Post & Logistics Company of the Month

Delivering the world

In this issue of Business and Industry Today, we are pleased to announce Jersey Post as our Post & Logistics Company of the Month.

Once part of the Royal Mail, Jersey Post broke away in 1969 and became incorporated in 2006. The business now operates a network of 19 post offices across Jersey and provides postal delivery services to all residential households and businesses six days a week. However, Jersey Post is not just the local postal authority for Jersey.

Over the years its services have extended across the island and beyond providing a range of international and domestic postal and logistics services to clients around the world such as bulk mailing, digital print and data management and other associated support services. “Our business model is similar to the Royal Mail when it comes to Jersey. We are the local supplier of mail and logistics for the island dealing with all inbound and outbound mail. Internationally, we have a Cross-Border Logistics arm which works with wholesalers and retailers around the world to deliver goods and services. Our superior offering is backed by a solid global network with system integration capabilities keeping you connected with your shipments each step of the way,” stated David McGrath, Group Marketing Director.

Jersey Post operates across four continents and in various sectors, from international logistics to digital communications. In fact, 40% of the group’s revenue comes from its overseas operations seeing established trading locations in the Channel Islands, Newark, Chicago, Hong Kong and the UK, which are set up to ultimately enable and support all clients’ own business development and growth. “We are a small but international company. We deliver a personable approach with every customer as well as competitive rates. Because we are small, we are able to onboard new customers very quickly and easily compared to some competitors as we don’t have as much bureaucracy in the way of bringing on new business. Our entire business model evolves

Test, Measurement & Monitoring

around putting the customer and their needs first,” added David.

One service worth noting is the company’s network of worldwide distribution routes and extensive portfolio of delivery services all accessible through a single point of contact to help businesses capitalise on Cross-Border eCommerce opportunities. With access to 190 postal administrations around the world, Jersey Post has an experienced team who will work with you to implement the perfect solution. Tracking key trends to keep up to date with evolving customer expectations, the ability to flex around your individual supply chain needs is really what sets them apart.

Moving forward, we asked David what the future holds for the company. He answered, “Combining the onboarding of our new Chief Executive, Mark Siviter, earlier this year with what we have been building on over the last five years, we are morphing into a 3PL Global Logistics business that focuses on Cross-Border eCommerce growth. So the future for us involves continuing to provide a great service at

the postal state while also building on our logistics capabilities.”

While Jersey Post continue to diversify and build on its capabilities, community will always remain at the heart of everything they do. The company prides itself on building long-lasting and personable relationships with its customers and clients. Whether it’s delivering a letter through a local post box or delivering goods across the world, Jersey Post has learnt to diversify in order to maintain its local services to the island which is so integral to the local community. “Post offices are an inherent part of our society. While we must make the right commercial decisions to ensure our long-term sustainability, those decisions must underpin our connection with the community,” stated David.

Instrumentation, Measurement, Data Acquisition & Test Systems

In this issue of Business and Industry Today, we are pleased to recognise GI Systems for its ongoing Commitment to Excellence in delivering industrial process instrumentation, test measurement and data acquisition to a range of key industry requirements and specifications.

Established in 2019, GI Systems Ltd’s team of experts bring 30 years of knowledge and experience gained in the process instrumentation market. “Our knowledge of customer needs and application requirements provide sales and business opportunities for GI Systems supplier companies, each of which have a high reputation for

excellence and innovation in test and measurement for their own product area. GI Systems Ltd is the UK representative of Gantner Instruments GmbH (Austria) and is also the UK representative of Manner Sensortelemetrie GmbH (Germany). Both of these are experts in producing solutions for challenging and demanding requirements often found in leading edge product development challenges,” stated Rob Stockham, Director.

GI Systems Ltd’s partner companies have decades of experience in each of the above specialities which positions the company to work closely with customers on an ‘engineer to engineer’ basis developing solutions for applications, rather than being classed as a ‘catalogue sales shop’.

We asked Rob, what three words best describe the company, he answered, “Firstly I would say measurement because we are familiar with most

physical parameters, signals, and processes, understanding the nature of the measurements and how best to handle them effectively. Secondly, integrity because we strive to provide robust and dependable technical solutions to meet customer needs, matched with fair and equitable business relationships to meet commercial obligations and expectations. And thirdly, value as we offer products and solutions at competitive pricing, building in quality of product performance to improve customer outcomes on investment and life cycle ownership.”

Currently GI Systems Ltd is deeply involved in the automotive sector, carrying out work for electric vehicle development and testing, with its capabilities also being utilised to stretch to both drive train and battery systems in test cells and ‘on vehicle’ testing for drive and half-shaft torque measurement telemetry. “We are also seeing great success in power plant conditioning monitoring using a wide range of flexible IO module architectures. These meet the needs of measuring vibration, stress, strain, temperature, pressure, motor, and electrical parameters to provide plant operators information,

dash boards and early warning of component failures. It also helps them plan for required maintenance ahead of unexpected failures that can cause plant shutdowns, loss of revenue and possible safety issues,” added Rob.

Continually broadening its network to reach a wider audience, GI Systems Ltd has recently entered partnership arrangements with some well-established systems integrator companies

and capabilities of GI Systems Ltd and will allow for further growth into their customer base,” said Rob.

As the company begins to find ways to manoeuvre towards other markets, industries, and its competitors, GI Systems Ltd is placing emphasis on increasing customer awareness for Gantner Instruments and Manner Sensortelemetrie, working for a similar success of both products and solutions here in the UK that has been replicated on a global level by these companies.

including Sella Controls Ltd of Stockport, Fluidic Ltd of Glasgow and another significant partner soon to be announced. “Each of these bring their own considerable experience and resources together to the industrial market segments that they service. Partnering with such companies extends the reach

In closing, we asked Rob what commitment to excellence means to GI Systems Ltd and how he feels the company achieve this. He answered, “As certified to ‘Cyber Essentials’, we always strive to make incremental improvements and use lessons learnt to ‘meet and beat’ customer expectations. In 2020 I was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Engineering Technology. I believe my contribution to the industry over a number of years, particularly with regard to promotion of furtherance of functional safety (eg. IEC 61508) adds great value to our service.”

Test, Measurement & Monitoring

The world leader in force measurement

Interface Force Measurement Solutions (Interface) is a UK company specialising in the supply and distribution of high-quality sensors and associated electronics and displays for a wide variety of industries. Working previously with clients such as

Airbus, BAE Systems, and Formula One Teams, we spoke with Tony Rokins, Business Development & Pressure Mapping Specialist, who explained some of the companies well known products.

“Our product portfolio is applicable to many industries. For instance, we are well known for our high-quality pressure mapping systems that are used by many of our automotive and motorsport customers. Our sensors deliver highly accurate, repeatable measurements and many of our load cells are used by calibration houses as calibration reference devices. Our high-quality, yet competitively priced 3 and 6 axis load cells are used for many R&D, renewable energy and robotic applications.”

Reflecting on last year, Interface has

faced much adversity from COVID-19. Fortunately, its sturdy business model and reliable service has enabled the company to pick up the pace and continue projects that were left postponed. “Trading conditions have been tough, but business levels picked up strongly towards the end of the year. I think we came out of it stronger than we could have reasonably expected.”

In terms of recent developments, Tony continued, “We’ve taken some time to review our business model, how we operate on a day-to-day basis. Being responsive to our customer’s needs and being able to offer a high-quality product with strong product knowledge at a competitive price with the best possible lead times is our number one priority.”

2021 also welcomed the launch of the G-Series Load Cells. The range comprises of miniature and small sensors for industrial applications, with capacities starting from just 4.5N Newton up to 200kN with metric threads. “These are high-performance devices but aimed at more cost-conscious applications. This is a new market for us, but we are seeing increasing interest. We have launched an e-commerce website at: store. interfaceforce.co.uk –

competitive pricing and availability from stock will be key to this new venture’s success,” stated Tony.

In the future, Interface is keen to continue its growth trajectory for 2022. We asked Tony how he felt receiving the award and what their plans are going forward, he answered, “We work hard for our customers to offer the best measurement solutions. The recognition is greatly appreciated. Long term, we are strengthening our position with our customers in our more traditional markets of aerospace, automotive, motorsport, Universities and alternative energy research.

“We are also working on new, wireless force and vibration sensors for remote monitoring in systems such as luggage carousels. One more area we are pushing for growth is with XSensor’s pressure mapping systems, particularly in the Hispeed systems designed for high-speed impact or crash testing and tire foot-print research. These systems are capable of capturing data up to 2,500 frames per second. The tire sensor can be driven over at speeds of up to 140kph. I believe this is a unique capability we can bring to the industry.”

TryHackMe launches unique hands-on Red Teaming security training

Global cyber security platform TryHackMe has launched unique training that allows users to emulate a potential adversary attack.

The London-based company bases its new ‘Red Teaming’ interactive lessons on real-world scenarios, to help businesses expose vulnerabilities across their networks and systems.

Its gamified sessions are aimed at individuals who want to achieve high-level jobs in the security industry, alongside businesses looking to upskill their staff.

TryHackMe’s Red Team Month, is designed to get employees to think like a cyber attacker in a bid to expose flaws in their company, which ultimately allows them to mitigate risk.

Over 48 hours of hands-on training and assessments, those taking part learn how to challenge defence capability by imitating a cyber criminal’s actions, emulate malicious attacks, retain access and avoid detection.

Disruptive digital waves driving high-tech companies to stay on top of industry trends

Latest research from Cambashi indicates that disruptive digital waves of technological and economic change are causing high-tech companies to reinvent themselves and their products, business models and processes.

More than ever, says the research, for those engaged in the high-tech space, the pace of change means they will need deeper industry insights, underpinned by industry training, to enable them to not only understand the challenges, but also maximise their opportunities.

The high-tech supply chain is a complex and interconnected global network of component suppliers, OEMs, and contract firms, who often produce both consumer and industrial products. Cambashi’s research looks at:

● The global manufacturing of electronic components and boards across five key countries

● Investment and employment trends in the industry by country

● Investment and employment trends and pressures on the global supply chain, particularly the drive to plug shortages in semiconductor supply

Although the industry tiers and connections are similar to other major manufacturing sectors, such as aerospace and automotive, the key role of the ongoing development of semiconductor technologies adds an additional level of dependency. The auto industry is just one sector where the supply chain has come under strain due to chip shortages, says the research.

Christie & Co analyses

UK pharmacy market

Specialist business property adviser, Christie & Co, has recently launched its Pharmacy Market Review 2022 report, which analyses key trends in the pharmacy sector in 2021 and the first half of 2022; reviewing market composition, operational activity, employment challenges, key dispensing and services activity, online pharmacy platforms, and sector funding. It also includes publicly available data and proprietary data from key business intermediaries, including Locate a Locum.

Christie & Co reported positive market activity, with prices bouncing back from an almost static level in 2020 to a 4.3% increase in 2021, a trajectory that has continued in 2022 across all market areas.

Following Freedom of Information Requests sourced by Christie & Co, the General Pharmaceutical Council confirmed that 360 pharmacies were removed from the register over the course of the 12 months to March 2022. NHS Business Services Authority recorded 557 pharmacy ownership changes in the same period, although this will have included administrative

changes, and will not solely be due to pharmacy sales.

The composition of the sector has remained broadly the same as previous years, albeit with a circa 2% reduction in contracts owned and operated by corporate or supermarket operators. As of 31 March 2022, there were 14,370 registered pharmacy premises across the UK; 3,560 of which are independently operated and 5,653 are under corporate and supermarket ownership. 1,298 of these are in Scotland, 526 in Northern Ireland, 730 in Wales, and 11,816 in England.

Tennant UK: Reinventing how the world cleans

customers to find the best possible solution to their particular situation.

Tennant UK has launched a number of new machines in 2022 including the new range of Scrubber Dryers (the T191, T291, T391 walk-behinds and the T581, T681 and T981 Ride-on models), but the most impressive cleaning machine is currently the T16AMR, the world’s first Industrial robotic scrubber dryer.

customers, from end users within the industrial, manufacturing and aggregate sectors, to commercial cleaning companies, supermarkets, retail stores and the hospitality sector because of the diverse range of cleaning machines they can supply.

In this issue of Business and Industry Today, we are pleased to announce Tennant as our Industrial Cleaning Company of the Month.

Tennant Company was founded in 1870 by George H Tennant in northeast Minneapolis, USA. Over the years the company has grown into one of the most recognised manufacturers of professional and industrial cleaning machines on a global scale, and more recently, in 2017, Tennant acquired the IPC Group, Europe’s 3rd largest manufacturer of cleaning machines, which included Vaclensa in the UK.

Designed for industrial environments such as warehouses, distribution centres, production factories and waste and recycling plants, the T16AMR features an impressive 190 litre solution tank, and an even bigger 225 litre recovery tank. It also has a 910mm cleaning path and reduces the need for pre-sweeping allowing employees and cleaning operatives to focus on other tasks and let the T16AMR get on with the cleaning.

As a scrubber dryer the T16AMR also comes with ec-H2O NanoClean™ Technology and customers can use the integrated reporting software to monitor and review cleaning performance with daily or weekly reports. Further information about all of these products is available on the company website, and customers can watch official product videos, as well as on-site demonstrations and shorts on the Youtube channel too.

One of the major attributes Tennant has over its competitors is the sheer robustness and reliability of the larger models. The company recently published a case study with long-term customer, Penygroes Concrete Products Ltd, who originally purchased a Tennant 95 Sweeper in March 1991 and continually used it to clean their 4 acre site for 30 years.

Tennant Sweepers include multi-stage filtration systems, and many products also allow for an optional HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filtration system to be included, and this has long been considered the gold standard for air purification by those focused on indoor air quality.

While Tennant is a global organisation, in the UK it operates from two main locations – the head office and showroom in Northampton, and its Northern office and warehouse facility in Bolton, Lancashire, and the main service of the company is to design, manufacture, supply and service outstanding cleaning machines and it is able to boast an offering of cleaning machines in every category.

Tennant offers free site surveys to all customers, to ensure that it has a complete understanding of their space, facility and cleaning agenda. The company also provides free, no-obligation on-site machine demonstrations at a time and location that best suits the customer, allowing their teams to try the cleaning machines for themselves and see first-hand how they function within their own working facility. Tennant cleaning machines are available for purchase and to rent, and Tennant aims to work directly with all

UK Marketing Manager, Daniel Cross (pictured right), commented, “Tennant works with any customers that require professional cleaning machines and want the best possible service from a company. We are a true One-Stop Shop and can supply cleaning machines in every category, and the industrial range of Sweepers, Scrubber Dryers and Vacuums are ideal for working production facilities within the manufacturing and aggregate sector.”

The company also manufactures innovative and more compact cleaning machines which are currently used across the country within retail environments, supermarkets, shopping centres and offices. Tennant works directly with a range of

In June 2021 they returned to Tennant to purchase a new cleaning machine, and when asked why they chose Tennant they answered, “We have had a Tennant on site for over 30 years so the proof is there to see every day.”

Daniel continued, “We are committed to ensuring that the needs of our customers are not just met but exceeded, and as stated before we do this by offering a one stop shop solution for cleaning machines, with a heavy focus on innovation and sustainability.”

Tennant is aware that this is a crowded marketplace and works hard to stay at the forefront of the industry, thanks to a large product range, and innovative products. A key USP for the Scrubber Dryer range is the aforementioned ec-H2O NanoClean Technology, a system that electrically converts water into an innovative and sustainable cleaning solution.

By using ec-H2O NanoClean™ Technology, customers can clean effectively, save money and reduce their environmental impact compared to daily floorcleaning using chemicals. This converted water is created by an on-board e-cell that generates millions of microscopic bubbles — nanobubbles –per millilitre of solution. These nanobubbles then enhance the cleaning efficiency of the Tennant Scrubber Dryer.

HEPA filters are pleated mechanical air filters that have the ability to remove 99.97% of dust, pollen, mould, bacteria and other airborne particles that are 0.3 microns in diameter, and can also capture nanoparticles.

Daniel remarked, “All of our walkbehind and ride-on Sweepers are designed with exceptional filtration systems, in order to raise the level of health and safety within a working facility and ensure a better result of indoor air quality.”

Tennant also has one of the UK’s largest directlyemployed team of engineers and technicians, working with customers across the whole of the UK. This reflects the high-level of training and service expertise customers can expect from Tennant, since the company does not rely on outside agency staff who may not fully understand the workings of a Tennant cleaning machine.

Daniel concluded, “It is safe to say that we never stop planning for the future. Alongside planned new product innovations, we are presently working on streamlining our supply lines by moving the manufacture of our largest sweeper (the S30 Ride-on) from Minneapolis USA to Uden in The Netherlands which will significantly reduce build and delivery times.”

A new gas process heating system from Lanemark Combustion Engineering is now fully operational in London at a leading micro-brewery, Villages Brewery, with particular gains noted in terms of operational efficiency.

“We have installed and commissioned a liquid heating TX 25E burner package on a brewing kettle supplied by Bespoke Brewing Solutions, with whom we liaised closely throughout the project,” says Lanemark’s Process Burner Sales Manager, Adrian Cadman. “This provides a capacity of 30hl or 18 UK barrels – and is now central to Villages Brewery’s production.”

The burner is installed on the external wall of the circular vessel, firing through the structure into a submerged 2½” nb. stainless steel tubular heat exchanger, which takes the form of a helical coil, located at the base of the tank in order to deliver the optimum blend of maximum heat transfer and minimum intrusion into the available space.

Benefitting from Lanemark’s own TxCalc specification software, efficiencies in excess of 80% are readily achieved. This is further enhanced by low exhaust temperatures of typically 180°C, which is markedly lower than alternative systems where up to 300°C, reducing efficiency to just 50%, can be noted.

Archie Village, Director at Deptford-based Villages Brewery – which distributes to a wide range of pubs and bottle shops throughout the capital – highlights the role played by the new installation.

“The overall aim of the project has been to facilitate an increase in production output while building on the high quality that is at the heart of our reputation – and the Lanemark system is already delivering in both respects,” he says.

Industrial Additive Fusion Technology for continuous fibre composite parts

9T Labs was established in January 2018 in Zürich, Switzerland, by its three co-founders Martin Eichenhofer, Chester Houwink, and Giovanni Cavolina. The company has grown into a large team of pioneers that are passionate about manufacturing solutions that leverage the latest developments in automation technology, software and materials to make performance parts easily accessible.

9T Labs aspires to mass-produce high-performance composites as easily as metals. This is done by automating and digitising the production workflow of composite production at the most innovative companies. The company sets out to provide an all-in-one solution to help its customers radically ramp up their composites series production and turn their series production ideas into production cases within months – not years.

9T Labs built a software as a service suite, powered by integrated FEA simulation tools, that quickly comes up with highly optimised designs. Then it combines additive manufacturing with advanced post processing technology to enable serial manufacturing of structural composite parts. With this unique software clients are able to design the fibre path in any way imaginable.

9T Labs also announced the closing of a $17 million Series A funding round, that will be harnessed to support the commercialisation of the Red Series Additive Fusion Solution as well as to expand internationally. Stratasys and Solvay Ventures are among the key investors, with contributions also coming from Verve Ventures, ACE & Company, Zürcher Kantonalbank and Wingman Ventures.

Head of Marketing & Business Development, Yannick Willemin, commented, “The Red Series solution received the Red Dot Design Award in its category, and we have hired new and very talented people onto our team to develop this work, meaning that we now have over 60 employees.”

The Red Dot Award has aimed to appraise diversity in the field of design for more than 60 years, from businesses that distinguish their activities through appealing and conceptual ideas

The Red Series is a standout in aesthetic design, while delivering prolific innovation for advanced composites in the field of additive manufacturing (AM). It is able to create continuous fibre-reinforced polymer components that weigh up to 80% less than traditional metal parts while increasing product strength significantly. These benefits are delivered while being cost competitive vs. metal benchmark parts and generating very low waste.

The Red Series Additive Fusion Technology, includes a design software, a build module (3D printer), and a Fusion Module (compression moulding machine). This offers a simple and cost-effective way to design and manufacture functional composites.

Clients can design even their most advanced parts with help of 9T Labs Fibrify® software, which enables the user to quickly define the fibre designs and fully optimise them by directly exporting the composite parts to commercially available FEA simulation packages for verification of their structural ability. This means that for the first time, true 3D fibre orientation allows the client to design applications which have not been possible to

Why heater design is key in the abatement of waste gases

To overcome the challenges of waste gases, a compact, no-leak heater design can ensure the reliability of exhaust abatement systems in semiconductor fabrication. For instance, Watlow’s FLUENT® in-line heater is designed to allow movement of a fluid or gas over the heater surface without any loss of the fluid or gas through the outer shell.

A no-leak design not only includes a seamless stainless steel outer protection tube, but it also has the heating elements sitting outside of the fluid flow path. As a result, neither the elements nor the wiring penetrate the gas flow path, mitigating the need to weld components in place and thereby create areas where gas can escape. This design ensures that all nitrogen gas is passed along into the process, preventing any from escaping into the sub-fab.

With no leaks present, the correct mixture of gases can be assured, meaning that semiconductor manufacturers no longer need to trade-off between safety concerns and possible downtime caused by the need to flush clogged exhaust systems.

A first step in the abatement of waste gases in semiconductor fabrication should be dilution with nitrogen gas. However, engineers must consider the issues that can arise and consider opting for a solution that covers all potential issues associated with nitrogen heating. In this case, a design that is modelled around eliminating leakage can prevent clogging and downtime.

manufacture in composites before.

The company obviously found going to market with so many new innovations – software, hardware, materials – an interesting but exciting challenge! Yannick continued, “As a startup, we set ourselves ambitious goals and certainly learned crucial lessons, which have allowed us to challenge and optimise our processes. By implementing these learnings in an efficient manner with a team of talented people, we are on a good path but certainly have the motivation to go for more.”

As part of the upscaling process, 9T Labs have appointed a dedicated person for HR and for finances to its leadership team, and it also implemented foundations for the organisation to scale with functional groups, and adapted management structures, and proper processes to ensure the sustainability and consistency of the business.

Two months ago, 9T Labs opened a new office in Boston, USA, and this first American office will allow the country’s latest minds and innovators in structural composites the opportunity to learn about and experience the Swiss company’s unique advancements in composite additive manufacturing. The first US team members will be signed in the coming weeks, with the following employees travelling to Zurich, Switzerland to train with the technology at 9T Labs’ headquarters.

Electrifying refuse collection vehicle hire

Vehicle and workshop provider Specialist Fleet Services Ltd (SFS) and its vehicle hire division CTS Hire, are enabling organisations across the UK to connect with the latest electric refuse vehicle technology. Contract hire – a sustainable solution for electric refuse vehicles SFS was the first contract hire company to install a fleet of Dennis Eagle eCollect electric refuse trucks in the UK for its customer Exeter City Council. The three new 26t electric refuse vehicles were delivered to the council in June and will ultimately be powered by Water Lane Solar Park, making them zero emissions.

Bob Sweetland, Managing Director, SFS, said, “We are proud to be the first contract hire company to install eCollect RCVs in the UK and we are confident that the benefits of the fleet will be appreciated by both crews and residents and provides an excellent realworld example to other local authorities of what is now possible and how it can be achieved. Until now most operators have only been able to access electric RCV technology through outright purchase, but at a cost of £400-£500k, more than double the cost of a traditional diesel RCV, this is beyond the budgetary reach of many organisations. Contract hire enables customers to implement new electric vehicle technology without this risk. We also take all the responsibility for maintaining the vehicles and disposing of them or replacing them when they reach end of life. The operator has budget certainty and can focus on highlighting decarbonisation benefits of eRCV adoption.”

SFS is also investing significant time and resources into making sure its customers are fully prepared and supported for the transition to electric as it recognises that successful adoption is not just all about the vehicle. Support and guidance is needed to overcome broader challenges such as charging infrastructure, staff training and the adaptation of workshops.

Try before you buy

CTS Hire has joined forces with RH Commercial Vehicles (RHCV) to add two brand new all-electric Renault Trucks 26t Refuse Collection vehicles (RCVs) to its rental fleet. This milestone marks the first time that operators can access new electric refuse vehicle technology on short term hire enabling them to ‘try before they buy’.

Bob adds, “We are delighted to be able to offer our customers the opportunity to hire the latest electric refuse vehicle technology. Although some organisations have been able to trial demonstration eRCVs for a week or two, this isn’t always enough time to make a proper evaluation. By adding these vehicles to our hire fleet, we are giving fleet operators the opportunity to carry out a thorough appraisal of the technology over a few months or more.”

CTS Hire offers a wide range of high quality, FORS, LEZ and DVS compliant hire vehicles featuring the latest technological and safety enhancements & supported by a 24/7 national mobile engineer & workshop network. Quantitative

optical gas imaging is the ability to utilise optical gas imaging – specifically, cooled hydrocarbon OGI – combined with an algorithmic solution, to quantify gas leaks invisible to the naked eye.

These are leaks you’d normally be able to visualise on your OGI camera. Historically, OGI cameras have been limited to qualitative analysis – indicating that a leak is occurring but giving little indication how much is leaking. Now, though, combining an existing OGI camera with a qOGI solution, you can visualise and quantify such leaks in units of mass and volumetric leak rates, as well as concentration over pathlength (ppm-m).

What are the minimum and maximum size leaks that can be successfully quantified with the FLIR QL320? The minimum size of a leak that can be quantified is a function of the ∆T (between ambient temperature near the gas and the background), the compound you are imaging, and the wind speed. FLIR’s QL320 system has demonstrated the ability to quantify propane leaks down to 100 scc/min and methane leaks down to 300 scc/min with a ∆T of 5°C and a moderate wind speed. A good general rule: if you can see the leak in normal mode, the system most likely can quantify it. Contact kelly.hosten@teledyneflir.com www.flir.co.uk

Recycling & Waste Management

TANA From Waste to Value®

Ever since 1971, Tana has been at the forefront of designing and manufacturing robust machinery for the purposes of solid waste management. With a wealth of decades of experience on the needs and requirements of landfill and waste management operators, in the early 2000s Tana expanded its machine selection with the TANA Shark mobile shredders.

Based in Bentley, Doncaster, Tana Recycling Machinery (UK) Limited is the sole UK distributor for all Tana products. Tana (UK) Ltd was established in May 2016 and has been the forefront of delivering unmatched versatility to the UK recycling industry.

Tana’s main role is to provide the sales, service, and maintenance for its Recycling Machinery, and the company has an array of machinery from slow speed Shredders, Landfill compactors, Trommels and Disc screens. Tana has the responsibility to make sure that all their customer’s machines are always well-serviced and maintained, ensuring that there is little to no downtime for the companies that operate them.

Sales & Marketing Manager, Brooklyn Walker, commented, “The company slogan TANA From Waste to Value® is a symbol of Tana’s devotion to not only produce machinery that is unique in terms of its design and features, but also to provide our customers with solutions and services for improved productivity. Our mission

is to improve our customers’ businesses and enable them to increase their revenue – from waste to value.”

Tana’s target customer base is primarily focused across the waste management industry, including Skip Hire yards, recycling centres, landfills and any other department that is in need of its services.

Working so closely with all customers gives the company the opportunity to listen to their feedback regarding the machinery, to make constant improvements to all products.

The past 12 months have been a period of development for Tana, and the company has evolved in numerous ways by way of constant innovation and staying at the forefront of the ever-changing waste industry. In the past year Tana has rolled out two new and updated machines, in the form of the New TANA Shark Shredder and the updated H series Landfill Compactor.

The TANA Shark Shredder is a mobile and extremely versatile waste shredder, suitable for both pre-shredding as well as shredding of industrial waste, demolition waste, tyres, mattresses and green waste, and it can be adapted to any desired piece size. For the best job, the TANA Shark 440DT Eco is capable of producing high torque with the best cutting power, and Tana recommends this model as it is the best multi-purpose shredder available, and is capable of tackling anything that is required of it.

Due to the unique design of the machine, the

material is reduced by cutting, therefore the machine consumes less fuel, which benefits the user. In addition, the TANA shredders are equipped with an intelligent control system with different programmes to choose from, depending on the material to be shredded.

Tana is also the first brand to devise a waste compactor specially built for the landfill market. The new TANA H-series is the result of long-term product development and proven solutions that offer excellent user benefits, and the compactors are equipped with unique features that set them apart from other compactors on the market.

The rigid frame provides optimum crushing force, so the TANA compactor is built around a rigid articulated frame which allows a crushing force of up to 100% on a single barrel drum compared to a four-wheel oscillating vehicle of similar weight. This guarantees a 10% better compaction rate and fewer passes.

Tana is aware that it is operating in a congested industry, but its biggest outstanding attribute is its versatility. Brooklyn continued, “With our shredder’s ability to shred the widest variety of material on the market, we can achieve an endproduct size which varies from a pre-shred down to 50mm. The end-product size can be changed in 10 minutes due to our unique screens that are easy to remove and replace.”

Tana continues to look to the future in all aspects of its work, and recently exhibited at the RWM Letsrecycle Live Show at Birmingham’s NEC. The show gave the company the chance to interact with new and existing customers, as well as other experts in the field. Tana’s customers operate in countless different areas of the waste

management industry and treat a wide range of waste types and streams using a variety of processes. Tana’s job is to help them do that as easily, cost-effectively and ecologically as possible.

Due to the popularity of the Shark Shredder at the RWM Letsrecycle Live event, over the coming months Tana will be continuing with more demonstrations run across the UK, in addition to delivering more machinery to new and returning customers.

Also Tana’s sister company in Finland has been working hard on further development to existing and new machines. Being part of an industry with ever-changing goal posts, the company works hard to keep up with these ever-changing demands, and it will be unveiling exciting developments throughout 2023.

Tana UK understands the value and importance of having reliable equipment on your site, so working alongside the Tana brand, it aims to help maximise all of its customer’s investments.

Brooklyn concluded, “With our sector ever developing, it is important for us to stay dynamic in our goal of providing the very best machinery for solid waste management. Even though the sector is always under the stress of change, we have become experts at rolling with the punches, and I believe that we will continue to strive regardless of what new laws may limit the industry and I can see an ever-increasing need for Tana’s products and services.”

Sustainable repair solutions

As a long-standing manufacturer and supplier to the utilities industry, MW Polymers have provided a range of sustainable repair solutions as alternatives to more costly pipe replacement to the UK’s gas distribution network for over 45 years.

Today we continuously work with our customers looking at ways of supporting their long-term sustainability goals, aligning our approach to theirs, whether that be looking at innovative ways to reduce packaging, reviewing logistics to gain efficiencies through reduced carbon emissions, or testing our products for use on the gas networks of tomorrow, which will operate under hydrogen conditions.

Stock Rentals

Since its first exhibition at Utility Week Live 2022, Stock Rentals has been busy fulfilling orders for its 3.5 ton Stock Mini-Vacs and 18 ton Stock MidiVacs.

Hydro Vacuum Excavation is fast becoming recognised as the safest form of excavation in the UK, used in a range of applications, small streets are not a problem for this narrow access machine. Designed with practical planning and operational savings in mind, the excavation is completed within minutes and the spoil is tipped into ton bags and left neatly on the street for later collection, vastly improving productivity.

Zero Service Strikes is the aim, changing the method is the solution. Avoiding the use of hand tools or conventional excavators is essential to achieving this. Using water to safely dislodge the soil and removing it by suction into the body of the vehicle, revealing buried services or tree roots below, the Hydro Vacuum Excavator is proving to be best practice, the way forward in saving time, sustaining the environment and saving lives.

Stock Rentals offers the perfect solution, Contract Hire or temporary trial periods, making safe excavation affordable to all.

Market leaders Advance Welding has had the new Efuze product on the drawing board for a number of years but as battery technology and the efficiency of lithium ion has taken over in cars and most forms of transport the power has now transformed the products in this sector too. Efuze represents a more flexible, greener and simple way to join pipework. The new units are now selling in numerous export markets as well as in the UK and will be adopted soon by the

contractors using the old petrol generator systems.

The one man operated Efuze units are easy to transport to site and will weld up to 200 joints (depending on size).

They have built in GPS location software called ‘Locate’. All this

is run from a phone application with a simple interface and backed up by an online portal for storage. The Efuze is available now to purchase from UK distributors.

EnviroChemie: Technology for water

EnviroChemie was founded in 1976 and is headquartered in Rossdorf, Germany. The company is represented at 16 global locations with over 900 employees, and for over 45 years, its solutions have been ensuring efficiency and operational safety worldwide. The company works with over 30,000 customers in 60 countries, and experienced and highly qualified experts provide plant solutions and services that bear the hallmarks of quality, innovative brands and ground-breaking technologies.

Based in Bracknell, Berkshire, EnviroChemie

UK Ltd opened in March 2018, and primarily operates to deliver technical water and wastewater treatment solutions to Industrial customers, in a way that conserves resources, complies with all industry regulations and achieves sustainability goals. The UK business is currently in the middle of a very busy time as it works on delivering several high-profile projects as well as winning new work and developing the process support and after sales side of the business.

The company is continuously enhancing its processes and developing water chemicals in its own laboratories. EnviroChemie regularly acts as a partner in national and international research projects to develop forward-looking technologies, and it offers sustainable and efficient solutions, plants and services in order to overcome the challenges in water and wastewater treatment and to protect and preserve the environment and water resources for future generations.

The ability to design bespoke solutions to the customers exact specification enables EnviroChemie to deliver the right solutions every time at a competitive price, ensuring compliance and sustainability throughout.

Recently a constructor of large-scale plants in Germany has commissioned EnviroChemie with providing water treatment for the operation of a PEM (protonexchange membrane) electrolyser in order to generate green hydrogen.

The electrolyser will be situated in Germany and is to generate more than 40,000 standard cubic metres of green hydrogen per hour. Based on the principle of ion exchange, the water treatment plant can treat more than 1,000 cubic metres of pure water an hour, and EnviroChemie is to build the water treatment plant (polishing system) and put it into operation together with the customer.

The ion exchange water treatment plant will maintain the quality of the water circulated in the PEM electrolyser. The company was awarded this contract because its water experts are able to meet the demanding requirements of the project in the area of ultrapure and process water treatment.

In addition to the continuous development of its processes and products, EnviroChemie regularly participates in German and European collaborative research projects. In internal research projects, it specifically examines key areas that it regularly redefines based on current developments, as well as issues that arise as a result of the needs of all customers.

The legal requirements for wastewater discharge change, and so do the needs of customers in industry and commerce in relation

to the water quality grades used in production. For example, companies are increasingly looking for ways to recycle or reuse water, and as a result, there is growing demand for technologies that are energyefficient and conserve resources. What is more, global challenges, such as limited water reserves and climate change, demand new future-focused technologies.

As more companies are looking for new ways to recycle or reuse water, EnviroChemie is constantly

working towards developing new energyefficient technology and conserve resources.

As the environment is constantly changing, it is vital EnviroChemie is

alert to all current and future challenges and always remains one step ahead of the legal requirements for wastewater. Its experienced and highly qualified team of experts are continually working to enhance processes and develop new water chemicals in their own laboratories that bear the hallmarks of quality, innovation and industry leading solutions.

UK drainage and wastewater solutions providers

companies, tens of thousands of businesses and millions of people. Over the years, those services have been delivered by many thousands of dedicated and highly professional people, including our current teams.”

In 2020, the company launched its latest business venture, setting up Lanes Infrastructure to deliver excavation and ducting installation services for the broadband industry. The Lanes-i launch has been a big success, with the business building a rapidly growing portfolio of contracts, aided by an innovative business model that combines digital operational systems with industry-leading safety and quality standards.

Lanes has four divisions:

t A network of 22 commercial and domestic drainage services depots

t A sewer lining and rehabilitation division primarily focused on delivering industryleading sewer, culvert and industrial pipe lining services

It was the first 1,800mm UV liner installed by Lanes and the first to be supplied in the UK by its German manufacturer, IMPREG. To provide the 100 year design life required, the IMPREG GL15 liner had to be 15.5mm thick, contributing to its 9.5 tonne weight.

In this issue of Sustainability Today, we have selected Lanes Group plc as the recipient of our Industry Excellence Award.

Lanes Group began life in 1992 as Lanes for Drains, a Leeds-based drain cleaning and repair specialist employing just five people. Today, with more than 2,200 staff, Lanes is the UK’s largest independent drainage and wastewater service specialist with specialist operating divisions and group companies working across the UK and Ireland.

Lanes operates hundreds of the specialist vehicles that can clean sewers and suck up waste for safe disposal. The company operates 36 depots and service hubs, including a national lining centre, a national survey processing centre, and two rail maintenance hubs. The head office is in Leeds, with other HQ functions in Eccles, Greater Manchester.

Highly professional

Richard Leigh, Lanes Group Development Director, said, “We’re proud of what Lanes has achieved over the last three decades, delivering drainage services on behalf of many water

t A rail division, delivering services to Transport for London’s underground network, Network Rail and the Elizabeth Line, including facilities management services, such as vegetation clearance, bridge cleaning and painting, structure repair, lock maintenance, and tunnel seepage control

t A wastewater services division providing services for the UK’s water companies Services include drainage maintenance, repair and rehabilitation, tinkering, CCTV drainage surveying, waste disposal and management, plus environmental drainage and planning.

Biggest ever liner

Lanes has expertise and experience across all key commercial and industrial sectors, including water utilities, rail, highways, commercial, and domestic, and is Thames Water’s sole wastewater network services maintenance partner. The company also has contracts to deliver services for other water companies, including Severn Trent, Scottish Water, Yorkshire Water, Southern Water, and Northumbrian Water.

The rail division operates contracts for Transport for London, including drainage, asset refurbishment, and facilities maintenance. It also works, alongside sister company UKDN Rail, for Network Rail, Crossrail and HS2, and is the main contractor providing drainage survey services for the Transpennine Route Upgrade rail project.

In a recent development, Lanes has installed its biggest ever pipe liner during this summer’s heatwave. The ultraviolet light cured in place pipe (CIPP) liner was 1,800mm in diameter, tall enough for a man of average height to walk along without having to stoop.

Importantly, Lanes selected a new type of liner that can be more easily controlled in hot weather, which gave its lining team greater flexibility in carrying out its installation.

Lanes installed the 42 metre-long liner in a storm drain in Corby, Northamptonshire, to prepare it to be adopted into the public sewer system. It had been developed for use in countries with hot climates. Lanes has shown that, thanks to climate change, it is likely to be used increasingly in the UK as well.

Fighting fatbergs

Lanes is also the founder of Unblocktober, the first international campaign to protect sewers from misuse and so protect waterways & oceans from pollution, including plastic pollution.

Unblocktober is a pioneering month-long annual campaign, launched in 2019, that takes place in October to improve the health of our drains, sewers, watercourses and seas – driven completely by the British public. The campaign encourages individuals and businesses to take the Unblocktober pledge, which means committing to keeping potentially damaging waste products away from their drains for the whole month.

Jacob Larkin, spokesperson for Unblocktober, commented, “With the climate crisis looming, as well as the loss of many of our green spaces, we wanted this year’s Unblocktober to focus on the climatic and ecological costs of poor drain health. The campaign focus is on how right now

is a ‘Time for Action’, to make a true difference on the ecological and climatic impact of poor drain health, and now is the time to make a real difference and utilise our drainage systems in a way that will benefit the environment.”

Sustainable service

As an industry leader, Lanes is able to bring to bear teams of any size, with all relevant expertise, and the very latest specialist drainage vehicles and equipment to tackle the most challenging drainage and wastewater projects in the UK.

The company has the largest fleet of recycler jet vac tankers. These very sustainable vehicles can suck up liquid and sludge waste and filter out the water so it can be used again and again. This saves water and energy and is around 62% more productive than standard jet vac tankers, because the vehicles can stay on station working for longer before having to leave to dispose of waste and refill water tanks.

Lanes also demonstrates the ability to deliver uniformly high standards of service for national and international companies anywhere in the UK, and it offers very effective key account support to ensure these services are delivered on time, safely and to a high standard.

Safety excellence

As well as having one of the largest fleet of specialist drainage vehicles, Lanes retains the best trained drainage engineers, and has unrivalled experience at solving the biggest drainage and wastewater services challenges. It is also the holder of the RoSPA Gold Achievement Award, one of the UK’s highest health and safety accolades.

Lanes was very pleased to receive the Industry Excellence Award. Richard Leigh said, “It is recognition for the excellent work done by our teams up and down the country, and the value they deliver to millions of people by maintaining public sewer systems and to thousands of businesses by cleaning, repairing and renovating their drain and industrial pipe systems.”

Industry Excellence

Industry Excellence

RSG Structures provides sustainable excellence across the industry

In this issue of Sustainability Today, we have selected RSG Structures as the recipient of our Industry Excellence Award.

RSG Structures was established in March 2009 by Ray Davies, Russell Mees, Stephen Bambridge and Gareth Neale, (hence RSG) who had spent many years working together for a different company. When that company was bought out by a larger corporate, they decided to set up alone by using the skills and experience that they had gained in the industry.

RSG Structures have a wide and varied portfolio and can cater for all construction needs and customers benefit from the extensive experience and knowledge available from the company. Having been in the construction industry for so many years now, RSG is well equipped to assist in everything from supply, design and groundworks to full construction projects.

The bespoke tailored approach ensures that all of its clients receive the highest level of customer service, along with the highest quality products. RSG uses a network of trusted, quality-focused suppliers in order to meet the design, programme and budget requirements of every project and client.

Having no actual factory facility means that RSG Structures can offer so much more to clients, it is able to buy the materials required from anywhere and send it straight on to the customer. This way RSG has found that it can subcontract to the best companies who can provide the best materials at the best cost for its clients.

In recent years, RSG Structures has focused its work onto the core market of waste and recycling. Gareth told us, “When we first set up in 2009, we were going to focus on Anaerobic Digestion, as this was a growth industry at that time and in those early days we did work with companies in that sector and we provided materials for them. However we found this a bit limiting and wanted to look at other ways of working.”

Around ten years ago, Ray and Russell moved on from RSG, but Stephen and Gareth have

continued to build up the business and enjoy accepting and developing challenging projects.

The company was recently commissioned by Hanson Aggregates to design, supply and construct walls for new RAP (Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement) de-watering bays at its Tytherington depot. The RAP material needs heating to allow it to be re-used and if the moisture content is high this will take a lot of heat (and therefore energy) to do. By dewatering, Hanson is able to take more moisture out which means less heat is required and so less energy is used for the process to take place.

RSG took the initial concept and designed foundations and walls suitable to take RAP material stored to a height of 2.4m, while allowing a dewatering ‘pit’ to be formed within the bays below ground. A number of designs were looked at, but the best in terms of cost, ease and speed of construction was an in-situ plinth/ foundation with Elite Precast Legato blocks sitting over with a soldier course on the external walls and a spreader block on the division wall. Retractable roofs then sit on top which can be moved back to allow dump trucks and loading shovels to operate in the bays without the need for high roof structures.

To support the work with the Legato blocks

and the waste and recycling industry, Gareth and Stephen recently launched a service called SiteSafe. In their daily work, they saw that while these blocks were becoming more widely used, some companies were not installing them properly, and this could and has led to accidents in the industry. Gareth commented, “As I travelled around, I began to hear more horror stories about companies that were not using the blocks properly, and as there are no current regulations to govern this work, we wanted to help people to think more responsibly about their use. The SiteSafe surveys have been both beneficial, and the detail we ensure goes into them has helped us to gain other custom for RSG too.”

Gareth and Stephen ensure that these surveys

are also double checked and signed off by an engineer that they work with, giving double protection for the customer – as Gareth says, “We are not scaremongering customers, but we are making certain that their site is safe.” Interestingly the Waste Industry Safety and Health (WISH) Forum recently released a report highlighting that there needs to be more Health & Safety responsibility taken on Waste & Recycling sites, and in this, RSG are ahead of the curve and already helping both present and potentially future clients.

RSG will also not compromise on safety in any way, shape or form. Gareth commented, “When we work with clients old or new, we make sure that every part of a project is safe before it is built. This is a very satisfying part of our job, but can be frustrating if people want to cut corners to save on cost.” The company will not give cheap quotes in order to gain business, but its work covers every aspect required of a project to ensure that it is safe.

RSG Structures work hard to stay at the forefront of the industry by being both unbiased & honest, but also by being completely independent. The company does not allow itself to get tied to one specific supplier, always working with whoever can give the best value for money and service for its customer. Gareth continued, “With us not having a factory, and not manufacturing products ourselves, we are always able to search for and supply the exact products for a customer with no hidden agenda on our part. We have nothing of our own to actually sell, but we can help clients find exactly what they need from the best suppliers and for the best price.”

Wastewater Engineering Company of the Year

ELIQUO HYDROK: Success and experience combined

In this issue of Sustainability Today, we are pleased to announce ELIQUO HYDROK as our Wastewater Engineering Company of the Year.

Another successful 12 months for ELIQUO HYDROK has enabled continued growth in the delivery of its environmentally considerate, cost effective and practical solutions for the Wastewater Engineering Industry. From planning, design, manufacture, through to installation and commissioning, ELIQUO HYDROK is the exclusive UK distributor for a number of leading European technologies designed to generate energy efficiencies, reduce capital and operating costs, and offer environmentally responsible solutions within the water industry.

We spoke to Lewis O’Brien, Managing Director of ELIQUO HYDROK, who explained how the last 12 months has been for the company.

“This last year has been really busy for ELIQUO HYDROK. Securing a number of large Advanced Batch Procurement orders has ensured we’re busier than we’d normally be at this point of the AMP cycle, which in turn has helped us make key investments to develop capacity and efficiency for the busier still periods to come. We’ve recently appointed a number of key new roles as the business and demand for our solutions continues to grow, which ties in with some exciting projects we’re undertaking with advanced treatment processes and carbon capture technology. We’ve also recently made some substantial and exciting investments, which we’ll be sharing more about as they commence.”

ELIQUO HYDROK take great pride in bringing the most effective technologies to market while keeping them carbon efficient. One of the main benefits to its services is the efficiency in which it can deliver through its supply chain, logistics, UK manufacture and ultimately the operation of its equipment. Because of this, it can offer a complete solution that when combined provides optimum performance with the lowest carbon impact.

ELIQUO HYDROK also offers complete solutions for Sludge Treatment from efficient digestions to energy-optimised drying. As a company, its experience in sludge treatment is comprehensive offering sludge thickening, digestion, dewatering and drying as part of its portfolio. Lewis explained how their technology can provide vital solutions to this market. “Right now we’re busy delivering many Mecana filters to meet WINEP requirements for Phosphorus removal, but we’re excited to be seeing the interest in our EloVac technology for capturing fugitive methane emissions from digested sludge. UK water company commitments to achieve Net Zero Carbon by 2030 (or even earlier in some cases) is driving a surge in demand for this technology which may soon be a common sight across many UK sludge treatment centres! Beyond this, DEFRA’s recent announcement on upcoming requirements to eliminate the environmental harm caused by CSO discharges is a topic very close to our hearts. ELIQUO HYDROK was founded on its CSO screen product range and combining these together with our technologies

to treat stormwater is something we look forward to bringing to market.”

Another area of expertise for ELIQUO HYDROK is Wastewater Treatment where it offers highly efficient systems and technology for WwTW, new builds, retrofit and asset refurbishment. In order to combat the current high energy level output that is historically demanded by the Wastewater Treatment process, ELIQUO HYDROK has an established ethos of providing innovative water engineering solutions that significantly reduce energy solutions into fine bubble aeration systems delivering an extreme high efficiency with reduced power consumption.

Lewis mentioned how these solutions tie in with the company’s long-term plans for the future. “Our present investments will ensure we bring greatly increased capacity to meet client demands for the remainder of AMP7 and AMP8. Our longer-term strategy revolves around readying our technologies for the demands of the AMPs to come – in this case eliminating environmental harm from CSO operation. Our expertise in CSO screening and Wastewater Treatment mean we have a portfolio of technologies already perfectly aligned to this challenge and we’re excited to be exploring how we can deploy this in optimised combinations to suit requirements as they emerge.”

ELIQUO HYDROK has experienced rapid growth over the past 12 months and its future is looking inevitably bright. The company’s ability to

produce and deliver continuous solutions that react and respond to the current state of the industry and its needs is a true testament to its remarkable team of experts who work hard to ensure that the ELIQUO HYDROK name is the first that comes to mind when considering innovation in Water Engineering Solutions.

Marked previously as our Water Engineering Solutions Company of the Month, ELIQUO HYDROK has also won three lots on the Thames Water Tertiary & Biological Filtration Equipment for Wastewater framework where its state-of-theart Mecana Pile Cloth Media Filtration units have also been recognised as the best and highestquality technology in Wastewater Management.

In closing, we asked Lewis how he felt receiving our award and he answered, “It’s great to have this external recognition for the work we do and the way we do it. For a long time, Wastewater Engineering has been somewhat ‘under the radar’ to many – but the wider awareness of the value of our green/blue spaces and the vital role our industry plays in maintaining it is really rewarding to see. Thanks for naming us as your company of the year for 2022!”

NSK innovations aid industry sustainability

Estimates suggest that over 50% of machines and industrial equipment run out of alignment in reference to ISO standards. But what is the cause of misalignment?

Well, problems usually begin when coupled shafts are positioned so that their gaps or offsets are beyond acceptable limits. Shafts subsequently run off-centre, leading to higher loading, excessive heat generation and greater energy consumption. Indications of misalignment include increased temperature, high vibration, loose coupling bolts and excessive lubricant leakage at bearing seals. Any machines or systems showing these signs will almost certainly have a negative effect on bottom-line profitability through higher power usage.

NSK offers advanced laser alignment tools for shafts (LAS-Set) and belts (LAB-Set) that help to ensure quick and perfect alignment every time. LAS-Set uses dual line lasers for easy set-up, even at larger distances, along with high-resolution digital sensors for precise results. LAB-Set houses two line laser transmitters, making alignment far more accurate than single laser head solutions. Adopting these tools not only contributes to energy efficiency, but also reduces wear on critical machine parts such as couplings and seals, subsequently minimising machine downtime & maximising productivity. Plants leveraging the benefits of NSK laser alignment tools have recorded energy savings of up to 17%, leading to a rapid return on investment (ROI). Solutions that contribute to sustainability not only protect the planet for future generations, they also save money and boost bottom-line profitability. NSK, with its raft of environmentally friendly product innovations, is committed to realising a carbon-neutral society.

Engineer and entrepreneur becomes fellow

A director of the awardwinning, fast-growing plastics recycling and manufacturing company, Plastecowood, has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. Henning von Spreckelsen was admitted to the Academy, which comprises 1,600 distinguished engineers at its AGM on 20 September 2022.

As a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Mr von Spreckelsen will continue his long-standing passion for promoting profitable engineering excellence for public benefit. He will engage with & further the Academy’s work which is both wide and diverse, including participating in entrepreneurship ventures and mentorship of the next generation of engineers. For over 30 years Mr von Spreckelsen has worked closely with the senior management teams of innovative British companies and together they have developed profitable ground-breaking technological solutions to complex problems.

One such problem was addressing the urgent need to recycle and reuse mixed plastic packaging waste and prevent millions of pieces going to landfill or incineration each year. The seven year old company, Plastecowood developed a unique recycling and processing technology for plastic waste and created an attractive and robust, carbon negative material called Smartawood™ – this is used to manufacture lumber to make a vast array of products (including fencing, pallets, gardening and playground equipment) substituting the need for making steel, concrete or chopping down forests.

Plastecowood is contributing to environmental sustainability by preventing more than 40 million pieces of plastic waste going to landfill every year and this will increase over time. This achievement received a prestigious Santander X Environmental Challenge award last year, which has brought the company greater international recognition. Plastecowood expects to turnover £3m in the coming year and £5m by 2025. https://raeng.org.uk/

Next generation Osmocote: Optimising efficiency & effectiveness

Taking ornamental plant nutrition and nutrient release to a new level, ICL has launched its 5th generation Osmocote controlled release fertilizer.

“Delivering super-efficient and effective nutrient release, our new Osmocote 5 products have been designed and developed to overcome specific nutritional challenges faced by growers using peat-reduced and peat-free growing media,” says ICL’s technical manager, Andrew Wilson.

“Osmocote 5 features unique nutrient matching release technology and an improved Optimised Trace Element Availability (OTEA) system to match plants’ needs throughout the release programme; the result are improved plant colour, health and growth.”

Although trace elements are required in relatively small quantities compared to NPK, they play a vital role in biochemical metabolic processes. However, some trace elements – such as Iron and Copper – are highly reactive and often become unavailable to plants.

Taking in to account the trend to reduce or eliminate peat, Osmocote 5 also features a slightly higher Nitrogen content to improve growth in these media – which tend to have lower nutrient buffering capacity.

“Put simply, Osmocote 5 safely delivers greater nutrient efficiency and effectiveness – which translates into improved quality plants as well as environmental benefits,” says Andrew.

Engineered performance solutions

In this issue of Business and Industry Today, we are proud to announce that we have selected VR-Tek Ltd as our IT Services Company of the Month.

Based in Royston, Hertfordshire, VR-Tek was established by Managing Director, Dave Pearce, back in 2007. The company is an IT Consultancy that provides non-functional testing services to its clients across all industry sectors. VR-Tek’s consultants work closely with the client’s IT delivery teams to conduct performance testing on their IT systems prior to delivery to ensure that these systems are capable of operating within their performance criteria during both normal and exceptional usage periods such as the Black Friday weekend. The company has extensive experience in testing both internal and external customer facing systems.

As an example, in the case of online stores. slow performance can cause potential customers to abandon their orders and instead shop with competitors who offer a more responsive shopping experience. Poor performance in logistics systems might mean that stock cannot be shipped out of a warehouse within the contracted delivery time, thus breaking delivery contracts with customers. There is always a direct cost impact of poor performance, as well as indirect costs due to brand and reputational damage. VR-Tek’s experienced consultants work with clients to mitigate the risks of issues being encountered in their live services.

For each client engagement, VR-Tek focuses on first developing a risk assessment to identify and prioritise the highest risk areas. A tailored test approach will then be produced, in which tests are designed that exercise the identified risk areas at the predicted load. Test scripts are then developed and executed using an industry standard test tool. After each test, the performance results are analysed and any areas where performance does not meet the requirements are identified and remedial actions are taken. The company is not tied to any load test tool vendor, which means that it is ideally placed to recommend the most appropriate and cost-effective tool to achieve the objectives defined in the test approach. The whole testing approach is designed to maximise the client’s return on investment and to mitigate the risks of performance issues being encountered in the live service.

In the Logistics sector, VR-Tek has recently developed a framework that reduces the development time for performance test scripts to test Warehouse Management Systems (WMS). Dave commented, “Our experience is that many companies struggle to develop robust and repeatable performance testing for their critical WMS on time and within budget for many reasons, so we developed the Athena WMS Test Framework.”

Athena is a test script development accelerator, and it has proved popular as it enables businesses to shorten the performance testing phase during

Hygiene industry experts join forces

Hygiene equipment application specialists H&M Disinfection Systems Ltd and specialist hygiene solution provider Christeyns Food Hygiene have today announced the signing of a strategic partnership.

Christeyns Food Hygiene, (CFH), based in Warrington and H&M Disinfection Systems Ltd of Northwich are both industry leaders with over 30 years of experience in their respective fields. Having worked together for three decades, this strategic alliance will allow the two companies to provide a turn-key solution to the food, dairy and beverage industries for effective cleaning and disinfection operations.

The current CFH engineering offering for the optimisation of water, energy consumption, dosing, time and labour will be strengthened, combining both chemical and engineering expertise including a complete equipment portfolio, CIP sets, Washdown Systems, Bulk tanks and bespoke engineering. This unique full-service package will include maintenance and periodic safety inspections.

“We are delighted to confirm this formal alliance with H&M Disinfection. The excellent equipment, control systems and reliable pump-sets they manufacture, combined with formulations created by Christeyns Food Hygiene will ensure

our customers can rely not only on the chemistry, but also on the application equipment,” commented CFH Operations Director, Andy Bethel.

Stephen Hall from H&M Disinfection says, “This partnership cements our long-term relationship enabling us to better service customers from both companies, with high quality formulations and the equipment to reliably and safety apply them to achieve a hygienic manufacturing unit.”

www.christeyns.com

www.hmdis.co.uk

the delivery of WMS applications. It also improves the quality and robustness of the tests by reducing the time to develop each performance test script leading to less test re-runs. Athena also accurately simulates the flow of stock through a warehouse for both inbound and outbound processes.

The nature and importance of this industry means that VR-Tek has plenty of competitors and must work hard to stay at the forefront. Dave continued, “Our consultants come from an engineering background rather than from a purely testing one, which is the case for some of our competitors. This means that we have a deeper understanding of modern IT architectures and can quickly analyse performance issues and drill down to find the root cause, which is not always the case with some other consultancies.”

Indeed, the whole point of performance testing is to minimise the risk of performance issues causing live services to fail. Traditionally, performance testing is conducted at the end of the application development lifecycle and is usually the last step before go-live. This means that performance testing activities often start later than planned and are constrained by time from the outset. In many cases, the delivery date cannot be delayed, so the number of test cycles are reduced or some tests not executed at all. These measures increase the risk of issues not being detected during testing and, instead, being encountered in the live service.

To counter this, the company also provides a performance engineering service in which it analyses a client’s application development process to identify areas where performance testing can be shifted left so that testing can be conducted earlier in the process when it is cheaper to identify and resolve performance issues.

VR-Tek works with any industry sector that has a requirement to minimise the risk of performance issues affecting their live services, and Dave concluded, “Our approach is based on our core ethics of professionalism, openness, integrity, honesty and flexibility. We have a solid reputation as evidenced by our satisfied customers and repeat business.”

By working in partnership with ACM Environmental, the firm has achieved exceptional environmental performance with Zero Waste to Landfill in 2020, 2021 and on target for 2022.

Christeyns Food Hygiene, as part of Christeyns UK, has been working on a strategy for reducing waste & emissions and is part of a group initiative, Project Terra, focusing on the firm’s business in relation to sustainability and the environment.

Considerable budget has been invested in equipment and training to ensure facilities are as modern and efficient as possible. Installing low energy LED lighting across the whole site has reduced usage by up to 75%. Other initiatives include EV charging points, the recycling of all toner cartridges, improving biodiversity on site, and monitoring resource usage to establish targets for reductions.

Raw materials are purchased from carefully selected suppliers, sustainability being a key requirement when choosing ingredients. The introduction of concentrated

formulations has reduced the number of deliveries and hence carbon footprint.

Containers are washed and reused and wash-out water from both customer sites and the firm’s facilities, is recovered and reused, reducing the amount of effluent being deposited into the environment.

Goods in transit insurance

As a professional freight forwarder we, of course, make every effort to ensure that your goods are transported from door to door without loss or damage.

When handling, transporting or storing your goods, we are also subject to certain conditions of carriage:

● UK domestic transport – Road Haulage Association (RHA) Conditions of Carriage (2020 Edition)

● International transport – British International Freight Association (2021 Edition)

● Warehousing – United Kingdom Warehousing Association (2019 Edition)

Liability rates

However, while we take every care with every job we carry out, the nature of the modern supply chain means that cargo is not always under our direct control and sometimes incidents can occur which result in an insurance claim.

Liability rates are based on the gross weight of the goods lost or damaged. Our liability as carrier for loss/damage under the conditions of carriage is:

● RHA – £1.30 per kg (£1,300 per tonne)

● BIFA – £2.20 per kg (£2,200 per tonne), except international traffic to/from Europe where the rate is £9 per kg (£9,000 per tonne)

● UKWA – £100 per tonne

What goods in transit insurance cover do you need?

It’s good practice for cargo owners to have goods in transit insurance in place to help claim for costs which can’t be recovered from the carrier.

All-risks goods in transit insurance cover isn’t expensive and has very few exclusions. Some companies will already have this cover either as a separate policy or as part of their commercial combined policies.

For general advice and guidance relating to goods in transit insurance claims, or to get a quote, please call +44 (0)1675 434690 or email us at: enquiries@internationalforwarding.co.uk

Bosch Secure Truck Parking and TRAVIS Road Services combine their booking portals

Bosch Secure Truck Parking and TRAVIS Road Services have forged an alliance against the shortage of truck parking spaces in Europe:

In a new partnership, the two companies will be combining their contingents and providing carriers with Europe’s highest number of bookable truck parking spaces: “From the beginning of 2023, users of Bosch Secure Truck Parking and TRAVIS Road Services will be able to access a total of 15,000 parking spaces at well around 400 locations in 14 European countries,” explains Dr. Jan-Philipp Weers, Head of Bosch Secure Truck Parking.

“In addition to the high safety standards that the majority of the 100 Bosch sites meet, there is good site coverage through approximately 300 parking locations of TRAVIS Road Services,” said Dennis van Veggel, CEO of TRAVIS Road Services. The portals provide freight forwarders with parking spaces in different areas, such as at truck stops, trucking marshalling yards, logistics centers. Freight forwarders can view and block-book all the parking spaces they need in real time via the usual platform, and bill paperlessly via efficient collective invoices. Bosch and TRAVIS maintain their individual offers on the respective portals.

Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, Pumps & Valves

Humidity in the winter

Humidity levels drop in the winter because cold air holds less moisture than warm air. Many large buildings, warehouses and factories use air handling units to ventilate and heat large areas.

These units take the cold dry air from outside and convert it to warm air inside. The problem gets worse when the dry air heats as it loses even more moisture, resulting in lower relative humidity.

The Science

Relative humidity is the amount of water vapour actually in the air, expressed as a percentage of the maximum amount of water vapour the air can hold at the same temperature.

At any given moment an air molecule will hold a certain amount of moisture – more on rainy days than hot sunny days. In winter, cold outside air (whether ‘wet’ or ‘dry’) is brought inside and heated. As air heats it expands, but the actual moisture content of each molecule cannot change, and therefore the relative humidity falls.

It is widely acknowledged that maintaining relative humidity levels between 40-60% significantly improves human well-being and mechanical performance. Read more to find out how low humidity effects both human and mechanical production.

How does low humidity effect our wellbeing?

Low indoor relative humidity has a negative effect on human comfort. The adult human body is typically 60% water, so in a dry environment our bodies naturally lose moisture. Unlike temperature, low humidity is more difficult to detect.

Typical symptoms include:

● Dry and itchy skin

● Cracked lips

● Dry eyes (especially for those with contact lens)

● Sore throats

● Nosebleeds

● Headaches

In addition, low relative humidity dries our mucous membranes and inhibits our body’s natural defence against germs, viruses, and bacteria, making us much more vulnerable to catching common colds and flus. Maintaining relative humidity between 40-60% is scientifically proven to reduce the spread of airborne pollutants and viruses.

How does low humidity effect mechanical processes?

Moisture absorption also affects hygroscopic materials like wood and paper. The low humidity dries out

Creating magic and making memories

In this issue of Business and Industry Today, we are pleased to have selected Event In A Tent as our Tipi & Tent Hire Company of the Year.

Established in 2010 by husband and wife team, Matt and Niamh Stephenson, while they were searching for the perfect venue in which to hold their own wedding celebrations. Event In A Tent has gone from strength to strength ever since.

After several years of weddings, parties, festivals and corporate events all over the UK and Europe, the Event In A Tent team is sure that it can help with any event, whatever the occasion, size or location. From its base in North Wales, the company provides tipi hire throughout Wales and the local counties of Cheshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire, Lancashire, Merseyside and Herefordshire, as well as the whole of the UK, Ireland and into Europe.

Matt and Niamh began their business with Tipis imported from Sweden, and these are suitable for 20 guests upwards, and as they are modular, a large number of guests can be accommodated. There are three types of Tipis called Nimbus, Cirrus 40 and Stratus 72, and these are all different sizes & can be combined to create the perfect venue for any event.

In around 2015, the company invested time and money in sourcing the very best quality Stretch Tents that are 100% waterproof direct from the premium suppliers in South Africa. These structures provide a highly versatile and visually stunning alternative to a standard marquee. The three-ply composite material

that allows them to stretch while still remaining waterproof, gives them their flowing shape that can easily be adapted to fit into the most challenging of sites, whether it be over terraced lawns, walled gardens or a cobbled courtyard. These Stretch Tents also come in a variety of sizes and colours, and they are very adaptable depending on ground conditions.

In 2018 Event In A Tent designed and launched its very own Timber Geodomes which are all manufactured in the UK. These come in two sizes, 12m and 15m diameter and cater for up to 280 people standing. The key element that makes these domes superior to those currently available is that they are constructed with a unique timber frame and a textured polycotton cover. They can also be transformed into an incredible dome stage with a few adjustments which has been very popular at festivals and a very unique alternative.

The dome has a high wind loading capacity, due to the inherent strength of the structure. They have been designed in accordance with an independent structural engineer to ensure they are capable of withstanding heavy loads (ie. lights, accessories, etc), and they are designed to be erected both quickly and safely.

Finally in November 2021, the company began importing Quad Domes, which are unique, square based Geodesic roofed structures with integrated lighting options. Event in a Tent have the UK rights to these structures, so they are a one-of-a-kind product in the UK. There are four different sized Quad Domes; a 5x5m suitable for 35 standing, 6m x 6m suitable for 40 people standing or 30 seated; an 8m x 8m suitable for 80 standing or 50 people seated, and a 10m x 10m suitable for 125 people standing or 80 people seated.

The Quad Dome has vertical walls with the aesthetics of a Geodome, but the practicality of a marquee. These are also modular, so they can be linked together to make larger, even more impressive spaces for an event. The coniferous wood used for

the beams is both dense and durable, making the Quad Dome a sure option for withstanding all kinds of weather.

All of the Dome Tents can be used all year round thanks to their strength and design, meaning that Winter events can be held in as beautiful a setting as any Summer party, and the Tipis look just as amazing in their natural, simple state as they do when dressed up for a night of celebration. Event In A Tent has an Aladdin’s cave of extras for hire from Edison bulb hanging lights, disco balls, through to furniture, fire pits and dance floors!

There is obviously competition in this industry, but Event In A Tent remains at the successful forefront for a number of reasons. Matt commented, “We were one of the very first Tipi hire companies in the UK, and no other similar company has the range of stock that we have. We believe that we are the only company that can provide the whole range of Tipis, Stretch Tents and Domes, and we have vast experience and knowledge in the industry.”

While the COVID-19 time was a difficult period for all businesses, Matt said that the company came up with new ways of working to get by. “The first lockdown was very tough indeed while we tried to adapt, but when the ‘Eat out to help out’ initiative began, we hired lots of tents out to pubs and

restaurants for use in their gardens. We also created our own pop-up glamping sites during 2020 and ’21 during the staycation boom, these Tent Villages were in Llangollen and Anglesey and were very popular.

Event In A Tent provide their tents for any event from small birthday parties, right through to weddings, festivals and corporate events. The friendly and professional team are on-hand at all times, and take pride in ensuring that they meet all customers face-to-face in order to be involved in the plans and support clients at every step.

As the company looks to the future, the aims are to continue to grow the Tent Hub side of the business, alongside the sales area. Event in a Tent also has a base in Lake George, in upstate New York where they hire out Tipis with plans to increase the stock over there as it is the only company on the entire east coast of America offering these products.

Matt concluded, “With a quality product behind us to provide a top-quality service, we’re confident that we are the best supplier for any event. With the experience of well over 500 events, we really can facilitate the perfect setting.”
