Dairy Milking Machine Manufacturing & Technology Company of the Month

Innovation in and out of parlour

In this issue of Business & Industry Today, we are honoured to select ATL Agricultural Technology as our Dairy Milking Machine Manufacturing & Technology Company of the Month ATL Agricultural Technology has been showcasing its new Pegasus Auto Drafter sorting system at established shows like UK Dairy Day in Telford and the South West Show at Shepton Mallet over the last few months. The Newmarketbased team were on hand to show new and existing customers the benefits of the sorting system, alongside the ear tag IDs and herringbone parlour solutions. The Pegasus Auto Drafter comes in two versions: ‘intro’ and ‘pro’ and sorts cows in a stress-free strategic manner using sorting flags automatically from the following four starting points: Micro M5, milking point, ATL App or Cowculator PC Software. The streamlined system uses low-cost HDX ear tags and with more than one drafting gate, cows can be easily sorted and manoeuvred into more than three directions. With a robust galvanised steel construction, the sensors automatically close the drafting gates and the locked drafting gates prevent cows moving back unexpectedly. The Texas gate option provides added reassurance for ultimate safety with herd milking. Furthermore, the antenna shield mitigates against cow tags being mistakenly re-read once the cows have been drafted. “Our Pegasus Auto Drafter is really gaining traction across the industry, especially now with New Zealand Jersey cows on dairy farms across the UK and Ireland. This breed is known for being more sassy, curious and quick-thinking, compared to the slightly more docile Holstein Friesian breed. Farmers are looking for smart sorting systems, whatever the cow breed,” explained Director, Peter Sadler.

more efficient system, yield is higher and infections are monitored. Conductivity measurements can quickly identify painful mastitis, supporting the health and wellbeing of the herd. Detailed, user-friendly data can be accessed throughout the day, streaming to handy phone apps and giving farmers a comprehensive picture of each collective herd.

ATL Agricultural Technology is now the only British-based milk machine manufacturer and prides itself on over forty years of expertise in the industry. The company was established by Peter’s father, Robin Sadler, and his business partner, David Coxshall, back in 1981 as a supplier of parlour feeders and electronics. With Robin’s design engineer background and meticulous attention to detail, the company diversified over the years and sold its first cow parlour in 2012. “Sadly, our father passed away last year and together with my brother, Richard, we have carried on the familybusiness. We specialise in herringbone, rapid exit and rotary milking parlour solutions, with an extensive range of automated packages. These include our CR Range Cluster Removers, Auto Wash, Variable Speed Pumps, Milk Meters and Auto ID,” added Peter. With the sharp increase in animal feed, fuel and fertiliser impacting dairy farmers across the UK and Ireland, coupled with labour shortages and unseasonable droughts, has made the last twelve months difficult for the industry. Dairy is an energyintensive, laborious sector and can require hours of manpower throughout the year. ATL Agricultural Technology understands the perils facing the industry and through its automated solutions seeks to support the farmers.

“Our CR range of cluster removers for example, can be retrofitted to abreast, herringbone and rotary parlours, allowing each operator the opportunity to substantially reduce milking times, while simultaneously improve teat health through the seamless automation of the removal of the milking cluster from the cows, sheep or goats. “Over the last fifteen years, we have grown our sheep and goat milking machine manufacturing and technology, so it now accounts for 30% of our business. We export to Ireland, Portugal, Spain and parts of Latin America. It is a strategic risk management plan that allows us to continuously support all aspects of our business. “Looking to the future, we are developing out three main parlour systems, in accordance with demand from the dairy industry. We look forward to seeing new and existing customers at the LAMMA 2024 show to showcase our Pegasus Auto Drafter sorting system,” concluded Peter. LAMMA 2024: 17-18 Jan 2024: NEC, Birmingham T +44 (0)1638 731212 sales@atlagri.com www.atlagri.com

Once a laborious, tedious job, investing in these cuttingedge automated systems have saved dairy farmers time, freeing them up to do more jobs around the farm and importantly, giving the cows more time to relax in the fields. Some farmers have even reported herds enjoying the parlour systems now and with a quicker,

Triple Gate Valve triumph for Oliver Valvetek Oliver Valvetek identifies new and emerging opportunities to supply higher pressure smallbore subsea valves, and recognises the technical barriers that hinder most other valve suppliers. The subsea oil and gas industry has been rapidly developing new technology to allow the development of ‘challenging fields’. These challenges are usually associated with high pressure, high temperature (HP/HT), and operation at great depths.

½” Triple Gate Valve, both manufactured using Nickel Alloy 718 material. Project technical specification requirement: ● High Pressure 20,000psi ● High Temperature +150°C/+302°F ● Operating Depth 3,048m/10,000ft Small bore gate valves are often used for chemical injection, venting flowlines and bypass

Fields with pressures of 15,000psi (1,034bar) were generally considered high pressure, however, new fields are now being discovered and developed for well bore production with working pressures of 20,000 psi (1,380 bar). Oliver Valvetek had already successfully designed and qualified a 3/8” Nominal Bore 20,000 CWP needle valve for a High Pressure/High Temperature field development in the Gulf of Mexico.

Steve Williams explains the extent of the testing process, “Close client collaboration and extensive technical evaluations were instrumental to the success, as too, were the independent design and process validation by Third-Party & client Regulatory bodies evaluating all aspects of the design for Safety, Quality and long-term reliability.

The journey started early in 2021, Oliver Valvetek scoped out opportunities to supply other small-bore High Pressure/ High Temperature valves to these new and technically challenging fields. Working closely with Trendsetter Engineering based in Houston on their modular Trident 20K Intervention System, Trendsetter and Oliver Valvetek engineers began work on designing valves that would meet these new high pressure, high temperature requirements.

“Enhanced QC & QA procedures at each stage of production of both valves were implemented, including body integrity pressure testing up to 30,000psi. Even before the order could proceed, the ½” gate valve was subject to extensive in-house qualification procedures that simulated the intervention system, in an extreme pressure and temperature environment deployed subsea – all conducted in our own state of the art R&D facility.”

Subsea small-bore valves have to conform to the same rigorous standards for design, qualification and manufacture as the much larger bore valves. Rapid demand for smaller compact HP/HT valves has mainly been due to increased numbers of 20,000psi fields being reviewed for development.

Work began in March 2021 to develop two valve types that were required for critical application of flow control and monitoring on the Trident 20K Intervention System – ½” Double Gate Valve and

This resulted in a Double Gate Valve comprising of 2 x manual Gate Valves in one block, and a Triple Gate valve with a combination of both manual and hydraulic functions. The full valve designs were subject to numerous technical assessments as part of the API qualification, followed by strict design evaluations including; FMECA, Elasticplastic analysis, Ratcheting Assessment, and Fatigue Assessment, all of which were reviewed and verified by nominated i3Ps such as the Bureau of Safety & Environmental Enforcement (BSEE). Prototype testing takes many weeks to simulate valve operation at varying pressures, temperatures and working depths. Hydraulic actuated valves require separate testing on the hydraulic operation and the override operation.

Utilising this specialist and field-proven history with Shell Appomattox, Oliver Valvetek successfully developed and tested a Dual and Triple Gate valve assembly in accordance with API6A PR2F, API 17D and API 17G.

Clearly, the technical challenge for our engineering team, was how to achieve subsea qualification testing on much smaller and compact valves at much higher pressures and temperatures, and in rapid time. Importantly not compromising on Safety, which remains critical for valves being installed in these applications.

API technical reports provided the necessary guidance to our engineering team, and client, on analysis tools and design processes for HP/HT subsea equipment.

lines, and these valves can be required in single isolate arrangements but also in double and triple or 3 valve assemblies. Weight is a crucial factor for equipment being lifted and installed on the subsea. Using the very latest in elastic-plastic finite element software, valve designs have been optimised to produce the most compact small-bore valve to operate subsea at 20,000psi high pressure.

He continues, “Valves operating in such extreme environments require extensive and arduous qualification testing to meet API standards. This project was the most technically reviewed & evaluated one we’ve ever undertaken, and by far, the most rewarding for our engineers and designers. Everyone involved in the project is acutely aware of the leaps we’ve made in terms of research & development, engineering design, and manufacturing processes. We’re all very proud of this achievement and very much look forward to future developments with our clients.” For more information on how Oliver Valvetek can supply your subsea project with the very best valve solutions, contact us on +44 (0)1565 632636 or email: sales@valves.co.uk or visit: www.valves.co.uk

reliable, accurate and repeatable test results. The range of pressure sensors and pressure mapping systems from industry leaders GP50 & XSensor back this reputation. Tony continued, “With regards to force measurement, our load cells are preferred by aerospace companies because they are highly accurate, and the results are very repeatable. Also, the devices themselves are extremely reliable and so they are looked on very favourably by both automotive and aerospace manufacturers in particular.” Interface Force is currently re-launching its XSensor High Speed Pressure Mapping System – the company offers a range of pressure mapping systems that can be applied to anything from impact testing to pressure testing tires, runways, beds, seats and much more. The XSensor system is the first system design to allow product designers and safety testing engineers to see, record and evaluate the distribution of force from highspeed impacts on safety equipment such as helmets and body armour. The system is particularly popular with automotive and aerospace seating manufacturers as evaluating the performance of helmets and other protective equipment designed to prevent injury requires detailed understanding of the pressure distribution on the body surface during dynamic impacts. Xsensor’s high speed HS Impact system combined with the thin conformable sensors allows customers to accurately measure

those pressures and evaluate how different design configurations affect pressure distribution on impact. In addition to this, the system is also used by manufacturers of office seating, companies that develop seating for the home, and bed manufacturers. In spite of its success in the industry, Interface Force is very much looking to future development. Tony informed us, “We are building new Applications which are based around renewable energy, and we are also developing Cloud-based, Wifi and Bluetooth data acquisitions by making our devices wireless. This would mean customers being able to collect data from anywhere in the world via an App.” This ever-growing comprehensive range of indicators, signal amplifiers, data loggers and wireless transmitters has been designed to complement the extensive range of load cells, torque transducers and pressure sensors, and the range has developed to ensure that customers have access to the most accurate, up-to-date, and costeffective devices available. Another new development is in the Airport environment, where Interface Force have begun to provide wireless monitoring of equipment on, for example, luggage carousels, and this product among many others have helped Interface Force to have a very successful past 12 months especially. Interface Force’s product reliability is second to none and all of its product lines have to match this standard before ever being recommended to customers. Interface is the world’s trusted leader in technology, design and manufacturing of force measurement solutions. Its clients include a ‘who’s who’ of so many industries, and the company’s engineers around the world are empowered to create high-level tools and solutions that deliver consistent, high-quality performance. Working smarter, not harder: Aicomp & Esko’s CAD ERP solution for packaging industry automatically with results being returned to SAP without the need of any user intervention. The harmonisation of master data throughout the process enables streamlined workflows, saving time and effort on standard products and allowing designers to focus on complex design tasks.

Karl Harvey, General Manager, Aicomp UK In today’s highly competitive business environment, companies are always looking for ways to streamline their processes and boost productivity. Aicomp and Esko have formed a partnership to create integrated solutions for packaging manufacturers between Esko’s CAD Suite and Aicomp’s ERP software solutions. The goal is to develop best practices for enhancing the design and quotation processes, both in time and with accuracy of data.

The CAD integration streamlines the design process, automating quotations, reducing manual data entry, improving collaboration, and minimising errors. These efficiencies contribute to increased productivity and potentially improved profitability for businesses in the packaging industry. “Matthias, can you explain how the integration works and how to harmonise the data between ERP and CAD?” The solution enables project-level management of customer details, material descriptions, quantities, and project status. At the OneUp level,

“Matthias, what is the typical process flow for a new inquiry?” We can start a new product configuration process within SAP. It begins with entering product details in the ‘Specification in progress’ status, allowing for saving and later completion. Upon entering all details, the status changes to ‘Ready for design’, initiating integration. When the design request is delivered to CAD, SAP’s status updates to ‘In Design’. Esko’s Automation Engine calculates OneUp and MultiUps, which may undergo designer review. Upon completion, the data is released back to SAP, triggering a background configuration update to change the status to ‘Designed’. This leads to the generation of a sales document with a configuration, enabling sales reps to assess and conduct costing and pricing. Subsequently, a quotation can be provided to the customer.

As part of this initiative, they developed a standard CAD integration solution for manufacturers. Several live projects are currently utilising the new integration approach. We spoke to Matthias Waltz and Karl Harvey from Aicomp who explained integration’s key features and benefits. “Karl, how does the CAD integration solution simplify the maintenance and alignment of data across the different systems?” One key advantage of this solution is that it eliminates the need to re-key data, reducing the potential for errors and saving time. This can be particularly valuable in complex design projects where accuracy is critical. Furthermore, the solution reduces the number of sets of master data, which can greatly simplify the process of maintaining and aligning data across different systems. “Karl, can you explain how processes are improved through integration?” For standard products following FEFCO or ECMA standards, the quotation process can be automated without the need for designer intervention as these standards can be run

ARD file information for single product design (FEFCO/ECMA types, size, board ID, scores, print requirements) can be managed. The MultiUp level handles MFG file information for production sheet designs (sheet sizes, trims, number up on sheet). SAP is used to capture product style, sizes, board ID, and related data, while CAD creates product drawings, scores, and sheet size for layout optimisation. Data is integrated back to SAP, and an optional ‘Review Request’ ensures designer verification before returning details to SAP.

In conclusion, the CAD integration is an important tool for designers and businesses seeking to optimise their design processes and increase productivity.

For those that work in logistics, warehouse automation is becoming a staple in operations and continues to grow rapidly. AutoStore is a leading provider in the automation space and most will know the technology as excelling in 4 areas: ● Density – Condensing down storage footprint by 75% ● Productivity – Improving picking productivity >400% ● Scalability – Start small and invest over time as you realise your growth ● Reliability – An industry leading 99.7% uptime However, there is a 5th key benefit less talked about that is becoming more and more relevant, which is sustainability. A frightening recent statistic stated that with stricter EPC regulations coming into place, it is forecasted that 60% of warehouse space could become unlettable by 2030.

BAIT is sponsored by ERG Air Pollution Control

This means that companies looking to solve space & labour issues with automation will need to consider solutions that are environmentally friendly (typically not a common combination). AutoStore however has focused on sustainability and therefore can help companies to bridge the new regulations. AutoStore hinges on the use of robotics powered by advanced battery technology, spending time out of hours charging ready for the next shift. The robots use low amounts of power during operation, for example 10 of them use the same power as a vacuum cleaner! This gives companies the opportunity to use sustainable energy sources to power the system, often utilising the vast warehouse roof by installing solar panels that power the chargers. How You Can Become a Part of the Circular Economy E-commerce generates a vast amount of waste and environmental impact, particularly from packaging, transportation, and returns. Online shopping makes up one in seven retail purchases worldwide, and e-commerce returns generate about 5 billion tons of landfill waste and 15 million tons of carbon emissions annually. Therefore, it is crucial for e-commerce businesses to adopt circular economy practices and reduce their environmental footprint.

Hemp is a trend that is now out of its niche and enjoys a large and growing demand in the trade. Accordingly, hemp products have a high use & resale rate and are widely used on a daily basis. Because consumers concerned about their physical and mental well-being are looking for preventive health solutions, with more and more focus on natural products as a support in everyday life. And this is exactly where hemp meets the spirit of time. Because hemp products stand for a sustainable as well as conscious consumer culture and support individual health, personal wellbeing as well as a healthy lifestyle. Herbalea has therefore specialised

in the development as well as the distribution of hemp-based cosmetics & organic food. The range is spread over more than 30 products, with all products featuring highest quality, premium ingredients & healthy nutritional profiles. The brand is owned by the Swiss based company SWISS Gate AG. All products of Herbalea are also available in white label. Furthermore, SWISS Gate AG offers bulk products for further processing or integration into product formulations. It also offers the possibility to create products from scratch in private label. The circular economy is a concept that aims to reduce waste and promote the continual use of resources through reusing, repairing, and recycling. Based on the idea of “closing the loop” and creating a restorative and regenerative system, the circular economy has many benefits for the environment, society, and the economy by saving natural resources, creating jobs, and enhancing innovation providing a huge benefit to retailers and service providers alike. One way to do this is by implementing sustainable returns management solutions that

can turn returned products into new opportunities for revenue and customer satisfaction. This is where Ezi Returns Resell service comes in. It allows e-commerce sellers to resell their returned inventory all over the world through Ezi Returns’ innovative software. By using this service, sellers can benefit from: ● Reducing their environmental impact by avoiding landfill disposal. ● Reducing unnecessary transportation of returned products. ● Earning revenue from returned products that might otherwise go to waste or incur additional costs. ● Enhancing customer loyalty by offering a more sustainable and responsible way of handling returns. ● Saving time and resources by outsourcing the returns management process to Ezi Returns. Ezi Returns Resell service is an example of how e-commerce businesses can embrace the circular economy and create value from their returns. Visit the Ezi Returns website to find out more. Interceptor and Gullies We spoke to Sam Hibbert, the Gilder Environmental Operations Planner, and asked him what should facilities managers be thinking about heading into winter. “Having had a relatively hot and dry summer, it’s inevitable the winter is going to be cold and wet! Amicorp introduces ESG Stoelzle Glass Group's third reporting and rating service Sustainability Report A micorp Group has launched a new service line to help investors and businesses analyse, report and develop their Environmental, Social and Governance (‘ESG’) performance levels – and address mounting regulatory requirements.

The number of countries introducing mandatory ESG reporting around the world is increasing. Industry Excellence

Building Car Trans In this issue of Sustainability Today, we are delighted to award Transporter Engineering with our coveted Industry Excellence Award

T

here have been some hotly anticipated new car models hitting the UK roads in 2023: from the Audi Q6 e-tron, Mercedes 5 series G60, to Ford Explorer. Adaptability is the key to evolving the next generation of car transporters; with car manufacturers endlessly designing new car models, the built-in assumption is that car transporters will seamlessly fit any new model onto transporters. With load variability, weight distribution, ramp movement tolerances and drop-order sequences in mind, transporter manufacturers are constantly looking at perfecting deck shapes and the degree of articulate up/down. Transporter Engineering Ltd is the UK’s leading manufacturer of car transporters for 3-12 cars, to UK specifications. With a state-of-the-art manufacturing plant, all transporters are made from start-to-finish on-site. Established in 1992 by Keith Ripper, as part of parent company, Park Hall Group, the manufacturer has grown

exponentially over the last three decades. The facility is located in a disused airfield in Gosfield, North Essex spanning 300 acres of land. The family-owned company prides itself on Britishbuilt products to over 420 companies around the width and breadth of the UK. With six fitting bays, seven welding bays, paint preparation unit and independently owned air blast on-site, the dedicated team are well equipped for booming market-demand levels. The Essex-based company not only boasts market-leading profits, but is leading by example with sustainable best practice across the industry. Plans were made in 2016 to turn the 50 acre plot into a solar farm and Anaerobic Digester. With 112 rainy days in Essex annually, it makes sense for the company to collect the rainwater and reuse it across the factory ablutions. With further consideration given to energy usage, LED lighting and motion-sensitive lighting have been installed throughout the site. The circular economy and local biodiversity are considered at every juncture: interceptors for contaminates are installed in the drainage system, used cans are routinely crushed and recycled and bulk paint usage is monitored through mixing paint at the gun on application, vastly reducing carbon emissions. We caught up with Isla Gill, Sales and Project Manager, to find out more about the secret behind the success of Transporter Engineering, “We are delighted to share that business is booming: we pride ourselves on providing British-manufactured transporters, saving tonnes of carbon emissions annually. Our on-site stock facility holds over £3M of stock, with an extensive range of spare parts. Global Offshore Wind 2023

T

he offshore wind industry gathered together at London’s ExCeL from 14-15 June 2023 at the start of an offshore wind revolution in the UK. The industry has been set a target to quadruple offshore wind in just a few short years so that consumers across Britain will benefit from home-grown, cheap, renewable power. That goal comes with challenges – gearing up investment into the supply chain, reforming markets to make them more resilient and sustainable, managing soaring global commodity prices, scaling up floating offshore wind – and all at a time when the countries around the world are also choosing to ramp up their own offshore ambitions. The show demonstrated what the sector does best; collaborating and innovating so that, together, it can solve the challenges ahead and deliver a renewable energy future. Highlights for 2023 included: Ground-breaking conference with 200 speakers, Buzzing exhibition with 260 companies, and Networking opportunities with 5,000 attendees from 50+ countries. The Minister for Energy Security and Net Zero, Graham Stuart, underlined his commitment to continue to work closely with the offshore sector to deliver more jobs and investment into the UK. Speaking at the opening of Global Offshore Wind 2023, he told delegates: “While our flagship Contracts for Difference scheme has been immensely successful to date and much repeated around the world, we aren’t resting on our laurels. We know that prices can go up as well as down, and I’m very aware that we’re in a hugely competitive and challenging economic context. We

Panasonic introduces ZY Series to its Advanced Energy Recovery Ventilation range

P

anasonic Heating & Cooling Solutions is launching its new Advanced Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) ZY Series. The new series consists of an extended 9 model line-up including a 2,000m3/h model, all integrated with DC motors with independent control setting for air supply and exhaust. An ERV is essential to buildings to provide fresh filtered air inside. Through its ventilation system it ensures the air is not contaminated nor contains any odours potentially penetrating the new supply of air. The units possess an external static pressure (ESP) advancing up to 150 Pa with an F7 grade filter built-in as standard. In addition to this, the new ZY series has an impressive recovery power of up to 83% of heat exchange efficiency. This high recovery rate further optimises cost and can be considered a sustainable solution. Incorporated into the new models is two backdraft shutters, unique to Panasonic. Its key role is to prevent

X

air flowing in the wrong direction when the ERV is turned off and not operating. Additionally, the ERV has three connection options available: group control with a maximum of two ERV systems, direct connection to field supply switch, and ERV operation in conjunction with heating and cooling systems. The ZY series also introduces a new remote controller. Information is clearly visible through a black light and white background whilst also containing a backbox as standard. Pumps & Valves

Redefining pumping in the biogas industry W

ith the UK Government’s 2050 Net-Zero targets looming, the full potential of the biogas industry is finally being realised. With over 600 anaerobic digestion (AD) plants now operating across the country and a phenomenal biogas capacity of 2,721 megawatts, this translates to annual greenhouse gas emission cuts of 1% (with predictions of 6% by 2030 if all organic waste is treated through AD). Biomethane is therefore a solid substitute for fossil natural gas and going forward, offers a fully decarbonisation of the gas industry. PEMO PUMPS was a resounding hit at this September’s RWM (part of ESS) Expo at the NEC, where the focus was on the importance of the circular economy. The team brought an example pump with them and were particularly interested in talking to customers from the biogas industry. PEMO PUMPS are compliant with the European

Community’s Waste Directive, through its leading OFMSW treatment phases and supply compost to agriculture and floriculture. The OFMSW treatment phases reduce unnecessary landfill waste, markedly reducing carbon footprint and contributing wholeheartedly to the circular economy. Established in 1947 by Antonio Perissinotto, the marketleading company started with washing silica sands and later diversified into supplying pumps for the marble and granite cutting processes, chemical, wastewater treatment, steel industry, mining, filter press, oil & gas, through to ceramics and food and beverage sector, as a brand of Perissinotto SpA. The anti-abrasive and anti-acid slurry pumps are manufactured at the cutting-edge Milan warehouse and customers can choose from 25 basic pump models, across vertical, horizontal, submersible and multi-stage versions. With customers across 100 countries around the world, this Italian Powerhouse has enjoyed exponential growth over the decades and is happy to offer consultation around customised pumps for a variety of applications. PEMO PUMPS are centrifugal pump pioneers, with precision-designed advanced speed motors to feed filter presses and already well established across the UK and French aggregates and stone processing applications for slurry transfers and feeding filter presses. The focus at RWM 2023 was to create more brand awareness across the biogas and biomethane production chains, where robust pumps are routinely used. The anti-abrasive centrifugal pumps have

astounding anaerobic digestion processing capabilities, in recirculating OFMSW and provide a game-changer for the biogas industry. The semi-open impellers and anti-clogging volutes in the pumps are conducive to the meticulous transfer of highly viscous substrates. The HARDALLY PEMO superalloy is weathering-resistant and provides supercharged flow rates up to 1,500m3/h providing long-time efficiency, without the costly maintenance of single-screw pumps. Flood & Coast is not just an industry-leading annual event. It is an inclusive, diverse community of people working towards a sustainable future. It’s a space to share, debate and celebrate innovative solutions aimed at helping the people and places most at risk from flooding and coastal erosion. The CIWEM and Environment Agency conference team worked hard behind the scenes with support from an advisory committee of experts from across the sector. The event had a first class programmed featuring leading national and international voices from the flooding, coastal erosion and climate change world, spanning topics from adaptation at the coast to building teams fit for the future. Beyond the plenaries was an action-packed schedule of side events, a lively exhibition hall that welcomed over 75 organisations, and the Flood

This year’s event featured an array of worldclass speakers, including experts in flood risk management, climate change, coastal erosion, and resilience. Attendees also participated in interactive workshops, networking sessions, and site visits to see innovative flood and coastal defence projects in action. In addition to the main conference programme, Flood & Coast 2023 featured an exhibition highlighting the latest products, technologies, and services in the field of FCERM.

CoastSense: Understand where sea meets land M ulti-award-winning Marlan Maritime Technologies Ltd was back at the annual Flood and Coast Conference 2023 to showcase the CoastSense data service: costeffective, continuous monitoring of the physical coastal environment using a shore-based, autonomous sensor platform. CoastSense data is delivered to those responsible for managing our coastline (coastal authorities, research institutions and engineering consultants) and enables them to make better evidence-based decisions through deeper understanding of the changing coast. Coastal erosion hit the headlines earlier this year when Hemsby Beach in Norfolk was closed due to substantial erosion, which resulted in costly evacuations from homes and businesses. The British Geological Survey found that the exceptionally narrow beach at Hemsby means reduced natural coastal defence and increased wave action on the cliff front. With rising sea levels and foreshore erosion, many more coastal areas around the country will need to consider shoreline realignment for continued safety and sustainability. Our beaches continue to get smaller and are under pressure from increasingly frequent extreme weather events. As a result, coastal communities, their councils, the Environment Agency and DEFRA are preparing for climateaccelerated coastal change. For the last two hundred years, coastal management has focused on building coastal defence structures to prevent erosion, but many of these are now old and damaged. Consequently, there

XII

has been a change of focus away from large-scale, hardengineered sea defences, towards schemes that work with nature. Coastal communities are on their journey to adapt to a rapidly changing coastline for the long-term.

Intertidal topography, bathymetry, currents and wave data at high resolution in time (surveyed at least every 2 weeks) are delivered direct to CoastSense users. By supplying these continuous, multi-parameter observations of the nearshore environment, CoastSense offers users a deeper understanding of the natural processes, enabling more effective, confident management decisions and reducing environmental impact. CoastSense is ideal for monitoring extensive, remote and complex coastal areas; especially dynamic intertidal areas that are traditionally difficult and expensive to survey. The near-real time data enables rapid responses to unexpected changes in weather, morphology or damage caused by storms – particularly important in flood and coastal erosion risk management (FCERM). As climate change progresses, so does the impact on our coastline and the teams charged with managing these rapid and complex coastal changes have a lot of unanswered questions. CoastSense will help reveal the answers. For more information on CoastSense, see the website below: www.coastsense.com

Picking the right path to more sustainable hot water F

or commercial building projects the recent shift in net zero policy by the government is likely to have little impact on strategies that address energy demands, especially for the provision of hot water, a potentially key contributor to both operational costs and carbon emissions. Understanding and addressing hot water generation should therefore be an important part of an organisation’s net zero planning, but the optimal route will depend on the building, its infrastructure and usage. Adveco Live Metering of the hot water demands of a building is a quick, non-invasive, and extremely cost-effective means of gauging needs. GAME-CHANGING PLA Maximize your success for industrial teams in Your process needs progress: The integration of future-proof technology in plant collaboration has the potential to bring value to the industry. New smart applications of Industry 5.0 by eschbach erase limitations for unthought uptime. Communication: The key driver to successful manufacturing Poor shift communication is one of the primary factors leading to product quality problems, lost production and safety incidents. Furthermore, chemical manufacturing is a complex and potentially hazardous process that requires precise coordination between shifts. According to a research by S&P Global (former 451 Research), the most critical, processrelevant knowledge lies with shift managers, specifically 57%. It is essential that the current shift is always aware of any issues that arise during operation, underlining the need for transparent communication. One of the most detrimental effects that often occur is information overflow and the lack of collaborative problem-solving. Without effective digitised communication processes, shifts often operate in silos of many systems without intersection, making it harder to address problems that arise. This not only hampers teamwork across

different departments and shifts, but also prolongs resolution of issues, leading to inefficiencies. Additionally, there is often no dedicated system to distribute tasks to individuals or groups. When tasks are not completed or transferred correctly, work is duplicated or errors occur. Consequently, this incurs loss of valuable time, demotivates employees and affects overall productivity of a plant. Shift handovers are generally the point at which key details fail to be communicated, especially if team leaders rely on verbal or ad hoc information transfer. Currently, a lot of communication around shift transfer is informal, ad hoc or distributed. The 15 minute shift handover meeting is based on shift logs kept on paper, a simple spreadsheet or emails between individuals. A lack of quality communication can have a direct impact on safety, plant efficiency and production quality.

multitude of problems, a major breakdown would have severe implications for safety. Equipment malfunctions, procedural errors, and safety incidents that put both the workers and the environment at risk are only few of the potential risks. Therefore, establishing and maintaining effective communication channels is crucial to ensure a safe and efficient working environment in chemical plants. Employees in 24/7 shift operations must be able to communicate quickly, transparently and efficiently across different departments

Return of the human touch in Industry 5.0 The next generation of plant collaboration promises to revolutionise the manufacturing industry. Industrial teams need a futureproof software solution that can adapt to changing needs and embrace the latest advancements in technology. The core of

such enterprise platforms lies in combining machine precision with human intelligence. This concept, commonly known as Industry 5.0, puts humans back into the centre of manufacturing processes. Doing so, new technologies are positioned to help realise the full potential of manufacturing plants, while empowering the people working there. This introduces various benefits: enhancements to plant operations, reduction of operational costs, and with continuous improvement integrated in daily plant operations, innovation to the manufacturing process. Moreover, efficient collaboration generates trust and a sense of commitment among shop floor teams. The next level of PPM Future-proof PPM solution Shiftconnector® functions as one single point of truth (SPOT) and ensures that valuable information is not lost in the noise. This means that everyone, from the operator to the shift manager, is up to date on plant status. Digital recording of the data not only makes the information easily accessible and transparent, it also leads to greater consistency in information gathering. As the ‘eyes and ears’ of teams, operators can add videos and photos to their records, providing significant context to the gathered data. The gained knowledge can also be communicated to members of the company and site management, even if they are working from home at the time. Collaboration features,

such as file sharing and task management, enable seamless teamwork, promote productivity and reduce the number of errors. At the same time, user-defined views and overviews are made available to employees in various roles. This significantly simplifies PPM. Tangible results Improving communication across teams and shifts can produce both immediate and long-lasting benefits. Investing in organisational communication has a domino effect with measurable improvements in productivity, innovation and employee engagement. In fact, better internal communication can improve organisational productivity by as much as 25%. eschbach’s cloud-based solution also provides scalability, allowing businesses to easily expand and integrate new communication channels as they grow. Through investing in a state-of-theart software that is easily adaptable, companies can future-proof their shift communication and collaboration, enabling them to thrive in the ever-evolving process landscape. In the end, the key driving force behind a successful plant is innovation. Explosion p MacClancy and Sons Ltd was established in February 2020 by Michael MacClancy with the aim of providing explosion protection to the bulk solids, filtration and food & beverage industries. Since September 2021, when his son James MacClancy joined the business full time, the company has gone from strength to strength named as the exclusive agents to UK and Ireland for VigilEx by STIF products. The STIF company is the first French company specialised in the production of components for bulk handling products, and has gained a solid reputation by exporting a large range of different products including explosion protection equipments. Its products are sold all over the world via subsidiaries, independent local distributors, or sales and consultancy services who have been specifically selected for their conscientious and their skills. VIGILEX safety protection equipment is a product range designed and manufactured by STIF, whose consistent research and development enables them to create and manufacture these leading-edge technology machines. VIGILEX

marks the first product that a French manufacturer has entered into the explosion vent panel market that proposes a flat, curved, bent or round panels that satisfies most needs. This constant investment means that STIF is always at the top of any technological advancement in the safety protection equipment market and guarantees high performance with all its products because of its tried and tested methods and tools that have been optimised by its team of experienced and innovative engineers. James joined his dad in business in a sector that was not uncommon to him. Working previously in the oil and gas offshore UK industry, James’s experience became much needed particularly after the sad passing away of Michael that left James in charge of the company. James now runs the company out of his home office in Strathaven, Scotland, alongside his brother who currently works for the company part time.

VigiSpace® Deflector.

As a sales and consultancy business, MacClancy and Sons Ltd exclusively sell VIGILEX explosion protection to a number of industries including food & beverage, filtration, bulk material handling, LEV, and essentially anything with a combustible dusty atmosphere, and one product worth paying particular attention to is the

22 BAIT is sponsored by ERG Air Pollution Control

“We’ve now got a new product – the VigiSpace®, which is an explosion panel deflector. How it works is that you basically install the panel upside down and then fit the VigiSpace® Deflector on to the panel. That then sends any flame or explosion pressure upwards and away from any safe working area. Usually these units will be outside and so when an explosion occurs not many would think to protect the surrounding areas from the explosion pressure or flames. By surrounding areas I mean carparks or the

protection to reduce the safety zone to a minimum and increases the useful space of your installations, while ensuring maximum protection against explosions. However, please be aware that the VigiSpace® must be used with VIGILEX VL or VD.

surrounding environment of the work area to which the explosion or fire could spread to and affect buildings, vehicles or even personnel. The VigiSpace® Deflector basically protects these areas and takes away all risk factors by sending the danger upwards,” said James. The VigiSpace® Deflector works because it essentially limits the opening angle of the explosion vent and guides the pressure, flame and heat relief upwards. One of its great advantages is that by reducing the dimension of the hazardous surface the VigiSpace® helps

MacClancy and Sons Ltd largely work with OEMs who are producing filtration and LEV equipment, and lately the company has witnessed a sizeable increase in this audience. James explained, “We have seen a big influx of LEV installers and fitters recently, enquiring about and purchasing the products. One product that has been particular popular with this audience is the VigiFlap® Explosion Isolation Valve. It has many great benefits to this sector but its main benefit is that these have been certified to be installed both vertically and horizontally to which a lot of our competitors haven’t.” The VigiFlap® Explosion Isolation Valve is a non-return valve designed to prevent overpressure or flame caused by a downstream explosion such as dust collectors, filters, and cyclones, to propagate in the piping system. The valve is held open by a lever arm and can be used both at the entrance and at the exit of the filter. This allows to isolate the filter from an explosion or an overpressure. In case of explosion, the valve

BAIT is sponsored by ERG Air Pollution Control

closes and remains locked preventing the progress of the flame. The unlocking of the flap is done manually. It’s important to note that not all valves are the same, therefore, unlike other isolation valves, the VigiFlap® is certified and guaranteed to close with unlimited elbows or bends between your vessel and the valve. What really puts MacClancy & Sons Ltd ahead of its competitors is their speedy delivery times. Its ability to cut lead times in half compared to any competitors is because of its partnership with French manufactures STIF who have given MacClancy & Sons Ltd priority for the UK market. Looking ahead, James is keen to get his brother on board full-time so they can continue growing the business together. In closing, we asked James if he had anything else to add, “The entire VIGILEX range is superior to anything else that’s currently on the market. The products are so good they basically sell themselves. They are budget friendly and work everytime. They are all certified with the highest protection and we are proud to be the exclusive UK representatives for this line.” Contact M 07884 350337 info@macclancyandsons.co.uk www.macclancyandsons.co.uk

BTA drilling: Brazed versus indexable tooling Deep hole drilling applications can be approached in several ways, but one of the most effective methods is often BTA drilling. BTA stands for Boring and Trepanning Association, although it is sometimes referred to as STS or Single Tube System drilling. Unlike gun drills or twist drills a BTA drill features internal chip removal, which has advantages in both productivity and hole quality. The BTA drill head has multiple carbide cutting edges and guide pads mounted to it. Open spaces are designed into the head for chip removal, and chips are evacuated through the drill tube the head

consideration when determining whether to use brazed or indexable BTA drills. For small hole diameters – generally 12 to 20mm in diameter – brazed tools are often the first choice as it’s difficult to make small inserts and screws strong enough to withstand the torque and forces of BTA drilling. (Manufacturers of BTA drilling tools continue to make improvements in indexable BTA heads as small as 8mm in diameter, Brazed BTA heads – carbide inserts and guide however). pads are brazed onto the drill head

is threaded onto. Pressurised coolant surrounds the drill head in operation, and is key to forcing chips through the head and out the drill tube. This method of chip evacuation allows for a very clean and reliable process with excellent surface finish and high drill feed rates – typically 5-7 times faster than gundrilling at the same diameter. No peck cycles or feed interruptions are needed, resulting in reduced machine time while drilling extended depth-to-diameter ratios even greater than 40:1.

Brazed tools offer extremely close tolerances and excellent surface finish as the insert and guide pads are mounted and then ground to the specified diameter, providing almost perfect concentricity and cylindricity. Ease of use is also a benefit – simply attach the head to the drill tube and discard it when it has dulled or failed. If you experience a

tool failure, the investment in drill head isn’t as costly as repairing or replacing an indexable drill head. Finally, an indexable BTA head can only be as accurate as the tolerance of the inserts themselves; but a brazed head has been ground to a very precise tolerance from the manufacturer.

Cartridge-mounted inserts, however, typically incorporate a shim or other adjustment system to allow for a

By contrast, hole diameters starting at approximately 20mm favour indexable tools, primarily for economic reasons. Replacing larger diameter brazed tools is expensive, whereas indexing an insert and guide pads gives an easy extension on the tool’s life. Indexable BTA heads, with inserts mounted Indexable insert directly to the head manufacturers also offer an exhaustive range of much more precise diameter setting carbide grades, coatings and chip after indexing inserts and guide breakers for application-specific pads. This process does require advantages. additional equipment, however, such as a micrometer and stand or tool presetter – as well as the skills needed to accurately make the necessary adjustments. Whether you select brazed or indexable BTA drills for your deep hole drilling application, you will be rewarded with high feed rates and process reliability, along with minimal centerline deviation and excellent hole quality.

BTA drills are generally available in two forms: brazed or indexable; and tool selection is dependent upon several factors. As the name implies, brazed tools involve brazing a carbide insert and guide pads onto a steel body, while indexable BTA drilling tools have carbide inserts either directly mounted to the head with a retention screw or seated in a cartridge that is mounted to the tool. Hole diameter is the initial

The placement of the indexable inserts on BTA drill head varies by diameter and by manufacturer, and can include one or multiple inserts mounted directly to the head or set in a heat-treated cartridge which is then mounted to the head. Guide pads are typically mounted the head to counter the drilling forces and burnish the hole during drilling. Indexing, or rotating, a direct-mounted insert is as simple as loosening the retaining screw and turning the insert to expose a fresh cutting edge. If the insert and pocket were made with tight tolerances, your cutting diameter should remain reasonably consistent.

Electrostatic sparks are a viable ignition source during truck loading operations When road tankers are being loaded/ unloaded with flammable products the generation and uncontrolled accumulation of electrostatic charge can, if left unchecked, result in the release of electrostatic sparks with energy levels capable of igniting flammable vapours and combustible dusts. Grounding the road tanker mitigates the risk of static charge accumulation. An Earth-Rite II RTR® provides site operators with a means of reliably grounding the road tanker. The Earth-Rite® II RTR static grounding system: ● Patented circuitry detects the road tanker capacitance and ensures that it has a connection to the general mass of the earth (assuming the products is installed and used in accordance with the manufacturer’s Instruction Manual) ● Continuously monitors the connection to the earth bar to be 10 ohms or less

● System will shut down if greater than 10 ohms resistance is detected. Newson Gale also offers a Breakaway Connector to mitigate the risk of a damage during a drive off: ● Mitigates the risk of damage if a vehicle drive-off occurs when the operator fails to remove the clamp ● Grounding clamp quickly separates from the spiral cable ● Grounding system remains in place minimising any potential downtime ● Simple for operators to replace clamp assembly. Adding value for the entire process industry with circularity Hi, Jo Petrie here – Sales Manager at Foeth, supplier of used process equipment. My colleagues and I have talked to many process specialists and managers at recent trade fairs. We noticed that many of them find it hard to acquire new machines due to the increasing prices and long waiting times for new machines. Meanwhile, we see manufacturers close down plants or relocating their production, causing equipment to become redundant or idle. These manufacturers are starting to realise there is more value in letting the machines

enter the pre-owned market, rather than letting them sit or get scrapped. As Europe’s largest dealer in preowned process machines, Foeth strives to connect both sides. By acquiring idle process equipment, production lines, and even entire plants and finding a suitable new production process, we give this equipment a second life. Promoting the use of pre-owned equipment also enables us to reduce the production of new machines and thereby mitigate CO2 emissions. Please feel free to contact me and I will be happy to provide you with further information on the advantages of choosing Foeth as your partner for circular solutions in the process industry! Following a £1.5million investment by Chloros Environmental for a bespoke design waste transfer facility in Hartlebury, Worcestershire in 2019, GRG Waste UK have continued to make key investments to improve service, compliance, and environmental performance. With a diverse network of offtake partners, Novum Waste Recycling was established in late 2021 to meet the everincreasing demand for sustainable treatment solutions for problematic streams. Since inception, Novum has opened 14 trans frontier shipment (TFS) routes, enabling GRG companies to offer R-code solutions for a range of unique specialist materials, with a further 12 applications to go live by the end of 2023. In January 2023, the highly anticipated closed-loop aerosol recycling plant was installed at Greenway Environmental’s site in Bootle, Liverpool. This capability offers 100% gas capture, waste-to-energy, and landfill diversion, turning an otherwise challenging waste stream into a true circular economy. The facility utilises BAT (best available technology) to separate the components and is the only complete R-code aerosol recycling solution that meets stringent regulations on hazardous waste disposal, worker safety, and greenhouse gas emissions. To add to the group’s growing in-house treatment capabilities, BKP Waste and Recycling recently invested in an Industrial Packaging Decontamination Process. Designed to handle a wide range of chemical contaminants and materials, the process allows maximum reuse of large containers and recycling of plastic and steel components. Investments are ongoing with major site developments taking place at their site in Romsey, including the construction of high solid wash out bays, enabling the group to accept and treat high solid tanker loads requiring dig out by appointment to improve customer experience and service offering. Burg-Wächter’s Secure Communities Scheme aids mental health charity Burg-Wächter UK’s ‘Secure Communities Scheme’ has rewarded the work of a Southampton mental health charity. Mayfield Nurseries is a garden centre that uses donations and sales income to provide a place for people with mental health issues and learning disabilities to thrive through social and therapeutic horticulture. Burg-Wächter received an application from Mayfield Nurseries for the freeof-charge support that the security specialist’s Secure Communities Scheme provides. Impressed with the ethos of the garden centre and the activities it offers to help boost the wellbeing of its local community, Burg-Wächter staff were moved to help the charity with its security needs. The charity had been having issues with post being taken or destroyed, and clearly needed a means of keeping its postal deliveries safe. Burg-Wächter therefore donated a ‘Gate & Railing Box’, which takes the form of a convenient and secure storage place for post and small packets. The galvanised steel box offers generous post capacity, which is secured by an integrated lock, supplied with two keys. Designed to be fixed to gates or fences, the vertical post slot is accessible between the fence and gateposts, while the main body of the box is safely fixed

behind the fence or gate. The Gate & Railing Box is from a wide range of post and parcel security options supplied by Burg-Wächter.

about the security of their premises, equipment or storage areas. The company’s Secure Communities Scheme is its way of saying thank you to community leaders for supporting people in their area.

Mayfield Nurseries is a subsidiary charity of Solent Mind, the regional mental health services provider. Clare Grant is Assistant Director of Services for both organisations. She comments, “Burg-Wächter’s donation is really appreciated. Thank goodness we can now keep our post and parcels safe and secure! Applying for the Burg-Wächter donation was simple. I went onto the company’s website and followed the link to its Secure Communities Scheme. Then all I had to do was to email some details to an address given there.”

The type of project or organisation that the scheme is open to is very wide-ranging. It could be a scouts group; a local sports group like a cycling or football club; a school after-hours club; a hospital or healthcare community programme; a provider of events for children or pensioners; a facilitator of village activity; or a town/village charity.

Burg-Wächter’s Secure Communities Scheme gives regional community leaders and volunteers the chance to win a security kit worth up to £200 for their organisation. Any regional initiative that is run by or supports the local community can apply. Burg-Wächter launched the scheme in recognition of the fact that people around the country who are doing their bit for their community should not have to worry

As long as the initiative is run by or supports the local community, and it has a specific security need, Burg-Wächter would like to hear about it. Successful applicants will each receive a tailored security kit to help secure property, premises, equipment or storage areas to the value of £150-200 at retail price. The Secure Communities Scheme is an ongoing initiative, which has already helped over 100 regional causes through the provision of over 2,000 pieces of security equipment.
