1.1BadmintonSchoolisanindependentdayandboardingschoolforfemalepupils.Itwasfoundedin 1858andmovedtoitspresentsitein1924.Theschoolcomprisesthreesections:junior,whichincludes anEarlyYearsFoundationStage(EYFS)setting;senior;andsixthform.Therearethreeboarding houseswhichcaterforboardersinYears5to8;Years9to11;andsixthformers.Theschoolhas identified68pupilsashavingspecialeducationalneedsand/ordisabilities(SEND),49ofwhomreceive additionalspecialistsupport.Nopupilhasaneducation,healthandcare(EHC)plan.Englishisan additionallanguage(EAL)for55pupils,ofwhom41receiveadditionalsupportfortheirEnglish.The school’spreviousinspectionwasafocusedcomplianceandeducationalqualityinspectioninOctober 2022.

1.2ThiswasanannouncedmaterialchangeinspectionattherequestoftheDepartmentforEducation (DfE)toassesstheschool’sproposaltoincreaseitspupilrollfrom550to625.Theinspectionfocused ontheschool’scompliancewiththeEducation(IndependentSchoolStandards)Regulations2014 (ISSRs),theNationalMinimumStandardsforBoarding2022andtherequirementsoftheEarlyYears StatutoryFramework.

2.1Theschoolmeetsthestandards.

2.2Theschoolhasacurriculumpolicyandschemesofworksuitableforpupilsuptotheageof19including theadditionalnumberofpupilsappliedfor.Theplannedcurriculumprovidesappropriateexperiences inlinguistic,mathematical,scientific,technological,humanandsocial,physical,aestheticandcreative education.Planningsupportspupilseffectivelyinacquiringspeaking,listening,literacyandnumeracy skills.Ittakesintoaccounttheage,aptitudesandneedsofallpupils,includingthosewithSENDand EAL.Theschoolalsoprovidessuitablepersonal,social,healthandeconomiceducation(PSHEE)with suitableprovisionplannedfortheadditionalpupilsappliedfor.Thisincludesappropriatecareers guidance,work-relatedexperience,andaneffectivepolicyforRSE.Theschool’sextensivecocurricularprovisionsupportsthepreparationofpupilsforlifeinBritishsocietyandprovidessuitable activitiesforboardersintheirfreetime.Theschoolislikelytocontinuetomeetrequirementswith theincreasedpupilnumbersappliedfor.

2.3Theschoolmeetsthestandard.

2.4Suitablyqualifiedandexperiencedstaffwiththerequisiteskillsandknowledgetoteachthecurriculum uptotheageof19havebeenappointed.Teachinggroupshavebeenadjustedsuitablyinorderto accommodatetheadditionalpupilnumbersappliedfor.Thisenablestheschooltomaintaincurrent teacher-pupilratiosandprovision.Theteachingiswellplannedacrossallsubjects.Thisincludesthe useofarangeofappropriateresourcesandextensiveuseoftheoutdoorenvironmentandspecialist facilities.Boardersaresupportedeffectivelyintheirstudiesbyarangeofstaff.Staffdemonstrate appropriatesubjectknowledgewhenteaching,implementingtheschool’sbehaviourpolicywithinan ethosofappropriatelywarmandcaringrelationshipsbetweenpupilsandbetweenstaffandpupils. 2.8TheschooleffectivelypromotesvalueswhicharefundamentaltolifeinBritainthroughitsPSHEE programme,assembliesandawidevarietyofactivitiesandeventswhichtakeplacethroughoutthe year.Duringdiscussions,pupilsshowedclearunderstandingoftheimportanceofhavingrespectfor othersregardlessoftheirbackgroundortheprotectedcharacteristics.Opportunitiestopromote toleranceandharmonyarepromotedeffectivelyintheboardinghousesandthroughassembliesand tutortimes.Theschool’srestorativeapproachtomanagingbehaviourenablespupilstoconsiderthe impactoftheirbehaviouronothersandtoresolveconflictssothatallconcernedcanmoveforward positively.Opportunitiestosupportarangeofcharitiesenablespupilstomakemeaningful contributionstothelivesofotherswithintheschool,thelocalcommunityandthewiderworld.These opportunitiesenableboarderstodevelopleadershipskills,asdoesaneffectiveprefectsystem. 2.12Theschoolimplementsitsarrangementseffectivelytosafeguardandpromotethewelfareofpupils. Duringdiscussionspupils,includingboarders,statedconfidentlythattheyfeelsafeinschoolandthat thereareseveralmembersofstaffandcounsellorstowhomtheycanturniftheyareworriedor concerned.Whenpupilsraiseconcerns,theyreceiveasuitableresponseandactionistakenwhen necessary.Thisisconfirmedbyrecordsofsafeguarding.Pupilsunderstandhowtostaysafeonlineand theschoolmonitorstheuseoftechnologyappropriately.

2.13Safeguardingmattersaresuitablyoverseenbythedesignatedsafeguardinglead(DSL)whoisa memberoftheseniorleadershipteam,supportedbydeputyDSLs,includingintheEYFSandboarding. TheDSLliaiseseffectivelywiththegovernorresponsibleforsafeguardingtoensureeffectiveoversight ofsafeguardingprocedures,tomonitortheimplementationofthepolicyandtoensurethatanannual reviewofsafeguardingisundertakeninlinewiththelocalauthorityframework.Duringdiscussions, staffdemonstratedthattheyhadunderstoodrecenttrainingwithregardtoKeepingChildrenSafein Education(KCSIE)2022,includingwithregardtochild-on-childabuse,contextualsafeguardingand respondingtolow-levelconcerns.Staffaresuitablyinductedintheschool’sprocedures,includinga suitablestaffcodeofconduct,whentheyjointheschool,andthisisenhancedthroughtraining sessionsatthestartofeachtermandregularupdates.TheDSLshaveattendedtheappropriatelevel ofinter-agencytraining.Governorshaveundergonesuitabletraininginsafeguarding.

2.14Theschoolmaintainsappropriate,confidentialrecordsofallchildprotectionconcernsandliaises appropriatelywithchildren’sservicesincludingwhenmakingreferralsandnotifyingtheauthority whenpupilsleaveschool.Theschoolliaisesappropriatelywiththelocalauthoritydesignatedofficer (LADO)withregardtoanyconcerns.Itimplementsappropriatemechanismstohandleanyallegations againstadultsworkingwithpupils.Leadershipandgovernancehaveconsideredcarefullyandacted uponthecontextualimpactofadmittingadditionalnumbersofpupils,includingthroughthe appointmentoftwoadditionalDDSLs.Theschoolislikelytocontinuetomeetrequirementswiththe increasedpupilnumbersappliedfor.

2.16Theschoolimplementsanappropriatepolicytopromotegoodbehavioureffectively.During discussions,pupilsstatedthatpupilsmostlybehavewellinschoolandthatrewardsandsanctions administeredarefair.Recordsofsanctionssupportthisview.Olderpupilsprovidepositiverolemodels foryoungerpupils.Theyeffectivelysupportthestaffinencouragingmembersoftheschool communitytodevelopself-controlandself-disciplineandinimplementingarestorativeapproachto resolveanyconflict.Theschoolislikelytocontinuetomeetrequirementswiththeincreasedpupil numbersappliedfor.

Variousinitiatives,suchasanti-bullyingweekanddisplaysaroundtheschool,educatepupilsabout bullying,howtopreventitandwhattodoshouldtheyencounterit.Staffareappropriatelytrainedto recogniseanddealwithanybullyingwhichmayoccur.Duringdiscussions,pupilsdemonstrateda matureunderstandingofthedifferenttypesofbullyingincludingphysical,verbalandonline.Pupils statedthattheschoollistensandrespondsquicklyiftheyareexperiencingfriendshipissuesorfeel thattheyarebeingbullied.Theyspokepositivelyabouthowstaffsupporttheminunderstanding relationshipsanddevelopingtheskillsrequiredtocommunicatewithothersandformfriendships, includinginboarding.Theschoolislikelytocontinuetomeetrequirementswiththeincreasedpupil numbersappliedfor.
