Difference between Self-employed, Entrepreneur and Professional By Kevin Cahill Guelph
Ever wondered what the difference between Self-employed, Entrepreneur and Professional is? While all of these terms are often used interchangeably, there is a difference. Self-employment is the act of generating one's income directly from customers, clients or other organizations as opposed to being an employee of a business. Industry Canada defines self-employed as “people who earn income directly from their own business, trade or profession rather than earn a specified salary or wage from an employer”, while Statistics Canada defines the self-employed as “working owners of an unincorporated or incorporated business, persons who work on their own account but do not have a business, and persons working without pay in a family business.” An entrepreneur is a person who organizes and operates a business or businesses, taking on greater than normal financial risks in order to do so. In general it is felt that entrepreneurs require a high level of creativity and innovation as well as a high level of management skills and business know-how. They are the individuals that are constantly pursuing new business ventures based on opportunity and/or necessity, and are often able to improve the competiveness and innovation of a sector or region. Most commonly, the term entrepreneur applies to someone who creates value by offering a product or service, by carving out a niche in the market that may not exist currently. Entrepreneurs tend to identify a market opportunity and exploit it by organizing their resources effectively to accomplish an outcome that changes existing interactions within a given sector. Observers see them as being willing to accept a high level of personal, professional or financial risk to pursue an opportunity. Where as a professional is someone who has completed a professional degree, subject to strict codes of conduct and
ethical and moral obligations characterized by or conforming to the technical or ethical standards of a profession and exhibiting a courteous, conscientious, and generally businesslike manner in the workplace. A professional relates to a job that requires special education, training, or skill. It is also defined as an individual participating for gain or livelihood in an activity or field of endeavor often engaged in by amateurs. It could also be considered as a person formally certified by a professional body and belonging to a specific profession by virtue of having completed a required course of studies and experience and whose competence can usually be measured against an established set of standards. It is interesting then to understand that all three terms are mutually exclusive. Not all self-employed individuals are entrepreneurs, and some entrepreneurs are not self-employed while a professional could be simply an employee of a larger organization. As Michael Gerber puts it, “The entrepreneur is not really interested in doing the work; he is interested in creating the way the company operates. In that regard, the entrepreneur is an inventor. He or she loves to invent, but does not love to manufacture or sell or distribute what he or she invents”. So when I think of myself for example; when I left medical sales in 2004 and joined Freedom 55 Financial, I left my role as an employee and I became self-employed. In January 2006 when I opened my first office in taking on additional financial responsibilities I became a self-employed entrepreneur. When I completed my studies and successfully defended my Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation I became a professional, self-employed entrepreneur. Thank goodness for Red Wine!

About 20 years ago, the Personal Financial Planner, or PFP, was developed by the banking industry for use by staff providing financial advice to customers. The PFP was never a top-tier designation, it was invented so that bankers could have a designation as they could not pass the CFP exam which makes the PFP redundant and confusing. The CFP is administered by the Financial Planning Standards Council, which was founded in 1995 as a non-profit organization which has a mandate to ensure Canadians are well-served by financial advice. The organization that regulates the PFP started out as an offshoot of the agency that regulates the brokerage industry and is a profit-making enterprise.
In all seriousness, this raises a lot of questions for me. The majority of family doctors are professional but in Ontario they probably would not be considered an entrepreneur or self-employed. I have always maintained that an Executive Director of a charity or a not-for-profit are a perfect example of an entrepreneur, but they are not self-employed and may not be a professional. They can be fired on the drop of a dime by their board of directors that control the organization. But, at the same time they have a staff that they are responsible for managing while ensuring the organization maintains financial stability while reaching fundraising targets.
So to conclude, when you are looking for someone to give you true financial planning advice and not someone to sell you a product and someone to help you navigate the rough financial seas ahead before you and your family sail into the horizon, look for a self-employed entrepreneur who is a professional with the CFP designation. You can guarantee yourself honest, objective advice from someone who has as much to lose as you do if their advice is wrong.
Coming back to obtaining financial advice, the majority of Canadians get their advice from their banker or more specifically their bank teller who sells them a product when they walk in the branch. Clearly a banker is not selfemployed; they receive a pay cheque from their employer on a regular basis. They may not receive a bonus cheque however if they do not make their branch imposed targets but their regular take home pay is unaffected. They are definitely not entrepreneurs. They are not responsible for paying the expenses of the branch and at the end of the day when they leave where they work, they are not responsible for taking files home. They may or may not be professionals depending on their level of education and designations obtained.

About St. Lucy St. Lucy Destination 439 is known for being the only parish of Barbados out of the eleven parishes that is named after the female patron saint, Saint Lucy of Syracuse (283-304). It is the only parish that is a peninsula, surrounded on three sides by the Atlantic Ocean to the north, east and west. Geographically, while the parish may appear rugged and forbidding, it offers some very spectacular sights that are a photographer’s paradise. Stretching from the eastern to western coastline the parish has thirty-five (35) bays (an indentation of a shoreline), the most of all the parishes. In 1629, shortly after Barbados was established as a colony, the island was divided into six parishes. St. Lucy was in that first grouping of parishes established by Sir William Tufton, the then Governor of Barbados. The other parishes were St. James, St. Lucy, St. Thomas, St. Michael and Christ Church.
The residents, estimated to be 10,323 make up eight percent (8%) of the population of Barbados. The total area is 36 km2 with a population density of approximately 286.75 inhabitants/ km2 with Checker Hall named as the largest district. As you approach the end of the ABC Highway on the island of Barbados, this church will quickly come into view. It is positioned on the northern side of the Sir Theodore Brancker (Barbadian Politian) Roundabout in Fairfield, in the parish of St. Lucy. St. Lucy Parish Church was one of the original six (6) parish churches constructed on the island when it was first developed under the administration of the governor at the time, Sir William Tufton. Incidentally, the parish of St. Lucy in Barbados is the only parish that is named after a female patron saint; the parish also claims the honour of being the birthplace of Barbados’ first Prime Minister, the Rt. The diverse ancestry of the island attributes to its current unique cultural blend which includes Arawak Indians, British settlers, European Indentured Slaves, African Slaves and East Indians. Overall, the people of Barbados (or Bajans as we are known) are quite friendly; so fitting in with locals will lend itself quite easily to your peace of mind.
Barbados is an island of the Lesser Antilles, 21 miles in length, as much as 14 miles in width and divided into 11 parishes. It is located at 13.4N, 15.4W. The island is situated in the western area of the North Atlantic Ocean and 100 kilometers east of the Windward Islands and the Caribbean Sea. Barbados is relatively flat with the exception of one major high point, Mount Hillaby, which measures approximately 1,115 feet or some 343 metres above sea level. The west coast of Barbados offers calm, clear water which is quite conducive to your many beach activities; while the east coast opens up beautifully to crashing waves and an environment that is more suited to sun bathing, walking, jogging, surfing and even meditation.
The Tourism Industry in Barbados is impetus for the economic development on the island as it has impacted significantly on the lives of all Barbadians. Q: What would you say are some of your greatest challenges as an entrepreneur/DJ?
Q: What role has technology played in developing your business?
A: To stay current and keep abreast of emerging trends and listeners changing tastes in music. But, once your ear is to the ground and you remain humble and stay hungry, it’s not so much a challenge as it is just a part of what you love doing. Music is my passion!
A: It’s central to it. At one time it was a DJ with about five or six, even 10 crates of records (depending on the gig). Now it’s all about a laptop and your controllers. Nowadays I move with way more music at my fingertips than was possible back in the days of Vinyl and even CDs. And that all came with changes in technology and how it's utilized by the DJ. Everything is electronic. It’s made it MUCH easier to do what I do, much more effective at execution of a task.
Q: How have you dealt with your business challenges or how do you propose to deal with those challenges? A: I meet them head on. That is my nature - I don’t run from issues. Confront and deal with them and move pass them. The business is always changing and you must move and change with it to remain relevant to your listeners and followers to keep their attention. Q: What are some of your achievements within your business? A: I've won the Atlantic Canada's DMC competition in 1994. That was groundbreaking for me. And I've remained the #1 radio announcer on radio in Barbados for over a decade and counting. Q: What would you like to achieve in the next 5 years? A: I would like to expand into music production on a larger scale. This year was a breakout year for me and I would like to step up the works next year and do more, work with more artists, as well as put out more music. I also want to take my DJ-ing to the world. I believe I am only now coming into my own, and I have a LOT more to accomplish in this business. I
Q: How useful is technology to the Entrepreneur? A: Extremely. Depending on how you use it, it can revolutionize how you do what you do. As I said before, almost everything I do is controlled electronically and technology has revolutionized the field. Master the tech and you master your craft. Q: What is a must have (in terms of technology) for any Entrepreneur in any field? A: A computer. It starts there and the software to simplify and expedite what you do. Once used effectively it affects what you do at the core and makes your work significantly easier. Q: What services can make your tasks easier to execute? A: Maybe an assistant. Maybe another me, lol.

So it would behoove you to monitor your thoughts and see what you have been thinking because remember this. All thought is creative. All thought. Every thought that goes through your head is creative.
Remember, it's all a process and processes go in cycles, so play at keeping your thoughts in alignment with your overall idea of where you want to go and who you want to be. Then speak the words that bring those desires from the interior world of your thoughts to the exterior world of physicality.
If you don't put any emotion into a thought or don't pursue a thought, it will not be creative at a high level in your immediate reality but it will always add impetus to the collective thought of the universe. So if you have thought something, then the vibration of that thought will cling to similar thoughts in the collective.

The average lady thinks that she is getting enough
exercise but she is not. Most women in their 40's are focusing on a career and spending most of the time sitting behind a desk. Either way, you're probably not getting enough exercise. Without regular exercise, muscles shrink at a rate of 1 to 2 percent per year. The more muscle you lose, the slower your metabolism gets and the fewer calories your body burns. If your eating habits don't change, your waistline starts to expand and your clothing gets tighter. You can expect
to gain about 10 lbs. between the ages of 40 and 50. What happens in your 50's is not very positive. Firstly, the average woman experiences menopause at age 51, after which estrogen levels decrease by as much as 75 percent. A decline in estrogen causes cholesterol levels to rise and blood vessels to become
less elastic, putting your heart at risk. As estrogen levels plummet, bone loss becomes more rapid, upping your risk of fractures. Fat - which had previously been stored in the hips and buttocks, primarily for breast feeding - begins to collect more in your abdomen and you develop a "pot belly". Your skin also becomes thinner, drier and less elastic due to this drop in estrogen as well as years of sun exposure and lack of proper nutrition. Wrinkles may begin to appear at the corners of your mouth and become more prominent on other parts of your face and body. Reduced circulation may cause your once rosy cheeks to look pale and colorless. DISABILITY
Persons with Disabilities are still being treated differently despite more awareness and advocacy. Some people see a person who is helpless, while others see them as brave. What they want is for the world to see them as an ordinary person first-to put the person before the disability. Lesson 1: People with disabilities are not helpless. Throw out this assumption! All people with disabilities are different. But, they have routines down to a science. They can learn, adapt, and develop some pretty ingenious ways to navigate around their world. They are open to be asked questions if you have a concern. Just accept them when they tell you they are fine on their own. Lesson 2: Staring is rude! Don’t stare at people with disabilities. It’s a natural human response to look at people who are different, but staring can make a person with disabilities feel dehumanized. If you’re genuinely curious, introduce yourself and start a conversation. Lesson 3: Thanks, but no thanks. Please don’t insist on helping people with disabilities.

By doing these things, you’re putting yourself at the center of the act of kindness. People with disabilities have their own solutions, and sometimes “helping” doesn’t actually help. Lesson 4: Please don’t tell people with disabilities they are brave or courageous. People with disabilities are not brave for being in public or doing things on their own. They are just living their lives and trying to get through the day’s challenges, joys, and tedium like everyone else. Next time you see a person with disabilities, try to see them as an ordinary person first. Try to see how they might be just like you. When you see them jump into a burning building to save a puppy, then you can call them brave! People with disabilities are people first. If you find yourself caught off guard when you run into someone with a disability, it is suggested you ask yourself, “How would I want to be treated?”

Brett Callaghan is an entrepreneur and rightfully so. As the founder, owner and managing director of Totally Barbados Brett aims to promote and showcase ‘his’ island of Barbados; in and throughout the world. Some 10 years after its official launch in September 2005, Brett has since launched five other websites namely: www.TotallyBarbadosRealEstate.com, www.TotallyToronto.com, http:// events.TotallyBarbados.com, www.SellItBarbados.com and www.BarbadosToDo.com. But what got him started is what we seek to uncover. As such, we asked Brett a series of questions to understand better the origin of his passion. When asked: ‘What inspired you to go into this line of business?’ Brett shared: “My brother who was born in Barbados, who was a professional jockey at the Garrison Savannah and who is currently a professional jockey in Toronto; Slade Callaghan, inspired me to develop the idea for Totally Barbados. During the Christmas holidays of 2004, we had difficulty finding out what was on and happening in Barbados. We searched online and could not find a credible source of information of what events and daily activities were happening in Barbados. Slade suggested I look into this further and on January 11th, 2005 I registered the domain name www.TotallyBarbados.com and through my entrepreneurial drive, 10 years later, I still continue to promote my island home of Barbados to a local and international audience. It is therefore without question, that a website and business of this nature requires specific skills and resources to run successfully. As such, at the head of the organization is the ever qualified Brett Callaghan who is a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) and graduate from the Toronto School of Business. Brett is also managing director, in charge of sales, advertising, planning and all development of all aspects of the business including technical. But despite his various roles and vast experience, he is a true representation of the saying ‘No Man Is An Island’. A: HEAD ON! – Have faith, hope and love for one another. The key to any challenge is to have a strong commitment from the beginning to “want to change’ things for the better of all involved. Each challenge should be looked as an opportunity to grow, change and develop. We each have to put in the time, effort and personal development work on ourselves to make things change for the better for ourselves and for those things we strive for and believe in.
Q: What would you say are some of your greatest challenges as an entrepreneur? A: My greatest challenge is increasing and proving to all Barbadian businesses the return on investment, each of their companies receives as premium members of Totally Barbados. In sales, advertising and marketing there’s an old marketing adage that says it takes six to eight exposures to a product before a customer decides to buy. Just because a customer doesn’t buy on the first exposure, that company is still receiving valuable awareness and exposure, whether or not a purchase is made. Therefore, to combat this issue, we’ve implemented a social media strategy to increase repeat exposure over 12 social channels for all of our premium members throughout the year. A: I am a passionate person and knowing the exposure my websites give to many tourism related businesses in and about Barbados, brings me alive. Some are unable to see this benefit, but when I lay my head down to sleep each night, I know within my heart and mind, that I’ve done a great job today and I will do a better job tomorrow. Q: What would you like to achieve in the next 5 years.
A: I would like to continue on in my goal of having multiple travel destination websites across the Caribbean, USA and Canada. NET NEUTRALITY REGIME NEEDED

It’s not just a concern among some Barbadians or some St. Lucians but a Caribbean-wide issue. A local Facebook group opposed to Digicel blocking calls via WhatsApp has launched a petition for signatures and letters calling for the “unblocking” of this action. What they want is for Digicel to allow WhatsApp calls on their network. The group, known as The Barbados Lobby, is also opposed to the Cahill Plasma Gasification project which has come under considerable national protest in recent months. Barbadians and Caribbean people at large use WhatsApp, Skype and other Over The Top or OTT services free of charge. What was popular to message someone with a Blackberry phone has become almost second nature for social and business purposes with Android phones, other smart phones and tablets. It is not surprising then that the action by Digicel has come under
so much public fire. But unlike the United States, Barbados and most Caribbean countries do not have national policies backed up by legal regulation on what is called Net Neutrality. Net Neutrality prevents a telecommunications company from blocking Skype, Whats App and other OTT services. Legally then Digicel can block such services on its network. Legally it could stop Barbadians from using WhatsApp for messaging and Skype for video conferencing and talking to family overseas or conducting business over the Internet. Peoples’ rights are not protected by emotionalism, letters to Government or discussions on Facebook, regardless of however well-intentioned they may be. They are protected in law and that law requires monitoring and the imposition of fines if such laws are contravened. Let’s agree, no accept, a coin has two sides. The Internet has led to considerable loss of business for telecommunication service

In Barbados the Fair Trading Commission has imposed a partial policy of Net Neutrality on FLOW which states that Whats App and Skype or OTT services must be allowed without charge. But this regulatory decision which could be argued by FLOW to be discriminatory has not been imposed on Digicel. Barbados needs a comprehensive Net Neutrality regime which recognises that Net Neutrality is not only about blocking OTT services, but also includes manipulation of bandwidth.

This is a very common problem which most people have with their dogs. We tend to think dogs bark for no reason but there are lots of reasons and it is up to us as owners to do something about it.

Separation anxiety barking: is characterized by constant home-alone barking usually coupled with other behaviors such as house soiling, visible anxiety upon departure and arrival, and destruction around

If your dog barks when you work at the computer or talk on the phone, preempt his behavior. Settle him in his crate or on his bed with a toy or stuffed Kong before you sit down to work. Watchdog barking: is triggered by sights and sounds such as passersby, slamming car doors, or a cat on the lawn. Watchdog barkers were sentries in a previous life. Teach your dog to respond to noises by getting a toy or barking once, then coming to find you. Keep blinds closed and don’t put your dog’s bed or his confinement area anywhere near a window or bay door. Crating your dog can be a great way to signal to him that he can take time off from his patrol duties.

Barbados is well-known for beautiful beaches, posh resorts, friendly people and great distilleries, but one attraction that every visitor should experience at least once is a tour of the island’s rum shops.
We spent an afternoon touring some of the island’s most famous and well hidden rum shops. They are all unique, colorful and filled with interesting characters that you’d swear just walked out of a Graham Greene novel.
