‘Shameless’ – No more Gallaghers

It’s three days after “Shameless” wrapped filming after 11 seasons and reality hasn’t completely set in yet for Jeremy Allen White.

Yes, in his mind he knows the Showtime dramedy is no longer and so is his character of brilliant though troubled oldest male sibling Phillip “Lip” Gallagher. And thanks to the pandemic there was no formal wrap party to put a coda to things, just a small dinner outside series star William H. Macy’s house for cast and producers.

That became their official farewell to one another.

The series returns for its 132nd and final chapter Sunday, April 11, marking a farewell to the rough-and-tumble Gallagher clan of Chicago’s South Side.

The finale, which executive producer John Wells has hinted will be more just another day in the life rather than a conclusion, finds White’s Lip settling for a new job, Debbie (Emma Kenney) facing a dangerous new world and Carl (Ethan Cutkosky) finding a purpose with the police force. Elsewhere, Kev and V (Steve Howey, Shanola Hampton) look to sell the Alibi while Ian and Mickey (Cameron Monaghan, Noel Fisher) are in a buying mood, going furniture shopping. And Frank (Macy), struggling with dementia, faces his mortality.

For White, his 11 years on “Shameless” represents a significant chunk of his life. He

Now 30, he’s taken somewhat of a parallel journey with the character, having gotten married and become a father for the first time. Of course, he never sold pot out of an ice cream truck, gone into rehab or gotten kicked out of college as did Lip, but he did learn a lot about himself as an actor and a person. In some ways, he looks up to Lip. “At that point in my life when I was 18,” White reflects, “there was just like this idea of maybe who I wanted to be when I was older and I think I got to put a lot of that into Lip ... . So in those first couple of years, there was like this fun thing where Lip got to say all the things that I wish I could have said or he got to do some of the things that Jeremy never had the courage to do. And I think that never really stopped.

You know, I think I got to kind of live vicariously through Lip, which was a blast.”

As for what he’ll miss most about “Shameless,” White says it’s the companionship.

“I’m never really going to grow the way I have on this show, on another show,” he says. “And while I’m hopeful about the sort of like richness and full relationships I could have on other jobs in the future, I just don’t know if it’s in the cards to have the same experience. ... I know that this was special and it won’t happen quite like this again.”

The show’s true life force, though, came from leading lady Melanie Scrofano, whose portrayal of the title character has been a peppery joy from start to finish.

This colorful 2011 animated fantasy reunites — vocally, anyway — Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg, who played siblings on “Get Real” before their movie fame. A macaw (voice by Eisenberg) is taken to Brazil, potentially to mate with another of the last of their kind (voice by Hathaway). As might be expected, it’s not that simple. George Lopez, Jane Lynch and Jamie Foxx are also heard.

JANNEY Allison Brooks Janney was born on Nov. 19, 1959, in Boston. The daughter of a former actress and a real-estate developer and jazz musician, she is one of three siblings (one of her two brothers passed away).

Though Janney initially aimed for a career in figure skating, her height and an accident negated that. She began pursuing acting at Ohio’s Kenyon College, and Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward were early mentors to her. She then studied at New York’s Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre, and she earned a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. After spending most of the 1990s doing various roles in movies (“Big Night,” “The Ice Storm,” “Primary Colors,” “Drop Dead Gorgeous,” “American

Beauty”) and television series (“Law & Order,” “Guiding Light,” “New York Undercover”), Janney landed a major TV part as White House Press Secretary C.J. Cregg on “The West Wing.” The role brought her four Primetime Emmy Awards, among many other honors.

During her run on “The West Wing,” Janney also stayed busy with film work ... “Nurse Betty,” “Finding Nemo” (voice only), “How to Deal” and “Strangers With Candy” being some of the examples.

For eight seasons, Janney has starred in the CBS comedy show “Mom,” for which she has earned two Primetime Emmy Awards. After going the past year without founding fellow star Anna Faris, it will air its series finale May 13.

‘The Masked Singer’ continues to draw stars and viewers Whether you’re wearing a mask, guessing who’s behind a mask or simply observing it all, “The Masked Singer” has been a “win” for all concerned.

Currently airing its fifth season Wednesdays, the Fox competition series has been one of the network’s top success stories of recent years ... even more valuable to Fox since its separation from most of its formerly related television properties, now owned by Disney. Kermit the Frog (yes, really) and Caitlyn Jenner have been among the elaborately costumed celebrities revealed in this round, and the regular cast members believe they know why the show works for those on both sides of the screen.

“We’ve never been on a set where we’ve had so much love and support,” says Ken Jeong, who’s also a panelist on Fox’s “The Masked Dancer” spinoff series. “The producers will do a completely edited package for each panelist, and whether they’ll bring in friends and family and old highlight clips, it’s just for us. It’s not for

public consumption, and it’s not just for shallow morale. It really is just how much we genuinely love and support each other, especially during these times. It’s the best TV job I’ve ever had.”

In terms of playing the game, fellow panelist Jenny McCarthy reflects of the already taped fifth season, “There were celebrities that were on this show that I thought would never be on ‘The Masked Singer’ ... so, to me, that was gamechanging alone. I was like, ‘No way. This person? They are on our show?’ Even though I feel like that every season, this one really blew my mind.”

Panelist Robin Thicke attests that “it’s gotten harder” to guess the masked singers’ identities, “and this season, we are pretty much inadequate in most ways. Jenny studies hard on the clues. Ken gets lucky because every dog has their day. And Nicole (Scherzinger) and I usually get close after a few listens, but this first-impression guess has made us all challenged.”
