Distributing Density: Middle-Scale Housing for Sustainable Communities January-July 2020 Boston, MA • Conducted research and events for local, community-based, input on historic and existing middlescale housing to be presented to the City of Boston and local architects.

This project grew out of a workshop in partnership with Wentworth’s Innovation Center, The City of Boston, CITXL, and the Consulate of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The objective was to conceptualize strategies for abandoned or underutilized spaces in the City of Boston.

One prevailing issue was the steady decline of middle-scale housing in Boston, leading to inequitable neighborhoods.

Specifically, the project focused on the New England Triple Decker, a prominent immigrant typology in the late 19th and early 20th century as an starting point for developing new housing opportunities.

While research began on Blue Hill Avenue working with the MIT Real Estate Innovation Lab platformed a greater discussion for affordable, communitybased design efforts.

The studio was highly collaborative. We began by phasing the process into three distinct sections: research, urban landscape, and the housing strategy.

However, as efforts started, we didn’t yet realize how alive the project would soon become. We became invested in the history of the neighborhood, involved in the culture along the avenue, spoke to residents on the vacant sites about stories and the future they envisioned. We partnered heavily with outside mentors rooted and already at work on the street. The project would be challenged

by COVID-19 and the Black Lives Matter global protests.

It became an unfolding narrative, constantly challenging assumptions and leading us to advocate for greater change to urban planning, development models, and engagement.

My partner, Lauren Farnan, and I turned the focus of our building towards the role of Blue Hill Avenue’s existing population as an active agent in overcoming local challenges.

We addressed two marginalized groups on Blue Hill Avenue, its young adult and elderly, as integral to the process of skill development and community empowerment. Living together in microapartments around a workshop, citizens are empowered through generational exchange.

An institutional intervention expands the community’s knowledge, education and skills by access to design and shared spaces. Existing Blue Hill Avenue residents already hold the social and political promise to organically change the urban landscape, it just requires the framework to foster and nurture new relationships and trust with each other.

Phase 1: Research

The Triple Decker allowed a way for immigrants to reach a middle-class income through its economic ability to rent out floors. This ability lead to communities forming around Triple Decker neighborhoods.

Nationalistic efforts in the early 20th century lead a middle-scale housing decline around Boston.

Blue Hill Avenue’s growth correlates with transportation availability. Connection to Engel and Ashmont stations offered job opportunities and new neighborhood development. The transportation disconnect of Blue Hill Avenue in the 1950s lead to an economic decline and long-lasting community upset.

Using the research from phase one, the team redesigned Blue Hill Avenue with a focus on resiliency, transportation and social opportunity. Notable change include utilizing the historic median as a biking path while expanding the sidewalks for local business and community buildings.

Early schematic rendering for the redesign of Blue Hill Ave’s median focused on creating a social spine that unified the existing bus system and open public space.

The building’s ground floor extends the community-focus towards the street. As an area of refugee and flexibility, the loggia allows for meaningful exchange to occur beyond the building community itself.

The Medium is the Message Culinary School and Restaurant Post-imaging architecture as an extension of communal senses

This project began with a visit to our site in the South End neighborhood of Boston. The language of this neighborhood is one of community. Live music, social justice protest, experimental foods, and dog parks are some of the many ingredients that compose a rich, diverse, and vibrant culture within South End. However, we observed a certain detachment between the people and architecture. The stoic image of South End, red brick and turret windows, remained frozen in time while people, communities, and ideas change and evolve. Overtime, the timeless facade has created a detachment between the people and their architecture, building barriers through a perceived lack of transparency and expression. Can overt reconciliation extend to the South End community?

The comprehensive studio values attention to detail, conceptually and tectonically. Each project is required to adhere to local zoning and ordinances.

Students must report local building codes, IBC, and accessibility requirements as needed. Projects also must be quantifiable in their approach to systems. Structure, occupancy loads, and energy/water usage must be calculated and accommodated for in the design.

This expanded lens of work challenged us to incorporate systems into the design concept. Two strategies employed was a class kiosk competition.

The kiosk would serve like a satellite to the culinary school, enforcing its values and practice. Secondly, we conducted precedent studies from international culinary schools to question the relationship of architecture and food.

For our culinary school, we present the two images of South End: that of its architectonic character and that of its residents. The image of its architecture follows a rule of contextual reflection and depiction where as the image of people is dynamic: incrementalizing movement through facade framing. By progressively layering a series of imaging thresholds, we can reveal the two images, allowing for the interplay between to communicate agency and comprehend often veiled relationships.

Our project aims to promote investigation into the dynamic community of the South End in relationship to its architecture. It’s a statement against the neutrality of architecture in building neighborhoods and an invitation to deconstruct the barriers imposed by moving beyond surface perception and finding one’s identity.

Initial massing and programming followed a contextual strategy of reflection and depiction. The physical properties are abstracted while characteristics are embodied through program. This makes the final building contextually familiar but fragmented, creating a building difficult to comprehend from any one perspective.

Already on site is the Blackstone Community Center. Its program is flexible while veiled by the Neoclassical facade. Inspiration for the interplay of our facade came from the homeless urban intervention on West Brookline St.

Different densities, thicknesses, and diameters of the terracotta tubes relate to the program within the building, The more private spaces, like changing rooms, have less transparency with the other layers

An overt transparency of the architecture and its systems further alludes to the natural forces along West Brookline St.

Existing loading station for the Innovation School was required to still be accessible with the culinary school’s design.

The dichotomy of the two South End images, that of its architecture and its people, is highlighted through the contrast of the overall building and the restaurant core. While the exterior conforms to contextual pressures, the core is dynamic and highly expressive of human agency.

Nevertheless, they coexist and through experiencing its layering, their relationship is revealed.

Freedom by Design (FBD) is a community service program that uses the talents of architecture students to radically impact the lives of people in their community through modest design and construction solutions. We wanted to partner with an organization passionate about education and overcoming its barriers.

The New England Base Camp (NEBC) offered to work alongside us in our mission by inviting us to visit the camp and observe how they teach. NEBC offers outdoor learning to many different areas of Boston and encounter many socio-economic and cultural barriers that prevent skill learning. To address this issue, the NEBC wanted to renovate their storage cabin into a makerspace that children from any background can come and learn through its architecture.

We worked closely with both the NEBC and children to develop a series of needs for the renovation.

The teachers wanted flexibility, allowing the makerspace to be multifaceted.

The children wanted greater freedom from their space, granting them ownership of the space through painting, signing, and leaving their mark. In cooperation with the students at Wentworth, many of the students offered their talents to teach kids wood working and using hand tools. Overtime, the project became less about our goals but the life given to it by the community. Support and ideas grew until we needed to phase the project. Beginning with the addition of the new deck and canopy, the storage cabin would transform into a communityowned space for everyone despite their differences.

The project hinges on a child-centered approach to education.

We saw play and discovery as universal tools for learning.

Play at the NEBC comes from nature on a personal level. Our renovation needed to incorporate nature as an instigator of play. Furthermore, we learned that when children understand small objects, they then can begin to understand greater ideas of weight and force. To teach children how to build with our architecture, we would need to articulate the objects of its construction clearly.

The marriage of play, induced by nature, and discovery, supported by the tectonics of the renovation, would lead to a learning pedagogy where children learn for themselves. Our renovation aims to create a makerspace that promotes equitable education through play and discovery.

During the Fall 2019 semester, the Wentworth Department of Architecture celebrated the ten year anniversary of the Masters of Architecture program at the institution. The program, cordinated

by Kelly Hutzell, has shifted dramatically since its inception, now including travel studios, robotics, student organizations, and community partnerships. To launch the 2019-2020 Master’s class, adjunct professor Scott Smith was approached fo design and fabricate a temporary installation inside of the campus’ Center for Engineering, Innovation and Sciences (CEIS) building. Scott reached out to my colleauges and I shortly afterwards. The goal was to design, fabricate, and install the installation in under a month.

The team initially held two design parameters: utilize the entirety of the space allotted and exhibit the core values of the program (design, service, and travel). The installation would exhibit a decade of student works centered around these three tenents.

The idea became to transform the ground plane, offering elevation changes to inform heirachy and segment projects by themes. The idea to display the ground as a unified plane became important from an aesthetic and philisophical point.

Lastly, we settled on three rolling boards as structured points of ideology, all matted with a static but fragmented image and accented by monitors displaying a cycled showcase of work from both the M.Arch and upcoming BSA designers entering the program in the near future.

Angus, Alex, and I worked weekly to finalize designs, materials, processes, and prototyes. We settled on a white acrylic top that would rest upon wooden boxes with wooden siding fitted to the curves of the acrylic.

To get the curves, we would heat the acrylic and mold it into place using a form.

The final design was a monochromatic structure consisting of a single white plane rising from the ground, bending with each intersection of the boards before coming back to rest at the ground. The exhibit became more than highlighting student work. It revealed a story of the school and its designers, rooted in context but open in its trajectory. The grounded reality of Wentworth challenges our ideas but it cannot be a limitation for radical socioenvironmental change.

The Human Catalyst Costume, Projection, and Performance

Using civic improvisation as a methodology for producing spacial distortion.

Space + Media may initially seem to prescribe common, almost meaningless architectural terms, liable to lose their resolution through repetition and perversion. But adjunct professor Scott Smith presented each as technical terms in order to draw attention to their composition.

Space, either physical or imagined, can be challenged by the media, and by extension the material, content, and technique, in which we experience it. Scott translated this belief into the course organization. Students familiarized themselves with uniquely spatial and expressive media before using projection to revisit their precedents, integrating their own ideologies.

Finally, the class philosophy materialized into a final project derivative of the original ‘s intent but critically and entirely personal.

My studies followed the work of Anthony McCall and his Solid Light series. McCall was fascinated with the projector as a method for translating the two-dimensional sketch films into a three-dimensional conical sculptures.

These films and their subsequent light become inhabitable and the movement of film and people become interwoven.

Think of a traditional cinema where the projector rests above the audience across the room and onto the screen. More so, McCall was interesting in the interactions of people with the light sculptures. He invites the projector into the same plane as the audience where the momentary decisions of people becomes inseparable from the final product. It is by the dialogue between performer and sculpture that spatial and social boundaries expand.

The final project was a performance between a costume and its observers. The flexible mirror suit reflects two continuous scrolling lines that, through human movement, alter the spatial perception of the room. The relationship between the costume and people in the room becomes a conversation of impulsive decisions.

This dialogue is experienced through their context in a semistructured manner; that of an instigator and of a response. Over the duration of the relationship, a trust is developed and those decisions adapt and become more defined.

As such, the costume begins as the primary catalyst but by people’s responses, the piece becomes alive. The performance calls on a civic empowerment to create change in their environment through community and collaboration.

Phase 1: Precedent

Anthony McCall’s Solid Light exhibit at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn provided the ideological framework for the course’s exploration.

Analytique model researching the transformation of planer drawings to dimensional sculptures. A laser cut pattern is feed before a light, manifested by plexiglass layers, before altered by walking figures along a conveyor belt.

Phase 2: Projection Mapping

Expanding upon McCall’s ideas, the projection held contextual awareness by responding to properties of its space.

Without the haze, the solidification of light came from the interaction of lines. Once forming a closed geometry, the space would fill with light. This timely manifestation influenced user decisions through a slow awakening of the piece.

The Human Body as a Function of Spatial Transformation I began by defining the agencies of the human body, aspects of ourselves that allow us to perceive our presence in a space. Like with McCall’s work, we can see human movement as both volatile and unanimous, capable of both flexibility and rigidity. The costume explores how human movement can redefine people’s sense of space through elastic mirrors.

The costume works by having two projectors on either side of the performer running a loop of vertically scrolling lines. The performer wears the elastic mirrors on both sides of their arms and a curved mask . As the performer moves and the mirror bend to the arms, the line projection contorts from a linear, 2D projection into the illusion of 3D geometry..

From perpendicular, the projection appears unchanged but as performer bends, it either stratifies or converges. A convex bend is much dimmer but wraps around the room while a concave bend is a solidification of the drawing into spaces of dimensional depth

The Cycle of Violence Multifamily and Student Housing

Until this project, I hadn’t experiences a project at a large, urban scale. Earlier studio courses primarily focused on a conforming unit of the city rather than dominate contextual surroundings. This project dwarfed every previous project: 400,000 total sqft, building system integration, elevators, repeating floor plans.

When in isolation, a unit holds certain integrities but once multiplied, interconnected, and repeated vertically, it demands greater interest in its design decisions because of its ramifications for the whole. More daunting was our relationship to the city. Air rights, waste pollution, urban anxieties, and food deserts became residual issues our housing existed within. This studio forged a momentum of understanding the violent capabilities of architecture.

Our site was incredibly complex, resting at the intersection of the Boston University bridge and Commonwealth ave on one elevation while intersecting differently with the Massachusetts Turnpike and Soldiers Field Road on another.

Combined with the air rights and steep existing topography, the context was energizing if not a bit unorganized.

We were asked to design two buildings, one for temporary students of Boston University and another for more permanent residents like young adults and families.

Each were prescribed a minimum number of units, types (studio, double, etc.), and FAR. It was also the first project we had worked collaboratively with a partner. It became clear early on that we needed to develop strong collaborative skills and reconcile with the many conditions of our site.

Instead of rejecting the many contradictions on site, Lane Couture and I obliged to the site’s circumstances to find our narrative. Beneath the infrastructure was a vibrant ecosystem actively combating for the sake of survival.

Sidewalks with grass growing through the cracks, vines wrapping around the base of the bridge, trees bending over roadways to receive adequate light.

We were interested in the destructive tension between our city and its natural fabric, each battling for supremacy, and how it affects the lives of those around it.

If bringing this conflict to the forefront of everyday life, can we develop sustainable habits and strategies to mitigate the strenuous relationship. Perhaps urban housing offers a lesson on our role in the environment and how a symbiotic relationship holds solutions to modern anxieties.

Student Housing Nature’s Influence on Architecture The transitive culture around Boston’s student population manifests itself in the student housing design. It tells the story of existing ecology subjugated to architectural intervention. The amorphous cores of the building act as the primary structure of the building with floor plates and facades hung from it’s steel columns. Despite its encasement, the core holds authority over the architecture. The unconformity of the cores demands that the architecture responds with irregularity, open communal spaces, and a temporal steel mesh facade. All building systems are ran through the cores, supplying floors with water, electrical, and HVAC ducts. On an urban scale, the building rejects the grid of Commonwealth, orienting itself along the Mass. Turnpike and the more contentious lower level.

Multifamily Housing Architecture’s Influence on Nature The ideas of presence, place, and foundation manifests itself in the multifamily housing. In contrast to the student building, the multifamily housing is solid, authenticated by its close relationship to the upper level and urban grid. It tells a story of ecological forces analyzing the architectural composition for opportunities to flourish. The natural forces seek out necessary vulnerabilities in the architecture, like glass panels, then exploiting them for growth. Momentary evidences like green walls or wooden finishes translate through apartment units. The building narrates a climatic balance between the two forces with residents as the active mediator between the two. Residents grow plants on the green facade, filter air through their green walls, and utilize natural light to denote communal spaces.

A critical analysis of Ant Farm and our future relationship with consumable culture

The Emerging Technologies concentration study focuses on the body of continued research around history, theory, and criticism through the discipline and discourse around technique and technology. The yearlong course began with a foundational semester to understand critical theories without the context of our work.

The second semester calls on the researcher to form their own discourse within the industry by viewing past emergent technologies through the lens of contemporary politics to garner new perspectives. I chose to research Chip Lord and Doug Michels’ Ant Farm Inflatables out of intrest for their couter-cultural civic action using subversive techniques.

But as I evaluated the group’s writings, my research led to a social strategy for turning plastic excess into food abundance.

Ant Farm’s obsession with plastic as a liberating civic tool is problemmatic. In the age of heightened environmental awareness, the implications of plasticled initiatives come under intese scrutiny.

Single-use plastics and other waste products have resulted in a gluttony threatening the planet. My project rests at the accelartion of our plastic consumption to the point of becoming entangled in the fate of mankind. It takes Ant Farm’s convictions about plastic seriously and de-objectifies it to its pivital climax and its sacrificial death. It’s a social project with a technical backbone.

How do global citizen concerned with their role on the planet develop sustainable habits out of their consumable culture?

The conclusion drawn is transformative systems thinking spurred by social processes.

Visualize the new city emerging after the plastic. Each man, woman, and child’s flirtation with plastic will become the sustainance of a new generation. First, purge the pseudo material from your home. Drag it into the public eye and tear it apart. May the fungus and mushrooms that grew beneath us activate and chemically digest it. On full display of the world, in each nation’s capital, a new form of architecture with emerge. An image both sublime and hopeful. Inoculated in a wrap that will also be digested, The result will lead to new questions of surplus rather than excess. The world feed on the backs of our failures. It is of the utmost importance that we rethink our relationship with both industry and the environment or we or stand trial for the death of our species.

Minimal Surfaces 3D Printing offers the possibility of creating complex mathamatical geometry.

If recycled PETE can be used to create an infinitely interconnected minimal surface, like Gyroids, growing mycelium would allow for interconnection and eventual growing structures.

Experiments Multiple experiments observed the fruiting of Pleurotus through different gyroidal geometry, substrate mixtures, and spawns.

Experiments were conducted using a homemade inoculation chamber with perlite to manage moisure and humidity levels.

Differently-sized plastics were mixed with the substrate medium until rapid mycelium growth became reliable. All gyroids were printed using PLA plastic due to the potential risk to institutional equiptment. The hard PLA plastic was unable to be digested but the PETE substrate mix proved successful.

Further research steps would be selective inoculation to create a strand aggressive enough to break hard plastics.

This course investigates the methodology of thinking through making through the introduction of a framework engaged in theoretical and physical modes of learning, critical inquiry and design speculation. The course adopted the specific material of wood as a focusing lens for conceptualization and for developing a relationship with materiality and its tooling. In partnership with the Center for Applied Research and its equipment, the course gave extensive training and familiarity with laser cutting, CNC routing, and hand tools. The specificity of the material and the limited amount of equipment encouraged an investigation into the properties of wood and what areas lend themselves to certain configurations and techniques.

Oriented around physicality, we engaged in continued design exercises and workshops. Beginning with chipboard, we developed a series of planer relationships.

The object would have inscribed intent into how planes met that informed or challenged later models. Next, we transitioned to basswood, recognizing the difficulties of translating the highly malleable chipboard to more rigid sheets. The discussion between the two exercises informed the third iteration where the individual detail at two planes continued into a twelve plane, interrelated system.

The introduction of plexiglass highlight details and challenged calculations. Lastly, two designers from the class collaborated in unifying their individual concepts into a coauthored series of fragmented planer relationships.

I started observing the planer relationships described as a sumtotal of a inner system of forces at play and where component totality became a cumulative picture of recorded order. I began fragmenting these forces into planes themselves where the interactions occur at the edges of the larger planes. The formal continuity of planer relationships from detail to whole led me to interlocking joinery and its behavior in the course. The grain of the wood offered an authenticity by resisting movement once in position. Secondly, the technique of laser cutting charred the depth of the basswood. This gave the secondary system literacy through aesthetic differentiation.

The greater social implications of this viewpoint expresses the individual as a key agent in creating a functioning whole.

As planar relationships increased in complexity and fragmentation, the static interlocking joinery became unable to continually synthesize. Instead, we developed a dynamic system of interlocking “clip” joinery that used the potential energy of bent wood to lock joinery together.

Freedom By Design (FBD) is a program of the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) that utilizes the talents of architecture students to radically impact the lives of people in their community through design and construction solutions.

WIT FBD began as a team of scrappy students hungry for a new perspective of human-centric design at Wentworth. We valued designing a process, not a final product. Entirely student-ran, Freedom

by Design provides architectural services through community outreach initiatives.

Members meet clients, work collaboratively on designs, and work towards financing and fabricating the deliverable. FBD challenges designers to become greater advocates in their communities and design projects with dignity for its many

The first project began as a partnership with the YMCA of Greater Boston and the Center for Community & Learning Partnerships (CLP) at Wentworth. The YMCA were looking for a renovation of their existing arts and crafts cabin on their youth summer camp, Camp Ponkapoag, in the Blue Hills Reservation. After an initial visit, it became clear the love held for this cabin. The children had hand-made signs, signatures on the cross beams, and a mural on the back wall. But it was also apparent that the space was insufficient for both volunteers and children alike. Immovable furniture, heavy windows, low ceiling clearance. As we assessed the growing needs of the camp, our goal became how to instill both ownership and dignity into a new cabin, acting as a space for past stories and new people.

Over the course of a year, the project became a communitywide project. Students from Wentworth participated in volunteering, offering design ideas, and contributing materials.

FBD hosted events to build relationships with kids and have them contribute to the new cabin. Numerous donations from around Boston all empowered us to design and build a new cabin, co-authored by many talented people. While the cabin addressed the growing program with improved lighting, air circulation, and flexibility, the impact of the project comes from the process. It’s a foundational project to me on architecture’s relationship with people. There is no new art cabin without the direct involvement and investment of people wanting something better for their community.

Generations of children had added to the identity of this cabin. New furniture and cabinets would allow for children to leave their mark through events and programs hosted by the camp and FBD.

To alleviate the space, operable doors and windows open connections to the environmental context while allowing passive air circulation and natural light.

Design Charrette As a collective body, Freedom

by Design students wrote, sketched, and discussed possible solutions for the new cabin in a hosted series of design charrettes.

Community Input This event was an organized opportunity to allow FBD members to interact with the YMCA youth, and a chance for the kids to be a part of the project. The panels were prepared by the FBD Chapter, and we took them to the a local YMCA while the students were there over their spring break.

Three age groups 5-6, 7-8, and 9-12 all had the chance to add their mark. This ownership of the final design continues the original cabin’s generational traditions while preparing for new ideas through easy and affordable methods.

Construction Once the design was approved by the YMCA, the kids, and the mentors, the team began preparing construction documents and details for the final construction. Fabricated on campus over the course of two nights, the team managed to frame and dry fit the cabin The FBD team also became involved in other ways at Camp Ponkapoag. The directors of the youth program wanted to make renovations to their existing pavilions to allow multiple groups of kids without a fear of distraction. We spent weekends working with volunteers to frame infill walls. During our time volunteering, we learned more about the camp and the children.

This project began as a project partnership between Freedom by Design, the Thomas Menino YMCA, and the Center for Community & Learning Partnerships. Initially a simple walkway, the project grew in scope until Freedom by Design had to back out.

Meanwhile, the vision of the project continued to evolve with the YMCA’s changing needs in the Hyde Park community. Accessible to the public but able to be closed, the back lot of the building aimed to be a classroom, an exercise station, and also a gathering space. Backed by an youth educational development grant, the YMCA approached Rob Trumbour into handling the project. Rob, with experience as a resident at Boston’s Autodesk Build Space and a successful studio project in Hyde Park earlier approached the emerging technologies class for the project.

The Studio 7 Architectural Design course is the first and only studio within a particular concentration. It’s highly collaborative, research-based, and often includes community partners on projects. The team was dynamic with each member taking different roles throughout the process.

Experimentation is encouraged and provoked through multiple iterations and professional partnerships. All presentations were done with the clients from the YMCA and Hyde Park community members. The studio challenged the team to consider fabrication, information, and detail as important to formulating the final design as any other inspiration.

It challenged our toolset, introducing the Autodesk Build Space’s waterjet and robotics departments.

The renovation seeks to create a responsive and continuous formal language of distinct spaces that offers varied uses through practical applications.

We proposed a “line”, that transitions from overhead steel channeling to cast concrete to stone pavers.

These materials are categorized by the usage of the space it defines. By accomplishing this, the landscape remains diverse without clarity.

Offset from this line is a screen, revealing and concealing areas from different perspectives.

Taking advantage of parametric design programs like Grasshopper enables use to standardize components while allowing for specific variation. By extension, the site itself is able to be coherent, safe, and engaging while fostering the necessary freedom to make it a community.

The nearly 6,600 sq/ft back lot is used heavily by the various youth and community programs organized by the YMCA. Although relatively flat from River Street, the site steeply slopes before flattening along Central Ave. Large maple trees line cover the lower site and line the neighboring houses and church.

The YMCA outlined numerous programs for the renovation. Our goal was to allow the open flexibility while unifying the different areas under a unified formal language.To acheive this, we developed a strategy that defined spaces by integrating into its usage.

Seating/Line The seating was defined through existing programs and future usage of the site. The large circles exceltuates the classroom spaces while linear threads support moments of rest. Each bench is made using precast concrete and a ruled surface insert made by the robotics.

Screen The grant alloted to the YMCA required fencing for the project.

The team investigated how the fencing could act as a screen instead of a barrier. The final proposal acted adjacent to the main line while employing parametic design to reveal and conceal the community through the fencing.

Canopy Supporting the agency and flexibility of the YMCA, the ability to add temporary canopies in the larger gathering spaces was added. The overlap alleviates a single canopy from defining spaces, opting for a more fragmented and open spaces.

The design team later used fabrication as a conceptual framework.

The standardization of bench components in the final design reduced construction, material, and labor cost while reinforcing the formal language.

Northern Design Precast joined the team to help administrate the concrete pours for quality.

Like with the benches, the fence was standardized to reduce time and cost. However, the CNC process allowed for variation in the spacers to allow control of vertical tilts. This meant fences could be standardized but could be customized to its programmatic function.

Pavers As not to lose the site’s ecological importance, the decision to use pavers mediated the need for solid walking ground and environmental change.

We partnered with Unilock to select two paver types to designate the two different paths through the site.
