Hello and welcome to our first issue of 2018. We hope you all had fun and frolics over the holidays and that January isn’t proving too much of a bind, especially for those of you who made resolutions this new year (personally my only ever resolution is to never make any New Year’s resolutions!).

Resolution or not, now is traditionally the time of year that we tend to look at our lifestyles and what we might do to shed a few of those holiday pounds, and doubtlessly a few of us might be tempted with the latest ‘miracle diet’. Before you do, however, we recommend you take a look at our piece on the ‘Worst Diet Fads of 2018’ by Nutritionist Emma Brown on page 40.

We advise just keeping it simple, eat less, and exercise more! And with that in mind why not check out Explore Kent’s fantastic weekend of walking along the romantic Elham Valley Way (p18) or pull the bikes from the shed and cycle through a seasonal palette of wonder through Perry Woods (p16).

For those of us who have already caved into our cravings and just fancy some really top nosh then take a look at our reviews of Ramsgate’s fantastic Falstaff Restaurant on page 44 and the award winning Rajdani in Sevenoaks on page 38.

Of course the Christmas and New Year period is also a notoriously popular time for popping the question; and if you’re lucky enough to count yourself among the newly engaged then you can get plenty of inspiration from our annual East Kent Weddings special on pages 70-100.

TEDxFolkestone to return in 2018 TEDxFolkestone is returning after a successful inaugural event and the search is on for Kent people who want to share their inspirational stories and insight as part of the 2018 event.

The theme of this year’s event is: ‘Courage to step beyond’, whether in life or business and potential speakers have until 1 March to apply to be part of TEDxFolkestone.

The organisers of TEDxFolkestone have set themselves the challenge of hosting an event that champions inspiration, innovation, collaboration and leadership across the community and Kent businesses.

Liú Batchelor, the Folkestone-based coach and project leader, and a committee of like-minded professionals is organising TEDxFolkestone and sharing the global TEDx mission of self-organised events that highlight ideas worth spreading.

Liú Batchelor, said: “The area is synonymous with courage from the past but also the present. We want TEDxFolkestone to showcase the inspirational people that live in this part of Kent and beyond, and give them the opportunity to share their ideas and stories.

“With courage, people can push past the boundaries created by fear to achieve extraordinary things, and discover that they possess almost unlimited potential to achieve. With courage, we can all reach beyond our comfort zone, to develop and grow.

“Ideas are needed to fuel innovation in today's fast-changing world. They can come from anywhere, and anyone.”

In addition to more accomplished speakers, TEDxFolkestone is a platform for ‘unheard voices'. Those who apply to speak will be invited to attend development workshops, including sessions with last year’s speakers, who will answer any queries and offer inspiration and advice.

Cineworld announces Opening Date for Dover Six-Screen Multiplex The new cinema will feature six screens showing the latest Hollywood releases, as well as pick ‘n’ mix, Baskin Robbins ice cream counters and a selection of alcoholic beverages.

The cinema will launch just in time for audiences to get their pulses racing with the next instalment of the Fifty Shades saga, Fifty Shades Freed and Marvel’s superhero blockbuster, Black Panther.

Cineworld, the UK’s leading cinema chain have announced its latest cinema in Dover will open on Friday, 2nd February 2018.

The 909 seat cinema will be located at St James Retail and Leisure Park. Dover’s excitingly new development will offer members of the local community a place to shop, enjoy a meal, as well as the latest blockbusters. With the introduction of Cineworld the St James development will transform the retail and leisure offer in the heart of Dover and South Kent.

Kent distillery awarded sole Master medal for Green Initiatives Greensand Ridge Distillery, in Shipbourne has been awarded a Master medal in The Distillery Masters run by The Spirits Business for their work on sustainability.

The Distillery Masters looks at the places behind the products – distilleries – and pays attention to increasingly critical aspects of the spirits world: tourism, digital marketing, experimentation in production, and sustainability.

Awards include Bronze, Silver and Gold medals, with the Master designation being reserved for entants which show exceptional innovation and quality, well beyond peers.

“Judges were blown away by the extra mile Master medallist Greensand Ridge Distillery went to, to boast heightened green credentials. The distillery uses 100% renewable power, is using innovative means to target zero-waste, use no plastic or chemicals, and creates products using damaged or surplus local crops, and has implemented sustainable wood-fired warehouse heating, among other things.”

“An environmental way of thinking about the world has been there right from the conception of the business. It’s great to see a business leading by example with these sorts of ideas.”

Founder Will Edge hopes the distilling industry will be quick to adopt more sustainable practices. “Much of what we do would be easy for many distilleries to implement, it just takes a mindset shift to get there - low impact on the environment, high impact on the community”.

GEEK Back at Dreamland For Half Term Retro Fun Dreamland Margate will once again host Kent’s largest gaming festival, GEEK (Games Expo East Kent), which takes place on February 16th to 18th.

Thousands of dedicated gaming enthusiasts, families looking for half-term fun, and those who are simply seeking to indulge their nostalgia for retro consoles from their childhood are set for an unforgettable February as they meet, make and play.

Taking over the entire undercover areas of the park, GEEK 2018 will be transforming Dreamland with a space theme as it celebrates the 40th anniversary of the original Space Invaders. Look for Oast Houses dotting the landscape, symbolising a rich history of Kentish hop picking.

In Selling itself, the Grade I listed St Mary’s Church should not be missed, its transepts date from 1190 and each stained glass lancet window is intricately decorated.

Pedalling along this well-defined signed cycle track, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to stop and admire this precious landscape held dear in

generations of hearts. Nestling within the distinct chalk slopes of the North Downs you’ll feel protected from the elements as you cycle through woodland, orchards and meadows surrounded by rolling countryside.

Pass by meadows of fresh grass, ready for the dairy herds as they’re released out into the fields after a long winter,

there is nothing more delightful than seeing livestock in the fields enjoying the sunshine on their backs and curiously stopping to watch as you pass by.

Looking ahead at the patchwork fields studded with sleepy villages you might notice some early marigolds appearing.

During the summer months, fields will be awash with marigold blooms, the seeds beginning to germinate now that the weather is getting warmer.

Continue through wonderful orchards, their spring blossoms providing a real splash of colour in this beautiful landscape. During the winter the trees will have provided a safe shelter for wintering wildlife that thrive in this area.

The shady woodlands will be springing into life, with leaf buds beginning to form – a true sign that spring is on its way.

Don’t forget to treat yourself to some food and drink at a local pub. There is a choice of three great pubs along this route. The Rose & Crown at Perry Woods has a long and interesting past.

In the 1800’s it was owned by a local miller and called the Waggon & Horses.

The Red Lion serves quality food with a great selection of craft ales and beer whilst the White Lion in Selling is a traditional English village pub serving

real ale, good wine and delicious food. Food sourced locally helps local business to thrive and keeps the working landscape alive that surrounds you.

This is a perfect cycle trail if you’ve recently returning to cycling and looking for an exciting new trail to try out. Suitable for all types of bike, Perry Woods makes a fantastic family day out amongst Kent’s most dramatic landscape.

EAST KENT WALKS

THE ROMANTIC ELHAM VALLEY Savour the romantic landscape of the Elham Valley nestled in the midst of the Kent Downs AONB.Taking you through some of Kent’s most enchanting countryside, you will fall in love with ancient woodlands, secret byways and charming, unspoilt villages. Perfect for a weekend escape, experience a timeless seaside resort, a ride on a steam train, ancient churches, museums, country pubs and the bustle of the cathedral city of Canterbury.Whether you take the whole walk or a smaller section, you are sure to have a wonderful time exploring this popular route where you can enjoy the peace but be only a stone’s throw from civilisation.

Setting out from the glamourous market town of Hythe packed full of wonderful independent shops and winding alley ways you’ll find yourself alongside the Royal Military Canal, constructed as a defence system to prevent invasion from Napoleon. Nowadays the canal is enjoyed by day trippers and holiday makers who holiday on canal barges. See them pass you by, some are delightfully decorated a wonderful reminder of a more relaxed way of life.You’ll pass an 18th century town hall, easily identifiable with its imposing white portico and large clock.

The ground floor once provided shelter for an open market.

Walk quietly through Scene Wood, an ancient coppiced woodland.You will 18

be rewarded with the sight or sound of birds and small animals. Take in the wonderful sight of spring flowers and ferns that grow on the woodland floor.

The church of St Nicholas in Newington is worth a peep inside.

It’s a Norman Church with a 15th century pulpit with a delightful stained glass window of St Nicholas.

You’ll be following the line of the Old Elham Railway, a disused line that used to link Canterbury and Folkestone.

The bridges along this stretch allowed for the safe passage of farm livestock.

As you head towards Elham, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Railway museum. It houses a great collection of local railway memorabilia, equipment and working models.

Look out for the spoil bank. This railway embankment you see was built up with spoil from Etchinghill tunnel to the north-west. The excess soil was dumped, forming the spoil bank.

Further along you will see Etchinghill Tunnel and cutting. Hidden in the tunnel and deep cuttings, runs the track bed of the former valley line.

As you enter into the village of Lyminge, you’ll see the church of St Mary and St Ethelburga. St Dunstan of Canterbury rebuilt the church in 965.You can make out the remains of the even older building in the church

walls. This building was a nunnery and monastery founded in the 7th century

by Ethelburga daughter of King Ethelbert of Kent. A short distance on is St Elthelburga’s Well. The crystal clear water is the likely main source of the Nailbourne. The canopy and chain pump date from 1898.

Continuing your walk along the route of the Nailbourne and along the ploughed up railway line you may spot old rail posts in the fences and the culverts where the line once criss crossed the stream. The old siding just beyond the railway bridge was where trains used to stop to collect produce. There are also two former railway cottages located to the east of the bridge.

As you head into Elham, perhaps the highlight of this walk, look out for the square. There is a fine selection of quality pubs, in and around the square and a wonderful collection of listed buildings including the King’s Post, a medieval hall house with fine oak beams. It was given a facelift in the Georgian times which can be clearly seen when looking at the outside. There is also a 13th century church and the old level crossing marked simply by a hump in the road and a brick or two stamped “EVC”.

From Elham continue onwards through beautiful landscape, Hall Down is an excellent example of how appropriately grazed chalk grassland can produce a

[days out ] wonderful array of spring wildflowers.

Looking north, look for Wingmore Bridge over the old railway line below you.Yesterday’s walkers may well have sat on that bridge watching the steam trains puff through the landscape, a slight hint of smoke combining with the scent of the wildflowers.

Continue through Hollow Lane, which is signified by the wheels, feet and water of time that has carved out this lane over many centuries. Look out for the gnarled trunks of hedgerow trees which also document their age.

Look at the contrast of the upcoming Baldock Downs compared to Hall Down. Baldock Down is an example of unkept chalk grassland. Lack of grazing allows for scrub plants like dogwood and hawthorn to take over from flowers.

This area of grassland is one of the finest examples of chalk grassland that has never been improved and as you head west different plants appear in the soil is it changes from dry and alkaline chalk to moisture holding acid clay.

You will now pass through a wonderful wooded landscape of conifers and sweet chestnut in Covert Wood. Sounds of the woodpecker can be heard hammering away on the hollow trunks of the once native trees. Look across at the fields of Barham Downs; you might well spot skylarks that are prevalent in this area during spring and summer months.

Look out for Barham Court, a 17th century residence where local disputes used to be settled. The 13th century parish church contains a memorial window to soldiers who camped nearby in the Great War. You will see Oast Houses dotting the landscape, many are now converted for residential use, however much of the land is still used for agriculture including hops.

Look for an old stretch of hedge around 30 metres long. Each species of shrub or tree adds 100 years to the age of a hedge! See if you can work out the age of this hedge.

Passing through the picturesque village of Kingston, stop by for a pint of Kentish ale at the Black Robin pub.The pub was named after a notorious 18th century highwayman who supposedly frequented pubs where Rigden Dellman ales were sold. Before you leave the village, be sure

not to miss St Giles Church, a Saxon church. The wall paintings, font and pulpit are of particular interest.

Making your way towards Bifrons Park, you’ll pass by Charlton Park.You will see Charlton Mansion through the trees as you walk along this easy going three mile stretch. The building dates back to the Tudor period with a fine panelled interior. The parklands suffered extensive damage in the storm of 1987, however the woodlands are now well on their way to being re-established.

The straight stretch of walk is part of Watling Street, the Roman Road that runs from Canterbury to Dover. A Roman burial ground was unearthed at nearby Bridge.

The Norman church near Bifrons Park built of flint and Caen stone is renowned for its fine stone carving and exquisite windows. Do see at least the south doorway and rose window at the east end of the chancel.

Passing through Bifrons Park, look at the mossy foundations of the once magnificent Bifrons Mansion once home to ‘Prinny’s’ mistress, the Mardlioness of Conyngham.

You’ll now be entering the historical city of Canterbury, with its world class cathedral, cobbled alleyways and Tudor buildings. Home to the Marlowe Theatre, the Canterbury Tales and River Tours, Canterbury should not be missed. Stop here at the very least for a drink in a micro pub or a bite to eat in one of the many delightful tea rooms, cafes and restaurants.

joins the old route of the pilgrims from the Kent Coast to Canterbury, as they made their way to the Cathedral. On your way towards the Cathedral you will pass a row of almshouses, twelve poor folk of the parish found a free haven here thanks to the generosity of Mrs Ann Smith.

You’ll pass into Burgate. The street takes its name from the Burgate or Borough Gate. Rebuilt in 1475, most of the gate was demolished in 1781, the remaining tower in 1822.

The Tower of St Mary Magdalene, an elegant 16th century tower that survived the 19th century demolition of the rest of the church and the war time bombing is perpendicular in style.

It looks rather unusual in such a busy area but still stands proud.

Your walk ends near to the Cathedral at Christ Church Gate. The 16th century Christ Church Gate is, to quote a 17th century observer “a very goodly, strong and beautiful structure” and a fitting approach to the cathedral.

The Elham valley walk is a wonderful walk, loved by generations of people through the wonderful Kent landscape.

Going through country to city, it is a walk that will give you as much pleasure as challenge and an opportunity to see some of the most wonderful sights in Kent. It is a walk that should not be missed.

Meghan Markle Rachel Meghan Markle (born August 4, 1981) is an American actress and humanitarian who is set to become a member of the British royal family upon marriage to Prince Harry in May 2018.

Raised in Los Angeles California, 36-year-old Rachel Meghan Markle-who chooses to go by her middle namewas involved with the entertainment industry from a very young age. As a child she would often visit her DutchIrish father, Thomas Markle Sr., an Emmy-winning lighting director, on the sitcom sets where he worked.

Markle’s African-American mother, Doria Radlan, is a yoga instructor and social worker who lives in the wealthy View-Park Windsor Hills in California. Her parents divorced when Markle was six.

After completing a degree in Theatre and International Studies at Northwestern University, Illinois, Markle took work as a freelance calligrapher and restaurant hostess to support herself while appearing in several small roles on American television shows, including sitcom The War at Home (2006), crime procedural spin-off CSI: NY (2006) and sci-fi series Fringe (2008).

When invited to write an essay for Elle magazine in 2015, Markle spoke candidly about her experiences as a biracial woman trying to find work in the television industry.

“Being 'ethnically ambiguous', as I was pegged in the industry, meant I could audition for virtually any role” she wrote. “Sadly, it didn't matter: I wasn't black enough for the black roles and I wasn't white enough for the white ones, leaving me somewhere in the middle as the ethnic chameleon who couldn't book a job.”

Her breakout role arrived in 2011 when Markle was cast as enterprising paralegal turned attorney Rachel Zane in USA Network’s Suits. Moving to Toronto for filming, Markle appeared in seven seasons of the hit legal drama. She plans to retire from acting work following her marriage.

Outside of acting, Markle was the founder and editor-inchief of her own lifestyle website, The Tig, and shared her inspirations with fashion site In Style: “Food was a nobrainer to me because I love to cook…I'm from California and farm-to-table is very much in our ethos…For my beauty category, I didn't want to just do make-up and hair 32

tips-it's really about the internal beauty too.” The Tig ran for three years, shutting down last April.

Markle has also worked with Canadian clothing brand Reitmans on two womenswear capsule collections, inspired by her own fashion tastes and the glamourous outfits worn by her Suits character. The range was designed with an emphasis on affordability. “These girls go in to the store with their hard-earned money,” She said, speaking with Canadian news site The Star about fans of the clothing line. “And I care about that. I was not a girl who grew up buying $100 candles. I was the girl who ran out of gas on her way to an audition.”

Identifying as a feminist, Markle has spoken publicly several times on the subject of gender equality. Appearing as a UN ambassador in a speech in Beijing on International Women’s Day 2015, Markle shared how she has been committed to the cause from an early age. At eleven, after seeing an advertisement for Ivory soap with the tagline “women all over America are fighting greasy pots and pans”, she was encouraged by her father to act. Writing several letters to the manufacturer, women’s rights attorney Gloria Allred and then First Lady Hillary Clinton, she began a campaign which succeeded in getting the advert’s slogan changed to “people all over America”.

In recent years she has attended international children’s charity One Young World’s annual summits to speak on gender equality and modern-day slavery.

Markle has travelled to Rwanda as a global ambassador for World Vision Canada for their Clean Water Campaign, humanitarian work a passion she shares with her royal fiancé.

It was a rainy day in Toronto when Markle first met Prince Harry after being set up on a blind date by a close mutual friend in July 2016. After around six months of dating, intense media coverage speculating on their relationship and remarks on Markle’s ethnicity prompted an official memo from Prince Harry addressing the harassment directed towards her.

[feature ] Markle first spoke publicly about their relationship with Vanity Fair in September 2017, openly telling the magazine “We’re in love. I’m sure there will be a time when we will have to come forward and present ourselves and have stories to tell, but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time. This is for us. It’s part of what makes it so special, that it’s just ours. But we’re happy. Personally, I love a great love story.” Later that month she would make her first official public appearance with Prince Harry at the Invictus Games, the sporting event created by the Prince for veterans and injured military service personnel.

Following the Invictus Games Markle was invited to meet the Queen over tea at Buckingham Palace. It’s thought that this is when Prince Harry sought his grandmother’s permission to marry, as the Queen must pre-approve any engagement for family members up to the fifth in line for the throne. This position will be held by Prince Harry until the birth of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s third child, due in April.

With the blessings of the Queen and Markle’s parents, Prince Harry proposed over dinner at the couple’s Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace. The engagement was officially announced by Clarence House in November 2017.

Prince Harry designed the engagement ring, which was produced by court jewellers Cleave and Company. The yellow gold trilogy style ring is formed of a large central diamond sourced from Botswana, a location close to the couple’s hearts where they stayed early in their relationship.

The two accompanying diamonds are taken from a brooch that was part of Princess Diana’s private jewellery collection.

The royal family will pay for the wedding, which will take place Saturday 19th May 2018 at St George’s Chapel, Windsor, which previously hosted the weddings of Harry’s uncle, the Earl of Wessex and his cousin, Peter Philips. The Prince of Wales and Camilla Parker Bowles also received a blessing from the Archbishop of Canterbury here following their marriage.

The wedding day is not planned to be a bank holiday; however, the Saturday date will give many people the opportunity to travel to Windsor to take part in the celebrations. For those who’d prefer to raise a toast to the happy couple at their local, an extension to pub opening hours is being considered for the royal wedding weekend.

"I hope that this relaxation of the licensing hours will allow people to extend their festivities and come together to mark what will be a very special moment for the country." Home Secretary Amber Rudd told the BBC ahead of a four-week Home Office consultation on plans for the wedding.

Of course, the pubs will already be busy that weekend, with the FA Cup final falling on the same day as the wedding – a busy day for Harry’s brother William, who usually attends the match in his role as the President of the Football Association. An FA spokesman said: "Saturday 19 May promises to be a wonderful day with such a special royal occasion being followed by English football's showpiece event, the Emirates FA Cup Final. With millions coming together to watch both events at home and around the world, it will be a day to celebrate."

Food and drink writer, George Shaw, wraps up against the elements and visits the ‘best curry house’ in the south-east.

It was with some apprehension I approached my first curry of the new year, having spent two weeks feasting on some tremendous Indian dishes during a two-week trip to Goa over Christmas. I was concerned local cooking might fall short of the real thing.

But I was intrigued to discover that an Indian restaurant near Sevenoaks had recently scooped Best Indian Restaurant in the South-East at the prestigious Asian Curry Awards for 2017.

I was not the only one. On a bitterly cold midweek January night, before pay day, when what seemed like the world and her husband were engaged in a dry, Veganuary, the place was almost full.

Only two small tables remained unfilled.

And it is far from small, with ample seating for 100 dinners, in the cavernous interior.

Before receiving the recent accolade, the West Kingsdown restaurant had managed to remain largely anonymous outside its fanbase of loyal supporters, who count the noted broadcaster, James Wale, amongst their number. There was only a tiny internet footprint for this 38

Kent eatery prior to making the Awards’ shortlist last November.

But Rajdani is changing. Owner Rob Khan, who enjoys a successful parallel career in publishing, has taken over the restaurant from his father and uncle and is in the process or re-engineering the business. Like many Asian restaurateurs, Rob hails from more exotic shores – the Elephant & Castle.

Like many of his fellow migrants, Khan senior arrived in London’s East End from Bangladesh to work in the rag trade. Abdul Khan was employed by former England football captain and World Cup winner, the late Bobby Moore. Twenty years ago, Abdul and nephew Suna Miah, opened Rajdani, which now proudly displays a trophy similar in size to that of the now lost, Jules Rimet Trophy, which Bobby held aloft on a certain July day in 1966.

Under Rob Khan, major investment has been made inside and out. The modern décor is stylish and simple, with subtle lighting in the many recesses. The entrance is impressive, with a large awning normally seen outside the more

grand hotel, ponds and fountains. New signage and exterior lighting make the restaurant, which is set well back from the A20 behind its large carpark, easier to locate. Being close to the M25 and M20 motorways, some diners travel from far afield to eat here. Petrol heads come in great numbers on event days at the neighbouring Brands Hatch race circuit. I was also informed that many guests come from the nearby Silverleigh Naturist Club. Although they go in disguise, suitably attired.

Rob is now turning his energies to the menu. More fish, vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dishes are under development. Although the number of dishes will be cut, with the creation of more authentic and fine dining options, with a modern gastro twist, some British curry house classics will remain.

“The menu will become much shorter, focusing on healthier, lighter dishes – but we won’t be ditching Chicken Tikka Masala – or there would be a riot,” assured Khan, adding;“We need to move with the times and cater for changing customer tastes, as they become more sophisticated.”

[food & drink ] Indeed, when I visited, head chef Jimmi Shah was back home on the sub-continent, on a culinary adventure, researching new items and enjoying a well-earned rest following an incredibly busy festive period. But in Jimmi’s absence, younger brother Jahid, his sous, deputised with aplomb.

A strong, but modestly priced, wine list includes Chablis, Pouilly Fumé, Chateau Neuf du Pape, plus Bollinger and Moet et Chandon champagnes. Beers include the authentic Indian import – Goa Premium Beer – which is gluten-free.

To finish, properly warmed brandy sent us on our way into the cold night air.

My only criticism was the unnecessary addition of heaps of salad to dishes. I’m told more creative use of garnishes are set to be rolled out. We left our teenage son suffering at home with a heavy cold and ordered him a takeaway. Despite the express request not to include the salad, needless to say there was the small white plastic bag of lettuce, tomatoes, onion and lemon slice. Our chickens enjoyed the salad and the lemon went in a gin and tonic.

I look forward to returning to try the new menu when it rolls out in February and hope the only foliage on display is the fig leaves on the nudists.

First up I enjoyed the tangy Lamb Samosa with a light crispy filo pastry, whilst my present wife opted for the succulent, moist Aliza Chicken pakora.

For mains I went for the Tandoor King Prawn with a jalapeño sauce of sour tamarind, chilli, garlic, peppers and onions which had just enough heat, without over powering the delicate flavour of the prawns.

MPW’s tasty Chicken Tikka Tarva, prepared with bay leaf, cardamom, tomatoes and coriander, had a real kick to it.

WORST DIET FADS FOR 2018?

New Year, new diet? Or have you already given up? For many of us, our willpower will have run out and we’re right back to square one. Nutritionist Emma Brown gives her verdict on some of the stranger diets that have been hitting the headlines so far this year: Deciding to lead a healthier lifestyle is a great decision – but picking one of the many fad diets isn’t a long-term solution. Naturally, everyone wants a ‘quick fix’, but it is important to look at what the consequences of any new diet might be: can you stick to it, is it expensive, and will it actually work?

following a traditional Med diet of lean meats, fruit and veg, oily fish, nuts. The authors use the ‘romance’ of a small Italian village to sell a diet; in reality following the Mediterranean way of life is, in general a positive step.

Raw food diets:

I have a simple rule: if it cuts anything out, or costs lots of money, it’s probably not much good.

Pioppi:

This is pure meal replacement dieting with little variety or imagination. The supplements are expensive, and come in large quantities so you’re making a big commitment. The range isn’t offering anything unique or extra, simply using ‘personality’ to sell an expensive product.

Pioppi is headlined as ‘changing everything you think you know about nutrition’, but it’s really just another take on the Mediterranean diet. The authors are both advocates of low carb, high fat diets, which, in isolation, I don’t support.

For me this is just unnecessary. There is no need to just eat raw food to be healthy.You will lose weight because you are limiting variety and taste, and therefore you may find you will want to eat less. It could be difficult to stick to long term, and even if you did, you could end up with some nutritional deficiencies.

8-hour diet: My concern with this one is that you can eat what you want, as long as it’s within 8 hours (and you fast for 16

hours). If you tell people they can eat what they like, without any guidance and education, then they will! Some guidelines on eating healthier options would make this diet more acceptable.

People who are very active and exercise a lot may find this difficult to stick to.

It’s a faddy way of getting people to change their eating habits but without any sound nutritional basis.

Dessert before breakfast:

Telling people it’s OK to eat dessert before breakfast gives them free license to start the day eating badly. Surely it’s better to offer sound nutritional advice that helps people plan to eat better throughout the day? For many people, starting off with a pud before the day has even begun could be a recipe for disaster!

Over claiming on weight loss makes me skeptical about this one: losing 23 pounds in 21 days sounds like a very large amount to lose, suggesting that this is a very low calorie diet, which might be OK for kick-starting weight loss, but it’s not sustainable in the long term.

Keto: This can be a very restrictive and hard to follow diet; it can be expensive and needs lots of prep. It may result in weight loss due to calorie restriction, but long-term there have been no studies looking at the effect it may have on the body. Side effects can be unpleasant.

13-hour fast: Similar to the 8-hour diet, this is just a different way of eating your calories in a window of opportunity. If no advice

This would make eating healthy food painful too, and could result in severe malnutrition issues.

easy to follow, focusing on balance and variety. Total elimination of any foods or food groups can lead to an unhealthy relationship with food. It’s simply unnecessary to ban foods, and my goal is to help people learn more about nutrients, portion size and how to balance calorie intake so they can make better food decisions.

Diets don’t have to be expensive either – it’s about finding a way of eating you enjoy, and most importantly, that you can stick with in the long term.

Tibetan herb diet: These are diet pills: they may be herbal but they are still diet pills with little or no evidence to support their use. My view is that these would be a waste of money, and not the miracle cure they report.

Of course everyone wants the magic bullet! But sadly it doesn’t exist. The phrase ‘if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is’ certainly applies when looking at claims of instant weight loss.

To me, a diet is simply an approach to eating which is sustainable and 41

Ramsgate’s Empire Room launches gourmet takeaways TIFFIN CLUB TO CUT PLASTIC POLLUTION AND PRESERVE MARINE WILDLIFE. of locally sourced ingredients, to use containers from the Indian subcontinent, hotelier James Thomas said, “I was attending a wedding in India recently and thought tiffins would be ideal solution for delivering hot meals to guests in the hotel’s 27 bedrooms.”

The critically acclaimed Empire Room restaurant at the Royal Harbour Hotel in Ramsgate in Kent, has announced a Tiffin Club takeaway scheme, aimed at reducing marine plastic pollution.

As an alternative to single use plastic containers, multi-use tiffin tins are widely used in India. They usually consist of a tower of three or four interlocking steel containers, which clamp together with a carry handle.

Tiffin tins are perfect logistically, for both room service and takeaway orders.

“Regulars to the Empire Room, disillusioned with the standards of typical fast food takeaways, have expressed an interest in options with higher culinary aspirations, like those available in London – and using tiffins is logical and environmentally friendly,” said Thomas.

“I was moved by David Attenborough’s excellent Deep Blue BBC TV documentary series, showing the damage plastics cause to the environment, and decided we should be making a contribution to the health of our seas.

Guests at the Royal Harbour Hotel regularly take sea safaris to see a local seal colony, basking on sandbanks at low tide in a national nature reserve.

Members of the Empire room’s Tiffin Club scheme will pay a nominal fee, which includes a deposit on the tiffin tins and a £5 donation to an environmental group committed to removing plastic waste from Thanet’s 7-Blue Flag beaches.

Customers simply wash and swap the tins with their next takeaway.

To launch the Club, the restaurant is looking to host a charity fund-raising dinner in aid of marine conservation and will be donating £5 Tiffin Club meal vouchers to Thanet Coast Project volunteers taking part in their annual ‘Beachwatch clean up’, as part of the Great British Beach Clean. CHIC & UNIQUE IN RAMSGATE

THE FALSTAFF REVIEW On a cold, wet and dark mid-January Saturday night it was very pleasing to see The Falstaff bustling with people and activity. This time of year is when many establishments find themselves suffering from the inevitable Christmas and New Year hangover. This certainly was not the case for The Falstaff.

Nestled centrally in Addington Street, the recently revitalised and somewhat

bohemian area of Ramsgate, The Falstaff is a boutique hotel and restaurant that has clearly found fame with many of the locals. As we entered the premises we were met with the buildings charm and character that has been meticulously retained following the restoration that took place in 2015. We were also welcomed by the new manager Chris who has recently joined the team at The Falstaff.

The bar area was encouragingly busy for such a miserable evening outside with conversations a plenty. I have always believed that a great indication of a welcoming bar is one that makes people feel comfortable and at ease, something clearly evident here. We chose to take our seats in the restaurant straight away on this occasion rather than having an initial drink in the bar but I would certainly recommend any potential diners arriving early for a drink or two. Being a gin connoisseur myself it was very pleasing to see an extensive variety of gins available, many locally sourced. There is also the newly introduced cocktail menu, Rocks, Up and Long. Here you can choose from several options in each category. A few favourites would be: Pomegranate Caipiroska: Infused Stolichnaya, lime, Sugar Whiskey sours: Makers mark, lemon, Egg White, Sugar, Angostura Naked Aviation: Tanqueray, Maraschino, Lemon Gingerbread Fizz: Stolichnaya, Lemon, Gingerbread, Soda

As we entered the restaurant area it was again busy and bustling with all the available tables full. A pleasant mix of romantic ‘date night’ couples along-side larger tables of 6 or 8, where clearly friends have chosen to meet. Again a nice discussion undertone was evident in the restaurant which is always far better than the sterile silence which is all too common elsewhere these days.

Having taken our seats we were presented with the menus. I was encouraged to see that they were relatively focused with four starters, six mains and 5 desserts. I much prefer a good strong shorter menu than being given the Encyclopaedia Britannica to choose from. As it was I selected the Chili and Salt Baby Squid followed by the Pan Seared Duck Breast. My wife chose the Warm Goat Cheese and Pine Nut Salad followed by the 8oz rump Steak.

The starters were brought to our table quite promptly and the squid was delightful. Having been cooked to perfection, the infusion of chili and salt was perfect to compliment the squid without over powering it. I was also very pleased by the portion size.There was certainly no skimping going on. My wife’s salad also looked delicious and was extremely tasteful.The addition of toasted sourdough and cherry tomatoes’ adding to the visual appeal and taste of the dish.

As we ate our starters, discussing the various flavour combinations, it was appreciated that the team continually checked to make sure everything was ok. This was happening at all of the tables and the great thing was that it was not too often or frequent but just about right. We have all been to that restaurant when you feel like the waiter is almost sitting with you as he is at your side so frequently – this was not the case here.

During the gap between our starters and mains it was easy to ask for additional drinks from the team as they are constantly moving around the restaurant area. Again something that The Falstaff seems to have perfected, waiting staff that seem invisible but are always there when you want or need someone.

The main courses were just as visually stimulating as the starters. My Pan Fried Duck Breast was cooked to perfection, pink but with a crisp skin.

My wife’s steak was delivered to the table on a traditional chopping board and again was cooked to perfection.

Both the Duck and Steak were a joy to eat and extremely flavoursome. The spring onion mash that came with the duck was extremely good and the triple cooked chips that accompanied the steak were to die for…

After such a great meal it was difficult to justify a desert but with both myself and my wife managed it. The salted chocolate tart was rich, smooth and luxurious and served with a silky vanilla pod ice cream. I had the Affofato, silky ice cream with espresso.

Now feeling completely full I could have easily gone for a lay down in one of the 8 luxurious en-suite bedrooms available at The Falstaff, but living close by it was a case of braving the cold and benefiting from the brisk walk home.

Allowing that we had a very enjoyable evening in the middle of winter The Falstaff will become more and more popular as we move towards the summer months and the renowned Addington Street Summer Fair. If you want to experience all that The Falstaff has to offer I would highly recommend booking as soon as possible…

RICHARD PHILLIPS With an early restaurant career starting off at London's famous Savoy Hotel, going on to work alongside the likes of the Roux Brothers at Le Gavroche and then becoming Head Chef for Marco Pierre White at The Criterion, Mirabelle and Les Saveurs, it's no wonder Richard Phillips had his own Michelin starred restaurant by the age of 29.

BY RICHARD PHILLIPS INGREDIENTS FOR THE PASTRY (SERVES 4)  320G PLAIN FLOUR  225G COLD BUTTER  110G ICING SUGAR  3 EGG YOLKS FOR THE FILLING  6 RUBENS APPLES, PEELED, CORED AND CUT INTO HALVES (TURN THE EDGES DOWN)  100G CASTER SUGAR  100G BUTTER  80G MINCE PIE MINCEMEAT  2 X STAR ANISE  1 X VANILLA POD TO SERVE KENTISH COBNUT ICE CREAM

Method 1. F irst, make the pastry. In a food processor, mix the flour, butter and icing sugar just until they resemble breadcrumbs. Add the egg yolks. Using the pulse button, mix until it comes together to form a dough.

6. R oll the pastry approx. 1cm thick and cut out a circle the same diameter as the pan, use a plate as a guide.

2. R emove the dough from the mixing bowl and divide into two pieces.Wrap in cling film and put in the fridge to chill for at least an hour, preferably overnight

8. P eirce a few small holes in the top to let the steam escape while cooking

3. Slice the butter 2mm thick and line the bottom of a thick bottom pan (6-8” in diameter), sprinkle the sugar evenly over the top.

4. Add the star anise, split vanilla pod (seeds only) and then the mincemeat.

7. P ut the pastry lid on the top of the tart, and tuck in the sides

9. H eat the tart until the sugar and butter start to caramelise and turns a golden brown.Then bake in the oven for 1015mins at 200c until the puff pastry is golden brown 10. When ready turn out tart tatin onto a serving dish and finish with a spoon of cobnut ice cream

THE KING’S SCHOOL

BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE

The King’s School in Canterbury has been educating young people for fourteen centuries.

It has always sought ways to enhance and modernise its provision.

Currently planning a £50 million building programme, the most ambitious level of investment being undertaken by a UK Independent school.

The recently acquired Victorian Malthouse building, located close to the main school campus, is being transformed into a stunning Performing Arts Centre comprising a 350-seat theatre complete with orchestra pit, dance and drama studios, bar and dining facilities.

This state of the art school facility will also be available for community use.

Unanimously backed by Canterbury City Council, especially with the reinstatement of some of its original architectural features, Councillor Ian Thomas commented “It’s a superb use of the site which will bring it back to life.”

Alongside the Malthouse theatre a brand new International College is being constructed, which will join the family of King’s Schools.Welcoming pupils aged 11-16 from all over the world for whom English is not their first language, the International College will be a truly global community. A single purposebuilt unit, the building will be a striking mixture of weathered concrete and glass intended to preserve the gentle industrial feel of the site.

the original ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ car, is a new Day House for pupils aged 13-18. Designed by award winning London architects Walters & Cohen, the reconfigured and extended former auto works building is set to provide contemporary areas for both study and leisure activities within easy reach of the Precincts of Canterbury Cathedral where the main school buildings are housed.

The Mint Yard, an historic area within the Cathedral Precincts, will host a new Science centre. It is due to open in 2020 and purposefully designed to be in keeping with its beautiful architectural surroundings. Alongside seven new Physics laboratories, the development will deliver a dedicated science research space, an auditorium, and refurbished Biology and Chemistry laboratories. It is anticipated that the new and improved facilities will enable the school to extend their partnership activities with local state schools, adding to the already successful Saturday Smarties science masterclasses and Community Science Day. Wedding season has started in earnest so I decided to have a chat with my friend Nikki Groom, from Thanetian Weddings and Events, about how traditions have changed since the 80’s and the 90’s when I got married!

Remember the Italian tradition of 5 sugared almonds, given to the ladies of the wedding as a token of the bride and grooms appreciation?

Each almond has its own individual meaning of health, happiness, wealth, fertility and long Life. However, more recently the bride and groom prefer something more personalised such as M&M’s with the date of the wedding or perhaps with their names. Other gifts include homemade jam and honey with labels showing dates and names, sloe gin, tea bags, lipsticks (in the same colour theme as the wedding) and cigars.

Another change has been to the top table. Usually occupied by the Bride and Groom, their parents, the best man and maid of honour and maybe a grandparent we now often see a table for two amongst the guests called a ‘Sweetheart Table’. Our family situations have changed dramatically in recent years and sometimes it’s not possible to keep mums and dads and step-parents happy. Other contemporary seating arrangements which have increased in popularity include the ‘cabaret style’, where the guests are seated at round tables with 82

the happy couple seated amongst them, and the ‘horseshoe’, where guests sit in a U-shape all facing one another.

Nikki mentioned that lots of brides now like to walk down the aisle by themselves or with their dad and stepdad, children or even their mum.

Again, with family differences these options are sometimes easier.

Colours and design have also changed with years and have in fact gone full circle. 80’s fashions saw peach, lemon, baby blue and pink at the top of the list . In the 90’s it was very much claret, burgundy and deep greens and floral was very much ‘en vogue’. From the turn of the 21st century onwards the colours that followed were navy blue, Cadburys purple, and fuchsia.

The Vintage look became popular and we once again saw the return of peach, lemon, baby blues and pink combined with hessian and lace wicker and wire.

In 2018 the trends seems to have turned to opulent elegance, almost a touch of the 70’s with sparkle, blush pink, nude and champagne.

location and type of package. Nikki, from Thanetion, offers a photographer, venue styling, flowers, wedding cake, hair and make up for just £2195. This leaves only the venue, catering and entertainment choices to be made.

Popular ideas and ways of saving money could be a Twilight Wedding, a short service followed by food (buffet, barbeque) and entertainment or a Monday/Midweek wedding, these are less formal and easier for children and older guests to attend and enjoy.

Instead of a guest book some lovely ideas include a picture frame or canvas where the guests can add their finger print, a tree of wishes, a picture of the bride and groom with space for everyone to sign their name and carved hearts that can be written on and placed in a box.

[weddings ] Finally we chatted about the giving of gifts. As we know many couples are now living together before marriage and therefore have much of what they need. The old tradition of ‘a gift table’ has changed and vouchers and money are top of the list giving the couple choice and ways of paying for the wedding and the honeymoon. Nikki agreed that the wedding list was now

quite dated but we’d both love to see it back as there are so many things we’d like to have but would never get round to buying or could not afford. With many stunning hairstyle options, it can be difficult to choose just one.

Here are a few things you should look out for.

The Bride’s hair should complement the gown and whether you want to go for more of a ‘boho’ look or more of a chic, classic style you must incorporate the dress into the picture.

For classic gowns with a bateau or portrait neckline, try a low bun style.

With a high neckline, you’ll want to keep your hair away from your face and off of your neck. Half up half down

styles go with light and airy designs with plenty of lace or tulle. If you wish to have accessories added then you must consult with your stylist on the type and placement.

Your wedding day is probably not the best time to try anything too drastic as you’ll have the photographs forever.

Try and stay to a classic, timeless hair style, as trends tend to come and go.

Your hairstyle has the power to define your entire look, so you want it to compliment your personality, not someone else’s.

Always remember to do a trial with your chosen stylist - from there you can build the perfect style sto suit you.

Collect some pictures of at least 4 bridal hair pictures and maybe pick up some accessories, bearing in mind that you have to wear them for a long time in the day, so make sure there are not too many clips or teeth that might feel uncomfortable.

Much of the year leading up to your big day is consumed with thoughts of dress fittings, venue meetings and food tastings. Hair and skin prep often gets overlooked, but the earlier you start thinking about it, the more fresh and flawless you’ll look in the spotlight.

Alexandra Roberts, Owner at bridal hair and make up company Make Me Sparkle takes us through the perfect prep.

12 MONTHS TO GO….

Our mothers have been telling us for years…it’s never too early to practise a good skin care regime and this really is key. Even if all you manage is a cleanse, tone and moisturise once a day, you’ll be doing yourself huge favours. However take particular care of your eye area it’s very delicate. And it’s not a myth… cucumber slices really do deputy and smooth the skin!

Chapped lips are often an issue that is rarely noted until someone applies lipstick, which won’t apply smoothly. A lip balm rich in Vitamin E is your new best friend. Take it everywhere and start applying regularly.

Exfoliation is great, but don’t overdo it.

Two to three times a week is ample.

A little tip - shampoo your make up brushes regularly, otherwise yu could be wiping acne causing bacteria back on to your face.

Drink plenty of water – the skin on our face needs to remain hydrated for a healthy glow. And start to think about what you are eating…plenty of fruit, vegetables and wholegrains will start to 92

Develop a brow shape you are happy with. In my opinion, more flattering styles nod to the natural shape of the brow.

Consider your lashes. Strip or ‘weekend’ lashes that can be applied on the day are considerably cheaper (make sure the glue is waterproof!) but you might prefer the more natural looking semi permanent lash extensions that can last up to six to eight weeks - ideal if you are planing a honeymoon as they don’t require mascara.

Whilst the pale skinned English rose look is equally appealing, many brides opt for a sun kissed glow. Whether it’s from a bottle or a booth, experiment

and get the shade just right. Exfoliate directly before application and around three days after to avoid streaks. Be wary of temporary bronzers that may transfer on to a white dress.

TWO WEEKS TO GO…

If you want a winning smile on your big day, consider having your teeth professionally cleaned to remove surface stains and plaque. Over the counter whitening treatments can also help.

Visit the hairdressers. Book in for a Keratin treatment. This can really help with flyaway fizziness.

Get a trim – despite what the bottles say there really is no other treatment for split ends! If you are wearing your hair mostly down on the day, start using deep conditioning treatments every four or five days, skip this if you are planning on an up do as dryer hair styles better.

Have your colour touched up. There’s enough time for it to settle, but any sooner and you’ll need your roots doing again.

If you are using extensions on the day, now’s the time to have them colour matched.

ONE WEEK TO GO…

Avoid salty foods and excessive carbs

and don’t overdo the exercise - this is a common cause of water retention and puffy eyes.

THREE DAYS TO GO…

Now for pre-wedding waxing. Don’t leave it any later in case of redness and irritation. Calming cream immediately after will also help.

If time and budget allow, take yourself off for a facial. Not only will this improve your glow, it will also destress!

While you are at it, get yourself a manicure and pedicure.

ONE DAY TO GO!

How do you choose your wedding photographer? Who do you trust? What will you get for your money? How to ensure quality? Here are 3 tips from Light & Imagination Photography to avoid disappointment when it comes to your wedding photos.

1. G et a professional if you want guaranteed results We hear it all the time: disposable cameras on tables, family members and friends with phones or ‘good cameras’.

Unfortunately, many couples end up disappointed and don’t always get the savings either. ‘I wish I’d invested in a photographer; if I did it all over again that’s where my money would go’, many brides say.

The truth is: disposable camera costs add up and you won’t get many good shots but still pay for the whole film to be developed. In the right hands, smartphones can produce decent images if there is plenty of light (rarely the case at ceremonies or receptions).

However you will struggle to get any quality prints and the smartphone snappers will be in your face all day.

Family members and friends are there for a reason, to enjoy your wedding day with you. Being a wedding photographer is a huge responsibility and a full-on job and we, the professionals, are there to ensure we don’t miss any moments.

2. I t is you, not your photographer, who should dictate the style and timings for photos Beware of artistic vanity. The images you end up with should reflect your

desires, personality and style, and, while the photographer will hopefully add their creative genius to deliver above your expectations, they shouldn’t impose their own style on you. It is our ethos at Light and Imagination that we will give you exactly what you want, and better.

Equally, a good photographer will be versed and competent in shooting to any style, so beware of photographers who only seem to deliver one style of images and editing.Your photographer should also advise you about best times to do outdoor photos for example, but not dictate the order of play and certainly not take you away from the party for unnecessarily long periods of time.

3. B e clear on what you get and have it written in a contract Be clear about what’s included in your package: how many consecutive hours will the photographer cover?

How much will you need to pay for additional hours, and what happens if things run late? Will there be a second photographer / assistant on the day? At Light & Imagination we offer two photographers as standard so we capture twice as many angles and moments, at no extra cost.

The Ravenscliff suite, which also offers relaxed but formal dinners or lunches as well as evening entertainment, such as DJs or live bands and dancing, is the bigger of the suites, and can easily seat 130 guests.

“We really look forward to wedding days as it gives us the opportunity to really deliver as a team. The Menus we have created have proved really popular, however, because all my team are fully trained chefs, menus can be changed or altered to suit our client’s requirements” said John.

As noted above, the Ravenscliff is licensed for DJs and bands and these can either be booked for you or you can peruse a list of recommended artists who have performed at previous functions at The Pegwell.

The Clifton Suite

The smaller of the Hotel’s two suites is located one floor above sea level.With the recent addition of a fantastic new balcony, you will be able to admire the breath-taking views out to sea.

As a professional florist, I get asked many questions by brides & grooms usually a year before their big day, such as, “shall I give everyone a button hole?” to “do I leave the pew ends at the church? or can I reuse them at the reception venue? I always encourage brides & grooms alike to relax & realise that this is 2018 and there is no strict protocol any longer. Planning your wedding should be an exciting time bringing people together.

In these modern times, we have free reign to pretty much have any flower in almost any colour or shape and can choose to have only one bouquet or ten thousand stems.

If you or your loved ones are planning a wedding for 2018/19 then relax and don’t feel like you need to visit the library and rent out “wedding planning for idiots” book or google “who has which flowers at a wedding?!”

9. O nce you have decided exactly what you want & are happy with the quote, we offer a simple payment scheme. Split the total cost equally between how many months are remaining & PAY OFF TOTALLY INTEREST FREE. This will allow you to budget for your flowers.

Ask other suppliers if they also offer this as it will make the

paying of the wedding much easier in bite sized pieces 10. L astly, remember in the back of your mind that this is a once in a lifetime, special day, flowers aren’t cheap and that if you want beauty & perfection then choose only the best your budget will allow.
