The solution to rising energy costs? Your roof or land

Reduce your exposure to ever-increasing prices with a fully funded solar installation.

As energy prices spiral out of control, as a business generating your own power has never made more sense. Renewable power specialist, Olympus Power understand that the investment required for renewable technology can be off-putting, especially when other costs are soaring, so they offer flexible, funded solutions.

There is a way to get a fully funded solar installation that provides electricity up to 75% cheaper than you’d get it from the grid. It’s called a power purchase agreement (PPA) and it’s the most cost-effective method of getting solar power for your business.

There is no capital outlay or maintenance costs

because the system is fitted, owned and looked after by the installer, all you need to do is provide a roof or nearby land to put it on.

Unlike power from the grid, the cost of generating your own isn’t going to rocket next month – or increase emissions. The maximum cost for each unit of solar-generated electricity is 15p. Grid prices for commercial contracts are currently between 60p and 80p per unit, and only likely to increase.

Olympus Power offers PPAs of varying contract length, but the longer the agreement the cheaper the power and the more you’ll save against grid prices. When the agreement ends you own the system, and the electricity is then free. If you don’t want the system, Olympus will remove it.

Most commercial sites are suitable for solar panels, and even North-facing roofs can generate plenty of power. Installation is quick and easy and once the panels are installed, you’ll barely notice they’re there.

Until your next (lower) electricity bill lands, that is! This is one of the Top Exhibitors at the Plant & Asset Management 2022 which was held at the NEC from 5th-7th April which can be found on page 6.

Like the idea but unsure if it’s right for your business? Olympus Power will carry out a free feasibility study – no hard sell, just the facts: T 01392 549700 info@olympuspower.co.uk www.olympuspower.co.uk

Cloud service for WTS Wireless Inclinometer Line

The WTS Wireless Tilt System is a flexible, all-weather radio telemetry system designed to provide high accuracy remote angle measurement data. The WTS gives surveyors, geotechnical specialists, and structural engineers the ability to record and log data remotely without the cost and inefficiency of traditional wired methods.

The heart of the system is the WTS Wireless Inclinometer; a high-accuracy robust instrument utilising advanced MEMS sensor technology to ensure maximum reliability.

A variety of complementary base stations and either PC or hand-held data acquisition modules are offered to allow a complete measurement system to be configured to suit any application. A variety of fixed base stations and hand-held readers are available to enable the user to tailor the system to their optimal requirements.

Highway agencies, bridge and civil structure owners spend large revenues assessing structural health by visual or other types of consuming inspection methods

of bolted and welded joints, together with other vital structural elements. Obtaining multiple readings to monitoring the entire structure can be costly and labour intensive. Using the WTS Wireless Tilt System, a single structure is fitted with low power WTS Inclinometers at strategic points, thus helping to determine where weak points may be and when maintenance is required. Additionally, the WTS Wireless Tilt System may be used in the verification of design calculations when new structures are manufactured providing valuable data to refine computer models of structural behaviour.

Worthington Creyssensac

Industrial compressed air brand, Worthington Creyssensac, has launched the new ‘Class Zero’ oil-free compressors for the UK & Ireland markets. Certified to be 100% free of any traces of oil or other contaminants, the new OF 20-75V range has been designed for use in pharmaceutical, biotechnology and chemical sectors, where production of air quality to the ISO 8573.1:2010 class is essential to maintain high standards of manufacturing.

As there is no lubrication in the compression cycle of the machine, this new generation of compressors replaces previous oil-injected machines, that rely on downstream filtration to achieve the required high levels of air purity. As well as further enhancing product safety, oilfree technology enables pharmaceutical and chemical producers to save time and money by dispensing with monitoring, cleaning, and maintenance of oil filters, the removal of which will help to achieve lower operating costs.

With climbing production energy costs in mind, Worthington Creyssensac implemented variable speed drive (VSD) compressors in its new oil-free models to help offset the rising costs. A VSD compressor matches the power consumption to the air demand, especially when

Exposure limits and worker safety: Choosing the right personal or portable gas detector

Worker health and safety laws have come a long way in recent years.

Even in the last few decades introductions of PPE (personal protective equipment), safer working conditions, and limits on exposure to dangerous chemicals and gases have become commonplace. A key part of being able to ensure these safety regulations are being met is through accurate and regular gas monitoring. ION Science offer world-leading VOC gas instruments that help keep workers safe and healthy both during their working life and long after.

Effective management of VOC (volatile organic compound) exposure on workers is critical for any business where there is a short-term or long-term risk to health (in some cases, both).

Monitoring through STEL and TWA (short term exposure limit and time weighted average respectively) is a good way of ensuring workers are not being exposed unnecessarily.

Using PID (photoionisation detection) technology in personal and portable gas monitors is the most effective way to help protect workers from harmful VOC exposure. As experts in the development and manufacture of PID solutions, ION Science offer a range of industry-leading personal and portable gas detectors.

ADC Electrical: Mechanical and Electrical Engineers

In this issue of Industrial Process News, we are pleased to announce ADC Electrical as our Electro-Mechanical Engineering Company of the Year.

ADC Electrical The company was founded in 1974 in premises in Riverside Road, Southwick, Sunderland. Early in 1994, it moved to the present premises, which are purpose-built and is around 14,000 sq. ft. in floor area. The base is a 2.5-acre site in Washington, Tyne and Wear, and the company services the whole of the UK.

Initially, the company was formed to provide a repair and rewind service of industrial electric motors to the shipbuilding repair and engineering businesses in the North-East. It quickly extended the base in order to provide a similar service to all types of industry. The core business was then extended to include the supply of new electric motors and the manufacture of air-cooled transformers and iron and air chokes.

Today, ADC Electrical’s main service is to maintain and repair rotating electrical equipment including motors, fans, pumps, and more. Ensuring that a pump and/or motor is repaired to the highest quality, ADC Electrical’s engineers are trained to the highest level and have experience and expertise that are trusted in the industry. Its pump range covers all major pump manufacturers and types such as Grundfos, Wilo, Flygt, Lowara and Centrifugal, Submersible, Positive displacement and more.

Over the last 12 months, ADC Electrical has seen its Pump repair business experience a large increase, with the motor and fan repair customer base also increasing. In addition, supply of new motors and other goods has shown good numbers, and this has been supported by the introduction of new pump engineers into the business. The company’s manufacturing division is working with its customers on the introduction of new bespoke stator models up to 1.2 megawatt in size, and ADC Electrical may be the only supplier currently building this type of product to this specification and has also gained UL approval for one of its products.

ADC Electrical has also developed its working relationship with the Primary Engineer Programmes project. There is a lack of new engineers coming through the ranks in engineering in general, and this appears to coincide with the reduction of engineering-based subjects in schools. With Primary Engineer Programmes, the company is working with local schools to try to increase skills and knowledge, with the hope of inspiring the next generation of engineers.

The Primary Engineer Rail Project enables teachers across the UK to deliver two inspiring projects for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 primary pupils aligned to the curriculum. These

projects will develop practical, design, build, make skills along with cognitive skills such as the Engineering Habits of Mind (EHoM); problem finding, and creative problem solving, along with critical thinking skills, teamwork and communication skills.

This proposal gives ADC Electrical the opportunity to fund the Primary Engineer Rail Project for schools in 2022, which will establish meaningful links between engineering and schools. The foundation of this is based on training teachers and partnering them with ADC Electrical engineering professionals. The engineering professionals will be able to support the Primary Engineer Rail Project in the classroom, with teachers and pupils either face to face or via online sessions providing a real-world context to the learning. This will hopefully increase the aspiration and career awareness of the pupils and teachers about the rail sector and within rail engineering.

It was hoped that with the ending of the pandemic that business, and availability of spares and products would slowly return to somewhere near normal throughout 2022. Instead, the turn in global events early in 2022 added a whole new level of supply chain issues and everincreasing costs. However, ADC Electrical’s increased turnover during 2021 has been a big plus, based upon its expectations from last year, but of course the increasing costs of everything from materials to energy is a major concern looking forward.

ADC Electrical have found that from a repairer’s point of view the lack of availability of replacement products has been a factor for increased repair business. The same factor has also meant that spare parts are less widely available, and lead times are ever increasing – in excess of a year now becoming more common. The company has also noticed that business has fluctuated more than usual, going from quiet to extremely busy then back again, and recognises that this is possibly due to financial constraints being reflected in many companies’ maintenance budgets.

The company had forecasted that it would struggle to meet the previous year’s sales figures due to the loss of the manufacturing contract and those ongoing global issues. Instead, Andy continued, “During the first eight months of

2022, we in fact managed a 10% increase on sales on the previous year.

Following this, we are very pleased to be recognised by Industrial Process News for this award. It is an opportunity for people to see the efforts that our whole team puts in day after day, and receiving the award is another high for us in a year filled with ups and downs.”

Not content to remain static, ADC Electrical has exciting future-plans. In addition to the Primary Engineers project, in the short term it intends to maintain the current business, while adapting as best possible to the everchanging pressures put on all UK businesses. Long-term goals are to grow as a business, while staying true to its environmental commitments, the company is currently looking at solar panels as a possible means of reducing energy cost and a reduction in its carbon footprint.

Looking back, Business Development Director, Andy Patten commented, “Along with most businesses, we have had some highs and lows in recent times. In November last year, we won the AEMT award for service centre of the year and were also finalists in the category of product of the year, which was obviously a high for us. However, during the same time period, our business took a blow with the confirmed loss of one of our main manufactured products to Chinese competition. This put us under some pressure going into 2022 knowing we needed to find a way of filling the gap sales that the loss of the manufacturing product had left us with.”

“Swapping to bag-in-box delivers major benefits, reduces costs, and improves a carbon footprint of a business,” says Fenton Packaging Solutions Sales Development Director Chris Warren. “Prior to filling, BiB saves up to 40% in warehouse capacity and takes up 90% less transport space, when compared to rigid alternatives.”

The sustainability advantages of BiB over rigid containers are clear. BiB packs consist of a cardboard box which is easy to recycle once the product has been emptied and a plastic co-polymer cube-shaped bag with gland and closure which weighs in at about 10% of the weight of the equivalent capacity jerrycan.

Cardboard goes into one waste stream and the bag will go into another recycling stream where it exists for the recycling of co-polymer containers. If the bag cannot be recycled, it can be processed on the waste to energy ticket.

UK has launched the RXE 10-16C, a successor to its highly successful STILL RX 50, one of the bestselling electric forklift trucks in its class.

STILL

The new RXE 10-16C arrives as the smallest member of the electric forklift family, powered by lead-acid or lithium-ion batteries. It strikes the right balance between driving comfort, manoeuvrability and safety while moving loads of up to 1.6 tonnes in the tightest of spaces.

At a height of just under two metres and being less than a metre wide, the three-wheel counterbalance truck fits

safely through doors or narrow aisles in the warehouse aided by very sensitive steering.

The RXE 10-16C does not lack for power either, having a top speed of 12.5km/h when loaded. For safety, especially when manoeuvring in tighter spaces, Curve Speed Control assistance comes as standard equipment.

Other safety features include protective roof bars that offer the driver the best possible view of people or objects nearby.

The new truck gets its power from a rear-wheel, three-

Asynt announce the launch of their new benchtop photochemistry reactor system, the LightSyn Lighthouse. This compact and robust photoreactor has built in safety features you’ll love and meets customer demand for higher reaction yields.

The new LightSyn Lighthouse was designed to maximise power intensity while keeping photon flux even throughout the reaction medium, reducing the amount of photons typically lost over distance. By using new in-house technology in the form of the quartz ‘reactor rod,’ the competitively priced Lighthouse achieves faster chemistry and higher reaction yields.

The strong relationships between the Asynt scientists and their customers results in the open communication that is the foundation of the companies ‘Asyntise’ ethos, where users are encouraged to ‘customise, don’t compromise.’ This enables Asynt’s research and development team to clearly understand the markets wants and needs, prioritising key requirements, and respond quickly.

Asynt’s drive to offer scientists the tools they truly desire has resulted in a diverse range of customer collaborations; previous examples include fReactor (accessible modular Flow Chemistry platform) and the PressureSyn (unique ultra-

Independent risk management consultants

Only when the risk facing an organisation is well understood can it be effectively managed. Key to the successful identification, assessment and management of risk is engagement with the right people, using the right processes at the right time. At RAS, we are confident that we differentiate from many of our competitors and our approach is distinctive. Understanding and facilitating the effective management of risk is our core business, and we believe it is important not to just walk the well-trodden path but look at each client’s particular risk context and develop a tailored solution, working in partnership with them. Everything we do is about managing risk in three areas: safety, business, and environment, and as you’d expect, we work to internationally recognised standards.

We have particular capabilities in accident risk in the oil & gas, pharmaceutical and chemical sectors and work with the key industry players, meaning our clients can be certain of up-to-date knowledge and an undiluted focus on the specific risk challenges of their business.

Our job is to make sure you are protected and your best interests are looked after, which is why we question everything and don’t work in isolation, looking at a project holistically to see how it impacts on the entire organisation. It’s the only way we can confidently say ‘we’ve got your back.’

Cepac: Together we achieve more

Cepac has been serving the chemicals sector and have been a proud attendee of CHEMUK for many years.

The Cepac Rawcliffe site are leading providers of speciality transit packaging including United Nations (UN) certified packaging. Corrugated box production can be a wide-ranging and complex exercise.

Cepac has a six-stage process for creating corrugated packaging to UN standards. At it’s most simplistic, the critical considerations involve: planning, design, testing, certification, manufacturing and maintenance. We work closely with our customers and manage the whole process in-house.

Our design team is well versed in the complexities of packaging for dangerous goods. For instance, we have on-site drop testing equipment in order to ensure the product will perform in laboratory tests, which simulate external conditions. Safety Instruments Company of the Month

Noise measurement experts for over 50 years

In this issue of Industrial Process News, we are pleased to announce Pulsar Instruments as our Safety Instruments Company of the Month.

Pulsar Instruments Inc. was founded in 1969, in California, by a group of university researchers to produce a new linear scaled Sound Level Meter, and the company moved its main headquarters to the UK in 1981 and has operated out of Filey, North Yorkshire ever since.

As a Safety Instrument Manufacturer, Pulsar manufactures and sells noise and vibration monitoring equipment, in addition to a wide range of health and safety instrumentation on its website. The company has recently expanded its range of products to include dust meters and audiometers, and is currently looking to expand into other categories in the near future.

Pulsar’s comprehensive range of Sound level meters,

noise meters, personal noise dosemeters, noise-activated warning signs, safety professional kits and outdoor monitoring kits are designed with busy health and safety practitioners in mind. The company’s noise meters monitor noise levels accurately, identify locations where there is noise at work problem, and employees who may be affected; and they capture essential evidential data to avoid costly civil compensation claims for noiseinduced hearing loss (NIHL).

In the past month, Pulsar launched its latest product, the Pulsar vB² Human Vibration Meter. Ecommerce Marketing Executive, Robert Dunn, commented, “This is an exciting new addition to our product range as this is the first meter that we have produced to measure whole-body vibration. WBV is normally caused when an employee is standing or sitting on vibrating machinery and can have a major impact on the spinal column and surrounding muscles.” The main cause of injury with WBV is high vibration levels along the Z axis, this is the

up and down motion that can compress the employee’s spinal cord.

The Pulsar vB² is designed to make vibration risk assessments as effortless as possible, and it features a wide array of new features, including:

n Seamlessly switching between measuring for handarm or whole-body vibration

n It is user-friendly with an intuitive user interface

n License-free software to generate all reports

n Compliant to BS8041:2017 and the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005

n It can effortlessly calculate m/s², vibration exposure points and maximum exposure time all at once.

Pulsar works hard to stay ahead of its competitors in the industry, all of its products are made in Britain and come with a 7-year Warranty, and the company offers unrivalled UK-based technical support to all clients.

Also in a new venture, the company has recently launched a brand new ‘B2B Buy Now, Pay Later’ payment method on its website. This is a first for the industry as none of the competitors offers this option directly through their website.

Cashflow may be one of the biggest challenges that companies face in the coming months, but Pulsar believes that employee’s safety is something that should not have to wait. Being able to spread payments over 90 days with no added interest will enable

companies to take action as and when the need arises. This flexible payment method will help clients to navigate through the current uncertain times.

Robert also commented, “As we have taken stock recently, COVID-19 really made us adapt and bring the business into the 21st century. Whilst customers could already purchase our products online, we had a full website redesign to streamline the customers buying process. Whether somebody wishes to purchase directly, requires a demo, or even find one of our distributors, they can do everything online, easily.”

Pulsar is currently in the process of expanding its product offering to include gas detectors, hearing protection and much more, and it aims to be a one-stop shop for safety instrumentation.

On a Roll! Printed laminate containing over 30% PCR content

Cake Décor is the UK’s largest manufacturer of cake decorations, producing extensive ranges for Plant Bakeries, Blue Chip Food Manufacturers, Artisan Businesses and Major UK Supermarkets.

They were founded in 2006, owned by Orkla since April 2021 and have built a strong reputation for quality product and the highest customer service. They have a ‘right first time’ approach to NPD and have innovation at their very core, so when Waitrose wanted to change to printed film for their Ready to Roll Icing it was an easy discussion to have to suggest changing from a traditional laminate to one with

post-consumer recyclate to beat the Plastic Tax being introduced in April.

According to the Government website, the

new tax is being introduced to “encourage the use of recycled rather than new plastic within plastic packaging. This will in turn stimulate increased levels of recycling and collection of plastic waste, diverting it away from landfill or incineration.”

“Moving to a PCR film was made easy by working with National Flexible. It ran first time on our packing lines and both we and Waitrose are very happy with the result.”

Make better molds – Mill better, drill faster

Ultimately, it’s about setting the bar high and keeping it there. UNISIG sets a standard looked up to by the competition. It’s a state-of-the-art mindset that takes mold finishing to a new level with a machine that allows you to mill better and drill faster.

Mold making isn’t easy. There are many intricate challenges that include: highly complex geometry with 2D and 3D features, managing a wide range of part sizes, and short lead times on small quantities and new designs with no room for error. Compounding these challenges is the pressure to keep up with the rapid pace of demand and technology.

But there’s a way to overcome those obstacles: Do better work with technology designed specifically for complex mold making.

Our USC-M series Milling and Drilling Centres allow you to drill faster and mill better with a single machine and fewer setups. These Milling and Drilling Centres meet the challenges of milling and gundrilling all types of metals with either a single universal combination spindle or dedicated milling and drilling spindles. Utilizing high performance spindles that provide exceptional rigidity and power transmission, these machines deliver hightorque milling capability for aggressive metal removal and shorter cycle times. Additionally, 5-axis positioning enables mold manufacturers to tackle complex geometries with exacting precision in a single setup.

Many manufacturers claim to provide milling and drilling in a single machine, but the truth is those hybrid machines neither mill nor drill well enough to make a significant difference in either operation. In effect, one process is an afterthought of the other. Our USC-M series, however, was designed from the beginning to be a single machine with superior milling and drilling performance and accuracy. State-ofthe-art milling technology is embedded into a machine that has the power, thrust, speed and process monitoring competitors thought would be difficult to attain, or simply not possible.

In addition to superior quality and accuracy, the pay-off for single setup milling and drilling is efficiency and an improved bottom line. Mold makers cut delivery times to their customers with faster setups and production along with reduced overall labor costs. Once they move away from mold making operations with two machines, most of our customers find they can’t afford to manufacture without a USC-M-series Milling and Drilling Centre.

The benefits of milling better and drilling faster with USC-M series machines do not stop at the spindle. There are intangible benefits as well. UNISIG USC-M series Milling and Drilling Centres allow mold manufacturers to approach their work differently and explore different approaches to mold making. With the entire manufacturing process streamlined, customers find their engineers and design teams enjoy more freedom and flexibility with the expanded capabilities. Finishing and assembly are faster because the design is more efficient, and manufacturers can do things effortlessly that were a struggle previously.

Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning

Humidity in the winter

Humidity levels drop in the winter because cold air holds less moisture than warm air. Many large buildings, warehouses and factories use air handling units to ventilate and heat large areas. These units take the cold dry air from outside and convert it to warm air inside. The problem gets worse when the dry air heats as it loses even more moisture, resulting in lower relative humidity.

The Science

Relative humidity is the amount of water vapour actually in the air, expressed as a percentage of the maximum amount of water vapour the air can hold at the same temperature.

At any given moment an air molecule will hold a certain amount of moisture –more on rainy days than hot sunny days. In winter, cold outside air (whether ‘wet’ or ‘dry’) is brought inside and heated. As air heats it expands, but the actual moisture content of each molecule cannot change, and therefore the relative humidity falls.

It is widely acknowledged that maintaining relative humidity levels between 40-60% significantly improves human well-being and mechanical performance. Read more to find out how low humidity effects both human and mechanical production.

How does low humidity effect our wellbeing?

Low indoor relative humidity has a negative effect on human comfort. The adult human body is typically 60% water, so in a dry environment our bodies naturally lose moisture. Unlike temperature, low humidity is more difficult to detect.

Typical symptoms include:

n Dry and itchy skin

n Cracked lips

n Dry eyes (especially for those with contact lens)

n Sore throats

n Nosebleeds

n Headaches

In addition, low relative humidity dries our mucous membranes and inhibits our body’s natural defence against germs, viruses, and bacteria, making us much more vulnerable to catching common colds and flus. Maintaining relative humidity between 40-60% is scientifically proven to reduce the spread of airborne pollutants and viruses.

How does low humidity effect mechanical processes?

Moisture absorption also affects hygroscopic materials like wood and paper. The low humidity dries out these materials causing them to shrink, curl, crack or split.

When these materials pass through machines, usually at high speeds, it causes paper jams and machine breakdowns. A list of common problems is listed below:

n Static electricity build-up and ESD

n Drying out of hygroscopic materials like wood and paper

n Paper jams and machine breakdowns

n Increased wastage

n Decreased productivity

The Solution

There is a wide range of humidifiers and a variety of factors to consider in selecting the right humidifier for each building or application, such as energy use, water supply, cold water or steam, gas or electric, evaporative or spray, humidifier situation, control compatibility and maintenance needs. It is therefore important to seek advice from specialists who can provide guidance and design a bespoke system that will serve each unique specification. Installation, commissioning, spare parts, ongoing service and maintenance costs also need to be considered, and a planned maintenance contract is recommended to ensure equipment is kept in good working order and the initial investment is not wasted.

Humidity Solutions have a team of experienced and highly knowledgeable engineers who can advise on a full range of applications and provide a complete turnkey solution, providing reassurance for the customer and protecting their investment in both their people and their machinery.

Biral to install its SWS-250 weather sensors across Greece after major project win

Understanding thermal issues to reduce scrap

Nomatter what industry or what prevention measures are in place, some scrap is unavoidable. But there is a huge difference between the small amounts of scrap inevitable in everyday processes and the avoidable scrap that comes from a bad run. There are many possible causes, but one of the most overlooked causes of a bad run is down to thermal issues during the process. A quick fix can come from looking at thermal components such as heaters, controllers and sensors in your machinery, as Don McPeak, regional sales manager at industrial heating technology manufacturer Watlow, explains.

As a general rule, the more heat content involved with a manufacturing process, the higher the chances that the scrap being produced is related to a thermal issue. Unlike a material or mechanical issue, a thermal issue might not be as visible

Biral is to supply its SWS-250 weather sensors across Greece for major project. Biral will work with Microstep-MIS on the two-year project to provide comprehensive meteorological information to critical productive and developmental sectors, such as public bodies and educational and research institutions.

It will also include the expansion of Greece’s existing network of Automated Weather Stations (AWS), which will be installed in selected areas for the measurement, recording and processing of meteorological data on a 24-hour basis.

Additionally, the project will also upgrade the existing network of upper atmosphere stations with Automated Radiosonde Systems (ARS) for the measurement, recording and processing of meteorological data of the upper atmosphere. Part of the Automatic Weather Stations and their sensors will be installed near the sea, in a particularly harsh operating environment.

As well as installing sensors on weather stations, the project will include the development of a web portal so meteorological information can be quickly and easily circulated.

The SWS-250

Biral’s SWS-250 weather sensor is optimised for use in aviation applications where both visibility and extended present and past weather information is required. With its ultimate visibility performance, the visual range can extend to 99.99km, allowing for use in meteorological observation networks and research applications.

It incorporates a backscatter receiver to form a visibility and present weather sensor. Designed for both runway use and ‘met gardens,’ the SWS-250 has a visibility performance up to 75km and reports 39 WOM 4680 codes. The sensor measures visibility, fog, haze, drizzle, snow, hail and other non-frozen precipitation according to WMO-4680.

Built to a high specification, in powder coated aluminium for long and reliable service, the SWS-250 can be integrated with an ambient light sensor for use in aviation applications where both RVR and METAR data are needed. An optional calibration kit is available, which allows calibration in the field to be carried out simply and quickly.

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS)

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS) was founded in 1931 and is a government agency responsible for making weather forecasts and observations for Greece. Under the Ministry of Defence, it is a certified EASA MET Service Provider for supporting Civil Aviation (ATHINAI FIR/HELLAS UIR) and Maritime to METAREA III (Mediterranean and Black Seas) and its mission is to cover all the operational meteorological and climatological needs of the country.

Based at the former Athens International Airport at Hellinikon, HNMS operates under the auspices of the Hellenic Air Force, staffed by both military and civilian personnel.

to the eye on first inspection. It’s not unusual for there to be several runs of irregular product, or long periods of downtime, before a problem can be pinpointed. Thinking about thermal issues sooner, rather than later, can reduce that downtime.

The impact on different industries

Thermal processes are everywhere in manufacturing today as the application of heat is one of the main ways to shape plastics, metals or rubber. In aerospace applications, parts such as engine brackets, frame parts and wing panels all require some degree of heat treatment. Aerospace manufacturers often have very high standards that they hold vendors to, and improper heat treatment can mean a faulty order.

Lanemark brings heating benefits to small brewery application

Anew gas process heating system from Lanemark Combustion Engineering is now fully operational in London at a leading microbrewery, Villages Brewery, with particular gains noted in terms of operational efficiency.

“We have installed and commissioned a liquid heating TX 25E burner package on a brewing kettle supplied by Bespoke Brewing Solutions, with whom we liaised closely throughout the project,” says Lanemark’s Process Burner Sales Manager, Adrian Cadman. “This provides a capacity of 30hl or 18 UK barrels – and is now central to Villages Brewery’s production.”

The burner is installed on the external wall of the circular vessel, firing through the structure into a submerged 2½” nb. stainless steel tubular heat exchanger, which takes the form of a helical coil, located at the base of the tank in order to deliver the optimum blend of maximum heat transfer and minimum intrusion into the available space.

Benefitting from Lanemark’s own TxCalc specification software, efficiencies in excess of 80% are readily achieved. This is further enhanced by low exhaust temperatures of typically 180°C, which is markedly lower than alternative systems where up to 300°C, reducing efficiency to just 50%, can be noted.

Archie Village, Director at Deptford-based Villages Brewery –which distributes to a wide range of pubs and bottle shops throughout the capital – highlights the role played by the new installation.

“The overall aim of the project has been to facilitate an increase in production output while building on the high quality that is at the heart of our reputation – and the Lanemark system is already delivering in both respects,” he says.

Oliver Valvetek Solutions ensure longterm reliability

Productioncommenced this month on a significant order for more than 500 subsea valves made up of ½” Ball Valves and ¾” Check Valves. The order that exceeds £2 million is earmarked for shipment to South America for use on the Yellowtail Development, off the Guyanese coast. Oliver Valvetek has again been selected to work with the Subsea Equipment Manufacturer and the end user, following on from previous successful project executions.

A number of important factors were considered by the customer in choosing the valves. Oliver Valvetek was able to provide a robust valve design to mitigate leakage risk to the environment and ensure long-term reliability; stem seals had dual seal technology to ensure double redundancy and the valves fitted with metalto-metal gasket seals on the valve end connectors as opposed to conventional elastomeric seals.

The customer used collaborative standardised valve design, which allowed the SDU design and valve operational interfaces to remain the same, thus significantly minimising the need for design changes. All the valves on the project are fully qualified to API6APR2F and API17D 2nd Ed and are scheduled for shipping between August 2022 and May 2023.

The ball valves were also subject to an additional specialist qualification for the project to ensure that process wetted sealing was not affected by aggressive process media.

framework. The presenters engaged in a lively debate with delegates, covering questions such as: are we adopting Industry 4.0 technology quickly enough?; when we compare the UK to nations such as China or the US are we behind or ahead of the curve in terms of adapting to automation?; and are we embracing the benefits that come from the modern use of the data? The wider debate continues, of course, and the BFPA is available to address any questions regarding the above themes.

IXON Cloud helps machine builders find value in machine data

At Smart Industry 2022, IXON Cloud demonstrated their recent advancements in various historical and live data dashboards and the recently released report generator, designed to give both machine builders and end users valuable machine information at their fingertips.

Extending machines with a conditionbased strategy is a great opportunity for machine builders. With data from different parameters already available in the PLC or from additional sensors, metrics such as current drive utilisation, running hours and cycle counts help determine whether an asset is likely to break down or requires attention.

With these insights the quality and reliability of equipment can be improved

and the machine’s uptime will increase over time, driving a competitive advantage. It enables better decisionmaking for maintenance teams, and helps the end customer to get more out of their equipment and save on unnecessary maintenance.

IXON Cloud also provides secure remote VPN connectivity to machinery, allowing OEM’s to quickly troubleshoot

and diagnose issues without the need for site visits, cutting down on travel requirements and getting machines running again faster.

All of this can be presented in a fully whitelabelled online portal and easily shared with colleagues or customers. Find out more at: https://www.ixon.cloud/ applications/condition-monitoring

The recently launched Nitrile Gloves are ideal for research and production facilities, life sciences and non-sterile drug manufacturing applications. They deliver improved comfort for extended use, along with high tactile sensitivity, without compromising worker safety. Powder-free, the gloves are manufactured without vulcanization accelerators1 or added sulphur and do not contain natural rubber latex –reducing the risk of Type 1 and Type IV glove-associated skin reactions as well as protecting the application. The gloves also feature a patented technology to protect the skin known as Low Derma Technology.2

Recyclable via The RightCycle™ Programme

In addition to these benefits, Kimberly-Clark Professional™ helps customers close the loop through the only manufacturer-led PPE recycling programme: RightCycle by KimberlyClark Professional®. Now in its 11th year, the programme has reclaimed more than 1,670 metric tons of waste globally that would otherwise have been landfilled. It is currently available in the U.S., Canada, the UK, Ireland, Germany, France, Belgium, Austria and Spain.

Looking forward, the company plans to continue
