Health, Safety & Security

How to use and maintain a safety shower correctly A safety shower, also known as an emergency shower, is an essential safety equipment in laboratories, industrial settings, and other environments where exposure to hazardous chemicals or materials is a possibility. Assess the Situation – If you come into contact with a hazardous substance or chemical, immediately assess the situation to determine if using the safety shower is necessary. Activate the Shower: ● Locate the safety shower and either pull the handle or push the panic bar to activate the shower, or if fitted step onto the shower platform. ● Quickly remove contaminated clothing and accessories, including shoes. Do this as rapidly as possible, as it can help prevent the chemical or substance from soaking through the clothing. ● Position yourself directly under the flow of water from the safety shower. Ensure that the water is covering your entire body. Activate the Eye Wash (if available) – If the safety shower also has an integrated

eyewash lift the lid to activate the eyewash, and position your eyes in front of the flow of water. Rinse for at Least 15 Minutes – Flush the affected area with water for a minimum of 15 minutes. Seek Medical Assistance – After rinsing, seek medical attention even if you feel fine. Hazardous chemicals may have soaked into your skin, resulting in delayed reactions. Report the Incident – After using the safety shower, report the incident to your supervisor or safety officer. Shower Inspection and Maintenance – Weekly, inspect and operate the safety showers to ensure they are in a working condition and the water is flushed through the unit. Safety showers are designed for emergencies, so it's crucial to know their location and how to use them properly before an incident occurs. For more help or advice, please contact Aqua Safety Showers at: www.aqua-safety.com or telephone +44 (0)1942 318096.

Burg-Wächter’s Secure Communities Scheme supports Dorset charity Burg-Wächter UK’s ‘Secure Communities Scheme’ has come to the aid of a Dorset charity needing help to keep items of equipment, documents and cash safely stored. The company received an application from the Prout Bridge Project for the freeof-charge support that the security specialist’s Secure Communities Scheme provides. Approving greatly of the work the charity does for the local people of Beaminster, Burg-Wächter’s team was motivated to help the organisation through the donation of a suitable safe. The Prout Bridge Project mainly supports the youth population of Beaminster and its surrounding areas with a broad variety of initiatives, including counselling, youth mental health support, youth clubs, holiday activities and a youth band. In addition, the charity also provides a hub for local people of all ages through its Community Centre, which is used

for children’s parties, exercise classes, sports and craft activities, meetings and demonstrations. Having liaised with the charity to assess its security needs, BurgWächter recommended its ‘PointSafe P2 EWS’ safe, because it is ideal for quickly stowing documents of various dimensions, thanks to its two insertion slots of two different sizes. With one slot at the front and the other on the top, it is easy to pop documents into the safe, even when it is permanently installed, without having to open it first. The safe offers the option of a double-bit lock with two keys or an electronic combination lock. For further details of the scheme and rules of entry, head to: www.burg.biz/uk/community/ For information on Burg-Wächter’s range of security products, visit: www. burg.biz/uk or call 01274 395333.

Do you worry about your employees’ use of social media? Social media provides employees with a myriad of ways to bring a company into disrepute: from posing in uniform and bad-mouthing customers on a personal channel to making an illjudged comment on their official page. With 98% of workers saying that they have social media for personal use, it is intrinsic to a business that they have legislation in place. The dangers are not limited to such reputational damage. Bullying, a lack of productivity, privacy and cybersecurity issues, or more niche problems like accidental insider trading within financial services are all potential threats. This means that any employer should now have a social media policy for its

staff. What is a social media policy? A social media policy sets out the rules and parameters of social media usage, both on a company’s official channels and, where it can be linked back to the company, employees’ personal accounts. It will also explain the consequences of breaches. What next? Once policies have been written, it is important that they are communicated to all staff, and that it can be proved that everyone has had access. If you want any help with a social media policy, contact us at: www. hrdept.co.uk – we also have franchise opportunities for HR Professionals.

Lithium batteries are dangerous goods! Fingers have often been pointed at lithium batteries after fires on board aeroplanes, ships, and on vehicles. However, whilst they can exacerbate the situation, the cause is highly unlikely to be lithium batteries that have been manufactured, packaged, labelled, stored, handled, and transported in compliance with the regulations. There is no doubt, though, that a fire could potentially be made worse, and less manageable, by the presence of lithium batteries. This is because of the high levels of energy that they contain and the difficulty in extinguishing a fire involving lithium – a particularly challenging task in the confines of a vehicle, a ship, or on board an aircraft. There is also the risk of ‘thermal runaway’ where the temperature

6

increases uncontrollably to a point where the cells in the battery catch fire, typically with dramatic effects. Lithium Batteries are classified under the multimodal regulations as dangerous goods. Consequently, if you ship lithium batteries or cells, even the small button types, you will need to have received training. Labeline International has an online course to meet the minimum requirement for ‘Adequate Instruction’, and a classroom course to cover batteries that are fully regulated.

Unlock global trade with EORI The UK’s exit from the EU customs territory created the need for support with new customs paperwork where previously there had been none. Initial estimates put this at around two hundred million declarations per annum although that figure has settled to less than one hundred million, but still a substantial number.

both keep the entire process flowing smoothly.

From the outset, EORI took the view that Brexit could not simply mean ‘more of the same’.

By leveraging customs simplifications, EORI detaches the customs process from goods movement, allowing declarations to be completed after delivery. This forward-thinking system accommodates repetitive flows, enabling a single import declaration to cover ten days of movements, marking EORI as an instrumental player in unlocking seamless global trade.

Hardy outlined the time-saving benefits, stating, “It takes minutes to release an import consignment, often at a lower cost. Our specialists handle customs formalities ensuring the focus is on growing clients’ business.”

Founder and CEO Rob Hardy emphasised the need for a tailored approach, acknowledging that EU trade demands efficiency. EORI’s CABIE solution, significantly reduces border stress and paperwork. Working in the background their solution manages all approvals alongside a 24 hour customs support team,

MultiFreight celebrates 50 years in business grow their business.

In 1980 our first freight forwarding system called ‘FORWARD’ was released, followed shortly afterwards by our airfreight system ‘SKYWARD’.

MultiFreight are celebrating a special and historical milestone this month, as the business has now been in existence for an incredible 50 years – yes that’s half a century! MultiFreight Managing Director, Ian Taylor, commented, “This is an incredible milestone for the business and one that we are extremely proud of. While technology continues to progress, the primary role of computing and software is still the same, it is designed to improve our daily lives. As we continue to develop new technologies, and with AI just around the corner, it is difficult to imagine what the next 50 years will be like.” The company was founded way back in 1973 – initially being called Security Computing Services Ltd, operating within the Norcros Group of companies as an independent computer service bureau and providing a wide range of computing services to clients.

Established in 2009 and part of a worldwide group with 115 years of family-owned history, Ziegler UK has since grown to 15 branches nationwide, continuing an exciting era of growth and investment in the British market by developing a very international multimodal logistics service.

In 1994 a management buyout took place, renaming the company to SCS Ltd and we began solely focusing on developing software solutions to the freight forwarding and shipping industry. Our multimodal freight software system ‘MULTIFREIGHT’ was launched in 1995, followed in 1996 by our UK Customs solution MultiShed. Some twenty years later and wishing to maintain independent, a second management buyout took place when we renamed and rebranded to MultiFreight Limited. Another ten years on and we continue to maintain much of the original company ideology to ensure we are committed to continually developing software solutions and providing services that help our customers streamline and

Schaltbau’s contactors Schaltbau have created a range of contactors to support the rapid developments in vehicle electrification and Hybrid/Electric Battery Vehicles. This includes compact contactors designed to operate up to 1,000VDC while minimising the internal resistance and enabling the passing of currents up to 500A. Key to these eV focused contactors is the development of robust and reliable solutions capable of operating in environments where short circuits and overcurrents can occur. Schaltbau have avoided the use of enclosed, gas filled, encapsulated enclosures by developing air cored devices allowing superior thermal management and removing the potential for catastrophic failure of the device. Beyond the current 400-800 VDC requirement of passenger vehicles, Schaltbau have also developed higher voltage and current solutions for larger vehicle electrification applications from excavators to mining trucks and busses to trains with the CP contactor range taking the capabilities up to 3,000VDC and 2,000A. Alongside contactors for use within eVs, is the need for contactors within the charging infrastructure. Here

Schaltbau have developed robust and reliable industrial contactors including the 1,000V/500A C310 range and the 1,500V/1,000A C320. Think sodium-ion batteries: Think MEP Technologies Here at Business & Industry Today, we celebrate innovation and the battery sector right now is brimming with dynamic innovation. MEP Technologies is our end of year recommendation for cutting-edge design and manufacturing of battery systems. Sodium batteries are fast becoming the ‘dark horse’, in the race to find robust alternatives to lithium batteries. Lithium natural reserves are not inexhaustible and with the current demand driving prices through the roof, many in the industry are speculating that the days of lithium (nicknamed ‘white gold’) might be numbered. Sodium batteries offer a low-cost alternative, are readily available and

considerably safer. Sodium is the sixth most abundant natural element sourced in the earth's crust, which is prized highly for many battery manufacturers. With ongoing fire safety concerns around lithium batteries, sodium cells are resistant to explosion, thermal runaway events (fires) or short circuits. What’s more they can weather extreme low and high temperatures, with the capacity to operate between –20°C to 60°C. This is in comparison to lithium cells which have a markedly more limited temperature range from 0°C to 50°C. Most importantly, the raw materials for sodium can be extracted at much lower costs, with lower energy usage than lithium, making this the more considered sustainable choice. Dundee powerhouse MEP Technologies is already ahead of the curve and has designed the 2kWh sodium-ion battery module. The sodium battery has triangular benefits: cost-effective, safer and more sustainable. This is a game-changer in battery energy storage systems (BESS), storing excess energy from renewable sources such as wind and solar for later use. The UK Government has predicted that BESS could essentially save the UK energy system up to £40 billion by 2050. Furthermore, strategic research provider: BNEF has estimated that sodium-ion batteries have the capacity to reach pack densities of almost 150

watt-hours per kilogram by 2025. If you’re looking for cutting-edge sodium-ion battery modules, MEP Technologies are happy to offer consultation and products for your BESS today.

MEP Technologies have been at the heart of battery system design and manufacturing for decades and can offer bespoke battery systems to many applications including: e-mobility, automotive, commercial and small-packs. With an onus on driving the carbon neutral economy, the Scottish company have already worked on a landmark collaborative project on e-battery technology for HGVs. Funded by Innovate UK, part of the £20 Million zero emission road freight trial from the Department for Transport, MEP Technologies is helping work towards a safer, carbon neutral road freight system. For more information on the exciting potential of sodium-ion battery modules, contact MEP Technologies today. T +44 (0)7468 859486 enquiries@meptec.co.uk https://meptec.co.uk/

Looking for a manufacturer of battery systems?

Low cost and local supply. The best of both. With soaring inflation and wildly fluctuating exchange rates, product pricing from offshore supply can be unpredictable. Not to mention the difficulty of importing and exporting battery systems. And what about the difficulties of a supported warranty? Why not remove all these headaches by sourcing from a local experienced manufacturer?

MEP Technologies has been involved in the manufacture of battery systems for decades. We can manufacture existing battery pack designs, providing supportable warranty and competitive pricing. We can also work with you to specify battery solutions for new products. We work with the latest technologies to design and supply cutting edge battery solutions that give your product an advantage over the competition: more energy, lighter weight, smaller packaging.

n energy and environmentally conscious Scottish couple opted to install the Panasonic Aquarea L Series Air to Water heat pump in their Scottish bungalow.

anasonic Heating & Cooling Solutions is launching its new Advanced Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) ZY Series. The new series consists of an extended 9 model line-up including a 2,000m3/h model, all integrated with DC motors with independent control setting for air supply and exhaust. An ERV is essential to buildings to provide fresh filtered air inside. Through its ventilation system it ensures the air is not contaminated nor contains any odours potentially penetrating the new supply of air. The units possess an external static pressure (ESP) advancing up to 150 Pa with an F7 grade filter built-in as standard. In addition to this, the new ZY series has an impressive recovery power of up to 83% of heat exchange efficiency. This high recovery rate further optimises cost and can be considered a sustainable solution. Incorporated into the new models is two backdraft shutters, unique to Panasonic. Its key role is to prevent

IV

air flowing in the wrong direction when the ERV is turned off and not operating. Additionally, the ERV has three connection options available: group control with a maximum of two ERV systems, direct connection to field supply switch, and ERV operation in conjunction with heating and cooling systems. The ZY series also introduces a new remote controller. Information is clearly visible through a black light and white background whilst also containing a backbox as standard. The controller is available to be integrated with BMS through the RS485 terminal. www.aircon.panasonic.eu

The new installation was completed with the Panasonic Smart Cloud control system which allows the couple to have total control of their heating and cooling. The heating system was installed by RDI Renewables, a Panasonic accredited Pro Partner in the Highlands. The new Panasonic solution provides high water temperature as well as being connected to the existing indoor radiators throughout the bungalow. The new Aquarea heat pump is integrated with solar PV roof panels to further enhance the energy efficiency of the home and minimising the environmental impact. Homeowner, Mr Vallance, added, “We are very happy so far with our new Panasonic

system and have already noticed a difference in the temperature of the hot water plus the water pressure is much higher, resulting in a more powerful shower. The new outdoor unit is quiet despite its powerful operation. We are looking forward to feeling the benefit of the new system this coming winter.” The new Aquarea L Series can provide an increased output water temperature of 75ºC and therefore is an ideal retrofit solution to connect to existing radiators. The couple have also saved on indoor space as the new All-inOne unit is now housed in the garage and incorporates the hot water tank, freeing up the indoor hallway storage space. The Smart Cloud system was easy to set up and allows the homeowners to monitor their energy usage. To find out more, please visit: www.aircon.panasonic.eu

New TANA 440ET electric shredder combines clean operations and mobility T

he newest addition to the popular and proven TANA Shark shredder series, the TANA 440ET, uses electricity as its power source. Combining the benefits of cheap energy, long service intervals and near-emissionsfree operations, the new model helps TANA customers succeed in public procurements and competition within the circular economy. Soon, it will be possible to process various waste fractions into raw materials for the circular economy in an even more environmentally friendly way. Tana’s newest mobile shredder, the TANA Shark 440ET, shreds waste completely electrically. “Electrification makes it possible to reduce local emissions from waste processing to a minimum. This supports the goals of our customers working at the

heart of the circular economy and makes the pre-processing of recycled raw materials and recycled materials even cleaner,” says Eetu Tuovinen, Product Manager for TANA shredders.

In recent years, the importance of the circular economy and locally produced recycled materials has also grown in terms of security of supply. A power unit based on diversified and decentralised electricity production supports not only environmental goals, but also the security of supply and predictability of operating costs for customers. Furthermore, the more the electricity production capacity increases, the more affordable the power source is.

The TANA Shark 440ET is based on proven technology that has been tested extensively in real conditions. The design of the new shredder is based on the TANA Shark series that was launched at the beginning of the 2000s and whose properties of durability, versatility and mobility have achieved almost iconic status among customers. The development of the new shredder model was driven by feedback from customers. “Our customers have shown strong interest and a need for an electrically powered and mobile shredder. The TANA Shark 440ET is the first shredder model on the market that combines mobility and electric drive,” Tuovinen explains. The TANA Shark 440ET completes the philosophy of the model series, according to which every customer can find a suitability powered and reliable shredder with the optimal performance for their particular operations. The TANA Shark 440ET is ideally suited for high-volume

VIII

production facilities, where industrial-grade 1,000-amp and 400/480-volt three-phase electrical connections are available.

Although the shredding itself is powered from the electricity mains, diesel technology has not been completely abandoned. The new electric shredder is equipped with a small diesel engine that allows the machine to be driven independently from one processing point to another at the production plant or terminal. BGF-backed Environmental Essentials launches compliance tool in period of record growth seen turnover grow by 23% in the last 12 months, with almost 90% growth of EBITDA. Since 2015, Environmental Essentials has received a total of £5.7 million from BGF – one of the largest and most experienced growth capital investors in the UK and Ireland. The growth capital has enabled the company to execute an ambitious buy and build strategy, while investing in the development of proprietary software.

E

nvironmental Essentials – one of the UK’s leading asbestos service providers – has launched a unique online risk management tool, following a period of strong growth for the BGF-backed company. OMNI is a web-enabled asbestos database that provides real-time risk and compliance information to help manage property portfolios and associated projects. The software enables companies to store and manage asbestos, Legionella and other compliance-based risks and data in one portal. The recently launched asbestos module also allows users to view surveys, as well as analytical and removal data by project, site, date, or type of work. The interactive plan function makes the system easy to use and instantly locate risks in any location within a building.

Richard Powner, co-founder and executive director at Environmental Essentials, commented, “The three major areas of compliance are asbestos, water and fire. Being able to understand the risks that these pose when undergoing a construction project or PPM activities is vital to our customers – not only in terms of reducing exposure, but also reducing any associated costs that these risks bring. “By having live and up-to-date information about all

areas of a building, customers have the confidence they need to manage projects and any potential risks both proactively and efficiently.” At the end of 2022, Environmental Essentials received £2.4 million of follow-on funding from BGF to help accelerate its growth plans. The funding supported the acquisition of Adams Environmental, which specialises in the listed building and education sectors, servicing high-profile buildings such as the National History Museum and Imperial College London. BGF investor, Jon Earl, commented, “Environmental Essentials is an exciting and highly ambitious business that is always looking at ways to push boundaries – whether that’s through product innovation or integrating new services into the business through buy & build. “After their best year on record, they are perfectly positioned to capitalise on the significant potential that exists within the built environment, while continuing to offer customers marketing-leading solutions that tackle the complex areas of asbestos, water and air hygiene management.” Contact www.environmentalessentials.co.uk www.bgf.co.uk

The BIOMES (Biomechanisms for Soil Life and Plant Nutrition) joint research and innovation chair between GAIAGO and UniLaSalle has published the first scientific article showing the effects of two soil biostimulants, Nutrigeo L® & K1®. Analyses were carried out at two harvest dates: three weeks and ten weeks after product application and residue incorporation. Root growth and development of above-ground crop was monitored in this study. Nutrigeo L® confirmed its positive effect on maize growth increasing the abundance of ‘beneficial’ soil microorganisms, including saprophytic and mycorrhizal fungi. There was an observed increase in CEC, glomalin content and the quantity of carbon associated with fine soil particles at ten weeks confirming the action of the NUTRIGEO L® prebiotic in initiating dynamics favorable to soil carbon storage.

K1® also increased the abundance of fungi and bacteria considered beneficialas well as producing greater growth in the crops tested. Trials that were also carried out by independent technical centers in the field and the ‘La Terre Par Dessus Tout’ operation completed by Gaïago in 2020, proved that NUTRIGEO L® is the main lever of the Gaïago Carbon program which enables farmers to accelerate the revitalisation of their soils thanks to the income generated by carbon credits. More than 26,000 hectares of 650 farmers in Europe are involved in this program. www.gaiago.eu

erbo Charge presented its gamechanging through-pavement charging channel at THE CENEX low Carbon Vehicle Connected Automated Mobility Show on 6 September for the first time! The Kerbo Charge channel, which is live in five cities in the UK, including Milton Keynes, Durham and Reading, makes it possible for residents without driveways to safely charge their electric car from their domestic supply.

Highways, Durham County Council

Residents insert their charging cable into the channel and the self-closing lid closes behind like a zip. This removes the risk of trips and falls from trailing charging cables across the footway. The channel, manufactured in the UK, also contours with the pavement during installation so it sits perfectly flush with the pavement surface.

And residents are also pleased they can now safely charge their car at home for the first time. “I’ve not felt particularly comfortable trailing a cable over the pavement to charge my car, and public charge points are very expensive. Now I can safely charge at home, which I’m really happy about,” said John Obidipe, Milton Keynes resident

Feedback from local authorities has been very positive. For example Durham County Council are currently trialling 20 units. “We are delighted to have been selected to pilot this pioneering technology which will make owning an electric vehicle accessible to more of our residents,” said Cllr John Shuttleworth, Cabinet member for

The channel is slim and shallow making installation quick with minimal impact on the existing footway. It is made of PVC which has a significantly lower carbon footprint than aluminium, has a life expectancy of over 100 years and will not be targeted by metal thieves.

Renewal energy insurance D avid Epstein ACII at Sturdy Edwards looks at the differing insurances available to companies involved in the renewal energy sector. The standard policies will include Employers Liability, Public and Products Liability. Additional protection for some companies, depending upon what

they do and their contractual obligations, may include Professional Indemnity, Collateral Warranties, Financial Loss, Efficacy, and Product Guarantee. For example, professional indemnity insurance covers the Insured’s legal liability for losses incurred by a third party, arising out alleged negligent advice, design or specification.

XVI

This type of insurance would be particularly relevant where a company is providing such advice or design separately for a fee. For example, a company has designed the electrical installation, but as a result of faulty design the building catches fire and is destroyed.

Financial loss insurance would protect a firm where a third party suffers a financial loss (as distinct from a physical loss) arising out of manual work performed. A Public Liability policy would not respond in such an event, (Lack of physical damage), nor would a Professional Indemnity Policy (loss is not as a result of negligent advice, design). The general advice is to speak to your insurance broker about your business in detail, in order that the correct advice is provided. Contact T 01342 313733 glenn@sturdyedwards.com

New MENZEL headquarters: Larger plant for larger motors At the new motor plant of Menzel Elektromotoren, which is currently being built in Hennigsdorf, near Berlin, Germany, the interior construction has now been completed on schedule. Moving to the new site with a total area of 24,000m2, the electric motor manufacturer will increase its floor space and capacities, optimise the factory layout for an efficient production flow and is planning to create additional jobs. The crane capacities will be increased to 80 tons and the entire shop floor will be accessible via two crane levels, which will bring significant logistical advantages. In recent years, MENZEL has seen a growing demand for larger, more complex drive systems with a variety of auxiliary equipment such as transformers, converters, controllers and starters. The new test facilities are tailored to this need. For example, the area for load testing of large machines and generators has been significantly enhanced to cater for the largest frame sizes and loadings. A two floor construction inside the load test field will house the control room, offices for the test field technicians and a separate lounge from which customers can observe ongoing tests. The soundproofing measures have been completed, and heavy-duty racks for shelf loads of 6,000kg have been procured, which will accommodate part of the large MENZEL motor inventory and thus further shorten delivery times.

In the next few months, the gradual relocation from the existing headquarters in Berlin will commence. The production and shipping of industrial motors in the high output range will continue without interruption. The commissioning of the new company headquarters is scheduled for early 2024. MENZEL designs and manufactures its own efficient series of slip ring motors and squirrel-cage motors and also specialises in custom-made products, even with unusual specifications. Funnel Integrated Technology hits the stage

Over the last 30 years, there has been a boom in the traceability and identification of manufactured components. Many industries want to directly laser mark these, however there are some parts that are just getting larger and larger. Casting and pressing companies sometimes have such large parts that they simply cannot fit these into a standard sized Class 1 laser enclosure leaving many companies wondering how they can mark them. Even though they launched a new range of large XXL-Box class 1 enclosures in 2022, SIC Marking saw this problem as a new challenge for 2023. They have now launched their Funnel Integrated Technology (FIT for short) as a complete all in one solution that combines all of the necessary components and settings to mark larger parts in a simple, safe and economic way within the customers production line and budget. The FIT tunnel eliminates the need to enclose the entire part for the laser marking process by enclosing just the marking area. The compact design allows for the FIT system to be retrofitted easily into an existing robotic cell. This ready to integrate and secured laser marking system comes as a ‘Tunnel Style’ Class 1 compliant enclosure. It is a compact and easy to integrate solution with a single connection to a PLC. The FIT can be mounted to a robot head for presenting to a stationary part – or fixed in position allowing the robot to present the part for marking. Not only is the FIT adapted for production environments with its maintenance drawer for the cleaning of the lens, it has built-in shock protection preventing the funnel from damage. The FIT tunnel can be adapted to your marking needs with three window sizes available as standard: 24mm x 32mm, 100mm x 32mm and 100mm x 100mm. On average, the mobile test lab can reduce plastic usage by up to 69% and save more 320 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, which is equivalent to removing 65 combustion vehicles off the road for one year. Lindum has tested movement in transport (MIT) for a wide range of products including canned beer, sacks of flour, soft drinks, tins of paint, boxes of dog food, cat litter, rolls of paper and sacks of grain. Results include 80% reduction in MITs at a global brewery, testing and implementing an anti-slip layer sheet that eliminated MITs at a pet food manufacturing site and resolving transit damage for a beverage manufacturer. The mobile test lab is driven to customers’ premises to conduct pallet stability tests without impacting the

production line. The self-contained unit uses an on-board accelerator bench that simulates the stresses a loaded pallet is subject to when a vehicle brakes suddenly. A camera measures and records the deflection and movements in the pallet at a range of pre-set G forces and the data is analysed by specially written software to determine pallet stability performance in accordance with the EUMOS standard. Immediate feedback is provided to adjust the wrapping and a pallet can quickly be retested. Contact T +44 (0)1469 574480 info@lindumpackaging.com www.lindumpackaging.com

Infosecurity Europe Review – Top Exhibitors

Infosecurity Europe 2023 in review Angoka’s offering focuses on smart cities and mobility. During Infosecurity Europe the company highlighted the cyber-threats associated with drones and found that, based on three years of research on drone control systems, there are 156 different threats associated with commercial unpiloted vehicles. Becky Pinkard, Managing Director of Global Cyber Operations at Barclays, was inducted into the Infosecurity Europe Hall of Fame 2023. Becky highlighted her dedication to cybersecurity during her Hall of Fame lecture at the event.

After the Infosecurity Europe 2023 event in London, it’s time to reflect on some of the highlights of this year’s event, held at London’s ExCeL from 20-22 June 2023. This year’s keynote conference started with a spectacular opening keynote from legendary Olympian and star of track and field, Michael Johnson. “The fundamentals, you can’t avoid them,” Johnson said, while reflecting on his time avoiding parts of the training fundamental to becoming a four-time Olympic gold medalist. Translating this to the cybersecurity world doesn’t take too much imagination, we’re reminded that having

the security basics right is always the first step to maturing your cybersecurity posture. Johnson also highlighted how it pays to prepare for the unknown, study your opponent and take control of the situation wherever possible, but also to be flexible enough to respond with agility to changing conditions if required. Infosecurity Europe continues to recognise people and organisations that make a difference in the world of cybersecurity. This year, the UK Department of Science, Information and Technology (DSIT) selected Angoka as the 2023 Most Innovative Cyber SME.

Pinkard’s experience in this industry throughout her 27 year career had helped her grow both personally and professionally and she said, “What I realised is that security gave me a home.” During her heartfelt talk she implored the audience to be open to others who might not fit in. “Remember who they are at home is who they are as a person. That is who they bring to work and that is why they are successful. We have to embrace that and won’t be successful if we don’t,” she said. Infosecurity Europe returns next year to London’s ExCeL from 4-6 June 2024. This is our pick of the best exhibitors from this year’s event, listed here in alphabetical order: authenton & Nanitor. Further details can be found on this page. www.infosecurityeurope.com

Direct to Film (DTF) and UV DTF printing has recently seen huge interest for producing promotional items such as printed T-Shirts and merchandise. In response, InkTec have developed the ideal products to get businesses quickly up and running with this new form of technology. DTF Solutions InkTec’s compact, versatile DTF printers produce graphics to transfer onto fabric. Using high-density inks to deliver a quality, soft touch finish, the resulting graphic stays flexible and does not fade or crack over time (which can happen with other methods). Bright and vibrant colours are achieved which stand the test of time. Within the easy-to-use range is also a powder shaker, film, inks and powder. UV DTF Solutions This printing approach enables designs to easily transfer directly onto hard, smooth objects, or even

irregular shapes. A combination of UV-curable ink and a special film creates ‘stickers’ that can be added to plastics, metal, board and more. With no need for detailed cutting around intricate designs, users simply take the graphic, peel off the backing film, press firmly, then peel off the front film. The portfolio includes printer, inks and film. Both have compact options available in either a 60cm or 30cm print width. An accessible, easy to use range, easily integrated into existing operations & ideal for adding designs to a myriad of promotional items. T +44 (0)1993 862770 dtf@inkteceu.com www.inktec-europe.com

NAPFM The Emergency Fleet Exhibition Review – Top Exhibitors

The NAPFM Event Police Service through the National Framework Agreements.

The NAPFM Event, held at Telford’s International Centre from 4-5 July 2023, is organised by West Mercia Police on behalf of the UK Police Service. The rationale behind the original seminar for fleet engineers was to provide a cost effective opportunity to share information, good practice and seek ways of saving money; after four decades that principle has not changed. In fact the need to save money through collaboration has never been more important than it is today. The event has led to many developments that have resulted in closer collaboration between forces and organisations, as well as huge annual savings for the

18

The event remains an invite-only event for exhibitors, delegates and visitors to the exhibition. The event is widely recognised by the motor industry as one of the best police & emergency service transport shows in Europe. The event is used by manufacturers and suppliers to network not only with delegates and visitors but with other exhibitors to share ideas and opportunities. Many manufacturers ensure that their engineers attend the event to assess the needs of the British Emergency Service market. The NAPFM Event returns next year to Telford’s International Centre from 2-3 July 2024. This is our pick of the best exhibitors from this year’s event, listed here in alphabetical order: VUE. Further details can be found on this page. www.napfmevent.org.uk

VUE’s road safety technology keeps emergency service crews safe Due to the pressured nature of their jobs, blue light crews need vehicle technology that is reliable and robust so they remain safe while on duty. This is why VUE has provided trusted solutions to emergency service fleets across the UK for over a decade. Their vehicle CCTV and telematics offers context into incidents, detects vulnerable road users in blind spots using AI technology, and protects staff from false complaints. Also, fuel data from CANbus assists in decisions on vehicle type improvement and its driver safety data, such as seatbelt usage, provides deeper accident insights. On the online fleet management platform, VUEhub, operators can track a vehicle’s live location and replay past journeys. As the innovative solution distinguishes between emergency and non-emergency

trips, fleet managers are able to monitor driver behaviour more effectively when the sirens are off by looking at key performance indicators such as speeding, cornering and harsh braking. This also helps defend them in accident claims and brings clarity to the incident if their behaviour was a result of an emergency response. International Cyber Expo Review – Top Exhibitors

International Cyber Expo 2023 triumphs

Trust nothing. Encrypt everything.

The triumphant return of Nineteen Group’s International Cyber Expo firmly solidifies its position as a must-attend fixture in the cybersecurity industry’s annual calendar. With resounding support from esteemed government organisations, distinguished experts, and leading industry vendors, this event stands as an indispensable show for professionals and enthusiasts alike.

It’s obvious some industries are at higher risk of cyberattack than others.

6,475 visitors, from over 80 countries, descended on Olympia London from 26-27 September 2023 for the acclaimed annual cybersecurity event, seeing an impressive 35% growth in its second year. With 159 exhibitors demonstrating their cutting-edge solutions and over 60 talks, demos, presentations and CISO roundtable discussions, this year’s expo once again emerged as an unparalleled gathering of industry leaders, experts, and enthusiasts. “This year’s International Cyber Expo lived up to all expectations and fostered

a great sense of community in the cyber security industry. It is events like this that allow industry professionals to meet and share best practice and talk about key themes that come up. Generative AI and working together more closely as an industry were key themes, as well as finding a role in cyber security and the cyber skills gap. It is clear more needs to be done in terms of securing generative AI and discussions around this important topic were heard on the Global Cyber Summit Stage; I can foresee this being a hot topic in cyber security moving forward,” said Lisa Ventura MBE, Founder of Cyber Security Unity and Advisory Council Member, International Cyber Expo. International Cyber Expo returns next year to London’s Olympia from 24-25 September 2024. This is our pick of the best exhibitors from this year’s event, listed here in alphabetical order: Senetas Corporation. Further details can be found on this page. www.internationalcyberexpo.com

Whether for financial gain or simply to do harm, cyber-criminals are ahead of the game when it comes to exploiting IT systems’ and data networks’ vulnerabilities. Symantec’s research highlights cybercriminals’ priority industry targets as IT, critical infrastructure, manufacturing, and science/biomedical industries. However, cyber-criminals’ sophistication and resourcing demand all businesses equip their cyber-defences with state-ofthe-art anti-malware/ransomware and encryption security. Too often, business cyber-defences are successfully circumvented, leading to significant breaches of unencrypted sensitive, valuable and personally identifiable data. Millions of records are routinely compromised, with damage extending through the digital supply chain. Ultimately, data breach nightmares often involve outdated legacy IT and cybersecurity systems as well as failures to encrypt sensitive/valuable data.

Only encryption provides that last line of defence in the event of a successful cyber-attack. The Microsoft, Dropbox, and MOVEit disasters highlight the scale of the problem. In the case of MOVEit, estimates say 2,000 companies and 60 million data records were compromised. Cyber-defences must be built on zero trust principles – ‘trust nothing, encrypt everything’. Hence, state-of-the-art cybersecurity solutions offer more than the ability to shut the stable door quickly after the horse has bolted. T +44 (0)1256 345599 infoemea@senetas.com www.senetas.com

EV Charging Company of the Month

Charging for an ecological future In this issue of Building & Industry Today, we are honoured to select Eco EV+ as our EV Charging Company of the Month wallbox chargers, EV charging cables, to charger port covers to cover all your varying EV charging needs. The London-based company is happy to hear from you if you’re considering making the switch and can offer advice on which products are most suitable, for business or personal use. This includes referring you to the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme, through the Office for Zero Emission (OZEV) for household grants or the UK Government’s Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS)- a voucher scheme aimed at workplaces wishing to make the switch.

The UK has seen a jump in battery-electric cars from 97,565 in 2019 to 926,187 in 2023, according to Zapmap, the leading UK eMobility service provider. At the end of October 2023, there were an estimated 1,489,000 plug-in cars, including the aforementioned battery-electric vehicles and 560,000 PHEVs registered. There has been a sizeable shift from plug-in hybrids to battery-electric vehicles and this upward trend is expected to increase. Despite rising energy prices, many companies are taking the leap & switching to greener electric cars, vans and whole fleets and installing charging stations at workplaces. The UK Government has announced longterm plans to expand the electricity grid across the country and talks of new ‘electricity superhighways’ are already underway. Despite the UK petrol and diesel ban being pushed from 2030 to 2035, many UK households and businesses are already looking at EV investments over the coming months. Eco EV+ is a relative newcomer to the EV charging industry but with premium BESEN products on board, the company is already taking the market by storm. We featured Eco EV+ previously as a stand-out exhibitor at this year’s Smart Retail Tech Expo back in March this year, through its commitment to helping the transport industry become more sustainable, through a premium range of chargers and accessories.

Established during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, by founder, Ameya Ravindra Karmalkar, this London-based business is on the cusp of expanding further. We caught up with Ameya for a deeper insight into the company’s strategic business plan, “We sell EV chargers via dropshipping for a more sustainable future. We are involved in the sales and distribution side of things at the moment but plan to install, design and manufacture by next year. “Eco EV+ offers high quality, eco-friendly products at low cost, with record charging times and LCD displays. The advantages of our products are they certified to work even in extreme weather conditions, such as: snow, hale or gale force winds. Due to fluctuating UK weather patterns throughout the year, such as heavy rainfall and with now with typical El Niño-style winters bringing snowfall, it is essential to have a robust, weather-proofed UK EV charging systems. “Our target customer base is the commercial and transport sector: petrol stations, car park ownersespecially those with a fleet of electric vehicles,

through to first-time owners of electric vehicles. “We envisage a future of EV stations, dotted everywhere, to help embrace the future of EV for a greener, more sustainable era. “Looking to the future, we plan to expand into the solar market and eventually manufacture our own range of goods. We are looking to manufacture these in China & South East Asia.” Currently, Eco EV+ supplies leading, top Chinese BESEN brands, with a manufacturing history dating back 13 years. BESEN is largely regarded as a pioneer in the EV charger market and has spearheaded the manufacturing of premiere products. With a dynamic, dedicated R&D team, the Chinese Powerhouse has prioritised safe, fast-charging, robust solutions, allowing businesses and households over the world to embrace the sustainable shift to greener transportation. One of the best-selling products from Eco EV+ is the BESEN 22kw RFID EV Wallbox charger, with Type 2 charging plug. The charger can work in temperatures from -25°C to 55°C and comes with a 12 month warranty. The handy screen display shows voltage monitoring and charging times, allows users to plan around charging times. For more information on the product range or for more advice, see the website below: www.ecoevplus.co.uk

The need to reduce carbon footprint and promote sustainable transportation is more important than ever right now, especially in the race to reach the UK Government’s 2050 net-zero targets. The switch to electric vehicles is one of the wisest, eco-friendly choices that businesses can make in the current climate. Eco EV+ supply a range of products from home
