LIBRARY

UGA® SEAL

Built around the most recognizable symbol of the university, the Arch, the University of Georgia® Seal is based on the Great Seal of the State of Georgia. The Arch stands atop the year of the university’s founding, 1785. Encircling the Arch is the university motto in Latin “Et docere et rerum exquirere causas” or, in English, “to teach, to serve, and to inquire into the nature of things.”

CHAPEL BELL TOWER

Ringing the Chapel bell after victories is one of the most cherished traditions at the University of Georgia. What the students, fans, and alumni waiting behind the Chapel on North Campus for their turn to ring the bell may not know, however, is that this is also one of the University’s oldest traditions. The earliest reference to the Chapel bell being rung in celebration of a victory can be found in the Red & Black newspaper on December 1, 1894 following a football victory over arch rival Auburn on November 24, 1894. References to the bell being rung in celebration of victories became common after this. A bell tower originally crowned the roof of the Chapel, but in 1913, it was found to be rotten and removed. The bell, which rang for religious services, for the beginning and ending of classes and in emergencies, was then housed in the wooden tower where it now stands.

CHEROKEE ROSE

The state flower of Georgia, the “Cherokee Rose” (Rosa laevigata), derives its name from the Cherokee Native American Tribe which widely distributed the plant.

The University of Georgia® library is not only a building, but also a symbol of education and a foundation of knowledge. After a fire destroyed the university’s original collection in 1830, UGA®’s first library was placed in the Ivy Building, which eventually became part of the Holmes-Hunter Academic Building. The main campus library as it exists today was constructed in 1953 with the assistance of a large bequest from Ilah Dunlap Little. The library is named in her honor.

SANFORD STADIUM AND UGA®

Named after former UGA® President Dr. S. V. Sanford, Sanford Stadium was completed in 1929 and witnessed its first game on October 12, 1929, between the Bulldogs of UGA® and the Bulldogs of Yale. UGA® emerged victorious by a score of 15-0. A unique facet of Sanford Stadium is that the privet hedges were planted around the field upon the stadium’s completion, giving rise to the expression that UGA®’s games are played “Between the Hedges.” “Uga” became the university’s official mascot in 1956, beginning a lineage of nine English bulldogs owned by the Seiler family of Savannah, Georgia.
