Massive demand for Terraflex rubber landscaping products

Terraflex is an award-winning company that produces a range of high-quality products using rubber obtained from recycling used vehicle tyres.

Included in their portfolio of products is a selection

of rubber surfacing solutions ideal for the garden and landscaping industry.

Their flexible paving solution in particular was a major hit at SALTEX. This bonded surface comprises a 50/50 mix of rubber and decorative stone aggregate which offers a durable, porous and slipresistant pavement solution.

Coloured rubber chippings can also be utilised as a stylish, low-maintenance and plant-friendly alternative to garden mulch, or as a colourful, decorative solution for dressing flowerbeds, pathways or landscaping areas.

“We attended the show with a couple of new products and have been blown away by the interest they received,” commented Shane who represented Terraflex at SALTEX, “Customer perception about using rubber in the garden has changed. People are

starting to realise the many benefits and versatility that rubber can offer compared to the usual materials.”

Terraflex customers can expect high-quality products at competitive prices. The company serves both retail and trade customers throughout Ireland, the UK and beyond.

When it comes to Solar shading and glare control, unfortunately, sunblinds are often an ‘afterthought’. The building will have been designed and built with so called solar efficient glass only to find out that shading systems are still required as the glass itself often does not do what it says on the tin. By that time, most blinds will look like a ‘bolt-on-job’ and stick out like a sore thumb, destroying the clear lines the architect had intended.

Most, but not all!

At Reflex-Rol UK, a division of De Leeuw Ltd, with experience going back to 1983, we pride ourselves in designing retrofit shading systems that blend in superbly with a building’s windows. Our blind materials/fabrics are thin, meaning we can accommodate a 3 or 4 metre drop in a cassette/headbox of a mere 55 x 54mm. These cassettes can be powder coated or anodised to any colour specified so we can match window frames/wall finishes and make it appear as a fully integrated system with the building. The same size cassette/headbox can be used for either manually operated systems or electrically driven blinds.

Site Equipment Temporary weather screening

Base Structures has recently completed the installation of a series of removable and adaptable temporary fabric screens to aid site access at a prominent city centre construction site.

To aid protection from rapidly deteriorating weather conditions, the client was looking for temporary screening to secure a 15-storey office building, guaranteeing their programme of work could continue uninterrupted and meet pre-arranged turnaround times.

To meet the requirements of the proposal, Base Structures installed forty-four screens across the length of the building with a total fabric area of 1,800m². Designed to withstand all relevant British Standard wind loadings and fire retardancy requirements, new attachment methods were devised with the client to circumvent existing columns not being appropriate. The results were cost effective, versatile, and offered much more flexibility when considering site conditions and access requirements.

Base Structures is committed to the upcycling and re-use of tensile fabric that has not yet reached its end

Aesthetics without compromise

In this issue of Building and Facilities News we are pleased to announce Profab Access as our Bespoke Access Panels & Access Panel Solutions Company of the Year.

Profab Access is a leading UK manufacturer of riser doors and access panel solutions for ceilings, walls, and partitions. Together with Bilco UK and Howe Green, Profab Access forms Access 360, which provides a total manufacturing solution for roof, ceiling, wall and floor access products to the construction industry.

Here Marcus Parnham, Profab Access’ Commercial Director, discusses the company’s achievements throughout 2022, its ambitions for 2023, and what it means to be awarded Company of the Year.

“In the autumn of 2022, Access 360 opened its new headquarters in the West Midlands to significantly increase Profab Access’ manufacturing capabilities, whilst simultaneously facilitating greater bespoke engineering opportunities. Situated on the i54 Business Park, the state-of-the-art manufacturing site spans over 67,000ft2 and features the very latest in automated engineering technology. The new site will enable Profab Access to deliver the highest repeatable product quality and ensure first class safety for employees. The opening of our new UK headquarters also marks a major step forward in Access 360’s dedicated sustainability strategy, as part of our continued commitment to improving the environmental efficiency of both our operations and products. The significant investment is integral to our long-term growth, accelerating our expansion throughout the residential and commercial markets for a diverse range of construction projects including infrastructure, healthcare and education.”

Of course, Profab Access is always committed to continuous product innovation to ensure it consistently provides architects, specifiers and contractors with the highest standards of performance and compliance. This includes the PRECISION Adjustable Frame, which demonstrates the highest standards of innovation and fire safety. The first product of its kind for the UK market, the frame offers professionals a unique method of installation for riser doors that eliminates the requirement for additional materials such as packers and intumescent mastic application. It is also the only adjustable frame product to be bidirectionally fire tested and certified by an accredited third party for up to two hours.

Supplied as standard with Profab Access’ INTEGRA 4000 FR Series Riser Doors and VEGA 1500 FR Series Riser Doors, the frame’s unique construction enables it to be fully self-adjusted to the full size of the structural opening. Marcus explained further, “While reducing cost and time implications associated with installing these additional materials, the unique construction of the PRECISION Adjustable Frame also overcomes any potential gaps in compliance by eliminating the reliance on the correct use

of packer or correct thickness of intumescent mastic bead, which may pose a potential risk to the overall fire integrity of the construction. The integral factory applied intumescent strips provide fire stopping between the wall and frame, which when combined with an acoustic FS1000 foam seal, provides professionals with a cost efficient and sustainable material that contains no halogen compounds and does not emit toxic gas when heated. This ensures the safety of building occupants in the event of a fire.”

With over 20 years’ experience in manufacturing & supplying the highest quality access solutions, Profab Access’ extensive portfolio delivers first class safety and functionality. This supports professionals in achieving compliance with all relevant regulations, without compromising on aesthetics.

Driven by continuous product innovation and development, Profab Access continues to set the standard for innovation and accreditation and is committed to continuous fire testing and certification regimes by accredited third parties.

And, it is this dedication that ensures architects, specifiers and contractors achieve the highest standards of construction excellence and fire performance from the initial design stages right through to installation and maintenance.

The future looks bright for Profab Access with 2023 set to be an incredible year for the business. Marcus elaborates on this, “Throughout 2023, we will be utilising the very latest advancements in automated technology at our new headquarters to accelerate our comprehensive new product pipeline to support our customers in achieving the highest standards of specification. This includes extending our bespoke manufacturing capabilities so that we can support construction professionals in meeting the most demanding site requirements, without having to compromise on compliance or aesthetics.

Furthermore, this year, with the support of our parent company, Tyman UK & Ireland, which is a division of Tyman, we will also be bolstering our commitment to improving the sustainability of both our operations and products. As part of Tyman UK and Ireland’s three strategic pillars:

Focus, Define, Grow, we are committed to achieving year-on-year improvement in revenue of products with demonstrable sustainability benefits in line with one or more of the United Nations Sustainability Goals. This not only relates to our own products, but those of our fabrication partners. Throughout 2023, we will be working to reduce our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50% by 2026 to achieve our goal of being carbon neutral by 2030 (Scope 1 and 2 emissions). By 2026, we have also pledged to achieve 100% sustainable packaging and generate zero avoidable waste to landfill.”

In closing we asked Marcus how the company felt receiving the award, he answered, “We are extremely privileged to have been awarded Building and Facilities News Company of the Year for 2022 as a reflection of our continued commitment to supporting construction professionals and we look forward to working with our customers throughout 2023.”

GRAMM SmogStop® Barrier

The world’s first roadside pollution barrier proven to reduce hazardous traffic emissions highlighted at Highways UK.

GRAMM, the UK leading specialist in design, supply & installation of acoustic barriers, is now the exclusive EU partner for SmogStop Barrier. SmogStop reduces air & noise pollution levels in surrounding hotspots from major roads & highways.

The patented aerodynamic design reduces pollution levels by enhancing dispersion so residents can breathe easier. At the same time, a proprietary coating on the barrier actually breaks down NOx & VOCs, transforming them into harmless by-products.

SmogStop angled baffle & double-walled design directs traffic emissions between the two walls, where a photo catalytic coating treats the pollutants. Secondly generating vortexes & enhance vertical mixing of emissions with clean air, further decreasing pollution.

The proprietary coating we’ve developed transforms smog-producing NOX and VOCs into harmless gases and water, powered purely by sunlight. 1km of SmogStop can remove 16t of NOX

Highway drainage joins fast lane

A new national highways surveying centre developed by Lanes Group plc promises to provide more effective ways to assess and maintain drainage assets along UK’s road network. The new service is designed to give construction and maintenance clients, and National Highways, more sustainable and faster ways to map drainage assets and check their condition.

Ben Forsyth, Head of Highways at Lanes, says, “Now, more than ever, our highways clients want drainage survey data that’s accurate, consistent, rich in detail and delivered quickly. As adverse weather events become more unpredictable & volatile, there is much less time to wait. It’s a reason Lanes has created a new national centre for drainage survey data processing.”

Located in Manchester, the HADDMS and DDMS compliant highways surveying service makes full use of cloud-based data systems for accurate and responsive survey processing. It also underpins effective maintenance and rehabilitation interventions. For example, Lanes uses recycler jet vac tankers, which are more sustainable and productive, to support survey teams and clean highway drainage systems. All major highway survey, cleaning, and pipe lining projects carried out by Lanes are now supported by the dedicated survey centre, including smart motorway improvement programmes on the M4, M5, M6 and M60.

UKALA-AICO announce partnership

The UK Association of Letting Agents (UKALA) has partnered with Aico, a manufacturer of choice for life safety products.

UKALA is a professional association that supports letting management agent members to be successful, stay compliant and provide a high-quality service. The organisation represents members’ interests across the UK, works constructively with various government departments and sits on many committees and policy input bodies.

Ever-evolving legislative changes require all rented accommodations in England to have a carbon monoxide alarm fitted to a fuelburning appliance. In rented domestic premises, a category LD2 fire detection system must be installed within the residence. A Category LD2 system, as defined by BS5839-6 2019, means that

mains-powered alarms with a sealed tamper-proof battery backup should be installed in the living areas and escape routes, with a heat alarm in the kitchen, and all alarms should be interlinked.

Tony Boyle, National Sales Manager at Aico, said of the partnership, “We are delighted to be working with an organisation like UKALA, which strives to improve standards in the private rental sector through professional development and provision of information and help. In a climate of constant regulatory change, it is clear UKALA does a fantastic job of keeping its members up to date with the latest requirements for compliance and improving the safety of residents. With over 4 million privately rented homes in England alone, it’s encouraging to see organisations like UKALA improving standards within the sector.”

Property protection you can trust

Aico products are supplied to the UK’s professional electrical distribution network. UKALA members can procure Aico products through these channels through an agreement set up separately by the organisation.

With these recent legislative changes and further changes on the horizon concerning issues such as retrofit and disrepair, UKALA members are welcomed and encouraged to register for Aico’s free, award-winning, CPDaccredited training using the link: www.aico.co.uk/our-services/ expert-installer-training/

New small duct heating and cooling system set to tackle rising temperatures in UK homes

A new small duct heating, cooling and ventilation system by US manufacturer Unico Systems has been launched in the UK.

The Unico System, which is installed in half a million homes and businesses throughout the US, provides heating, cooling and ventilation along with improved air quality and well-being.

The decision to make the Unico System more widely available to UK residents follows a series of recordbreaking summers, as well as increasing demand for greater climate control.

The near silent, system, which operates at under 30 decibels, uses aspiration to deliver draft free heating and cooling ensuring temperature differentials are no greater than one degree throughout the home.

Richard Soper CBE, of Unico Systems UK, said,“The US is used to much larger variances in temperature, meaning that domestic ventilation and air conditioning is often installed as standard. As a result, the Unico

system is fully adapted to the needs of domestic properties; providing effective climate control, but also operating at a barely audible sub-30 decibels. For self-builders and renovators this provides a unique opportunity to give occupiers the same level of climate control and comfort that they’ve come to expect in cars, hotels and gyms, no matter the season.”

Dementia-friendly designs

Dementia is often considered in the context of care homes and managed environments home to elderly residents. However, this misses that dementia affects people differently and to varying degrees over years. Agerelated cognitive decline can take other forms, affecting memory, reasoning and independence. We live in an ageing society, where people with such conditions are thankfully able do more than simply stay at home. Like anyone else, they may go out with carers and their families to shops, restaurants, garden centres and numerous public amenities.

Designing to accommodate people with different cognitive needs is not only a concern for care managers; it’s increasingly a matter for the mainstream.

Castle Gates & Automation offer a bespoke service for their gates and can make to measure to match any specific requirement or design. Each gate is designed with the main priorities in mind including security, privacy, aesthetics, or a combination of all three, and comes complete with installation and servicing.

The main gate options are wooden, metal, metal framed gates clad in wood or composite. All gates have the option to be manually operated

or automated and there are options to either have motors above-ground with arms attached to each of the gate leaves on the house side so they are visible, or underground so they are invisible. Sliding gates can also be an option if the ground is level.

In addition, all automated gates come with remote control fobs for access. There is an option for a keypad entry system to be installed if you would prefer or even an audio or video system so you can see who is at the gate before you let them in. Choose from GSM audio/ video intercoms, or wired audio/wired video intercoms, each offering different benefits to suit your individual requirements and needs.

CCTV is another great way to keep your property safe 24/7, and is of particular use when you are not there as even the sight of a camera mounted onto the side of your house or gate can deter any intruders away. Castle Gates & Automation can supply cameras for both short and long range and wide-angle views covering the entire perimeter of your property.

SALTEX launch for Greenbuster Weed Brushes

SALTEX 2022 saw Greenbuster Weed Brushes introduced to the professional mainstream by UK importer Trp Imports Ltd. A small stand was manned by managing director, Jonathan Pearson, and manufacturer from Kwern in Denmark, Jan Neilsen.

Two busy and successful days resulted in much interest, new dealer appointments and stock sold. Jonathan said, “This was our first time exhibiting at SALTEX since it moved from Windsor and it was great to be back with an exciting new product. Visitors were not only interested in the Greenbuster

DrainTalent

concept but very impressed with the build quality at this price point.”

The Greenbuster product range concentrates on the

It’s every grounds manager’s struggle; to optimise the moisture levels and create the best playing surface no matter what weather condition. Meanwhile, sports managers expect perfect playing fields and the facility managers, the club stakeholders and society expect sustainable solutions and policies.

As a result of climate change, typically, longer dry and hot periods are interspersed with heavy rainfall in short periods. We have to act on that, act on our water usage, and act on the way we are using sports pitches. That’s the point where DrainTalent comes in…

With DrainTalent, you have a unique soil management system, ensuring 24/7 optimal conditions and balancing the moisture content within the soil. The system automatically extracts water at high speeds during rain, infiltrates water through the soil in periods of drought and refreshes air in the soil. The result: high-quality surfaces, no cancellations, and increased use. This is done with huge water savings and fewer fungicides compared to traditional irrigation. It makes the life of the grounds manager a lot less stressful and managers and stakeholders satisfied.

DrainTalent won the innovation award in the Netherlands in 2019 and was attending Saltex in 2022 for the first time.

Hörmann high speed sectional doors keep things moving at Audi

Helping to accelerate the movement of vehicles through a busy handover bay, six high speed sectional doors from Hörmann UK have been installed at Audi in Bradford. The installation was carried out by Hörmann partner Crucial Engineering and formed part of a retrofit programme, with the new doors being chosen specifically as they provide high speed operation, security, and excellent thermal efficiency.

Replacing a previous complex installation of a sectional door plus a high-speed door fitted to each entrance and exit, the installation of the Hörmann doors solved the operational issues created by this set

up and provided Audi with a simple, fast solution.

Three ALR F42 aluminium glazed doors were installed at the entrance to the handover bay, with three SPU F42 sectional doors being fitted to the exits.

Constructed from a lightweight, yet strong, aluminium framework, the ALR F42 glazed doors consist of large, clear glazing panels bringing maximum light into the working environment and creating an unimpeded view.

The glazing panels include the unique Hörmann

DURATEC coating which protects the panes from scratching and damage caused by cleaning over the long-term, providing a permanently clear view.

The SPU F42 sectional doors have a hardwearing Stucco textured interior finish, with a micro grain exterior creating an elegant surface finish to complement the building’s modern façade. The doors are all coated with RAL 9006 White aluminium.

Crittall T60 is a Camden classic

Crittall Window’s T60 Thermal Break System features as part of the £40 million renovation of the KOKO iconic music venue in Camden, London.

Known as Camden Palace from 1982 until its 2004 purchase and extensive restoration when its name changed to KOKO, it serves as one of the premier live music venues in London.

Severely damaged by fire in 2020 KOKO reopened in April of this year following a multimillion-pound refurbishment designed by architects Archer Humphreys.

Style and performance

The decision to incorporate T60 into the Koko project reflects the system’s ability to offer the same aesthetic as Crittall’s well-known steel-framed windows but with an enhanced thermal performance.

Crittall’s T60 is able to meet the most exacting thermal credentials. The window features an advanced high density glass fibre reinforced polyurethane isolator as a thermal barrier. This, together with housing high

performance double or triple glazing up to 32mm wide, ensures the system surpasses the requirements of current regulations while at the same time providing contemporary levels of comfort, particularly in harsher weather conditions where traditional steel windows may not have previously been sufficient. T60 can provide a thermal rating of Uw 0.8 W/m²/K or 0.14 BTU.

All this is achieved within the same slender profile for which Crittall steel windows are duly celebrated, ensuring the maximum amount of daylight entering the building, which in itself is a contributor to sustainability and reduces energy consumption. And steel, of course, is itself a 100% recyclable material.

“More and more people are considering the thermally broken T60 as their first choice when planning a new build or a refurbishment,” says Crittall Managing Director, Russell Ager. And if there is a heritage element to a development the window because it offers the same sightlines as traditional rolled steel products, is finding favour with planning authorities.

Portable Pull Tester Manufacturing Company of the Month

The future of digital pull-out testing

In this issue of Building and Facilities News we are pleased to announce Hydrajaws Ltd as our Portable Pull Tester Manufacturing Company of the Month.

Now based in Tamworth, Staffordshire, Hydrajaws was originally established in 1960 in Birmingham to manufacture work holding fixtures for the machine tool industry. In 1988, Royston Morgan purchased the family-run company, where he developed and grew the company from its initial idea for the portable pull tester that was designed and manufactured in 1985.

Hydrajaws is now known as the world’s largest and most trusted manufacturer of hydraulic pull testers for load testing anchors and fixings. In December 2021, the company moved its HQ to its purpose built 20,000ft2 building to cater for its continued growth and production expansion.

“In today’s world of high safety awareness, Hydrajaws is proud to have led the way in testing equipment and techniques that have potential to save lives across the world. The high quality and robust nature of our products has seen demand outgrow our supply capacity, hence our investment in a new HQ operation, helping

to ensure continuity of supply and services to our customers.

The all-new building not only future proofs demand but also enables a more efficient and cost-effective flow for our manufacturing and distribution process plus the establishment of more comprehensive training, research and development, service and testing facilities to serve our growing global customer base,” stated Stephen Hynes, Managing Director of Hydrajaws.

Hydrajaws has implemented some significant developments over the last 12 months. Alongside the appointment of a new MD with international expertise, the company has also rapidly expanded its international distributor and partner network, as well as reorganising sales resources and restructuring to focus on export. “We have a new multilingual website with e-commerce capability for online

Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning

sales growth and will be implementing an e-learning platform for overseas customers to receive training on our products,” added Stephen. Hydrajaws’ products mainly cater towards OEMs, end users in the anchors and fixings sector, as well as engineered safety lifeline system installers. Offering truly portable fixings testing equipment is a niche product provided by only a handful of manufacturers around the world. Hydrajaws is a well-known brand whose testers are trusted by the industry worldwide for their reliability, quality and longevity. Stephen commented, “Our testers offer a detachable gauge which allows the tester to be continually used, with an alternative gauge, while one is with a service agent for annual calibration. We offer a wide range of adaptors and load spreading bridges to accommodate the majority of fixing testing requirements. We can even advise on specialist testing requirements and offer bespoke solutions.”

Since the initial pull tester was designed, significant developments have taken place, not only to the base design, but also to be able to handle capacities of 25kN. Added to the range has been a wide range of adapters and accessories for fixing types from proprietary manufacturers plus additional product for specialised testing, delivering up to 500kN. The full range enables the testing of a simple plastic plug through to M36 heavy duty construction anchors. An important facet of the business is the testing of scaffolding anchor points where

any potential for failure can have catastrophic consequences.

Another accolade of Hydrajaws is that it was the first to introduce a sophisticated app that can record all pull testing results including GPS location and multiple anchors per test report. Stephen explained, “Since 2014, Hydrajaws has taken the lead in the digital world. Our app allows testing to be carried out and the results immediately shared live to a mobile platform or laptop anywhere in the world. Digital reports include date, time, GPS location and graphs showing the duration of the test, pass or fail results, plus notes and photos taken on site. It allows the testing of multiple anchors per test report. The app is covered by a comprehensive US patent.”

This year Hydrajaws celebrates its 35th Anniversary, a remarkable achievement solidified by its continuous success and growth. Looking ahead, Hydrajaws will continue to actively grow its export sales as well as increasing its UK market share and launch some new and exciting developments.

To celebrate its incredible 35 years in business, Hydrajaws will be hosting an Open Day to celebrate and combining it with the Official Opening of its new HQ on 18th May 2023.

Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, Pumps & Valves

Decarbonising hot water generation with solar thermal in commercial properties

by 322kg.

To ensure system longevity and return on investment, fluid within the solar collectors must be correctly managed.

Adveco is the hot water specialist for the commercial built environment and a leader in the design and supply of solar thermal applications.

Solar thermal deploys panels with fluid that captures and efficiently transfers solar energy as heat indirectly to the domestic hot water (DHW) system. As a high-temperature renewable source of DHW, Adveco solar thermal lends itself to working in conjunction with not only conventional gas heating but also other renewable technologies including Adveco’s air source heat pumps which can be used to provide pre-heat to solar thermal. This enables a variety of bespoke, hybrid applications to be considered to meet the varied demands of commercial buildings.

Whether a commercial hot water system uses gas or electricity, it

will require a preheat source to reduce carbon emissions.

As a rule of thumb, new builds will invariably default to heat pumps. In contrast, properties with an existing gas connection will see greater advantages from the installation of solar thermal which can be extremely effective in reducing reliance on the gas boiler. Even so, offsetting costs in direct electric systems through use of solar thermal remains extremely advantageous.

Neither heat pumps nor solar thermal technology currently offers a standalone response for the year-round high temperatures, high volume and peak demands seen in commercial systems.

Solar thermal can be combined with a heat pump (which is used to supply initial preheat) to top up heat to a minimum of 60°C required for commercial applications without using direct electric immersions.

A more compact alternative to solar PV for DHW, solar thermal is extremely advantageous where roof space is at a premium due to competition with other heating and ventilation systems on a project. This is especially true of urban projects where solar thermal’s silent operation is also desirable.

Whichever approach is chosen, making an accurate assessment of the needs and limitations of a building first is critical for the correct sizing of the solar thermal system.

For carbon reduction & significant savings on running costs

A commercial system sized to support an occupancy of 50 will typically require 12-24 Rugged 2.24m2 flat plate collectors, whilst smaller systems servicing up to 12 occupants will employ just three to four panels.

Sized and installed correctly, each Adveco solar thermal collector can contribute up to 1,400kWh per annum, providing electricity savings of £300 and more importantly reducing emissions of CO2

If left in the panel it can overheat, stagnate and leave collectors irreparable. Adveco solar thermal systems avoid this by incorporating drain back into all its solar system designs. This gravity flow approach reduces pump capacity requirements and energy use of pump station to a minimum and will automatically drain fluid if power is cut without the need for working components. This makes solar thermal systems with drainback low maintenance with long operational lifespans. Fluid refresh is, on average, required every eight years but may last much longer.

With more than 800 systems deployed across the UK, Adveco’s solar thermal systems are an effective renewable which today offers clear cost savings for more rapid return on investment and a proven path to incorporating sustainability into the annual operation of commercial properties.

Your Toolkit needs a Solenoid Valve Operating Magnet!

The Solenoid Valve Operating Magnet is a tool that converts electrically operated solenoid valves into hand operated valves in seconds to allow service engineers to operate valves manually. It can be used in any application where a Solenoid Valve is installed. One of its key functions is that it eliminates the need to wire up the system or even worry about the correct voltage. Furthermore, its is also useful when recovering refrigerant from a plant that has already been decommissioned and power has been removed.

Fridgenius Ltd is a family run business that have been supplying National and International Distributors and Partners the Solenoid Valve Operating Magnets since 1995. Suitable for use in Refrigeration, HVAC, oil and gas installations, this innovative tool is an invaluable addition to any HVAC service engineer’s toolkit.

Described as a ‘superb product’ by fellow engineers in the industry, it’s small and easy to use, shaped like a cotton reel. It comes available in four sizes of 10mm, 15mm, 18mm and 20mm, and because of its fast and efficient ease of use it has helped hundreds of engineers save hours on jobs.

How it works

The magnet operates by lifting the stem assembly and plunger to actuate the valve. It can then be used to assist during installation, recovery of refrigerants, test and troubleshoot, or manually activate and control a direct connected or pilot operated 2-way solenoid, 3-way reclaim or 4-way reversing valve. Fridgenius Ltd is well respected in the industry, so much so, it was chosen as one of the newest sponsors of World Refrigeration Day for WREFD22, helping to play its part in raising awareness of how important cooling is for everyday life.

New year ‘hack’ for gaining office confidence

No need to choose between hospital infection & scalding

Stuart Gizzi, MD of Thermostatic Mixing Valves (TMV) specialist Inta, writes: A recent letter to the Journal of Hospital Infection: Thermostatic Mixing Valves (TMVs) in health care: Pseudomonas aeruginosa HCAI vs scalding risk – more can be done, sets out an argument that in some cases there has to be a choice between potential scalding and infection in hospitals, where high levels of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were detected in a few taps that were fitted with TMVs.

The solution to infection control in water supplies taken by the Frimley Health National Health Service (NHS) Foundation Trust, which is the subject of the article, seems to be to be removing the valves, after a risk assessment, which of course reunites users with potentially scalding water. Since the first guidance was produced in 1997, and even the most recent edition published in 2017, TMV technology has moved on and manufacturers, such as ourselves, have developed

products to alleviate situations where water-borne infections can build up when an outlet is not regularly used, or doesn’t flow long or hot enough to kill bacteria. The newer products are far more complex than the original TMV3 valves and have the facility to be able to thermally disinfect the entire fitting, from the cold water check valve all the way through to the outlet, to kill bacteria.

Sitting comfortably at your office desk can have a bigger impact than simply supporting your posture. A poor quality office chair may result in aches and pains and worse still; long term back issues. However, slouching at your desk may also have an impact on your levels of confidence.

When surveyed, office desks and chairs often alternate for the top spot of important pieces of office equipment. Creating the right level of comfort and support is paramount but so, it seems, is how you sit. Research from the Ohio State University showed that students sitting upright had more confidence compared to those who were slouching.

Wellbeing in the workplace will continue to be a key theme to address in 2023. “While the majority of time in the workplace is still spent sitting down there are several ways to encourage movement,” says Helen Beebe, Managing Director of AJ Products (UK) Ltd. “We all know about taking the stairs instead of using a lift but other options are sit-stand desks or using active seating such as balance balls or stools. Simple changes such as placing communal facilities away from the main desk areas will encourage movement or devising different zones – breakout rooms, social and creative areas, quiet zones – which encourage people to change where they work throughout the day.

“If you’re looking to start the new year with renewed confidence in the workplace consider sitting up straighter in your chair. Making sure your chair supports your lower and middle back is key, keep your screen at eye level and no slouching if you want to gain confidence and come across as more self-assured in the workplace.”

Based in Wimbish, near Saffron Walden in Essex, Bluerun manufactures quality, bespoke joinery items and everything is made to order, nothing is ‘off the shelf.’ Dee commented, “We manufacture items for the commercial market from door and window packers, to shopfronts, reception desks, mainframes, pub doors, and years ago we even made a trebuchet for Stansted Mountfitchet castle!”

Of course, the company has the capabilities to manufacture most things from timber, hardwood, softwood, panels and sheet material. Some common items Bluerun Ltd manufacture for the domestic building market include windows, doors (exterior and interior), bi-folding doors, staircases, bespoke storage units and wardrobes, all of which come with the option of being sprayed in primer or to a finish.

If you’re looking for items made from both hard and softwood or even veneered and painted panels, Bluerun can reproduce an array of items including replacement sashes, where it can manufacture a brand new one on a like for like basis, so the mouldings will

match. “Similarly, if a domestic client has found an image of a door, for example, that they would like us to reproduce, we can usually do that. Recently we have started using a glass supplier that can supply us with stained glass effect units, complete with leading that has been aged and soldered, which looks absolutely breathtaking,” added Dee.

Bluerun only produce purpose made joinery to client's drawings and specifications. Its unrivalled level of customer services means that free quotations are normally provided within 2-3 days or less, and the company

can usually deliver a quick turnaround of any manufactured items required. And, because it has an experienced spray operative in charge of a modern spray paint and lacquer facility, articles can leave the factory in a fully finished state, ready for installation on site.

2022 was a great year for the company in terms of revenue and new business. It has managed to maintain a strong conversion rate despite

the current economic crisis and has found that enquiries for larger jobs as opposed to ‘single window’ types of jobs has been more popular especially from domestic clients which mimics that of its regular commercial clients.

What really sets

Bluerun apart is that since its establishment it has never used computer aided machinery for any designs. Crafted to perfection, all items are finished by hand, drawings are prepared with pencil and paper, and everything that is manufactured by the team has been done so with the utmost attention to detail. It also has the ability to obtain colour matches of any paint colours for clients that would prefer something sprayed to a finish.

Apart from needing the item to fit out its workshop doors upon completion, there is no limit to any project that Bluerun will endeavour to take on. Inspired by a challenge, Bluerun will do its upmost to cater to all enquiries. “We can always find a solution. Staircases for example, would be made in a kit format, for ease of delivery and installation, and we use couriers for deliveries who have access to all sizes of vans and lorries,” said Dee.

DOYMA were pleased to hear this as no-one else in the UK had the knowledge about the parts that Tina had, therefore, DOYMA granted Service Sealing Solutions Ltd. exclusivity in the UK.

Bradite’s Tour de France tour de force

The new London headquarters of cycling accessories manufacturer, Rapha, has an eyecatching reception area thanks to specialist coatings from Bradite Paints.

Visitors to the building will walk a path covered in painted slogans, in a nod to the DIY signage that cycling fans use to decorate the routes of their favourite road races, such as the Tour de France. A brightly painted Citroën Type ‘H’ van provides another reference to the home of this iconic race.

London-based designers, Many Hands Studio, worked in collaboration with graphic design and branding agency, BCMH, to produce the new HQ’s interior.

Luke James from Many Hands explains, “The ‘H’ van was to be the centrepiece on the ground floor of the new HQ. It was broken down into panels with each showcasing one of Rapha’s legendary jerseys. We didn’t want to spray the van as we felt

that would be at odds with the artisan approach we wanted to adhere to.”

For the ‘painted road’, the designers recreated the fan slogans applied throughout the thousands of kilometres of the Tour.

“We used Bradite’s ‘Floor-It’ for the lettering,” says Luke. “It had a lovely flow and is extremely

hard-wearing which was ideal for an area with heavy footfall. It also dried quickly which was important as they needed to use the area soon after installation.”

Floor-It has a low-odour acrylic formulation that is non-yellowing, extremely durable with excellent adhesion and stain- and markresistance.

Simplifying the maintenance of your emergency lighting

BLE Lighting & Power Ltd is a specialist in supplying and manufacturing emergency lighting and back-up power equipment. We are committed to delivering high quality products and services, and with over 50 years experience, we have the technical expertise and knowledge on industry and legislative standards to ensure that we are supplying you with a fully compliant product.

At BLE, we are regularly designing new products and solutions to add to our portfolio, and our latest development is the revolutionary BLE Connect system.

BLE Connect is our new fully automated 5G emergency lighting system, that can simplify the process associated with maintaining the emergency lighting across single or multiple facilities.

How does BLE Connect work?

BLE Connect operates using a self healing bluetooth mesh. Each luminaire automatically

detects its neighbour to build the network. If a device is added, removed, or fails, the network will automatically re-organise to find the most efficient route. There are numerous connection possibilities across the network, meaning no single device is relied upon. If one fails, another device will maintain the connection.

What benefits does BLE Connect offer?

BLE Connect offers the ability to monitor the system in real time rather than waiting for the mandatory monthly or annual tests. BLE Connect reports on numerous points of analysis so that any faults are known prior to arriving onsite, meaning maintenance and repair work can be planned ahead. For example, BLE Connect uniquely reports on battery life, so a battery reaching the end of its life can be replaced by a planned engineer visit, prior to any failures.

Benefits of BLE Connect include:

s Easy Installation – With no additional wires to install, this system offers simple installation.

s Highly Secure – Encrypted and authenticated Bluetooth mesh.

s Unlimited Network Devices – There is literally no limit on the number of devices that can be used in a network.

s No Monthly or Subscription Fees – BLE Connect has no ongoing fees or subscriptions making this a cost effective solution.

s Battery Health – BLE Connect reports on battery health, allowing replacements to be made before a failure occurs.

s Light Sensor – BLE Connect not only tests that the mains power to each fitting is present, but it can also sense if the light is present from the LEDs.

s Pro-Active Maintenance – Knowing about faults prior to arriving on site offers a time saving advantage.

How does BLE Connect report?

The user friendly interface allows multiple sites to be managed remotely. Users can also use the interface to instruct a particular fitting or site to perform a test. BLE Connect reports in real time meaning users can view their systems results

by either logging into the portal or via email at times designated by the user.

Systems features:

s Luminaire status

s Battery status

s Battery health

s Testing schedule

s Option to perform a manual test

s Location of the luminaire

s Historic test records

s Link to replace an item

Made in Sheffield with over 50 years of experience, you can be sure of a reliable system that meets your legislative requirements and provides compliant reporting.
