Festival Tepi Sawah (3 – 4 June) Tepi Sawah translates as ‘the edge of the rice field’ which is an inspiring name for a festival which is all about a manifestation of our humanity, artistic talents and expression organized by Antida Music Productions. Ultimately it is an art festival for the community with activities including art and environmental workshops, dance and music performances. The lineup for the festival includes Tompi, Dewa Alit, Bona Alit, Sisca Guzheng, Brahma Diva Kencana, Nita Aartsen, Jasmine Okubo, Gustu Bramanta, Tebo Aumbara, Dodi Sambodo and Fascinating Rhythm Community. I am sure that some of these names are familiar but really these artists showcase some of Indonesia’s best talents. Collaborative art performances of music, dance, theatre, cinematography and visual arts and crafts will also be part of the festival. The festival is really about giving the art communities a chance to showcase their work as well as raise awareness about environmental issues and the concept of reduce, reuse and recycle in everyday life. I read recently that France has banned the use of all plastic cups and plates to help protect the environment. I am sure all readers would agree with the ban! Festival Tepi Sawah is ultimately an environmental artt show and is partnering up with Clean Bali Series, a non-profit organization that focuses on n environmental education. Do come along to the festival for what is bound to be a greatt experience.

Little Gladiators: Bali’s Cricket Fights Tajen jangkrik, or Balinese cricket fighting, is an ardent islandwide hobby enjoyed by villagers and city folk during the dry season in Bali, a splendid way for Balinese to spend an idle afternoon, chat with neighbors, boast about their champion crickets and enjoy all the noise and excitement of the fray.

and often kept as pets for their pleasant chirping sound which goes by the delightfully onomatopoeia word ngring, a noise which is said to scare away infestations of mice in the rice fields. A match often takes place in the afternoon in a rural, shady rectangle clearing, well off the beaten track and far away from the prying eyes and ears of the authorities. Men huddle around a small arena measuring perhaps 2 X 4 meters. If it’s a big match, there will be lots of onlookers. Around the perimeter women in small open-air warung sell coffee, kretek clove cigarettes and rice cake snacks.

David Attenborough, Colin McPhee and many other scholars and celebrities have written about Bali’s cricket fights. Raffles noted in his History of Java: “The Balinese are strangers to the vices of drunkenness, libertinism, and conjugal infidelity: their predominant passions are gaming. In these amusements, all the vehemence and energy of their character and spirit is called forth and exhausted.” This is as true today as it was when that observation was published in 1817. Yet few domestic or Westerner visitors have ever seen an actual cricket contest. The closest a tourist gets to the sport are the bamboo containers (krangkeng jangkrik) for fighting crickets found in the outstanding exhibition of household utensils in Denpasar’s Bali Museum. The sport is not restricted to commoners. The rajas of Bali used to engage special retainers to act as royal keeper of crickets whose only job it was to turn the king’s crickets into good fighters. In the early part of the last century, cricket crazy rajas lost whole fortunes, palaces and even wives in cricket fights. Though village fights are not places where a woman likes to be seen, it’s a fallacy that only men engage in fighting crickets. Carrying their prized crickets in their handbags, high society women at school reunions or social arisan group meetings including wives of high officials - stage impromptu bouts in small secret arenas in back yards and parking lots. The arcane blood sport carries with it a tremendous amount of oral history and lore as well as stories of legendary bouts. Every district in Bali has its own customs and traditions that deal with the rules of the match and the care, training and the feeding of the crickets that is meant to increase their strength and health. Predominantly a male-bonding event, the fights are a selfcontained world enclosed by raucous laughter, frenzied yelling and gesticulating which is fascinating to watch. Along with cockfights, there are few more graphic studies of Balinese values and behavior. Though cricket fights use much of the same betting terminology as in cockfights, the betting amounts are dwarfed by the huge sums that are won and lost in the more serious passion of playing the cocks when backers of defeated birds can lose millions of rupiah plus their farms, houses and motorcycles. Since1981, when the government issued a regulation banning all forms of gambling throughout the country, cock- and cricket fighting are deemed illegal activities on Bali. Guards are sometimes posted to make sure participants are not discovered by the police. A player’s stable of crickets is kept in a conveniently small box or cage that allows for quick escape in the event of a police raid, a cat and mouse game in which everyone scatters in all directions. The sport is the ideal pastime for poor farmers who have limited resources. Crickets are free and only need to be fed a few grains of cooked rice, dried singkong (cassava), bits of bread or frangipani flower petals each day. Crickets are kept in special homemade cages made out of free bamboo that grows in the yard. The insects don’t bite, kick, scratch, nibble or make a mess on the floor. The fights last only one or two minutes and do not require records, judges, referees, brokers, time keepers, trainers or handlers. Crickets aren’t only used for fighting but are also raised on egg cartons for bird feed

Because it’s a secretive activity, it is often difficult to find information. As was the case when I sought images for this feature, photos of participants are prohibited. The people involved know beforehand the location and time of the fight, which sometimes occurs on regularly scheduled even or odd days. In Denpasar, the contest could be held inside a family compound deep in the labyrinth of the city’s alleyways.

other young ones. The owner will open the end of his caged cricket so that other owners are able to peer inside to size up the creature. Cages are passed back and forth as men haggle, reject, scorn, exclaim and laugh until the match and the amount of the bet are mutually agreed upon. Reeking of kretek clove smoke, the arena is packed with men three deep fused into a single body. Grown men in intense concentration tickle their crickets with a kekili (tickler) which can be simply a blade of grass or a stiff, thin 20-cm-long palm leaf rib with a tuft of grass at one end. A man sticks the kekili into the open end of the cage to rile up his insect, taking note of how aggressively it reacts. If the prospective opponent is too lethargic, the challenged owner will decline the match. Pairs of cages of opposing crickets are then put aside and the actual battles begin.

Catching, Training and Diet Only one species of cricket found in Bali, Jangkrik Kalung, is considered spirited enough to fight. To us, individual crickets are indistinguishable from one another but devotees can discern subtle differences in appearance and behavior in each one. Only big, strong males with rough bodies and wings are suitable for battle. Though body and mouth size are considered of paramount importance, a cricket’s most valued quality is aggressiveness. The fiercest crickets are not bred but caught in the wild non-irrigated tegal fields. The insects are traditionally caught by young boys after the rice harvest, which usually takes place twice a year, after the wet fields dry out and before new rice is planted. Using flashlights, they are hunted at night when they can be heard chirping. As sound is the only way to detect them, the stalker must sneak up on the insects very quietly and stealthy. The crickets will stop singing when they sense vibration or hear unfamiliar noises. The hunter digs out his prey from cracks in the dry, soft, crumbly soil and inserts them into a cage cut from 10-15 cm long sections of bamboo tubes. One end is plugged by piece of metal, leaves, paper or glass while the other is blocked by the sectional divide of the bamboo. Half a dozen holes running along the whole length allow air and light to enter. In order to maintain a healthy stable of fighting crickets, serious owners collect new combatants every few days. Crickets are given specialized training to prepare them to enter a ring of battle. Threads are tied to one of the rear legs of newly captured specimens that soon kick and struggle against the restraint. This exercise is essential in the insects becoming strong. Whole strings of twirling, thrashing crickets can sometimes be seen hanging from poles around a farmer’s home. Besides the physical exercises, the insects are given massages and lovingly bathed in a shallow dish of water infused with betel pepper leaf juice. Avid devotees put their crickets on a specially prepared diet of hot cabe merah (red chilies) and concocted jamu, a homemade elixir or puree made from the parts of other aggressive fighting creatures – such as geckoes and cicak – which they swear will make them more ferocious. Fighting and Betting Each man brings his own cricket cage, sits on his haunches and prepares for the duel. Just like at a cockfight, the first order of business is for owners to find suitable matches. Mature crickets fight other mature crickets; young ones fight with

It used to be the sport of villagers who would make small bets of a few thousand rupiah, but now that cricket fighting has caught on in Bali’s towns and cities bets of Rp50,000Rp100,000 are more the rule. As pandemonium breaks out, furious side bets are shouted out among those who don’t have a cricket in the ring. Looking for takers, owners wander around calling out the odds. If there is no suitable opponent equal in size and strength that is eager to fight, bettors reduce the odds. No bets are recorded and no IOUs are accepted. No one would ever dare to welch on a bet lest they be barred from attending future matches. Because of all the shouting and confusion, intricate signals have to be used either by waving bills or holding up fingers indicating the number of tens of thousands of rupiah they wish to bet. Bettors indicate their favorite by pointing in the direction – east or south, for example – that the cage containing the cricket they are backing is oriented. Eye contact, a nod or uplifting of the chin confirms that the bet is accepted. The money placed on the ground and the cages are placed together on a small, short wooden table. An intense stillness descends on the nearly impenetrable crowd. The stoppers are removed and the crickets are egged on to fight by their owners who goad them with their kekili through the holes. The losing cricket is the one that retreats from battle but if a high amount – as much Rp2 million - is riding on a fight, the crickets are made to fight to the death to decide the winner. Since onlookers lean into the fight, it’s difficult to see up close, but you’ll soon hear the loser’s moans and groans of disappointment or the winner’s shrieks and cheers. The winner scoops up the wad of rupiah from the ground and cash wordlessly exchanges hands all around as side bets among the spectators are paid off. No one congratulates the winner, sympathizes with the loser, argues or disputes the outcome. After another couple of minutes of frantic betting, the next fight starts. As the crescendo of male voices rises it sounds like a gaggle of geese or the speaking in tongues at a revival meeting. As Raffles wrote in the 19th Century, much of the Balinese character comes to the surface in the cricket and cock fighting rings as it is not just the cocks who are fighting, it’s also the men.

15 Down My Gang & On My Bike I’m done with alang alang. It’s lovely I know, but having lived beneath it for a quarter century I’ve reached an age when it’s just too organic by half, plus the economics are an indulgence that no longer makes sense. I’m ready for the alternatives, so long as hanging ceilings are out. Any residual hankerings have been vanquished by the last rainy season, which we survived, soggy but unbowed, with the aid of a succession of short-lived plastic tarpos and buckets of all shapes and sizes. Same goes for geckos, of whom I was once fondly tolerant. They now seem to have reached infestive proportions , even in our kitchen, which spurs me to action - almost. They’ve pushed their luck too far and I’ve actually considered offing them, but they know I won’t, so I keep meaning to botch up some ingenious trap made out of plastic water bottles with a tasty lure to catch and then release them on the vacant lot across the lane. Somehow I’ve not quite got around to it yet. I’ll say one thing though, the past few months may have been wet, but it’s not been dull. One mid-afternoon during the big April gales, working at my desk in the guest house adjacent to the house, there was a great squall followed by an almighty crack, the building trembled. I looked up and saw nothing. My mind must have refused to believe what was right before my eyes. Going outside to investigate, instead of the earthquake I expected, I was confronted by the massive roots and stump of the 35 metre banyan tree, which we had fondly but foolishly allowed to grow up from a sapling back in 1994 within a few feet of the house (it was something the late Linda Garland bequeathed us). The tree had fallen directly Eastward along the front of the house to the boundary wall of the property. Had it fallen to North or Westward it would have done for all three of us at home at the time. Apart from clipping the corner of our roof the only real damage was the property owner’s shrine. This was flattened. We had had a good relationship with the original owner until he died a few years ago, backed by a strong legal agreement with eight years to run. Didn’t stop the son trying to get us out though. He took it all the way to the Supreme Court and lost. My guess is it was the Gods way of saying, in exactly the appropriate measure, for both of us to get off our respective stuff. Nullah Pratfalls Come rain or shine, my favoured mode of travel within city limits is push bike. Outside the borough it’s Grab or Bluebird. I seldom found driving in Bali a pleasure and we’re happy to have given up having a car a decade ago. Nothing I’ve seen since makes me regret the decision, though I’m happy to note that once again it takes the same 20 minutes to reach the airport from Sanur that it did in 1994. Long may it last... When I ride my bike my wife tries to get me to wear a helmet, and she’s quite right - but I won’t do it. It’s not just that I can’t stand those things that look like a squashed technicolor cockroach but I find any helmet uncomfortable. So I stick to a baseball cap or my Guatamalan, a much-preferred louche cousin of the poncy Panama. Anyhow, so far I’ve been fortunate to avoid any serious spills. That I continue to tempt fate is very clear to me. A knowledge recently re-inforced during the same squally days when the rain came and laid our banyan tree low. During a brief intermission in the torrential day-long rains I embarked on a mission of re-supply that took me across the by-pass. Of course, by the time it came to head home the rain was teeming down in buckets again, donner und blitzen - the whole horror show. After 15 minutes I lauched myself into

the deluge. Despite the bad weather there was a long queue of cars and bikes at the traffic lights on the by-pass. In my impatience and despite the obvious risk I chose to ride on the inside of the traffic, an area awash with waters of unknown depth. I almost got away way with it, but sure enough within yards of the lights, down I went into an uncovered storm drain, bike and all. It could have been really nasty, a bone-breaker or worse, but I was a lot luckier than I deserved. The nullah was not deep, or been filled up with earth and rubbish, the bike was undamaged and I got away with some minor if painful cuts on the fingertips of one hand. I’m still going to stick with my Guatemalan and baseball cap on a good day but in a storm, if called upon to brave the elements, I will don a cheap plastic poncho and a perfectly good pudding bowl motorbike helmet I have tucked away somewhere. What I will not do is be so stupid as to pedal through flood waters at the side of a road. Municipal Puddles Forever! Sanur is rather like New Zealanders, quietly eccentric. It must be about a quarter of a century ago that Joop Ave, the loudly eccentric then Minister of Tourism, along with Sanur’s city fathers did a quaint little red brick road decree. It’s had its ups and downs this red brick road, but it is now a well-accepted aspect of Sanur’s beach life and can be judged a success. As can the beach restoration, remedying the neighbouring folly of the Serangan Causeway. I’m not so sure about the move to pave over the nullahs and storm drains that was put into effect a decade or so ago. That was eccentric too, for sure. Witness those odd yellow tiles with a raised motif running down the middle of our pavements. What is that? To stop us coming a cropper on an icy day? Or did some connected tile-maker just happen to be in the right place at the right time? If so I’d like to have had shares in the company. Whatever the case, we have to wonder if it did very much to ease the flooding or indeed make life any better for pedestrians. It seems to me, given the uneven nature of the experience and it’s co-option by retailers and bands of free-lance drivers, we might as well be walking in the road just as we did in the old days.

Perhaps proof of the puddle can be demonstrated by the many ponds that appeared post-deluge along the roads in Sanur. Within a week or so, as the rains abated they began to disappear. But some of lingered on and still here almost three months later. I know, I pedal through one almost every day outside the Sanur Hyatt. At its zenith this was a 40 metre long pond, now shrunk to 20 metres, but it’s still there. Having covered the storm drains does anybody ever actually clear them? I know its possible in theory because there are concrete slabs, which can be removed to allow for this, as all too frequently I trip over the iron handles. Other than this, I’ve never seen anybody clearing debris. Perhaps there is a cadre of nightime storm-drain troopers on the job. I like to think so, but then I will never know because my wife doesn’t like me cycling in the dark and wants me to wear gymmies with electic lights and fluorescent stripes on them if I do.

Dr GOOGLE…….

to have a quick consultation and visit with your healthcare provider especially if you have a multitude of complex symptoms.

When you are living on an Island where medical diagnosis and treatment can sometimes be questionable, it is very tempting to get out your smart-phone or computer and try to sort out exactly what your problem is by yourself.

read these sites, and combine the hands-on exam with the cyber information.

Considering the time you will probably spend in traffic jams and waiting rooms if you want to consult a doctor, many of us feel that such symptom checkers can function as a tool for both diagnosis and treatment. It’s quick, easy and may help us in a pinch. According to results of a new study (in the USA however), doctors are more effective than symptom checkers to obtain an accurate diagnosis - by over two to one.

If you don not have access to a good medical professional, a reputable medical website or app may suffice as a screening tool.

Sure, for a simple illness, these applications may actually suffice, however there are several factors that these systems often do not take into consideration.

How to Use Google Effectively for Personal Health Concerns?

There are thousands of symptom checkers on-line. Some that I would recommend would be • https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/symptom-checker • http://www.mayoclinic.org/symptom-checker/selectsymptom/itt-20009075 • http://symptoms.webmd.com/#introView

• They are unable to get a “visual” or a general “feel” of how you are. • They often do not consider your geographical location. A fever in Bali is probably going to mean something totally different than a fever in New York, London or Tokyo. • There is often no consideration of your previous medical history.

Such computer-based algorithms and symptom checkers can be an effective aid for healthcare professionals to broaden their differential diagnosis & treatment options. But don’t forget, these medical professionals are trained to

Symptom checkers as a stand-alone are not ideal, and may not provide the entire picture or cause of a patient’s symptoms. In short, nothing can replace a well-performed history and physical in an office setting, urgent care or emergency department, with access to diagnostic instruments, most physicians would agree. “The idea that one of their own (human-kind), a peer, maybe even a fellow survivor of their same disease, is there holding their hand, guiding them through their treatment and discussing all available options is something technology will never create. This is the ‘art’ of medicine. The ‘science’ can be replicated, sure, and in fact help in diagnosis and treatment plans, but the humanity of one life impacting another will never be matched,” (Dr. Satjit Bhusri, attending cardiologist at Lenox Hill Hospital).

PARADISE... IN SICKNESS & IN HEALTH

But Doctors Use Google As Well Don’t They? It’s true, doctors in the digital age often consult evidencebased websites (e.g. up-todate.com, e-med, medscape etc) when faced with a complicated set of signs and symptoms, and use mobile apps developed by such sites that offer a broad differential diagnosis coupled with online links to studies.

C/He/I-04 Jan 17

I would strongly recommend avoiding chat rooms or face book to assist in your diagnosis. Most people that post medical information as an answer to a certain query are not qualified, lack experience or are quoting from one personal medical experience, which indeed may have nothing to do with yours. I currently run an online consultation service from my Sanur office, however not all conditions can be managed without a hands on examination. So the take-home message is that it might actually be better

On the Road to Personal Empowerment I have been on the road for the past two weeks – first to Chiangrai, Thailand, where I held a five day Shamanic Retreat training for five women and then to Hong Kong, where I also spent five days offering private sessions and a Radiantly Well workshop for five women. It seems that the number five was a theme for me, so I decided to look up the numerological meaning of five. I discovered that the spiritual significance of this number is freedom and manifestation. It also represents the number of the five elements: earth, air, water, fire and ether. Within these five elements is everything that is needed for creative manifestation. Five is a very free spirited and creative number that aligns to freedom. It is the number of taking action and seeking change in life. Other attributes of the number five include: individualism, release and surrender, courage, health and healing, telepathy, vision and visionary, expansion, magnetism, imagination, intelligence and making positive life choices and decisions. My intention for this trip was to share tools for personal empowerment to women who were seeking to step into a greater vision of themselves. For me this meant that I could facilitate in a way that would allow them to recognize and claim their personal freedom, release and surrender, discover their courage and learn how to make positive life choices and decisions. Wow! So when I found out that these qualities were exactly the same as the number five, I was honestly quite amazed at how right in sync everything was during my time in both Chiangrai and Hong Kong. Now more than ever, we are all stepping into our greater vision of ourselves and the world and truly manifesting whatever our heart desires. That’s magic!

C/He/G-18 Jan. 17

The women I had the honor and privilege to work with on this trip were all incredibly gifted and passionate – they just didn’t recognize their gifts and if they did, they weren’t fully claiming them. As we worked together utilizing different methods, whether it was taking Shamanic journeys to connect with their power animals and helping Spirits, or clearing limiting beliefs using my ‘Positive Imprinting Protocol’, the results were quite similar. They began to peel away all that no longer served them – all the negative self talk, judgments of self, not feeling pretty enough or good enough, not feeling they deserved to love and accept themselves or not believing that it was possible to have time and be a good mom who has a career. It was beautiful to witness each of these women from all parts of the world strip away their old stories and inventions and get to the core essence of love for self. There were some tears, lots of laughter as we joined together as women who are on the road to personal empowerment. It is not always an easy road as there will inevitably be potholes or speed bumps that slow us down along the way, but we will keep going because we know that there’s no looking back for us. The past has already happened and the future is yet to be realized. Each moment that we choose to be aware, to honor and appreciate who we are and the life we’ve created, this is what allows us to surrender our past wounds and be truly empowered. There is no time for victimhood. That time has long passed. As empowered women we can show the way to other women who are yet to be empowered. They see us walking tall and loving ourselves, and then this consciousness gently seeps into their consciousness and starts to change the way they feel about themselves and so on and so on and so on. It’s like the 100th monkey effect. If one woman chooses to be empowered then other women start catching on and mimicking this consciousness. As we change ourselves we change the world. So my dear readers, men and women alike, I ask all of you to reach out to a woman in your life who needs to discover her personal power. Share your tools with her, be a friend to her but most of all encourage her to let go of her old stories and choose to move forward into a new life of adventure, freedom and joy. Yes this will take courage as change for most of us is pretty scary, but it’s also so exhilarating to know that you are now choosing to be empowered and to live the highest version of you. And so I end this with a question for your empowerment: What energy, space and consciousness can my body and I be that will allow us to be a phenomenal being beyond this reality for all eternity?

Finns Birthday Present to You!

If you live, work, have a business or just have some exciting news about this area then we want to hear from you! Canggu News submissions for future editions are welcome to be emailed to: canggueditor@yahoo.com If you are submitting information about a future event, please be sure to provide accurate details regarding time and place and include pictures where relevant.

you will only have to wait in suspense for another 10 days until they open their doors for what’s set to be Bali’s best pool party. Everyone knows Sunday’s and pool parties are an endless love affair, and so do Finns. On the 11th of June, the opening party of LIQUID is where you will want to be. In true Sunday session style, LIQUID invites you and your best swimwear attire to join Finns from 3pm - 3am to get wet and go wild.

Finns Beach Club is turning their first one year older and a lot wiser, as Bali’s Best Beach Club knows how to celebrate in true style. On the 1st of June, Finns will be letting their hair down and staying up all night to get lucky as the party kick starts at 9pm with a lineup set to exceed expectations. It’s hard to believe that Finns has been making headlines for 12 months now, and it’s even harder to believe that they are only just getting started. With a red hot ‘you’ve seen nothing yet’ attitude, Finns is getting the party started with a birthday present for you. That’s right. Along with FREE entry, they are giving away 1000 free drinks cards as just one of their many birthday treats. Since Finns knows everyone’s favorite kind of party is a birthday party, be prepared to embrace a once in a lifetime experience, because you only turn 1 once, right? What’s a

birthday party without face paint and body art, or stilt walkers, dancers, fireworks, party food, sweet candy, a late night dip in the pool, and a line up of DJ’s that will leave you begging for an encore and so much more. Winning multiple awards within its first year of opening, Finns has made sure that everyone who came, saw and conquered its picturesque Beach Club has been delighted by all their senses. The sight of Finns breathtaking scenery, smell of their world class food, taste of their delicious cocktails, sound of their live music combined with the best Berawa waves, and the feel of its electric ambience is no surprise why Finns was voted as Bali’s Best Beach Club. But now, not even your sixth sense will guess what happens next as Finns recreates itself as Bali’s hottest nightlife destination. With world class parties set to open with Finns 1st Birthday’s,

It’s time to lap up the Best Beach Club in Bali all day and night long as Finns After Dark presents KARNAVAL, RIMBA and LIPS. You guessed it. Everything welcome to the jungle, from everything circus o’le to ladies night. Wild is an understatement. Along with their LIQUID Sunday’s, Finns is exciting by day and electric by night. But don’t take it from me, it’s time for you to taste, feel, smell, hear and see for yourself. As the countdown to the biggest Birthday Party begins, its Finn’s own personal season of giving. A big Happy Birthday to them means 1,000 free drinks cards available for you, and the start of the after dark and out of this world parties you’re set to see. So whether you think seeing is believing or believing is seeing, you won’t believe what you’re about to see at Finns After Dark. 11th E Series @ Pan Pacific a Fitting Finale A fun run in the early hours of a Sunday morning may seem less than ideal for some, but any doubts I may have harboured about rising before the sun and making my pre dawn ride out to Tanah Lot were quickly erased once I arrived at Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali’s spectacular golf course - truly a stunning place! This was to be the 11th and final instalment for the E Series Family Fun, an event that has grown to become a favourite among runners and family funsters since the first run at this hotel five years ago. Since 2012 the E Series Fun Runs have been held at Nirwana with 2km, 4km and 8km courses winding their way through the hotel grounds, but Sunday May 7th’s race was special and this time, the track meandered around the golf course providing runners with a vista of surf and emerald greens. Sadly, due to new ownership, the hotel and Bali’s most picturesque golf course will soon close for renovation, putting an end to the E-Series events as we have come to know them. This particular race was widely advertised and promoted as usual, however even event organisers could not have anticipated the level of positive response and number of competitors who turned up to compete along with their throngs of supporters. Race registration was available online prior to the event yet

the response was so great, organisers were forced to limit any further participation once the number of competitors reached 450! More than 4 times the average number of runners in previous E Series runs, Sunday’s run, the last hurrah, seemed to garner more interest than ever before and the pre race excitement was palpable! Whether it was a case of nostalgia or the last opportunity to get a glimpse of this spectacular property, the event was a sellout and management from Nirwana Pan Pacific along with long time race organisers and affiliates Pete and Yvette Manuel from 15Fit could not have been happier! But none could have more elated than Chris Sperduto (aka Helmet Man) from Project Protect; a highly successful initiative in conjunction with Rotary Club Canggu to supply local school children with a motorcycle helmet and educate them about the importance of wearing them properly. Project Protect is one of the recipients of the Embrace Kids Program. Proceeds from race registrations and silent auctions at each E Series event go entirely towards the program and through “Embrace Kids”, Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali Resort has delivered continuous safety and education initiatives for the long-term improvement of the schools in local villages and their students. To date, the Project Protect venture has already delivered over 2000 helmets

to local school children, a number that is certain to increase significantly after Sunday’s race! Despite an obvious element of sadness that this would be the last E Series as we knew it at Nirwana Pan Pacific, it was fantastic to finish on such a high note. The 11th E Series may have been the end of an era as far as races at Pan Pacific goes, but that doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of them! A little birdie may have overheard a conversation regarding a new and exciting future home for these family fun(draising) runs, so stay tuned for more E Series news as we await details regarding the new home for this popular event in 2018.

Food, Funky Tunes & Freebies @ Finns Recreation Club any melancholic mood fade away into their Frozen Margarita! The evening is an all ages affair and Finns Recreation Club has definitely kept the kids in mind with a swag of activities to keep them active, happy and out of your hair. Akin to a carnival, your young family members are going to be stoked to discover jumping castles, farm yard animals, pony rides, balloon art, face painting and everyone, (Club member or not) is welcome to ride the slides at Splash Water Park free of charge from 3pm. There will be a variety of family friendly performances; a dance recital and special appearance from the island’s youngest DJ, Little Ale. At just seven years of age, Bali’s very own miniature music sensation has already achieved acclaim as a diva on the decks! With a love for electronic music that stemmed from following her DJ dad to various gigs, Little Ale has developed her own distinct musical style and is hard at work in the studio to complete her first record with label, Bali Praia. Identity crisis? I doubt it! The Canggu Club might be getting a new name but it definitely retains its banner as Bali’s premier sports and entertainment venue. From June 1st, The Canggu Club will be known as Finns Recreation Club. To celebrate their new moniker they’re throwing a bit of a shindig on Friday June 2nd from 3pm ’til late and everybody is welcome! Finns Recreation Club is opening the doors to the general public from 3pm until 10pm and it’s free entry for everyone to come and have a bit of fun at their inaugural Music & Food Festival. Promising to be the first of many, the evening will be a celebration of everything tempting and tasty. With a focus on food, fun times, cool tunes and even some free stuff! If you are like me and love your tucker, Fridays (every day for that matter..) are all about food and fizzy stuff and there will be an abundance of gastro delights with live cooking stations

dishing up delicious street style fare the likes of Asian noodles, fresh pasta, Finns famous burgers, French style baguettes and many more to tantalise your buds. The Smoke House Restaurant will be open for business and you’ll be following your nose and that divine aroma of something succulent and smoky to where Smoke House staff are at in order to get your hands on some of their tasty free tidbits! The Sports Bar will be open as usual with Friday night’s football fixture telecast live but if you’d prefer to stay where the action, music and entertainment is outside, you can also whet your whistle at the many beverage huts set up around the club lawn. Keep a tropical mood with fresh coconuts and a Finns signature cocktail or celebrate with a glass of cider, wine or champas. Now if Canggu Club members might be feeling a little maudlin about the change of name, a voucher entitling them to three free drinks for the evening is enough to make

As the sun gives way to starlight and Finns Recreation Club lawn transforms into a scene of lantern lit tents and street style ambience, settle down into bean bags and deck chairs. Enjoy a meal, music and browse the market stalls should you feel inclined for a bit of retail therapy. Finns Recreation Club is making these music, market and food Fridays a monthly affair and vendors are invited to contact the team at Club reception should they be interested in holding a stall at what is likely to become a regular gig! Get your crew together for a Friday evening out that the whole family can be a part of and we’ll see you at Finns Recreation Club for June 2nd. Growing Papaya from Seed ‘Dear Dr. Kris, I have seen papaya trees growing all over the place and am questioning how easy would it be to grow my own from the seeds taken from a fruit. How many years would it take to produce my own fruit, and what sort of growing conditions does it need. Should I start off in pots or the ground. I really love papaya juice and would like to grow my own. Any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Tony, Kerobokan Bali.’ Papaya originated in the tropics of South America, but today you can find them growing everywhere from the tropics to temperate regions all over the world. Papaya is really at home in the tropical climate of Indonesia and you can often see them growing wild in random places such as vacant lots or even by the roadside of a dusty city street. It will grow from the coast to the mountains, and everywhere in between. Compared to other tropical fruits, papaya is one of the easiest and quickest to grow from seed to fruit, usually within as little time as year or two. To grow papaya you will need plenty of sunlight, water and good soil. It will not tolerate shade well, so raise it in a position that makes the most of available sunlight. Papaya can be started off in pots but it is usually best sown direct into the ground as it is highly susceptible to transplant shock. They don’t transplant well, and any sort of root disturbance really sets them back and can easily be fatal. The most efficient way to grow papayas is to simply plant the seeds direct into their final intended position. If you don’t have good soil, then make some. Dig a hole half a meter across and fill it with a mix of compost and soil. Even better, prepare at least two or three such planting beds around the garden. Scoop out your seeds and sow them in clumps of up 10 or more seeds together into the ground at depth of a few centimetres. Seeds always germinate better when sown in clumps. Water them in and keep the soil moist. In just a few weeks you should have papaya seedlings popping up everywhere! Let them go for a few more weeks, by which time there will be a noticeable variance in size and vigour amongst the seedlings. That’s why we planted so many. Now thin out the

C/Ho/I-26 April 17

seedlings by pulling out the weaker, leaving only the strongest specimens to kick on. Only keep the very best! Papaya plants can be male, female, or bisexual. The male papayas won’t bear fruit. You need to make sure that you have females or bisexual plants amongst your seedlings. Papaya starts to show flowers once growth has reached about 1-1.5 metres. The males flower first, with long, thin stalks with several small blooms. Female flowers are usually single blooms, bigger, and very close to the trunk. Remove most of the male plants. You will only need one male for every ten to fifteen female plants to ensure good pollination.

From there maintain regular watering until the plants become established. Once the plants have reached beyond 2 metres, they should be well rooted and more able to survive off the natural rainfall, with the occasional top up with water every now and then if conditions are extremely dry. And that’s all there is to it. You should end up with a few strong, healthy female plants per bed and a male plant somewhere in the garden. If you are growing your papayas in good soil with full sun then you could be picking fruit within a year or two. Most papaya trees will do well for at least 5 years and beyond, though decreasing yields may be experienced as the tree ages and it will also become more susceptible to pests. For a steady supply stagger your sowings so that you have trees at varying stages. Another problem people encounter is getting the fruit down from the tall tree. An established tree can be

C/Ns/G-6 July 16

cut down from which multiple crowns will re-grow as side shoots, bearing fruit much closer to ground level. Papayas are fast growing attractive trees that have more uses beyond that of just producing the delicious ripe fruit. They are attractive landscaping plants with a palm like form when mature and can be grown in clumps or rows with the benefit of providing shade as they grow larger and the crown starts to develop. There are many health benefits attributed to the papaya fruit, but did you know that the seeds and leaves also contain beneficial health properties? The leaves have both culinary and medicinal uses. The papaya leaf contains beta-carotene, calcium, vitamin A, C and E. Fresh papaya leaves, although very bitter, can be boiled into a healthy tea. Most natural medicines have this characteristic of bitterness. If you’re not brave enough to drink the papaya leaf tea on its own, sweeten it with honey or sugar. The papaya leaf tea is said to be good for the blood, and is used as all round health tonic and immunity booster. This tea is also used as in traditional medicine to stimulate breast milk production for mothers with newborn babies. There are many types of traditional jamu in Indonesia that include either papaya leaf or seed in the recipe. At the very least you can add steamed papaya leaf to other meals and soups. One of the best alternative uses for papaya that not many know about is to substitute the seed for pepper. That’s right, papaya seeds have a peppery zing! So, whether it’s store bought or home grown, scoop the seeds out and dry them on a paper towel then use them as you would pepper. There are so many seeds in one fruit that you will easily be able to take care of all your pepper needs, it really is worth it. What’s even more curious is that dried papaya seed actually looks a lot like pepper too! It may just be the most nutritious pepper that you ever had! `

Clean Drinking Water for SD2 Pecatu Nearly three years ago Ms. Lea Hadley, Principal of Harmony Primary School in Western Australia, together with the support of some enthusiastic parents started a school project with SD2 Pecatu School through the Adopt A School Association of WA. Its aim was to broaden the children’s understanding of other cultures, languages and to reinforce Asian Perspectives across the Australian Curriculum. Ms Siobhan Gillam and Ms Lidia MacDonald visited SD2 Pecatu school several times each, and formed a Bali Committee which communicates directly with both schools’ principals and Bali coordinators. At the end of 2015, Harmony Primary School year 6 graduating students kindly raised funds to build an sports/ playground area for the children of SD2 Pecatu. This project is still in the process of being completed. In 2016/2017 Harmony Primary School also raised funds to install a water filtration system at SD2 Pecatu School to provide free drinkable water to all of their students. The Aquafilter water filter system has been kindly provided by Aqua Filtration International Pty Ltd at below cost price, installation and commissioning was provided free of charge by local company and agent for Aquafilter systems, Tropical Pools and Spa. Harmony Primary School Community contributed directly to this clean water project by cooking and selling home made cakes at their Junior Sport Carnival and running local sausage sizzles. Harmony Primary School is proud to contribute to this project to assist Balinese families with the cost of drinkable water on daily bases, addressing water pollution issues and aligning SD2 Pecatu School with HPS policy of sustainability.

Talk to the Ants Jewel Topsfield, the Australian Fairfax newspaper group’s Indonesian correspondent, wrote a lovely piece recently after an extended interview she had with Prabowo Subianto, who probably likes to think of himself as president-in-waiting. We’ll have to wait until 2019 to find out, but in the meantime he’s an interesting subject. Some people seem to think that he’s the fifth horseman of the apocalypse. He’s not, of course. He’s a former army general with some unanswered questions on his record and an Indonesian politician, ditto. He’s far from being in a class of his own on those scores. He possesses the same auto-response mechanism as exists in any Indonesian (and people of other countries too) where it is imagined that a slight has been offered. Foreigners are not meant to criticise, and will be glowered at or worse if they do. There are no surprises in that, locally, politically or otherwise. Nor is Indonesia a western liberal democracy. It never will be. Prabowo doesn’t think Indonesia will ever become a fundamentalist Islamic state, either. Indonesians like music and dancing, he noted. He’s right. The archipelago is very much its own cultural petri dish, whatever the small local contingent of Arabian adherents might think and seek to promote via their hired nasi bungkus mobs. On that point, taking the argument a little further, it seems silly to get all het up about hijabs. My granny would never go out without a head covering, and she was as Christian and English as you could wish to meet. Times, fashions, and social and religious observances change. The human story is one of constant flux. Prabowo, who has been criticised – largely outside Indonesia – for talking with the unfunny fundamentalists of the FPI, is more interesting still on quite another aspect of his character. He negotiates with ants, citing the example from Islamic texts of King Solomon. The ants in Solomon’s day did a deal with the palace, staying out of it so as not to be crushed by his soldiers’ boots. Ants are a eusocial species: they form cooperative groups, often in very large numbers, and create caste systems and practise instinctive altruism in the interests of the community. Bees, wasps, termites and some other insect species do the same. Prabowo told Topsfield he wouldn’t have any living creatures harmed on his property – they were talking at his ranch in the hills of West Java – and that he always takes a special interest in the welfare of the ants there. We do the same at The Cage, especially around the infinity edge of our small swimming pool, where many of them live at risk of disruption or worse when it rains and the water level rises. Everything has its place. Human hubris has sadly sidelined this essential fact of life.

There’s Always a SNAG Some men just don’t get it. Well, most, probably. The masculine gender seems to have particular difficulty keeping pace with cultural and social advance. This is not just a western thing. It often seems that there are only two races on Planet Earth: Female and Male. The Shirley Valentine holiday sector is quite large, therefore, as a result of many things, including but not limited to misogyny. Generally, and beneficially, most people keep their private affairs private. But the “holiday fling” has a long history and certainly predates the social liberation of the 1960s, now sadly under threat again from Those Who Think They Know Best. It’s a mystery why the romantic affairs of others should be so prominently and pruriently a public interest. Surely, that’s what erotic fiction is for; or porn, which of course is illegal in Indonesia, like so many other things that nevertheless go on willy-nilly here? So our eye was caught by an article in a recent online Seminyak Times post, relating to the activities of SNAGs in the more mannered portions of the companion trade here. That’s SNAGs as in Sensitive New Age Gigolos: Kuta cowboys who’ve worked out that it’s nice to shower, to have a capacity to communicate in more than grunts, and to look a little kempt. The article quoted a SNAG called Steven, of mixed Balinese and Japanese heritage, who says he sees around four clients a month, from the Australian-Japanese-Korean-Russian cohorts of the female traveller market, and that only about half of them want sex as part of the deal. Well, women have always been more sensible than men about

HECTOR’S such things. Dinner and a laugh, flirty or otherwise, is often much more fun than a clumsy grapple and some probably unsatisfactory rumpy-pumpy. For men as well, we note, those of the sentient variety, at least. It’s different at beer-goggles time, naturally, but who wants to go there? Though we repeat: it’s a mystery why private arrangements outside the realms of fiction are of any interest to other people. Being nosey is nasty, and being proscriptively judgmental is a waste of time. So carry on girls – and boys.

It Won’t Go Away We’re used to traffic congestion in Bali. There often seems no reason for the giant tailback in which you find yourself before you have an opportunity to consult the map app in your phone and plot an escape route, if you can. But Slow Motion Melee is a fact of life here. Some traffic jams are for a good cause, though, such as the one that gridlocked much of Sanur on Sunday, May 7, when there was another mass protest over the plutocratic plan to turn Benoa Bay into Port Excrescence in hot pursuit (surprise!) of capitalist profit. The top-down nature of politics here reflects the culture of the island – as it does throughout Indonesia – but the guys at the top seem to have forgotten the grassroots democracy that has always informed local life. You can be the Big Panjandrum, if you’re in the now modified governing elite, and it’s your turn, or something. But ultimately you must do what the people want, or that they can be persuaded to desire. If you don’t do that, eventually you’ll be out of a job. There’s no sign that the mass of Balinese want Tomy Winata’s desecration of Benoa Bay to proceed. The demonstrators, their organisations (including ForBALI whose flags are everywhere) and the local communities aren’t going to shut up. They shouldn’t, and more power to them for insisting that they won’t, and for continuing to point out that Bali’s provincial government is on the wrong tram.

On Your Bike Things must be a bit flat at the wink and nod end of the massage trade here. The Diary, while defiantly young at heart and – to the astonishment of many lovely local people – still perfectly capable of standing up and moving around, even at a fast trot if necessary, is nevertheless in no way a spry youth, and has never been a middle-aged lair. We would not, we’d have thought, be in that cohort of temporarily present foreign gentlemen on whom the rub-and-tug ladies would want to waste their marketing time. So it was a surprise the other day when, strolling down Jl. Danau Tamblingan in Sanur, we were accosted by a man on a motorbike, who executed a perfect stop-on-a-Rp1000 coin manoeuvre and asked if we’d like a massage. “Not on your bike,” was our first, unuttered, response. “Not on your life” was the second, also unexpressed. It doesn’t do to be rude. Neither would we want to obstruct anyone’s business of the day. There’s a market for that sort of thing. We’re just not in it. We smiled instead and said, “No thank you.” He looked disappointed, poor fellow, but he smiled back and waved – it’s that sort of thing that makes living in Bali such a joy – and rode off in search of more likely quarry. We reported the incident to the Distaff. She likes a giggle. We’d been on our way to Chic salon to collect her after a coif and had only minutes before left Randy’s, the nice little place on the bendy bit towards the northern end of Tamblingan that we often visit when in Sanur. There, we’d had an individual apple pie and ice cream (Canadian individual size: we’d struggled as always, but it was worth it) and several short espressos. “Where is your wife?” the lovely waitperson had inquired when we sat down. “Hair salon,” was our response. “Ah,” said the waitperson, with a little smile. She knew there’d be orders for several espressos.

Pak Gede, known to his friends as Parjo, was born in Galiukir village in Pupuan in 1975 to traditional coffee farmer parents. Parjo was traditionally schooled in Tabanan until 19 years of age. In 1992, he left for Yogyakarta to attend college but returned to Bali in 1993 to pursue job opportunities. Through the years, he has dabbled in retail, worked at the family coffee farm and as a river and trekking guide. In 2005, Parjo established CofeRait, a coffee brand that embodied the principal of fair trade. Parjo partnered with JED (Jaringan Ekowisata Desa) and the Wisnu Foundation and in 2015 in Kiadan in Badung District, Parjo established the agro-tourism “coffee park.”

How did you get into the coffee business? The family’s Robusta coffee farm has been passed down through the generations since Dutch rule in the 18th century. My father passed away in 2016 and my mother has since retired from the farm. Today, my youngest brother is in charge of the everyday operation. My time is spent educating the public about the coffee production supply chain through CofeRait and Geo Coffee, as well as running various projects associated with the coffee park.

gas and waste management. All these projects redistribute wealth by increasing income at village level. JED, the Village Ecotourism Network, launched in 2002 in response to Bali’s tourism trends, also plays a vital role. This organization is owned by the communities of four Balinese villages – Kiadan Pelaga, Dukuh Sibetan, Tenganan Pegringsingan and Ceningan Island - with the administrative help of the Wisnu Foundation. Its mission is to protect the island’s culture and natural resources.

Why did you start the coffee park?

How does your coffee park contribute to the effort?

The farm is an excellent model of how tourism is able to supplement the income of the farmer. Early on, I realized that coffee farmers were selling the green beans on the market, but were buying back the end product produced by others in the supply chain. I inevitably asked the question, “Why is a cup of coffee that is sold to a tourist the same price as a kilo of coffee that is sold by the farmer?”

The journey of coffee from seed to cup in the coffee park helps restore the balance. In 2005, the village people in Kiadan were producing coffee and selling it as green Arabica beans. They were buying back their own coffee after processing as instant, packaged coffee and missing out on the higher share in the supply chain. In 2015, as part of the coffee park project, all stages of production were pulled back through the supply chain and embedded in Kiadan. This redistributed the wealth, returning some of it back to the village.

How did this imbalance happen? There has always been reciprocity between Bali’s “ridges” (the mountainous areas) and the “reefs” (the coastal plains). The mountains have in the past delivered their abundance of water to the plains. The plains in turn have used that water and brought money and other resources to the mountains, completing the loop. In modern times, the balance has been de-stabilized by the impact of tourism. The plains now no longer provide a sustainable return to the mountains. The coffee park aims to close the “Ridges to Reef” (mountains to plains) loop by bringing the various players in coffee production and consumption closer together.

Has the project had a positive financial impact in mountain communities?

What has been the economic impact?

The tourism sector is definitely part of the loop and the coffee park projects provide many opportunities, including educating coffee drinkers about the seed to cup process. A trek through our jungle-like gardens planted in mixed-crop coffee, cinnamon, vanilla, clove, cocoa and many other plants is about education. Tourists are able to watch the organic coffee making process, meet local farmers and learn which plants are used for what. They gain in-depth insight into the work involved in filling your coffee cup and behind the scenes issues of staying afloat in the coffee business. Tourists can even get involved in the harvesting of coffee.

Economic inequality has been exacerbated by a shift in the balance of power. The plains people, influenced by foreigners, became strong negotiators. The mountain people however find themselves supplying resources and commodities to the plains people at unsustainable, non-fair trade prices. Look at the lifestyle of fish. Fish do not realize their environment is made of water; so do not notice the importance of the natural resources all around them until they are removed from the water. Please give an example… The distribution of wealth in Bali is vastly skewed by tourism activity. Take Badung, the second largest income-generating district in Indonesia. While Bali’s mountain people lack abundance, the plains people of Badung are experiencing a damaging carbon and waste footprint, which also exacts a high social price. We are deeply committed to restoring the cultural, spiritual and economic balance between the island’s poor mountain people and the more affluent plains people. How can Bali’s farms become more sustainable? The Wisnu Foundation has led the environmentally and developmentally sustainable modeling of eco- and agrotourism across a variety of assets and resources, operating in 18 Balinese villages. These include coffee production, wine making, coconut sugar, corn sugar, cow feed production, bio

Yes, and the financial benefits are growing. Thirty per cent of the profit from the Kiadan project is contributed to developing new projects in Catur (Arabica) and Padangan (Robusta). Both projects are focused on passion, hard work and education as the source of entrepreneurship and not merely the desire for financial gain. What does the coffee park offer for tourists?

It’s a traditional Balinese tale but could not be more relevant to the planet today. As yet there is no date set for a Bali performance, but I’m optimistic!

The menu has just the right number of choices – don’t you hate too many decisions on the weekend? – with something for the health conscious, the decadent, the sweet and the savoury-toothed person in your group. Update

Habitat has been very quick to establish itself as the trendy new boy of Ubud. The reasons are simple. Great location [on Monkey Forest Road at the Padang Tegal end and directly opposite the giant new car park for the Monkey Forest], friendly and professional young management and staff and an atmosphere that is just so relaxing whether you select a table on the street-front terrace or inside in the air-con. However the major attraction is the innovative menu, that is where the money is! New dishes seem to be constantly created here, what a change from the same-same of most Bali cafes. Naturally not all can work but those that do are WOW! The all day breakfast is popular here, and the place has become famous for its Eggs Benedict dishes, many of which are done with a twist. Now comes the most unique creation ever…one with crumbed eggs! The eggs are first poached then coated with potato flour and breadcrumbs and flash fried. They sit on strips of crisp bacon on muffin halves. Poached eggs are one of those things that sadly are a disaster more often than they are done well. A perfect poached egg is heaven! These one at Habitat have that great combination of a firm white and still soft yolk. The finishing touch is the accompanying Sriratcha [from Chon Buri in SE Thailand] Hollandaise sauce, with its delicate chilli taste [pictured]. Another new dish that attracted my attention was their Nano Nano Chicken. The fillet is rolled around bay leaf infused toasted bread, marinated for 24 hours and then char-grilled, sounds very intriguing ..I must try that one soon.

The Tasting Club is found upstairs at Mamasan, on Jln. Kerobokan. Only open evenings it is becoming the haunt of ‘foodies’ both local and visiting tourists. It is a haven for those who want to explore exotic, and unusual, tastes. The street chef extraordinaire, Will Meyrick, continues to explore the villages of Asia to delight, and sometimes shock, our taste buds. Latest additions are a Thai style steamed pork and prawn dumpling with peanut, palm sugar and shisho leaf and a Tuna Sashimi with watermelon, yuzu, chilli flakes and pork floss. My favourite dish at The Tasting Club is still the Beef Tartar from the hill tribes of Laos, with smoked eggplant, quail egg and rice cake.

Massimo never rests on his laurels. Just because his Jln. Tamblingan, Sanur restaurant always seems to be full he is still constantly adding new dishes to tempt you. The latest are some new pasta varieties; Tortelloni filled with osso buco and Ravioloni filled with chicken cacciatore. For those of us millions who do not speak Italian… Massimo explains…the suffix tells the size, so as Tortelli is normal size, so Tortellini is smaller and Tortelloni is larger…the same for the Ravioli, so Ravioloni are big sachets to fully exploit the tasty fillings.

TJ’s To Go is situated at the corner of TJ’s restaurant on Poppies Lane, Kuta. It is a Wrap and Churros bar, open from 4.00 p.m., every day. The Wraps can be Fajitas [Marinated, grilled steak with oven baked vegetables, guacamole, sour cream & salsa verde. Rolled up in a soft flour tortilla], Chicken Rendang [Coconut chicken rendang, with guacamole, sour cream and salsa verde, Rolled in a soft flour tortilla, or Pork Kebab [chunks of pork loin with onion, mushrooms, tomato and peppers. Rolled in a soft flour tortilla with salsa tomat and sour cream]. The Churros [a Spanish choux-based fried pastry] are with many flavours including Chocolate Chilli and Strawberry as well as the ever popular Cinnamon and Sugar. Graze is an all day diner, street-side in front of the majestic Maya Sanur. Open from 7.00 a.m. for that early breakfast and all day till mid evening for just a coffee, or with a snack, light meal or something heavier? They must have the largest coffee range in Sanur, all the standards plus quite a few special specials, try the Black Forest [with chocolate syrup, whipped cream and red cherry] or a Peppermint Mocha Cappucino? Breakfast is my favourite meal of the day and at Graze the options are endless. Now they have solved that problem of where to go, late afternoon, for a snack and a sip! Every day, even on weekends, between 5.00 and 7.00 p.m., you can enjoy a plate of Chicken Sate [6 sticks] and a glass of local wine for just Rp.85,000 Net. Although on any visit to Graze it is difficult to ignore the cakes and tarts on display inside from one of Bali’s best pastry chefs. Green Key is the latest in what seems to be a flood of ‘healthy cuisine’ restaurants to recently open in Ubud. Whilst it is almost imperative for a restaurant of any cuisine to have a good selection of tasty vegetarian dishes to survive in the Ubud area, very few pure vegetarian ones have done so. Green Key is at the Padang Tegal – Pengosekan border and does it different to most, it can be pure vegetarian or half and half!. Here you create your own dishes, either salads or ‘pokes’ [whatever they are supposed to be?]. The salads have 5 steps, each with separate cost that can be included or not; base [greens, noodles, rice, potato or for an extra payment, quinoa], toppings [assorted vegetables or premium ones as an extra], garnish [nuts, wonton skin, fried basil, etc], protein [pork, chicken, ham, bacon], and the dressing [honey mustard, sesame, etc.]. Rather confusing but the ‘pokes’ are much the same, just groups of the above plus a few more extras; Norwegian salmon, raw tuna, etc. C/R/I-24 May 17

35 I’ bought fresh fat prawns. In perusing our I’d re recipes for inspiration I found this one that we hadn’t used in years. Without much w thought I gave the recipe to Desak, feeling th sort of ho-hum about it because I was too so b busy to put much effort into recipe hunting. When she slid the dish onto the table and I W took the first bite my eyes opened wide, my to ta taste buds tickled and I was in heaven. “Enak sekali, Desak!” I exclaimed. You can make se the tamarind chili paste well ahead and keep th in the freezer. We use it in a number of dishes.

Rice Noodle Salad with Prawns and Tamarind Chili Sauce

Serves 3

Ingredients: - 1 package of mihun or 1/2 package of fresh rice noodles - 15 prawns, shelled and cleaned - 2 lemongrass stalks, thinly sliced and then finely chopped - 3 green onions, finely chopped - ½ tsp. fresh green chili, seeded and finely chopped - 1 cup fresh mint leaves, chopped - 6 -8 lettuce leaves, torn into large pieces - Some sprigs of coriander for garnish, use as much as you personally like - 1 Tbl. peanuts, toasted in a heavy skillet and then chopped Sauce: - 4 Tbl. lime juice - 1 Tbl. fish sauce - 2 Tbl. chili tamarind paste (see recipe below) - 3 shakes of Tabasco - 1 Tbl. palm sugar - salt to taste Chili Tamarind Paste: Makes about 1 cup - 1/2 cup dried shrimp - 1/4 cup + 2 Tbl. rice bran oil or canola - 1/3 cup sliced garlic - 1 cup sliced shallots - 8 fresh Lombok chilies, seeded and chopped - 3 Tbl. tamarind juice (make by mixing tamarind paste with water and squeezing out the seeds) - 3 Tbl. palm sugar - 1 Tbl. fish sauce Directions: Make the Chili Tamarind Paste first: Put the dried shrimp into a bowl and add room temperature water. Let the shrimps soak for about 5 minutes and then drain discarding the water. Heat 2 Tbl. of the oil in a wok or frying pan over medium heat. When it’s hot add the garlic and fry until it turns a golden brown. Remove the garlic retaining the oil in the pan and drain the garlic on a paper towel.

Add the shallots and fry them. When they are nicely browned add the cooked garlic to the pan along with the drained shrimps and stir fry for one minute. Add the chili and fry for 30 seconds. Remove the pan from the heat and put all the contents in to a blender or food processor and add 1/4 cup of the oil. Run the food processor until it is a fine paste. In a small pot mix the palm sugar, tamarind juice and the fish sauce and cook until the sugar is melted. Remove from the heat and stir in the mixture from the blender. This should be a paste now. Sauce for the Noodles: Mix in a blender the lime juice, fish sauce, chili tamarind paste, Tabasco, palm sugar and the salt. Run the blender until the sauce is well mixed. Taste for salt, Tabasco and lime and add more if you wish. Noodles: If you use mihun, soak them in hot water for 5 minutes. Drain in a strainer and tamp out as much water as you can. Cut the noodles into thirds. If you use the fresh rice noodles, drop them in simmering water for 1 1/2 minutes. Drain them in a colander or strainer tamping out as much water as possible. Cut the noodles into thirds. Simmer the prawns in water for 30 seconds or just until they turn pink. Drain these in a strainer and let cool about 30 minutes before you want to eat. Put the noodles, lemongrass, green onions, chili and the mint into a bowl. Toss these together well. Then add the sauce and toss again being sure to mix well. Add the cooked prawns and gently toss again. When you are ready to eat lay the lettuce leaves on the plate and top with the noodle mixture. Garnish with the coriander leaves and sprigs and sprinkle the peanuts over all. This is good at room temperature or warm but not hot. Note: You can prepare the chili tamarind paste and the noodle sauce well ahead of time or the day before.

Arabian Nights! Al Khaimah is an Arabian restaurant. When I think of Arabian food I first think of Arabian rice! I know that all the cuisines of Asia and the Middle East feature rice as a base BUT Arabian rice is ever so different. Soft and fluffy, a double process, cooked with those haunting Arabian spices [nutmeg, cloves, cardamom, etc], so aromatic. It is sometimes easy to forget the main ingredients of the dish and just keep eating the rice. The restaurant is pure Arabian, with a few Indian dishes added, though why they also have to feature the odd ‘western’ dish is beyond me. For this review I have ignored them, as most people would. Being a restaurant that caters to the Muslim majority the inside walls are lined with private curtained-off booths for privacy. The centre section is all lounge chairs and coffee tables, a weird management decision and one that is about to be changed to conventional tables and chairs after Idul Fitri. At the restaurant entrance there are two Sisha Lounges, each with separate air-conditioning. The menu contains many snack style finger food options. If just visiting the Sisha lounges at the front of the restaurant then they would be perfect. They also make great starters. One of the best is the Hawashi Egyptian, a round of pita bread, split and stuffed with spiced lamb, finely minced, then grilled. Served pre-cut in sectors similar to the way a pizza arrives. They are light and tasty, very easy to eat. Sambosas, similar to Indian Samosas, can be ordered stuffed with ether lamb or cheese and onion. Moroccan Bastilla are square pastries, very light and crisp, stuffed with a well spiced minced chicken mix. Then there are the simple Warag Enag, rice rolled in vine leaves, long thin cigar shapes, similar to the Greek Dolmades. Another Greek name beckons, Moussaka, but this one is very different; eggplant with chicken, lamb or livers. Shakshouka is a popular breakfast dish that is these days finding its way onto the menu of trendy cafes everywhere [even in Bali]. Eggs are scrambled in the pan whilst being mixed with sliced capsicum and diced tomato. Pure Arabian is the Foul Mudammas, broad beans cooked in olive oil with cumin and chopped spices. Most of the soups are cream ones, Mushroom Cream with chopped mushrooms added, Chicken Cream with sliced chicken and a Sweet Corn Cream. The exception is the

QUICK REVIEW excellent Red Lentil Soup, thick with lentils, so healthy. Although there are Arabian soups as well; Burmah Yaman is from the Yemen, a hearty lamb soup.

At your first look at this menu and you may think that is a bit over-priced. However when the large main courses arrive you understand that all dishes are meant for sharing, an Arabian feast! A good example of this is my favourite dish here, the Kabsah Chicken. Not a small piece of chicken breast, but a whole half chicken arrives totally covered with an enormous mound of that scented rice, just decorated with a scatter of raw onion rings. As with most of the dishes here no attempt has been made for any fancy presentation, it is in fact peasant food, and that is not an insult. After all, this cuisine has been done this way in the villages for centuries. The chicken has been cooked on the bone, but one slight touch and it falls away, so tender.

Kebabs, a variety of meat on a skewer, grilled over charcoal, are a feature of this cuisine. Lamb Kuftah is one of the best, well spiced minced lamb, sausage shaped. The Chicken Kebab is also minced not pieces of chicken as you may well expect, whereas the Shish Kebab is actual pieces of meat, lamb. Shawarma is recognisable by all. It can be ordered rolled in pita bread as sold at takeaways all around the world or on a plate, with many pieces of the sliced meat [chicken, lamb or mixed] alongside that Arabian rice. Kabsah Lamb is also available. The spiced rice is cooked with pieces of the meat, slowly to preserve the magic flavours. The Biryani and Madghout dishes use Indian spices, which are much stronger.

Charcoal Chicken is a strange title however it has not been blackened, merely grilled over charcoal after a prior marinade in lemon juice and spices. The Mixed Grill presents a variety of meat, it is an enormous meal for just one person; shish kebab, shish tawouk, lamb chop, grilled prawn, kuftah kebab and liver. It is served with pita bread, salad and the very non-Arabian French fries. Idam is Arabian style curry very different from the Indian ones also available here. Idam can be with either lamb or chicken. An Arabian Feast is to order a whole lamb, grilled on the spit over charcoal, supposedly enough for 20 persons. It is also possible to order just a half or even a quarter of a lamb. All are served with your choice of rice; mandhi [Yemen], kabsah [tomato based], kabli [Saudi], biryani or madghourt. Muhalabiya is an Arabian dessert. Milk pudding flavoured with rose water and orange zest. Alcohol is obviously banned here, being a 100% Halal restaurant but they do offer a wide variety of standard fruit juices, plus one very unusual one, Date Juice. Of interest also is the Yemeni style Adeni milk tea and the spiced aromatic Arabian Coffee, a pot thereof, served with dates on the side. Al Khaimah may not appeal to everyone but it is an experience well worth visiting, the soft flavours so different to the usual almost brutal intensity of some other Asian cuisines. A complete and pleasant change.

Local News Australian Man Stephen Richardson Strangled to Death in Bali Villa Australian man Stephen Richardson was strangled to death in his Sanur villa, with Bali police suspecting the killer was known to the 63-year-old. However Denpasar police chief Hadi Purnomo said the witness accounts were yet to lead police to a suspect over the former maritime worker’s mysterious death between dawn and midday on Sunday, May 7. No money or other items were stolen, which has led police to surmise that Mr. Richardson knew the perpetrator. “We don’t know if it is a female or male yet. For the time being we suspect just the one person,” Mr. Hadi said. “I suppose it was someone close, who the victim knew, if not [then] how did that person enter the room? “The reason I said someone close is because the victim’s belongings were all intact, nothing was missing - money, passport, electronics and the victim’s jewellery, including his watch, were all there.” Police were digging deeper to find out more information from female friends of Mr. Richardson, who had lived on and off in Bali for some time. “There’s plenty, apparently more than one [girlfriend]. Indonesian,” Mr. Hadi said. Mr. Richardson was found covered in blood on a mattress on Monday after his friend Garry Croker - concerned that he had not seen him for a couple of days - jumped the fence of his villa and discovered his body. Police say that the scene indicated the assault had started in the bedroom, led to the bathroom and ended up in the living room, where Mr. Richardson’s body was found. Mr. Richardson, who was known by his nickname ‘The Ape’, had wounds to his head and upper body and large amounts of blood was found throughout the villa. Mr. Hadi said an autopsy conducted on Thursday found signs of assault including stabbing and blunt force, but Mr. Richardson did not die from the head injury: “The cause of death was he was choked, it was because of asphyxiation, which meant he was unable to breathe and died.” [Sydney Morning Herald May 13, 2017]

Rising Water at Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan Threatening Iconic Pura Gubug The ebb and flow in the depth of Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan are part of a regular seasonal cycle, with high water levels on the lakes during the current year running at record highs. RadarBali.com reports that water levels on Danau Tamblingan over the past month are now sufficiently high to submerge most of the iconic temple site of Pura Gubug located at the edge of the lake. The Temple’s gardens – located 20 meters from the outer wall, are now under water with water heights at the front of the Temple now standing at 1.5 meters. Because of this, worshippers coming to pray at Pura Gubug are compelled to use small boats. Areas once used by overnight campers are now submerged below the waters. This is also the case with the fields once used for local games that have now disappeared below the waters that began to rise two months ago. Waters that were once 50-meters from the temple are now breaking against the temple’s walls. Similar flood-like conditions have occurred in the past, with even high water conditions recorded as recently as 2011 when homes surrounding the lake were also submerged. Meanwhile, caretakers at the temple are installing retaining walls around the base of the temple to prevent the waters intruding into the temple grounds. [www.balidiscovery.com May 7, 2017]

Australian Sara Connor’s Sentence Over Bali Police Officer’s Death Increased to Five Years The sentence of the Australian Sara Connor for the fatal assault of a Bali police officer has been increased to five years by Bali’s high court. Two months after Connor, 46, was sentenced to four years over the death of Wayan Sudarsa on Kuta beach in August 2016, three high court judges in Denpasar added a year to her sentence following an appeal by prosecutors. Connor, who is serving her prison sentence at Kerobokan prison, was not in court to hear the decision. Connor and a Briton, David Taylor, 34, have been held since their arrest over the night-time attack on the officer, whose bloodied body was found on the beach. Taylor was sentenced to six years over the fatal assault. In sentencing the pair in March, three judges in Denpasar found there was no intent to kill and thus did not hand down a murder sentence, but said the pair were guilty of “group violence”. Tourist, 50, is Attacked by a Komodo Dragon A tourist was attacked by a Komodo Dragon after he got too close while trying to take a photo. Loh Lee Aik, 50, was taken to hospital with leg injuries after being pounced on by the venomous lizard in Komodo National Park, Indonesia. The Singaporean came across a group of the animals feasting on pigs and goats from a nearby village and ‘excitedly’ took a picture, according to police. But he did not realise another Komodo was approaching and was badly bitten. Loh was touring the island during the Komodo’s mating season, running from May to August, when the lizards are more aggressive. He also did not have a guide, which is against official advice, and failed to report the incident to authorities. ‘Luckily it was a small komodo that bit him,’ said local police spokesman Jules Abraham Abast. ‘He was probably very excited taking pictures of the komodo, he didn’t realise another komodo was approaching him and then he was bitten.’ Mr. Loh was given first aid at the site before being taken by boat to nearby Flores island, where he was admitted to hospital and is now in a stable condition. Recent research has found that the dragons’ jaws have highly sophisticated venom glands that can cause paralysis, spasms and shock through haemorrhaging. The lizards are native to several Indonesian islands, and are considered a vulnerable species, with only a few thousand left in the world. They can grow up to 10 feet long and weigh up to 154 pounds. Sanur Traffic Brought to a Standstill by Anti-Reclamation Protests Thousands of demonstrators gathered at the Catus Pata Monument on the Bypass highway in Sanur, Bali on Sunday, May 7, 2016, to protest once again plans for a massive reclamation project in Benoa Bay under the banners of ForBALI and “Intaran Takes Action.” The Catus Pata intersection is located in the village of Intaran with the demonstration at the location causing widespread gridlock in the Sanur area of Bali. NusaBali said the group gathered on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 pm and commenced a long march down Jl. Danau Buyan and filling the Catus Pata Desa Adat intersection at Intaran. The crowds carried traditional Ogoh-ogoh statues and were accompanied by belaganjur marching orchestras as they brought traffic traveling from every direction to a standstill. The demonstrators said they were restating their opposition to the Benoa Bay reclamation project, restating the rejection of the mega-project by communities surrounding the harbor, and rejecting biased police interference in the ForBALI protest. The traditional head of the Intaran community, AA Kompyang Raka, proclaimed an association of 19 surrounding banjars united in their opposition to the reclamation of Benoa Bay. The Sanur protest gathering ended after two hours with a free concert featuring top local bands. [Channel NewsAsia May 8, 2017] Bali Boosting Infrastructure in Anticipation of October 2018 IMF – World Bank Meeting The State News Agency Antara reports that the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Darmin Nasution, has confirmed that the Government has allocated Rp. 1 trillion for preparations to allow Bali to act as host for a meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank to take place on the Island in October 2018. Darmin said: “The whole amount is perhaps around Rp. 1 trillion.” Darmin explained that the funds will be allocated in phases from the State Budget (APBN) and used to build infrastructure projects in the areas surrounding the World Bank and IMF conference. One of the infrastructure projects is a traffic underpass measuring 600 meters in length located at the entrance to Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport to be constructed to reduce traffic congestion at Bali’s sole air gateway and entrance to the toll road. The Government has also announced that the cost of accommodation for all delegates attending the World Bank-IMF Conference will be paid by the sponsoring international institutions, and not by the Indonesian Government. [www.balidiscovery.com May 6, 2017] Plans Underway to Allow Only Electronic Payment of Road Tolls Starting October 2017 The Jakarta Globe reports that the Government plans to allow only electronic forms of payment by users of the nation’s toll road system starting in October 2017. The move is intended to smoothen the flow of traffic by eliminating the slow manual payment of toll fees and receiving change. Agus Martowardoyo, the governor of Bank Indonesia, said, in describing the change: “To get there, standardization is needed and we want all banks to participate in issuing electronic cards to improve interconnection and interoperability.” Toll road revenues nationwide now stand at Rp. 12 trillion annually. But, only 23% of this amount is remitted by drivers using electronic payment cards. Current procedures in place for electronic payment of toll fees see toll operators paid only 180 days after they receive payment electronically from consumers. The Government is presently discussing measures with Bank Indonesia to shorten the payment period of electronic road tolls to road operators. Bank Indonesia is aiming for October 2017 as the deadline for payment of road tolls only by electronic cards with all banks required to make electronic payment cards available to the public. [www.balidiscovery.com May 6, 2017] Village in Bali is Fining People Rp 5 Million for Littering

A man has accidentally bought a dead frog into Queensland in his shoe when travelling to Cairns from Indonesia. The black-spined toad was detected in the man’s shoe by sniffer dogs at Cairns Airport. Head of Biosecurity for the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources Lyn O’Connell told Daily Mail Australia while the pathway of frogs and toads travelling in passenger’s shoes is not unheard of, the recent case stood out.

Fed up with rampant littering, a village in Bali has made a customary rule putting quite the hefty penalty on trash tossing: a Rp 5 million fine. If people are found carelessly throwing garbage in Samsam Village, Kerambitan, Tabanan, they must pay up-literally.

‘While the passenger was being screened by a Biosecurity Officer, one the shoes elicited a reaction from a detector dog,’ Ms O’Connell said. ‘The toad was recently dead and was likely alive when the passenger put the shoe on to return from Indonesia.’ The Department of Agriculture and Water Resources is reminding travellers to be biosecurity-aware and to check their luggage when packing for Australia. The black spined toad is related to the cane toad which, in Australia, has no natural predators.

The rule encourages villagers to keep each other in check since those who “find” litterers can apparently get rewarded with Rp 500k-though we’re honestly not sure how this doesn’t turn into a ‘he said, she said’ with that kind of money involved. “It doesn’t just apply to residents of Samsam Village. Anyone can get the reward if they find someone throwing garbage, which will incur a Rp 5 million fine,” Samsam Traditional Village head, I Dewa Nyoman Triasa told Tribun Bali on Wednesday.

The Department of Agriculture said the toad is potentially more damaging than the cane toad, and could become established in the cooler parts of Australia. Being a carnivore, the toad could cause significant damage to Australia’s natural environment, competing with native frogs and toads for food and habitats. The black-spined toad is also likely to carry exotic parasites or disease. This the third frog to be bought into Australia in recent months. A live banded bullfrog was recently found in a passenger’s shoe at Perth Airport and a another black-spined toad was discovered at Melbourne Airport, both making the trip over from Thailand. [Mail Online May 10, 2017]

Samsam Village secretary, Made Adi, says the town’s rubbish seemed an insurmountable problem before the village imposed the heavy penalty and there was a spot on the edge of town were people would often dump trash. “Before the customary rule, many people would through garbage there secretly, like it was a landfill,” Adi explained. Help, My Dog Has Eaten Rat Poison! Rats (and mice) are everywhere in Bali. Waste management deficiencies have led to an explosion in the rat population, which in turn brings diseases that can be transmitted to humans and dogs via rat urine such as Leptospirosis, and also draws snakes into residential areas.

seizures, increased excitability, stiff forelimbs, wobbliness, change in voice, weakness, paralysis, and death. Lower doses are reported to cause a paralytic syndrome that begins as a progressive depression and weakness resulting in general weakness and collapse. Some animals may recover gradually over weeks or months of supportive care, while others may have permanent damage.

Some people inevitably turn to rat poison to remove the rats from their homes, but unwittingly end up poisoning their pet if it either consumes some of the poison directly, or eats a rat/mouse that had previously ingested the poison. The latter becomes more likely when considering that a rat that eats rat poison, prior to dying, becomes slower and much easier for a dog/cat to catch. Of the animals coming to Sunset Vet, rat poison is up there in the top 5 most frequent poisonings.

Rat Poison Treatment Tips

What is Rat Poison? Rat poison is an ‘anticoagulant rodenticide’ similar to warfarin and works by competitively inhibiting an enzyme called Vitamin K epoxide reductase, which prevents the recycling of Vitamin K-1 and thus causes fatal bleeding. There are several different generation rat poisons, with the main difference between them being the duration of action in the body, which then dictates the length of the antidote treatment required. Clinical Signs If the animal is brought to a vet clinic soon after ingestion of the anticoagulant, the animal would appear clinically normal, as this type of poisoning has a delay in onset. Unfortunately, many animals are presented to the veterinarian several days after the ingestion of the rat poison. At this point, the animal may show severe clinical signs such as external bleeding, pale gums, weakness, and exercise intolerance. Bleeding into body cavities can result in unexpected clinical signs. For example, bleeding into the joints can result in swollen joints and lameness. Brain or spinal cord hemorrhage can result in severe neurological effects. Also, tracheal constriction from laryngeal bleeding or a hemothorax can result in breathing difficulty or coughing.

Diagnosis Diagnosis of anticoagulant poisoning is based on history of exposure, expected clinical signs, and laboratory confirmation of coagulopathy. At Sunset Vet we usually do a test called ‘buccal mucosal bleeding time’ – making a tiny cut on the dog’s inner lip and timing how long it takes for the bleeding to stop. This gives a useful guide as to whether a bleeding disorder is present, but does not tell you whether it is due to a lack of platelets, a vitamin K1 deficiency such as rat poison ingestion, or one of the myriad of clotting factor deficiencies. Post mortem analysis in an anticoagulant poisoning would reveal expected lesions associated with bleeding.

If you cannot get the animal to your nearest vet clinic within 30 minutes, you should induce vomiting at home. Making the animal vomit (‘emesis’) is most productive if performed within 2 to 3 hours of ingestion in dogs and cats and within 30 minutes to one hour in ferrets. Feeding a small moist meal before inducing vomiting may increase chances of a productive emesis. Three common products used to trigger vomiting are 3% hydrogen peroxide, coconut/vegetable oil or highly saturated saline solution. 3% hydrogen peroxide has been shown to be an effective emetic for both dogs and cats. The dosage is 2.25ml/kg, not to exceed 45ml. Hydrogen peroxide causes vomiting through mild gastric irritation. Vomiting usually occurs within minutes and may be repeated once if not initially successful. Coconut/ vegetable oil can be literally just poured down the dog’s throat from above (around 200ml is usually enough), taking care to allow pauses for the dog to breathe. If using salty water, dissolve as much salt as possible into a bowl of water and pour it down the dog’s throat. This usually triggers an instant retch. Once the animal has vomited, activated charcoal is a commonly used decontamination tool by many vets. It adsorbs a chemical or toxicant and facilitates its excretion via the faeces. Activated charcoal can be given orally with a large syringe or with a stomach tube. Activated charcoal can be given every 6 to 8 hours for 2 to 3 treatments at a dose of 1-3 g/kg. Aside from decontamination, the animal is immediately put on intravenous fluids, in cases of severe bleeding transfusions with whole blood or plasma may be necessary to replace clotting factors. During treatment, it is critical to keep the patient quiet and to avoid the use of a dog collar to restrain or lead the dog, as this activity may lead to laryngeal or tracheal bleeding and airway constriction. Vitamin K1 is carried by most vet clinics in Bali and is a life saving requirement for animals that have eaten rat poison. However, the duration of treatment highly depends on the type of poison used, as some can last for up to 30 days in the body. Vets will usually give Vitamin K1 by injection initially, with tablets to continue at home assuming the animal survives. Vitamin K-1 should be given at a dose of 3-5 mg/ kg/day orally. This dose may be divided twice or three times daily and should be given with a fatty meal to enhance absorption. Sunset Vet offers veterinary services via their Kuta (24hr) and Ubud (8am-7pm) clinics.
