Betty Broderick exacts marital fury in second ‘Dirty John’ series

As the adage says, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned ... and Betty Broderick is a textbook example.

Played by Meredith Baxter in two early-1990s TV-movies, Broderick famously wrought vengeance on her San Diego-lawyer husband Dan after he left her for another woman. What initially seemed like immature vandalism eventually became something much more lethal, and the true story gets a new and very detailed dramatization over the eight episodes of the second season of “Dirty John,” which USA Network debuts Tuesday, June 2 (after the first, podcast-inspired “Dirty John” series ran on Bravo).

Amanda Peet (“Brockmire,” “Togetherness”) and Tiera Skovbye (“Riverdale”) portray Betty at different ages, as she supports Dan (Christian Slater, returning to USA after his “Mr. Robot” run) through his medical and legal schooling and the starts of their family and his career. The union disintegrates rather rapidly once he meets Linda Kolkena (Rachel Keller, “Legion”), prompting Betty to strike back – a situation that ultimately results in a double homicide.

Playing Broderick as alternately high-spirited and desperate, and sometimes both at once, Peet says that the project gives “a very complex psychological portrait that allows for the idea that there probably was mental illness, but also that there were incidents in the marriage and the legal system made

it very difficult for her to remain healthy.”

The Betty Broderick-themed season of “Dirty John” boasts an all-female team of directors, including its writer and executive producer, Alexandra Cunningham.

Peet admits that she didn’t know much about Broderick before reading Cunningham’s teleplay, “and I think that was probably a good thing. It seemed to me to just be an intimate portrait of someone who, after so many years of suffering, sort of snapped.”

Depicting that required Peet and Slater to be very much in sync, with the series’ timeline going back and forth continually. “I just can’t rave about him enough,” she says.

“Besides being a brilliant actor, he’s a class act as a human being, really fun and so considerate. I can’t believe he’s been a star for this long and is so thoughtful and kind ... no offense to anyone else!”

After writing two stage plays, Peet currently is working with her writer-producer husband David Benioff (“Game of Thrones”) on Netflix’s forthcoming, Sandra Ohstarring university comedy-drama “The Chair.” Peet co-created it and is doing the bulk of its scripts, but she’s still grateful to land acting parts including Betty Broderick (who has been denied parole three times, and is next eligible in 2032).

“To have a role like this at age 48 is a gift and an honor,” Peet reflects.

“And the fact that Alexandra picked me for it still blows my mind.”

Turner Classic Movies is spending much of June celebrating all that jazz ... and then some.

The channel is going all-in on a “Jazz in Film” series that features related attractions on both Mondays and Thursdays (and into the early hours of the following day) throughout the month. In some cases, the jazz world might not be the essence of the given movie’s plot, but the soundtrack unmistakably reflects the genre – often demonstrated by some of cinema’s greatest composers.

Here’s a look at several of the literally jazzed-up highlights: “Bullitt” (1968; Tuesday, June 2, 3:30 a.m. ET): As famous for when it doesn’t use Lalo Schifrin’s music as when it does – particularly during the classic car chase midway through the movie – one of the screen’s best police dramas includes a scene set in a San Francisco jazz club, as the title detective (Steve McQueen) enjoys a rare moment of “down” time with his girlfriend (Jacqueline Bisset).

With fan support again waning at the start of the 2000s, Johnson focused on acting with such movies as “The Mummy Returns,” “The Scorpion King,” “The Rundown” and a remake of “Walking Tall.” He returned occasionally for WWE appearances, but having lengthened his film resume with “Gridiron Gang,” “The Game Plan” and “Get Smart” (among other titles), he officially retired from wrestling in 2019.

Johnson now is a top box-office attraction, thanks partially to his role as Luke Hobbs in the “Fast & Furious” franchise. His other projects have included “Baywatch,” the “Jumanji” reboots, “San Andreas,” “Skyscraper,” “Rampage” and (also as producer) “Fighting With My Family.” He’ll be seen next year in the Disney-produced “Jungle Cruise.”

On television, Johnson spent five seasons as an executive producer and the star of the HBO comedy series “Ballers.” Currently, he’s hosting the second season of the NBC competition series “The Titan Games,” on which he’s also an executive producer.

Johnson has a daughter from a former marriage and two children with his second wife.

Dwayne Douglas Johnson was born May 2, 1972, in Hayward, Calif. His father, Rocky Johnson, was a former pro wrestler (as was his grandfather, Peter Maivia). During his youth, Johnson was well-traveled. He lived in New Zealand briefly, then in Charlotte, N.C. From there, he moved to Hamden, Conn. – and then to Honolulu, Nashville and Bethlehem, Pa. Though he had several run-ins with the law (and several arrests) in his teens, Johnson was a hot football prospect, accepting a full scholarship from the University of Miami. He played with the Miami Hurricanes during their early-1990s championship seasons, but injuries eventually sidelined him. He graduated with a degree in criminology and physiology.

Johnson joined the Calgary Stampeders as a linebacker, but after being cut soon afterward, he went into professional wrestling ... ultimately signing with the World Wrestling Federation. After competing under a couple of other names, he adopted the handle “The Rock” and began to turn around fans’ negative reaction to him as he faced rivals including Stone Cold Steve Austin, Mankind, Big Show and Triple H.

OF ‘JEOPARDY!’ IN SYNDICATION What is your favorite part of hosting “Jeopardy!”?

One of the first times I watched it, I watched with my family, and none of them have a background in comic books. And the fact that all of them understood it and knew what was going on ... I got excited. You don’t have to read comics to enjoy the show.

I mean, you can’t find any better environment in which to work than hosting a program like “Jeopardy!” It’s the very best kind of reality television.

“DC’s Stargirl” is so physical for you that, though you have backgrounds in cheerleading and gymnastics, how do you manage your regimen to keep in shape for all that you have to do in the series?

How do you assess your long run on “Jeopardy!”?

There are some individuals who could have been named as host of “Jeopardy!,” and if the show had lasted 36 years (as it has with Trebek), they would be enjoying the same kind of favorable reviews and adulation that I have enjoyed in recent years.

I love them. They’re so awesome, both on- and offscreen. It’s really cool to watch my relationship with Luke throughout the season as it evolves; we’re both from Texas, so we kind of bonded over that.

We hadn’t known each other before, but by the end of (filming) the season, we were just so close that if I had a scene with Luke, I knew it was going to work. It was just cool to have that.

You get to be just like, “Really? People live like this?”

It was very provincial and very beautiful. The fort is amazing. I was near the museum so that was really lovely. I would go in quite often to the museum down near the water.

There’s lots of walking and it’s just beautiful. And of course, I got to try my French, which some people were open to (laughs) and some people were not. Like you could say a word that would mean exactly the same thing in English and they would be

like, “Ne comprends pas.” I just don’t understand. I think (they) understood.

But for the most part, I found it really beautiful. It’s got exquisite, exquisite restaurants and I loved being up there.

I love to travel. I am a big travel fiend, I just love it.

You’re working with two acting veterans in “DC’s Stargirl” co-stars Luke Wilson and Amy Smart. How have you found them to be?

Fortunately, I love working out. Right before we started this, I’d do two workouts a day; I’d do cardio, then I also started doing kickboxing. Once we started production, I’d work a 17-hour day, so I didn’t really want to go home and work out after that. ... but I felt I was in such good shape before it, I was able to retain enough throughout the season.

I don’t want to minimize it, but my health situation has contributed to that a great deal, because the pity factor – as I mentioned during the Daytime Emmys – is out there, and people have been so kind, sending prayers and good thoughts and all of that, so I’m not unaware of that. There are a lot of great game-show hosts who have been on television in America over the decades, and a lot of their success depended on the success of the show.

Well, “Jeopardy!” has not only been part of America’s television life for so long, it’s been a part of my television life for a long time. And as I mention to people quite often, we’re always trying to push the envelope and do something a little different, something a little more advanced, either from a technical point of view or from a content point of view.

Since “DC’s Stargirl” is derived from DC Comics, do you think a prior knowledge of the character is necessary in watching the series?

I tell audiences who come to our tapings that the thing I enjoy most about the show is the 30 minutes I spend onstage with the contestants, because I love spending time with bright people. I hate spending time with stupid people.

TV dining – A feast of restaurant sitcoms and dramas Going out to eat is one of life’s great pleasures.

Whether it’s fine dining, a quick burger or something in between, there is something about being out and dining on food made by others that is an utterly satisfying experience. And the fact that people are waiting on you helps, too.

These days, however, that favorite American pastime has fallen by the wayside, the victim of the pandemic that has forced closures of restaurants. But let’s not dwell on that. Instead, let’s live vicariously through our televisions, watching series set in and around restaurants, where people are out and about and enjoying themselves – just as we hope to be soon.

“Alice” (1976-85, CBS): Based on the 1974 film “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore,” this long-lived sitcom starred Linda Lavin in the title role of a widow who with her young son relocates to the Phoenix area and takes a job as a waitress at a greasy spoon called Mel’s Diner.

Polly Holiday, who’s character Flo coined the catchphrase “kiss my grits!” also starred along with Vic Tayback, Beth Howland and Philip McKeon.

“Cheers” (1982-93, NBC): Yes, the meals consumed here were more liquid in nature but the Boston bar “where everybody knows your name” was a ratings dynamo for many years and a fixture at the Emmys and Golden Globes.

It also gave big boosts to the careers of Ted Danson, Shelley Long, Kelsey Grammer, Woody Harrelson and Kirstie Alley and was just a

downright friendly place to spend 30 minutes on a Thursday night.

“Tattinger’s” (1988-89, NBC): This wellreviewed hour drama about a popular New York eatery had the acting talent (Stephen Collins, Blythe Danner, Jerry Stiller) and the production lineage (the “St. Elsewhere” team of Tom Fontana, John Masius and Bruce Paltrow) but couldn’t translate that into ratings and thus disappeared after one season.

“Party Down” (2009-10, Starz): Adam Scott, Jane Lynch, Lizzy Caplan and Ken Marino headed the talented cast of this underrated sitcom about a group of Los Angeles actors, writers and lost souls working part-time gigs as caterers while waiting for their big break in Hollywood.

“Bob’s Burgers” (2011-present, Fox): Loren Bouchard, mentor of the current “Central Park,” created this animated comedy that follows the adventures of the Belcher family, who own and operate a burger joint in an unnamed seaside community. A perennial contender at the Emmys, the show’s voice cast includes H. Jon Benjamin, Dan Mintz, John Roberts and Kristen Schaal.

“Fresh Off the Boat” (2015-20, ABC): Before she rose to stardom in “Crazy Rich Asians,” Constance Wu was in the ensemble of this recently concluded sitcom about a TaiwaneseAmerican family who run a cowboy-themed restaurant in Orlando, Fla., in the late ‘90s.
