There are many differing views on what makes someone an entrepreneur and what is an entrepreneurial venture. In a sense the definition itself is evolving as the field itself comes into the mainstream of American business. While we speak of many of the originators of businesses in the past as entrepreneurs, it was not until the mid1970 that the concept became a prevalent enough part of our economy that definitions even were necessary. Consequently, we see in the literature a wide variety of possibilities for what this field really is. Looking online, the Hypertext OnlineWebster defines an entrepreneur as “one who creates a product on his own account.” That sounds a trifle stuffy, is very limited and doesn't fit for many of the people widely known as entrepreneurs. Does just creating a product make you entrepreneurial if you never do anything with it? What if you take someone's product and make it a success? That is not entrepreneurial? Investorwords, a set of definitions of financial terms, defines an entrepreneur as “an individual who starts his/her own business.” At what point then are you no longer an entrepreneur? When are you no longer starting up? From The International Society of Entrepreneurs comes another Webster definition: “a person who organizes and manages a business undertaking, assuming all the risk for the sake of the profit.” Assuming risk certainly fits most entrepreneurs. This definition is definitely richer, but assumes that the motivation is purely profit. Moving from formal definitions, Ashoka, an organization that promotes social change, calls for “social entrepreneurs,” people who open up major new

possibilities in education, health, the environment, and other areas of human need, “just as business entrepreneurs lead innovation in commerce, social entrepreneurs drive social change.” The concept of business entrepreneurs leading innovation is appealing because it denotes more than just starting a business. An entrepreneur herself, Daile Tucker, provides her thoughts on what it takes to be an entrepreneur in “Are You an Entrepreneur?” She defines an entrepreneur as “a person who has decided to take control of his future and become self-employed whether by creating his own unique business or working as a member of a team, as in multi-level marketing.” She identifies work ethics and several character traits of successful entrepreneurs, ending with “Entrepreneurs compete with themselves and believe that success or failure lies within their personal control or influence.” This begins to touch on motivational aspects for being an entrepreneur that may distinguish the type of person drawn to being an entrepreneur. In an Entrepreneur Magazine feature article in 1995, Dare to Be Different, Gayle Sato Stoddard takes Tucker's definition a step further, acknowledging innovation, but also providing alternatives. Stoddard suggests that to be an entrepreneur you don't particularly have to be daring. Many entrepreneurs are perfectly content to sell tried-and-true products, bringing a steady income without the intensity of launching a new product. She labels these “lifestyle entrepreneurs.” They want to be their own boss and make a good living, but they don't need to be on the cutting edge. Many such people buy franchises or an established business.

OCTOBER 2015 An Academic Perspective Our academic colleagues have become much more interested in entrepreneurism as a viable field of study in the past 15 years. Much of the impetus for this interest is laid at the feet of David Birch of MIT who in 1979 shocked the academic world with his research indicating that the Fortune 500 had stopped creating jobs. According to Birch, the source of new jobs now came from what he called “growth companies” - what are now called entrepreneurial ventures. Current research looks at more precisely defining entrepreneurs and what makes them successful. For example, Michigan State University in a study entitled “The Guiding Principles for Entrepreneurial Success” identifies Entering entrepreneurs (private owners and heads of non-subsidiary manufacturing companies with annual sales under $2.5 million), Emerging entrepreneurs (private owners and heads of nonsubsidiary manufacturing companies with growth rates of at least 20% and annual sales of between $2.5 million and $20 million), and Emergent entrepreneurs (private owners and heads of non-subsidiary manufacturing companies with growth rates of at least 20% and annual sales of at least $30 million). Their study is concerned with what factors influence an entrepreneur's success at crossing the barrier into becoming an Emergent entrepreneur. In other words, why do some entrepreneurs stall out and eventually fail and why do some eventually succeed. The other aspect of their study of interest is that it has the beginnings of a handle on how long remains an entrepreneur. The limiting factor of this study is that not all entrepreneurs are in manufacturing - and certainly $2.5 million is a large number for many of us not in the manufacturing business. Different milestones may apply for different types of entrepreneurial ventures, but there do seem to be definitive stages one goes through in an entrepreneurial venture.

Definition Revisited.” They based their work on a five stage model, from Existence to Maturity, focusing primarily on the first three stages: Existence- “the period when the venture is developing products and/or services, finding customers, operating as a simple flat organization,” usually lasting from 0-3 years, Survival – “the stage at which the organization is delivering product, becoming more concerned with cash flow and revenue generation while producing marginal returns,” usually between years 1-5, and Success – “the stage at which the organization has established a market position and is achieving at- or above-market returns,” usually from 3-10 years. They, too, are interested in what takes an organization over the wall between these stages - why some fail and some succeed. Both these studies indicate there is a success point when the company evolves into a more traditional business model. So entrepreneurism can be considered, by these models, as limited either by failure or by the success of the company in that it either goes out of business or becomes a mature company. Many of these companies at the point of maturity worry about losing their entrepreneurial spirit. Many larger corporations with a long period of maturity experience the same fear. From that has evolved intrapreneurship, nurturing of innovation within large corporations, another new field of study and development. The goal is to continue the “spirit of entrepreneurism” into the maturity phase of a business.

Harvard professors Hart, Stevenson and Dial also looked at success in entrepreneurship in “Entrepreneurship: A

The Evolution of the Professional Entrepreneur Tom Richman in “Creators of the New Economy” hypothesizes that what has really occurred is that entrepreneurism has changed dramatically from amateurism to what he terms the professional entrepreneur.

The clear conclusion from all this is that entrepreneurism is a dynamic, developing part of the economy at this time in history. Entrepreneurism itself is emerging and maturing. What it will be as a mature contributor to the economy is yet to be determined, but certainly innovation, knowledge and globalization are important factors.

What he is seeing is an evolution in entrepreneurism, not only because motivation from downsizing is putting more talented people out of work, but also because of the opportunities available from globalization and the virtual marketplace. Many very skilled people are joining the entrepreneurial ranks, raising the level of business knowledge and skill.

To quote Tom O'Malia from his introduction to the book, Been There, Done That, “Entrepreneurs are about loving their journey, not their destination.” For me, this sums up the excitement and fun of being an entrepreneur. And that is why it is not synonymous with being a small businessperson. The entrepreneurial mind set can operate in all sizes and types of businesses.

He distinguishes the following differences between the two: www.bajansunonline.com/MAGAZINE/ | info@bajansunonline.com | @BajanSunOnline

Have you noticed how life occurs in spirals? By Norma T. Hollis I started studying the spirals in life about 20 years ago when I became a labyrinth facilitator. A labyrinth is a walking meditation tool that dates back at least to Ancient Egypt. A labyrinth is often confused with a maze although it is actually the opposite of a maze. A maze is a confusing path and at each step you might find yourself at a blocked wall. A labyrinth is one long path that twists and turns. If you just follow the path you will eventually find yourself in the center, then you can follow the path back out again. As you walk a labyrinth it is said that you strengthen your connection to spirit. No one knows exactly why this is but the speculation is that the spirals are the reason. As you walk a labyrinth and make twisting

turns to follow the path you are actually making spiral turns.

Spirals seem to be one of the mysteries in the world. Within humans, we can see spirals in our brain, intestines and even in our DNA. We also see spirals in other parts of life such as the Milky Way. I've also read books and articles that talk about life and time asking the question of whether time is linear or spiral. In other words, do we as humans follow a straight line of time from millenniums ago to the future or is time simply a spiral where we repeat certain aspects of life from time to time.

www.bajansunonline.com/MAGAZINE/ | info@bajansunonline.com | @BajanSunOnline

Spirals in Nature

These are questions to ponder if you are interested in deepening your understanding of how life works. It becomes more meaningful when you actually take a walk on a labyrinth and deepen your spiritual connection. I became a labyrinth facilitator in 1996. Since that time I have made labyrinths and even designed a few. The labyrinth that I made and use is painted on a 30' x 30' canvas. It travels with me to enhance some speaking engagements or when a group just wants a labyrinth walk.

In 1996 I had the opportunity to introduce the labyrinth to the Los Angeles community. Since then we have conducted labyrinth walks multiple times. If you have not yet walked a labyrinth, do a search to see where one is located in your community. Come and walk the spirals and see how your life is impacted. Some people who walk the labyrinth receive answers for questions they have been pondering for years. It's the magic of the spirals. Come and experience it for yourself.

Whether you walk a labyrinth or not, consider the spirals in your life. Are certain patterns repeating? Do these patterns serve you or is it time to make a change? If you see that you are repeating certain patterns that keep spiraling in your life, remember that you have the power to make a change. Walking a labyrinth is a great way to discover the path to appropriate change.

I hope you find a labyrinth and enjoy the walk!

The Gun Hill Signal Station

The Gun Hill Signal Station is strategically perched on a hilltop in the parish of St. George and is one of the six (6) signal stations erected across Barbados after the 1816 Slave Rebellion. This 19th century signal station arguably offers the best views of the entire island of Barbados and contains a captivating collection of military memorabilia. When it was known as Briggs Hill, it was named as one of the four points where guns were to be placed to give alarm in the event of an invasion.

OCTOBER 2015 Under this oversized lion, there is an inscription with the sculptor's name and a verse from the Vulgate Latin translation of the Bible. Translated in English, it means 'He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river, unto the ends of the earth'. Clearly this speaks to the magnitude of authority the British had over Barbados and the world. The Lion at Gun Hill and the Signal Station are very easy to find. Using St George Parish Church as a major landmark, the attraction is a mere five minutes’ drive up the hill on the left-hand side of the road after passing the church. Signs are clearly visible along the route.

OCTOBER 2015 As of mid 2000, the population of Barbados was recorded at some 274,540. The diverse ancestry of the island attributes to its current unique cultural blend which includes Arawak Indians, British settlers, European Indentured Slaves, African Slaves and East Indians. Overall, the people of Barbados (or Bajans as we are known) are quite friendly; so fitting in with locals will lend itself quite easily to your peace of mind.

Barbados is an island of the Lesser Antilles, 21 miles in length, as much as 14 miles in width and divided into 11 parishes. It is located at 13.4N, 15.4W. The island is situated in the western area of the North Atlantic Ocean and 100 kilometers east of the Windward Islands and the Caribbean Sea. Barbados is relatively flat with the exception of one major high point, Mount Hillaby, which measures approximately 1,115 feet or some 343 metres above sea level. The west coast of Barbados offers calm, clear water which is quite conducive to your many beach activities; while the east coast opens up beautifully to crashing waves and an environment that is more suited to sun bathing, walking, jogging, surfing and even meditation.

The Tourism Industry in Barbados is impetus for the economic development on the island as it has impacted significantly on the lives of all Barbadians. It is a very vital aspect of the economy of Barbados and it is always within our best interest to ensure that your comfort and safety is first and foremost. Despite this, we still strongly recommend you exercise caution with regards to your valuables and even frequenting certain areas.

Barbados is awash with history, the arts, nightlife, fine dining, and even luxury living. Getting around the island is a ‘breeze’ (pun intended) as options are somewhat endless when it comes to your choice of transportation. The people of Barbados are quite helpful when it comes to giving assistance with regards to making your way around the island. The main language of Barbados is English but bajan dialect (broken English) is widely spoken as it is almost a natural way of life. We can’t promise you that you will always be able to make complete sense of what the people of Barbados have to say; but, we recommend you give it a listen and even a try, as it will only augur well to adding a ‘sunshine feel’ to your stay on the island. www.bajansunonline.com/MAGAZINE/ | info@bajansunonline.com | @BajanSunOnline

OCTOBER 2015 Communicating effectively and appropriately for the workplace is also an essential part of professionalism. Regardless of the job or industry, professionalism is easy to spot. On a construction site or in a trade, a professional worker will work hard and manage time effectively, including arriving and returning on time from breaks. A professional worker in a customer service setting will speak clearly and politely to customers and colleagues and have neat and clean appearance. In an

As such, Jerome committed himself to studying the most popular training concepts and testing them on his clients to determine which ones worked most effectively. After a couple years of combining concepts and experimenting, Jerome created his own training style which can be modified to fit any body type. Most of his clients see him on average two or three times a week at their home or office, as his business goes where ever the client is interested in being trained. Needless to say, most of Jerome’s clients train at home. Given his passion to share knowledge, Jerome educates his clients on not only proper nutrition but how to train on their own with minimum equipment, which is always a hit as his clients wouldn't have to further expense themselves. The service Jerome and by extension PPCF offers covers everything from when to train, target setting and constant assessments to see what works and what is not working.

Over the years Jerome have found that consistency is the main reason people stop training. In response to this, Jerome has devised a strategy which works and works well. The workouts in this strategy take no longer than 5 to 8 minutes, with minimum equipment requirement. What is more is that, the results from this method have been nothing short of outstanding and Jerome’s clients love it. Short intense workouts work great especially when combined with adequate nutrition. More importantly, this method has been such a hit that his clients have encouraged him to do a fitness app which is called the ‘8 Min Burn’, carded to be released August 2014. All in all Jerome ensures that his clients are happy and see results quickly. In his words “it doesn't matter if my clients are vacationing in France or staying in a beach house on the east coast. If they or the general population want a workout or tips on everything from how to acquire muscle, lose weight or get stronger, they can do so by visiting this facebook link: http://www.facebook.com/ provenphysique.” Jerome is looking forward to hearing from you soon so that he can help you achieve your best ‘bod’ ever!

THE BUSY MAN'S WORKOUT The most successful people know that exercise is the key to mentally and physically pushing themselves further, though some are more willing to keep up the habit than others.

most important habits you can develop to transform your life. Working out can make you healthier, happier, and better able to sleep; it can boost your memory, concentration, and mental sharpness; and you don't need to spend a lot of time doing it to reap the benefits.

Can you visualize the body you desire? Can you see yourself stepping on your scale and attaining that first 20lbs. in weight loss? If not, we have some work to do.

As I mentioned in my last article covering the busy man's workout, today's man is over-worked and

underpaid. The ability to have consistent, sweat-pouring workouts that don't take time away from enhancing your job or business are key.

I'd like you to develop what I call a "short-term physique goal". This goal should be 100% attainable. For example, a 2-5lb. weight loss would be a great short -term physique goal for someone looking to lose that belly fat.

Also important, these workouts need to excite the nervous system and leave you with MORE energy for your day rather than drain your energy resources. For fast

OCTOBER 2015

3. the right mindset The mindset with which you approach your goal has a great deal to do with the end result of that goal. In fact, sometimes the mindset is the sole influence to the outcome of the event. Take chess for example. Chess is largely a battle of strategy, yet many people disregard the confidence required to be a great chess player. In fact, this type of confidence is important for anyone wanting to make a great attempt at any goal. However, I use chess as an example because it has few outside elements that could effect the results. It's one of the rare examples that is almost completely dependent on a single skill...the ability to analyze moves ahead of time and counter your opponents moves. 4. get an accountability partner Let's face it, there are times when you just don't feel like pursuing your goals. Everyone has this feeling at some point in their life no matter how worthy their goals may be. When it comes to getting in your workout, the mere thought of pain alone can deter you from getting started. However, the major attribute that separates a very successful person in the pursuit of any goal from their unsuccessful counterparts is a very simple one. This attribute is the ability to press on through hardships when most people would either give up or lose interest in the goal. 5. the ANT mentality Have you ever had experience with fire ants? Unless you have lived in Florida or some other sub-tropical region, chances are you have never seen how ferocious these tiny creatures are. As a teenager in Florida I would occasionally set fire to ant piles (yes, I was a mischievous kid). However, these weren't ordinary ants. I could literally have just set fire to an ant pile only to come back a few hours

later to see the damage completely erased by worker ants. The speed and cohesion demonstrated by the fire ants was mind-boggling. It didn't matter what distraction, injury, or resistance you gave them...they are the ultimate army of workers. What's even more amazing is the amount of progress these ants could make in a few hours. We are talking about the collective progress of hundreds of thousands of little, efficient workers. Do you think you could mirror this example given by nature? Do you think that you could exhibit such focus in your daily activities that nothing could get in your way of the end result? Just imagine if you could!!! The obvious takeaway is that if you approach your daily goals (especially your workouts) like an ant would approach their work, you will run over your competition and achieve anything you have scheduled. You will meet your goals with such power that anything attempting to stand in your way will succumb to your efforts. Even your biggest barrier will have no choice but to move the hell out of your way. Your biggest barrier is, of coarse, your own thoughts of DOUBT and PROCRASTINATION. In conclusion, the ANT mentality is nothing more than pressing on to your goals no matter who or what may get in your way. If you have ever set out toward a certain goal and taken the time to write down some sort of plan, chances are that your goal is worthy enough to focus all your energy and efforts on. We frequently question the worthiness of a goal many times during it's pursuit. THIS procrastination...this entertainment of doubtful ideas is what must die a quick death if we wish to take hold of our plans to change our physiques and head full steam ahead.

EAT YOUR WAY TO BEAUTIFUL SKIN

There's an important connection between what you eat and how you look. Learn which foods help you look your best. A balanced diet is an essential prescription for healthy and vibrant skin. The good news is that the foods that happen to be good for your skin are also good for your overall health. Many people find that the appearance of aging skin — wrinkles, thickening, discoloration, and decreased elasticity — is one of their biggest beauty concerns. While genetics largely determines when your skin starts to show these signs of aging, and the extent to

which it shows them, environmental damage to your skin, as well as damage you cause yourself through lifestyle choices, can greatly accelerate this process. Skin damage occurs as a result of oxidation, a chemical process in which unstable molecules called free radicals steal electrons from healthy cells. The most damaging oxidative stressors that we expose ourselves to are smoking and sunlight.

OCTOBER 2015 Aside from staying away from cigarettes and using sunscreen when you go out, the next best thing you can do for your skin's health is to eat a diet rich in antioxidants. These are nutrients that work to defend your body's cells — including skin cells — against the damage of oxidative stress. You're probably familiar with some antioxidants, such as vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, and vitamin A (in the form of beta-carotene). Others, which you may be less familiar with, are collectively known asphytochemicals (there are hundreds of them), and they are found in foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and beans. To keep your skin well-protected and nourished, and to extend its youthful appearance, focus on the foods that are good sources of the following nutrients: Vitamin C Vitamin C is involved in the production of collagen (which keeps skin firm) and protects cells from damage caused by free radicals. Scientific studies have found that when lab animals eat vitamin C — fortified food, their skin is better able to fight oxidative damage. It's important, then, to replenish your skin's vitamin C stores every day by eating plenty of fruits and vegetables. Good sources include bell peppers (red, green, and yel-

low), broccoli, cantaloupe, mangoes, oranges, pineapple, snow peas, strawberries, tomatoes, and watermelon. Vitamin E Vitamin E helps protect cell membranes and guards your skin against damage from the sun's UV radiation. Some research has suggested that vitamin E may work in combination with vitamin C to provide an extra degree of anti-aging skin protection. However, because recent studies have raised some questions about the safety of vitamin E supplements, this nutrient should come from your diet, not from high-dose pills. It's best to stick with food sources like wheat germ, fortified wholegrain cereals, nuts and seeds, olive oil, Swiss chard, and spinach, as well as the small amount of vitamin E found in a multivitamin. Beta-carotene Beta-carotene, another antioxidant that's critical for skin health, is converted to vitamin A in the body and is involved in the growth and repair of body tissues. It may also protect your skin against sun damage. In extremely high doses, however, pure vitamin A from supplements can be toxic, so be sure to avoid them unless a doctor has recommended them and is closely supervising you. Beta-carotene from foods like apricots, cantaloupe, carrots, red bell peppers, mangoes, pumpkin, and sweet potato is sufficient and entirely safe for your skin. Selenium Selenium is an antioxidant mineral that helps protect the skin from sun damage; it also helps the skin maintain firmness and elasticity. Selenium obtained from food has been shown to reduce sun damage and even prevent some skin cancers in animals. Be sure to avoid selenium supplements, however. The Nutritional Prevention of Cancer Trial found that people with a high risk of nonmelanoma skin cancers who took selenium supplements actually had a 25 percent increased risk of squamous cell carcinomas. The best food sources for selenium are Brazil nuts (no more than 1 or 2 nuts a day because the selenium is so concentrated), tuna (canned, light), crab, oysters, whole-wheat pasta, lean beef, shrimp, whole-wheat bread, turkey, wheat germ, chicken breast, mushrooms, and eggs.

OCTOBER 2015 Omega–3 Fatty Acids Although not classified as antioxidants, omega–3 fatty acids help maintain cell membranes so that they are effective barriers — allowing water and nutrients in but keeping toxins out. These healthy fats also reduce inflammation throughout the body, which may translate into fewer skin breakouts. Omega-3s also seem to offer the skin protection against sun damage. In a study of skin cancer, people who ate diets rich in fish oils and other omega-3 fats had a 29 percent lower risk of squamous cell skin cancer than those who got very little omega-3 fats from food. Good food sources include wild salmon, herring, mackerel (but not king), sardines, anchovies, flaxseed, walnuts, and soybeans. Read more about Omega-3 Fatty Acids. This

OCTOBER 2015 Q&A with Jamie-Lee Crick, CEO and Founder of Be Distinctly Different: Q: What would you say are some of your greatest challenges as an entrepreneur? A: Initially I was my biggest obstacle, not valuing my time and my work and therefore leaving myself over worked and underpaid. I quickly realised I had to value myself and my work if I wanted to grow my business. Finding the right people to be on your team has also been a great challenge. Q: How have you dealt with your challenges? A: One step at a time. I have found living in the now and taking five deep breaths before responding to issues have been my greatest help when dealing with challenges. This way I quickly go into the mode how can I fix the problem rather than stressing about the problem.

Q: What services can make your tasks easier to execute? A: Administration and accounting would be great to have someone to assist with these tasks and leave me with the time to focus on the job at hand and creating more business. Q: What would you like to achieve in the next 5 years? A: In the next five years I would like to be known as a thought leader in the travel industry; to have grown Be Distinctly Different to the go to travel marketing and management agency in the UK. I would like to have an established portfolio of fantastic clients and engaging projects and finally write a book.

Q: What are some of your achievements within your business? A: We were an integral part in rebranding Prestige Caribbean now Prestige World and taking them from a home based office to now turning over more than a million pounds. Last year we developed and launched the Sri Lanka Training program to UK Travel Market. Rebranding of a small gardening company - Green Rehab to an upmarket landscaping company is also a great achievement. Q: What is the most passionate aspect of your business? A: I am very results driven and feel most passionate when I achieve the results that my clients have requested. I also enjoy bringing a project to fruition, from seeing it on pieces of paper to actuality.

Q: What role has technology played in developing your business? A: Technology is the lifeline of our business. Being a company with a global focus I don't think we would get much done day to day without the use of technology. From client meetings across the globe to simple things like social media, technology has a massive influence on my business. Q: How useful is technology to the Entrepreneur? A: Vital, especially if you are trying to make an impact on a global scale. Technology is a part of our lives and we have to embrace it or end up being left behind. How Is your Game? By Dennis Strong, CMC

and their progress. Achieving par brings a sense of satisfaction, even for the best players in the world. For others, it inspires us to keep trying. Occasionally, we are able to make a shot just like the pros. In Barbados, we claim to want service quality. However, without national standards that are measurable, it is like a golf course without parminiature golf. Many people and organizations consider POLITENESS (the absence of rudeness) to be the standard for service excellence. This definition does not make us globally competitive. To defend and insist upon it makes us look stupid and backward. It is a sure sign that we are not ready for primetime.

It struck me recently that a common greeting around the golf course comes in the form of the question: “How’s you game? The answers given to this question usually disclose that improvement is needed. It doesn’t matter if the person is a very good golfer, just starting, or one with a perpetually mediocre game; we all wish to play better. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we all had the same attitude toward service excellence? Why don’t we? There are some fascinating parallels. For example, in the game golf, the individual interacts with the course and conditions to achieve a specific target called PAR. To achieve par, one must put the ball in the hole within a specified number of strokes. Par for each hole, on each course, is announced and does not change. This allows the players a consistent measure of their ability

Playing at par is a hallmark of consistency reached by a minute percentage of all those who take up the game. Those who play at par or better come from a wide variety of backgrounds and are generally admired for their ability to play at this high level. The phenomenon of Tiger Woods speaks for itself. Woods and all touring professionals practice daily and employ coaches to improve their game. The demand for golf lessons worldwide is increasing at tremendous rate. By contrast, I hear front line service providers responding defensively to any suggestion their game needs to improve. They want recognition but want to set their own terms of performance. Indeed, I have not seen any national awards for service excellence that are linked to measurable,-publicized standards of performance. By rewarding non-performance and using ambivalent criteria, we encourage mediocrity and boast as though it is true excellence. I am all for encouraging improvement but real professionals must demonstrate attention, intention, and consistent performance against a lofty standard. National service quality is directly linked to individual commitments to excellence.

OCTOBER 2015

There are a number of key points to this analogy. It is impossible to have excellence without clear measurable standards. “If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything. Striving to meet unwavering standards is inspirational ,satisfying and humbling Accomplishments against challenging standards bring respect, admiration and other rewards

Excellence requires a personal commitment to learning, continuous improvement and a willingness to admit mistakes.

Anybody can blame others when we fail to perform but the failures will continue until we acknowledge the need for assistance. Practice makes perfect if we are practicing the correct things. Otherwise, we are only perfecting mistakes. Occasional acts of excellence must be transformed into consistent ones to achieve par. The benefits of seeking excellence flow to all aspects of our lives. Excellent golfers have many different approaches to the game according to their mental and physical makeup. What they all have in common is the desire to perform better than par. How is YOUR game?

Choosing the themes and subject matter for your content is a big deal on Instagram, so we’re going to look at it in more detail: Building your Instagram brand Instagram is all about the visuals, so you need to set out to build a cohesive, recognizable brand identity. How you approach your Instagram brand will be influenced by the strategy you have already determined. First, consider the visual style you want for your Instagram brand. Choose one filter or a set of filters that you will use for the majority, if not all of your photos. By using the same filters over and over, you establish a style that will become recognizable to your followers. Since your goal is to get Instagram users to stop scrolling once they see your image (in order to engage with it by liking or commenting), the more instantly recognizable your photos are, the better. Take a look at 33 Acres Brewing Company, which uses white borders and a very white colour pallet in the majority of their Instagram photos. Scrolling through their feed, the style quickly becomes familiar and you start to associate images that meet these characteristics with the brewery. Take a look at 33 Acres Brewing Company, which uses white borders and a very white colour pallet in the majority of their Instagram photos. Scrolling through their feed, the style quickly becomes familiar and you start to associate images that meet these characteristics with the brewery. Other mobile photo editing apps like VSCOcam and Whitagram can provide additional filters or editing options to help you find your style. Photos that have been edited or filtered elsewhere can still be imported into Instagram. Visually, you’ll also need to decide what content your photos will focus on. In some cases, the content will be obvious: a clothing line will shoot photos of clothes, a restaurant will shoot photos of its food. Not all industries have this luxury, but brands from all industries are finding ways to promote themselves through lifestyle content, which seems to connect well with the Instagram audience. You don’t have to be a lifestyle brand to post lifestyle content. Hootsuite is a social media management company, but we share Instagram photos of our staff members, our dogs and our offices, since this represents the character and culture of our business.

If you’re unsure of how to visually represent your own company, monitor the accounts of your followers. Look at what they’re sharing and see if you can identify any trends. Then replicate the visual themes in your own content. An accounting firm might find their followers are very passionate about coffee or cars, and share content from their employees which fits these themes. Or these brands could share their followers’ photos (giving them full credit of course) as a form of user-generated content. Marker company Sharpie uses UGC regularly in their feed, interspersing it with product photos to great effect. The use of UGC and lifestyle content makes those product shorts feel less obtrusive and salesy as a result. Finally, there may be non-visual elements to your Instagram brand, like common language or style for captions. A popular technique used by brands is the branded hashtag. This doesn’t mean simply using your company name as a hashtag (don’t do that). This is about finding a hashtag that embodies your Instagram brand and encouraging followers to share photos that fit that image. Brands receive the benefit of increased exposure to new potential customers, and Instagrammers participate for a chance to be featured on a brand’s profile—as well as the prestige and the increase in followers that accompanies it. Hootsuite’s branded hashtag is #Hootsuitelife. Lululemon Athletica has users tag their workout photos with #thesweatlife, which has generated tens of thousands of posts from their community. Poler Stuff has not one, but four branded hashtags (#campvibes, #adventuremobile, #bagitandtagit and #beneaththebrim). #Adventuremobile isn’t directly related to any of Poler’s products, but it does speak to their brand persona of active, outdoor living. The hashtag has attracted tens of thousands of posts shared by Instagrammers.

Getting started with the app To get started on Instagram, download it to your mobile device from the Apple Store or Google Play (it’s free). You’ll need to sign up, which means choosing a master email and a secure password. Once you’ve entered the app, you’ll be prompted to fill out your profile. Take the time required to optimize it, filling it out completely and professionally.

OCTOBER 2015 Your username and bio: Instagram is one of the simplest social networks when it comes to your bio. Your username, for discoverability, should match the username of your other branded social media profiles. Your real name, in this case, is the company name. The only other information that appears on your public profile is your website (a url, which you can change to promote campaigns or new pieces of content) and a short, 150 character bio. For your bio, since you’re limited in terms of length, keep things straightforward, but not serious. Explain what your business is, what you do and what people can expect from your Instagram profile. It should be light and snappy. It should also include any branded hashtags you want followers to use. Follow Instagram’s instructions on how to edit your Instagram bio. Your profile photo: Your Instagram profile photo should probably be your company’s logo. Having it match your other profile photos will also help with discoverability, since people who follow you on Twitter or Facebook will instantly recognize your brand. Your Instagram profile picture will be cropped into a circle on the app, so make sure you choose an image that will look good in that shape. Though the profile picture will be 110 pixels in diameter on the mobile app, choose a larger image since it will appear larger on the web. Learn how to change your Instagram profile photo. Enable notifications: This is an often overlooked aspect of setting up your profile. You’ll want to enable push notifications from everyone for likes and comments, as well as new followers, Instagram direct activity, and photos of you. These notifications are vital to engagement and any user-generated content campaigns you run. If someone tags your brand in a photo, a push notification puts it on your radar. You can then thank the user, comment or even share their photo as UGC. Notifications will help ensure you don’t neglect your Instagram presence, or the users that follow and engage with you. Follow people: Lastly, to kick off your business’ Instagram presence, you’ll want to follow a bunch of users. Find influencers in your industry, clients and engaging users and follow them. Search relevant industry hashtags and make your presence known by commenting on photos and following people who participate in these discussions. You’d be surprised how quickly this can expand your following on

Instagram. Lastly, add your Instagram handle to your web properties and other social media profiles for cross-promotion. You can also send out a message or two asking your existing following on those networks to also follow you on Instagram. After you’ve created your profile, add Instagram to your Hootsuite account. You can then create a number of streams, including your home feed, hashtag searches, location searches, and your photos. Preparing these streams will set you up to quickly and efficiently tackle anything Instagram throws at you, from day-to-day engagement to integrated social media marketing campaigns.

Posting and engaging Once you’ve set up Instagram, you can start sharing and engaging. Post high-quality images that meet the brand guidelines you’ve established, and do so according to your content calendar. Remember, Instagram is very much a mobile-first platform, so consider that when choosing your photos. Consider how easily your image can be seen on a small screen and try and use high resolution photos. When posting, don’t miss out on opportunities to cross-post your Instagram images. The app allows you to post images directly to Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Flickr and Foursquare. You can also use the Instagram integration to cross-post images through Hootsuite whenever appropriate. Do it. It will help you grow your following by showing existing followers on other social networks that you’re on Instagram. It’s also an easy source of visual content for those social networks. The same premise applies to embedding images from Instagram within your blog posts and websites. If you work in retail, food or any other business that has a physical location, make sure you also tag your photos with that location. This location tag can then be used by users to see other photos from your store or restaurant. In terms of engagement, do your best to reply to comments from followers. Set up relevant search streams within Hootsuite to monitor industry-relevant hashtags, and like and comment on images. Don’t be afraid to follow users who follow you, especially those who clearly put work into their own Instagram presence. These people will be more likely to engage with your brand, and may even provide inspiration for your own posts. All in all, the success of your Instagram account will come down to getting your

OCTOBER 2015 business out there in the community, while ensuring that you acknowledge and thank those engaging with your brand. Pro tip: Don’t automate any of your engagement. I tried it, and it doesn’t work out so well. Instagram analytics As with any social network, you need to be tracking the performance of your Instagram posts. Doing so allows you to see what types of images resonate with your network, so you can always be improving. Instagram analytics will also provide you with the data you need to show stakeholders that you’re achieving the goals you set out in your Instagram strategy. Establish all the metrics you want to track on Instagram and then create a schedule for how often you want to pull that data. Since social media moves quickly, and Instagram trends can change in a short time, you should be checking your Instagram performance at least weekly, if not more, depending on your resources. It’s important to know how your photos are performing early on, since you may want to more actively promote successful images. If you’re looking for analytics for your business’ Instagram account, Iconosquare is a great option. It allows you to track: follower growth your top followers all engagement on your photos your posting history the best time to post photos the lifespan of your photos Icon square is available within the Hootsuite App directory. Using the app you can track many of the above metrics while also viewing your home feed, managing your Instagram community, searching for photos by hashtag and posting Instagram photos to other social networks. Install the Iconosquare app right now.

The unique qualities of your brand’s audience are still important on Instagram. A bank can’t simply mimic Starbucks or Red Bull and expect to gain popularity. Hone in on your audience and build an Instagram brand that really caters to their interests and expectations. Tell a story with your caption. Instagram is a visual social network, so many people end up neglecting the caption, when this is valuable real estate. Captions allow you to expand on the image, give it context and even make your followers laugh (especially if you are proficient in emojis). It can also tie an image back to your business. Instagram is a great platform for contests. Contests can ask users to comment on your photo, share it, mention a certain number of friends, or even share their own photo with a specific hashtag. Many users see these contests as a benefit of following a brand on Instagram, so don’t worry about bothering people. Try out a contest, track the analytics and see how it benefits your brand. Consider collaborating with a popular Instagrammer or influencer in your field or industry. Give them control of your branded account for a day, or ask them to share their thoughts on your brand. This could pay off big time as they expose your brand to their large Instagram community. While many influencers will charge a pretty penny for their services, even small and medium businesses can use this tactic by giving away their product or using local influencers. Though it isn’t yet available to all brands, Instagram is progressively rolling out its advertising platform. Thus far, the results have been impressive. Across more than 475 global campaigns, ad recall from sponsored posts on Instagram was 2.9x higher than Nielsen’s norms for online advertising. This will be something to consider once Instagram opens up its advertising options to all businesses.

Of course we have a number of response options to choose from when this happens; these responses include sulking, anger, withdrawal or understanding. While unresolved issues, buried anger, hidden affairs, relationship neglect and a failure to communicate will most certainly be felt all the way in the bedroom, quite often, desire differences can be a consequence of other factors. A simple request by a woman to talk, can also be a roundabout invitation to pleasure-land, since most of us want to also experience a strong emotional connection. Many men who dread communicating with

their women, miss the opportunity to turn talk into great sex.

OCTOBER 2015 4. In the general scheme of things where meeting our partner’s sexual needs is concerned, selfishness is perhaps the greatest enemy. Being tuned in only to our own needs and concerns means that we care very little about our partner’s. So focusing on our tiredness, our bad day, our feelings, our sex drive or lack thereof, will cause us to deliberately ignore or see as unimportant, the body language of our partner which is screaming at us “make love to me”.

Ultimately, understanding why our sexual groove with our partner may be out of sync, is the first step in attempting to make it right. Carving out time to relax and reconnect in a non-pressured environment, is a great way to get our sexual groove back. Scheduling dates for sex also ensures that at least in those times, we and our partner are on the same page. Of course I am not suggesting that our sexual desires will always match our partner’s or vice versa. Knowing, however, that we each

need to move away from an overt focus on ourselves is the first step in attempting to satisfy each other sexually. While a relationship is about a whole lot more than sex, prioritizing sexual intimacy, signals that both you and your partner understand what makes this relationship exclusive and distinct from all others and indicates your willingness to work at it.

The steamed White Sea Egg that has become a savoured Bajan delicacy. The golden roe is a delicious delicacy, enjoyed by Barbadians for many years. Unfortunately a decline in the sea egg population led to extensive bans on harvesting. But good news‌ the ban has been briefly lifted and Bajans are once again enjoying this delicious treat.

Each shell was quickly cracked and opened, and the sea egg roe carefully removed. Traditionally sea egg is either steamed or sauteed, and served with plain white rice, cucumber and a few slices of avocado pear. Tried sauteed with some onion and sweet peppers, and served with pickled cucumber and rice. How was it? Truly delicious! Next time you visit Barbados, be sure to ask a friendly Bajan if sea eggs are in season.

Note: sea egg harvesting is controlled by law to limit harvesting to particular times of the year in order to prevent the depletion of the species.

The American Revolutionary War being in full swing and France fighting on the side of the United States meant that there was considerable military and naval presence in the Caribbean. OCTOBER 2015 We’ve included as part of our schedule: 

Vodka Seminar & Tasting Session at Stansfield Scott training room.

A tour of The West India Rum Distillery of the Production of Cockspur Rum and a Cocktail session on peering products with Cockspur rum.

A Mount Gay Visitors Center Tour which will allow the students to learn more on the history of Mount Gay Rums and rum sampling.

Written exams.

A rum shop tour that ends with the students practical exams.

Graduation Ceremony

We are pleased to say that four of our Art of Bartending Training Seminars students will be competing in the above competition. In the current seminars we've added two other segments; namely Health & Safety and Customer Service. All in all we believe we have created a more rounded learning experience for our students preparing them to be versed in local, and regional rums as well as other spirits,

proficient with best practices behind the bar, with a greater knowledge of mixology and customer service. Of note is the recent article by Pommarine in the Daily Nation, which stated that the demand for courses by persons is too great for them to accommodate. With this recent report, The Association through these training seminars are positioned to fill this gap in our efforts to raise the service standards provided by rum shops, bars and restaurants as well as hotels in the island.

OCTOBER 2015

Benefits of Private Tutoring By Raeann Beckles

I

f your aim is to improve your aptitude and knowledge base in a particular field, all education pertaining to this subject will be useful. If this statement is assumed true, then the benefits afforded by private tuition are enormous. You will have the advantage of a whole teacher to yourself, with their lesson plans and strategies of teaching designed just for you! It seems impossible to doubt the enormous benefits this will offer. In a classroom, one teacher may be faced with approximately thirty pupils, each with different abilities, different rates of learning, and individual strengths and weaknesses. Yet despite this, for the majority of the lesson the teacher will be forced to treat his class as if it contained just one student. He or she will orate from one end of the classroom, unable to gauge how effectively each pupil is assimilating the lesson. The lesson plans will be designed to fit the needs of the average pupil; and the teacher will proceed at a rate suitable for the average pupil. In this environment it is all to easy for a bright child or adolescent to fail to grasp one particular point, as the swathe of teacher talk washes over them like the unrelenting tides. It is unlikely even the best of teachers would spot the particular point of misunderstanding cast on the countenance on one pupil, hidden amongst so many other faces. To draw attention to their lack of understanding can be intimidating for the pupil: everyone else is silent, so they must have understood. Do I want to draw attention to myself? All too often the misunderstanding goes unexpressed and unaided. The obvious benefit of one to one tuition is that the tutor can tailor their teaching style to the abilities of their student. They will be able to gauge the level of the pupils understanding, and, more importantly, track down the sources of misunderstanding, and deal with them effectively. Away from the bustle of the classroom, the student will feel more able to voice their difficulties; and having just one pupil to deal with, the teacher will be more

capable of resolving them.

THE BAJAN RUM SHOP "After visiting two world-class distilleries in Barbados we load into a cab and spend the afternoon researching the island’s legendary rum shop scene. Come along! Barbados is well-known for beautiful beaches, posh resorts, friendly people and great distilleries, but one attraction that every visitor should experience at least once is a tour of the island’s rum shops.

We spent an afternoon touring some of the island’s most famous and well hidden rum shops. They are all unique, colorful and filled with interesting characters that you’d swear just walked out of a Graham Greene novel. By the end of the day we had bellies full of rum, smiles wide across our faces and whole new appreciation for Bajan rum culture. It’s safe to say that we will be back for more!!" (/rumconnection.com/rum-shop-tour)

Most islands in the Caribbean have a special collection of local hangouts and beachside watering holes, but the scene in Barbados goes far beyond anything we’ve seen before. Rum shop culture runs deep and has been a vital part of life in Bajan communities for more than 300 years.

Strictly Bajan Rum Shop Tours - Connecting Tourism with Tradition, Traditional Foods, Culture, Agriculture, Art, Entertainment & Locally made Products in one tour to our local village.

A rum shop is more than just a bar, it’s a social gathering place, a spot where neighborhood friends can join each other for a drink, a game of dominoes, tell jokes and talk politics. Liquor is not sold by the drink here, it’s sold by the bottle with mixers and a cup of ice. Don’t expect the barkeep to pour it for you either because the vibe is intentionally kept uncomplicated and laid back. Enjoy it.
