal to the human emotions of fear and greed which will lead many readers to reach for their credit cards by the time they get to the end of the promotional videos.
“Two steel birds will fall from the sky on the Metropolis / The sky will burn at forty-five degrees latitude / Fire approaches the great new city / Immediately a huge, scattered flame leaps up / Within months, rivers will flow with blood / The undead will roam the earth for little time.”
While both terms may be used to describe the same, a forecast is probably better understood. An example is the weather forecast. It is based on known facts and historical data. By and large the forecasts are fairly accurate but we know they cannot always be right, and sometimes they are badly wrong.
These words were interpreted to reflect the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center in 2001. Nostradamus also predicted the Great Fire of London, the French Revolution, the rise of Hitler, the first man on the moon and the assassination of Kennedy. Or did he? His predictions were in vague terms and could relate to many events. His writings make fascinating reading and continue to provoke many discussions but they do not stand up to factual analysis and the translations are sometimes questionable. For example, steel had not been invented in the 16th century. Take a look at the quatrain below. Can you read anything into it? “Whole peoples will move to fairer shires / while others flee from water, wind and fires / As one rash ruler causes hills to shake / another’s ramblings keep the world awake” Being sensational helps if you want to attract attention Many have tried to follow in footsteps. Nostradamus’ Predicting the end of the world is a popular way to get noticed, even if it means a bit of explaining has to be done the day after it didn’t happen. But beware of those making sensational predictions about the financial markets; more often than not they have a hidden agenda. Below is an article presented by one purveyor of doom, the publisher of an online subscription newsletter, kindly forwarded to me by a concerned client. ‘Gold warning – Why to take immediate action!’ ‘Dear Reader, This is an urgent warning for anyone who has gold investments. The gold price could be weeks away from a major bust that will see it sink to as low as $700 an ounce. My advice: get out of your speculative gold investments now. ....Watch my video now before it’s too late............’ The above warning appeared in mid-February 2017. Fast forward four months to mid-June. Out came a new headline and story with a surprising recommendation at the end: ‘The End of Globalism: America Bows Out – The Dollar Dies’ ‘Donald Trump’s foreign policy has been decidedly insular ever since his early campaign days. And since getting elected, he’s gone out of his way to insult and alienate every single one of America’s closest allies. There’s an underground fissure that’s about to shift, unleashing unimaginable destruction on stocks and perhaps your accounts. Only few will escape the bloodbath, and those who do will come out richer than ever. If you want to be one of them, click here to watch the official video to the very end. The death of the dollar will be a years-long phenomenon that will alter the fabric of our society. So if you want me to cut to the chase, it’s this....‘The dollar is dead. Buy gold’ So in the space of just four months the newsletter went from a panic-sell position on gold to a panic-buy. So what in fact has happened to the price of gold since February when the writer advised to sell gold immediately? In mid-February the price was $1,228 an ounce. In mid-June

The difference between predictions and forecasts
C/NV/G-30 Aug. 17
Famously, a British weather forecaster, Michael Fish, once stated jokingly since such events were almost unheard of in the UK, that the South of England was not expecting a hurricane. Ironically a hurricane force storm really did hit the next day. But the forecast was based on the best information available at the time. Forecasts are now much more accurate. The same is true of financial forecasting except that the variables in the financial world are even greater than those in meteorology. Sensational articles like the ones I have quoted are not forecasts; they are crude marketing ploys to take advantage of people with limited knowledge of the financial markets. Forecasts by independent analysts on the other hand are based on facts and carefully thought-through assumptions. They may prove wrong but the intent is to give some guidance. Where fund managers and promoters are concerned they will inevitably paint their products in a positive light. This is understandable provided they do not deliberately mislead but their bias should also be taken into account when making investment decisions.

So what predictions can we make now? For one, Mount Agung is going to erupt. But even the experts don’t know when. It could be this week, next month, next year or maybe in 50 years’ time. But due to the nature of volcanoes the prediction is a pretty sure one. The hard part is the timing. Some financial predictions are safe ones too: - There will be a stock market correction. A fairly easy one after a long ‘bull run’ but timing is the issue again. - There will be a global pensions crisis. Another safe one given changing demographics, increased longevity and the fact that very few people are saving enough for retirement. But let’s get back to that second quatrain. Could you relate it to actual happenings? Uncanny? Not really; Nostradamus didn’t write it. I just did. So be wary of predictions!

MOUNTAIN BIKE NEWS 2017 Baturduro - 18-19 November With a smouldering Mt Agung as a backdrop, the Baturduro extreme mountain bike enduro race will take place on the weekend of 18 & 19 November up in Kintamani in the Batur Caldera. Classes are men, women and juniors up to 17 years. For those not in the know, enduro, a contraction of the word “endurance”, mountain biking is a type of mountain bike racing where the downhills are timed, and the uphills are not. Riders are timed in stages that are primarily downhill, with neutral “transfer” stages in between. The transfer stages usually must be completed within a time limit, but are not part of the accumulated time. The winner is the rider who accumulates the lowest combined time from the timed downhill sections. The Baturduro takes place over two days and consists of 3 to 5 timed stages daily which take place on technically demanding, generally descending terrain of the caldera and lava flows. These stages are linked by predominantly ascending “transfer” stages. Although a rider’s performance on the physically demanding transfer stages does not affect his or her result, they often have a time limit, or a latest allowed arrival time for the start of the next stage. The origins of enduro mountain bike racing are said to be inspired from both car rally such as the World Rally Championship and motorbike enduro racing. QUICK REVIEW
The Cuisine of Texas! The Melting Pot has for many years been one of the largest and most complete sports bars in Bali. What many do not realize is that it also serves some of the best Tex-Mex cuisine in Bali. The place was always big [an ex supermarket] but now the badminton courts behind have been taken over and a mezzanine level to Melting Pot added. The two bars [20 bar stools + 15] must just about be the longest in BaIi, The place now also includes dedicated eating areas, booths and tables. Or you can dine the American way and eat at the bar. In fact The Melting Pot serves all the most popular Texan dishes, not just Tex-Mex. Top of the list is their famous Texan Chilli Con Carne, a thick well-spiced luscious stew of beef and beans. Every September The Melting Pot holds a Chilli Cookoff, Texas Chili Cookoffs are a tradition in Texas and at The Melting Pot, with chefs competing to make the best traditional chili (CASI), freestyle chili, and vegetarian chili. It’s an all day event with live music and a chance to taste all the chili on offer and vote for your favorite. Proceeds benefit charity. The Texan Chilli served at The Melting Pot [pictured], every day, is the way it should be according to their Texan owner Greg Berlin. Another Texan special is a dish from Louisiana, Gumbo. This is a spicy stew of chicken chunks and slices of pork sausage combined with okra [from where it gets it name from the Bantu language], celery and scallions. It is served in a bowl with slices of garlic bread. It leaves a warming taste that stays with you for hours, I love it!. Quesadillas are found on many menus in Bali as are the Indian Samosa, Thai Tom Yum Goong and Yum Neau [beef salad]. All have one thing in common; they taste nothing like the original. The Quesadillas at The Melting Pot are true to the original traditional Mexican Quesadilla. They are two warmed tortillas with a variety of different fillings in between, cut into

Other Quesadillas can be a spicy beef, a vegetarian one with beans or a gourmet chorizo [with refried beans and a drizzle of that gumbo sauce]. All of the quesadillas have cheddar cheese blended into the mix. The Beef Enchillada Platter is very popular, ground beef wrapped in a corn tortilla, topped with a chilli sauce, cheddar cheese and finely chopped onions. It is served with Spanish rice and refried beans.

Hot Dogs are as American as apple pie! At the Melting Pot a jumbo-sized pork sausage is encased in a toasted bun. If you prefer the European version then there is a German Bratwurst, also on a toasted bun and you can order sauerkraut and/or Dijon mustard as accompaniments to the Bratwurst. The whole world loves a burger, and this one is a whopper! Called The Ultimate Cheeseburger it consists of a 200gm patty [beef & pork] topped with melted cheddar in a toasted sesame seed bun with onion, tomato and lettuce. No Texan restaurant could survive without offering plates of quality Ribs, these are baby backs with an authentic BBQ sauce; tangy and mildly spicy. The sauce is so good I could eat it on toast instead of marmalade. Being a bar there are also many great bar snacks, which can also be enjoyed as entrees with a meal. Chicken Strips, a bowl of 4, breaded fingers, with your choice of BBQ or a Thai sweet chilli sauce. Popcorn, Onion Rings and Cheese & Crackers are all quite standard. Then there are Wedges and many different servings of Fries [plain, curly, cheesy or chilli cheese]. Or you can order a bowl of that Texas Chilli with a large portion of tortilla chips. Eat it via the dipping of the chips instead of a spoon, great bar fodder! Back to Tex-Mex, traditional Nachos, crisp tortilla chips, chilli beef and cheddar cheese. For the vegetarians there are Bean Quesadillas, Mac & Cheese and a vegetarian version of the famous Texas Chilli. No, this is not fine dining, rather hearty meals that ooze with taste. Amazing quality and not what you normally find in sports bar, this is one of the best!

Ryoshi is the first choice when it comes to basic Japanese cuisine. Think Japanese and you almost certainly think of Sushi and Sashimi, even though there are many other dishes in this unique cuisine, The critical factor with both of these dishes is that the fish must be FRESH, and the dish prepared ‘to order’ not hours, or even days, before and refrigerated. With the constant turnover of seafood required by this group [5 Ryoshi restaurants, Ubud, Sanur, Kuta, Tuban and their HQ in Seminyak, plus the Sakanaya and Ramen Boy outlets] the product here is always fresh. At Ryoshi the offerings are of unbelievable value, my favourite is the Pisang combo [pictured], 12 pieces of sushi [the maki roll is cut into three which makes 14 in my book]. It always tastes best fresh! At Ryoshi you can sit and watch it being made. It arrives accompanied by a small dish, a lump of wasabi [often referred to as Japanese horseradish but tasting more like a hot mustard] on its side, and a little pile of gari [sweet thinly sliced young ginger] on the edge of the sushi board. Tip some soy [always on the table in a small jug] and edge some of the wasabi in, to your taste! Place a complete sushi in the soy/wasabi mix so it can soak into the rice base, then with chopsticks, or even fingers if you must, eat and savour the exquisite taste. Follow with a small slice of the gari, and a sip of whatever you are drinking. My kind of lunch! Ryoshi has a number of different combination boards of sushi and sashimi [raw fish] or a combo of both. Other raw fish specials include their Tataki which is a Japanese salad of raw fish, a Tuna Carpaccio or Aji Tataki, a type of mackerel tartar. Chirashi Sushi is a bowl of various raw fish draped over sushi rice.
Warung Little Bird is easy to miss. On Jln. Danau Tamblingan, close to Maybank at Sanur’s northern end, it looks like a typical small local warung. Big difference is that it always seems to be full of westerners. Their coffees are a feature [hot, cold, frozen, flavoured or with syrups added] very good and are definitely the cheapest price to be found in this area. Local cuisine is all the go, nasi goreng, mie goreng/kuah, gado-gado and sayur hijau. Meat dishes include the Javanese opor ayam, Sumatra’s rendang, Bali’s ayam and babi kecap. What ever you order also get a small IndoChinese omelette fuyung hay on the side, only Rp 20,000. You may have to wait for a table.
Komugi Bakery operates a small café at the front of the Papaya Supermarket, Jln. Patih Jelantik, Kuta. A 2nd is soon to open at the new Renon Mall. For some unknown reason restaurants and cafes in supermarkets rarely work, but this one is an exception to that rule. Only product from the bakery is on sale [eat in or take away], the seating is small and very basic, yet the place is always busy, and usually full. With almost everything for sale under Rp.20,000 it is perfect for that quick 5 minute lunch or any time snack. They feature Japanese breads and combinations that are most unusual. Perhaps the strangest is the Japanese Hamburger, a ham salad in a hamburger bun, a ham-burger! Another is their Sausage Croissant; a long sausage is split at each end and inserted in a croissant before baking, the result is squid-like tentacles protruding from both ends of the croissant, but very tasty, and often sold out! Flat and folded breads can contain many mixes; Bacon & Cheese, Bacon Corn & Mayonnaise, Sausage and Bacon. A slice of toast is topped with either Beef or Bacon and an egg. Japanese Obha topped with tuna or Takesumi, a Black bun stuffed with pork, onion and nori seaweed. There are even ‘dessert’ options; Choco Turtles, Durian Pan, Banana & Cream Cheese and a Croissant stuffed in a plastic cup with chocolate sauce. Whilst there often a few Japanese amongst the customers most are locals, including many expats, who have discovered the cheapest eat in town! I just bought a small [big enough for one] Jalapeno Pizza to take home and heat up…@ $1.50 it must be the cheapest pizza in the world!

IN A TIME OF CRISIS, LIFE GOES ON…. Welcome to the latest news from Rotary Club Bali Seminyak (RCBS). There have been dramatic changes here in Bali since our last published message. Our calm environment has been rattled by Mt. Agung’s apparent interest in erupting…we just don’t when or even if! In the meantime, RCBS has responded by delivering dozens of water filters to evacuation camps, collecting monetary donations and coordinating with other Rotary clubs in Bali through a District Rotary Committee led by Rotary Club Bali Kuta.
The Puhu Global Grant, focused on water, sanitation and hygiene, is moving right along and over 500 children have been examined by the local Government Clinic (Puskesmas). Doctors, dentists, nurses and technicians check children from head to toe…including vision screening! Where a health problem was identified, the clinic will follow-up with parents.
Over a hundred thousand villagers have been evacuated from their homes and are now living in tents, or with family or friends. Throughout Bali, the land of a thousand temples, every village is holding special temple ceremonies dedicated to calming the mountain and keeping all of us safe.
Another batch of 600 reading books was delivered to an elementary school in Tabanan. There simply are not enough government supplied books that entice children to read. In this oral culture, it is so important to get our young peoples’ cute little noses into books!

The project work of RCBS continues with some amazing results, especially influenced by the sex life of pigs and goats. Female piglets given to 10 poverty level fam ilies hav e matured and YES!!! Lots of baby piglets! The new piglet arrivals will be distributed among many more poverty level families and soon will vastly improve their economies. Children will better fed and clothed and parents will be able to keep children in school. A big OINK OINK to our prolific pigs. On Nusa Penida, our project goats are just figuring out how to make baby goats. Sex was clearly not these goats’ highest priority… but at long last there are four little goats. Alas, three of the four babies are males. Perhaps there’s an extra supply of goat testosterone in the goat herd? At least we now have evidence that the goats know how to ‘do it.’
Thanks to the generosity of the Australian Consulates’ Direct Aid Program (DAP), RCBS is competing with many other clubs and organization for project funding. RCBS submitted two project applications. Now we’re waiting to learn if one (or maybe both?) of our projects will be selected for funding. Fingers crossed! Working at a great distance, a Global Grant on the island of Flores is moving towards completion. It will bring water to over 5,000 people. And another possible Global Grant, also on Flores, is meant to create hundreds of new jobs through increased tourism. We’re still polishing the application…to be continued. Have a bit of open time? Join us at a meeting. We meet every Wednesday at noon at the gorgeous The Trans Resort and Hotel on Sunset Road, Kerobokan. Click on: http://rotaryseminyak.org/events/calendar to see our calendar.

By Renee Thorpe Drawn from the Hindu Sanskrit philosophy ‘Sangkan Paraning Dumadi’, ‘Origins’ is the theme of the 14th annual Ubud Writers & Readers Festival (UWRF). It speaks of the cyclical nature of things, particularly birth, life and the afterlife. In the words of UWRF Founder & Director Janet DeNeefe, “This year’s theme invites us to consider the biggest picture – to contemplate not just our connections from person to person, but as a collective humanity extending across people, the planet and periods of time.” Read on for my top picks of this year’s program. It’s A Family Affair! Minions by Moonlight is a free event set to enchant fans of the Despicable Me/ Minions film franchise and pop culture phenomenon. On October 27 at 7pm, the Blanco Museum plays host to a screening of Despicable Me 3 (the latest in the series). Its co-director and the voice of the adorable yellow Minions, French-Indonesian Pierre Coffin will be there to answer questions and share the fun.And who can we thank for bringing Coffin into the world? His mother, one of Indonesia’s first feminist writers, Nh. Dini. For her extraordinary canon and contribution to Indonesian literature, she will receive the Festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the Gala Opening. She’ll also reveal the flame that sustained her prolific 50+ year writing career in an inconversation with of Indonesia’s most respected authors and journalists, Leila S. Chudori, on Day 1 of the Main Program.

Do not miss Rocking Against Prejudice on 28 October, headlined by the all-girl Muslim metal band from West Java, Voice of Baceprot, who with their headscarves and bass guitars have received international media attention for challenging stereotypes of young Muslim women. Before We All Go Home
Coffee Roasting at Home is a brand new addition to the Kitchen Program, which features the Festival’s more culinarily-inclined speakers – or indeed, caffeine-inclined. Kadek Edi, one of the first Balinese to earn the title of Q Grader (which means he can rate cups of coffee on a wide range of factors such as sweetness, uniformity, acidity, and so on) will teach all attendees how to go from freshly harvested green coffee beans to a fine cup of brewed coffee. That’s happening on 29 October at 9:30am, at Seniman Coffee Studio, Jalan Sri Wedari, Ubud.
UWRF’s Closing Night Party is a Festival tradition full of fun and surprises, and is the Festival team’s thank you to the 180+ volunteers who put in the time and energy to make the wheels keep turning. Dance the night away, hug your new Festival friends, and toast the talents of Indonesia and beyond.
Want to support communities affected by Mount Agung? All proceeds from the Origins Fundraiser Night on 26 October will go directly to evacuation shelters. Book Launch (27 October) This is part of the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival and the book is all about the early days of Bali. The book features Walter Henry Medhurst, a Jakarta-based missionary who arrived in Bali to spread the word of Christianity on 10 December, 1829. The book is called ‘Mission to China: How an Englishman brought the West to the Orient’ by John Holliday who is the great great grandson of Walter Medhurst. John Holliday, originally from the UK, now lives in Australia and has spent five years researching the life of his ancestor through England, India, Malaysia, Indonesia and China. By attending this launch you will get to meet John Holliday and learn more about his fascinating experiences researching this biography. The journal of Walter Medhurst is one of the earliest published accounts of the history and culture of Bali. This is one book launch not to be missed and will add to the history books about Bali in a bygone era. When Cost Where Contact

This image of a young girl in dance costume sitting in the driver’s seat of a truck is so quintessential Balinese in so many ways. The picture speaks volumes about contemporary Bali, how the spiritual and the mundane mix so seamlessly and also exemplifies Morgan’s approach to the project. In his search for the “real” Bali, the photographer by chance came across a young girl, a new generation of Balinese, dressed in traditional attire and

Gender Wayang – Bali’s Most Intimate Gamelan Ensemble If you’ve ever been to a tooth filing ceremony in Bali, you would have heard the music of gamelan gender wayang. Instruments played by either by two or four musicians in pairs, a gender wayang ensemble is Bali’s most intimate gamelan ensemble. This is not just because the group is relatively small compared to the commonly seen large orchestras used at temple ceremonies like gong kebyar, but because they are normally played facing each other. Being a gamelan musician of 21 years myself, I’ve thought a lot about why certain gamelan ensembles are laid out facing each other. Other examples are selonding and gambang, two of Bali’s archaic-type ensembles. A commonality of these ensembles is the lack of a rhythmic leader, time-keeper or cymbals that serve a sort of “conducting” function in the larger ensembles. These ensembles are all played with a mallet in each hand, in contrast to instruments in other ensembles played with single mallets. Gender wayang, in particular has complex rhythms which demand a high level of concentration and coordination, as well as a rhythmic empathy with the other player or players (if it’s a quartet) so that everything interlocks perfectly. Due to the complex nature of gender wayang music, facing each other is definitely advantageous. A simply raise of the hand of the dominant player can signal a dynamic change; a lowering of the head suggests a soft passage; and raised eyebrows that the piece is about to come to and end. Once gender wayang musicians have played together for many years, they sort of watch each other out of the corners of the eyes rather than directly, and, from personal experience, it can be uncanny to find that both of you may add particular variations (sort of like basic improvisation) in exactly the same part of a piece. Since gender wayang are essential to so many ceremonies in Bali, it is also paramount that both musicians know when to start and stop based on what, for example, the priest is doing or about to do. This goes double for accompaniment of a puppeteer where cues are lightning quick, and a new character or scene requires a different piece of music often with contrasting dynamics from the previous one. Next time you see some gender wayang musicians at a ceremony, keep an eye out for the slick body language. THE LIGHTER SIDE OF VOLCANIC ASH I was in Canada when the rumblings began. Like so many other Bali residents I became an amateur vulcanologist, obsessively checking daily seismic activity and monitoring the Facebook earth tremor updates. I filled my suitcase with N95 masks and goggles to bring back instead of the usual interesting groceries.
“The breakdown of volcanic ash will differ from place to place. If it rains right after the eruption, it can be quite rapid. It could take months or years depending on the weather conditions and the make-up of ash. I think in the case of the Galunggung (Java) eruption, after nine months of eruptions it was another six months before the farmers could start to plant.”
At time of writing we still don’t know when/whether Gunung Agung will erupt. According to the Oxford University Earth Sciences together with the Indonesian Volcanological Survey and the Earth Observatory of Singapore, it has been blowing its top for about 5,000 years at approximately 100 year intervals. If it follows its pattern from 1963 there could be a slow lead-up to a small eruption, followed a few months later by a major bang, followed in another few months by another bang, then several months of grumbling and belching and lots of volcanic ash. Or not. No one really knows.
But even a few centimetres of tephra can be an agricultural disaster. The ash inhibits transpiration and photosynthesis in plants. Plant survival depends on ash thickness, ash chemistry, compaction of ash, amount of rainfall, duration of burial and the length of plant stalks at the time of ash fall. The acidic nature of ash will lead to elevated soil sulfur levels and lowered soil pH, which can reduce the availability of essential minerals and alter the soil’s characteristics so that crops and plants will not survive. No plants, no livestock.
I’m back on the ground now and puzzling about how to ash-proof a house specifically designed for good ventilation. There’s no glass in my windows and much of the space is outdoors. My small bedroom the only place of sanctuary if there’s an ash dump. I try to imagine the large windows and vents all covered in plastic and unbleached cotton as I shelter there with three dogs, three hens, a parrot, two lovebirds, five pigeons and the turtles if I can catch them. I’ve spent many hours researching volcanic ash and trying to find its positive aspects, which are very few. Pray hard that the winds will remain favourable for a very long time and blow most of it away over the sea. Because aside from a few minor commercial uses it’s just a bloody nuisance when it’s not downright dangerous and destructive. First the good news. Volcanic ash (tephra) can be added to soap as an exfoliant. It can be used as an abrasive in mechanics. Very fine ash is used in some toothpaste and minus-200-mesh ash can be used for polishing plate glass. You could buy it on Alibaba for $1/kg but don’t rush; soon you can have all you want for free. If you’re willing to wait a few hundreds of thousands of years, the ash may become bentonite clay. Apparently, adding water to the clay gives it a negative electric charge, which in turn removes toxins from the body. So it makes a great face and body mask for your (by then) rather desiccated epidermis.
post-eruption reconstruction. There will be lots of it. Volcanic ash can have an impact on electricity, causing disruption to electric power supply systems at all levels of power generation, transformation, transmission and distribution. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volcanic_ash for the technical details. So be prepared in case the power goes out. The same source explains how telecommunication and broadcast networks can be affected by volcanic ash, so we may be looking at a period of withdrawal from our devices. You don’t want to get it in your computer, air conditioner, car engine, water pumps or lungs either. Ash particles of less than 10mm diameter suspended in the air are inhalable, and people exposed to ash falls have experienced respiratory discomfort, breathing difficulty, eye and skin irritation, and nose and throat symptoms. Most of these effects are short-term and are not considered a significant health risk to those without pre-existing respiratory conditions. There have been no documented cases of silicosis developed from exposure to volcanic ash, but make sure you and your staff have N95 masks and goggles in case of an ash fall. After reviewing countless papers by engineers, medics, historians and agronomists, I can confidently report that there is no lighter side to volcanic ash. Heaven knows I’ve looked for it.
Land rehabilitation after ash fall depends on the ash deposit thickness and may require mixing the deposit with the buried soil or removing the ash and applying topsoil. Or the land might eventually recover on its own. After the 2014 eruption of Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra, some of the ashes were being colonised by lichens and grasses after three years.
For most people reading this, the eruption will be inconvenient. For the tens of thousands of families whose only home and assets are on that mountain, it will be devastating. If Gunung Agung does blow, and it seems likely, the government and NGOs will be finding ways to help them survive and move forward over the next year or so. We can all be part of this process. Stay tuned, and pray for a fair wind.
“This natural phenomenon renews the soil, but it takes time for the ashes to weather,” says Dian Fiantis from the University of Andalas in Padang. “We need to work on solutions that will hasten the rate of soil formation.”
There can be agricultural benefits but I’ve had difficulty finding hard data. Volcanic ash is rich in minerals but these can take months or years to leach out and nourish the soil. According to Ratih Nurruhliati, a Sundanese geologist who specialises in volcanoes, there are many variables.
But if you happen to be a builder, volcanic ash is your friend. The ancient Romans used it to make concrete walls and buildings that are still standing today. They found that mixing finely ground volcanic pumice or ash with quicklime combined with sand and aggregate made a concrete that will even set underwater. The raw material probably came from the nearby volcano of Vesuvius.
“Tephra contains primary minerals which have an abundance of nutrients,” she told me. “Over time, chemical and biological weathering, the ashes will release the nutrients and the ash will increase its surface area, enabling it to hold more nutrients and water. In addition, volcanic ash has the capacity to sequester a high amount of carbon (taking carbon out of the atmosphere and fixing it in the soil).
The Greeks also used cement made with volcanic ash and some examples dating from the 6th or 7th century BC still exist on Rhodes. A similar concrete was used by the ancient Egyptians when building the pyramids and the sphinx at Giza, and the Minoans also made cement using the ample supplies of volcanic ash and limestone found on Crete. So hopefully someone out there is figuring how to use tephra during the

30 Can you print real cheese with a 3D printer? by Ines Wynn Since 2009 3D printing has been in a steady upmarch. What was once considered whimsical thinking or geek brain sparks has now made its way from industrial manufacturing into mainstream use and the consumer 3D printing market has taken off like wildfire. What once was an expensive process suddenly became onc available at a cost within the average consumer’s av reach. re 3D printing has actually been around for about 30 years. In 1983 an enterprising engineer named ye Chuck Hull invented the first 3D printing process and Ch ca called it ‘stereo lithography’ which he defined as ‘a me method and apparatus for making solid objects by successively “printing” thin layers of a liquid ultraviolet suc curable material one on top of tthe other’. He went on to found the company 3D Systems, expanded his technique and built the foundation of what we now know today as additive manufacturing (AM) or 3D printing. From then on 3D printing began the road trip to ever-expanding possibilities and the technique is now applied in the wildest ways imaginable. Simply put, 3D printing is an additive manufacturing process that creates a physical object from a blueprint in the form of a digital design file. This design file is sliced into thin layers which are then sent to the 3D printer. There are different 3D printing technologies and materials you can print with, but all are based on the same principle: a digital model is turned into a solid three-dimensional physical object by adding material layer by layer. It all starts with the creation of a 3D model in your computer. This could be done with a CAD (Computer Aided Design) program, 3D modelling software or based on data generated with a 3D scanner. 3D modelling software is often custom made to suit the functions of the user’s industry or cater to specific interests. There are software applications on the market for industrial manufacturing, aerospace or transportation, furniture design, bio or medical labs, fabrics and fashion and many others.

For the amateur or hobbyist there are even free apps available like Tinkercad which is great for beginners and comes with tutorials. Tinkercad works in browsers that support WebGL, for instance Google Chrome. Once you have created a 3D model, the next step is to prepare it for printing. You can buy a pre-assembled 3D printer or a cheap DYI 3D printer kit on Amazon or send your file to a 3D printing service to get your object printed. 3D printers come in a dizzying array from large industrial machines that use a laser to selectively melt metal powder at high temperatures to desktop printers that melt a plastic material and lay it down onto a print platform.

3D printing materials vary by printer type, ranging from plastics and polymers to metals and alloys, concrete, ceramics, paper and some foodstuffs like vegetables and chocolate. What can you print with it? Just about anything you can think of. 3D printing is being used in many industries. For instance, the automotive, aviation and aerospace sectors use 3D to produce parts, tools and interior elements. Amateurs and vintage car enthusiasts print parts to restore old cars, even parts that have been out of production for decades.

School and educational institutions were early adopters of the 3D technology. Architects and manufacturers have long used 3D printers in their design process to create scale models and prototypes because they can be made cheaper and much faster and corrections or improvements can be made instantly. Construction companies can even print houses by printing all the parts are separately and assemble them onsite. A project by Chinese company WinSun uses recyclable materials to print houses for $4,800 dollars per unit.

Medical and dental labs are producing all sorts of M designs for prosthetics and implants, even 3D printing de pens for orthopaedic surgery. Other examples of pe 3D printing would include reconstructing fossils in palaeontology, replicating ancient artefacts in archaeology, reconstructing bones and body parts in arc forensic pathology and reconstructing heavily damaged fore evidence acquired from crime scene investigations. You evid can print stage props, furniture, lighting fixtures, toys, trinkets, home hom decorations and jewellery. And fill your wardrobe with fashions of your own design. There are several fashion websites where users can design their own garment and have it printed, fitted and delivered in just a few clicks. How about printing a spare house key? You can easily do this from a JPEG file. What about that cheese? 3D printing invaded the food industry a long time ago. Commercial kitchens, bakeries, and confectionaries are using 3D food printers to save time and effort. Nursery homes and hospitals can print purees and mush-like foods for their patients. Just think what NASA can do with space-printed food stuffs. 3D food printers have special pressurised tanks to extrude the food material which is in the form of liquid, paste or powdered food as a printing medium. They can print noodles, pizza, stuffed pasta, quiche, cake, chocolate, cake, cake and simple pastries. pastries Earlier this year a team of scientist in an Irish university have actually printed cheese. The downer is that they started with a commercially available processed cheese. While the experiment proved their point, it looks less than impressive. So for the moment, you may want to stick with the imported camembert. Are you ready to print, cook and serve your food? Maybe like the microwave in its early days, the 3D kitchen robot will march into your life and take your kitchen by storm. If you want to try your hand at 3D printing but are stymied or flummoxed by the learning process, you can –as always- get plenty help from online classes, YouTube tutorials and the ever-present 3D Printing for Dummies. To help print your creations, you can take them to one of several Bali based 3D printing shops. Yes, 3D printing has come to Bali!

Networks for Digital Nomads These days, more and more people are working remotely and heading overseas to live and work from laptops. Humans being social creatures, and needing others of our kind to interact with, it comes as no surprise that online social networks are forming to offer support, advice and comfort to these remote wanderers and long-stay travellers. If you need advice about a country or city that might suit you to live in, or help with finding accommodation and workspace, or just where to buy good coffee or find a doctor, consider plugging into one of these networks. They are also a great way to meet and socialise with other nomads and make new friends. There are broad, global networks, such as Digital Nomads around the World (53,551 members) or Digital Nomads Hub (14,016 members), as well as smaller, regional ones, specific to a certain country or even just one city, such as Digital Nomads Portugal or Lisbon Digital Nomads. There are networks that limit membership to women and others for women of colour or LGBT people. Generally, I find the global networks are good for answering general lifestyle questions, such as, how do I get started, where do I look for remote jobs, which countries offer freelancer visas, etc. The smaller, regional networks are better for answering questions about how much to budget for a certain country or city, about local customs and rules, the best areas or neighbourhoods to live in a city, how to find accomodation and co working spaces and even how to access local services that can arrange complete nomad packages, like a co working space that offers one set fee for hotel, meal and monthly co-working fees. For example, in addition to joining several larger global groups, I’ve joined a Nomad Women 40s and Up Facebook group. As a digital nomad over 40, I appreciate being able to meet virtually with older female travellers immediately, rather than sift through huge numbers of people on one of the global nomadic sites. I can also post questions, observation or experience that might be only relevant to my age and gender.
The best way to find these networks is just do a Google search on line, using relevant keywords. There is a large Facebook group called Digital Nomads in Asia (5,000 members) which you should consider joining if you are thinking of traveling and working around Asia. However, once you have information about working in Asia and have

A word here about remote jobs: obviously, if you are going to work remotely, you would ideally like to work for a company or boss who supports remote workers. I previously wrote about remote job boards (see Finding Remote Work). There are also Facebook groups and pages that offer listing of jobs for nomads. As you would expect, many of these jobs involve IT or Tech work, but a steadily increasing number are in areas like Customer Service, Marketing, Social Media Management, Consulting, Writing, etc. You can find jobs on sites such as Remote Work and Jobs for Digital Nomads or The Remote Work Group for Digital Nomads. As well as posting jobs, often from other nomads with online businesses, the people in this group offer numerous links to and information about jobs, networking sessions, meet-ups, coaching and training services and good advice. There are also groups for nomads who are also running or starting a business; Digital Nomad Entrepreneurs (22,443 members) is an active Facebook group. There are two separate Facebook groups that deal just with Bali: Bali Digital Nomads (6,040 members) and Digital Nomads Bali (1,930 members). For travellers wanting to focus more narrowly, there are groups like Ubud Digital Nomads (whose get-togethers often feature yoga and full moon ceremonies; this is Ubud, after all) or Canggu Digital Nomads. These groups are great for people already living in the area, who want to meet up with other nomads, join forces to work on a start-up or are seeking roommates. They are also good for people who have decided they want to live in those areas and are seeking some solid advice from nomads who know these places well.

I have found the groups I belong to overall well administered and run. Either there is low tolerance for trolls, or administrators delete trollish comments and block their writers, as my experience of the groups have been of digital nomads sincerely wanting to help and advise, and giving great information to newbies about what life on the road is actually like.
decided where you will be going, it’s a good idea to focus in on the specific region you want to go to. Are you headed for Thailand? A search will yield Thailand Digital Nomads. Groups are generally based on Facebook, but occasionally are built around a website. Getting even more specific, there is a Bangkok Digital Nomads group, as well as a Bangkok Digital Jobs group, and a Chiang Mai Digital Nomads group.

Say What?
By Pass Ngurah Rai No. 542 Sanur, Denpasar, BALI, Indonesia C/CE/G-18 Jan. 17
Question: My boyfriend is a masochist though I’m not a sadist. I very much enjoy pleasuring him, but I don’t actively get joy from causing pain. The only thing that bothers me about the whole situation is his use of the word “abuse” in reference to the consensual things that we do. I grew up in an extremely abusive household, and that word rightfully holds a lot of negative charge for me. We’ve talked about this, and he’s fine with changing if there is a better word for it.
Question: I am female in my twenties, living in Bali in a small two-story building with my mom and stepdad. A few weeks ago, I was outside on the steps when an older Indonesian man came out of his upstairs room and talked to me. The entirety of what I understood him to say was that he is from Java, he lives upstairs (apparently alone), and that his wife is in Jakarta. He also kept asking me if I wanted to be his friend.
Unfortunately, I cannot think of one, and this has led to me being unhappy about inflicting on him whatever it is that we do together. I don’t want to keep this as a situation in which I feel bad about doing things that are pleasurable to him, but I also don’t want to be abusive and that is the connotation that we currently use for what is going on. Is there a better word that we can use? Or am I just going to have to suck it up and deal with this?
Confused at first, it finally dawned on me that he probably meant for me to be a fling or his mistress while his wife is back at home. He left before I could express my horror and, even though I have not spoken to him since, I have noticed that he follows me. The other day, for example, he apparently waited in the shadows of a tree until I walked up across the street to where he was. Then, he started walking, keeping pace with me until he reached the building that we regrettably both occupy. When I crossed the street, he stayed standing at the downstairs steps until I went up into my apartment. I’ve also seen him watch me from his balcony.
Dr. ZZ: If you are an abuse survivor, it is understandable that the word “abuse” has negative connotations for you. Especially if you are playing in the arena of BDSM, you owe it to yourself - and your partner - to make sure you are 100% safe and 100% comfortable (or willing to be interestingly uncomfortable) with exploring this arena of sex play. Given the kinds of games you are playing, saying and doing only those things you are comfortable with come with the territory. Checking an online thesaurus, you may want to use any of the listed synonyms: Hurt, harm, defile, debase, exploit, damage, mistreat, violate, manhandle. You could also go with any of the verbs that describe specific actions: Hit, bind, grab, slap, spank, grasp, strike, shove, punch, twist, restrain. Since you’ve asked your boyfriend not to use the word “abuse,” he has an obligation to comply with you in using any alternate if he wants to remain as awesomely good, giving and game (GGG) as you have been with him. You have an absolute right to set boundaries for whatever reason you wish.

This completely disgusts me, and I want to punch him somehow without touching him. I know that Western women are often viewed as “loose” by men from more “traditional” cultures, and this makes me angry. What’s the best approach in a situation like this? Ignore him, which I’ve been doing? Try to express in plain English that I will never want him? Or some other creative solution? Thanks for assisting!
NC/CE/G-25 Oct. 17
Dr. ZZ: The next time this guy makes any kind of unwanted contact with you, say something direct and explicit to him to let him know that it is unwelcome. (Example, “Please don’t follow me,” “I want to be alone,” “I don’t want to walk with you, please go,” “I don’t want to talk to you, please go,” “You are making me uncomfortable, please go,” “You got the wrong idea from our conversation the other day; I’m not interested.”) Say whatever you say as concisely and directly as possible without apologizing or backtracking. Treat him as if you expect him to do the right thing, and he probably will. A normal person who is told to back off will apologize and back off. A creepy person will get angry with you, will willfully misunderstand, or will do whatever he can to continue the interaction. “No,” “Please go,” and “I am not interested” are complete sentences. If you say this, and the man keeps talking, that is a warning bell. Get away, and do whatever it takes to physically remove yourself without worrying if it’s weird or offensive. If you ask him to leave you alone, and he clearly does not, you may want to enlist your stepdad to have a word with him. Your job is not to teach the guy how to behave around every woman in the world, or to set an example for all time; it is to teach him how to behave around you, so that you feel safe where you live. You don’t need to punish him, humiliate him, or get more angry or engaged. Keep a calm, neutral, civil tone, and let him save face. The optimal outcome is that you feel safe, and that everyone retreats to a curt and polite “friendly nod” when encountered.

Local News Passengers criticize AirAsia crew reaction during rapid descent Passengers aboard an AirAsia flight from Perth, Australia, to Bali, Indonesia, were angry at the flight crew for showing fear when the plane rapidly descended nearly 24,000 feet Monday. About an hour after the plane left Perth, the Australian Transit Safety Bureau said the plane depressurized at about 34,000 feet and the “crew conducted an emergency descent to 10,000 feet,” which is a standard practice, CNN reported. But passengers said they were more startled by the reaction of the flight crew than the sudden plunge. “The panic was escalated, because of the behavior of staff, who were screaming and looked tearful,” passenger Clare Askew told reporters, according to USA Today. “We look to them for reassurance and we didn’t get any.” Video of the incident shows oxygen masks being deployed and a member of the flight crew telling passengers to “buckle your seatbelts” in English and other commands in another language. But passengers said the English commands weren’t clear and they didn’t understand the non-English orders, adding to the confusion. Passenger Mark Bailey said the only English instruction he heard was to “brace” for impact. “They started screaming ‘Emergency, emergency!’” Bailey said. “They just went hysterical, there was no real panic before that, but everyone panicked after that.” After the rapid descent, the plane returned to Perth and passengers were given new flights. Malaysia-based AirAsia Group blamed the incident on a technical failure and apologized for the inconvenience. “We commend our pilots for landing the aircraft safely and complying with standard operating procedure,” said Ling Liong Tien, the head of safety for AirAsia. “We are fully committed to the safety of our guests and crew and we will continue to ensure that we adhere to the highest safety standards.” [UPI October 16, 2017] Middle school boy poses disrespectfully on top of Hindu shrine There’s nothing like an angry storm of comments from thousands of netizens to get someone to remove offensive content. A middle-school-aged boy in Indonesia has apologized over some photos of himself that went viral on Sunday, in which he disrespectfully posed with his feet up on a Hindu temple. “To those of the Hindu faith… I am deeply sorry… I did not mean to offend you guys… please forgive me,” the boy wrote on his Facebook page, after removing the offensive photos. The post had been captioned “OTW Pura Bali” (on the way to a Balinese temple), but it’s believed that the pictures were actually taken at a Hindu shrine on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, reports Tribun Bali. Before the post was removed from the boy’s account, it had been shared as many as 5,989 times and had over 4,000 comments, many of them from Balinese Facebook users cursing the boy out for “blasphemy.” While blasphemy is an offense punishable by time behind bars in Indonesia, it does not appear any charges will be pressed over the photos because of the boy’s age. The Chairman of the Indonesian Hindu Youth Association, Sures Kumar, condemned the photos but said that because of the boy’s “young age”, it could be that he did not understand what he was doing. So, a “forgive him, for he know not what he do” sort of situation. “It’s certain that the young kid did not understand,” Kumar said on Monday, as quoted by Detik. “It must have been ignorance for the kid to have behaved that way. If he knew what he was doing, I’m sure he would not be able to do that.” Only Balinese priests are able to go up to plinggih padmasana, the type of Hindu shrine pictured in the boy’s photos, says Kumar. The shrines are shaped as thrones, left empty for Balinese Hindu deities. [Coconuts Bali October 16, 2017] Australian arrested in Bali faces years in prison for drug offences
Operator blames ‘unwarranted’ volcano fears for Bali booking slump An “unwarranted fear factor” over travel to Bali has been sparked by irresponsible reporting and comments on social media concerning an active volcano on the Indonesian holiday island. Khiri Travel Indonesia reported an overall 20% slump bookings since Mount Agung started to show increased signs of activity in the third week of September. The company’s general manager Herman Hoven said: “There has been no explosion. There may never be. And the vast majority of Bali’s tourism activities take place between 30 and 60 kms [18 and 37 miles] from Mt Agung, at a safe distance. “Irresponsible reporting and comments on social media have created an unwarranted fear factor while the situation on the ground in Bali remains calm and tourism operators remain fully open for business.” No major travel advisories have been issued recommending tourists to cancel. Instead, overseas governments advise tourists to monitor reliable media reports and follow advice from Balinese provincial authorities. However, travel advisories admit that volcanic ash clouds may cause aviation disruption if Mount Agung erupts. “That remains a distant and hypothetical scenario,” said Hoven. “At the moment it is safe here, so tourists should contact their tour operator to confirm travel plans – and stick to their intention to visit Bali.” He added: “We would not tell our clients to visit if we thought it was not safe.” Tourism accounts for around 40% of the local economy on Bali, although reliable statistics are hard to find. A social media campaign has been started to support Balinese tourism and show tourists in Bali having a great time, despite speculation about Mount Agung. The #iaminBaliNOW campaign, launched by Bali-based Alex Tusk, the founder of bookgreener.com and RefillMyBottle.com, is modelled on the crowd-sourced social media campaign that Nepal used in 2015 following the major earthquake there. Tusk said: “Persistent misinformation is threatening the livelihood of many entrepreneurs, their staff and families who rely on tourism income in Bali – not only those directly in the tourism sector but also, for example, farmers, who supply restaurants and hotels.”
An Australian who was nabbed with drugs in his luggage in Bali and briefly escaped custody by climbing through a toilet air vent has been charged with narcotics possession, a police spokesman said Saturday. That charge carries a maximum sentence of 12 years in prison, meaning the Aussie faces more than a decade behind bars overseas. The minimum sentence would be five years. Thirty-two-year-old Joshua James Baker, from Mount Isa in Queensland, was detained after arriving at Bali’s Ngurah Rai airport from Bangkok on October 8 when Indonesian police found drugs in his luggage. “He had 28 grammes of marijuana and 37 diazepam pills,” Bali police spokesman Hengky Widjaja said.
#IaminBaliNOW aims to address the issue head on with the facts. “#IaminBaliNow is a crowd-sourced, social media campaign to showcase Bali as it is now, with reliable, up-to-the date information, facts, photos and stories,” said Tusk. [Travel Weekly October 16, 2017]
But Baker slipped away when he was led to a toilet for a urine test on Monday, climbing through a ventilation shaft to make his getaway. Police soon became suspicious of his long bathroom break and launched a manhunt when they realised he had escaped. They found him around 10 hours later in the beach village of Canggu. Baker’s lawyer, Pande Putu Maya Arsanti, has told Fairfax Media her client is mentally ill and therefore not accountable for his actions. Baker has told police he brought the drugs from Australia to Bali with him and that he did not believe he was guilty because it is legal to use marijuana in Australia. And police allege he has told them he often consumed marijuana in Bali during previous trips, generally buying it on the holiday island. This was the first time he had bought his own supply. Police have said they will include details of his great escape in the dossier of evidence against him so it could be used by judges.
The construction of the new underpass at the entrance to Bali’s Airport is scheduled to commence on October 17, 2017, with completion targeted for August 2018. Beritabali.com warns that the accelerated construction project is expected to become a major source of traffic congestion across a wide area of Kuta. The underpass project sits at the crossroads on the way to Bali’s airport, Nusa Dua, Uluwatu and the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Monument.
Baker was taken into custody on Monday morning. After he was interrogated, he was taken to the police hospital for a routine medical examination and doctors suggested he be kept there overnight. The deputy director of the narcotics directorate at Bali police, Sudjarwoko, said that about 2.40am he asked the two police officers guarding him for permission to use the toilet. “Our police personnel were too excited watching television while waiting,” Sudjarwoko said. After 15 minutes they knocked on the door and when there was no answer, broke the door down to find that Baker had escaped through a ventilation window. Baker ran to a nearby minimarket and borrowed a staff member’s mobile phone to get a motorbike taxi to take him to a British friend’s home in Canggu. Baker asked his friend for money but made no mention of his earlier arrest and escape. From Canggu he took a taxi to Nusa Dua, telling the driver to stop in front of a house where he pretended to be opening the gate. But when the taxi left he doubled back to Canggu, a distance of 28km. When he arrived in Nusa Dua, apparently Baker is smart. He told the taxi to stop in front of a house, which he said was his house. He pretended it was his house, like trying to open the gate, but apparently he went away once the taxi was gone,” Sudjarwoko said. “I spread his picture to cafes, hotels, restaurants and other public areas to find him. At around 2.20pm we got a phone call from a hotel who said there was someone there like the photo of the man searched by police. “I told the hotel staff to have chit chat with him, to make him stay there longer, as we needed time to go from Nusa Dua to Canggu. We arrested him at the hotel. “Maybe he was hungry, that’s why he came out to get lunch.” [NewsCom.Au October 15, 2017] The show goes on: Ubud writers’ festival to bring big names to Bali as Mount Agung rumbles As Mount Agung started rumbling in Bali last month, Janet DeNeefe, the director of Ubud writers festival, convened a series of crisis meetings. About 160 writers from Indonesia and around the world, including Ian Rankin, Tim Flannery, Jane Harper and Jung Chang, had been booked to gather in Ubud from 25 October for the 14th iteration of the festival – and a decision had to be made about whether to postpone it. “When the volcano became active, we went into red alert,” DeNeefe told Guardian Australia. “We had meeting upon meeting to work out what to do. We had a three-structure plan from cutting back on the festival to postponing ... so examining every option. It was very stressful. “This is the guy that runs the show,” DeNeefe said of the volcano. “It’s not just any old volcano. Bali just can’t help but feel cosmic.” The eruption is feared to be the worst in Bali in decades and it’s fair to say a destabilised writers festival is among the least of the locals’ concerns: an estimated 140,000 people in surrounding areas have been evacuated and moved into makeshift shelters and formerly bustling travel hotspots have been left virtually empty. In Australia, holiday makers put plans on hold or cancelled their trips, fearing not so much the eruption but transport chaos; airlines would be unable to fly should there be ash clouds in the air and huge consequences loomed over the island’s tourism-centric economy. But now, weeks after the original rumblings, things are relatively less volatile at Mount Agung and the team at the writers festival has decided to carry on. The Ubud writers festival was born from tragedy. In 2002, after the Bali bombings, DeNeefe started the festival to encourage visitors back to the region. It is now regarded as one of the best writers’ festivals in the world, highlighting and promoting Indonesian authors and attracting some of the biggest names in the international literary scene. Writers speaking this year also include Simon Armitage, Simon Winchester, this year’s Miles Franklin winner, Josephine Wilson, the French-Indonesian animator Pierre Coffin and the Man Booker Prize finalist Madeleine Thien. The keynote will be delivered by Malaysian activist Marina Mahathir: a former UN person of the year, a leader at the Malaysian Aids Foundation and an expert on minority rights in Malaysia. Ubud won’t be directly affected by the volcano and none of the writers has panicked or threatened to pull out, DeNeefe says. “The Balinese are kind of chilled, like, ‘Ehh – this could take months’,” she says. “But there’s lots of frantic expats out there.” [The Guardian October 6, 2017]
Major traffic detours during construction of underpass at entrance to Bali’s airport
A survey conducted by Bali’s traffic and police authorities has resulted in a plan to close the airport access road and divert traffic using the Jalan Sunset Road, Jalan Dewi Sri, Jalan Raya Kuta and Jalan Raya Tuban. Police have been preparing the alternative routes in the lead up to the commencement of construction by discouraging on street parking on the affected roadways. Parking will also be controlled in front of the traditional Desa Adat Kuta public market, the Agung Asasutagwa Mosque, and Al-Azhar Mosque. [ October 15, 2017] Aussies to mark Bali bombings 15 years on It turned paradise into a scene of devastation, focused the world’s attention on Indonesia’s terrorist cells and left many Australians with scars - both physical and psychological - that will never heal. This week, Australians are expected to join other survivors and families of victims of the 2002 Bali bombings at the site of the blasts in a bond that remains strong despite the passing of the years. Around 200 family, friends, religious leaders and government officials are expected to gather at the site in Kuta from 4pm local time on Thursday. It will be fifteen years since the night of October 12, 2002, when bombs ripped through the Sari Club in Kuta and nearby Paddy’s Bar, killing 202 people including 88 Australians. The attacks, carried out by terrorist organisation Jemaah Islamiyah, represent the single largest loss of Australian life in an act of terror. “Bali was seen as our little paradise ... As the raw emotion came up, people were obviously very angry, a lot of that was directed towards Indonesia,” President of the Indonesia Institute, Ross Taylor recalls. It defined the bilateral relationship “for years”, as Indonesia faced intense pressure to crack down on militant groups. One good thing to emerge was the increasing relationship between the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and its Indonesian counterpart, which created the highly successful anti-terrorism unit called Detachment 88 or Densus 88, Mr Taylor said. Nick Way, a former Channel 10 journalist who covered the bombings, says the attack was Australia’s September 11. Now chairman of the Australian-run Bali Peace Park Association, Mr Way hopes a new proposal to turn the space into a tourism centre, with a museum and employment opportunities - rather than just a memorial site - will provide a way forward. “It’s about looking to the future without fear,” he says.
