History and Architecture
Hotel “Evropa,” the pioneer of modern hotels in Sarajevo, materialized in 1882 under the vision of Gligorije Jeftanović, also known as “Zenđil Sarajlija.” The architect Karlo Paržik crafted the hotel, which officially opened its doors on December 12, 1882.
The Story of Hotel Europe
The Golden Book bears the signature of Tito, marking his inaugural visit to the hotel. Accompanied by dignitaries such as Edvard Kardelj, the deputy Prime Minister of Yugoslavia, and Jawaharlal Nehru, the Indian Prime Minister, Tito frequented the hotel, relishing traditional dishes like pasulj, uštipci, tufahija, and pancakes. Hotel Europe played host to luminaries, including Yugoslavian author and diplomat Ivo Andrić, who found inspiration in room 701 amidst the exquisite surroundings of Baščaršija and Trebević.
During the past conflict, the hotel suffered extensive devastation. The restoration efforts commenced in 2007, spearheaded by Sarajevo architect Sead Gološ. The color of the façade was chosen through a voting process facilitated at a stand in front of the hotel, engaging the citizens of Sarajevo in the decision-making. Following the meticulous renovation, the hotel proudly reopened its doors on December 12, 2008, coinciding with its 126th anniversary.
