COHESIVE COVERAGE AND DESIGN USING TYPOGRAPHY AND CUT-OUTS

The Tigerland team possesses “The AnsWEr” for showcasing sophisticated layouts that adhere to design principles, particularly in terms of dominance and consistency. Their typography design and the thoughtful incorporation of cut-outs on diagonally designed spreads are truly impressive. Creative well-done packages can be found on nearly every spread in this book.

Blended coverage on this student life page brings various group trips to life. The use of colored type in all body copy creates consistency on the spread.

NOTEWORTHY :

Take a look at this carefully designed package located in the bottom left corner. The use of simple rectangles effectively anchors the layered cutouts, adding a unique touch. Additionally, the small quote boxes on the left bring more student coverage to this spread.

The basketball cut-out that jumps outside the main image draws the viewer’s attention, while the two thoughtfully designed packages in the top right and bottom left expand the coverage beyond mere photos and captions.

THEME : That’s Just the Half of it

BOOKNAME : The Saint

ADVISER : Lauren McCauley-Moore

VISUAL THEME DEVELOPMENT

The Saint staff uses strategically placed shapes cutting layouts in portions to let us know “That’s just the half of it”. Colored triangles covering a fraction of a spread and white lines cutting dominant images in half created clear visual theme development.

This cohesive and straightforward layout highlights both Trends and Favorites, effectively combining two topics on a single spread. The balance between content and whitespace creates a clean and organized appearance.

NOTEWORTHY :

Personalities

This showstopper clearly displays the theme with two split images. This is a simple and effective layout design that ties into “That’s just the half of it”.

This layered pull quote design appears throughout the book, along with images that are segmented by white lines. This technique enhances the theme while preserving the integrity of the images themselves.

BARDSTOWN HIGH SCHOOL Bardstown,

KY

THEME : A Blockbuster Year

BOOKNAME : The Stripe

ADVISER : Amy Flanagan

EDITOR : Gracyn Craig

REPRESENTATIVE : Becky Goins

CONTENT SUPPORTED BY STRONG VISUAL COMPONENTS

In The Stripe, you’ll discover graphic elements that reflect the 2024 movie theme. The book features thoughtful cutouts spotlighting individual students, creating a personal touch. Utilizing film strips, stars, and other movie-related graphics, the book beautifully unites to celebrate the students, who are truly the stars of the show!

Once more, we feature expertly crafted cutouts representing the

king and queen, complemented by MODS that enhance the overall layout. Extra cutouts that “pop” from the circles tie in with the popcorn graphic below, effectively reinforcing the theme.

Coverage of a unique student trip to the Dominican Republic to research coral restoration showcases “learning beyond Bardstown” and includes theme related graphical elements.

NOTEWORTHY

:

Highlighting basketball players with cutouts in this spread enhances its visual appeal and elevates it beyond traditional square photo designs, while also showcasing various aspects of the season.

In line with the theme “Lights, Camera, Homecoming,” the coverage features a creative blend of different student cutouts combined into one cohesive element while also maintaining balance between square photos and cutouts throughout the spread.

COLLEGE STATION

HIGH SCHOOL College Station, TX

THEME : For the Record

BOOKNAME : Cougar Pride

ADVISER : Krystle Lopez

EDITOR : Lorelei Harrison

REPRESENTATIVE : Tisha Nowak

TYPOGRAPHY AND CLEAR VISUAL THEME DEVELOPMENT

The Cougar Pride staff upped their typography game in “For the Record”. Meticulously designed headlines can be found on nearly every spread in this retro-themed book. The visual theme is clear in wavy lines and nostalgic fonts.

This spread design deviates from the conventional diagonal layout with a single wavy line that divides the page in half. The incorporation of various cut-outs highlights the diverse movements of the gymnasts.

NOTEWORTHY :

This eye-catching layout showcases a silhouetted background image as the foundation of this layered design. The headline design ties in with the retro theme and complements the adjacent cut-out.

The headline and package design truly enhance this spread. It’s uncommon to see two featured stories on a single cohesive layout, but in this case, it works well.

EXETER TOWNSHIP SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Reading, PA

THEME : We Are Exeter

BOOKNAME : Pioneer

ADVISER : John White and Michelle Klusewitz

EDITORS : Ashlynn Stansberry & Olivia Rucker

REPRESENTATIVE : Carolyn Oldham

VISUAL AND VERBAL THEME DEVELOPMENT

The Pioneer staff opted for a traditional book in “We are Exeter,” incorporating the X as a thoughtful element throughout the pages. As you browse through the book, you’ll notice the X subtly raised from the text, reinforcing the theme without detracting from the overall design. The thoughtful use of color and diverse text sizes brings together a cohesive package for 2024.

Selecting colors that enhance the photographs, along with a variety of headline styles, adds visual appeal to this spread. Additionally, the thoughtfully crafted captions effectively communicate the narrative of the 2024 yearbook staff.

The headline package highlights two big homecoming events - the parade and bonfire - featured in the spread while unifying them under the overarching theme of homecoming.

NOTEWORTHY :

The incorporation of cutouts for the dominant element makes this a standout piece. The subtle “X” complements the main image while the subheading package designs remain cohesive, each narrating a distinct story from the 2024 volleyball season.

KESWICK CHRISTIAN

SCHOOL St Petersburg, FL

THEME : EST.

BOOKNAME : The Crusader

ADVISER : Jennifer Ryan

EDITORS : Ella Dollins and Christina Snyder

REPRESENTATIVE : Steve Ferguson

INNOVATIVE AND CLEAN TYPOGRAPHY

The Crusader uses classic type to create a clear, unified approach to book typography. A 70th school anniversary is commemorated but the book puts its primary focus on the students in the school this year. While there is a nod to the past in the form of school traditions and long-time personnel, a modern look is still clearly visible in the book. Historical photos are complemented by a chronological organization of the book.

Large, overlapping type in varying shades lend an air of class to the pages and blend with the

Muted earth tones inside the book complement the cover.

Statistics point out new information about the cheerleaders. A simple black and white photo adds to the visual variety.

NOTEWORTHY :

A wide variety of student ages are shown on the spread; typography shows keen knowledge of white space with justification toward the inside of the spread and copy ragged to the outside.

Research and good reporting show through here with student interviews and statistics on foreign languages used by students. Creative use of drop out backgrounds.

THEME : Read All About It

BOOKNAME : The Legacy

ADVISER : Hannah Berg

EDITORS : Gracie Quigley and Stella Quigley

REPRESENTATIVE : Peter Magelssen

GRAPHIC STRATEGIES AND COLOR FOR THEMATIC DEVELOPMENT

“Read all about it” in the Legacy, where the team skillfully employed graphics and contrasting colors to convey the theme’s fluidity. By incorporating newspaper clippings on the cover, they effectively illustrated the theme throughout the publication. The vibrant pops of red on each spread not only create a sense of consistency but also enhance visual appeal.

The incorporation of a thick margin border is distinctive and visually attractive, while the layout adheres to all design principles.

NOTEWORTHY :

This captivating closing spread showcases depth through layered photos, while the contrasting colors and varying text sizes draw the viewer’s attention effectively.

The newspaper clippings continue to contribute to the theme without being distracting. Thoughtfully designed modules and ample internal margins create an effective layout for the spread.

MARYVILLE HIGH SCHOOL Maryville, TN

THEME : Along for the Ride

BOOKNAME : The Appalachian

ADVISER : Morgan Petree

REPRESENTATIVE : Ben Smith

VERBAL THEME DEVELOPMENT THROUGHOUT

The Appalachian staff took us “Along for the ride” through the 2023-2024 school year using creative spin-offs, well composed photos and elaborate story telling through extended quotes and well-written features.

CONQUERING

The spin-off in A Trip Around the Sun is effectively utilized, linking this spread to the overarching theme, while extended quotes help convey the complete narrative behind each photo.

NOTEWORTHY

:

In this layout, the designer transformed a conventional group page design by incorporating engaging packages that highlight students from each group.

A compelling feature story, accompanied by photos of athletes who made a difference this season, along with a strategically placed pull quote, truly captures the essence of this football season.

MILTON HERSHEY

CATHERINE HALL Hershey, PA

THEME : 24/7 365

BOOKNAME : Pantheon

ADVISER : Clare Ogle and Heather Doll

REPRESENTATIVE : Carolyn Oldham

SIMPLE SHAPE CARRIES THE THEME THROUGHOUT

The Pantheon team dedicated themselves around the clock, “24/7 365,” to this book, emphasizing the theme with vibrant broken circles. A simple shape adds immense vitality to the pages. Thoughtfully composed photographs paired with relevant text, along with careful use of color and typography, ensure a cohesive visual experience.

Sometimes

Connecting the daily routine to a timeline aligns seamlessly with the theme. The detailed captions and well-crafted narrative effectively outline the day’s events.

The colorful broken circles in the background complement the main photo in this spread, while the overall diagonal layout guides the viewer’s eye from left to right, ending with the well-crafted story.

NOTEWORTHY :

Incorporating circles around the students quoted in the MOD connects this page to the cover design and theme, while caption headers add a touch of sophistication to the design.

Four distinct packages on this layout come together to create a cohesive design that is simple to navigate. The dominant photo is cropped to show the circular shape from the roller coaster, connecting with the recurring theme found throughout the book.

The Acropolis team was able to “breakthrough” walls by incorporating solid color backgrounds that illustrate cracks in a sturdy surface. The consistent application of colors is evident throughout the book, highlighted by additional sidebar blocks and outlines surrounding the images.

Photo: Zhanea Freeland

By layering elements on this spread, you can bring all components closer together while maintaining generous outer margins and a good amount of whitespace.

The distinctive quote box design for these senior quotes serves as the foundation for this entire spread and provides a refreshing contrast to the standard layout of spreads.

NOTEWORTHY :

The purple backdrop, featuring cracks on the left, serves as the background for this layout, which incorporates extended captions, informative headings, and a simple list in the sidebar.

STREAMING MEDIA VIBE WELL EXECUTED

The black background gives dramatic effect to this showstopper spread. The Hot Takes headline and subhead noting the cruel and unforgiving summer expertly ties back to the theme.

Even bloopers have a place in the book! Celebrate the hard work of the yearbook staff and tie it into the theme.

NOTEWORTHY :

Here’s another perspective on single-page design. The visual theme is accentuated by the “forward” arrows in the background.

NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY

THEME : Under the Lights

BOOKNAME : Agromeck

ADVISER : Ray Black

EDITORS : Jermaine Hudson

REPRESENTATIVE : Kent Sutton

COVERAGE OF ALL ASPECTS OF STUDENT LIFE, SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY

North Carolina University students and the community are seen “Under the Lights” in the 2023-2024 Agromeck. From start to finish, the primary and secondary coverage provides readers with a comprehensive overview of the year. The spreads include key stories along with detailed captions. Engaging interviews are evident through the compelling quotes featured throughout.

NOTEWORTHY :

This attention-grabbing spread is both dramatic and visually stunning. The incorporation of cutouts against a black background, along with text-wrapped body copy, comes together to form an impressive design.

The Agromeck staff’s take on a traditional spread pulls colors from the photos for use in their headline design, while the dominant photo bleeds off the page, further enhancing the photographers repetition technique.

NOTEWORTHY :

Another showstopper spread in this book features a monochromatic color scheme that highlights various sports and campus organizations. The entire layout is tilted, yet it utilizes the space effectively.

SACRED HEART ACADEMY

THEME : It’s our...TIME

BOOKNAME : The Angeline

ADVISER : Allie Teta

REPRESENTATIVE : Becky Goins

VERBAL THEME DEVELOPMENT

The Angeline staff took a concept as simple as time and verbally carried this through their book with spin offs in their headlines and various caption heads. Thoughful use of the color red in typography created consistency throughout. “It’s our...TIME” is well thought out from beginning to end.

MATTERS

The distinct packages on this layout are clearly visible thanks to the generous internal margins and nearly symmetrical design. In particular, the package located at the bottom left stands out for its well-done design.

SUBSTANTIVE COVERAGE IN A PLAYFUL PACKAGE

With a playful, yet functional design that accommodates multiple easy to read packages per spread, the Ursus staff works with retro-style elements in “For the Record”. A groovy font combines with a serif on the cover and in the headlines while the rainbow graphic can be seen throughout leading the eye through the spread in most layouts.

Coverage is extensive on this spread with multiple athletes featured and the design pushing all whitespace to the our edges of the layout.

NOTEWORTHY :

This well designed spread features various school clubs including yoga, book club, weight lifting, and unified bears. Great use of lines to help lead you through the sections.

The retro aesthetic featured on this opening page introduces a playful theme, providing substantial coverage throughout.

ST. THOMAS EPISCOPAL

SCHOOL

Houston, TX

THEME : ReDefine

BOOKNAME : The Belltower

ADVISER : Kathrine Gilmer

EDITORS : Audrey Nguyen

REPRESENTATIVE : Milani Arguelles

CLEAN DESIGN ACCOMMODATES EXTENSIVE COVERAGE

By thinking creatively to “ReDefine” layouts, the Belltower staff produces sleek designs featuring thin lines that frame the main subjects in their prominent images, highlighting a specific aspect of the larger picture. The emphasis on perfection was evident in the meticulous and comprehensive coverage found in the 2023-2024 book.

Sleek design on this division page leads the viewer from the dominant image to the table of contents where typography design is on point.

RE DEFINING HOME

NOTEWORTHY

:

In this unique coverage of international students, the focus is on redefining the meaning of home in the well written write-ups for each student featured and quoted.

By stepping away from the traditional symmetrical portrait layout, this spread highlights thoughtfully crafted MODs, showcasing spacious internal margins that distinctly separate the featured staff.

LEANING IN TO YOUR COMMUNITY

Suncoast High School leans into it’s Florida community by exemplifying bright, sunny colors and vivid graphics that remind you the sun. A choice of matte finish cover combined with an embossed high gloss theme statement demonstrate the theme verbally as well as visually. Key phrases are highlighted in the opening copy such as “beyond,” “further,” “surpass” and “new heights.”

flair

A keen awareness of the rule of “less is more” when it comes to highlight

The lavender color is used three times on the spread in two headlines and a sidebar, and then as the color choice for caption headlines. Captions are creative and well researched, showing the work of good journalism students.

The always difficult to get swimming photo is a winner. We see the face clearly recognizable and the focus on the swimmer’s face. Statistics are informative for the reader, and the module with pictures clustered together is eye-appealing.

giving thanks

NOTEWORTHY :

Many photos that might not have necessarily have been prominent elsewhere in the book are used here, highlighted 100+ students and giving the reader pause to look if they might be featured in one of these pics.

Once again statistics make the spread relevant to this year’s students. The staff followed through with the difficult task of tracking down out-of-country photos that were yearbook worthy. Additionally, the use of justified type to the inside and ragged type to the outside demonstrate a keen knowledge of type design.

ADVISER : Randy Stano

EDITORS : Carolina Camus

REPRESENTATIVE : Steve Ferguson

STUNNING PHOTOGRAPHY TELLS THE STORY

The IBIS staff uses stunning photography to their advantage with simple showstopper spreads showcasing photos from bleed line to bleed line. Covering not only school but hitting on community and covering local hangout areas truly encompasses college life at the University of Miami.

Covering surrounding communities where students hang out help bring the city’s culture back to the book. The use of the 3D font and inset images on all the hang out spreads create unity in this section. The students walking past the mural is especially nice, tying the community to the student body.

NOTEWORTHY :

This division page design is unique with the angled edges of the photos fitting them together like a puzzle and one cutout on the bottom left anchoring the table of contents.

The use of text wrap around the cut-out completes the story package. Sometimes less is more with a few great photographs telling the story of the year.

VENICE

HIGH SCHOOL Venice, FL

THEME : It’s All Part of the Equation

BOOKNAME : The Warrior

ADVISER : Faith Nellis

EDITORS : Sophie Buchmeier and Emma Noble

REPRESENTATIVE : John Pantelis

A JOURNALISTIC APPROACH TO ALL THE NUMBERS OF THE YEAR

The Warrior staff leaned in to the numbers that related to the school year. Throughout the book there is type in the form of numbers along with lines and special effects to make the concept stand out for the reader. The odds, the weeks of school, the number of casts in the school play are all Part of the Equation.

The writing leans into more informative captions to tell the story of this page. The subtle use of the brackets from the cover are carried on to this spread, along with multiple subheads and even a graphic treatment of the folio that relates to the cover. Of course page numbers are treated as part of the equation!

[

NOTEWORTHY :

The yearbook staff found a tie in with numbers and equations again, using the story angle of two casts for the school play. In depth captions about cast members show that the staff is doing a great job doing the legwork of good yearbook journalism.

Overlapping text tie a powerful headline and a strong dominant photo together. Green and mint color tones are sprinkled tastefully around the spread. Even with the book leaning in on short, choppy worded headlines, a thoughtfully prepared subhead supports the main headline.

In another dramatic showstopper, the spotlight is on the student singer while surrounding packages tell the rest of the story.

NOTEWORTHY :

The main image stands out as the focal point, bleeding beyond the top and bottom edges of the spread, while the vertical text used in the headline and subheadings complements the overall layout.

In this classic layout design, the embedded headline and the arrangement of clustered images guide the viewer in a clockwise motion directly to the story.

When a book is a page-turner, it’s so interesting that it’s difficult to put down. As a rule, yearbooks are page turners. Then what makes the reader stop turning pages?
