TOURIST ADVICE

ARE W

MONEY

Changing cash for Indonesian Rupiah will give you the best exchange rate. Withdrawing cash with your debit or credit card often will yield a less favourable rate plus a withdrawal charge on top. Beware of unscrupulous money exchangers offering, what appears a wonderful exchange rate. At best, there will be an undisclosed charge (always ask before handing over your money) or you may find yourself the victim of magical slight of hand. Ask at your hotel or a trusted expat where to go.

CEREMONIES

There are ceremonies happening every month all over Bali. Roads in tourist areas such as Kuta can often be closed to allow ceremonial processions. Enjoy the visually exciting and colouful events and treat them with the upmost respect. Observers are cheerfully welcomed by the Balinese but they will not tolerate undue interference or disrespect. Try to learn some phrases in Bahasa while you are here, the words for thank you and simple phrases that will help you buy in shops and order in restaurants.

DRIVING

Motorcycle riders and their passengers must wear a correctly fastened and approved helmets. Fines may be imposed for non-compliance. In the event of an accident, foreigners may be assumed to be at fault and expected to make financial restitution to all other parties. You must also be in the possession of an international driving license. Failure to produce one if you are stopped by the police will result in an on the spot penalty fine or an appearance at court. The roads can be dangerous, be vigilant.

AWARENESS

A word of caution to all. The law in Bali is unequivocal when it comes to the use of or possession of illegal drugs - YOU are in big trouble so DO NOT do it. Your embassy or consulate will not offer you much in the way of assistance if you are caught smuggling drugs into Bali, caught with drugs in your possession whilst here in or appear to be under the influence (they can and will blood test you). You will find yourself in prison and you can be prosecuted for the death sentence if the intent is considered to supply.

LOCAL NEWS & EVENTS

EDITORIAL The 2015 Balinale festival will once again be held at the CINEMAXX Theatre located at the popular Lippo Mall in Kuta. This year’s theme is ‘Face of Diversity’ and will feature 100 films that entertain and inspire from 26 countries (see opposite page).

Why golf? Why in heavens name, take up golf? Par 5 Club is all about affordable golf and lots of fun for amateur golfers of all levels, irrespective of age, nationality, gender or creed and is definitely a reason for “taking up golf” – see page 09. Jonathan Matthews tells about his experience at a small but trendy new Burger Bar in town “Bandits Den”, which also delivers a tasty selection of burgers straight to your door. Staying with the theme of food delivered, if you love pies – “Gimme Pies” has a next day delivery service which is, well, so “Yummy” (see page 15 for both businesses).

Virginia Entizne of Cuca Restaurant writes about an Indonesian ingredient “Kemangi” or “Lemon Basil” on page 14, together with a suggested recipe.

There are so many things to enjoy in Bali: the culture, beaches, restaurants, bars and clubs. On pages 16 and 17 you can find information on where to watch live TV sports, play pool, dance to live music and where best to go to enjoy Bali’s famous sunsets. There is also an ever increasing array of specialist activities. Turn to pages 18 and 19 to read about just four of them: White Water Rafting, Elephant Rides, Wakeboarding and if you enjoy cycling or motor biking, the “Archipelago Adventure” tours.

Rick Pursell writes another thought provoking story – “Judgment or Gratitude” on page 22 and you can check out what fate has in store for you with our monthly horoscope on page 23.

bali 4s review: Through the eyes of 4 University of Western Sydney Occupational Therapy Students

by Clare Comino, Kimberly Brown, Danielle Guy & Danica McKay As part of our Occupational Therapy programme at the University of Western Sydney, we were presented with an exciting opportunity to come to Bali and work with the amazing staff and athletes at the Bali Sports Foundation (BSF) for 8 weeks. The focus of occupational therapy is to enable individuals to participate and engage in activities that provide meaning and purpose in their lives. Within the occupational therapy framework, leisure and play are key components yet they are often overlooked. Engagement in leisure provides opportunities for social interaction, pursuing interests and hobbies that contributes to an individual’s identity and sense of wellbeing. Over the four days of observing and being a part of the Bali 4s tournament gave an insight into how sport plays an instrumental role to these individuals who experience disability. With some teams pulling out last minute due to the foreboding presence of the ash cloud, it ended up just the Australian and Indonesian teams competing. Whilst this was initially disappointing, it turned out to be an opportunity for the Indonesian team to develop skills, implement strategies and most importantly increase their confidence. The Australian team were understanding of the conditions that the Indonesian team experience such as the limitation of available equipment, the varying range of disabilities of the athletes and their functional capacity. From an occupational therapy perspective, the most apparent difference between the Australian team and Indonesian team were the wheelchairs used during the game. In terms of function the customised chairs used by the Australians put them at an advantaged as they were more appropriate for the games dynamic and the players individual needs. This emphasises the need for future seating and positioning assessments of players which can be provided by an occupational therapist and will benefit players and their performance on the field. We had the pleasure of working alongside Keese, an international classifier for wheelchair rugby, who allowed us to participate in the functional assessments of the players from the Indonesian team. This enabled us to gain a greater understanding of the classification process and individual players functional abilities. It provided further insight into how their functional abilities affected their on court performance as well as allowing us to observe where occupational therapy can assist in improving their performance.

Getting to the game was a feat in itself for both teams. Firstly, ensuring that there were enough vehicles to accommodate the players and their wheelchairs posed its own challenges. Access to an appropriate means of transport was also a concern. Transport to and from the court required the use of multiple vehicles including bali’s only accessible bus which had insufficient capacity thus, multiple trips and BSF staff and vehicles were required in the transportation process. Furthermore, transfers in and out of the vehicles appeared unsafe for both players and staff and became a timely process. The atmosphere over the four days both on and off the court by supporters, players and volunteers was positively overwhelming. The determination and the effort of the Indonesian team didn’t falter for the duration of the games, it only seemed to increase and this was reflected in the players body language. All the smiling faces, laughter and good sportsmanship from both sides made it an absolute delight to be a part of. As reported by one member of the Australian team, the language barrier was not a concern as there was a common language between all players; the love and passion for the sport. The Australians were wonderful mentors going above and beyond to accommodate the absence of the other teams through facilitating impromptu workshops to teach and further develop the skills of the Indonesian team. Upon speaking to one of the Australian team members he summed up the experience perfectly stating that it was one of the most thrilling and exhilarating experiences he has been part of and the smiles on everyone’s faces will stay with him. From our perspective it was a great introduction into wheelchair rugby and we thoroughly enjoyed this experience and cannot wait to work with the athletes and BSF to offer sustainable strategies which will continue to improve their performance.

09 GIVE GOLF A GO with Par 5 Club

COMMUNITY

WHY GOLF? WHY, IN HEAVEN’S NAME, TAKE UP GOLF?

There’s a challenge inherent to golf, that otherwise is unattainable for most of us, ordinary folk. You go to any golf course on the planet and if you’ve never played the game, the first emotion that overwhelms you is: “I don’t belong here”, followed immediately by: “I can’t afford this”. Why would you want to be seen wearing all that ridiculous clownesque attire anyway? What’s the point in robbing cows all over the world from all these green pastures? Surely this MUST be something for rich people only, working class folk would NEVER stand for this… But you cave in, because the buddy that took you there really is alright in spite of the way he’s dressed. What’s more he’s lending you his spare set of sticks, which he calls clubs, so why the heck not. You give it a go and you give it a whack. And you’re sold. Right then and there it is decided. Immediately you know for a fact that if you could just have another go, your next shot will be a lot better than that first one. And that’s your first of many Mulligans to follow.

A colourful bunch

Sweetly smiling caddy

New golfer, a shot on the fairway, you’re a champ. Your first hole in single digits, you’re a champ! Your first round in under 4 hours and without hitting a fellow golfer in the head, the survivors buy you a beer. Next you stumble into a Par for a hole, before you know it a Birdie falls into your lap. And still you’re not done. There’s always more, even if no one wants to play with you anymore, you still have to beat the ball, you have to beat the course, you have to beat yourself. Expensive proposition? Yes, it can be, but only relatively so. Is it worth it? Well come and find out… Par 5 Club is all about affordable golf and lots of fun for amateur golfers of all levels, irrespective of age, nationality, gender or creed. We love organizing small-scale

competitions, multi-day tournaments and away trips, but we welcome the pure leisure golfer as well. FOOD & DINING

INDONESIAN INGREDIENTS: KEMANGI OR LEMON BASIL By Virgina Entizne of Cuca Restaurant

A herb grown primarily in southern Asia and northeastern Africa (where it is believed to have originated), lemon basil falls into the scented basil category. Lemon basil stems can grow to 20–40cm tall. The plant’s narrow, ovate, bright green leaves reach two inches long, producing lemon-scented white flowers and seeds. Its fragrance is distinctly of lemon and lime with a lot of sweetness in the background. Once it’s chilled for a day or two the lemon aroma starts fading away. Fresh Basil has anti-aging, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. The herb contains exceptionally high levels of beta-carotene and vitamin A, and is rich in zea-xanthin an anti-oxidant that helps protect age-related macular disease. It has a good amount of Iron and also helps

to detoxify the liver. It contains phytochemicals that may lower cortisol, a hormone secreted when you’re stressed that causes weight gain, so try adding some fresh basil to you water or tea. Lemon basil is a herb found commonly within Thai, Laotian and several Middle Eastern region cuisines. It is the only basil used often in Indonesian food, where it is called “kemangi”. Here it is often eaten raw with salad or lalap (raw vegetables), accompanied by sambal or used to season certain Indonesian dishes such as curries, soup, stew and steamed or grilled fish. Being extremely delicate, lemon basil should be used fresh and added during the last moments of cooking. Over cooking basil is not recommended as heat quickly dissipates the flavour.

TRY THIS RECIPE! BALI PESTO 1. Grate cheese and pick leaves off the basil stems. 2. Measure and add to a food processor or blender along with nuts, coconut oil, garlic, lemon juice and salt. 3. Puree until smooth. 4. Store in chiller until needed and add it to your favourite pasta, use it as a marinade for chicken or fish, or as salad dressing.

FOOD & DINING 13 BANDITS DEN: TASTE BUD BLISS FOR BURGER BANDITS by Tina Broughton UPCOMING foodie destination Batu Belig has added a funky new burger bar to its growing list of gourmet offerings. The small but ever-so hip ‘Bandits Den’ caters to night owls and homebodies with their delicious selection of burgers available for dine in, takeaway and home delivery until 2am every day.

review

This new kid on the block is quickly gaining a loyal band of followers who can’t get enough of this restaurant’s great value prices and total commitment to serving Bali’s tastiest burgers.

Burgers are simple but the trick is to make sure all the ingredients required are prepared and used perfectly, there is no room for error. I popped along with a friend to see if the hype was true – “Bali’s Tastiest Burgers”? We shared the “Outlaw Burger” and the “Billy the Chick Burger” (chicken parmigiana). Uncomplicatedly yet attractively presented (as you can see from the picture), you also get real homemade chips – the polar opposite to “Rotten Ronnies” (or McDonalds as it is sometimes referred to) with their sad and soggy burgers and fake French fries. Verdict? Deicious!

Their popular signature ‘Outlaw Burger’ comes with all the trimmings you could want in a burger - a lean and juicy premium beef patty, lettuce, tomato, pickles, cheese, bacon, egg, caramelised onions, authentic tomato relish and aioli, in a fresh brioche bun - and a side of hand cut fries for the very reasonable price of IDR 70K. The recently added Guinness-marinated steak burger is also proving to be a hit, with a super tender slab of sirloin steak dressed with tangy mayo, mustard, baby romaine lettuce, tomato and caramelised onion, in a super soft but lightly toasted brioche bun.

by Jonathan Matthews To misquote from the Charles Bukowski poem “Style” – “To do a simple thing with style is preferable to doing a complicated thing without it”.

Billy the Chick Burger If you’re not in the mood for burgers try the amazing “Caesar Salad” with homemade dressing; and for the kids the homemade chicken strips are unbeatable for taste and value. When you’re done eating or if you just want to cool down on yet another hot day in paradise, why not try one of their juices, smoothies or an ice-cold Bintang at supermarket prices? If you’re in the Batu Belig area make sure you call in to Bandits Den and treat yourself to one of Bali’s tastiest burgers.

THE ISLAND WAKE FEST by Joannes Rhino

Bali Wake Park (BWP) is Bali’s latest top destination for fans of active vacations, especially for people who love water sports. It was opened in April 2015 with a grand attraction: the “Island Wake Fest 2015”, which was the first Wakeboarding Competition in the country. Wakeboarding is a surface water sport which involves riding a wakeboard (similar to a surfboard or skateboard) over the surface of a body of water, towed by a boat or a cable system. BWP manages to blend an active vacation with relaxation by using a state-of-the-art cable system, erected around a beautiful lake, spanning across 5 hectares of stunning scenery. This modern cable system can comfortably tow up to 8 people at any one time. The system is constructed in such way that the speed can be controlled by the individual using it, enabling a variety of experiences for both youths and adults. The entire structure is carefully arranged to offer challenges depending on experience and confidence: there are deliberately placed obstacles in the water, so you can go for a smooth ride, or for an adventure-packed wakeboard run! If you fall off the carrier before the end of your ride, a buggy service will come

september 2015 Issue #26

to pick you up, as every cable user is monitored with safety as a priority. Within the park there is also a “2 tower system” that allows beginners to take their first steps in wakeboarding – with professional help and support from expert instructors. If you don’t need an instructor’s help, you can further test your wakeboarding skills on a dual level pool. There you will find several different obstacles that will make your ride even more interesting! BWP is the first and only wake park in Bali, which will definitely contribute to what Bali has to offer its tourists. Tourists these days expect more from their vacations: they don’t want to just lie on the beach or by the swimming pool sipping cocktails; they are into sightseeing, festivals, sporting activities and competitions. Active holidays enable tourists to capture unforgettable memories to share with friends and family when they return home, and Bali Wake Park is such a destination – one that offers an active and fun packed holiday experience. BODY & SOUL

Judgment or Gratitude? by Rick Pursell

HAVE YOU EVER FOUND YOURSELF JUDGING OTHER PEOPLE FOR THE WAY THEY LOOK, WHAT THEY SAY OR HOW THEY BEHAVE? - HAVE YOU EVER JUDGED YOURSELF UNFAIRLY? - HOW ABOUT JUDGING A PLACE OR SITUATION AS BEING UNPLEASANT? I think if we are honest with ourselves, and living in integrity means exactly that, we could most probably answer yes to all of the above questions. So where does this judgment come from? The answer of course is the ego mind, that source of separateness and fear, which says, “I am better or more superior to you” or

“My way of life is the right way and yours is wrong” or “I am afraid to take any risks”. The ego mind lives in fear and has to justify itself by making us right and others wrong, so being judgmental is a perfect solution for the mind. But, is it good for us and others – NO! Does it bring about peace and harmony – NO! Does it make us and others happy – NO again! The list is endless and I am sure you get the picture. So what is the solution? Do we get rid of the ego mind? Do we keep quiet for fear of harming others or ourselves - I don’t think so, because that is just more fear arising from the ego.

If you could turn your judgment around into a feeling of connectedness to that which your ego mind felt separated from, and in about 10 to 15 seconds feel so much better, would you be willing to give it a try? Yes!!! So here it is and you will be astounded by its simplicity. Whenever you catch yourself thinking or saying something in judgment of yourself, others, a place or situation, look for something that you can be grateful for. It’s that easy.

Gratitude is life

For instance, you may be thinking to yourself, “I never have enough money to buy something nice for myself, I am a failure at providing myself with enough income”. Now turn that around and show gratitude by acknowledging to yourself, “Well I have food in my belly, a roof over my head, clothes to wear and actually, a regular income”. Now be aware of how you feel. Does it feel lighter, less stressful, more in line with the truth, closer to yourself? It will every time, but takes a little practice, so how about making this your life-long homework – changing judgment into gratitude?

It is our choice and birthright to be happy, so why not make that choice by choosing gratitude every time? In gratitude,

The way to move out of judgement is to move into Gratitude. - Neale Donald Walsch -

Since 1969, Rick’s path led him to many fine teachers, culminating in a major awakening to the nature of life. Since then, he has shared his gift with many others through his Heart Mastery Series & Experiencing Your Authentic Self Retreats - www.spirituality-bali.com His cultural change initiative – Cause No Harm, came as a conclusion of 23 years in the corporate world and became the subject of his book and TEDX Ubud talk in 2011 www.cause-no-harm.com Now living his dream in Bali, Rick owns “Namaste – The Spiritual Shop” and Namaste Retreat Centre in the mountains.

september 2015 Issue #26

23 Aries You have the feeling that you have been jostled by the energy of Uranus these last months and that the time has come now to get some rest. Give the best of your attention to your family, your friends and your home. The benefit will be immediately felt and you will be ready to start new projects.

Cancer The time of vacation and rest is over, back to the real world! You could be offered new professional responsibilities and would then have to re-arrange your planning. Do not feel torn between the will to progress with these opportunities and the desire to stay cocooning at home. Move forward!

Libra You love working in a team and you need it to feel at ease. But do not let others decide for you, even if it is with good intentions. Concentrate on your targets, gather your energies and work. It is not the right moment for partying and living it up. Your finances are protected and love is strong.

Capricorn Your relatives envy you and do not miss an opportunity for confrontation and arguments. In fact, they are secretly jealous of your quiet philosophy and of the way you have patiently built up your pleasant existence. Keep yourself apart from all family discussions, it will be for the best for the moment.

september 2015 Issue #26

1 - 30 september 2015 Taurus It seems that you have been worried by the state of your finances since the beginning of Summer. Mercury will bring you new ideas to develop your business and improve your situation, and you will feel secure again. There are tensions in your relationships, particularly at home. Be patient, and keep cool!

Leo Love is the theme for the month. Single, you are ready to make the encounter which will change your life, in couple your feelings are stronger than ever. The holidays are over but they have been great, and you should recharge your batteries. You are now ready for a new cycle full of positive thoughts.

Scorpio You are one of the winners of the month, especially in all fields related to your professional and financial life. Should you have money to invest, it is the right moment to do it. Saturn will help you to have a good look on your life and to define new orientations as well as to sweep away the past.

Aquarius The time for some fun has come. Love, create, enjoy life and make the changes you feel necessary in your everyday organization. You hate routine, everyone knows that. But concentrate on your private life, as much as possible, as you will enjoy a beautiful month of September with your loved one.

FATE & FORTUNE

Gemini Many demands and new opportunities. Your main concern is to sort out the good ones and avoid wasting time and energy with second hand projects. Concentrate your attention on one at a time, the results will soon come Your financial situation should improve in an appreciable way in the coming months.

Virgo Jupiter enters your sign every 12 years and will give you one full year to find new orientation with your life. It could be a new job, just the one of your dreams, a new love – a charming prince just around the corner? A fabulous year to come, luck will be at your side, open your eyes and move ahead!

Sagittarius What could make a Sagittarius happy? A long trip abroad of course! If this is not possible right now, start studying something – a foreign language, philosophy, history... – it will bring you intellectual satisfaction. The great changes you are expecting are not for the coming weeks, be patient.

Pisces A new story based on harmony and peace brings you a deep feeling of happiness. Energetic aspects coming from Mars will give a new intensity to your relationship and you are so astonished by all the confusion happening in your private life that you sometimes feel that things are getting too much for you.

Virgo

VIRGO AND LOVE: It is not easy to seduce one of the natives of this sign. Reasonable, governed by Mercury, men and women need an intellectual complicity to fall in love and to feel able to share everyday life with the one they choose. Their sense of order and responsibility takes often the first rank in their life and it is not always easy to free them from the burdens they often put on their shoulders. Sexuality is not their main concern but when they meet the right person they can become fantastic partners in all the fields of life. Loyal to their attachments, they will give love without limitation and can be trusted at any time. by Anne-Marie Comoretto

Fun and Interesting Facts about Indonesia & Bali • Indonesia is huge. Composed of 17,508 islands covering approximately 1,919,440 square kilometres and covers three time zones from Northern Sumatra to West Papua Guinea. • Of its 17,508 islands, only around 6,000 are inhabited by people.

• Indonesia is one of the most geographically and geologically interesting countries in the world. The islands of Indonesia are stretched out between the Australian and Pacific tectonic plate, making Indonesia one of the most changing geological areas in the world. Every day, the country experiences three vibrations and at least one earthquake.

• The name “Indonesia” was first used by the British in the mid-19th century. The word comes from the Greek word nesos, which means ‘island’, and the Latin name Indus which means land beyond the Indus river. Dutch colonists preferred to call Indonesia the Dutch East Indies or the Malayan Archipelago and so the name was adopted by the anti-colonial movement in the early 20th century.

Komodo Dragon

• Indonesia is home to thousands of different flora and fauna, making it the country with the second highest level of biodiversity in the world (Brazil is #1). Some of the flora and fauna are truly rare, such as the Rafflesia – the world’s largest flower.

• Some animals – like the Komodo dragon – are endemic only to Indonesia. In fact, Indonesia is the only place in the world to see a Komodo dragon in the wild. And Sumatra is the only place outside of Borneo to see Orangutan’s in the wild. • Although Bahasa Indonesia is the national language of Indonesia, there are over 700 indigenous languages. Most Indonesians speak their indigenous language as their mother tongue and Bahasa Indonesia for school and careers, making most Indonesians bilingual. • Indonesia has a massive population of over 238 million people, making it the fourth most populous country in the world – right after China, India and the USA. The island of Java, with over 140 million people, is the most populous island in the world. • Indonesia exports 3,000 tons of frogs’ legs to France each year. Bet you didn’t know that.

• Yet another strange Indonesian export involves the Asian palm civet and coffee berries. To be more specific, these small, cat-sized mammals are fed coffee berries. After they defecate, their faeces is collected, washed, and used to make kopi luwak. If that sounds gross to you, you should try it – the action of the civet’s stomach enzymes gives the coffee an unrivalled richness of flavour without any of the usual bitterness. As a result, Kopi luwak is the world’s most expensive beverage, costing around $1,000 per pound.

• While the majority of Indonesia’s population is Muslim, the small Indonesian Hindu population mostly lives in Bali. On the beautiful island, you’ll be able to catch a performance of the Wayang Kulit, or shadow puppets, as well as beautiful dance performances and Hindu-influenced sculpture. The irony of this, however, is that there is no word for ‘art’ in Balinese.

Wayang Kulit

• Speaking of Bali, Balinese Hinduism is rich with ancient superstitions. One that endures to this day is not letting a baby’s feet touch the ground for the first six months of the infant’s life. It’s done to prevent the devil entering the child and as a result, infants are continuously passed from relative to relative.

• Another fun fact about Bali is that almost everyone in Bali has had their teeth filed down. The practice is rooted in the belief that the six vices – anger, confusion, jealousy, drunkenness, desire, and greed – all enter the body through the top six teeth. By filing away the demonic ends, the vices are easily thwarted.
