Christmas 2015 in Bali

Although Indonesia is predominantly Muslim and Bali mostly Hindu, Christmas – a traditional Christian celebration is recognised and awarded the status of a national public holiday. This Christmas is extra special in Bali as the 25th December coincides with the full moon – for Hindus in Bali, the full moon is an important, special and celebrated occasion. A full moon on Christmas Day is a rare event – this year will mark the first in 38 years. So it promises to be an extraordinary time to be Bali with both Balinese and expats in celebratory and festive mood.

New Years Eve 2015

Bali’s Kuta and Legian beaches are the most popular destinations for New Year’s Eve celebrations, with thousands of people enjoying the party atmosphere by the sea. Like any other place, Bali welcomes in the New Year with spectacular firework displays, at the stroke of midnight, it feels like the entire island erupts with noise and the sky lights up with bursts of mesmerising luminosity. The noise alone begins much earlier with every other person and their dog blowing decorated cardboard trumpets till they are blue in the face. The trumpets are on sale everywhere.

Alternatively, all the trendy venues in Seminyak will be hosting “book in advance” parties so you’ll need to plan ahead if you don’t want to go with the flow. It is not unusual for most of the roads near the beaches and clubs to be closed off early in the afternoon so expect to do some walking about! Jimbaran Bay or Sanur are perhaps the best alternatives for those wanting to avoid too much revelry by the sea. It is less chaotic and the sound of the waves accompanied by the cool night breeze makes for a romantic ambience that is hard to find elsewhere. Ubud also hosts its own alternative celebrations in

true Ubud style – arty, spiritual and in tune with nature, less of the commercial pomp. Just remember, this is also the rainy season, so you may experience no rain at all or anything from a few passing showers to a violent, torrential, sub tropical down pour. It does, ahem, dampen things a wee bit but when in Rome...

Tumpek Landep Saturday 12th December 2015

Tumpek Landep is a holy day that is dedicated to the blessings of metal items, from heirloom kris daggers to various other metal objects such as modern machinery, automobiles and such; all towards their better use in daily life. On this day you’ll see cars and motorcycles decorated with intricate stitched-leaf ornaments called ‘sampian’ roaming the streets in Bali.

Mother’s Day in Indonesia

Tuesday 22nd December 2015

ORIGIN AND HISTORY OF MOTHER’S DAY IN INDONESIA. Mother’s Day in Indonesia plays a special role in Indonesian history, culture and society. In fact, Indonesian Mother’s Day is not just for mothers but for the entire women community. It is celebrated on December 22nd every year. This day owes its origin to the first “All Indonesian Women’s Congress” that was held on the same day in the year 1928. However, the idea of making it an official celebration was only realised in 1938 and finally in 1959, the day was officially declared “Mother’s Day” in Indonesia, signed by President Soekarno. Mother’s Day is ’Hari Ibu’ in the Indonesian language. It is customary to send gifts, flowers and greeting cards to mothers and women. Also, many seminars and meetings are organized on this day to celebrate women’s development in the modern world and women’s empowerment.

LOCAL NEWS & EVENTS

Villa Kitty - Tales from the Cat House Former classmates of America’s President Kennedy (JFK) were enraged at his plagiarizing the line ‘ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country’. I may really cause them to some heartburn when I write “ask not what Bali’s cats can do for you – it’s about time you did something for Bali’s cats!” We often hear people say, the cats on Bali seem ok. I say, spend a day with us at Villa Kitty and, sadly, your view will be changed. Tiny kittens arriving daily without their mothers, in various states of ill health, is just a start of how our day pans out. How I wish the cats of Bali were ok. They play such an important role on this island, an island, where rice is the staple diet. You’d think, by now, some smart person would have thought ‘cats’. In every article I read about the destruction rats cause, I’ve never yet read that it may be a good idea to have cats! One article was titled “An Island in Need of a Pied Piper - Waves of Rats Destroying Rice Harvest in at Least Three Regions of Bali”. It talked about poisoning the rats but that they just came back with a vengeance. I was asked, recently, if we could ‘rent out’ one of our (haha) big cats, who would live outside the writer’s house for, say, three months and get rid of their rats. Our Villa Kitty (much loved) cat would not be welcome inside because the writer was ‘allergic’. But, after the rats had left, the writer would send our (much loved) cat back. After I’d levered my jaw off the floor, I wrote back, “and after our cat’s departure, your rats would return”. Cats have a special place in my heart. I can’t explain why really. When I first arrived on Bali I found two tiny kittens in the gutter, not far from the Ubud Palace. Tango, my beautiful calico, is definitely of royal blood. A more regal cat you could not hope to meet. Yoko, I found in the gardens of Honeymoon Guesthouse in Ubud. They have very different characters but both have filled my life with love, not to mention they’ve kept my heart ticking along with their purring. Cats lower stress and blood pressure and help the healing of muscles, tendons and ligament injuries and that’s just the beginning of how wonderful they are. Adopt a cat today and see for yourself. Cool Cats! Cats are cool. Without CATS – rats rule. Villa Kitty is a rescue and adoption centre for Bali’s abandoned cats & kittens. Please support our work.

EDITORIAL Christmas Day coincides with the full moon this year for the first time in 38 years (see page 13). What does this mean? Well, for the Balinese Hindus, every full moon is a time to be celebrated and honoured with full ceremonial splendour meaning that for the first time in 38 years, bali at Christmas promises to be extra special, extra colourful and more extraordinary than usual. The Indonesian government recognises Christmas Day and affords it the status of a national public holiday though most Indonesians are Muslim.

It is worth reflecting this coming New Year what a wonderful, unique and tolerant place Indonesia and the people of Indonesia are, especially in light of the problems we expats hear about in Europe, Australia and the rest of the world concerning the troubles with religion and nationality. If you are

an expat or holiday maker here for the Christmas and New Year period, you are very lucky indeed and we at Bali Marketplace wish you all a very happy and prosperous 2016, however and wherever you bring in the New Year on this most exclusive of islands.

There are so many things to enjoy in Bali – with the first signs of the rainy season approaching, Bali Adventure Rafting offers ‘5 star’ service from the start to finish. The action starts when you launch into a 9.6 km river stretch, navigating through rapids set to a backdrop of wild unspoiled rainforest, towering gorges and magnificent rice paddy terraces – sounds exciting? Read more on page 15. Rick Pursell writes another thought provoking story – “My Big Mistake” on page 18 and you can check out what fate has in store for you with our monthly horoscope on page 19.

“Art as Perspective” seeks to reaffirm art as a path to deeper understanding. Through the artists’ exploration of their own perspective, we gain greater understanding of own and of the world around us. CLC-Bali is a two-story 800m2 industrial building located on 9 are of land in Kerobokan. Previously used for garment production, this place has now been transformed in to a learning center with a glass facade, high ceilings, wooden and steel beams, hardwood and polished concrete floors. There is: • A Public Library – over 2000 books and 3000 magazines in English, Bahasa and French. • A full-time classroom and curriculum for 12 to 15 years olds. • “O wonderland” – an early education play and ready space for younger children. • “Perspective” – a space dedicated to culture and art exhibitions. • Specially designed rooms to host culture and education conferences, seminars and events. see back page

BALI SPORTS FOUNDATION 2015 YEAR IN REVIEW by Rodney Holt Bali Sports Foundation (BSF) is nearing completion of their busiest and most memorable year in its short six year history. Currently with 15 sports programs offered to people living with disabilities offered from its sportshall in Kesiman that has been upgraded with new disabled toilet/shower, disabled ramp, artificial grassed sports ground and painting & resurfacing thanks to the generosity of Stephen Niven and his team at POLYTAN in Melbourne.

WORKSHOP BY WORLD WHEELCHAIR EXPRESS FOUNDATION’s STEVE ELLEFSON In May this year BSF was privileged to have a visit from Canadian Paralympian Steve Ellefson who has competed in 3 Paralympic Games. Steve introduced BSF athletes to road racing and generously donated two racing wheelchairs so our athletes could enjoy a new experience. Even though he was on holidays Steve and his partner generously gave up two Sundays to conduct workshops and training clinics using the speed cycles to ensure our athletes learnt correct techniques. BOCCIA CLASSIFICATION In February, BSF was privileged to have a visit from Mr. Kenneth Soh, National Singapore Boccia Coach and his counterpart Ms Ni Ni from Myanmar to assist us with classifying Bali athletes for Boccia.

Singapore Wheelchair Rugby

SCC SOCCER SIXES The year began with BSF sending a young team of boys from Seraya in Karangasem to participate in the 6th SCC Youth Soccer Sixes tournament in Singapore. The team, although overawed by the new experience of flying, did themselves and their coach proud and were very competitive against teams from around the SEA region. Staying with host families, when not competing, visited Singapore landmarks as an added experience. SWIM CARNIVAL Annually in March, BSF conduct a Swimming Carnival for children with disabilities, many who participate in BSF’s swimming program conducted around Bali. As always the event was conducted at Bali Island School in Sanur and saw nearly 100 children compete enthusiastically. This carnival is not always about winning but more about participation and supporting others with disabilities. GOALBALL March saw the introduction of the sport of Goalball – a sport specifically designed for the visually impaired. Thanks to the POLYTAN artificial grass sports field the children from Dria Raba Blind Institute in Denpasar were able to learn a new sport, practise against full sighted people (wearing blindfolds) and commence training for the BUTA Bali Blind Games to be held in June 2016. SPECIAL OLYMPICS WORKSHOP Always striving to find ways to support people with disabilities BSF hosted a workshop on Unified Coaching held by Special Olympics Asia (SO AP) also in March. Conducted by SO AP’s Velappan Devarajaan and Amran Srinegar the clinic focussed on basketball and included the enthusiastic participation of Ubud NGO Sjaki Tari Us, staff and clients, the participants were able to experience ‘hands on’ coaching. COALTRANS FRIENDLY GAMES Early June saw the annual Coaltrans Friendly Games take place at Bali Island School with athletes competing in Powerlifting, Blind Powerlifting, Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Rugby, Para-Shooting, Disabled Chess and Eskrima with Boccia, Blind Soccer and Goalball introduced for the first time as demonstration sports. All athletes competed with grace, humility and enthusiastic support for each other which was evident with smiles all around regardless of who won. BALI BEACH GAMES & BALI KUAT On the weekend of March 14/15 BSF held the 2nd Bali Beach Games at Sanur’s Mertasari Beach bringing together different sports encouraging participation and helping support Athletes with disabilities. Also on the same weekend BSF introduced the Bali Toughest – KUAT where participants navigated their way around 10 obstacles over land and in the water, running, climbing, crawling, swinging and swimming testing their fitness, endurance, mental capacity and stamina over approximately 10km for Adults and 5km for juniors. FIT FOR CHARITY PrimaFit – based in Kuta collaborated with sports and fitness enthusiasts at the “Fit for Charity” race held between April 10-12. Dozens of participants flocked to the PrimaFit store over the three-day period in order to earn kilometres on PrimaFit’s cardio machines. Each kilometre run by the participants earned Rp.25,000 from PrimaFit for the assistance of athletes with disabilities. In all, a total of 1,237 Kilometres were racked up by all resulting in Rp.30,925,000 being raised by participants with PrimaFit donation an additional Rp.19,075,000 giving BSF Rp,50,000,000 for athletes with disabilities.

BALI OCEAN SWIM The first Sunday in July always sees the Bali Ocean Swim held at Bali Garden Resort on Kuta Beach. It is the first event for BSF’s busiest month of the year and the premier fund raiser for our Swimming Programs for children with disabilities. This year we were lucky enough to have the Butcher’s Club in Seminyak sponsor the event where competitors came from around the world to compete over the three distances 1.2Km, 5Km and 10Km. For the first time, BSF saw the participation of vision impaired swimmers from Dria Raba Blind Institute compete in the 1.2Km swim. It was simply inspiring to see these athletes navigate the course successfully with the amazing support of the Balawista Lifeguards. This year saw the inception of two additional awards in honour of two supporters of the Bali Ocean Swim who tragically passed away during the previous year. The Seth Richardson was presented to the Indonesian Swimmer who displayed the best sportsmanship and the Barry Beardman trophy, presented by his widow and long-time BOS participant Sherri Beardman, was awarded to the Indonesian swimmer who shows the greatest dedication. As always the Balawista Nippers held their competition on the sand near Bali Gardens with presentation for the nippers being held prior to the BOS presentations. As with every year BSF made donations to the Balawista Nippers and the Balawista Lifeguards. Without the support of the Lifeguards BSF would not be able to hold the Bali Ocean Swim. WHEELCHAIR RUGBY 2015 was a huge year for BSF’s Wheelchair Rugby program and it’s athletes. After conducting wheelchair rugby demonstrations around Bali, in Jembrana, Karangasem and Buleleng selected participants were invited to a training camp at Bali Island School over the Chinese New Year Holidays. On April 24-26 the Indonesian Wheelchair Rugby Team attended the MWRF hosted 2015 SEA Wheelchair Rugby Workshop in Kuala Lumpur along with representatives from Malaysian, Thailand and Singapore. Our wheelchair rugby referees, Ni Wayan Sari and I Wayan Suardina successfully completed stage one wheelchair rugby refereeing for national competitions under IWRF international referee Mr Chong of Malaysia. As part of the Bali Paragames the Bali 4’s Wheelchair Rugby Tournament saw the Indonesian team gain valuable experience and greater understanding of the sport when the team from Disability Sports Australia took on a mentoring role. Unfortunately due to the interruption of the volcanic ash from Mt. Ruang teams from Thailand and Malaysia were unable to attend. However, both the Australians and the Indonesians gained much from the experience. In October BSF hosted the New Zealand Wheel Blacks in Singapore, who together with Indonesia and Malaysia played 3 Nation Cup. BALI PARAGAMES The 3rd Annual Bali Paragames was held over two weekends at the Bali Island School, Tohpati shooting range and Tirta Ayu pool. The para-games saw events in Boccia Blind Soccer, Goalball, Powerlifiting, Blind Powerlifiting and Swimming along with the Wheelchair Basketball and Wheelchair Rugby tournaments. Thanks must go to the volunteers from Tong Tiek in Singapore who regularly support our events, Australia and Bali, without whom this event could not take place. PARA-ATHLETE TRANSPORTER Thanks to the sponsorship of Hotel Kristal and RJH group, BSF now has its own vehicle to transport our para-athletes to and from training. The vehicle can seat 9 persons or 4 wheelchairs and 3 persons. BSF has also had a custom built ramp fitted for wheelchairs.

PARALYMPIC SAILING With the introduction of a sailing program for those with Disabilities under the excellent tutelage of Indonesian 5 time Olympic legend Oka Sulaksana and support from the Royal Bali Yacht Club, Bali athletes were selected to compete in the 2015 Singapore Pre ASEAN Paragames Regatta against 21 sailors from Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore. The Singapore Disabled Sports Council further supported BSF’s sailing program by donating four second-hand Hansa 2.3 skiffs to enable us to expand our program. ESKRIMA – DEAF/MUTE STICKFIGHTING Eskrima or Stickfighting, saw BSF in collaboration with CMAA conduct two tournaments in 2015. The major tournament – Bali International Stickfighting Challenge - in September saw competitors from Australia, UK, USA, Philippines, Singapore and Indonesia compete at the GOR stadium in Karangasem. Due to the high standard of the competition Indonesian fighters impressed those internationals in attendance and resulted in two Bali fighters, I Made Swidiarta and I Nyoman Satriawan as well as BSF ‘s senior black belt Rodney Holt being invited to compete in the Australian Championships in Bunbury in November. At the completion of the Bali International Stickfighting Competition Grand Master Ron Lew conducted a workshop at the Bali Sportshall. Everyone who attended was privileged to learn from such an amazing generous teacher. Much appreciation to you Master Lew. BLIND JUDO Introduced by Rodney Holt and with the support of Ibu Dayu from Dria Raba and Bali Police Judo Coach Pak Made in 2013 Bali judotekas were graded to yellow and blue belts in 2015. Additionally the group of 8 judotekas were selected to compete and the inaugural Indonesian Blind Judo competition in Bandung in October where each competitor came away with a medal. BALI TRIATHLON October 25 saw 3 BSF athletes compete in the Bali Triathlon team’s event for the first time. With the dedicated support of BSF staff and volunteers the athletes arrived onsite at 5am and competed against seasoned athletes over the course of the event. Using a racing wheelchair for the run leg and a hand cycle for bike leg our disabled athletes did BSF proud and where saluted and cheered by many able bodied athletes on the day. POWERLIFTING BSF Powerlifting team is a group of dedicated athletes who train regularly at the BSF Sportshall. After all their hard work and training BSF powerlifters competed at the National championships in Solo, Central Java on September 1, 2015. Under the experienced supervision and coaching of Dr I Ketut Wija, the BSF powerlifting team competed against the best Indonesian Powerlifters from around the archipelago. The team did themselves, Bali and BSF proud by taking home 6 Gold and 2 Silver. This event is seen as a guide to selection for the 2016 Paralympics in Rio, Brazil so hopefully if their training and performances continue to improve then many will be selected.

Brave New Dishes In Cuca Well aware of its solid reputation among foodies in the know, Cuca is ready to once again take the island by storm with a new series of dishes that will not leave anyone indifferent. Chef Kevin Cherkas, always loyal to his cause, continues to cheer on local produce by introducing his take on the Spanish classic Patatas Bravas. His surprising version comes with roasted nutty tempeh, slowly dried vine ripened tomatoes blended to a rich tomato pulp and smoked cheese flakes. And where else could you find a risotto with no rice? Cuca’s new Squid “Risotto” is literally all about fresh meaty squid cleverly hand cut and delicately poached in its own ink. The dessert front is no less bold: a traditional tiramisu becomes in Cuca’s territory a courageous Tea-ramisu by substituting black tea for coffee and cocoa for white chocolate among other secret weapons. These among other spellbinding additions will shine along the already classic Crispy Fried Chicken, BBQ Octopus or Bali Breakfast and will surely contribute to keep everyone talking. Opened in Jimbaran, Bali, in July 2013, Cuca serves its signature cuisine made only from the best and freshest local ingredients thoughtfully curated from artisanal producers in Indonesia. A casual dining destination serving tapas, cocktails and desserts, the restaurant offers three distinctive spaces: an interactive and exciting Food Bar where foodies can sit down at the 8-meter-long teak counter and enjoy the show; a relaxed and intimate Dining Room, ideal for guests to enjoy the company of each other in a comfortable and air- conditioned environment and a chilled out Cocktail Bar & Garden Lounge, gently touched by the ocean breeze and surrounded by the undisturbed beauty of towering coconut trees. With nothing more than sheer passion and a resume jam-packed with extensive turns at some of the world’s best eateries including three star restaurants Arzak, La Broche and El Bulli in Spain and Daniel Boulud in NYC, Kevin Cherkas and Virginia Entizne, the souls of Cuca, took the island by surprise when they boldly broke into the restaurant scene to offer a radically different casual dining experience. Now well into its second year, the restaurant has succeeded in establishing itself as one of Asia’s favourite delicious destinations.

INDONESIAN INGREDIENTS: KECAP MANIS By Virgina Entizne of Cuca Restaurant

The name Kecap comes from the Amoy language koechiap or tsiap, which became in modern Cantonese dialect gwaijap, meaning “the brine of pickled fish”. On the other hand, Manis is the Indonesian word for “sweet”. The combination of both, Kecap Manis is a variety of soy sauce, a cooking condiment made from a fermented paste of boiled soybeans. The fermentation process, originated in China in the 2nd century BCE and spread throughout Asia, makes the content of soybeans nutrients easier to digest and thus more useful for the human body. While the basic soy sauce has a distinct taste of umami and a watery consistency, kecap manis is sweeter (as it is made with palm sugar), dark in color and has a thick consistency resembling maple syrup. Allegedly, it was originally made by the

Chinese to satisfy the taste of Javanese people, who prefer sweet nuances in their cuisine.

TRY THIS RECIPE! TASTY BBQ CHICKEN

A study by the National University of Singapore showed that Chinese dark soy sauce contains 10 times the antioxidants of red wine, and can help prevent cardiovascular diseases. Soy sauce is also rich in lactic acid bacteria and of excellent anti-allergic potential.

1. Place a few cloves of garlic, a chunk of ginger & a few chilies in a blender.

In Indonesia, especially in Java, kecap manis is really popular and has been used to add flavor to dishes such as nasi goreng, mie goreng, satay, tongseng and semur. Sambal kecap for example is a type of sambal dipping sauce with sliced chili, tomato and shallot, a popular dipping sauce for sate kambing (goat meat satay) and ikan bakar (grilled fish/seafood).

5. BBQ the marinated thighs on medhigh heat until chicken begins to color.

2. Add a good pinch of salt, a few sprigs of parsley and a splash of oil. 3. Blend until medium fine puree consistency. 4. Add just enough marinade to lightly coat some chicken thighs and let sit in chiller overnight to suck up the flavor.

6. Flip chicken and brush a good layer of Kecap Manis. 7. Repeat the process of coloring the chicken on both sides and brushing when it becomes dry. 8. Garnish chicken with a few toasted white sesame seeds, chopped cilantro and chunks of lime to be squeezed over. FIRST CHRISTMAS FULL MOON IN 38 YEARS INSPIRES EXTRAORDINARY FESTIVE CELEBRATION AT FOUR SEASONS RESORTS A full moon on Christmas Day does not occur often – this year will be the first in 38 years – and Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan is preparing for an extraordinary celebration with Full Moon Christmas Yoga in a dramatically beautiful location, on its new river-edge yoga deck. Perched on the banks of the Ayung River, the resort’s new Dharma Shanti River Terrace provides a breathtaking open-air venue for a very different kind of Christmas celebration, with yoga salutations and meditation under the glow of the full moon and twinkling stars. “Every full moon or ‘purnama’ is a special day in Bali, and this year it just happens to coincide with December 25th, which is a special celebration for many of our guests from around the world,” said Uday Rao, General Manager of Four Seasons Resorts Bali. “We’ve all seen pictures of Santa and his reindeers flying past a bright full moon, and this year we will be keeping an eye out while doing Moon Salutations on the yoga deck!” The last Christmas Day full moon was in 1977 and the next one is due in 2034, according to Dan Joyce, astronomer at Triton College’s Cernan Space Centre. The Full Moon Christmas Yoga is part of a comprehensive festive events program at Four Seasons Resorts Bali, encompassing the riverside retreat of Four Seasons Sayan, and the all-villa beach escape of Four Seasons Jimbaran Bay. Other highlights of Four Seasons Sayan’s festive program include Santa’s arrival by river raft, New Year’s Eve meditation, ‘flying’ AntiGravity Yoga, riverstone bathing rituals and sumptuous dining. Meanwhile Four Seasons Jimbaran’s festive program includes Surfing with Santa as part of the resort’s new TropicSurf program. After hearing Christmas wish lists, Santa will don a pair of boardshorts and join the TropicSurf coach to take young guests surfing at the gentle beach break of Jimbaran Bay. Children will also be invited to join a ‘dokar’ horse-and-cart ride with Santa around the resort gardens. To get families bonding and relaxing together this festive season, the resort will run a Festive Amazing Race challenge, while The Healing Village Spa is offering Family Yoga. Guests looking for unique gift ideas can join a Chakra Blending Class to make their own ila Himalayan salt scrub and massage oil, as a gift for someone special or a memento of Christmas in Bali.

NEW YEAR’S CELEBRATION AT SUNDARA The last night of 2015 will be unforgettable at Four Seasons Jimbaran Bay’s sophisticated beach-club and restaurant, Sundara, located just steps above the sparkling surf. With a New Year’s Eve beach-front dinner and delightful new Customized Cocktails by DRY Martini, Sundara will host a stylish Countdown Party to ring in 2016

BODY & SOUL

MY BIG “MISTAKE” by Rick Pursell

Actually, right off the bat, I have to say don’t believe in “mistakes”, but I do believe in choices. While the great wheel of life is turning and we singularly and collectively are the metaphoric spokes, we don’t really know where this wheel is going to end up. We can postulate an end point, but in an ever-expanding and infinite universe, is there really an ending? We can look back in hindsight and see where this great wheel has traversed, we can see the tracks and imprint of the past and occasionally, if we are still and intuitive, we can get a glimpse of the future. Some are more adept at this than others, but we all have this capacity within us.

us in that moment, they are the perfect response in that moment, for our continuing journey along our chosen Path. A few moments later, a week, a month or a lifetime may pass and we decide that we will not make that choice again. We grow from the choices we make and the solutions I have found to be most successful are:

in. If we consciously choose to cause harm to ourselves, to others, assets - whether our own or belonging to others, the immediate environment in which we live, work or play, the Planet as a whole and to future generations, then we must also be prepared to face and take full responsibility for the consequences of our choices and decisions.

• Choices made from the heart are infinitely better and healthier for ourselves and all species (Us and We). Choices from the ego-mind serve only ourselves (I, Me, Mine), at the exclusion of all others = more separateness. • Repeatedly choosing the same ego-minded, destructive choices, will eventually lead us to change our choices. With this I am reminded of Albert Einstein’s sage saying – “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

So the wheel is turning and we have been gifted with the ability to make choices. Situations, challenges, growth opportunities arise and we choose which ones and how we want to deal with them. There are no “good” or “bad” choices, for that is to judge them. Instead we choose and our choices serve

The so-called “bad” choices serve us, just as well as the “good” choices. They are part of our conscious evolution, aiding the shift from our heads to our hearts. Without judgement, the “bad” choices are just choices, not mistakes, errors, failures or any other negative labels. Likewise with the “good” choices, they are not good, excellent, superior, outstanding or exceptional, they are just choices. Does this pave the way for us to think, say or do anything we like, with no responsibility or accountability? This is where consciousness comes

Ironical isn’t it? If we are making unconscious choices that result in harm, then we must become aware of the effects our choices are having upon people and the planet, because they are patently obvious and observable.

Through much of my life I have tried so hard to correct that which appeared as unwanted in my life, whether it was of my own making or that of others. I have despaired over the condition of our human family, the destruction of our rain forests, oceans, lands, inequalities and general wellbeing, all the time wanting and yearning for something different. In other words, resisting what is unfolding in our world, resisting the crisis within and without, objecting to behaviours –

“ Dates in 2016 for the The Heart Mastery Series and Experiencing Your Authentic Self retreats are yet to be confirmed. Please visit our website - http://www.spirituality-bali.com for more information.”

“Love is a mirror – It reflects only your essence, if you have the courage to look in its face” - Rumi BALI MARKETPLACE

So there you have it, My Big “Mistake” was to choose to try and manipulate what is a natural phenomena that is leading us to a better, more peaceful and harmonious world. It was a ”good” lesson!!

What then is “My Big “Mistake”?

UPCOMING EVENTS

“The truth is that our finest moments are most likely to occur when we are feeling deeply uncomfortable, unhappy, or unfulfilled.” “For it is only in such moments, propelled by our discomfort, that we are likely to step out of our ruts and start searching for different ways or truer answers.” - M. Scott Peck

Our outer world is reflection of our inner world. My epiphany was that by observing Nature, pendulums, the yin yang symbol and a multitude of other signs, both sides balance out and are absolutely necessary in life. We cannot try to manipulate one side, be it the “good” or “bad” side because we don’t want it in our lives, because it causes us discomfort, because we want to live only in the peaceful, harmonious and “good” side. This defies all the laws of nature and causes us undue imbalance, stress and suffering. When we offer no resistance, when we truly surrender and let go our intended manipulation of either side of the duality, a foreboding peace and harmony descends upon us, the very peace and harmony we sought by trying to create a desired outcome in the first place.

Clearly there is a pattern emerging here. From my own experience, I have found that no matter what choices we make, whether they are labeled “good” or “bad”, eventually we will grow our awareness and make more conscious, responsible choices.

mine and others and a whole gamut of life conditions that are arising, especially in these dramatic times of change.

DECEMBER 2015 Issue #29

19 Aries Unexpected expenses and some stress in your relations could lead you to breaking point. Invest your energy in sports and take some time to think about your future. It is worth thinking over your expectations for next year and build an action plan. You will soon realize that it is not wasted time.

Cancer Nothing will resist your positive energy and with the long lasting help of JUPITER and SATURN staying in friendly signs, you will be able to jump over mountains. Do not forget to plan a few days of rest, you will need them. Christmas with your family will be a positive time for you.

Libra Everyone is counting on you for everything but you are starting to feel that it is all too much. Teach them how to cook boiled eggs and listen to your body: go for a walk or to the swimming-pool. Life will go on as usual but you will feel more relaxed, happier and the people around you will appreciate this new state of mind.

Capricorn The position of Jupiter in a friendly sign should help you to find the usual burdens on your shoulders lighter and give you a better sense of humour. Venus will facilitate your contacts and your sentimental life. Do not miss these excellent opportunities to enjoy life and to have – at last – the feeling that it can be rather pleasant.

1 - 31 DECEMBER 2015 Taurus You feel a little nervous, as you are being aroused by VENUS, staying in a friendly sign. A beautiful encounter could happen, in which your natural sensuality will match deep feelings. Accept invitations, socialize but do not eat or drink too much! And banish the word “Diet” from your vocabulary! It will make you feel depressed.

Gemini Always clever and full of creativity, with a positive and constructive energy which helps you to succeed in unusual fields of life. But you love taking up challenges, they lead you to bring out the best in yourself. You should use your communication skills at home too and listen to what your family has to tell you.

Leo Not an easy month for you. Your family needs you and you have to face your responsibilities, even if you find everyday life boring. You will have difficult challenges to meet bravely in your professional life, especially on the 17th. The best days will be between the 8th and the 12th. Take these opportunities to make the important decisions.

Virgo JUPITER lingers in your sign for the next few months. This planet of success and expansion should help you to get out of your shell and consider life with a renewed confidence. Stand up for your opinions, be a little selfish and take care of youself, of your appearance.

Scorpio A nice month for interesting encounters, you will have confidence to establish contacts with the others and increased vitality. Your usual sarcastic and caustic sense of humour is forgotten for a while. Take advantage of this month to meet friends you have not seen for a while and show them that you can be excellent company.

Sagittarius Mars and Uranus will give you a deep desire for action, with increased activity and creativity. Try and invest this energy in your business, or in sports but do not go too far, you may risk a burnout. New relationships in sight but keep cool, and do not trust everyone at first sight, even if you sometimes want to escape from family life.

Aquarius Your deep desire to do things by yourself, without any control, could lead you to face starting your own business. The global pressure from your family environment will not stop you building your business plan, making appointments here and there to explain your ideas. Your creativity is now at its best.

Pisces Bad organization at the beginning of the month. Temper your enthusiasm or else you are heading for difficulties, especially in your job. Things will come back to normal around the middle of the month, just in time to start preparing your Xmas and the New Year’s Eve celebrations. As usual, you can count on your family’s help. It will be perfect!

You have something to SELL? You are looking to BUY something? NO NEED TO COUNT HOW MANY WORDS YOU WRITE! DECEMBER 2015 Issue #29

Love will often be governed by a sense of reality, the respect of conventions and once they have found the right partner, their engagement is made for a life. by Anne-Marie Comoretto
