Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary
The beautiful and tranquil SANCTUARY CAFE and Lakeside Lawn of the Sanctuary are now open to the public on a limited basis. However, there are no tours of the rest of the facility, and all Interpretive walkways, Aviaries and Exhibits remain closed to the public. Call ahead to make sure that the Cafe and Lawn are open, as sometimes they are closed for private events. Hours: Monday to Friday from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM Saturday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM
Sunday from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM As mentioned earlier, the Sanctuary will close during special events. The Lakeside Lawn and deck area is open for people to stop by and have a drink or a snack while overlooking the lake. A limited service Cafe is open onsite serving tea, coffee, soft drinks and snacks. As many know, the Sanctuary lawn and deck area is a tranquil and beautiful lakeside venue - it is a wonderful place to unwind from the hustle and bustle of the city. The facility is 100% accessible to physically challenged individuals who need wheelchair access.

JUNE 2015 History of the Graeme Hall Swamp
T
he Graeme Hall swamp was once part of a 373acre plantation estate partially owned by the Kirton family in the 1600's. Owen Graeme occupied a section of the land at this time and upon his death in 1661, his portion was left to Evan Graeme. In 1715, a George Graeme sold land to James Elliot and then later in 1722, George Graeme and Philip Kirton collaborated to sell, lease, purchase and then resell the same 105 acre parcel of land. The wife of James Elliot, widowed in 1724, sold the Elliot portion of land to George Graeme. Upon the eventual death of George Graeme, his son Alexander Graeme inherited the land. Alexander and his wife Margaret, had made provisions for the inheritance of the land and so following their death, the court redistributed the estate. John Pollard Mayers acquired the estate, now 240 acres in size that increased following the acquisition of adjoining land owned by John Peers. However, he relinquished the land to John Cholmely Roach after a heavy debt. The chain of debt continued and the land, presently 242 acres was promised to Jacob Belgrave, a free mulatto in 1820.
Ann following her death made no provisions for the land. Between 1829 and 1842 the ownership of the land is vague. The ownership of the land in 1842 was recorded as Thomas Perch and eventually Mr. Jones. The manager of the estate, Edwin Clarke eventually purchased the land in 1892. The sons of Edwin Clarke, George and Dudley, inherited the estate in 1931 upon the death of Edwin Clarke. Dudley purchased his brother's share and finally sold the entire site, now 289 acres in size, to the Government of Barbados in the 1960's. The Agriculture Development Corporation was responsible for the lands until the early 1970's. The land was eventually sectioned and distributed among the various ministries of the government. South Coast Development Ltd. purchased the section owned by the Greame Hall Gun Club in 1969. To date the Government of Barbados still retains ownership of the eastern section of the Greame Hall Swamp. The western section is owned by the Greame Hall Nature Sanctuary.
Jacob Belgrave never received the land since John Roach renege on his agreements. The ensuing court battle was long and drawn out. Jacob Belgrave died in 1828 despite having offered the highest bid on the auctioned land. The matter was not settled upon his death but the court ruled in the favour of the widow of Jacob Belgrave, Elizabeth Ann, as the rightful heir of the estate. John Roach and John Mayers made great attempts to obstruct Elizabeth Ann Jacobs from inheriting the land but the transfer was sealed in 1829. JUNE 2015 As of mid 2000, the population of Barbados was recorded at some 274,540. The diverse ancestry of the island attributes to its current unique cultural blend which includes Arawak Indians, British settlers, European Indentured Slaves, African Slaves and East Indians. Overall, the people of Barbados (or Bajans as we are known) are quite friendly; so fitting in with locals will lend itself quite easily to your peace of mind.
Barbados is an island of the Lesser Antilles, 21 miles in length, as much as 14 miles in width and divided into 11 parishes. It is located at 13.4N, 15.4W. The island is situated in the western area of the North Atlantic Ocean and 100 kilometers east of the Windward Islands and the Caribbean Sea. Barbados is relatively flat with the exception of one major high point, Mount Hillaby, which measures approximately 1,115 feet or some 343 metres above sea level. The west coast of Barbados offers calm, clear water which is quite conducive to your many beach activities; while the east coast opens up beautifully to crashing waves and an environment that is more suited to sun bathing, walking, jogging, surfing and even meditation.
The Tourism Industry in Barbados is impetus for the economic development on the island as it has impacted significantly on the lives of all Barbadians. It is a very vital aspect of the economy of Barbados and it is always within our best interest to ensure that your comfort and safety is first and foremost. NORMA T. HOLLIS / AUTHENTIC PATH SRORY By Norma T. Hollis
N
orma T. Hollis has always listened to the quiet voice within and acted on it窶馬o matter what. From her earliest childhood memories, she had a knowing that hers was a huge purpose to realize during this lifetime. At the same time, Hollis always felt misunderstood by the most influential people around her. She was born with a deeply spiritual perspective of life that was and continues to be different from most.
When she was just eight years old, Hollis, a native of Detroit, Michigan, had a cold that turned into a perforated eardrum and constant ear infections. The only remedy to the ear infections then was the topical application of what she says felt like an acid based solution. This caused traumatic pain for Hollis and led to the use of antibiotics over four decades which resulted in numerous medical problems and multiple surgeries窶馬one of which helped close the hole in her ear.

The idea of moving from child care professional to self -sufficient entrepreneur might have seemed like a huge leap of Faith, yet for Hollis it was a natural step and aligned with her inner voice and her grandfather’s prayer. Her first entrepreneurial venture, Speakers Etcetera, a speaker training company which she founded in 1996 and then the first ever Internet directory of black speakers called Black Speakers Online, which she launched in 2000 and expanded into a speakers bureau were, unbeknownst to Hollis, just more excellent training on the way to her authentic purpose. Hollis became well known in the public speaking industry and is a largely sought after speaker. She is also highly regarded as a trainer of public speakers and has over 100 “protégés” around the country. Hollis also had the opportunity to personally coach and prepare Omarosa, from the hit Television show “The Apprentice,” for an independent speaking career. Hollis’ Authenticity Assessment, which she spent 30 years developing, is often compared to the MyersBriggs personality test because it gives people a different way to look at themselves, the popularity of the assessment and its effectiveness in helping people and organizations grow. It was ultimately the spiritual pact that she made with her maternal grandfather, a Baptist minister who prayed over her ear at age nine, that enabled the pain to subside just enough so that Hollis could lead as normal a childhood as possible. Their conversations and his prayer are what helped her see that the ear pain was an indication that there was something greater for her to “listen” to. This mystical event inspired Hollis to take the first steps on the labyrinth of her Authentic Path. While the “voice” continued guiding her, those around her were constantly attempting to lead Hollis down safer, familiar, and more traditional roads.
Many wisdom building years later, Hollis is now totally in her element as an authenticity expert in the field of personal development. She has initiated an Authenticity MovementTM and is teaching others around the country about the largely misunderstood, yet life changing value of authenticity. To this day, her pursuit of clarity and truth continues to motivate Hollis in all of her endeavors, which in turn inspires everyone she encounters. Hollis is most often compared to Maya Angelou and Tony Robbins for her dynamic speaking style, passion, charisma, originality and depth. Not only is Hollis an excellent speaker, she is a “world class” intuitive listener as well.
Hollis actually went to college to major in interior design and when her studies required more art than she was willing to learn, the “voice” instructed her to major in early childhood education. Hollis began her first career as director of early childhood programs to champion children’s welfare-believing that this was her purpose in life. ugh Williams is at it again! Oh and like he traditionally does; this is a family affair as Father (Hugh) and Son (Darren) made their way to the LONDON, HACKNEY VITALITY HALF MARATHON, which took place in May 2015. The games saw the influx of over 13,000 international participants,
among which was this Father and Son duo. At 56 years old Hugh continues to inspire and achieve as both, Hugh and Darren placed within the 1st, 1,300 runners. Locally, Hugh have participated in the Run Barbados competition and recently on May 31st 2015, he participated in the Athletic Association of Barbados Half Marathon.

James Sheppard As a male competitor, James have had his share of achievements and challenges within his short career. Of note he has secured second place at the recently concluded Nationals Men’s Physique competition. A very pleasing performance given
the level of work he’s put into preparing for that competition. James also participated in the Bridgetown Men’s Physique competition. Achievements and opportunities that he is grateful to have been part of and acquired. But like a two edged sword, with the achievements there are challenges and James has identified his greatest challenges as; accruing willing and able sponsors in the region. want to devote this article to showing you that there are ways to trim your mid-section and lose
weight easier than you think. This technique works and will continue to work no matter what new systems and gimmicks arise. You simply must first know what the different kinds of carbs are and how the body reacts to each of them. Now the obvious
foods that are high in sugar are mostly your processed food made by man in some factory and they range from doughnuts to your breads and special pastas. I must say though that they are special pastas now made from spinach and vegetables which are great for the body and taste great as well. Knowing how to eat carbs strategically is the key and enough activity to burn the sugar in the blood stream so it doesn't get stored as fat. I keep writing about this because people keep asking about it and once people get it they don't have to worry about gaining weight in all the wrong places again. If you are planning to eat junk food that is food without much nutritional value then you can do any activity that raises your core temperature and causes a light sweat. An example of an activity that can cause a high temperature is burpees, jumping jacks, jumpers, vertical jumps or you can simply ask me a question on Facebook. Let’s say you are planning a high carb evening and you know for a fact that you will be consuming this food, do at least 25 burpees an hour and a half before or 50 jumpers as an example. uly/August vacation is usually a time when parents can let schedules go and relax. The arrival of this vacation is exciting, but it also comes with a sense of dread, significant stress and anxiety. It means a change in routine, excruciating amounts of down time, travel, visiting family and friends, outdoor outings, barbecues, too much noise, too much food etc. etc. Here are some coping mechanisms and ways to use this vacation as a learning opportunity for your child with special needs. I hope these are helpful to you! Set and Stick to A Schedule and Keep Routines in Place Taking a few minutes to plan out the day or week can be the secret to a successful vacation. Whenever possible, maintain as much routine as possible. For example, keep consistent bedtimes and wake up times even when there is no school, and also try to keep similar limits set during school Keep up the Learning Learning does not have to stop just because school is out. This is a great opportunity to incorporate authentic learning experiences. As a leader, it’s important to learn to think outside the box and to choose which of two bad choices the best option is. Don’t immediately choose the first or easiest possibility; sometimes it’s best to give these issues some thought, and even turn to your team for guidance. By utilizing all possible options before making a rash decision, you can typically reach the end conclusion you were aiming for. Intuition When leading a team through uncharted waters, there is no roadmap on what to do. Everything is uncertain, and the higher the risk, the higher the pressure. That is where your natural intuition has to kick in. Guiding your team through the process of your day-to-day tasks can be honed down to a science. But when something unexpected occurs, or you are thrown into a new scenario, your team will look to you for guidance. Drawing on
past experience is a good reflex, as is reaching out to your mentors for support. Eventually though, the tough decisions will be up to you to decide and you will need to depend on your gut instinct for answers. Learning to trust yourself is as important as your team learning to trust you. Ability to Inspire Creating a business often involves a bit of forecasting. Especially in the beginning stages of a startup, inspiring your team to see the vision of the successes to come is vital. Make your team feel invested in the accomplishments of the company. Whether everyone owns a piece of equity, or you operate on a bonus system, generating enthusiasm for the hard work you are all putting in is so important. Being able to inspire your team is great for focusing on the future goals, but it is also important for the current issues. When you are all mired deep in work, morale is low, and energy levels are fading, recognize that everyone needs a break now and then. Acknowledge the work that everyone has dedicated and commend the team on each of their efforts. It is your job to keep spirits up, and that begins with an appreciation for the hard work.

T
he Bajan Sun Online Magazine Team shared a delightful and inspiring evening with Hannah Properties’, Managing Director - Julie A Dash a few Sundays back. For the Team this encounter left us all motivated to continue pursuing without fail, the various paths that we presently tread. Be inspired as you read her journey, her challenges and her victories; we sure were!
Julie A Dash A woman who has risen above the obstacles positioned to stop her! Julie A Dash was born in England in 1963. At age 20 she left England to work on a cruise ship as a cocktail waitress; which is how she came to Barbados in 1983. As she shared: “Barbados was one of the first major ports I visited. It was one of my first stops.” Though Julie worked 16 hour shifts and sometimes 18 hour shifts, without a day off and at a rate of $195.00 per month, Julie did not see it as a horrible experience as she learnt from it and as she quite proudly stated: “It was a big part of my education.” Barbados being one of her first stops, Julie took the opportunity to explore as she had two hours off. As the Team eagerly listened to see how her story unfolded, Julie begun: “So I got into a taxi and headed to the Cunard Paradise Beach. I got my towel out under a coconut tree and God spoke to me and I immediately
knew that this is where I would spend the rest of my life.” Following this encounter, Julie travelled for some time after and later returned to Barbados where she married a Canadian in 1989 and had two lovely children: one age 25 and who is presently a lawyer and the other who is 23 years old studying medicine at UWI - QEH.
As Julie continued she shared: “In the beginning I was not expected to work. Working was frowned upon.” She unveiled further that she was even compared to others and was told “And really what are you going to do? Because you have no education. Tell me what are you really gonna do?” Following this, Julie and her family faced a number of financial challenges. And it was at this point when the shower of financial woes came pouring down that she realised quickly that she had to work. With one child and failing businesses, Julie hadn’t the slightest idea what to do next. But in her warm bubbly voice she exclaimed: “I knew I was really good at sales and knew I could certainly make a drink!” Following this, Julie’s motivation pushed her to rise out of her situation. As such, she gained 100 cookery books from all over the world, all of which she read. With a humble and happy smile she said: “I am a seriously good cook today. My husband never had the same dinner for two days in a row over the time we were married.” As she developed her cooking skills, Julie started a catering business on the West Coast of Barbados where she catered to all sorts of people including, Joan Collins, Bono, Steven Segal and all sorts of actors, actresses and models.

But for Julie, there came a point in catering where she realised that there was no margin for error, there were so many hours in a day, the biological clock was ticking and that there was a better way to make money. So Julie began spreading her wings and trying new things. At a point she worked at a Café at a museum, then she bought a distribution business where she had 450 items and 500 customers. But as she reflected, on a Friday afternoon 450 out of the 500 customers had sad stories when it came to paying her and as a result she ran the distribution business into half a million dollars in debt by 1999. She exclaimed: “I was going bankrupt in big style!” Luckily for Julie she found a willing buyer; someone to sell the entire company to, including the debt, for just one dollar. She revealed that the individual did not buy the company; he bought her spirit. But, he did not realise that after the company was bought and Julie left, that her spirit would have gone also. Following this Julie was jobless with two amazing children that had to be educated. She passionately stated: “I knew I had to do better for them than I did
for myself and that they had to be educated at any cost.” In reflection she shared further that she would stand in her garden, water the herbs and think that there are two persons here: 1. ‘This person in a deep hole in half a million dollars in debt’ and 2. ‘There is me.’ Encouraging and motivating herself, she knew she had to change and pull herself out of this problem. Julie paused for a little then continued: “Because the difference between a man who earns $50,000.00 a year and a man who earns $100,000.00 is mind-set. The only difference is mind-set.” So Julie focused hard on her focus, her thinking, her mind-set and being positive at every point. What is more is that, it was at this point that Julie started her real estate company back in 2001. As she continued, she again reflected on her previous distribution business, where there was lots of stealing, a half a million dollar debt and where she was never paid a week’s wages. Yet still half a million was gone.

JUNE 2015 “Now we live in a very big blame culture. I can blame anyone but at the end of the day it was me. You have to take responsibility for yourself. If you can’t take responsibility for yourself, you can’t take responsibility for anything else. So it was my fault that we were half a million dollars in debt and it was through me that we had to come out of it. So, I never blamed it on anyone. I just knew it had to be a different outcome for myself and my children.” Hence, Hanna Properties which was established in 2001. Though it was really rough initially, Julie relentlessly worked and shaped her company to the successful business it is today. With some measure of humour she revealed: “In Barbados they do broking or multi-listing where you find the property, and I find the customer and we split the commission. At the time, I had no confidence or the audacity to go to an agent and say: ‘Listen, I got no money, I got no education. But, I want you to give me half your listings and I share half your profits.’ I thought that was rude.”

So Julie thought that the best thing to do was to get some sales, get some reputation and a track record under her belt and then maybe she can go and speak to those people who are more experienced than her. But as she expressed: “You won’t believe that during that time they threw rocks at me. Unbelievable! They tried to shut me down. I got terrible phone calls telling me that I was trash. I was scum. I was all sorts of things. I brought shame to the real estate business. Because no one was bold enough to advertise real estate on radio, or to shout as loud as I did or as I still do. They figured that this is not the way we do it, they were quiet and refined.” To Julie, real estate agents at that time were not taking care of the people of Barbados. She exclaimed: “The ordinary people felt that they were

From pieces of land that was worth $17,000.00 and helped people who were stuck. Julie and a very good friend of hers cleaned up so many lots and released them back into the market. As she shared: “Many people were land rich and cash poor and didn’t know what to do. They couldn’t afford the lawyer, and couldn’t afford the real estate agent. So, we decided the best thing to do was to help as many people as possible to make it better. Not only that but the satisfaction from helping people and the love that you put out, comes right back to you like a boomerang. So we did a lot of work like that and ultimately it worked very very well.” Since 2001 Julie and Hannah Properties have sold approximately 1400 properties to date. Julie shared further that: “When you put the love and passion into anything that you do you’re gonna come back out and feel it.” She indicated that that feeling is a very big thing for her, as she comes from a very big position of love. Her passion overflowed as she continued: “I put all out. I put all into everything I do. Sometimes you get burnt for it but most of the time it works. Always give more than is expected of you. But, it does not work like that generally.” As the interview continued the obviously perturbed Julie expressed: “Many people wake up in the morning and think how little they can do today to earn as much money that is possible. How much time they can cut? Can they be a little late for work? Can they cut a little bit off the lunch time? Can they go home a bit earlier? I work from the position of always giving more than is expected of me. Whether it’s like an interview like today. I’m gonna give you all I have.” She continued: “If you can’t give it your all, don’t bother at all. But on the other hand, so many people give so little and produce so little; that that is the enemy. My number one saying is ‘The Number One Enemy Is The Lack Of Energy.’ But, we have to create our own energy. We have to be responsible for our own energy. Some people have it and some people don’t.” As the interview was drawing to a close, Julie was asked one last question by Editor Raeann Beckles: “What advice would you give to someone like me or younger?” Sharing her advice as only she can, she began: “Find first of all what it is you want to do. I consider myself the luckiest woman in Barbados, because I really love my job and I really love Barbados. Barbados is always showing me something different and I am one with nature. I am so appreciative that I might stop and take a picture of the most beautiful bougainvillea or at Christmas a poinsettia. I am so aware of what God gave me. I am so aware that for many people to go all around Barbados and to come back down the East Coast they will have to pay a lot of money for that and it all has to be planned. I get to do it every week. I think it’s being at one with the universe, being at one with God; which every way you wanna roll it.

But coming back to your questions; love what you do or give it up! If you hate it, just don’t do it. Find what you love first of all and capitalize on it because we only have one life. Why do some people do absolutely nothing with the hours they have in the day? We all have the same amount of time in a day. That is all the time there is and we all have it. Why do some people do nothing with it while some people do everything with it? It is a choice! It is like being happy. I think that being happy is an internal decision. I believe you are happy as you make up your mind to be. If you wake up in the morning and decide you are going to be miserable; then that’s how it will be. It is a decision; a conscious decision. If you can decide to be happy and love everybody and give everybody a kiss and spread that love, your day will be happy and be a joy. I am lucky that I know how to spread it. Some people are never lucky enough to know how to spread that.” As the team smiled in agreement and delight for having been exposed first hand to Julie’s challenges and triumphs from Julie herself; she shared her last few words:
1. The Law of Attraction: As you sow, so you would reap. You would never get out of anything more than you put in. 2. The Law of Gratitude: We absolutely must be thankful. We live in a really ungrateful society. We live in an ungrateful world. I think in the Bible it says somewhere that ingratitude is next to witchcraft. Ingratitude is absolutely horrible! 3. The Law of Contribution: You absolutely must give back! I believe that if God give you an ability and he really did give me one; then we should use it. I am really able to raise money, that’s my God given ability. I can’t do it for everybody. I have to keep it close for the things that are close to me. But, the mind is so full of infinite possibility if you use it right!”

Corporations are now looking for employees who can bring the entrepreneurial spirit into the workplace serving to rekindle innovation and inventive thinking in organizational settings. Whether born or made, entrepreneurs have a knack for thinking differently, and the courage to give their ideas and passions a try. CARIBBEAN CUISINE: PELAU
P
elau (pronounced: pay-la-w) is a sure bet for any lime
This “one pot” dish is not time consuming, and is easy to prepare (once you plan your ingredients in advance) which makes it also ideal for picnics and river limes. As we say in Trini “this is ah fas’ cook”. This popular rice dish can be cooked with any type of meat or combination of meat: chicken, beef, lamb, goat, pork, and turkey) and is usually cooked with fresh coconut milk. If you don’t have fresh coconut milk you can use the coconut milk powder. Some people like their pelau dark, others like it brown or light brown. If you want it dark, be careful not to burn the sugar too much or else the pelau will taste bitter, and lose most of its flavor. I personally, prefer pelau that is not too dark. Instead of “burning” the sugar, some people buy readymade browning. This saves time, but you should be careful with the amounts of browning added. Some brands are stronger than others. This dish can be served with a side of cole slaw, lettuce and tomatoes, and even a little bit of homemade pepper sauce for a more spicy taste.
Ingredients: 3 lbs. of chicken thighs and or drumsticks, cut up into large pieces 3 Tbsp Bajan Seasoning 2 Tsp grated garlic 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 Tbsp soy sauce 1 Tbsp tomato ketchup Salt and pepper to taste 2 Tbsp vegetable or Canola oil 3 Tbsp cane sugar (substitute with brown sugar) 2 cups parboiled rice, washed and drained 1 cup chopped onions 1/2 cup chopped sweet peppers 1 cup diced carrots 2 cups cooked pigeon peas (canned is fine) 2 cups fresh coconut milk (dilute milk with water if using canned coconut milk) 2 cups cooking liquid (stock, water or reserved cooking liquid from peas) 1/2-1 whole scotch Bonnet Pepper Salt and pepper to taste 3/4 cup sliced green onions (white and green parts)

Barbados Crop Over Festival T
he Crop Over summer festival is Barbados' most popular and colourful festival. Its origins can be traced back to the 1780's, a time when Barbados was the world's largest producer of sugar. At the end of the sugar season, there was always a huge celebration to mark the culmination of another successful sugar cane harvest - the Crop Over celebration. As the sugar industry in Barbados declined, so too did the Crop Over festival and in the 1940's the festival was terminated completely. However, the festival was revived in 1974 and other elements of Barbadian culture were infused to create the extravaganza that exists today - an event that attracts thousands of people from across the globe. CROP OVER EVENTS & ACTIVITIES: Barbados Kadooment Day - The festival begins with the Opening Gala and Ceremonial Delivery of the Last Canes and the crowning of the King and Queen of the Festival - the most productive male and female cane cutters of the season. Bridgetown Market - consists of many stalls selling food and beverages as well as local arts and crafts. Enjoy the calypso and soca music and the live entertainment as you browse through the stalls. Cohobblopot - is a huge carnival-like show with members of the Kadooment bands displaying their elaborate and stunning costumes. There is also a huge entertainment package with the most popular calypsonians and bands performing to packed audiences. Kiddies Kadooment - The children are not left out as they can participate in the Kiddies Kadooment,
donning beautiful costumes and joining their friends in a band to parade before the judges of the competition. Folk concerts and art & photographic exhibitions are integral parts of the festival, highlighting Barbadian history and culture as well as the artistic talents of Bajans. Barbados Kadooment Day Calypso is one of the main features of the Crop Over festival. The calypsonians are organised into "tents" and these tents are sponsored by Barbados businesses. Calypsonians compete for several prizes and titles, including Party Monarch, Sweet Soca Monarch, Road March Monarch and Pic-O-De-Crop Monarch. The Party Monarch and more recently the Sweet Soca competition are among the festival's most popular events! The final of the Pic-O-De-Crop competition is held at Kensington Oval, and this is followed by the Fore-Day Morning Jump-Up! The finale of the festival is the Grand Kadooment! This carnival parade features large bands with members dressed in elaborate costumes to depict various themes. Designers compete for the coveted Designer of the Year prize while the revelers seem more intent on having a good time! The revelers make their way to Spring Garden accompanied by the pulsating rythym of calypso music. When they reach Spring Garden, the party continues with more fantastic music, lots of food and drink and, for some, a quick swim at the nearby beach. A grand end to a grand festival. I
f your aim is to improve your aptitude and knowledge base in a particular field, all education pertaining to this subject will be useful. If this statement is assumed true, then the benefits afforded by private tuition are enormous. You will have the advantage of a whole teacher to yourself, with their lesson plans and strategies of teaching designed just for you! It seems impossible to doubt the enormous benefits this will offer. In a classroom, one teacher may be faced with approximately thirty pupils, each with different abilities, different rates of learning, and individual strengths and weaknesses. Yet despite this, for the majority of the lesson the teacher will be forced to treat his class as if it contained just one student. He or she will orate from one end of the classroom, unable to gauge how effectively each pupil is assimilating the lesson. The lesson plans will be designed to fit the needs of the average pupil; and the teacher will proceed at a rate suitable for the average pupil. In this environment it is all to easy for a bright child or adolescent to fail to grasp one particular point, as the swathe of teacher talk washes over them like the unrelenting tides. It is unlikely even the best of teachers would spot the particular point of misunderstanding cast on the countenance on one pupil, hidden amongst so many other faces. To draw attention to their lack of understanding can be intimidating for the pupil: everyone else is silent, so they must have understood. Do I want to draw attention to myself? All too often the misunderstanding goes unexpressed and unaided. The obvious benefit of one to one tuition is that the tutor can tailor their teaching style to the abilities of their student. They will be able to gauge the level of the pupils understanding, and, more importantly, track down the sources of misunderstanding, and deal with them effectively. Away from the bustle of the classroom, the student will feel more able to voice their difficulties; and having just one pupil to deal with, the teacher will be more

But, with achievements comes the challenges; or as we call them - disguised stepping stones. As such, for the sisters being entrepreneurs, the greatest challenge was dealing with self-doubt. As Malaika shared: “The fear of success is something that I personally have to overcome, and as an entrepreneur it is a harder journey. Spending 12 hours

JUNE 2015 Q: What would you say are some of your greatest challenges as an entrepreneur? A: To date some of my greatest challenges are the red tape you find when dealing with some government agencies, and non-governmental organizations that are set up to assist entrepreneurs. Also the business ecosystem in Barbados is much stagnated and people have accepted this as the norm. People are always fearful of change so even if you try to do something that is different and better you find that you have to work extra hard and spend more time and money. What is more is that Barbados being a small country with limited opportunities locally, I find I come upon too much unwanted cannibalism. I know you should be competitive and your business needs to survive, but this doesn’t mean that everyone that does what you do or in the same sector is your enemy and must be destroyed. Sourcing materials are also very difficult and very few places deal with arts and supplies locally so the prices you pay are not competitive.
For an entrepreneur such as Troy, there are a number of services which can make doing his job a bit easier. As such when that question was posed to him, Troy responded: “Access by the average person to be able to make purchases online easier would explode a whole new market for creative persons in Barbados. The process of purchasing a downloadable item still seems scary and most times difficult for the average person. Most things are still tied directly to having a credit card and lately have been made easier with the Visa branded debit cards. But, I believe only one banks does this. We need more online alternatives to purchase. JUNE 2015 Q: How have you dealt with your business challenges or how do you propose to deal with those challenges? A: I can tell you how I have tr ied. I tr y to find the key decision makers in the agency or organization. I have tried to work with or get assistance from, but this is still problematic in a way. However, I have found not relying on the person answering the phone and side stepping them that I can get information and assistance that I need. I have tried countless times to get persons in the creative sector to recognize that it would benefit us better to collaborate on local work and build a work force to attract and land international contracts. That’s where the money is. There are few local companies on their own that can bring big international contract or work to Barbados. A couple of years ago we had the Cricket World Cup and it took almost all the big signed companies in Barbados to provided signage for that event; so things like this I am talking about.
Q: What would you like to achieve in the next 5 years? A: I would love to have a company that represents the best of what Barbados has to offer creative wise. I would love to have a company that does the exact same thing the NCF does; but in a private capacity working on projects together where possible as the NCF can do all. I also would love to have my own internationally recognized art gallery representing local, regional and international artist. I also do clothing but not much; however, I will launch a clothing line inclusive of shoes and accessories this summer. Lastly, I would love to have a place where the arts can flourish and live; a 24/7 hang out spot for artists. This encompasses, music, theater, culinary, visual and to some degree law abiding psychedelic art also. Q: How useful is technology to the Entrepreneur?
Q: What are some of your achievements within your business? A: Well I would say being able to wor k on pr ojects that are for a national stage, for example working for the parish independence committee and also being recognize at a young age as a person that can be consulted on topics concerning various aspect of the creative side of Crop-Over and also on airbrushing. That my business through me more so is known for what I do and have become a recognize name when it comes to almost anything creative visually. Being recognized by Trinidadians as being very talented in the art of wire bending. Wining a best in Show price at the Crop-Over visuals arts exhibition, seeing work that I have design and build won top prices during Crop-Over, I have many Kings and Queens and best individual, and other categories that have won prizes that I have work on. Seeing people that I have taught gone on to excel also.
A: Speaking in general Barbados is behind. We have a lot of catching up to do. I find that the time lag between when a major technology is released in the more developed countries and the time it reaches Barbados its use and value diminishes, as the problems it was intended to solve have long past. But, depending on your field of work being up-to-date with technology that can be cost saving and provide a better service, can be very useful. We must also take a note from the television; anything no matter how old and outdated can be used as a new technology, and for a new purpose. We have lots of old ways of doing things in Barbados which can be applied to a new area and be considered a new and wanted technology; for example the juking board.
