You may remember meeting the Pagliaras as the subjects of our first Cove Living cover story in June 2016. But now Dana is on her own enjoying the sport she loves so much...rowing. Way to go, Dana!

It is wonderful to see the community opening up once again and people out and about providing lots of interesting news for you to read in this issue. The Oyster Bay Main Street Association is in full bloom with their Hanging Baskets campaign but needs your support. They are also kicking off Dancing in the Street once again in July. Join in the fun and dance to your favorite tunes.

The CSH Ed Foundation is golfing. The Parents Association planned a fun spring event for kids at East Woods School. And... we are planning a garden party to be held in September!

We would like to send a HUGE congrats to all our Cove Living graduates this month. It is such a special time for grads of all ages. They have certainly earned extra kudos considering the challenges this last year has brought their way. But in spite of it all...they have excelled. We are so proud of you!

Camp East Woods Summer is my favorite season. During the summer I enjoy going to camp. Right here in Oyster Bay Cove, we have an amazing camp called Camp East Woods. I sat down with Camp Director Kate Bedard and asked her some questions to learn more about Camp East Woods. I go to school at East Woods but I’ve never gone to the camp. It sounds like it is a lot of fun!

Eddie Mercier: How many campers are enrolled for the summer?

Kate Bedard: Camp East Woods will welcome over 300 campers to the East Woods School Campus this summer.

EM: What are the days and times for camp?

KB: Camp runs from June 28 through August 6, Monday–Friday, 9:00 am–3:00 pm with extended day options available including before and aftercare.

EM: What are the ages of the campers?

KB: We have campers ages 18 months up until 14 years old. We also have Junior Counselors. Campers are grouped by their school age, which grade they are entering in the fall, so many campers are grouped with friends from their schools.

EM: What kind of activities will the campers be doing?

KB: Swim, playground, slip ‘n slide, outdoor games, nature walks, yoga, music, sports, art, crafts, ukulele, digital media, STEAM, geocaching, obstacle courses, and more!

EM: Are you excited about the pool? Will the campers have swim lessons?

KB: Yes! The campers receive daily instructional swim along with free swim time. Fridays are often designated “pool party” days. One of my favorite compliments we receive from parents is that their children learned to swim at Camp East Woods. We are fortunate to have such a strong swim program.

EM: Is there anything new at camp for this summer?

KB: Yes! We have a new playground!

EM: How long have you been the Camp director?

KB: I’ve been Director of Camp East Woods for five years.

EM: What are you most excited about?

KB: Bringing back the magic of summer camp after a challenging year. Kids more than ever need the opportunity to be together, in the outdoors, and play.

The days are filled with fun activities that help build campers’ confidence, try something new, and make new friends.

EM: Anything else you can tell me about the camp?

KB: We are fortunate at Camp that our group leaders and head specialists are teachers during the school year. They are truly what makes Camp East Woods the special, fun, and safe place that it is.

I hope you enjoyed learning about Camp East Woods and think about going to a camp like this one. Have a great summer!

He lives in Oyster Bay Cove with his mom and dad, his two older brothers, and his dog, Ursa. Eddie likes to ski, play lacrosse, and traveling with his family. In Eddie’s free time he enjoys drawing, hanging out with his friends and family, and playing with his dog.

Pregnancy Basics: Mother Nature is often your best ally

For as long as we have been in existence, we have been born.

I know this may come as an epiphany to some, but procreation has been around well before Google, computers, books, and medical schools. The fact is, like all living beings, we have been made to reproduce and make life happen. And all this has been happening, more or less without pause, for the past 200,000+ years at least for us Homo sapiens. About 10–20% of human pregnancies will naturally end up with a miscarriage, most at a very early stage. Most of these miscarriages are inevitable, caused by chromosomal and genetic factors which, as of yet, are unpreventable.

As for the other 80–90%, the vast majority will end up with the birth of a healthy cute newborn. So why does a pregnant woman need a person like yours truly?

People like me exist mainly for the minority of pregnancies which become “complicated.” After all, throughout history and pre-history, we have been born in caves, forests, deserts, and on the side of the LIE without any assistance from a Board-Certified OBGYN. But here and there, the Board-Certified OBGYN can actually turn the course of a pregnancy destined for failure towards a healthy birth for both the mother and the newborn. Complications, such as poor fetal growth, preterm labor, infections, recurrent pregnancy loss, toxemia of pregnancy, and myriad other issues, including maternal health concerns, can be addressed and dealt with. All this has resulted in a tremendous decrease in the rate of maternal and fetal deaths and other poor outcomes.

However, that being said, I am of the strong belief that pregnancy is not a disease, and too much intervention, especially unnecessary ones, which I see way too often, may, in fact, lead to worse outcomes than if the pregnancy was left alone. Within our own community, on a daily basis, I see pregnancies that have been “manipulated” excessively by the medical caregivers, leading to much worse outcomes than if we had just left things to mother nature. And even more so, our mothers-to-be are subjected to lots of needless anxiety and mental anguish because of this “medicalization of pregnancy.” It’s as though our “providers” are not satisfied with the words, “You’re all good, see you in a few weeks.” Instead of calming down the already anxious mother, more salt is poured on the wound.

And, yes, our mothers are “wounded.” Wounded by the internet, social media, and myriad other “resources,” which are supposed to “help.” Yet these resources often do not help. Sometimes they actually cause more harm than good. Emotional and mental harm. Your best resource is your physician. Bring up your concerns, but do not make your pregnancy complicated.

Remember, you’re not sick, just pregnant. A beautiful thing. And most beautiful things in life are not complicated.

As someone who has lived her entire life within Oyster Bay Cove, the idea of living somewhere else for an extent of time truly is daunting. However, when I was offered the opportunity this past winter to live all the way down the coast in Florida, I felt like I had to take it!

As some may know, I am an avid horseback rider and have been for most of my life. With the sport comes a great deal of traveling, so I’m used to not being home for weeks at a time. But, at least for me, living on the other side of the country for the better part of three months seemed like a huge challenge. Nonetheless, I felt as though I needed to take this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and run with it – a decision that would allow me an incredible experience that I will never forget!

Just after New Years, I traveled down to Wellington, FL, to begin my stay. In a normal, pre-COVID world, this entire situation would have never been possible – I would have been able to attend school regularly if I was in Florida, and it would be simply impossible to keep up with my course load. However, since hybrid and online learning has become the new normal, I was able to make this trip while still attending my daily classes as per usual. My days were jam-packed. I woke up early to ride a horse before school even started, and then continued to ride others during my free periods and lunch breaks. By the time the school day was over, I went home to study and complete my homework before falling asleep faster than can be imagined.

Though my days were long and tiring, the memories I made and the learning opportunities I had outweighed any cons. COVID protocols undoubtedly limited socialization and normal human interaction, but even so I was able to make new friends, talk to people from around the country doing school remotely as well and work on my riding skills daily without much time constraint in picture-perfect weather conditions. Alongside all of that, though, my favorite part of the experience was the amount of

competition I was able to do over the season.

Located just next door to one of the largest horse-competition venues in America, I was able to show off my skills and hone my techniques weekly in rigorous competition against other advanced competitors.

Though this trip seemed terrifying at first, by the end of my three-month stay I was dreading saying goodbye.

Despite this, when I touched down in Oyster Bay after all that time, I was overjoyed to be home and ready for new adventures.

Isabel Szarfarc is a rising senior at Portledge School in Locust Valley and has been a resident of Oyster Bay Cove for her entire life. She is a lover of animals, books, writing, and an avid fan of Disney films. She is so excited to be writing for Cove Living and is thrilled to be sharing her adventures with her community.

Margaux Hello! My name is Margaux (pronounced Margo), and I am a beautiful black and brown Gordon Setter.

If you don’t know what that is, it means that I’m basically a close cousin of the Irish Setter, a more commonly known breed. I have long, silky black hair and floppy ears. Despite my innocent appearance, I was a mischievous puppy.

deserve. She didn’t appreciate this nearly as much as she should have, but now she knows that I need to be petted! Another fantastic source of attention for me is my best feline friend, Edward. I know dogs and cats are supposed to be enemies, but Edward is the best older brother ever. We spend so much time together, and he teaches me useful tricks, like how to be perfectly aloof in order to make my family pay more attention to me. And in case you were concerned, I have friends that are dogs as well. Roxy, the dachshund, from puppy training is awesome! Yes, what initially drew me to her is that she looks a bit like a cat, but now I like her just for her doggy self. She’s teaching me how to act more like a dog.

Recently, I’ve tried to branch out and befriend the many birds that I see living around my house. I mean, they must be there to meet me. Right? I think that they’re pretty shy though…whenever I approach them, they run away! I know I can be intimidating, but I think that that reaction is a little bit excessive. I spend a lot of time trying to connect with my feathered soon-to-be friends, and know that I will succeed someday! Edward, the cat, seems to like them very much, and he catches up with them all the time!

I know I’ve seen him giving them a lift in his mouth more than once. Speaking of birds, I think I see a few of my buddies now! I have to go.

Hoping to add some normalcy for the students, the Parents Association hired Party Animals NY to set up an inflatable obstacle course, inflatable slide, and some jumbo lawn games followed by Mister Softee providing the kids with their ice cream favorites.

Beautiful weather and special friends made for an enjoyable day for all.

Are you looking to add to your family? Perhaps a new cat, dog, bird, iguana, or snake? There are a lot of homeless pets out there that need you but it isn’t always as easy as you might think to find the right fit.

I have spent countless hours on the phone and the internet locating pets for friends. To be perfectly honest I haven’t actually located any snakes other than the one slithering under my parked car. After I crawled under the car to make sure that I didn’t run it over, I realized that they might not be the best pets.

• Even a free dog or cat is very expensive so start looking for a second job. Only kidding but food and vet bills quickly add up.

• Volunteer to work in a shelter. It’s rewarding and you will be in a good position for your own adoption.

• If you are looking for a purebred pet (nothing wrong with this) plan to spend a lot of time on the internet and phone. Good breeders often have long waits. You may have to travel.

• Beware of scams. Low prices for beautiful animals and requests for money in advance usually are clues that something is very fake. Do your research and detective work!

• Call vets in your neighborhood. They know reputable breeders and often put clients together with pets needing homes.

Sometimes you have to go to great lengths to find a furry friend.

Raisinette’s owner slept overnight in a parking lot to be first in line at a shelter to adopt an advertised puppy. They happily lived together for 16 years.

A little time and patience are worth it.

You’ll get paid back in the first five minutes.

• Know the rules and follow them.

Most shelters require you to take two kittens. You better have a safe place for them – be prepared for a home visit.

THE OSPREY

One of the most special “sights” that has grasped my eye as I walk/ cycle through The Cove is that of the Osprey. I watch with wonder the soaring flight of this majestic raptor. Sometimes carrying a large twig, just one of many building materials used in forming its classic broad and deep nest. Or holding in its strong talons a fish, still alive, as it carries this soon-to-be meal to either a solitary location for dining or to its nest to feed its partner.

Ospreys have a long history here on Long Island. They generally mate for life and have lifespans that typically last 7–10 years.

They are basically the only birds of prey whose diet consists only of fish, and thus they tend to build their nests near the water to be close to the food supply. These nests tend to be built high up in dead trees, utility poles, or on man-made “nest platforms.” Their eyes have been calculated to be approximately 60 times more

powerful and sophisticated than that of humans.

In 1975, only about 11 nesting pairs of Ospreys were left on Long Island. The main culprit: the pesticide DDT. During the 1940s, DDT was used widely to combat malaria, typhus, and other insect-borne human diseases, and used for insect control in crop/ livestock production, institutions, homes, and gardens. It was not unusual to literally spray humans directly with the substance for “protective” reasons. Unfortunately, the dangers to humans (as a carcinogen and a cause of Parkinson’s disease) were unknown then, as well as the threat to animals. For the Osprey, the danger came as a result of DDT being used widely near the water, ultimately winding up absorbed by fish, which were then eaten by the Osprey. The effect on the female Osprey was to produce eggs with thin, weak shells which then became crushed as the female incubated them.

Thanks to public awareness raised by Rachel Carson’s 1962 book, The Silent Spring, and the tireless efforts of the Environmental Defense Fund, the use of DDT was finally banned by the Federal government in 1972.

Since then, Ospreys have increased in number. On Long Island, PSEG Long Island has constructed and maintained nest platforms, some of which are equipped with cameras offering us fascinating glimpses into Osprey behavior.

Pasta Olive Pesto resident recipe

Prep Time: 5 minutes Cook Time: 10 minutes Total Time: 15 minutes Yield: 3 to 4

Ingredients • 8 ounces dried store-bought or homemade pasta • 2 teaspoons olive oil • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs • Olive pesto • ½ cup packed fresh basil • ½ cup packed fresh flat-leaf parsley • 1 clove garlic • ¼ cup pitted kalamata olives • ¼ cup sun-dried tomatoes • 3 tablespoons lemon juice • ¼ cup olive oil • 2 tablespoons chopped or sliced almonds

Directions 1. Prepare pasta according to directions. Drain, reserving some of the pasta water, and place pasta in a bowl or return to pot.

2. While pasta is cooking, pulse the basil, parsley, and garlic in a food processor until minced. Add in the olives, tomatoes, lemon juice, olive oil, and almonds. Continue until pesto is well combined, adding a bit more olive oil (or pasta water) if needed to pulse everything together.

3. Add to pasta and toss, adding a splash or two of pasta water until the pasta is coated.

4. In a dry skillet over medium heat, toast breadcrumbs in olive oil until lightly browning. Sprinkle on top of pasta and serve with extra herbs for garnish.

Laura and her husband James live in the Cove. They have two grown daughters and three young grandchildren. When not whipping up the next delicious recipe, they enjoy rides on their Harleys, beach time with family out east, and travel.

Ospreys migrate South for the winter, sometimes going as far as the Amazon, but they return to the same nest, and same partner, each March to prepare the nest and produce offspring to carry on their majestic traditions. Folklore holds that the Ospreys are an omen of success and that they dive deeply into the pools of creativity and draw forth what they need to move forward.

For resident Dana Pagliara, life is but a dream. Dana is a master rower who sparked her love of the sport as a rower for the Women’s team at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill 35 years ago, and a longtime proponent of what is most likely the oldest sport in America. She is zealous about the spirit of community and the sport of rowing and its inclusion in middle school and high school sports.

So much so that when a serendipitous opportunity to form a non-profit rowing club presented itself, she and a handful of like-minded enthusiasts swept in to meet the challenge of establishing Oyster Bay Community Rowing (OBCR).

preppy pastime. Ivy League schools still have crew teams, but so do many middle schools and high schools in both urban and suburban communities. Guess what? Rowing is for everyone. It’s hard work. Although it can be taken up at any reasonable age as a leisure sport, there is no slacking in rowing. It pays off in total body exercise that uses every muscle, whether on the water, in a shell, or training on the erg machine at home or in the gym. As part of a crew, rowing fosters camaraderie, teamwork, leadership skills, and community. It represents something more significant than one’s personal concerns and gain.

So how did the OBCR come about? Put simply—retirement—the retirement of Ed Klobus. The Klobus family founded Syosset Rowing in 2011. They oversaw seven years of successful programs for junior rowers. “When Ed wanted to retire, we stepped in and purchased the assets of the Syosset Rowing club and turned those resources into a non-profit 501(c)3 organization,” says Dana. OBCR has been operating at Centre Island Beach in Bayville ever since with its dedicated volunteer board of directors who have years of experience in rowing and coaching. As for the legacy of the Syosset crew team, they continue under the management of OBCR. “Syosset Rowing remains at Syosset High School under our auspices,” says Dana.

OBCR has put focus on the middle school and high school track, wooing athletes and increasing membership from a handful of rowers to upwards of 70 juniors and 10 masters, with many more expected now that pandemic mandates have lifted. The school district is also working toward transforming rowing into a Varsity sport. Dana points out that Oyster Bay High School and Friends Academy are signed on this year to run teams under the OBCR umbrella, and may choose this fall to row under their own high school banners scholastically when regattas offer that option again.

Due to a lot of fundraising work since then, they’ve bolstered

equipment and staff. Program Director and Trustee Kevin Kelley is the primary force leading the coaching team who are on-site every day executing the training. He rowed as a member of the Fordham Men’s Crew Team and has coached since 2009 taking several crews to various state and national appearances. “Kevin works closely with our experienced lead coaches to create the programming for our middle school, high school, U23 collegiate, and masters adult offerings that makes the club successful,” says Dana. “The reason we got started in the first place is that we all love the sport. Students from different abilities can try something new and get into the spirit of this sport.” OBCR has a little bit of everything for anyone interested. Sundays are very active with adults at the club. “As we grow and work with the town, we encourage as many people as possible to enjoy what we do.”

There are teams solely dedicated to representing their school banner. On the flipside, kids from different schools throughout Long Island can row under OBCR. During COVID, many students did just that. They rowed for OBCR, and thankfully so, because their school sports shut down. “We were able to operate as a non-profit controlling protocol, abiding by state guidelines, and keeping people in their seats and safe. We never had to close,” Dana asserts. OBCR did pivot to restrict how they approached the program, but being flexible helped them offer a spot on the water for whoever asked. “We were lucky to keep people employed and survive as a community club where many did not.”

Part of Paglaria’s vision is to develop the scholastic side of the sport. “There is a desire to see what we can do,” she says.

Collegiate rowers are trickling back from universities for the summertime. They want to stay fit and keep rowing. “Because we managed the COVID crisis, we know how to handle protocols whereas other clubs may not. There is definitely an increased interest.” Collegiate rowing is strong in the US. Crew can help students get into colleges looking for well-rounded students to succeed at levels of higher learning. And, the good news for women, scholarship opportunities favor strong women rowers.

OBCR supports all forms of rowing—singles, doubles, fours, and eights. Families are very dedicated and supportive financially.

Before the pandemic, parents came to the regattas and represented for their athlete while cheering on the teams. The club attended its first regatta (since COVID emerged) at the New York State Championships in Saratoga this May. “We’ll see how regattas play out in the future. In the meantime, spectators can watch through live-streaming—the new normal,” says Dana.

Stepping back, an introduction to Dana was in June of 2016. Cove Living was launching its inaugural cover featuring the Pagliara family. The whole family rows—sons Alessandro and Marco, and, every so often, husband Louis. Back then, Louis was just dipping his toes into the rowing waters. At the time, Dana was board member and treasurer at Sagamore Rowing. Her story now presents a new chapter. One that finds her proudly carrying the title and responsibilities as President of OBCR.

For those that cherish the sport, rowing back to the boatyard on a quiet evening with the sun setting on the horizon never gets tired.

The OBCR board is committed to being on the water. A passion that inspires them to lead the club forward. “Covid was a lonely place for so many people,” Dana states. “Athletics and the aspect of supporting each other goes to show that the best thing a person can do is be part of something greater than themselves.”

Back in the Swing of Things The Cold Spring Harbor Ed Foundation Golf & Tennis Outing After a long year of canceled events and staying at home, The Cold Spring Harbor Educational Foundation happily hosted their first Golf & Tennis Outing on Monday, May 24. This year’s fundraiser was a welcomed step back into normalcy for all who attended as they shared laughs, participated in golf and tennis tournaments, and enjoyed cocktails and dinner.

The success of the outing was in large part due to the generosity of corporate and family sponsors, making the inaugural event a triumph and doubling the targeted fundraising goal set by The Foundation.

The Ed Foundation is a non-profit group that raises money for initiatives and grants for Cold Spring Harbor Schools. Chloe Henning, current president of The Foundation commented “The excitement and support surrounding our first outing was amazing!”

Last year, The Foundation’s main fundraiser was scheduled for the same week the COVID-19 pandemic shut everything down. Unsure of what the year would look like, The Foundation Board needed to come up with an event that would make people feel comfortable and eager to participate.

“We thought that an outing would be a great way to have the community come together safely while having fun and raising money for a great cause,” said Henning. “But we had no idea what an extraordinary turnout we would have.”

And what a turn out it was. Within one day the tennis event was sold out, prompting The Foundation to add an additional event, which also sold out. Golf foursomes filled up and cocktail tickets sold out. The event was attended by close to 200 people, mostly local families.

The Outing was hosted at the Mill River Country Club. Guests not only enjoyed some fabulous weather but were treated to gift bags and complimentary raffles all while enjoying some delicious food and drink. “We really wanted everyone to come out and have a good time,” Henning emphasized. “We knew this was going to be the first time out for a lot of people and wanted to make sure that it was a great way to kick off getting back to normal.”

It seems as though The Foundation’s fundraising goal was not the only thing met, as many attendees expressed their enjoyment of that day. “Every time someone tells us how much fun they had it makes us feel that much more successful!”

Will this become an annual event? “So many people have already asked if we will be doing this again,” said Henning. If you missed this year’s event, don’t worry. The Foundation will be hosting another Outing next year. “We can’t wait to see everyone there!”

Put on your dancing shoes! The Oyster Bay Main Street Association is excited to announce the return of “Dancing in the Street,” a series of free dance evenings on the streets of historic, charming Oyster Bay. After more than a year of trying to exercise in front of the TV on the living room rug, it’s time to get outdoors and “cut a rug” on the local streets! We will, of course, be complying with CDC and New York State guidelines. Social distancing and mask-wearing will be required and enforced for everyone’s safety and enjoyment.

Following the record-breaking success of previous years’ “Dancing in the Street,” OBMSA welcomes dancers of all ages, skills, and styles — even those with two left feet— to join us for delightful get-togethers under the stars.

Again this year, due to popular demand, “Dancing” has been extended into the first two Fridays in August. Mark your calendars now for the five Fridays in July: July 2, July 9, July 16, July 23, and July 30. And then add August 6 and August 13.

Music and dance instruction will be provided by Louis del Prete, one of Long Island’s most popular DJs/Dancers. All steps are geared for singles and couples alike. We are thrilled to have him back, showcasing his talent as a dancer, teacher, musician, and singer. He will play all types of music from the 1940s right up to today’s favorites, including Latin rhythm, ballroom, group party routines, and, of course, any requests.

“Dancing in the Street” is one of the community building/ downtown revitalization efforts organized by the Oyster Bay Main Street Association (OBMSA).
