Burnie Arts Live 2024 Welcome Join us as we unveil stage 1 of our major redevelopment from 1st December 2023. A visit to the Burnie Arts Centre now takes you through part of the new and spectacular Long Room that includes some of our fresh permanent displays featuring ‘Burnie Stories’ drawn from objects and images in our extensive art and museum collections.

Our 2024 performing arts program is bigger than ever with so much to see and experience for all ages and interests including contemporary and classical concerts, big band jazz and an opportunity to dress up and learn swing dancing, quality drama, contemporary dance, special shows for children in every school holiday, a new comedy festival and affordable lunchtime concerts. Add to all this a dash of Johnny Cash and a Taste of Ireland and there’s no excuse not to make your arts centre a regular destination in 2024!

American Idiot follows the exhilarating journey of a new generation of young Americans, led by friends Johnny, Tunny and Will, as they struggle to find meaning in a post- 9/11 world. When the three disgruntled men decide to flee the constraints of their hometown for the thrills of city life, their paths are quickly estranged when Tunny enters the armed forces, Will must stay home to attend familial responsibilities, and Johnny’s attention becomes divided between maintaining a relationship and loosing himself to addiction.

This high-octane show includes every song from Green Day’s album American Idiot, as well as several songs from follow-up release, 21st Century Breakdown.

LOST IN SHANGHAI Written by Jane Hutcheon Co-directed by William Yang & Tasnim Hossain

Throughout her adventurous journalism career, one story has intrigued Jane Hutcheon more than any other: the story of her mother Beatrice’s turbulent childhood in pre-Communist Shanghai. It’s the tale of an ordinary Eurasian family in extraordinary times, set against a backdrop of fading colonial opulence and looming war.

After visiting Shanghai in 2018, Jane began to search for the truth of her mother’s difficult beginnings. Lost in Shanghai is her family’s story of survival. Beatrice becomes a journalist at the South China Morning Post in the 1950’s, perhaps setting a precedent for her daughter.

Using projected images from the family archive curated by renowned photographer William Yang and music composed and performed by Dr Terumi Narushima, Jane narrates the moving story of Lost in Shanghai in her own words.

Little Wing Puppetry in association with Burnie Arts presents

A LITTLE BIT OF BLUE

A Detective Story, told with Puppetry, where you help solve the case.

A Little Bit of Blue is an interactive detective show for families, told with puppetry. As well as helping to unravel a mystery, the audience will learn about the extraordinary habits of the Australian Satin Bowerbird, and why they are so fascinated by the colour blue.

The story begins with strange disappearances from Mrs Mavis Hooley’s home. Little things go missing: clothes pegs; a tea cup; a ball of wool. But then the thief takes it just one step too far. Mavis calls in a Detective to investigate. A stake out is required. In the dead of night, the Detective indeed finds something peculiar. The children’s role is to help him solve the case.

Van Diemen’s Band in association with Burnie Arts presents

SONGS OF THE SEA Oceans are vast, deep and mysterious. They sustain us, swallow us whole and transport cultures over vast distances. Floating on the ocean’s turbulent swell are grand, lyrical narratives, stories, myth and song.

Steering the audience through Songs of the Sea is Mikelangelo (Mikelangelo and The Black Sea Gentlemen) – a raconteur, salt-crusted storyteller and bittersweet bard. In his deep baritone, Mikelangelo explores the heart’s stormy reaches and indulges in absurd overboard shanties.

Together with members of Van Diemen’s Fiddles and internationally renowned folk artists Luke Plumb and Dave McNamara on mandolin and accordion, Mikelangelo dives into his songbook of maritime folk music to evoke in song the salty smack of open water.

Mature Artists Dance Experience in association with Burnie Arts presents

TO CARRY/ TO HOLD To Carry / To Hold, by highly regarded choreographer Liesel Zink, has been specially created for Mature Artist Dance Experience (MADE) and is the company’s major work for 2024. Liesel Zink is an award-winning artist whose socially-engaged practice has seen her develop and present work around Australia, Asia and Eastern Europe.

This new work will celebrate the power of the human body and the stories it holds. From the mundane routines of everyday life to the transformative moments that alter our course, To Carry / To Hold intertwines past, present and future in an exploration of stories that connect us across time, space and generations. These are stories that still yearn to be expressed, shared, and experienced.

Following MADE’s successful season in Burnie in 2023, you can expect to be surprised and moved yet again by the powerhouse that is MADE.

By Patch Theatre in collaboration with Gravity & Other Myths I Wish… is an exciting collaboration between two internationally renowned South Australian companies – leaders in children’s performance Patch Theatre and boundary-pushing circus company Gravity & Other Myths.

People are made of stuff – good stuff and bad stuff, happy and sad stuff, stinky, odd, boring, dangerous, funny, sparkling potions of stuff. People also have secret ingredients – what could your secret ingredient be?

Enter a world of colour and creativity as performers imagine all the things they could be – from an astronaut to a unicorn, and everything in between. While exploring their feelings and differences on stage, they reveal the magic of individuality.

Featuring gravity-defying acrobatics, stunning visuals, and playful humour, I Wish… is an unforgettable live performance experience.

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through Creative Australia, its principal arts investment and advisory body.
