PET recycling label innovation

CCL

Label, the world’s largest converter of pressure sensitive and extruded film materials for decorative, functional and information labels, has unveiled a new generation of their EcoStream labels that support the recycling of PET bottles at a very high quality level. They are made from floating low-density polyolefin material that separates very easily from the heavier PET flakes in the sink/float process step at the sorter and recycler – which results in the yield of clean PET flakes that can be recycled back into new bottles, closing the loop.

“The official endorsement by both the European PET Bottle Platform (EPBP) and the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) in the United States underpins the performance of the label in the recycling process and the compatibility with existing recycling streams and technology,” says Reinhard Streit, Vice President and Managing Director Food&Beverage Europe at CCL.

The EcoStream® SP (Shear Performance) clear and opaque white pressure sensitive label is a further development of the existing EcoStream version, that has been successfully supplied to the international beverage market for many years.

Freshly blown and immediately labelled bottles can induce folds or bubbles on regular labels. EcoStream® SP pressure sensitive labels are developed to keep perfect labelling through flexible properties in particular suitable on post-shrinking PET bottles.

All other valuable properties of basic EcoStream labels are maintained unchanged and allow perfect and clean separation without contamination or discolouration neither of the washing bath nor PET-flakes.

RTI specifies

a Safe

Computing Platform for future rail operations with European railway operators and industry

With digitalisation, many new technologies will enter the railway system that place high safety requirements on IT environments. As part of the sector initiative, Real-Time Innovations (RTI), the largest software framework company for autonomous systems, has collaborated with a group of European rail operators and industry companies to move this initiative forward.

With the introduction of enhanced Control Command and Signalling (CCS) approaches, and novel technologies

such as advanced sensing and artificial intelligence into the rail system, it is necessary to design the appropriate IT platforms for future rail operation. In this context, the railway initiatives Reference CCS Architecture (RCA) and Open CCS Onboard Reference Architecture (OCORA) started working on a Safe Computing Platform concept in 2020, which is expected to provide the basis for safety-relevant railway applications for both onboard and trackside deployments. A key design paradigm is the introduction of a standardised method for separating

applications from the computing platform. This decouples domains with very distinct lifecycles and leverages latest advances in the IT sector, while still leaving room for vendor differentiation on the detailed computing platform implementation.

ABB wins Red Dot award for FlexPacker industrial

Delta robot

ABB’s IRB 390 FlexPacker® industrial Delta robot designed for ultra-fast packing has been chosen for the Red Dot Product Design Award – the second ABB robot to receive the prestigious award in two consecutive years.

The global Red Dot Design Awards recognise achievements in product design, with the jury –comprised of over 50 international design experts –testing and evaluating thousands of entries every year. In 2022, the Red Dot Award panel looked for products that showed design quality and a high degree of innovation – at-tributes that informed the FlexPacker’s development from the beginning. The award reflects the importance of design in robotics as more automated solutions are rolled out to collaborate with humans and compliment skilled work to make production safer and more sustainable.

The FlexPacker Delta robot was designed specifically for ultra-fast, high payload picking and efficient pack-aging of goods up to 15kg. During its development, particular focus was placed on shelf-ready packaging, in which the products can be placed vertically, making it ideal for the food and beverage, pharmaceutical and consumerpackaging segments. Equipped with either four or five axes, the robot’s ‘tilting’ axis enhances its flexibility, making secondary packaging is faster and more efficient.

The FlexPacker’s appearance reflects its level of functionality, with its white painted coating making it both aesthetically pleasing but also easy to keep clean. Very few horizontal surfaces and a simple, geometric shape prevents the accumulation of debris, helping it maintain its operational speed and precision.

Praised by the judges for its ‘clean design, quality and innovation,’ the FlexPacker boasts two new joints, offering greater freedom. The result of a radical redesign of the standard Delta robot’s parallel arms, these joints offer increased stiffness to withstand additional loads, allowing the FlexPacker to pick up more or heavier items, or use larger, more sophisticated grippers. The joints are sealed, making them maintenance free for the lifetime of the robot. For more information, please contact:

Addressing climate change through BioBased alternatives

How can the United Kingdom address the growing concerns about carbon emissions due to fossil fuel-based asphalt roads?

The asphalt industry is gradually shifting from traditional Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) to Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA). A new, low-carbon bio-binder was developed that can substantially reduce carbon emissions from road construction as well as position itself as an alternative to fastdepleting fossil-based binders.

Gautam Zen UK introduced a bio-based asphalt solution incorporating kraft lignin, a bio binder resulting in the development of the sustainable & environment-friendly BioLigninAsphalt with lower emission levels, improved durability of pavements and extended lifetime of roads. The technique allows asphalting companies to partially replace Bitumen in the mix with Lignin, thereby reducing the mix temperature without impact on performance.

In March 2022, SteelPhalt, Harsco Corporation, launched the world’s first Carbon Negative Asphalt SteelSurf ECO+ using steel slag and renewable bio binder Kraft Lignin. This was successfully tested in Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council in South Yorkshire, for the first time in the UK. On 3rd August 2022, SteelPhalt completed yet another project at St. Andrews Major School, Dinas Powys near Cardiff using

Its real-time output can be taken into any control or monitoring system and used to initiate alarms or warnings and to track the path of a storm cell. Its hard-wired connection means that it is reliable, even in when the worst storms arrive.

The BTD-350 was developed specifically for installation off-shore on marine platforms, oil and gas rigs, vessels and at off-shore wind turbine parks.

The BTD-350 features a strengthened vibration resistant design with extensive use of both stainless steel and marine grade paint technology to ensure a long life in the harsh marine environment. For example, when mounted on a marine sub-station, one BTD-350 can offer advance warnings of an approaching electrical storm to even the largest of off-shore wind farms. When mounted onto a service or support vessel, it becomes a mobile warning system, which can be used at any wind farm, offering protection to all staff at that location.

How do you calculate the cost of your wrapping operations?

means that you only need to use half the material to secure a pallet for shipment. Similarly, our Goliath and ExcelAir machine films can stretch between 100 and 300%, which means that each roll can wrap far more pallets than a conventional film. As a result, far less wrapping material is required for each load shipped.

It’s all too easy to look at the initial price of a roll of film and assume that’s all you need to consider when ordering wrap, but does a cheaper roll provide good value for money when used?

Based on your current film specification, how much material do you use for each pallet?

If you wrap a large amount of product each day or week, you may find yourself going through a significant amount of thicker or less efficient film, which may raise your overall wrapping costs in the medium to long term. Furthermore, budget films may not provide enough tension to maintain high integrity for your pallets in storage or transit, potentially losing stability over a short period of time. This results in potential damage to interior packaging and product; additional costs that may need to be considered when shipping.

“Changing to a high-quality specialist wrap may, at first, appear to increase the initial cost per roll... but the benefits gained in terms of efficiency and performance will make vastly greater long-term savings.”

We’ve listed just a few reasons why this is below:

1: High stretch

Our Goliath hand films stretch 100% when used, whereas standard hand films can only stretch 25% before losing retention performance and tearing. This

2: Reduced ordering costs

You can reduce the number of rolls required for your wrapping operations by using specialised stretch film that travels two or three times the distance (yield) of standard stretch film. Further optimisation of the wrap configuration is possible due to the films amazing performance. This reduces purchasing costs, frees up valuable storage space, and reduces the time spent replacing finished reels. In addition, fewer deliveries result in reduced transport costs, fuel usage and emissions.

3: Maintain quality

Reduced material use does not imply decreased quality. Specialist films have a high durability and tension, ensuring the integrity and safety of the pallet throughout its journey. This also improves the presentation of your goods on the pallet, allowing for easy bar-code reading and a clear view of your primary products.

4: Reduce waiting times

Perforated films allow hot or moisture-laden products to cool or dry while being wrapped, eliminating the need for dedicated time and space in your busy operations. ExcelAir can cut your cooling times by more than 50%, saving you both time and money.

5: Return on investment

We understand that your primary revenue is dependent on your products. Our films have been

designed to protect and preserve your shipments, with the goal of minimising damage or spoilage of loads. This results in higher profit margins on each consignment delivered.

“By embracing the latest technology in high performance films, you can reduce film usage by up to 70% and costs by 50%.”

6: Film waste

Our films have reinforced edging, which not only ensures a stronger wrap, but also allows rolls to be dropped, thrown or run over and still unwind without issue, unlike standard films, which will continue to tear. We calculated that approximately 13% of standard pallet wrap is discarded without being used due to performance issues. This is something to think about during the purchasing process.

7: Staff productivity

Employees who dislike using pallet wrap are common

in fast-paced warehousing and distribution. Standard films require far more effort to use because they are not flexible and cannot deal with protrusions, increasing the risk of strain and injury. Unreliable film, which frequently tears and fails, can frustrate and reduce productivity, especially near the end of a shift. Goliath film requires far less effort and your employees will appreciate your investment in their tools.

It is not a difficult or lengthy procedure.

Goliath and ExcelAir films can be easily installed on existing machinery or introduced for hand wrapping, with no extra effort!

Contact us today and we will walk you through the process; pallet wrap is all we do.

Vacuum Cleaners for hazardous dusts

It is essential when evaluating a vacuum cleaner for industrial and commercial cleaning tasks, that consideration is given to the relevant hazards and that the equipment is therefore specified appropriately.

Hazards from dusts and spilled product fall in to two distinct categories; the first is dusts that are hazardous to health. This category includes obvious products like asbestos and silica dust, but any dust that can be breathed in by the operator or other personnel in the workplace is likely to be hazardous to health to a degree.

The second category is dusts that are hazardous in the environment. The obvious category is dusts that can potentially cause an explosive atmosphere, particularly organic products like sugar and flour. Some products fall in to both categories such as wood dusts, which are both hazardous to health and potentially explosive.

Selecting an appropriate Industrial Vacuum Cleaner requires consideration of the potential hazards which then informs the specification of the machine.

BVC – British Vacuum Cleaners is the leading brand of British manufactured industrial vacuum cleaners. Manufactured by Quirepace in Fareham, the range includes both M-Class and H-Class machines for dusts hazardous to health and ATEX rated equipment suitable to operate in potentially explosive environments.

BVC equipment is manufactured to order to match the specific requirements of individual customers. One of the principal considerations is the choice of filter material used for the primary filter. This can be constructed from several different materials including PTFE coated, fire resistant and anti-static materials in addition to standard filter materials. Within machines designed to recover hazardous materials there is always a second stage filter, usually a 3rd stage filter, and sometimes a 4th stage filter, with each stage designed for a specific purpose to ensure the hazardous product is collected safely and that the exhaust air is as clean as possible.

The range of BVC Industrial Vacuum Cleaners extends from 1kW single phase units to 15kW 3 phase machines. In addition, Quirepace supply both compressed air and petrol/diesel powered units. The smaller machines in the range; the IV40 and IV60, are both available as several different versions rated as either M/H Class or ATEX, or indeed both, for when dusts are both hazardous and require rating for ATEX rated environments.

The standards that describe the specifications to conform to M/H Class are not appropriate for the largest machines in the BVC range; the Ti60 and Ti80 Centurions. These machines, typically with 4-15kW 3 phase multistage exhausters are available in ATEX versions, and can also be supplied with HEPA filtration to a similar specification to M/H Class units. Again, machines can be configured with filtration against dusts hazardous to health and with specifications suitable for ATEX rated environments.

The choices available to the potential customer are not just related to the specification of the vacuum cleaner itself; the specification of the hoses and tools must also be considered to ensure that they are appropriate for the use the machines will be put to.

Quirepace’s extensive knowledge combined with our experienced sales team, UK manufacture, and local service and spares support, means that BVC UK manufactured Industrial Vacuum Cleaners, with their 5 year parts warranty, deliver excellent durability and value for money in the industrial environment.

In addition to portable equipment, Quirepace also

After the drought,

Drainage specialist offers flood resilience checklist to protect businesses sites

Businesses and householders need to urgently review the condition of their drainage systems as the extremely dry summer weather increases the risk of flash flooding, warns Kevin Moon, Managing Director of drainage and wastewater specialist, Lanes Group plc.

The record summer heatwave has left ground baked so hard rainwater cannot soak away and is likely to rapidly build up through surface water run-off to cause localised flooding, with logistics and retail parks, factory sites, and schools

time to protect against the floods

often most at risk.

“Water that would, in normal conditions, percolate into the ground will also surge into surface water drains and sewers that might not be able to cope with the sudden surge,” said Kevin Moon.

He added, “This could make flooding risks worse and result in flooding happening in unexpected places. Rainwater could also be combined with sewage, creating a serious hygiene risk as well as property being flooded.

“Businesses should consider these risks as part of an urgent review of their business continuity plans at a time when extreme weather events are likely to put extreme strain on their sewer systems.

“Making sure that site drainage systems are as in a good condition as possible, in terms of being free of debris that can disrupt water flows and reduce capacity and in good repair, should be a priority in situations like this.”

Lanes Group is the UK's largest drainage and wastewater specialist. It helps thousands of businesses across the UK protect their properties through planned and reactive site drainage cleaning and maintenance services.

The company also delivers sewer unblocking, repair and rehabilitation services for many water companies, including Thames Water, Severn Trent, Northumbrian Water and Scottish Water.

Lanes is urging businesses to consider 7 urgent issues when carrying out a site drainage resilience review:

1) Is your property location at particular risk of localised flooding?

2) Do you have an accurate and up to date map of your site drainage system and assessments of its condition and capacity? These can only be obtained by a drainage specialist carrying out a full site CCTV drainage survey.

3) Is the planned preventative maintenance schedule for the property’s drainage system up to date? Has the drainage system been cleaned in the last 12 months?

4) Are you already experiencing any problems with your drainage system? Does water pool on surfaces around your property after it rains? Do sinks drain and toilets flush properly?

5) Are water courses around your property in optimum condition? Are storm culverts serving your site regularly inspected and cleaning?

6) Has there been any extensive building carried out recently that might affect your site drainage system?

7) Do you have emergency preparations in place if a flood occurs? This may include access to an emergency response service from a reputable drainage specialist and plans to protect assets and deliver services from a different location.

Periods of extreme heat and low rainfall, as experienced across the UK in July and August 2022, can create a ‘perfect storm’ of circumstances that can make flooding risks much worse.

Extremely dry conditions, especially in areas with clay soils, causes the ground to heave, damaging buried pipes.

This has already resulted in an increase in water main bursts, just at a time when drinking water is at its most precious. In some cases, it has resulted in flash flooding.

On Sunday morning, August 14, thousands of homes had water supplies disrupted in the West End area of Southampton after a water main burst, flooding a road and many gardens.

The week before, a wall of water 4ft high flooded a large area in Islington, North London. Two adults and two children had to be rescued, as the floodwater created two sinkholes and damaged 50 properties.

Just like mains water pipes, sewer pipes can also be affected by the seasonal contraction and expansion of clay soils, resulting in pipe joints being displaced, pipes cracking or even collapsing.

Climate change will result in areas with clay soils further north in the UK being affected by this type of ground movement for the first time. This has significant implications for the maintenance of structures and underground assets.

During prolonged periods of dry weather, tree root systems grow more aggressively as they search for water and nutrients, increasing the risk of root infestation of drainage pipes. This can result in pipes becoming partially or even fully blocked by root mass, an occurrence that may only come to light when the rains return and the blockage results in localised flooding.

During long periods of dry weather, flow rates in sewers are reduced, allowing heavier, solid material and debris washed into the system to build up, compromising its capacity.

Again, this is only discovered when the rains return and a sewer surcharges, with water coming to the surface, or it backs up into properties, causing an internal sewage flood.

UNISIG Deep Hole Drilling Systems: Perfection is never an accident

UNISIG produces deep hole drilling machines that are used around the world by nearly every industry imaginable – and at UNISIG, striving for perfection has never been an accident. To secure long-term success, the company decided to further invest in machining its own precision parts rather than subcontracting components, as some of the most critical parts they produced have tolerances and complexity that cannot be made by most machine shops.

To machine their own parts while continuing to grow and develop new products, UNISIG embarked on a new approach to machining which would allow for industryleading CNC machine tool accuracy and performance to be coupled with new technology that would ultimately eliminate manual intervention in machining that prevails in many shops.

“The deliberate connection between engineering, design, and machining improves our product. Our ability to rely on very high accuracy and productivity from our internal machining capacity allows UNISIG to provide more advanced solutions and value to its customers,” quoted Anthony Fettig, CEO of UNISIG. Automated machining was the goal, which required a change in thinking by the team’s engineers, programmers, and machinists. To harness this new direction, UNISIG put in the time and energy to secure the best manufacturing resources available, including several Okuma machine tools.

To begin, UNISIG devised a plan to combine modular fixturing, offline tool setup, and full simulation of the machine, workpiece, and tools to provide a platform of innovation within their machine shop. The team’s intent was to radically improve spindle uptime and exploit the full potential of automated CNC machining, even when the batch size would be only one part.

The first step of the UNISIG strategy was to move away from classic CNC boring mills and adopt the higher productivity potential of CNC horizontal machining centres with twin pallets. After consulting with credible industry sources and leveraging their internal team’s knowledge, the MB-10000H horizontal machining centre from Okuma was selected for medium-sized, highaccuracy part machining.

One of the most important factors in this capital investment was the need to trust the machine accuracy enough to program from its centre of rotation and let the machine run without stopping and manually

impressive, allowing lights-out automatic machining of parts previously not possible for UNISIG to manufacture.

With two machines from Okuma running and performing to expectations, one more opportunity identified for upgrade resulted in the new MA-12500 machine. The OSP Control

common to these three Okuma machines was a big value to the programming and simulation group at UNISIG. “This baseline trust in Okuma is what allows UNISIG to excel at advanced manufacturing,” said Mr. Fetting.

UNISIG will appear at the AMB Show at Stuttgart, Germany

from the 13th-17th September 2022.

verifying the machining process many times during the cycle. The Okuma MB-10000H installation was a success and reinforced UNISIG’s wisdom to focus on automated machining – and the benefits were so extraordinary that UNISIG continued to look to additional Okuma solutions to bring its strategic vision to life.

UNISIG’s next target was large-part machining. Previously, to hold the finished machine tolerances, extensive hand scraping was necessary which added a lot of time and expense to produce these machines. UNISIG established a set of machining accuracy parameters that would eliminate much of this handwork to achieve tolerances.

Working directly with the local distributor, Morris Midwest, UNISIG was able to engage with Okuma America and Okuma Corporation’s technical leadership to tailor the specification of an Okuma MCR-A5CII 35x10 double column machine for the exacting geometry and overall volumetric accuracy needed.

The collective Okuma team ensured the MCR-A5CII machine tool specifications were defined and perfect for UNISIG’s application. A quick-change fixture system was developed by UNISIG to allow two parts up to 3m (10ft) long to be machined simultaneously and removed for setup offline. The results after installation were very

Ensuring quality through optimal cleaning processes

Today, component cleanliness is just as much a quality criterion as dimensional accuracy. It is defined by given particulate – and increasingly also thin-film –cleanliness specifications. Meeting these reliably can be quite a task. For operations to be cost-effective, it is becoming ever-more important to design cleaning processes in-line with user requirements and for reproducible cleaning results.

Regardless what industry sector, parts cleaning today has become one of critical processes in manufacturing. For one, parts must be sufficiently clean for subsequent

processing steps like coating, printing, heat treatment and assembly. For another, product quality and functionality are crucially dependent on clean components. In recent years, the focus has been on removing particulate contamination, including chips produced in machining and forming processes, but also burrs and particles generated from abrasion. Meanwhile, thin-film contamination has also taken on a more prominent role. This is because the tiniest residues of machining oils and emulsions, cleaning media, drawing, forming and release agents, etc., can impair the quality of the joints in joining processes such as laser welding, soldering and bonding.

For the vast majority of parts, specifications regarding particulate and/or filmic cleanliness can be met using wet chemical cleaning processes. The parts are generally cleaned in batches, either in bulk or arranged in part carriers. However, a stable and reproducible process quality and consistently good results can only be attained if the cleaning chemicals as well as the system engineering and process technology are optimally tailored to the cleaning task.

When selecting the cleaning medium, the chemical principle of ‘like solves like’ can serve as a guideline. This

means: polar contaminants such as cooling emulsions, polishing pastes, salts, particles from abrasion and other solids are normally removed using water as a polar cleaning medium in conjunction with pH-neutral, acidic, or alkaline cleaners. For mineral oil-based (organic, nonpolar) contaminants such as machining oils, greases and waxes, solvents like non-halogenated hydrocarbons or chlorinated hydrocarbons are generally used. Modified alcohols (3-butoxy-2-propanols) have lipophilic and hydrophilic properties and are therefore capable of removing both non-polar and polar contaminants to a certain extent.

To determine exactly which cleaning medium is best for effectively removing the contaminants adhering to the respective parts, cleaning trials with original contaminated parts are recommended. In its Test Centers around the world, Ecoclean disposes of a variety of cleaning systems for all types of media. They are used to conduct tests on parts made of metallic materials, plastics, ceramic materials, glass, and combinations thereof. In addition to the achievable cleaning result, the team also checks that the materials of the components to be cleaned are compatible with the cleaning media used.

Samples of the materials used in the manufacture of the range were tested based on ISO 11114-2:2017 in accordance to the European Regulations EC 79/2009 and EU 406/2010 to determine an ‘embrittlement index’ of the material when placed in a saturated environment over extended periods of time. Results have provided a pass rating to the compatibility of the material against Hydrogen.

The Material

The pressure diaphragm and threaded pressure port are machined from a specialist Titanium alloy specifically designed to withstand harsh and demanding environments. This, along with the non-oil-filled sensor and high integrity stainless steel housing results in a robust and versatile unit that offers excellent media compatibility across a range of environments.

Applications

Hydrogen is already used in a growing variety of industries, and although the Oil & Gas sector remains the predominant source of energy supply and usage, there are significant efforts being made to find an alternative.

Pumps & Valves Oliver Twinsafe Valves of many colours

Oliver Twinsafe’s in-house paint shop has been busy applying the finishing paint to an order of several hundred double block and bleed valves that are bound for Saudi Arabia. The customer has requested to have a number of valves custom painted, either fully or partially, with identification markings across the casing and flange; a request that Twinsafe have become experts fulfilling.

The paint shop is fully equipped with the latest shot blast and spray paint booths, curing rooms, and has the capacity of 100’s of valves per day. A wide range of stove cured wet paint systems are available to choose from, they include: zinc rich epoxies, inorganic zinc silicates, epoxy mastics, high temperature silicone, epoxy phenolics, acrylics, and polyurethanes. Also offered are specialist painting techniques such as Thermally Sprayed Aluminium – this is an application of molten metal, usually

aluminium, which gives a very high corrosion resistance for use at very high operating temperatures. NACE inspection is available on request and supplied with full paint certification and reports.

To get a high standard paint finish, the valves complete a thorough process, that include, degreasing and masking the valve to prevent ingress of shot in the bore, shot blasting, priming,

intermediate coats applied, and then finished with a top coat in your chosen RAL or BS colours. Identification markings painted on the valve are always an option too and these can be fully customised to include application of a multi-layer painting process to conform to your own specification.

Engineering ingenuity secures order for Oliver Valves Ltd

Oliver Valves Middle East distributor, GAS (Gas Arabian Services), won a half million-pound order but the sales value wasn’t the only significant highlight – it was Oliver’s SolutionDriven approach and distributor support that helped secure a second order in as many months.

Oliver’s strong working relationship between the end-user and engineering consultants meant that we were able to quickly advise on using a Double Block and Bleed Valve suitable for their application, and not a traditional tubing design.

When GAS received the second enquiry for 150 x Double Block and Bleed Valves, they contacted Oliver Valves and together we looked at ways to

further reduce the cost to the end-user, Saudi Aramco.

With state-of-the-art Research & Development facilities in the UK, our engineering team soon jumped at the challenge. The brief to R&D was simple – save the customer money, even if it meant re-designing a DBB valve. In just 2 days, Oliver’s engineers found the

perfect cost-saving solution; to reduce the face-to-face dimensions of the valve by as much as 17%. This equated to saving the customer an additional 10% – hugely significant for this size of order.

The ingenuity of the Oliver engineering team and our strong sales distributor relationship with GAS led to securing both orders from Saudi Aramco. We’ve been providing valve solutions to the global energy sector for over 40 years, investing heavily in R&D, and our distributor network.

Valve distributors across the world rely on the support, knowledge and expertise of valve manufacturers, and Oliver Valves are testament to this. For more information on distribution and valve solutions, visit our website at: www.valves.co.uk

STUART PH45 TS Stainless Steel Pump

Originally developed for pumping and dispensing beers and other cold beverages, the Stuart PH 45 TSS is an extraordinarily reliable pump manufactured in the UK by Stuart Turner Limited. All key wetted parts such as the pump body, mounting plate and impeller are fabricated from a high grade ANC4B Stainless Steel with comparable performance to AISI 316.

Whilst still a popular choice for the pumping and dispensing of beverages, this peripheral (regenerative) pump has also found use in a wide range of applications pumping aggressive mediums that may otherwise corrode the components used in pumps manufactured from brass or other materials. These applications include washing-disinfection units for reprocessing endoscopes and other medical devices, which use specially developed detergents and disinfectants. Other potential applications include the pumping or circulation of extremely aggressive deionised water as a coolant in a wide range of equipment including lasers, medical and laboratory equipment, pharmaceutical

production and semiconductor manufacturing.

Capable of producing flow rates of up to 38 litres per minute and pressure up to 4 bar, the Stuart PH45 TSS pump features an extremely reliable AC induction motor with an auto-reset thermal trip and is available with extended life EPDM or Viton mechanical seals. Rated for continuous (S1) operation, the pump is fully UKCA/CE conformant and is supplied with a 2-year manufacturer’s warranty.

Traditionally within LNG (Liquified Natural Gas) plants, there are ‘cold service’ applications and cryogenic. Cold service is typically between -29oC (-20oF) and -50oC (-58oF). Valving for cold service do not require cryogenic bonnet extensions, however, they often require smaller extensions to allow for the application of lagging. Lagging types and thicknesses vary from project to project, and can be up to 50mm thick.

The reason for using a bonnet extension with lagged valves is to move the top of the bonnet outside the lagging. Should the valve ever develop a gland leak, the produced fluid will not be trapped within the lagging and cause corrosion issues.

Valves used on cold service are required to be operable at -50oC, that is, be able to be opened and closed and maintain leak tightness through the gland and across the seat at the valve design pressure.

Oliver Valves Limited Slimline Monoflange block & bleed and double block & bleed assemblies, utilise an outside screw and yoke needle valve primary isolate and an inside screw and yoke type needle valves for a second isolate and bleed valve. For cold service applications, these can be supplied with extended bonnets. To validate the two types of needle valves with extended bonnets, Oliver have utilised the rigorous testing requirements called for within the Shell specification 77/300. Unlike some specifications, which only deal with purely the ability of the gland seal to perform at the low temperatures, the Shell specification reviews both the gland seal and the seat seal.

Oliver has performed the 77/300 validation test within its R&D facility, on a 1-1/2” Class 2500 Block &

Bleed Slimline Monoflange with extended bonnets. The performance of all the gland seals at -50oC were well within leak rate BH and seat leaks were zero. Testing was performed at ASME pressure classes 600 and 2500. All the testing was witnessed by a third party.

Instrumentation, measurement, data acquisition & test systems

Established in 2019, GI Systems Ltd.’s team of experts bring 30 years of knowledge and experience gained in the process instrumentation market. “Our knowledge of customer needs and application requirements provide sales and business opportunities for GI Systems supplier companies, each of which have a high reputation for excellence and innovation in test and measurement for their own product area. GI Systems Ltd is the UK representative of Gantner Instruments GmbH (Austria) and is also the UK representative of Manner Sensortelemetrie GmbH (Germany). Both of these are experts in producing solutions for challenging and demanding requirements often found in leading edge product development challenges,” stated Rob Stockham, Director.

GI Systems Ltd.’s partner companies have decades of experience in each of the above specialities which positions the company to work closely with customers on an ‘engineer to engineer’ basis developing solutions for applications, rather than being classed as a ‘catalogue sales shop’.

We asked Rob, what three words best describe the company, he answered, “Firstly I would say measurement because we are familiar with most physical parameters, signals, and processes, understanding the nature of the measurements and how best to handle them effectively. Secondly, integrity because we strive to provide robust and dependable technical solutions to meet customer needs, matched with fair and equitable business relationships to meet commercial obligations and expectations. And thirdly, value as we offer

products and solutions at competitive pricing, building in quality of product performance to improve customer outcomes on investment and life cycle ownership.”

Currently GI Systems Ltd is deeply involved in the automotive sector, carrying out work for electric vehicle development and testing, with its capabilities also being utilised to stretch to both drive train and battery systems in test cells and ‘on vehicle’ testing for drive and half-shaft torque measurement telemetry. “We are also seeing great success in power plant conditioning monitoring using a wide range of flexible IO module architectures. These meet the needs of measuring vibration, stress, strain, temperature, pressure, motor, and electrical parameters to provide plant operators information, dash boards and early warning of component failures. It also helps them plan for required maintenance ahead of unexpected failures that can cause plant shutdowns, loss of revenue and possible safety issues,” added Rob.

Continually broadening its network to reach a wider

IP67/IP69K – Applicable up to 140°C: RHEINTACHO FQ series

The speed sensor for demanding cases

Three new variants with DEUTSCH DT04 connector and M12 connector complement the already well-established sensor series for the detection of speed and direction of rotation. The overmoulding on the back of both connector variants achieves a very good seal. Perfect for use in critical ambient conditions. The FQ series thus achieves protection classes IP67/IP69K up to the plug connection.

Due to different sensor lengths, cable outlet directions and the variety of available connectors, the series offers the user a high degree of flexibility. Adaptation to very individual requirements is thus possible. In addition, if none of the available models fits, RHEINTACHO with its recognised expertise in customised development

will be happy to provide an individual solution.

The electronic design of the FQ series is available

How to detect Mercury, Arsenic, and Selenium in Environmental and Food Samples

PS Analytical (PSA) provides niche analytical instruments for the determination of mercury, arsenic, selenium, antimony and bismuth in many sample matrices including environmental and food and beverage samples.

The presence of these toxic metals in their various forms is of real concern. Increasingly the determination of both total and speciated chemical forms is required and this requirement generates further analytical challenges of sensitivity, selectivity and freedom for interferences.

Coupling Atomic Fluorescence Spectroscopy

(AFS) with either cold vapour generation or hydride generation has been PSA’s core competency for over 30 years. With the addition of analyte separation capability, which allows for speciation studies, PSA offers some powerful tools to help with these endeavours.

For example, the separation of; methyl mercury from inorganic mercury in water, shellfish, seaweed, dairy products, vegetables and grains; the determination inorganic arsenic from less toxic organo arsenic species in water, rice, seaweed are examples of routine applications developed for this growing area of concern.

The team is constantly developing new methods and applications to address market concerns and so if you have a sample you are interested to know more about with, PSA would love to hear from you.

With literally thousands of systems in the field today, and support networks in Europe, USA and SE Asia, PSA offers the ideal package of performance, reliability and support.

Genesis: The birth of a new type of Multiphase Detector

Magnetrol’s revolutionary multiphase detector, Genesis, is a Time Domain Reflectometry Device (TDR) based level detector designed to accurately define and quantify the various layers in multiple interface level measurement.

Encompassing a number of significant engineering developments from Magnetrol’s progressive engineering team, this innovative level detector can deliver a full interface profile of a vessel with performance which surpasses many of the more traditional technologies.

Utilising patented ‘Top–Down’ and ‘Bottom-Up’ signals, long with advanced level detection algorithms, Genesis can be deployed in a wide variety of interface

applications ranging from very light hydrocarbons to water-based media.

For example, Genesis can be used to define the multiple interfaces in a separator vessel (Sand – water – emulsion – oil – gas) with exceptional precision and can even identify the magnitude of any emulsion layer. The device utilises pulses of electromagnetic energy transmitted along a physical probe.

From a ‘Top-Down’ perspective, when a pulse reaches a surface that has a higher dielectric constant than air (εr = 1), a portion of the pulse is reflected. The time of flight of the pulse is then measured via high-speed timing circuitry that provides an accurate measure of the liquid level. The amplitude of the reflection depends on the dielectric constant of the product, with a higher

dielectric constant yielding a larger reflection. In addition to sending high frequency energy down the probe to detect upper (or total) level, the Genesis sends energy up the probe to detect various other levels that may be present; including the top of an emulsion layer, bottom of an emulsion layer (water level) and sediment.

Key features:

n 24 VDC interface detector with four (4) 4-20mA outputs for convenient control of top level, top of emulsion, water level, and sediment

n Concurrent Top-Down and Bottom-Up signal generation

n Changing media characteristics have no effect on level measurement

n No moving parts in the process, reducing measurement errors and downtime

n Detects four levels with one top-mounted process connection

n Probe designs are available up to +400F/1,000psi (+200C/70 bar)

The German photonics industry has a leading global role to lose

The economic policy spokesperson of the B’90/Green parliamentary group, Dieter Janecek visited the Graefelfingbased laser manufacturer TOPTICA. Not only complex export controls and the situation on the job market pose high challenges for mediumsized businesses, but also the multitude of regulatory interventions.

Dieter Janecek, Member of the German Bundestag, is the spokesman for the digital economy and digital transformation for the Bündnis 90/Die Grünen parliamentary group. In this role, he visited the near-Munich-based company TOPTICA.

During the discussion with the Member of the Bundestag Janecek, the two CEOs Dr. Kaenders and Dr. Renner discussed German’s special role as a high-tech country, especially regarding the increasingly important quantum technology, in the development of which TOPTICA has played a central role internationally for years. The successful recruitment and transfer of skilled personnel from abroad was an important topic. In particular, the unclear regulations in export control and sanction testing were addressed. These are necessary, but lead to months, often years of uncertainty for the company, and thus impair the strongly export-oriented German hightech SMEs in their globally leading role.

C&C Fabrications Steel the show

In this issue of Industrial Process News, we are pleased to announce C&C Fabrications as our Steel Fabrication Company of the Month.

C&C Fabrications is a remarkable UK manufacturing success story. It has transformed from humble beginnings – founded by Chris Wallage and Chris Butler in Wallage’s dads’ garage in 1996 – to become a multi-million-pound business and one of the most well-known and respected steel fabrication specialists in the UK.

Based in Ferrybridge, West Yorkshire, C&C Fabrications don’t just specialise in one area, but work with several sectors, including manufacturing, retail, warehousing and logistics, office, commercial, industrial and engineering. Its high-quality services and customer care are well known throughout the industry, attracting a wide client portfolio, which includes retail giant Next, international packaging company D S Smith, Kongsberg Automotive and J Tomlinson construction. “We also do vast amounts of work for the forklift industry for companies such as Toyota Linde, Dawson Group, and Spartan which we supply backrests light guards and any welding repairs they require and much more,” states Chris Wallage, Managing Director.

Through all stages of production, C&C Fabrications ensure the highest quality service. Alongside its main products that it can manufacture using steel fabrication such as racking, staircases, mezzanine floors, edge protection and fall protection, truss, shelving solutions, loading dock fit out and access point solutions, C&C can also manufacture bespoke items. These have the added benefits of being more durable and resistant to corrosion compared to other methods.

to prevent slips or falls. Noted as one of the industry’s most innovative safety accessories, Laddermate incorporates a practical approach that is simple in design, inexpensive and incredibly safe. C&C Fabrications has supplied thousands of Laddermate’s to customers all over the world over the last 10 years across multiple industries from telecoms, electricity companies, leading satellite TV companies and more. Its true testament to its success is that C&C consistently deliver an honest, integral and innovative service to all clients. This is even more apparent now given its current growth phase and will power them well into the future. One part of the company’s next growth phase includes Chris Wallage

Of course, working within the steel fabrication business means you must have the capabilities to work across several industries to cater to each specific steel fabrication need. The team at C&C fabricate several products, from mezzanine floors to safety barriers, machine guards, suspended walkways, platforms, and much more. “Our work is highly skilled with our key strengths in our ability to understand the needs of customers, and to create high-quality cost-effective solutions that exceed their expectations. The main services we provide are bespoke fabrication, specialist steel fabrication, laser cutting, powder coating, as well as a fitting service,” adds Chris.

Bespoke fabrication is a key offering from C&C, and is carried out using state-of-the-art machinery and equipment. This coupled with their expert skills gives them the capability to deliver numerous fabrication techniques and bespoke metal solutions that meet all necessary regulations.

C&C’s laser cutting service is carried out by its own highly skilled experts and machine operators trained to use the latest laser machines to cut precisely through a variety of metal such as steel, stainless steel, and aluminium. Eliminating any potential for human error, laser cutting gives a greater finish compared with other methods such as metal punching. It also allows for bespoke, intricate shapes to be cut at an affordable price. With over 23 years’ experience in metal fabrication and laser cutting, C&C ensures customers receive the highest-quality service alongside the best knowledge and expertise in the industry.

The company’s powder coating service is ideal for creating a consistent finish on metal, helping to keep metal products in line with business branding. The process involves a coating that is applied electrostatically as a free-flowing powder and then dried with heat. Compared with standard paint, the powder creates a tough layer, which makes the fabricated metal more durable and doesn’t require a solvent to stick to the metal.

Alongside these available services, C&C also own the rights to Laddermate, a sought-after safety device for ladders that is designed to hold them at a right angle

taking the helm. He comments, “In 2018, I started the process of buying out my business partner – Chris Butler, and now we’re planning for the future of C&C Fabrications, which includes moving to bigger premises to allow us to put both factories under one roof. This will make us more efficient and streamlined and allow us to invest in new technology.”

To support this next phase, C&C has also launched an employee reward package. From 1 July 2022, each employee received an 8% pay rise, as well as a reduction in hours, seeing the entire company move to a 37-hour working week. Some more additions include from 1 January 2023, each employee will be granted an extra day off for their birthday, as well as additional holidays from December 2023 as the site closes between Christmas and New Year to allow employees more time with their families.

Staying true to its promise to continue providing high-quality products, C&C is also investing in new kit and a new 20,000+ sq. ft. workshop. Every aspect

of the company’s growth plan is aimed towards the future success of the business as it moves towards achieving a £6 million turnover by 2026.

In closing, Chris explains the next steps for the business. “We aim to be the market leading metal fabricator in the UK, providing a complete, one stop, end-to-end, design, prototyping and manufacturing service. So, to help us take the business to the next level, following a management buyout, we’re investing in our people, our equipment, and capabilities. I’m proud that we’re changing the face of fabrication in the industry as well as improving employee pay and conditions! Our team is our business and so it’s important for us to reward their loyalty and hard work and to involve them in the future of the business.”
