Journey to the Lost City: Exploring Peru’s legendary Inca Trail

As travel experiences go, Peru’s Inca Trail is up there with the best (it’s literally up there too - the altitude at Machu Picchu is 2,430 metres above sea level). Despite its height, you don’t need to be a fitness fanatic or mountain climber to experience South America’s most famous trek.

Numerous travel companies arrange Inca Trail tours and daily excursions to Machu Picchu. Some tackle the whole 26-mile hike over several spectacular days, and others (like Titan) take an easier but no less thrilling route into the high Peruvian Andes by train. But however you get there - tour, train or trekthe reward at the end of the Inca Trail is jaw-dropping: Machu Picchu, Peru’s signature archaeological site.

13.3025° S, 72.8833° W

What and where is the Inca Trail?

The Inca Trail is the most famous walking route in South America, trodden by thousands of walkers, hikers and travellers every year. Linking the Sacred Valley near Cuzco to the ancient Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, it was constructed in the 15th century as a route for pilgrims, supplies and nobles to the royal estate. Today, the Inca Trail offers the quintessential South American travel experience: stone terraces, misty mountains, orchidstrewn cloud forests and mysterious Inca ruins.

Why is this Inca Trail so important?

The ancient Incas built trailsextensive roads and pathways - across the whole of Peru and Ecuador, with buildings along the way where travellers (and their llamas) could stop to rest, refresh and restock for the journey ahead.

The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu stands out because of Machu Picchu itself - its scale, precision and the skill required to build it; it’s the one you’ll read about in the guidebooks.

Urubamba river, Sacred Valley of the Incas, Peru
Cruz del Condor, Colca Canyon, Peru

What makes Machu Picchu so special?

It’s not just the setting that makes Machu Picchu special. Perfectly crafted into and around the steep mountainous terrain, the citadel was built when the Inca had no iron, steel or wheels. Every stone is so precisely cut they fit together without mortar, and the terraces were designed and engineered in such a way as to preserve soil, promote agriculture, aid irrigation and limit erosion on the surrounding slopes. The site is a mind-blowing testament to the power and skill of the Inca Empire.

How long does the Inca Trail take and what are the highlights?

The hike usually takes four or five days. You’ll walk for about six hours every day, sometimes at considerably higher altitudes than Machu Picchu itself, and temperatures can vary - up to 26° C on warm days down to -2° C in the early morning. But there are other, easier ways to experience the magic of the Inca Trail, including travelling up by train or just focusing on a particular section of the trail. The train journey tracing the Urubamba River through the Sacred Valley of the Incas before ascending slowly, thrillingly, into the Peruvian Andes is truly magical. And, whilst Machu Picchu is undoubtedly the megastar of the show, the scenery along the way makes a very worthy supporting cast.

When’s the best time of year to visit?

The best time of year to visit Machu Picchu on a tour, or to hike the Inca Trail, is in the months before and after the rainy season, so during April and May or between September and mid-December. June, July and August are dry but busy. The Inca Trail is closed throughout February every year for maintenance.

Can I see Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail on a Titan tour?

Absolutely! Their Wild Peru tour allows you to hike the final portion of the Inca Trail, a 6/7-hour walk that’ll reward you with spectacular views. You can also choose to take the train if you’re not up for hiking. Alternatively, their Footsteps of the Incas tour explores coastal Lima, mythical Lake Titicaca and the gargantuan Colca Canyon, home to soaring Andean condors, before travelling by Pullman-style train to Cuzco, from where your journey continues through the Sacred Valley and up into the mountains to Machu Picchu.

Destination dupes: Discover the path less travelled

N, 35.4511° E

The Siq, ancient city of Petra, Jordan

Craving authentic cultural immersion away from the tourist-packed hotspots?

A growing wave of travellers is trading the tried-and-true for lesser-known treasures, seeking sustainable experiences, fewer crowds and a deeper connection to local life. The answer is ‘destination dupes’ –alternative locations that offer similar magic without the masses.

Jordan instead of Egypt

Jordan’s treasures rival Egypt’s grandeur, from the ancient rose-red city of Petra to the vast deserts of Wadi Rum. Float in the mineral-rich waters of the Dead Sea, explore

Amman’s lively markets or wander the Roman ruins of Jerash. We work with UK tour operators who cover all these highlights, including lesserknown sites like Ajloun Castle and Shobak Castle. The Petra by Night experience transforms this UNESCO site into a magical spectacle, as the city is illuminated by candlelight under cooler evening temperatures.

Bolivia instead of Peru

Even though Machu Picchu steals the spotlight, Bolivia offers equally awe-inspiring landscapes and cultural treasures. Visit the spectacular Uyuni Salt Flats, the colourful markets of La Paz and the historic city of Sucre. Adrenaline-seekers can bike down the Death Road or explore the surreal rock formations of the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve. During the rainy season, the Salar de Uyuni turns into a mesmerising reflective mirror under the moonlight.

Greenland instead of Iceland

What’s the deal with destination dupes? This trend has soared in popularity as travellers prioritise sustainable tourism and meaningful exploration. Here’s why they’re worth adding to your radar:

Avoiding the crowds: Say goodbye to selfie sticks and queues; dupes deliver a more calming experience

Saving money: Lesservisited destinations often come with smaller price tags

Sustainability: Choosing off-the-beaten-path locations helps ease over-tourism

Coupled with the rising trend of night tourism, these must-visit dupes could completely transform your next adventure.

Whilst Iceland’s volcanic landscapes and Northern Lights are infamous, a Greenland coolcation has lots to offer. Explore Ilulissat Icefjord, or take a boat tour to witness calving glaciers. Visit Nuuk, the colourful capital, or kayak through the fjords near Sisimiut. Summer months bring the midnight sun, whilst winter promises dancing views of the aurora borealis without the overwhelming tourist influx.

Azores instead of Hawaii

Portugal’s nine-island Azores archipelago is a stunning alternative to Hawaii. Explore the unspoilt volcanic craters and green trails of São Miguel’s Sete Cidades alongside year-round whale watching in the deep blue Atlantic. Unwind in the geothermal hot springs of Furnas Valley or swim in natural ocean pools along the rugged coastline. Visit Pico Island to climb Portugal’s highest peak, tour its UNESCOlisted vineyards and enjoy the unparalleled stargazing in the designated Dark Sky Reserves. G Adventures combines hiking, biking, rafting and kayaking into an action-packed 6-day adventure.

25.8844°N 56.0605°E

Ningaloo Reef instead of the Great Barrier Reef

Australia’s Ningaloo Reef rivals its famous cousin, with abundant marine life that makes its home in these waters and the rare opportunity to swim alongside majestic whale sharks. Located off the coast of Western Australia, this UNESCO World Heritage Site can be explored through snorkelling, kayaking or guided marine safaris. For the adventurous, night dives reveal a magical world of glowing corals and nocturnal sea creatures.

Ras al Khaimah instead of Dubai

Swap Dubai’s glitz for the authentic allure of Ras al Khaimah (RAK), where heritage and natural beauty take centre stage. RAK offers ancient forts, pristine beaches and dramatic rocky landscapes. The Jebel Jais mountain range is home to the world’s longest zipline, or you can join a desert safari under the stars to discover Emirati hospitality.

Live the legend of Norway

Dog sledding, North Norway

Since 1893, Hurtigruten has been the heart of Norwegian coastal travel. Sail with us to experience authentic journeys with unmatched expertise and unforgettable scenery.

Our Original voyages connect Norway’s local communities and have been the heart and soul of the coast for over 130 years. Sailing on an Original voyage means you will experience their famous Coastal Express route, visiting 34 diverse ports day and night, from frontier Arctic cities to quiet fishing villages, spending between 10 minutes and several hours in each.

Signature voyages are Hurtigruten’s elevated front-row experiences to Norway’s highlights, with premium all-inclusive food and drink and

enhanced on-board guiding. Choose The Svalbard Line and sail the coast of Norway in summer or autumn to the remote Arctic archipelago of Svalbard and the last town before the North Pole. Or sail on The North Cape Line, a Northern Lights adventure between Oslo and the North Cape at the top of Europe, in winter or spring. We’ll visit one or two ports each day for several hours at a time.

Norway’s coastal kitchenfresh ingredients, sourced where we sail

On a Hurtigruten voyage, you won’t just see the Norwegian coast; you’ll taste it too. As you sail its length, you’ll enjoy only the finest homegrown produce from each port visited.

Plus, local farms, bakeries and producers across Norway are supported to make sure your food is ethical and sustainable. In our on-board restaurants, enjoy the likes of melt-in-your-mouth cod from Vesterålen, award-winning cheeses from Lofoten and quality craft beer from Bergen.

Sourcing food locally isn’t just about fresh, farm-and-fjord-to-table flavours. It’s also about achieving the lowest footprint possible and making sure there is minimal food waste.

Some say you really haven’t seen all of Norway until you have experienced each of its seasons

Owing to the country’s vast distances, the climate and seasons vary quite a lot between regions. All on-board activities, restaurant menus and shore excursions change according to the time of year and the waters we sail in. Each season brings with it new opportunities to experience a Hurtigruten voyage in an entirely different light, both literally and figuratively.

Dinner is served in Røst
MS Trollfjord in Hjorundfjorden

Spring

March, April and May are the most exciting months to visit Norway, when you can enjoy the best of both sun and snow in one sailing. Norwegians even have a word that captures all the goodness that spring brings: vårfølelse, which we translate as ‘springfulness’.

Southern Norway blooms first, with verdant slopes, cyan skies and the first flowers. Enjoy the warmer weather in the south with hikes and kayaking trips. Northern Norway in the Arctic will be a white wonderland for fun excursions like dog sledding.

Summer

Summer is the most popular season to explore Norway’s coastline. The days are endless north of the Arctic Circle and there is perpetual daylight along the entire Norwegian coastline. This is all thanks to the Midnight Sun, a natural phenomenon where the sun never sets below the horizon, even at midnight.

Excursion options on your voyage include exhilarating boat rides, sea eagle safaris, sea and river kayaking, and hikes across mountain valleys, sandy beaches and lofty alpine peaks. Watch in awe as cascading waterfalls deliver winter’s snowmelt into the sea, right next to the blooming flowers of hillsides and valleys.

Autumn

September, October and November are a great time to discover the Norwegian coast as summer crowds disappear, making it easier to enjoy serene sailings in spectacular scenery in the season of colour. Autumn is also peak harvest time, which means it’s top foodie season at Hurtigruten. Seafood, meat, dairy

products, foraged mushrooms and berries, and seasonal vegetables are all delivered directly to the ships.

Winter

Winter is perhaps the most beautiful time to explore Norway’s coastline and is the best season to witness the Northern Lights. Pure white snow covers the landscape. The air is fresh, crisp and clear. Mountaintops silhouette against a backdrop of polar twilight, and clusters of cosy homes glow on the shoreline like fires in the distance. Sailing with Hurtigruten, at sea and far away from light pollution, provides some of the best possibilities to view the magical celestial lightshow of ghostly green, red and dark purple.

Put down your phone and pick up your passport

Despite any 2025 resolutions that may have been made, for most, the time spent staring at screens is only increasing. Be it the rise in working from home, streaming shows or communicating through messenger apps, our expanding engagement with the digital world means real connections with people and places are diminishing.

So, it’s no surprise that growing numbers are looking to enjoy digital detox trips in off-grid environments that force travellers to engage in more authentic ways.

Small group travel, where traditional connections are prioritised, is spearheading this trend, as are genuine cultural and nature experiences, which invite travellers to enjoy a more embodied approach to their time away.

Centred around reducing digital fatigue - a phenomenon felt when screens dominate the day - digital detox trips offer a welcome silence. Forget socialising, streaming and scrolling, for many, putting the phone or laptop away on holiday signals truly switching off

Travellers are being lured to more off-the-beaten-track destinations, like the vast deserts of Namibia and remote, mountainous Bhutan, where they can immerse themselves in boundless nature.

Stays in eco-retreats, like Cae Mabon in North Wales and Finca Can Martí in Ibiza, designed to support better mental health, sleep and creativity, are also surging in popularity.

The same goes for wellness holidays, at destinations like Mountain Trek in Canada, SHA Wellness Clinic in Spain and Euphoria Retreat in Greece, where guests are encouraged to create healthier digital habits.

Be it OOD’s low-impact, mirror houses in Estonia, which offer views of untouched woodland instead of unlimited wifi or luxury resorts like BodyHoliday in St Lucia, which positions itself as the antidote to the pressures of modern life, the reduced stress and improved productivity that digital detox breaks invite is forging new travel paths.

23.8933° S, 16.0045° E

Getting away from the screen also encourages travellers to look up and explore more, signalling why culturally authentic travel experiences are on the rise in 2025 too. Away from manufactured interactions, many travellers want to connect deeper with local communities, particularly through homestay or agritourism accommodation choices and by using public transport.

Creating space for more genuine interactions in and with destinations, travellers are keen to get out of their comfort zone and adventure more sustainably.

A preference for local guides and tour operators is also on the rise in 2025, as visitors seek more unique experiences that create lasting, impactful memories away from overdone, Instagramfamous spots.

Through skill-learning opportunities like basket weaving in Tunisia, salt fish cooking in Barbados and rock climbing in Greece, authentic travel-seekers are also able to gain exciting new skills.

Luxury tour operator Abercrombie & Kent curates deeply immersive travel experiences across seven continents that invite visitors to explore destinations more deeply.

The desire to share more authentic travel experiences with others, as well as form new social connections, is also gaining traction in 2025, especially amongst younger generations.

In a world of digital saturation, feelings of loneliness are rising, so small group travel, where travellers can meet like-minded people, is another growing trend.

Cox & Kings offers expert-designed adventures for small group tours, and Insider Journeys crafts intimate journeys with as few as two travellers.

Allowing visitors to explore foreign destinations more cost-effectively, whilst also benefitting from safety and support in numbers, small group travel balances opportunities for interaction with more reflective solo time.

The desire to connect more deeply with people and nature is informing how many want to travel in 2025.

Japan

Japan has long been one of the world’s most unique and intriguing destinations, a place of rich timeless culture and age-old tradition fused with a modernity that’s fast paced and vibrant.

So, what comes to mind when you think of Japan? Sushi, of course. Mount Fiji is a given. Bullet trains, Tokyo, Kyoto, samurai and geisha too. Whilst these are some of the things/places/experiences that this archipelago of islands is famous for, there is, of course, so, so much more to discover here.

Aside from its friendly people, fabulous food, quirky use of technology (hello, singing toilets and vending machines!), fast and efÏcient ways to get around and natural beauty, it is the richness of Japan’s culture that visitors really fall in love with. Having been closed off from the world for centuries, Japan developed a very distinct mix of traditions, etiquette, beliefs and legends, and is a place today where ancient philosophies are still fully integrated into day-to-day life. It’s also very easily experienced, as ancient temples, traditional garb and age-old rituals are often seen metres from the futuristic modernity for which Japan is also well known – the unique fashion, shining skyscrapers and bright lights.

It’s easy to see why Japan is so popular there aren’t many other places in the world where it is quite so easy to immerse yourself in a different cultural mindset and have such an incredible time doing it.

China

China is big. Really big. With sweeping landscapes that are filled with incredible relics, sights and fast-paced cities. It is also one of the world’s oldest civilisations and, over time, has learnt to meld its ancient with the modern world effortlessly.

China continues to grow and develop at a staggering pace, but it remains very much aware of its deep roots - ancient philosophies and traditional values still very much at the heart of daily life, age-old temples still humming with life, parks still full of early morning tai chi classes and animated games of mahjong. With 5,000 years of history to explore and a complex culture to unravel, so much delicious food to taste and beautiful scenery to

admire, it may feel impossible to ever get an idea of what this country is about. And, whilst it would take forever to really uncover everything magnificent that China has to offer, it is oh so exciting to even just scratch the surface!

For those looking to do just that, there are must-see cities and sights, like the capital city of Beijing, the Great Wall, Terracotta Army, Shanghai, and cruising the Li and Yangtze rivers, which will give you a solid understanding of what it is that makes China tick. From there, you could delve even deeper, find bigger landscapes, discover a greater diversity of people, admire more ancient and imperial treasures China really is a build-your-own adventure in the most marvellous of ways.

Uncovering accessible treasures in northern Portugal

41.0833° N, 7.1333° W

If you’re seeking a travel experience that blends history, nature and discovery, Northern Portugal’s Côa Valley, is a hidden gem waiting to be explored. This tranquil region offers a fascinating glimpse into the country’s past with its ancient rock art and rich biodiversity. It’s a destination that can be enjoyed by many, thanks to thoughtful accessibility features.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, nature lover or simply looking for an adventure with less of a focus on tourism, this trip is perfect for you.

With the support of your local agent, this journey with Intrepid Travel promises an unforgettable and inclusive experience.

During the Diversifying Travel Media Press Trip with Intrepid Travel to explore the Côa Valley, I discovered how thoughtful planning can make travel accessible and enriching.

The beginning of an unforgettable journey

Our journey began in Porto, a city where medieval charm and riverside views meet. The Moon & Sun Hotel,

an accessible and comfortable base, was ideally located near Porto’s key attractions. The hotel’s modern amenities, welcoming atmosphere and serene rooftop terrace provided a peaceful retreat. Intrepid Travel ensured that the hotel met accessibility needs, with attentive staff and thoughtful accommodations for those with mobility challenges.

From Porto, we travelled to the Côa Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its Palaeolithic rock art. The valley, home to ancient engravings, offers a rare connection to human history. At Casa Cisterna

guesthouse, we were introduced to local conservation efforts by the owners Ana and Antonio, including the restoration of wildlife and ancient cattle breeds. My accessibility needs were considered carefully, ensuring I had a room near the car park and easy access to the guesthouse.

The next day, we explored Faia Brava Reserve, Portugal’s first private nature reserve. Known for protecting endangered species, the reserve features rugged, breathtaking landscapes. The trails were accessible for all, providing plenty of rest stops and support for those with mobility challenges.

The group were able to take breaks at their own pace, ensuring no one missed out on the reserve’s beauty. We enjoyed a delicious picnic prepared by the generous staff of Casa Cisterna, surrounded by nature, showcasing how conservation and accessibility can go hand-in-hand.

Côa Valley

A highlight of the Côa Valley is its extraordinary Palaeolithic rock art, showcased at the Côa Museum. The museum offers an educational experience, with accessible displays and tailored audio guides for visitors with different needs.

No visit to northern Portugal is complete without experiencing the stunning Douro Valley, famous for its terraced vineyards and port wine production. At Quinta da Roêda winery, we learned about traditional winemaking methods and enjoyed sweeping views.

Despite the steep terrain, the winery was fully accessible, and Intrepid Travel provided transport to and from the estate.

This adventure, blending history, culture and nature, was seamlessly coordinated, which made the experience stress-free. What sets this journey apart is its focus on accessibility, ensuring that all

travellers, regardless of mobility or other specific needs, can enjoy the experience, with thoughtful accommodations, inclusive excursions and carefully planned details.

For those eager to explore the city of Porto, and Portugal’s more hidden gems like the Côa Valley and Douro Valley, this trip offers the ideal mix of adventure and inclusivity. If you have accessibility needs then don’t hesitate to travel with Intrepid Travel, who catered for all of our needs.
