WIN YOUR REAL BODY To commemorate the release of two books by International Body Transformation Specialist, Sonja Falvo, ‘The Real Body Plan’ & ‘The Real Body Real Food Plan’ Balanced and Sonja would like to offer r readers the opportunity to win a prize pack containing both books and a 12 month membership to www.RealBodyClub.com; prize is valued at $515.90. The Real Body books reveal the staggering truth about why low calorie diets set people up to fail, and more importantly, providing an alternative solution. Rather than advocating starvation, giving up your favorite foods and exercise routines that are best left to elite athletes, The Real Body Plan and Real Body Real Food Plan utilize the latest scientific research to maximize weight-loss. The unique part of The Real Body Club membership site is that Sonja spent 18 months developing a meal planning software program to make eating healthier quick and easy; members can plan an entire weeks meals, recipes and shopping list in less than 15 minutes! Falvo knows only too well about the dangers of extreme dieting from personal experience; her weight obsession earlier in life led to a vicious cycle of yo-yo dieting. In 2003 a bike accident resulted in a crush fracture in her spine and she was then diagnosed with borderline osteoporosis, which she found out was caused by her 10 years of yo-yo dieting and severe calorie restriction. This incident is what fuelled Falvo’s passion to find a healthy lifestyle solution for weight-loss and weight maintenance and create the vision of becoming ‘The Global Leader in Healthy & Sustainable Weight-Loss’. “By following my simple and effective lifestyle plan people begin to see positive changes within their first week; they have more energy, their clothes feel looser, and they just feel better in themselves, more self confident.” Says Falvo The Real Body Plan offers readers a complete step by step guide on how to successfully transform their bodies and their lives through creating a positive mindset, healthy eating, and a sensible approach to exercise. The Real Body Real Food Plan offers readers a simple and effective meal planning strategy with over 130 quick, easy and mouthwatering recipes from around the globe. With 3 of the world’s most sought after nutritionists creating these recipes, they are sure to please. To enter the competition for your chance to WIN check out the link on www.balancedmedia.com.au

How is your prosperity? Following a turbulent year marked by a global economic crisis, the Legatum Prosperity Index has released research defining the most prosperous nations on the planet, taking into consideration both wealth and wellbeing, and has found that the most prosperous nations in the world are not necessarily those that have only a high GDP, but are those that also have happy, healthy, and free citizens. Now in its third year, the 2009 edition of the Prosperity Index ranks 104 nations according to nine building blocks of prosperity, including education, health, governance, economic fundamentals, entrepreneurship and innovation, democratic institutions, safety and security, personal freedom and social capital. Finland tops this year’s Index, with the Australia ranking sixth, ahead of the United States and large European nations such as Britain, Germany and France which all still make the top 20. Finland is narrowly ahead of Switzerland, Sweden and Denmark up top with Zimbabwe ranking last, following Yemen and Sudan. Prosperity is concentrated in the North Atlantic – for now. Sixteen of the top 20 most prosperous countries sit in North America and Europe, however history is not destiny with highly ranked nations including those with a long history of productive economies, effective and limited government, and social capital as well as several other nations highly ranked that not long ago were afflicted with poverty, oppression, and unhappiness. Good governance is considered central to life satisfaction and economic progress. Countries in which sound governance creates satisfied citizens are also the most likely to have the healthiest economic fundamentals and the most entrepreneurial societies. It’s true that money can’t buy happiness ... unless you are poor. Only in the poorest countries do increases in income have a significant effect on people’s life satisfaction. The highest levels of overall life satisfaction are reported in countries which score best in the areas of health, safety, freedom, and social capital. The Prosperity Index helps to determine which factors influence people’s happiness more than others. The results show that being able to choose the course of your life is the most important ingredient of happiness – along with your good health and relationships.

Green tea linked to less stomach cancer in women NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - As if you needed another reason to drink green tea: Japanese women, but not Japanese men, who regularly drink 5 or more cups daily appear about 20 percent less likely to develop stomach cancer, study findings hint. Researchers have studied green tea in cancer prevention because they suspect that the drink’s antioxidants may protect against the deadly disease. In particular, it may include compounds that fight bacteria that have been linked to stomach cancer. However, previous studies were inconsistent, researchers write their report in the journal Gut. To get a better sense of green tea’s potential effects, Dr. M. Inoue, at the National Cancer Center in Tokyo, examined six older studies. Together, these studies involved more than 219,000 men and women 40 years and older, who were followed from about 7 years to more than 11 years. Overall, about four in five of the participants reported drinking green tea daily, with about a third drinking five or more cups per day. During follow-up, about 2500 of the approximately 100,000 men, and about 1000 of the more than 118,000 women in the studies developed stomach cancer. The researchers found no link between more tea drinking and reduced stomach cancer risk among men. The 20 percent reduced stomach cancer risk they saw among women drinking 5 or more, versus 1 or less, cups of green tea daily remained true even after the researchers took smoking into account. They note, however, that the decreased risk only applied to cancers in certain parts of the stomach. While the study does not prove a cause-effect relationship, the authors suggest more research to figure out whether drinking green tea actually decreases the risk of stomach cancer, or whether women with a lower risk only happen to drink more of it.

2 Wars - 90 Years 1 Home Vera was born in 1916, which was halfway through the Great War in Europe, in the family home in Red Hill. She was the youngest of 7 children, all of whom managed to fit into a 2 bedroom workers cottage, making good use of the ‘sleepout’, or verandah as we now call it. Made of timber and tin (not very thermal efficient materials) the little house would sometimes reach 100 degrees F internally, but that didn’t worry Vera and her siblings, who played on regardless. Of course, this was a time when playing on the street or wandering off to the park was quite normal for kids. With very few cars around the biggest danger was runaway horses. The kids all went to school at Milton State, some barefoot, and sometimes lucky enough to be given one penny each to buy a small pie from the pieman outside the school. Vera left school at 15 and went to work in a Government office as a typist until, in 1935, she met Harold (Harry) who she eventually married in 1937, just before the Second World War broke out. The newly weds bought their first house, a cottage in Red Hill (just 300 metres from Vera’s family home) in February 1936, for 480 pounds, with a mortgage from the Qld State Government. The house was, once again, a typical timber and tin cottage, and it was their ‘castle’. They loved their house and, for 2 short years, they spent all their spare time pottering around the house, gardening, painting fences and ‘making their house into a home’. Vera and Harry produced a son and a daughter before Harry was called up to go to war in 1940. When Harry boarded a troopship at Pinkenba in Brisbane in November 1940, it was to be the last time Vera would see him. Harry died in Singapore in 1942. In 2008, aged 92, I met Vera for the first time. She told me she had decided, after much encouragement from her relatives, to sell her ‘castle’ and move into a retirement village. And so, 5 weeks later the house was under contract, 6 weeks after that Vera said her final goodbyes to her beautiful home and closed the front door, clutching all those wonderful memories, for the last time. I spoke to Vera recently and she told me she missed her Red Hill cottage so much but that she was also very happy with her new life. 20 years of selling houses in central Brisbane has taught

me that the house itself is very often a secondary part of the equation, the emotional journey is what it’s all about. Happy Househunting Ted Walton - Belle Property Belle Property Paddington Principals, Ted Walton and Elizabeth Wright, lead a large team of highly experienced sales agents and property managers with an enviable reputation for results and service plus the rare benefit of an in-house auctioneer. Ted and Elizabeth moved their business from a mass franchise group to the boutique Belle Property network in 2009 – the same year it was launched in Brisbane. Selling all types of properties across all price ranges, vendors can list their homes with any agent at Belle Property Paddington and receive the additional benefit of Ted’s award-winning auctioneering services. ST VINNIES’ AT Are you getting the best deal possible? PADDINGTON NEEDS Chairman of Aussie Home Loans, Mr John Symond, has called for borrowers to look for a better loan deal for themselves following the Reserve Bank’s decision to lift official interest rates by 0.25 per cent to 3.25 per cent. Mr Symond suggested home owners and credit card holders should investigate their own financial situation and seek to offset the hike in the interest rates, which will hit their mortgages and other loans. He said, “Our research shows that more than 50 per cent of customers who speak to an Aussie adviser do not have the best home loan deal. The rate rise should prompt all borrowers to find a better deal, which could negate the latest rise altogether”. He added that Aussie’s research showed that home owners who refinance through the mortgage broker generally save up to 0.75 per cent on the standard variable rate, which could amount to tens of thousands of dollars over the life of the mortgage. Mr Symond added, “Credit card holders should also be looking to investigate whether they can get a better deal as many cards, particularly store cards, have interest rates now well over 20 per cent and the costs associated with them will rise”. To discuss this with your local Aussie Mortgage Broker Call Pat Phanekham on 0408 103 003 or pat. phanekham@aussie.com.au

GET READY TO ROLL up to 500 calories an hour and it’s low impact too! It’s much easier on your joints, tendons, and ligaments than running, jogging, or aerobics and you’ll boost endorphins and soothe your spirits through the smooth, repeated motions of roller skating so, maybe we should be strapping on the skates and joining the kids while they do lap after lap of the roller rink! Plus roller skating is budget friendly, we spoke to Martin Surman, the owner of Skateaway in Albany Creek “all you really need is a good pair of skates, beginner’s skates start at around $70 and the appropriate safety gear. A helmet, knee and elbow pads and wrist guards are recommended to the beginning skater, since falls could, and usually do, happen!” Skating is a fun way to burn calories and lose weight, so go ahead and give it a try; you might even forget you’re getting a work out! Cardiovascular exercise has the stigma of being drudgery, not a fun activity, but, this is not always the case. Roller skating is a perfect example of a fun form of cardio exercise. Many of us can remember those days of skating for hours as kids. It wasn’t exercise, it was fun! Developing the habit of daily cardiovascular exercise is important for our kids and when the activity is fun, it becomes easier for them to form those habits. Kids are more likely to work out for longer periods of time when the activity is enjoyable and that makes skating perfect to get the kids off the couch and getting their heart rates up and pumping without them even realizing it! Roller skating is a great form of exercise for people of all ages to add to their regular physical activity program to add a bit of fun and diversity. Roller skating is a fabulous muscle toning activity and burns

A LABOUR OF LOVE A new and exciting not-for-profit community arts association has formed in Queensland with a commitment to foster, support and promote artists from the Queensland labour movement, appropriately titled artslabour. The formation of artslabour was inspired by Michelle McJannett who first floated the idea of bringing together like-minded friends around this innovative endeavour. It is planned to take the joyful experience of seeing an art exhibition to the regional, rural and remote people of Queensland. Martin Galleries in Nundah Village will host the launch of artslabour’s first exhibition on Thursday 10th December with a night of art and music that will delight Brisbane’s art lovers. The first exhibition will include some of Queensland’s best loved artists, including furniture artisan Will Marx , David Hinchliffe, Cathy Bevis, Ray Marx, Pete Martin, Lucretia Suciu, Ian Grieve and Judy HallGrieve, Indigenous artist Arone Meeks and emerging artist Aleah Cullen. “This exhibition will be a treat for art lovers with a diversity of artistic styles, including pieces of Will’s extraordinarily beautiful furniture,” Michelle said. Further exhibitions are scheduled for the Valentine’s weekend next year, aptly titled “Artistic Labour of Love” and another to be held during the Brisbane Festival in September 2010. Guests at the launch of artslabour exhibition on Thursday 10 December at 7pm will have an opportunity to meet and talk directly to the artists about the artwork you are buying or bidding for at auction throughout the evening. We will be treated to live music while enjoying the exhibition. A bar will be available for drinks and cheese platters will be served. Martin Galleries is located in Aspinall Street in the heart of the Nundah Village precinct. Parking is available nearby and the Nundah Train Station is a short walk from the gallery. To attend this fabulous exhibition, please rsvp to artslabour@gobusinessau.com, call Michelle McJannett on 07 3325 3200 or the gallery on 3266 8450. DECREASE YOUR STRESS Article by Merendi Leverett-Bowler Accredited Exercise Physiologist GradDipHSc(ExRehab), BHMSc, AEP, MAAESS Many people want to know how to decrease the amount of stress in their life! My only suggestion is quit your job and run to the hills! Yes, I know easier said then done! But I can give you 5 easy steps you can implement throughout your week to help you manage the current stressors in your life. 1. Take time out for yourself – Within today’s society we are often working long hours and spending most of our time pleasing others or doing things for others. Once a week or once a month take time out on your own or with a friend or partner to do something you enjoy. E.g. reading a book, a hot bath, a game of golf, lazy afternoon in the hammock reading the paper, a massage or beauty treatment (no waxing!) This timeout however long will help you recharge those batteries and any stress you thought was major, may now seem quite insignificant. 2. Play Music – As the old saying goes “music soothes the savage beast”. Try ‘relaxation’ music if you want to truly relax. Or choose your favourite style or band and turn it up loud when cleaning the house or having a shower/bath. Maybe you are one of those ‘closet’ singers – let you hair down when no one is around. Music allows you to escape the daily grind and most times music you enjoy, makes you feel better and of course this assists in decreasing those stress levels. “Classical” music is great for stimulating the brain, whilst ‘relaxation’ music helps to decrease stress. If you want try having a ‘roster’ so that everyone in the office gets the chance to have their preferred music style heard. Alternatively in my office, one of my staff puts earphones on and listens to her CDs via her computer. 3. Participate in Exercise &/or Physical Activity – yes the dreaded word! Everyone knows that exercise helps decrease stress by reducing cortisol (a stress hormone) and increase the good happy chemicals endorphins, which are responsible for making you feel happy. And when you feel happy and less stressed, you are more productive! So make sure you exercise at least 3 times a week. To encourage yourself to exercise wear a pedometer and see how many steps you can record each week and make a competition of it, and offer yourself a reward for reaching your goal. Or maybe join a sports team (if that is something that entices you). There are heaps of sporting competitions and local community fundraisers that involve exercise (fun runs, bike rides etc). Alternatively you could join us at Merendi Health & Wellness with many classes to choose from, we are sure to have something that suits you needs. start your own staff walking or exercise group before or after work. You and your staff could have someone come to the workplace to conduct fitness classes or personal training. The ideas are endless. Encouraging your staff to take part in some form of exercise is also good for building team morale. 4. Relaxation/Meditation – Yes very hippy like, but honestly it works. Whether it is attending a Yoga or Pilates class. After 1hr you feel so much more relaxed and or course the stress. Stretching helps relax your muscles and subsequently you. Why not try Meditation, some Yoga classes offer 15min meditation after the class or alternatively you may wish to attend a workshop that shows you many different ways to meditate. Meditation helps clear you mind and prepares you mentally to manage your stress. 5. Have Fun! – This is the most important of all. To reduce stress, why not be social. Whether it is meeting friends at a local café, hosting a BBQ or picnic, or just taking the kids to the park or beach. It does not have to be too flash. Remember not to work too much, especially if you run your own business. This is often the reason a lot of people suffer from high stress, as they don’t spend enough time enjoying life, as they should! Final word, if you or someone you know is starting to show real signs of stress, for e.g. increased lethargy, regular days off due to sickness or stress, increased occurrences of illness or reducing social interaction, it might be worthwhile to call our team of experts at Merendi to help you get to the root of the problem. We have many different services and programs that can assist in dealing with stress, decreasing incidence of illness and improving energy levels. Call us today on 1300 881 536 for a FREE no obligation health assessment to get yourself back on track to better health and wellness.

PARENTS SURVIVAL GUIDE TO SCHOOLIES By Bec Kerta

So your Schoolie is finally heading off for a well earned break? This is great for them but what about you? How are parents meant to prepare for an event that many will have us believe is a toxic mix of thousand of school leavers, alcohol bingeing, volatile behaviour and predatory “toolies”? We spoke to parents and teens to get their personal stories of schoolies week. We spoke with Carrie whose daughter went to schoolies week last year about her experience. “You’re letting her go to Schoolies?”, “I lost count of how many times I heard that question, but we evaluated the pro’s and cons of letting her go, had family discussions about the issues facing our teenager when Schoolies go to the Gold Coast. What it really came down to was that as her parents it was our job to make sure she had the skills and good judgement to deal with these issues. Most of these young people are turning 18 and if they have ever been out on a Saturday night have most likely experienced a fight and witnessed someone passed out because of drinking too much. They know what can go wrong because they have seen it before; educate them on the security of staying with a group of good friends and watching out for each other. School is behind these young adults, they will now carve their paths. This is a time when as parents we must realise and celebrate our children as adults”. Carrie’s daughter had a fantastic time at Schoolies and managed to avoid any serious incidents by following a few basic guidelines given by her parents. Getting the balance between allowing your kids the freedom to celebrate their hard work in year 12 and ensuring you mange to retain even a small piece of mind is a bit of a juggling act so here are some Schoolies Survival Tips to share with them; •

Make sure they are travelling with a good group of friends. If one member of the group gets into a risky situation they will be there to get them home safe.

Ask them to do a risk assessment of the area they are in, if the vibe is uneasy or dangerous then they should look for another venue to carry on their festivities.

A fight in a crowd is like a magnet; it draws everyone in to watch and then spills everywhere. Brawling is one of the biggest problems at schoolies week and we all know that just one punch can kill. Explain to your teens the advantages of walking off rather than taking the bait – an awesome trip to remember forever, not a week spent in I.C.U.

Predatory behaviour is prevalent at schoolies events so talk about safe sex practices and the importance of not getting caught in a isolated location with someone they don’t know, staying with their friends means staying safe.

Ensure your kids know that they can contact you at any time for whatever reason if they feel unsure or unsafe. Getting them to check in with you at regular intervals will also ensure you get some sleep!

Now we have educated our teens and armed them the best we can with advice we must trust them, trust that we have done our jobs at raising independent, decent young adults and they will appreciate that trust. On your teens return from schoolies maybe they will have some great stories to tell as did Luke who travelled to Surfers Paradise for Schoolies 2009. “Schoolies was something we had planned together as a group since Year 10. Surfers Paradise was our destination, the Schoolies Central of Australia. We were staying at a hotel right near the centre of the action. We had little sleep, going to bed really late along with getting up early so as not to miss any of the action! The whole time we felt really safe, due to the high security of at our hotel and the high police presence. The focus of our trip was Evolution, the schoolies-only drug and alcohol free dance party. It was an awesome night. We also did the theme parks, Dreamworld and Wet ‘n’ Wild. The beach was great place too; catching a few waves, kicking the footy. We met many other schoolies revellers. Living off junk food was the norm for us, as we only had shared cooking facilities, and quite frankly none of us has any cooking talent. Although, we did manage to get a decent feed at cafes a couple of nights. The day we left for home was quite sad, and we slept the whole way home. I’m glad I took the trip, despite my parents at first being against it. One of the best weeks of fun I’ve had in my life - a once in a lifetime.”

As genuine as Paolo, its Roman owner, Paolo’s caters for the lunch and dinner crowds of the inner northern suburbs, presenting a delicious selection of pastas, seafood and other Italian themed dishes. A main feature at Paolo’s is the blackboard, which is updated daily with a selection of Paolo’s favourite recipes such as the Spaghetti Cartoccio which is a seafood marinara in baking paper from $29.50, as well as other combinations incorporating rabbit, fish, poultry and much more. Authentic Italian Dining If you want a truly authentic Italian dining experience than look no further than Grappino’s Trattoria Ristorante in Paddington. Opening in 2004, Grappino’s is a bustling place where your visit is filled with the laughter of family and friends. There is no fuss about the meals, they are simple and delicious. Chef Theodore Roduner believes in the simplicity of cooking with a loving respect for nature and creating dishes with passion and inspiration. We decided to sample Chef Roduner’s specialty, Pasta Marinara served with house made Gnocchi. While we waited in anticipation for our meal we relaxed and enjoyed the almost festive atmosphere of the busy restaurant where diners laugh and share food and the busy staff remains friendly and efficient. Our meal arrives along with a bottle of red imported from Tuscany. The pasta looks and smells sensational and tastes superb! It’s flavorsome and hearty. The generous serving of seafood is succulent and cooked perfectly and the wine selection by Theodore blends with the flavors perfectly, the whole visit was a culinary delight! To entice North Brisbane’s corporate clientele to his trattoria Theodor informed us of a new lunch promotion “Bring your colleges or friends at lunch time Tuesday to Friday and you’ll choose any dish from our mains menu plus enjoy a glass of wine or fine Italian beer then finish with any of Grappino’s Italian desserts or imported Italian cheese plates”. We think the traditional office lunch is about to get a little more exciting around Paddington! Grappino Trattoria Ristorante is located at 226 Given Terrace, Paddington. P: 33670033

Grilld, the way a burger should be Burgers usually conjure up images of soggy buns and limp lettuce leaves encasing a somewhat dodgy looking patty so when I was asked to review a burger restaurant my enthusiasm was not at it’s usual high, oh was I wrong! Upon entering Grill’d Burgers at Rosalie my mood was instantly lifted and a sense of anticipation started to build. The restaurants colourful and trendy décor accessorised with bright murals and features does not resembled the average burger bar. Just reading the extensive gourmet menu, including beer and wine, you realise that the Grill’d concept of burgers is new and totally fresh. Grill’d pride itself on offering a healthy burger alternative. Lean meats, fresh ingredients and low-sugar buns that are low on grease and high on flavour. There are beef, chicken, lamb and vegetarian burger options, plus the essential hot chips. The Kids are catered for as well with the “Mini Moo” and “Mini Me” packs. We ordered our meals from the friendly and helpful counter staff and sat in the comfortable Al Fresco area watching the world go by while we waited. From the minute our meals where served and our first bites taken we were disciples to the Grill’d Gods, our commandment; All burgers are not created equal! The burgers were divine. Fresh and colourful and very tasty, the marinated meat was tender and perfectly cooked and we were left satisified without the usual bloated feeling. The full menu is extensive, offering regular burger options like the Simply Grill’d ($7.90), as well as more sophisticated tastes such as the Grill’d Bird & Brie ($10.90) or Moroccan Lamb ($11.50) all available on either the traditional bun or Panini and with a gluten-free option ($1.50 extra). Open 7 days a week and fully licensed, for a refreshingly healthy dining out option for the whole family, get Grill’d! Grill’d is located at 19-21 Nash Street, Bardon (Rosalie Village) P: 3367 1555

Obesity, alcohol, depression interlinked in women By Anne Harding NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Alcohol abuse, obesity and depression seem to go hand in hand for many women, according to the first study to look at how the three relate to one another over time in young adults. Dr. Carolyn A. McCarty of Seattle Children’s Research Institute and her colleagues also found that almost half of the men and women in their study suffered from at least one of these problems between the ages of 21 and 30. “That’s big,” McCarty told Reuters Health, and is likely only “the tip of the iceberg,” because she and her colleagues used fairly stringent definitions of alcohol abuse, depression and obesity in their study. The young men and women in the current study have been followed since 1985, when they were in fifth grade. McCarty and her team looked at data from interviews conducted when the study participants were 24, 27 and 30 years old to understand the interrelationships among depression, obesity and alcohol use disorders. At age 21, 8 percent of women and 12 percent of men had at least two of the three problems. Over time, having more than one of the problems became more common for women, but less so for men. For men, the only association the researchers saw was for obese 27-year-olds, who were less likely to be depressed at age 30. But women who were depressed at 27 were more

than three times as likely to meet criteria for alcohol abuse or dependence at age 30. Women who had alcohol use problems at 24 were nearly four times as likely to be obese at 27, while being obese at age 27 more than doubled the risk of depression at 30. And lower-income individuals of both sexes were at greater risk of depression and obesity. A tendency to “ruminative coping”-in which a person replays and obsesses about negative events-may be one of the traits that links alcohol abuse, obesity and depression, McCarty noted in an interview. Dr. Susan Nolen-Hoeksma, a psychologist at Yale, has referred to the three as a “toxic triangle” of “eating, drinking and overthinking,” the researcher added, and has shown that women-and men-who ruminate are more depressed and more likely to drink or to binge eat to cope with emotional problems. There are interventions that target all three legs of this toxic triangle, McCarty said, including physical exercise, mindfulness training, and stress management. Strategies for treating depression, alcohol use problems, and obesity-all of which are characterized by problems with the brain’s “reward system”--also need to help people find alternatives to rewarding themselves with food or alcohol, she added. “We have to think about how people can start to build in naturally rewarding experiences in their lives,” she said.

Whole grains may help keep blood pressure in check

By Anne Harding

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Eating lots of whole grains could ward off high blood pressure, according to a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. In the study, men with the highest whole-grain consumption were 19 percent less likely to develop high blood pressure than men who ate the least amount of whole grains. While refining grains removes their outer coating, whole grains retain their bran and germ, so they are richer in many nutrients, Dr. Alan J. Flint of the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston and his colleagues note in their report. The most recent US guidelines recommend that people get at least 3 ounces, or 85 grams, of whole grains daily, and that they consume at least half of their grains as whole grains. There’s evidence, the investigators note, that women who eat more whole grains are less likely to develop high blood pressure, also called hypertension, but there is less information on how whole grains might affect men’s heart health. To investigate, Flint and his team looked at data from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, which has followed 51,529 men since 1986, when the study participants were 40 to 75 years old. They looked at a subset of 31,684 men free of hypertension, cancer, stroke or heart disease at the study’s outset. During 18 years of follow-up, 9,227 of them developed hypertension. The men in the top fifth of whole grain consumption, who averaged about 52 grams daily, were 19 percent less likely than the men in the bottom fifth, who ate an average of about 3 grams of whole grains daily, to develop hypertension during follow-up. When the researchers looked at separate components of whole grains, only bran showed an independent relationship with hypertension risk, with men who consumed the most at 15 percent lower risk of hypertension than men who ate the least. However, the researchers note, the amount of bran in the men’s diet was relatively small compared to their total intake of whole grain and cereal fiber. The relationship between whole grain intake and hypertension risk remained even after accounting for men’s fruit and vegetable intake, use of vitamins, amount of physical activity, and whether or not they were screened for high cholesterol. This suggests that the association was independent of these markers of a healthy lifestyle behavior pattern. It’s possible, the researchers say, that the men who ate more whole grains gained less weight over time. The current findings, Flint and colleagues conclude, “have implications for future dietary guidelines and for the prevention of hypertension.”

The Sugar Sensitive Child By Skye Robinson (Local Expert)

Restless, disruptive, impulsive and poor concentration. These are key traits of a sugar sensitive child. A piece of birthday cake and they are literally running in circles or an iceblock turns your child from normal to overdrive. This is no fun for the parent and it may surprise you, but the child doesn’t like it either. Yes, they love the sweet treat but their behaviour becomes more than they can handle. Similar to the Hulk, ‘you won’t like me when I’m angry.’ As the hulk transforms despite his protests, the sugar sensitive child cannot control their actions when they eat sugar foods. This is a physical reaction not a mental choice to misbehave. A sugar sensitive child cannot keep sugar in the blood stream and use it at an even level over an extended period of time. Instead, all the sugar is absorbed at once; giving the incredible sugar high, and once that has worn off, the sugar high crashes and with it the child. Therefore, a sugar sensitive child has no happy medium of energy expenditure – it is either all or nothing. This is where the diet comes into play. It is possible that you could be contributing to this rollercoaster behaviour without knowing it. Common foods such as cornflakes, packaged snacks (eg, roll-up,

LCM or fruit sticks), poppers, white bread sandwich, yogurts, pasta bakes and ice cream, are all high in sugar. This doesn’t seem like a bad diet, however if you feed this food to a sugar sensitive child, you’ve fed him/her about 8 tablespoons of sugar a day, and their body is only half the size of an adult. Sugar isn’t the only culprit. Other offending foods are colourings, additives, preservatives and salicylates. These have a similar effect on the body and the behavioural consequences. However they can also contribute to skin rashes, headaches, stomach aches and pains and mouth ulcers. Discovering the individual foods that irritate your child could give your child a new lease on life, which is great parenting. This topic is discussed in more depth on Friday 27 November at my clinic in Eatons Hill between 10am-11am. For $15 you’ll receive an information pack full of relevant info, light refreshments, the opportunity to discuss this with a Naturopath and other parents in similar circumstances. It is a child-friendly environment, especially sugar-sensitive children welcome. For more info visit www.skyenaturopath.com or phone Skye on 0438 821 283. I’d love to see you there.

A constructive alliance is forecast for you from the 15th. But you need to be consistent in the way you deal with people at this time as you’re likely to blow hot and cold. This alliance may be with members of your family, some friend or perhaps even a complete stranger. As I said, consistency will be the foundation of success and once you decide on your course of action you must not take “no” for an answer. Persistence will pay off.

It is an important time to re-configure and decompress your most important relationships this month and from the 4th till the 9th you will be spending a good deal of time talking about how you feel and how you can improve those most dear relationships. Around the 5th you will e called away to do work which could intrude upon these discussions and you must not be seen to be slacking off or losing interest. Re-assert your commitment at this time.

A romantic attachment is likely to arise in your workplace or with someone you least expect this month. The period of the 9th till the 15th is particularly highlighted. You need to be clear in your intentions and ask the other person to state their case. Initially, this may all be guesswork and superimposing of your feelings on each other. This will make it awfully difficult to work with your concentration levels being deluded by the distraction of loving eyes staring at you from the corner of the office.

You may want to overindulge your desires this month and that may be obvious between the 7th and the 11th. Self-restraint will still allow you to have sufficient fun without the after-effects of too much food, sex or alcohol. The temptation may be there but you’re wiser for resisting that temptation to go over the edge. Apart from that, your wallet probably can’t afford it. Some good karma will come your way as a result of your extending yourself to those in need between the 18th and the 21st.

Nervous tension early your savings, taxes and other investment portfolios will cause you to lose sleep and distracted from other important work this month. Speculations after the 9th likely to be hasty and ill advised. You may be listening to the wrong people when it comes to making a quick buck. Remember that unless you carefully analyse the markets, study business and investments diligently, it is good as gambling.

Between the 10th and the 15th, you may be subtlety concerned about how you are coming across to the world around you. There’s a vague dissatisfaction that you haven’t yet achieved everything you want to achieve but remember - Rome wasn’t built in a day. Exercise patience and enjoy the journey of life otherwise you’ll miss what’s happening now and that is as beautiful as what you hope to achieve in the future. Remain philosophical this month and you’ll be a lot happier.

The three most powerful forces in nature are money, sex and power. These three superpowers may form the basis of some type of emotional manipulation which you mustn’t let undermine what is otherwise a loving and nurturing relationship. Between the 3rd and the 5th, you’ll note that these energies dominate the situation and could cause a rift between you and your spouse, partner or close friend. Don’t let your bad moods be the trigger for them using emotional blackmail on you.

Avoid financial arguments at all costs this month. There’s got to be a better way, Scorpio. Mars, moving through your zone of finances, income and material values, can be problematic but only if you get too emotionally involved and reactive about other people’s opinions. Between the 1st and the 7th, you’ll need to set aside ample time to carefully assess your position and the position of someone else you either live or work closely with.

There’s nothing worse than feeling obscure or unnoticed. Between the 1st and the 4th, you may feel a little under the weather in this respect, but you mustn’t for a minute assume that if you’re not invited to some function that it’s because you’ve done something wrong. The reasons may not be clear but don’t beat yourself up over it. This cycle will pass fairly quickly and things will get back to normal.

Venus on the 8th moves back into your professional zone, your area of self-esteem and your ego, indicating a boost to your public persona and the way others see you. You may choose to change your wardrobe, enhance your elegance and make others take note of you for who you are, not so much for what you do. You’re still likely to do good work, and to bring to your activities a touch of style and creativity, which Venus is well known for.

Venus re-enters your zone this month. This means that a postponement or situation you thought may have been lost may return and give you a second bite at the cherry, so to speak. This could also be favourable news for a sibling or someone close to you such as a relative or neighbour. There could be cause for celebration and a toasting of the champagne glasses around this time. Finally, it’s important for you to put to bed any private concerns you have relating to health.

Travels are on the cards this month. If inappropriate lunch breaks haven’t added up to enough of what you’d consider reasonable time out, you need to split and head for the hills. If you have a committed partner, they may also be feeling the same and this is a great time to scat! Go and spend some time on a beach doing nothing, or better still have a few cosy, candle-lit, romantic dinners whiling the time away.

Passive work means less activity off the job, too By Anne Harding NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Do you have an unchallenging job with little control over what you do? You may be more likely to be a couch potato in your leisure time, a new study shows. "These characteristics of the job spill over into their non-working life," says Dr. David Gimeno of University College London, one of the researchers on the study. Gimeno and his colleagues looked at how working in "passive jobs"-where the worker has little stress and little control-affected leisure time activity by looking at 4,291 male and 1,794 female British civil servants, who ranged in age from 35 to 55. Over a five-year period, the study participants were categorized at three different time points based on how passive their jobs were and their amount of leisure-time physical activity. Job passivity didn't influence how active women were outside work. But men who were in passive jobs at all three time points were 16 percent more likely to have low levels of leisure time physical activity than men who had never worked in a passive job. "These are very small effects," Gimeno said in an interview. Nevertheless, he added, they are likely to affect many, many people-resulting in a large health impact for society as a whole. Given the health risks of a sedentary lifestyle, he and his colleagues note in Occupational and Environmental Medicine, "upstream interventions that reduce dull, demotivating and unchallenging jobs may be worthy of consideration." Evidence on how the nature of a person's job affects his or her leisure-time physical activity has been mixed, Gimeno and his team note, and research has not looked at how a person's job characteristics over time might affect their lifestyle. "We need to consider what type of jobs we are creating," the researcher added. "That doesn't mean that everyone needs to be an artist." But, Gimeno said, it does mean that people should have opportunities to develop on the job, gain knowledge, and increase their skills. "You need people not only to be like machines and only do the work, but also to grow in the work."

Aging heart can be prevented in mice HONG KONG (Reuters) - Scientists in Japan said they have uncovered evidence, based on mouse studies, that shows it may be possible to delay or prevent heart failure in humans. In a paper published in the journal Circulation, Tetsuo Shioi, lead researcher and assistant professor of medicine at Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine in Kyoto, and his team described how they managed to suppress a variety of the P13K gene in a group of elderly mice. The gene regulates the lifespan of cells and plays a role in the aging of tissues. In previous studies, suppression of this gene extended the lifespan of the roundworm and kept the hearts of old fruit flies healthy. Compared with another group of mice in which the gene was left intact, mice with the suppressed gene had improved cardiac function, less fibrosis (which makes the heart inflexible) and fewer biological markers of aging. "This study showed that aging of the heart can be prevented by modifying the function of insulin and paves the way to preventing age-associated susceptibility to heart failure," Shioi said. Old age is a major risk factor for heart failure, a condition when the heart is unable to pump enough blood around to supply the oxygen the body needs, the World Health Organisation says. According to the American Heart Association, 5.7 million Americans have heart failure, and nearly 10 out of every 1,000 people over age 65 suffer heart failure every year. Mariell Jessup, professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia, said older people experience a slow but gradual loss of heart cells and a host of other cellular abnormalities which make the remaining cells contract less efficiently. "This early work in a mouse model, clarifying the role of PI3K in cardiac aging, could ultimately allow scientists to understand if human hearts are similarly influenced," he said. As mammals, mice are considered a good surrogate for studies of human diseases and conditions; their body plan, physiology and genome share many features with humans.

READY, SET, MO: GRILL’D ROSALIE IS FEEDING THE MAN BEHIND THE MO Grill’d Ascot owner, Jason Payne, admits his upper lip is twitching in anticipation as he gets ready to once again “feed the man behind the mo”. Movember is here again and the healthy burger restaurant is supporting the charity to help tackle men’s health issues and be proactive in the fight against depression and prostate cancer. Grill’d restaurants are aiming to help raise a heap of much-needed cash for Movember and will be offering all registered Mo Bros one free burger per day from 10-22 November. All a Mo Bro needs to do is register at movember.com.au, start growing a moustache from 1 November, raise $25 and receive a special Movember email instructing how to get their hands on a Grill’d ‘Tash Ticket’ that entitles them to free burgers. Mo Bros can proudly display their mos and Tash Ticket at any Grill’d restaurant between 2-4pm or 8-10pm each day to claim their burger. Now that’s what we call a mo-mentous offer! Jason said he’s more than happy to take a bite out of profits next month in support of men’s health issues. “Grill’d has been supporting Movember since 2006, and every year it gets bigger and better. It’s really satisfying to be a part of such a worthwhile charity, have fun along the way and reward all the Mo Bros raising money for the cause,” Jason said. “We’re offering one burger per day for each person and we expect to give out 1000 free burgers during the promotion.” Jason and his male staff will start growing and shaping their mos from 1 November, but he says the challenge is still open for the best Mo Bro to come forward. “I challenge all of our male customers to embrace their manhood and get growing. Last year, it was entertaining to see the different mo styles, so I expect to see more handle bars, trucker and pencil moustaches this year too.” This year, Grill’d is aiming for the 30 Grill’d restaurants to collectively give away over 30,000 burgers to Tash Ticket holders. Movember is now six years old and to date, has raised AU$62 million globally. In 2009, proceeds will go to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and beyondblue - the national depression initiative. If you’re the social type, check out mogrilld.com.au, follow Grill’d on Twitter at @GrilldBurgers or become a fan on Facebook to keep updated on all Grill’d Movember news and views. Men often not told of prostate cancer risks: study CHICAGO (Reuters) - Doctors do not involve men enough in discussions about whether to undergo screening for prostate cancer, U.S. researchers reported on Monday. They said while many doctors agree that men need to understand the risks and benefits of screening for prostate cancer, only 69.9 percent of men in a survey said their doctors discussed screening with them beforehand. Of those, 71 percent were told about the benefits of screening -- catching a cancer early -- but only 32 percent were told of the risks, such as being treated for a slow-growing cancer that might never cause harm. “Our findings suggest patients need a greater level of involvement in screening discussions and to be better informed about prostate cancer screening issues,” Dr. Richard Hoffman of New Mexico Veterans Affairs Health Care System and colleagues wrote in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Doctors have routinely recommended prostate cancer screening in men over 50 based on the assumption that early diagnosis and treatment is better than doing nothing. The screening uses a blood test that looks for a protein called prostate-cancer specific antigen, or PSA. But there is little evidence that widespread PSA testing saves lives, Hoffman and colleagues wrote. A study last month in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found routine screening for prostate cancer resulted in more than one million U.S. men being diagnosed with tumors who might otherwise have suffered no ill effects from them. All standard forms of treatment -- surgery, radiation or hormone therapy -- can cause harm, often resulting in impotence and incontinence. Most professional guidelines say doctors should discuss the risks of screening for prostate cancer with their patients. Hoffman and colleagues looked to see if that was taking place. They studied results of a nationally representative telephone survey done in 2006 and 2007 that included 375 men who had either undergone or discussed PSA testing with their doctors in the previous two years. Overall, they found 69.9 percent had discussed screening, including 14.4 percent who chose not to be tested. Most often, doctors raised the topic of screening, and 73.4 percent recommended it. Only 32 percent reported having discussed the cons of screening, such as the side effects of treatment. The researchers said the findings were based on patients’ recollections but they double checked with doctors to see if they were accurate. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men worldwide after lung cancer, killing 254,000 men a year.

Moderate exercise may lower prostate cancer risk NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Ready for another reason to exercise? Men who exercise at even moderate levels may have a lower risk of prostate cancer than sedentary men, a new study suggests. Exercise has been shown to have numerous health benefits, but studies have come to conflicting conclusions as to whether a lower risk of prostate cancer is one of them. In this latest study, researchers found that among 190 men who underwent biopsies to detect possible prostate cancer, those who regularly exercised were less likely to be diagnosed with the disease. Men who exercised moderately -- the equivalent of three or more hours of brisk walking per week -- were two-thirds less likely than their sedentary counterparts to have prostate cancer. What’s more, among men who did have cancer, those who reported as little as one hour of walking per week were less likely to have aggressive, faster-growing cancer. Dr. Jodi A. Antonelli and colleagues at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, report the findings in the Journal of Urology. There are a number of reasons to believe that exercise could help ward off prostate cancer. For one, physical activity tends to lower levels of testosterone and other hormones that help feed prostate tumor growth. Exercise may also bolster the immune system, which, by killing off abnormal cells before tumors can develop, is one of the body’s lines of defense against cancer. But while the current findings add weight to the idea that exercise protects against prostate cancer, they do not prove that it does, the researchers stress. “It is impossible to state that exercise alone was responsible for the benefits we observed because participants who exercised might also have engaged in other behaviors linked to better health, like adhering to good diet,” Antonelli explained in a written statement. The findings are based on 190 men who were referred for a prostate biopsy after screening suggested that they may have cancer. Biopsy confirmed cancer in 79 men, or 42 percent. Most of the men were not getting enough exercise, with 58 percent considered sedentary. Meanwhile, 17 percent were considered highly active -- getting the equivalent of at least 6 hours of walking per week. The rest were mildly to moderately active. Regular exercise remained linked to a lower risk of prostate cancer even after the researchers factored in a number of other variables -- including age, weight, race and the presence of any other medical conditions. They call for more studies to answer the question of whether lower prostate cancer risk should be added to the list of health benefits from exercise.

For a long life choose an educated wife By Anne Harding

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Bachelors take note: If you want to enjoy a long life, marry a highly educated woman. In a study, researchers found that a woman’s education was a stronger factor in her husband’s risk of dying over the next decade or so than the man’s own level of education. And a husband’s social class based on his occupation had a greater influence on a woman’s survival than her own occupational class, Drs. Robert Erikson and Jenny Torssander of the Swedish Institute for Social Research in Stockholm found. Living with a partner is known to reduce a person’s risk of dying early, Erikson noted in an interview with Reuters Health. And the current study, he added, suggests that one’s choice of life partner may be an important part of the equation. The effect of a partner’s social status is multidimensional, the researcher pointed out, with education, income, occupation and status each having an independent effect. Erikson and Torssander looked at 1990 census data on more than 1.5 million employed men and women, 30 to 59 years old, who were living with a partner, along with cause of death data for the period 1991 to 2003. As expected, for both men and women mortality was higher for less educated people and for those who made less money, while lower social status and working in a lower-level occupation were also tied to a greater risk of death. Men who hadn’t reached high school were 1.1 times more likely to die during follow-up than men who’d finished college. But the education of a man’s partner had a stronger effect than his own schooling; men living with a woman without any high school education were 1.25 times more likely to die than men living with a college graduate. The effect of women’s education on their own mortality was strong too. But while a woman’s own occupational class had little effect on her risk of death, women married to unskilled manual and routine non-manual laborers were 1.25 times more likely to die than women whose partners were in higher managerial and professional occupations. Men’s social class had less of an effect when the researchers accounted for income, the researchers note, while income was important in mortality for both women and men. “This points very clearly to material conditions in the household,” Erikson said. As far as women’s education, Erikson and Torssander note in their report, “women traditionally take more responsibility for the home than men do, and, as a consequence, women’s education might be more important for the family’s lifestyle -- for example, in terms of food habits -- than men’s education.” Erikson added: “We can assume that more highly educated women have better possibilities to find the important health messages that are around...There are lots of health messages in the media and I think some of them are important and some are just misleading.”
