In 1999, the Carl Foreman Award For Most Promising Newcomer In British Film was introduced into the Awards to recognise the behind-the-scenes British talents who were taking a creative lead for the first time. This morphed in 2002 into the Carl Foreman Award For Special Achievement By A British Director, Writer Or Producer In Their First Feature Film before changing its name again to the current Outstanding Debut award.
