EDITOR : Lorelei Harrison
REPRESENTATIVE : Tisha Nowak
TYPOGRAPHY AND CLEAR VISUAL THEME DEVELOPMENT
The Cougar Pride staff upped their typography game in “For the Record”. Meticulously designed headlines can be found on nearly every spread in this retro-themed book. The visual theme is clear in wavy lines and nostalgic fonts.
This spread design deviates from the conventional diagonal layout with a single wavy line that divides the page in half. The incorporation of various cut-outs highlights the diverse movements of the gymnasts.
NOTEWORTHY :
This eye-catching layout showcases a silhouetted background image as the foundation of this layered design. The headline design ties in with the retro theme and complements the adjacent cut-out.
The headline and package design truly enhance this spread. It’s uncommon to see two featured stories on a single cohesive layout, but in this case, it works well.
EXETER TOWNSHIP SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
Reading, PA
THEME : We Are Exeter
BOOKNAME : Pioneer
ADVISER : John White and Michelle Klusewitz
EDITORS : Ashlynn Stansberry & Olivia Rucker
REPRESENTATIVE : Carolyn Oldham
VISUAL AND VERBAL THEME DEVELOPMENT
The Pioneer staff opted for a traditional book in “We are Exeter,” incorporating the X as a thoughtful element throughout the pages. As you browse through the book, you’ll notice the X subtly raised from the text, reinforcing the theme without detracting from the overall design. The thoughtful use of color and diverse text sizes brings together a cohesive package for 2024.
Selecting colors that enhance the photographs, along with a variety of headline styles, adds visual appeal to this spread. Additionally, the thoughtfully crafted captions effectively communicate the narrative of the 2024 yearbook staff.
The headline package highlights two big homecoming events - the parade and bonfire - featured in the spread while unifying them under the overarching theme of homecoming.
NOTEWORTHY :
The incorporation of cutouts for the dominant element makes this a standout piece. The subtle “X” complements the main image while the subheading package designs remain cohesive, each narrating a distinct story from the 2024 volleyball season.

INNOVATIVE AND CLEAN TYPOGRAPHY
The Crusader uses classic type to create a clear, unified approach to book typography. A 70th school anniversary is commemorated but the book puts its primary focus on the students in the school this year. Historical photos are complemented by a chronological organization of the book.

Muted earth tones inside the book complement the cover.

Four distinct packages on this layout come together to create a cohesive design that is simple to navigate. The dominant photo is cropped to show the circular shape from the roller coaster, connecting with the recurring theme found throughout the book.

COVERAGE OF ALL ASPECTS OF STUDENT LIFE, SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY

From start to finish, the primary and secondary coverage provides readers with a comprehensive overview of the year. The spreads include key stories along with detailed captions. Engaging interviews are evident through the compelling quotes featured throughout.
NOTEWORTHY :
This attention-grabbing spread is both dramatic and visually stunning. The incorporation of cutouts against a black background, along with text-wrapped body copy, comes together to form an impressive design.
The Agromeck staff’s take on a traditional spread pulls colors from the photos for use in their headline design, while the dominant photo bleeds off the page, further enhancing the photographers repetition technique.
NOTEWORTHY :
Another showstopper spread in this book features a monochromatic color scheme that highlights various sports and campus organizations. The entire layout is tilted, yet it utilizes the space effectively.

NOTEWORTHY :
In another showstopper design, the typography truly captures attention, while the heading once more connects to the theme of time on the topic of senior memories.
With a playful, yet functional design that accommodates multiple easy to read packages per spread, the Ursus staff works with retro-style elements in “For the Record”. A groovy font combines with a serif on the cover and in the headlines while the rainbow graphic can be seen throughout leading the eye through the spread in most layouts.
Coverage is extensive on this spread with multiple athletes featured and the design pushing all whitespace to the our edges of the layout.
NOTEWORTHY :
This well designed spread features various school clubs including yoga, book club, weight lifting, and unified bears. Great use of lines to help lead you through the sections.
The retro aesthetic featured on this opening page introduces a playful theme, providing substantial coverage throughout.

Sleek design on this division page leads the viewer from the dominant image to the table of contents where typography design is on point.
RE DEFINING HOME

A keen awareness of the rule of “less is more” when it comes to highlight
The lavender color is used three times on the spread in two headlines and a sidebar, and then as the color choice for caption headlines. Captions are creative and well researched, showing the work of good journalism students.
The always difficult to get swimming photo is a winner. We see the face clearly recognizable and the focus on the swimmer’s face. Statistics are informative for the reader, and the module with pictures clustered together is eye-appealing.
giving thanks
NOTEWORTHY :
Many photos that might not have necessarily have been prominent elsewhere in the book are used here, highlighted 100+ students and giving the reader pause to look if they might be featured in one of these pics.
Once again statistics make the spread relevant to this year’s students. The staff followed through with the difficult task of tracking down out-of-country photos that were yearbook worthy. Additionally, the use of justified type to the inside and ragged type to the outside demonstrate a keen knowledge of type design.

STUNNING PHOTOGRAPHY TELLS THE STORY
The IBIS staff uses stunning photography to their advantage with simple showstopper spreads showcasing photos from bleed line to bleed line. Covering not only school but hitting on community and covering local hangout areas truly encompasses college life at the University of Miami.
Covering surrounding communities where students hang out help bring the city’s culture back to the book. The use of the 3D font and inset images on all the hang out spreads create unity in this section. The students walking past the mural is especially nice, tying the community to the student body.
NOTEWORTHY :
This division page design is unique with the angled edges of the photos fitting them together like a puzzle and one cutout on the bottom left anchoring the table of contents.
The use of text wrap around the cut-out completes the story package. Sometimes less is more with a few great photographs telling the story of the year.

BOOKNAME : The Warrior
ADVISER : Faith Nellis
EDITORS : Sophie Buchmeier and Emma Noble

A JOURNALISTIC APPROACH TO ALL THE NUMBERS OF THE YEAR
The Warrior staff leaned in to the numbers that related to the school year. Throughout the book there is type in the form of numbers along with lines and special effects to make the concept stand out for the reader. The odds, the weeks of school, the number of casts in the school play are all Part of the Equation.
The writing leans into more informative captions to tell the story of this page. The subtle use of the brackets from the cover are carried on to this spread, along with multiple subheads and even a graphic treatment of the folio that relates to the cover. Of course page numbers are treated as part of the equation!
[
NOTEWORTHY :
The yearbook staff found a tie in with numbers and equations again, using the story angle of two casts for the school play. In depth captions about cast members show that the staff is doing a great job doing the legwork of good yearbook journalism.
Overlapping text tie a powerful headline and a strong dominant photo together. Green and mint color tones are sprinkled tastefully around the spread. Even with the book leaning in on short, choppy worded headlines, a thoughtfully prepared subhead supports the main headline.

In this classic layout design, the embedded headline and the arrangement of clustered images guide the viewer in a clockwise motion directly to the story.

it’s honorable to be among the books chosen here.
Chosen for their commitment to recording the history of their schools & memories of the year, the books created by these yearbook staffs are time capsules. Using photographs and text, the yearbooks recreate the year. Decades from now, students and staff will be able to revisit the moments and look back fondly.
