Most learning environments in the UK are not air-conditioned, meaning they get very hot in the summer. Excessive heat can make it hard to focus because the brain is preoccupied with trying to regulate the body temperature. Blinds help to cool classrooms in the summer by absorbing the sun’s heat.

Blinds from Yewdale, selected as a Top Exhibitor at Education Estates, are designed for maximum child safety and feature flame-retardant fabric for fire safety compliance. They are tamper-proof, easy to install, and maintenance-free.

A common issue on a hot day is that the windows must be open. The wind blows the blind and causes a distracting clattering noise. Yewdale cassette blinds with side channels solve this issue. The side channels hold the fabric securely in place, meaning windows can be opened and fresh air can ventilate the room without causing a distraction.

Yewdale blinds can be supplied with a remote control or detachable crank to ensure only the teacher can control them.

When air purity is critical, oil free air is essential

From pharmaceutical, food and beverage and life sciences to packaging, automotive, oil and gas and many industries in between, a reliable source of compressed air is vital. 70% of all industries use some form of compressed air. In any industry it is used, compressed air directly or indirectly encounters the product being manufactured.

In the food and beverage industry, for example, this means the packaging or containers holding the food or beverage, or the food or beverage itself. In pharmaceuticals, this means pills or bottles holding the pills, and so on. When using oil-flooded air compressors – especially if they are not wellmaintained – there is a risk of oil passing through the compression chamber, making it downstream, and contacting the product. This jeopardises the health and safety of the consumer.

Therefore when your operation requires clean air, oil-free compressed air is critical for your endproduct and production processes. An increasing number of industries – including food and beverage, pharmaceutical, automotive, medical, electronics, and power – are moving to oil-free compressed air systems. Oil-free compressor applications are predicted a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 4.8%, according to Grand View Research, as industrial sectors move away from more traditional oil-injected technology.

While there are currently few government regulations in place regarding the mandated use of oil-free air compressors, there is a growing push to change this in some industries. This is leading to an increase in multi-national corporations switching to an ISO 8573-1 certified class 0 oil-free compressed air system.

Sullair has been providing compressed air solutions since 1965 and in 2017 joined the Hitachi group of companies and their more than 100 years’ compressor experience. Built on 50 years of expert Hitachi oil-free engineering solutions, the Sullair DSP oil free compressor range carries the ISO8573-1 Class 0 certification and Sullair Oil Free Seal, offering quality assurance helping ensure the highest quality production in manufacturing facilities around the world. The award winning Sullair OFD1550 oil free air compressor is built for long-lasting performance and brings Class 0 Oil Free Air to the energy, oil and gas industries – plantside, refineryside and jobsite – for environmentally sensitive applications.

For food and beverage manufacturers and packagers Sullair oil free compressed air solutions are a key ingredient in the process ensuring that the environments in which they operate are free from as many potential contaminants as possible, therefore, not impacting the product quality that producers

have worked hard to achieve.

As food and beverage manufacturing, bottling, and packaging processes continue to evolve and become ever more mechanised, compressed air will continue to play a vital role. Using oil free compressed air systems can be crucial in manufacturing and packing to reduce the risk of moisture and contaminants entering the compressed air stream, and ultimately, spoiling products.

Compressed air is used in a range of capacities, including bottle and container blowing, fermentation, packaging, automation, air tools and conveying and transporting the produce or end product. Such variety in applications means that selecting a compressor with the most appropriate power, flow, pressure and most importantly quality of air is critical.

Sullair products have established a reputation for reliability, durability, and performance, giving customers peace of mind. One customer is still cranking up a 40 year old Sullair compressor every day, running as consistently today as it did when it first fired into life four decades ago. Food and beverage manufacturers demand reliability to ensure the highest standards are met and the risk to unplanned downtime is kept to a minimum. A Sullair DSP compressor can help ensure those requirements are met.

Ghostfish Brewing Company is one such company that has hugely benefitted from Sullair’s oil-free compressor. Seattle-based Ghostfish produces certified gluten-free beer, perfect for those with coeliac disease or wheat/gluten intolerance and is currently the best-selling gluten-free India Pale Ale (IPA) across the USA. Compressed air is used during the canning procedure: from attaching can tops, moving water off the can tops, adding plastic can carriers and finally, for keg container washing.

Brian Thiel, Co-Founder of Ghostfish, commented, “It’s dependable and reliable for us. When the beer is ready, we need to be able to package it during that

timeframe, and Sullair allows us to do that. Now that we have a Sullair oil free system, I can sleep well at night.”

Sullair oil free compressors all produce class zero oil free air as specified in ISO 8573-1, minimising the risk of contaminating the process air or gas. It makes Sullair oil free systems ideal for use in all systems: contact; non-contact; and high risk.

Food contamination of any form can have a major impact on consumer trust and the manufacturing brand, as has been seen numerous times over the decades in the United Kingdom. Some risks can never be eliminated completely, so taking steps to minimise them is crucial, and employing oil free compressed air solutions is one such move. Alongside the range of compressors, Sullair also provides a choice of air treatment products designed to help remove contaminants and moisture from the compressed air stream. This includes desiccant compressed air dryers, refrigeration compressed air dryers, filtration and mist elimination systems and condensate zero loss drains.

Sullair was founded in 1965 and became a Hitachi Group Company in July 2017 and is part of the Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems Co Ltd compressor portfolio. Being part of Hitachi has brought significant synergy in terms of product portfolio, geographic coverage and product R&D among others. For over 10 years now, the UK has been an integral hub for supporting all the Sullair authorised distributors and end-users within the EMEA and C.I.S region, and it has a regional team focused on supporting authorised distributors representing and looking after Sullair products in the EMEA and C.I.S region.

Sullair is working hard to keep its eyes on the future to ensure that it innovates and integrates new technologies, drives efficiency in both its own business and the products it manufactures for the future to best support its customers, end-users and society as a whole.

Thinking Focus has a core belief: individuals, teams, and business units underperform, not by choice; they can't get out of their own way. They get stuck with unhelpful assumptions, self-imposed limitations and beliefs waiting for permission; all of which limits performance. And that’s before you add organisational constraints into the mix.

Thinking Focus places mindset and thinking at the heart of everything they do, and that’s because you significantly improve your results when leaders have the right attitude; they’re more likely to engage their people; they will better transition their people through organisational change. A team is more productive when they feel you have their backs; they’ll be bolder and take calculated risks.

The Future of Interactive Videos

The brutal reality is before you invest in your people, you need to create an environment of trust and capability to handle the unhelpful inner voices that hold us back.

Cutting costs or improving sustainability in coding and marking?

Amid a cost of living and climate crisis, manufacturers are battling to try and cut costs, while improving sustainability. Rotech can evaluate your coding and marking processes to help you achieve the best of both worlds.

Often overlooked but hugely important; your production line coding could be a key component to becoming more cost and eco-efficient. Replacing outdated technology and processes will allow you to reduce your carbon footprint, while also removing extra expenses.

At Rotech, we are advocates for newer and greener thermal inkjet printers. The maintenance-free systems, only require recyclable cartridge-based inks that do not contain harmful MEK fluids. Unlike

aging CIJ printers, TIJ does not need regular on-site servicing, reducing the overall lifetime value and environmental impact of travel, extra resources, and spare parts.

Where labels are concerned, the environmental impact is obvious. Not only do they promote waste and limit recyclability, they are costly and currently experiencing supply chain disruption. So, are they always necessary?

How can lessons from elite motorsport unlock business performance?

For most of us the world of motorsport can seem a world away from our day-to-day work and personal development.

However, when you look at it a little closer it starts to sound more familiar. In Formula One you have 10 teams, each who employ between 400-1,000 people and that is not only engineers to deliver performance on track but other departments such as Finance, HR and Marketing.

When you break it down, what effectively you have is 10 SME businesses linked with key partners and investors (ie. sponsors) all looking for success.

So how can we get these same high-performance insights and take what we see on-track and transfer them over to our own personal and business goals?

This is where Ignition Human Performance can give you the inside track. A network of professionals from an elite motorsport background who understand how strategies and results can be improved within companies of all sizes and across many different industries, unlocking business and

human performance.

Commitment to Carbon Neutrality – Level Blue

As a lime manufacturer, Lhoist recognises that the nature of its operations has the potential to influence the ecology and communities around its facilities. Owning and operating a diverse range of geological deposits and manufacturing facilities across the world, means that the responsible use of these natural resources, and the protection of the surrounding environment, has been a natural part of its operations for a long time.

We understand the responsibility we bear towards sustainability and acknowledge the interests of our customers in understanding how we plan to contribute, identify opportunities, and structure ourselves to be part of the transition to a low-carbon and sustainable-growth economy.

There are also aims to establish standards with a common, robust framework on carbon accounting rules, and incentivise industry towards cleaner technologies and reducing CO2 emissions.

Carbon capture Sustainability means taking responsibility with long-term vision but technical hurdles remain. Abating lime carbon emissions is very challenging for a process that generates inherent emissions from the chemical transformation of limestone to quicklime.

It is recognised that the ultimate goal for Lhoist needs to include carbon capture and storage/ utilization schemes since even a zero-carbon fuel source would still associate lime manufacture with a CO2 release.

Of course, a way of tackling carbon, is to reduce and avoid CO2 emissions where possible, whilst any remaining parts can be offset to generate carbon neutral products. Here we invest in energy efficiency and renewable energy projects.

What does LEVEL|BLUE® mean for you, our customers?

LEVEL|BLUE® is our answer to deliver for our customers carbon-neutral reagents, and as of January 2023, all UK products will be carbonneutral by reducing CO2 emissions where it is possible and offsetting the remainder with carbon reduction projects in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas protocol.

These reduction projects are certified by Gold Standard and Verified Carbon Standard and support the UN Sustainability Development Goals.

Moreover, you, our customer, will be in a position to report your Scope 3 Emissions neutralisation when using

our reagents, and we will provide you with internationally recognised certification that will demonstrate your support and efforts on carbon neutrality.

3 Scopes of Emissions

The Greenhouse Gas protocol divides the CO2 emissions into three scopes:

t Scope 1 Emissions – Direct emissions that come from sourced owner or controlled by a company, eg. running vehicles.

t Scope 2 Emissions – Indirect emissions from purchased electricity consumed by a company.

t Scope 3 Emissions – Emissions that a company is indirectly responsible for across its value chain, eg. from buying products from its suppliers, and from its own products when their customers use them.

How does LEVEL|BLUE® work?

In line with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, we have brought together the necessary hard data over the years to measure all emissions from our UK facilities. It enables us to offset the exact amount of still released CO2 emissions from our production by investing in certified carbon reduction projects.

The specifications, quality and consistency of Lhoist UK products remain unaltered and their ordering process also remains unchanged, as all products from Lhoist UK will conform to LEVEL|BLUE®

Pump Manufacturing Company of the Month

Celebrating 76 years’ service to industry

In this issue of Sustainability Today we are pleased to announce PEMO PUMPS as our Pump Manufacturing Company of the Month.

PEMO PUMPS is a brand of Perissinotto S.p.A. and was founded in 1947 by Antonio Perissinotto. Initially the company focused on the aggregates sector and specifically on washing silica sands, where the need to move large quantities of water and sand led to the development of a design for pumps that would resist abrasion. We spoke with Massimo Ghio, Sales Area Manager at Perissinotto S.p.A. PEMO PUMPS, who unravelled the company’s history to us in more detail.

“In the post-war period, driven by the construction boom, our pumps began to be used in marble and granite cutting processes, where sand is part of the abrasive mix. In the early 1960s we made considerable changes to the modernisation and development of our products which then in the 1970s enabled us to enter new markets when new challenges opened up to us that included moving into the steel industry. We then continued our expansion into the 80s with the design and production of pumps for the chemical and wastewater treatment sectors.”

This extensive history favoured the development of new models of centrifugal pumps for the company. Combined with double-speed motors that were used to feed filter presses, where to this day, PEMO PUMPS continues to be a sector leader in with its vast range of various models, designed according to customers’ needs.

The 2000s welcomed the third generation which further promoted the growth of the company, and thanks to technical innovations and the use of new materials – that are increasingly resistant to abrasion and corrosive agents – this confirmed the uniqueness of PEMO PUMPS products. And, of course, a large amount of gratitude goes to the work of the company’s technicians who are always ready to meet and understand the needs of the customer.

Fast forward to today, and PEMO PUMPS is

manufacturing at the top of its game, going from strength to strength each new year.

“In 2023, in addition to celebrating our 76th birthday and the 42 thousandth PEMO pump placed on the world market in more than 100 countries, we have set ourselves a very ambitious goal, namely to make ourselves known and appreciated in the French and English markets as well. However, we are not completely silent in these two countries as we already have several pumps installed, mainly in the aggregates, tunnelling and stone processing sectors, where our pumps are used for transferring slurry and for feeding filter presses,” added Massimo.

In attempt to continue growing the brand, future participation in the European trade fairs Bio360 EXPO (Nantes), Pollutech (Lyon), The World Biogas Expo and RWM & Letsrecycle Live in Birmingham have all played a massive part in introducing the PEMO brand not only to operators in the biogas and biomethane production chain, but also to all sectors where robust and indestructible pumps are required.

PEMO’s technology involves centrifugal pumps with semi-open impellers and anti-clogging volutes that enable the transfer of highly viscous substrate containing fibres, filaments and large solid parts.

“The use of our pumps in this area has numerous advantages over the

more commonly used single-screw pumps, and in particular, thanks to the use of our ‘HARDALLOY PEMO’ wear-resistant superalloy maintenance intervals become very long – even 5-6 years,” said Massimo.

Alongside its brand development and marketing, PEMO has largely invested into the development of its headquarters in Vimodrone, which covers an area of 12,000m² and employs around 70 employees. This means that the entire production cycle of the pumps takes place at its own premises and under its own control and management. “We would like to point out that all the material for our pumps is cast at foundries located in northern Italy, with which we boast a 10 year partnership and an almost perfect relationship and affinity. This allows us to have a very high level of quality, which places us at the top of the market,” added Massimo.

In addition to those already mentioned, the main sectors where PEMO PUMPS are currently preferred include:

t Anaerobic digestion processes: used in the biogas production sector, where its pumps are used to load and recirculate OFMSW to anaerobic digesters

t Ceramic industry: where the liquid slip has highly abrasive characteristics as it combines a high concentration of solid product and a temperature that can reach 80ºC

t Chemical industry: where its pumps can be customised with highly corrosion-resistant materials, they are often preferred for their robustness in applications where the mixture contains solid particles

t Paper industry: where paper pulp has to be transferred to the various production stages

t Painting plants: where paint can be pumped at medium to high pressures

t Food industry: where the washing of vegetables and products often requires the circulation of water with soil or other impurities to the final treatment

t Fertiliser plants: with a focus on the Green Economy.

In closing, Massimo added, “We are proud that our range of

pumps include different types of flow rates up to 2,000m³/h and pressures of up to 24 bar. We have a wide range of models with rubberised bodies and impellers, or in our PEMO HARDALLOY superalloy with high abrasion resistance and hardness up to 800 Brinell, which guarantees excellent abrasion resistance even with fluids with very high concentrations of solids and pressures up to 24 bar. Finally, please note that PEMO PUMPS can provide the maximum abrasive particle size that the pump can transfer and the concentration of solids in the fluid for each of its pumps.”

Specific Power: How to save energy & costs

HPC compressors are designed to ensure they save customers on energy costs. How? By having the best ‘Specific Power’.

Specific Power (SP) is the ratio of total energy used by the compressor and its compressed air output (at a stated pressure). The lower the SP, the greater the efficiency, and savings.

Taking HPC’s SM13 Rotary Screw Compressor’s @ 6 Bar, we can see the SP is 6.4 KW/m³/min: 8.56kW (Total Energy Used) ÷ 1.34m³/min (Compressed Air Output) = 6.4 KW/m³/min (SP).

Equivalent non-HPC compressors typically have a higher SP, exceeding 7.0 KW/m³/min.

How does this save you money?

This is how the cost saving is calculated: SP x Total Volume Compressed Air x Cost Per kWh = £. And this means that investing in a compressor from HPC saves you money in the long-term. In fact, HPC saves customers up to £25,000 in electricity costs per year.

If you are looking for a compressed air solution, then speak to an HPC Authorised Distributor or contact HPC directly. We will show you how choosing HPC can save you money and turn your operation greener. www.hpccompressors.co.uk

Turn your steam into savings

At the EMEX Expo 2022, the feedback from attendees to the Heliex Power team was clear; unprecedented cost increases are making it harder than ever to balance the day to day running of industrial plants with planning for a low carbon future.

While times have been tough for industry, Heliex Power has found its Twin Screw Turbine (TST) has, in some cases, been the difference between having to pause or shut down production. Why?

Heliex Power’s TST optimises plants by harnessing the power of saturated process steam and generates low-cost electricity via their patented steam screw expander technology. The outcome? Electricity which can be used onsite or sold to the grid.

Heliex Power has over 80 units in operation in a wide range of industries including Medical Waste Incineration, Agriculture, Combined Heat and Power (CHP), Chemical & Pharmaceutical, Industrial Waste Incineration, Food & Beverage, Timber, and other specialist applications. To date, Heliex Power TSTs have helped clients save over 4.8 million kWh of power and 3.9 MTe of carbon!

New potential for saving energy and costs

Regal Rexnord/Nicotra Gebhardt presents COPRA, a new plug fan system with special characteristics specifically tailored to the requirements of data centres and applications for ventilation and air-conditioning. COPRA features three strengths that previously seemed almost impossible to combine: compactness, high system efficiency and high power density. The aerodynamically redesigned aluminium impeller has an advanced 3D geometry. The drive is a particularly short internal-rotor motor, whose hub does not obstruct the airflow in the impeller. As a result, high efficiency is achieved despite the conveniently short axial length. In combination, the new plug fan deliver static system efficiencies of around 70% and more, with maximum power density. And thanks to the new system’s low installation losses, this advantage applies especially to even in tight

installation spaces.

Another important reason to choose COPRA is its good part-load performance, since fans do not usually run at full load. The system shows its strengths here too, delivering maximum efficiency. Especially when used in multiple wall configurations (fan grids), its compactness in axial length offers clear advantages. So do its particularly small diameters for high airflows. Thanks to these properties, COPRA can save considerable costs not only in new installations but also in energy modernisation.

On the paving side of the business, the new PROTAC spray paver uses technology that integrates the spray feature into the machine. The spray unit is easily activated and controlled via a robust and userfriendly touch display directly on the control panel. The SD2500CS PROTAC applies emulsion using highprecision spray nozzles. The controlled spray pressure reduces mist generation to a minimum, safeguarding the operator and environment. Featuring a 2100l emulsion tank the PROTAC can go from 0.2 up to 1.6kg/m² in spray density.

The Z.ERA program at Dynapac is helping accelerate a continual push towards an emission-free workplace in construction, with a range including two rollers, electric

paver and three models of electric vibratory plates.

The latest addition to the portfolio is the electric City Paver SD1800W e. The electric drive comes with a highly efficient three-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) that provides 55kW of power to the hydraulic system. In terms of paving autonomy, and depending on the type of job, application, and intensity of the work cycle, the SD1800W e offers up to four hours of rugged performance with one single charge. Charging is done with a provided CE-compliant Type 2 plug for 400V, 6-32A, 1.4-22.0kW AC. It takes approximately three hours to charge from 5% to 80% at 400V 22kW (AC) or 40 minutes from 80kW (DC.) The SD1800W e is the perfect choice on busy construction sites, with reduced heat, vibration and zero air and oil filters: this is a smooth-running machine. Showcasing at Hillhead Expo 2022, industry experts were impressed with this latest addition to the Dynapac family.

Heroes come in many shapes and sizes and in the case of Mr Bug they come in the shape of Devonborn wriggly mealworms that are transforming the nutritional landscape of dog treats, a sector traditionally associated with low grade meats, shameless fillers, salt, sugar and a plethora of synthetic nasties.

Mr Bug’s rural insect farm breeds plump, nutrientdense mealworms that offer more calcium than milk, more B12 than salmon, more iron than spinach and all 9 essential amino acids! More importantly still Mr Bug is starting to foster urgently required jobs to a rural sector too often starved of progressive pioneering businesses.

As a fervent believer in the circular economy, Mr Bug feeds its increasingly revered grubs on Cornish bran, a vitamin-rich by-product of local wheat milling which makes a truly digestible and healthy monoprotein. The resulting frass (mealworm poo) acts as a ‘at one with nature’ fertiliser that supports the next wheat harvest.

Currently the environmental impact of pet food

production is far from satisfactory, equating to the total environmental impact of a land mass twice the size of the UK.

In stark contrast, mealworm powder with its distinctive nutty twang mixes seamlessly with ‘real food’ ingredients like parsnips, peanut butter, apples, beetroot, honey & turmeric.

Introducing the Heliomotion Solar Tracker

Are your buildings future proof? Are you concerned about massively increased energy prices? Are you worried about climate change and your carbon emissions?

Introducing the Heliomotion Solar Tracker – the efficient, innovative and intelligent alternative to roof-based solar panel systems – winner of ‘Best Sustainable Product or Technology Award’ from Build It magazine in 2022. Quick to install, no scaffolding or heavy lifting equipment required. Heliomotion was designed in Finland and is manufactured in England, from top grade steel and aluminium.

Unlike roof-based solar panel installation, solar tracking systems follow the sun from sunrise to sunset every day. Not only do they turn, but they tilt to mirror the sun’s angle as well. Because they are dual axis, in the UK they generate around 40-45% more electricity than a static ground-mounted or roof-mounted solar panel installation, which is only optimal for the middle few hours of the day. Systems are ground mounted using either a custom steel plate and ground anchors, which we supply, or a concrete plinth. Ground anchors are more eco friendly and

they are receiving the best possible service from industry experts. Supporting a sustainable future

Reduce emissions. Net zero 2030. Reduce energy dependency. Now or Never. 1.5 Degrees. Heading for a climate disaster. Governments must act now. New energy strategies. The cost of climate inaction.

These are just some of the soundbites from the news in recent weeks as the acceleration to net zero 2030 goals speeds up. With rising energy costs across the globe putting pressure on household and commercial expenses, and the actions of Russia in Ukraine emphasising the need to reduce energy dependencies from overseas, harnessing energy from the Earth’s elements is in full focus.

start in many different areas – monopiles, ladders, walkways, boat landings, guard rails and rotor heads – each of which can compromise the overall integrity of the structure. Protective coatings that can be applied to prevent corrosion from developing, or halt its progression, are essential to providing long term asset protection.

And as we have seen in many other industries, a major consideration to the ideal protective coating is surface preparation. The need for aggressive blasting to apply protective coatings is a burden in these confined & hostile environments, let alone the contamination to surroundings. Preventative coatings that can mitigate this issue are a major step forward, combine that with ease of application & minimal manpower and offering benefits to time, long-term protection, costs and production.

One brand paving the way to simpler futures is Easy-Qote; a brand on a mission to change the way corrosion prevention is viewed, and conducted, with it being applied simply as a patch.

Earlier this year the UK published its strategy for increasing energy independence. Nuclear, wind, solar and hydrogen all play a part in that with strong targets to achieve by 2030; hydrogen capacity to double and solar to increase by up to 5 times the current outputs. The Offshore Wind target is to generate 50GW of energy by 2030, currently sitting at 11GW. These are ambitious targets and that sort of commitment is going to take some serious infrastructure installation projects.

The UK are not alone in the push to renewable energy, especially offshore wind. The USA conducted an offshore wind lease sale off the coast of New York, fetching over $4 billion, a major step in the US push to renewable energy. In March we saw a new study reveal that the Asia-Pacific region’s wind energy sector could soon account for nearly a quarter of their power this decade, with China set to be the largest market by 2030. And in the same time the Government of India announced funding for a offshore wind energy test facility by India’s National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE). Since the conditions in Indian waters are different to those experienced in Europe, there is a need to perform testing to ensure wind turbines are designed for their best performance.

The future of offshore wind is looking bright, and busy. But to make this energy truly sustainable, preventative asset protection is vital to ensuring longevity.

The push to offshore wind is to take advantage of the power of the wind produced at sea, moving at a much higher and more consistent speed thanks to the open space and absence of structures. What is a benefit to production, however, poses a logistical disadvantage to construction and maintenance along with an aggressive corrosive environment. These increased offshore developments will see stronger winds and bigger waves, beneficial to production, but adding pressure to not just the installation phase, but ongoing operation and maintenance.

In this corrosive environment a wind turbine can see corrosion

With traditional approaches we would see a variety of materials and equipment brought to site: surface preparation tools, coatings and application tools, rope access equipment and PPE. In the case of Easy-Qote, one individual or small team is armed with a wire brush and a roll of patches. Simply brush loose corrosion away, apply the patch and return to base. No blasting is required avoiding the all-important issue of environmental contaminants. Overhead costs will be greatly reduced with transportation and manpower costs down. Instead, protection is immediate and with a service lifetime of 25-30 years, the asset can now reach its full potential with long term protection.

These ambitious targets for 2030 will take swift and dedicated action, and it should be done with longevity at the core. A sustainable future is not just working with greener energies and renewable sources, but it involves extending the lifetime of assets and existing infrastructure, so that they can carry out their duties long beyond what the environment might normally allow.

Put simply, with Easy-Qote, we are committed to helping the wind energy industry reduce failure from corrosion issues, improve productivity, longevity, and as a result, make renewable energy truly sustainable.

CSG: Waste management

Engaging with a specialist waste company can help businesses reduce overheads and increase profitability. That’s the view of Helen Bentham, National Accounts Manager at leading waste management company CSG, who said many businesses squander manpower by double-handling waste.

Helen said, “One of the fundamental mistakes we often see is businesses treating their waste as household waste when, in reality, it needs to be viewed completely differently. Businesses tend to get bogged down in segregation as you would at home with a bin for every single waste stream. Trade waste is not so much about that. Of course, it is important to segregate waste, but the fundamental principle should be to eliminate as much waste as possible.

“The first thing we do when we visit a new customer is to conduct a waste mapping exercise and determine where waste streams can be eliminated or reduced. We’ll then look to streamline the disposal of the remaining waste and examine whether some materials can be reused

or recycled. The savings can be very significant.”

Helen said engaging with a waste specialist has other benefits rather than just the bottom line, including obtaining accreditations, such as ISOs, and impressing customers when they visit site.

CSG offers a total waste management solution that stretches well beyond collection and disposal. Combining a range of waste management disciplines such as hazardous waste removal, industrial cleaning, emergency response and waste system maintenance, CSG minimises the amount of waste that ends up going to landfill.

Recycling Shredders Company of the Month

Expert shredders keep the nation shredding

Sustainability Today is delighted to award Mach Tech Services with our coveted Recycling Shredders Company of the Month Award for outstanding waste recycling shredders.

Mach Tech Services was founded in 2004 by Managing Director, Joe Hoyle, Operating Director, David Ingham, and the late Colin Wood, as a service company for industrial shredding machinery. One of its partnerships is with Austrian company Lindner Recyclingtech; this leading specialist business offers award-winning Lindner machines to recycling industry sectors. Mach Tech can supply static shredders, plants and mobile shredders to businesses.

The waste recycling sector is under scrutiny as the UK moves rapidly towards a more sustainable future. Plastic film made of polyethylene and polypropylene is often the villain in recycling, with its short product life cycle accounting for at least 40% of global waste. There is a need for efficient, robust plastic recycling and the latest Lindner Jupiter BW shredder is the best model on the market: the Superhero of shredders.

Showcasing the Lindner Jupiter BW at the K 2022 Düsseldorf Expo, Lindner Recyclingtech proudly demonstrated the shredder’s prowess to interested delegates. The latest Jupiter series expertly handles plastic film recycling for downstream NIR sorting processes. This primary shredder has a powerful countershaft drive that releases powerful rotational energy, meaning less overall energy is consumed. This precisiondriven machine has a long service life, with minimal maintenance costs, making this a smart investment. With robust duo cutting counter knives and scrapers cutting plastic film into A4/ A3 sizes, this is a state-of-the-art shredder for rigid plastic films. Lorenza was also proud to tell us about the apprenticeship scheme, “After a two year apprenticeship scheme, our first apprentice is now working with us as a trained Mechanical Engineer. With the added bonus of being trained directly from Lindner as well.

“By training the next generation of engineers, we are continuing to offer the same dedication to service and products that are unrivalled in quality and endurance.”

Alongside the Oldham facility, there is a sales office covering the southern sales and customer care area, offering quality specialist advice and support across all sectors.

Mach Tech prides itself on offering outstanding customer service, as Lorenza outlines, “We have an open-door policy which allows interested parties onto our existing customers’ sites to see our products in application and gives the freedom to speak to existing customers about the product and our services that we provide.”

Hamilton Waste and Recycling in Scotland is a leading recycling business and needed a shredder for mixed waste on its site, they were delighted with the Lindner shredder provided by Mach Tech, as Hamilton Waste and Recycling Manager, Ken Chrystal, elaborated, “It’s now more important to us than ever to invest in the best technology, which can keep up with the pace at which our business is growing. Mach-Tech Services and Lindner Shredders fit well with our practice. We look for overall reliability in a machine, limited downtime and long-lasting wear parts and we feel that our Lindner shredders have lived up to exactly what we were sold.”

UNISIG’s approach to automating surgical instrument manufacturing

As surgical instrument manufacturers pursue greater throughput while facing increased labor costs, automating the medical instrument manufacturing process has become a necessity. However, integrating automation into the gundrilling process for drilling deep holes in extremely precise surgical instruments in lights-out operation is a major engineering challenge requiring more than simply pairing a robot with a deep-hole drilling machine.

The right machine, tools and process must all come together to create small holes with extreme precision in difficult-to-machine materials such

as titanium and surgical stainless steel. More importantly, the entire system must flow from a unified concept where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

To meet these challenges, UNISIG developed its UNE6-2i-750-CR dual independent spindle gundrilling machine. The UNE6-2i is capable of gundrilling hole diameters ranging from 0.8-6mm in part lengths measuring up to 30 inches with depth-to-diameter ratios from 20:1 to more than 100:1. The machine has a maximum combined drilling speed of 28,000rpm and a 3,000psi (207) bar programmable flow-based coolant system with

dedicated pumps for each spindle to ensure precise coolant pressure control.

Automating hundreds of cycles of precision manufacturing, however, is not possible unless the overall operation is considered from the outset. Surgical instrument manufacturing is a sequential process: parts must be loaded into the machine in a particular way for specific operations that happen in a specific order.

Workpiece length, shape and configuration determine where it is gripped by the robot when loaded into a machine, moved from spindle to spindle for drilling, residual cutting fluid removed, and returned to the pallet. Where a part is gripped impacts where it is clamped for drilling to ensure accuracy. Every variable along the process chain must be considered and accounted for, and the calculus is detailed and complicated.

Then there are unique customer needs and requirements. The equipment and process must accommodate a variety of part families and hundreds of parts to increase runtime and efficiency. Operators must be able to change over part types and programming without calling in an automation specialist, and the entire process must be controlled from a central interface. Add to the mix that everything must be packaged in as small a footprint as possible, and the scope of the engineering challenge comes into focus.

UNISIG’s approach to solving these problems, however, results in targeted automation that enhances the existing benefits of gundrilling, ensuring a solid foundation for reliable processwide automation.

At its core, the automated UNE6-2i is a purposebuilt machine with automation embedded in its design, not added as an afterthought. Flexibility and adaptability are maximised by a harmonious, interdependent mechanical, software and operational planning scheme.

To meet size constraints, a 6-axis robot was embedded in the machine with a pallet system on the backside of the machine, allowing easy operator access from the front to setup the machine without compromising ergonomics. The configuration enables quick setup changes between prototype and proving operations and full production runs.

The robot automatically repositions the workpiece from the front of the first spindle into the rear of the second spindle without operator input. The process of drilling a part from both ends in a single-piece flow is unique to UNISIG. Workpieces with enlarged features on one side are loaded from the rear of the collet, solving a common problem in gundrilling medical surgical instruments with full automation.

Control of the UNE6-2i and a computer are consolidated into the Human Machine Interface (HMI), a menu-driven touch screen system for easy, intuitive operation. Training and operator engagement with the system is significantly reduced due to user-friendly UNISIG controller menus and prompts.

UNISIG’s comprehensive and integrated approach to automating medical part manufacturing is a vision that sets it apart in the industry. It’s more than drilling the impossible hole. It’s a commitment to understanding and to the research that drives continuous improvement and innovation for automated part production at its full potential.

Further information on all machines and the complete UNISIG machine programme is available at: www.unisig.com or follow the company on LinkedIn and Twitter (@UNISIG). You will also meet us at the EMO 2023 show in Hannover, Germany, from 18-23 September.

CheckedSafe launches licence checks service for commercial drivers

A brand new commercial driver's licence checking system has been launched by the UK’s leading compliance and fleet management system, CheckedSafe. Offering businesses a cost-effective, innovative and user-friendly solution for conducting licence checks.

As it stands, commercial drivers must have their licences regularly checked by their employers to ensure that they are legally allowed to drive. Recommendations from the DVSA suggest this should be carried out every three months at a minimum, although this should be more frequent for drivers with points on their licences. This process can be time-consuming and expensive for businesses, particularly those with a large fleet of vehicles.

The new licence-checking software from CheckedSafe successfully streamlines this process for businesses, offering a convenient, cost-effective and innovative method of ensuring fleet drivers are regulated and have a clean driving record. Using innovative Optical Character Recognition technology, with an accuracy rate of over 95%, CheckedSafe is able to check driver licences on behalf of businesses, ensuring that all drivers are fully qualified to drive.

Moreover, unlike traditional solutions for checking licences, fleet managers can use the new CheckedSafe software remotely, without the need to be physically present – a particularly beneficial solution for businesses with dispersed workforces.

For more information on the new services offered by CheckedSafe, please visit: www.checkedsafe.com or give them a call on 01282 908429.

Oil, Gas & Offshore

Cutting-edge subsea technology

Cumbria based Digital Edge Subsea is a world leader in offshore digital video recording (DVR) and inspection systems. The company supplies the oil and gas industry with its digital video recording system that includes diving, remote operated vehicle (ROV) and topside operations.Digital Edge Subsea’s products fit mainly into two categories, Subsea Robotics and Inspection Systems. The former includes both single and dual use modules as well as manipulators, which are high quality state of the art robotic solutions for the subsea market. Digital Edge Subsea is also a market leader in producing subsea inspection systems, and with 10 years’ experience in the industry has nurtured strong customer relationships allowing for honest customer feedback which has been incorporated into the development of the Version 5 EdgeDVR. The EdgeDVR has become an essential part of any ROV and Diving system offshore as it is easy to use and reliable. The new V5 software includes an online training platform and certification, as well as a powerful portable laptop version which comes in addition to the original 4U rackmounted version. To work alongside this, Digital Edge Subsea has also recently released the Edge DVR Archive application. Edge Archive handles the transfer of data from the internal DVR drives to client storage, either on a NAS, a Raid, or a phased delivery to multiple external hard drives. Archive can act as a simple data mirror of the correct internal drive data folders or can be used to create multiple simultaneous backups of client deliverables. This can be done in continuous backup or a phased approach that is conducted after each dive.

Humidity Control

A new temperature sensor is only a small part of the change that is needed in industrial temperature sensing. More advances are necessary to take advantage of the TCH’s (Thermocouple heater’s) space-saving design and in-line temperature sensing capabilities.

For example, Watlow’s Adaptive Thermal Systems® (ATS ) is an edge-to-edge thermal management suite that includes the TCH. While the harness that holds wiring for heaters and sensors is not always the first thing we think of when we think of innovation, the harness in ATS is worth highlighting. Featuring a standardised connector, the harness makes it easy to wire different heaters into the same system, and halves the number of connections required.

It’s important to stress that the right solution for an industrial temperature sensor system is never an ‘offthe-shelf’ solution. But the wrong custom solution can leave you with blind spots that create significant problems

within the application. TCH and ATS enhance each other’s value when combined. As a result, this provides incredible value without breaking the bank and forcing companies to compromise on features that can lead to detrimental issues down the line.

Spring manufacturers

“At European Springs & Pressings Ltd we are proud of the way we work with our clients to provide bespoke parts and solutions for their manufacturing processes, and have enjoyed building our profile at exhibitions and across print and social media outlets. At European Springs & Pressings Ltd we understand that the needs of our clients vary from job to job, therefore we endeavour to work with them to overcome all their manufacturing challenges. No two jobs are the same; similar products often require the use of different materials, treatments, variable tolerances or specific heat resistance. This is why we invest in the latest technology, qualified toolmakers and engineers to ensure that we design and produce the very best bespoke stampings, springs and wire forms,” stated Liam Bland, Marketing Manager.

European Springs & Pressings Ltd have the UK’s widest range of springs including compressions springs, tension springs, torsion springs and gas springs. Manufacturing out of its dynamic spring facility based in London, the company supports a vast range of customers in the automotive, telecommunications, aerospace and defence, hydraulics, domestic appliances, nuclear, electrical switch gear, lighting and controls, scientific medical and pharmaceutical industries.

For over 70 years, European Springs & Pressings Ltd have been at the forefront of industrial machinery manufacturing. It is this experience that has ensured its market leading position, offering the highest quality springs, technologies, customer service and technical expertise.

well during lockdown, adopting and adapting our work processes to maintain our business connections and continue to meet customer needs, it was brilliant to meet up and trade in person. UK manufacturing is going from strength to strength and we are very much benefitting from this when it comes to achieving budget. In business terms, the last 12 months have been healthy, as the industry has bounced back with force. Even with the ongoing issues involving material shortages and supply chains, there has been a noticeable hunger in manufacturing to reclaim lost ground and get manufacturing back on track.”

realise a range of prototype ideas, individually cut using precision lasers for R&D testing or put into full production. Our fully-equipped tool room can design and build any production tooling needed, assuring competitive pricing, consistent quality and dependable supply.”

The company has a dedicated team of reliable engineers that work with you to ensure the right product is chosen at the most economic price. After initial engagement, European Springs & Pressings Ltd will help design a product that is fit for function achieving all technical and quality requirements.

These aspects also take into account the repeatability of manufacture including tolerances, the product life, the ease of production assembly and the most economic method of manufacture.

“One thing we can offer our clients is the assurance that we understand their requirements and will deliver on our promises. Whereas stock suppliers and manufacturers with less capability might offer less than ideal options, or farm the order out to another company, our engineers work with the client to assess their needs and supply the solution that best suits them,” said Liam.

Amid the ever-changing industrial industry, investing both in its machinery and its people has and always will continue to be at the forefront of the company’s focus. Liam described some recent developments within the company, “Over the last year, we have bolstered our capability with the addition of a number of machines, including a Bruderer BSTA 410-110B2 high speed precision press which increases our production capability and a Bodor i5 laser cutter which has enabled us to improve on both our capability and capacity when laser cutting. We have also purchased a number of Wafios coilers and a further FMU 4 to strengthen our wire production.”

Of course, what is a company without its employees and European Springs and Pressings Ltd believe its staff is its greatest resource which is why it is currently looking to add to its ever-growing base of customer service experts and experienced engineers. “Whether we are employing experienced engineers looking for a new challenge or offering eager apprentices and trainees the chance to start their careers in manufacturing, we see ourselves as a career for life employer and are proud to offer a lifetime home for many workers, or a first step into the industry for others,” added Liam.

After facing certain restrictions and difficulties during COVID-19, Liam explained how over the past 12 months the company has begun to return back to normal. “Last summer we had just started getting back on the road again, as we were finally able to attend exhibitions and visit clients again. It felt great to finally be meeting our industry clients and colleagues again. Although we had adapted

As proud members of the Institute of Spring Technology and the Institute of Sheet Metal Engineering to which both support its registration with BSI to ISO9001, European Springs & Pressings Ltd is consistently developing new ways to innovate and adapt its product and service offering based on the needs of its customer and the demands of the industries to which it serves.

One noticeable service available is the company’s ability to offer a custom-tailored manufacturing process and in-house design service using CAD and CAM software and systems. Liam expanded, “This offering ensures that we can help our clients

Delivering a high-quality and consistent service, European Springs & Pressings Ltd’s products offer a solution that has been tried and tested for many years. However, there is still much more to come as Liam explained. “In the short to mid-term we are going to be investing a number of new Multislide machines to enhance our offering on the pressings/ stampings side of the business. Ongoing from this, we will continue our investment policy in plant personnel and equipment. We are also engaged in a joint programme with our sister group of companies in the UK to further extend our offering across heavy springs, gas springs and industrial furniture such as locks, latches, and slides.”
