BEAUTIFUL BAKERSFIELD
T
he Greater Bakersfield Chamber has hosted the community’s own Academy Awards-style event – the Beautiful Bakersfield Awards Gala – for nearly three decades. The awards celebrate the people, projects, businesses and organizations that better our community each year. Eleven categories – ranging from architecture to art to education to health – will be judged by community members. Five other categories – Nonprofit, Corporation, Small Business, Business Person of the Year and Lifetime Achievement – will be judged by the Chamber’s Executive Board of Directors. Nominations must be submitted by Friday, Feb. 7. Forms can be found on bakochamber.com. Awards are based on work that occurred or was completed in 2019. Winners will be announced at an awards gala on Saturday, June 6, at Mechanics Bank Theater and Convention Center.

LEADERSHIP BAKERSFIELD Education Day
"On November 15, Leadership Bakersfield participants were able to hear from local Superintendents, students and school administrators about current challenges facing schools in Bakersfield. They heard how local leaders are creating an atmosphere of continuous improvement to provide an equitable education. Participants learned that local school districts analyze their data in order to identify student populations that are under performing. Resources are then provided for both educational and socio-emotional supports to help all students prepare for a transition into college and/or a career. In Bakersfield, that has meant an emphasis on serving socioeconomically disadvantaged students, students with disabilities, English language learners, homeless students, and foster students among others. The day started with Superintendents Doctor Barlow, Doc Ervin, Doctor Schaefer, and Doctor Westendorf sharing their passion for education, personal leadership journey, and their thoughts on equity and serving vulnerable student populations. They highlighted the strides their districts made in closing the achievement gap, despite a shortage of qualified METRO | PAGE 10
teachers, due to an initiative called the Kern County Education Pledge. This Pledge is a community wide approach that brings schools, institutions of higher education, and employers together to prepare all Kern County students for college and career. While en route to the Bakersfield Adult School, participants rode a school bus and heard about the challenges of getting students to school in such a large geographic area; especially for students such as foster and homeless youth where long rides to their school of origin are not uncommon. At the Bakersfield Adult School, participants were able to hear from current students, tour the campus, and learned about the programs that serve adults wishing to further their education. The group then visited the Claude W. Richardson Center; a preschool for developmentally disabled children that provides school readiness services to assure students with disabilities are as prepared as possible for that first day of kindergarten. Their next stop took participants to new heights. While touring North High’s, Aeronautics Program, participants were able to test their own skills using a flight simulator. Participants then heard from a panel of foster youth leaders in the Youth Empowering Success (YES) program. YES was created to give foster youth a voice in their
school and provide additional socioemotional supports to improve student attendance and academic outcomes. Their presentation and personal stories of resilience did not leave a dry eye in the room and highlighted the power of schools providing additional support services for youth who have experienced trauma. The trip to North High ended with a panel of administrators from Kern High, CSUB, Bakersfield College and Youth2Leaders sharing their stories of leading student support programs and how their institutions serve vulnerable student groups to improve academic outcomes and provide access to higher education.
LEADERSHIP BAKERSFIELD The day ended at Bakersfield College’s (BC) Launch Pad, where aspiring entrepreneurs can come for assistance with business development matters, such as business plans and marketing strategies. Director Tony Cordova gave a presentation on the services that are available and emphasized that the Launchpad is open to anyone in the community seeking help opening their own business. Doctor Rob Arias, Kern County Superintendent of Schools’ Chief Deputy of Local and Statewide Initiatives, wrapped up the day by discussing more specifics of the Kern Education Pledge and his views on the importance of leaders bringing clarity around goals and initiatives when addressing student needs. While participants were able to visit and learn about a variety of local educational facilities and programs, one common thread ran through the day Superintendents, College Presidents, and employers in Kern are committed to the pledge and provide pathways to college and career for all students!"
