TOP SEED - Marc Zwiebler is one of Germany’s top badminton players. Starting play at the age of six, Marc’s talent was instantly recognized by those around him. He has gone on to win many titles in his native Germany, and won the gold medal at the European Championships in 2012. He made it to the finals of the Indonesia Superseries Premier in 2013.

PLAYER TO WATCH - Lee Chong Wei is one of the all-time outstanding badminton talents. His heroics at the top of the game, for many years have earned him the title Datuk and had the Malaysian Prime Minister describe him as a national hero. A World number one, Lee has a number of gold medals to his name after victory at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne and the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. He won back-to-back Yonex All England Open titles in 2010 and 2011.

TOP PAN AM PLAYER TO WATCH - Osleni Guerrero of Cuba is a beast of an athlete. Any NCAA athletic director would have been thrilled to have an athlete of his physical stature, no matter what the sport! You may ask yourself how did one of Cuba’s best raw athletes become involved in badminton. Osleni was discovered in Centro Habana while attending the Ponce Carrascon municipal sports facility. Because of his early discovery Guerrero was provided the opportunity to change schools which provided an opportunity for him to train with older athletes. He has faced many challenges along his journey, including lack of equipment, lack of sparring partners, but he will never use any of those as an excuse.

TOP CANADIAN – Martin Giuffre of Calgary is relatively new to international badminton. As a junior Martin has won numerous titles at national and international events such as the Pan Am Junior Championships. Martin then left home and studied at Western University in London, Ontario earning a undergraduate degree in Kinesiology. Martin’s career goal is to study medicine and become a doctor. However, Martin put that goal on hold at the end of 2014 and is determined to improve his game and qualify for Rio 2016. Martin would like to duplicate his quarter-final appearance at last year’s Canada Open in Vancouver.

MEILLEUR JOUEUR PAN AM À SUIVRE - Osleni Guerrero de Cuba est une bête d’un athlète. Tout directeur sportif ANAC aurait été ravi d’avoir un athlète de sa stature physique, quel que soit le sport! Top seeded Akane Yamaguchi, just turned 18 years of age. She is a female Japanese badminton player who is a singles specialist, rare considering the domination of Japanese women’s doubles teams. She is one of the Japanese teenage prodigies that many people predict to be future elite women’s singles competitor. She reached the finals of the BWF World Junior Championships three years in a row, winning silver at the 2012 BWF World Junior Championships in Chiba, Japan and winning the gold twice, once at the 2013 BWF World Junior Championships in Bangkok, Thailand and once at the 2014 BWF World Junior Championships in Alor Setar, Malaysia. At the age of 16 years and 3 months, Yamaguchi became the youngest player ever to win the BWF Super Series tournament by beating her compatriot Shizuka Uchida in the final of 2013 Japan Super Series. This was also the first time ever that a Japanese lady won the home event in the ladies singles at the Japan Open. This was in fact a historic first ever Japan Open victory for the home country.
Top Pan Am player - Zhang Beiwen was born 12 July 1990 in Liaoning, is a female professional badminton player who is a singles specialist. Having a unique background being born in China, then moving to Singapore at the age of 13 and playing with the Singapore National Team until 2012, when she moved to the United States of America to compete while training in Las Vegas. In 2013, Zhang Beiwen won four international challenge tournaments with singles titles at the Swiss International in Yverdon-les-Bains, the Yonex USA International in Orlando, Florida, the Yonex Welsh International in Cardiff and the Carlton Irish Open International in Dublin. In 2014 she continued her winning streak for her new country the USA, with victories in Peru, USA, Brazil and the Netherlands. She won her first Grand Prix title at the 2014 U.S. Open Grand Prix Gold and backed it up with two more Grand Prix titles also winning the 2014 Brazil Open Grand Prix and 2014 Dutch Open Grand Prix. Zhang Beiwen competes in the German bundesliga team championship for BC Düren.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS Top Canadian player to watch - Michelle Li is the most successful Canadian female badminton player ever – not bad for an athlete who has wanted to change the sport in Canada since she won the silver medal at the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games. She competed at the Canada Games in 2007 and 2011, winning gold in both the women’s singles and doubles events in her second appearance. In 2011 she made her debut at the Pan Am Games where she was also a double gold medallist. Her doubles partner at both competitions was Alex Bruce, with whom Li had a breakthrough at the London 2012 Olympic Games when they finished fourth, by far Canada’s best-ever Olympic result in badminton. Li was eliminated from the Olympic singles event in the group stage. In 2014 Li became the first Canadian woman to ever win badminton singles gold at the Commonwealth Games. Another 2014 highlight came at the prestigious All-England Open where she advanced to the quarterfinals, helping her to reach a career-high singles world ranking at number 11.

Tête de série Akane Yamaguchi, tout juste 18 ans. Elle est une joueuse de badminton féminin japonais qui est un spécialiste de simple, rare compte tenu de la domination des doubles des équipes féminines japonaises. Elle est l’un des prodiges adolescentes japonaises que beaucoup de gens prédisent d’être la concurrente élite future en simple dames. Elle a atteint la finale des Championnats du monde juniors BWF trois ans de suite, médaillée d’argent aux Championnats du monde juniors 2012 BWF à Chiba, au Japon et gagnante de la médaille d’or à deux reprises, une fois au Championnat du monde junior 2013 BWF à Bangkok, en Thaïlande et une fois à lors des Championnats du monde juniors 2014 BWF à Alor Setar, Malaisie. Elle a participé aux Jeux du Canada en 2007 et 2011, remportant l’or en simple à la fois aux épreuves du simple et double dans sa deuxième apparition. En 2011, elle a fait ses débuts aux Jeux panaméricains, où elle était aussi double médaillée d’or. Sa partenaire de double aux deux compétitions était Alex Bruce, avec qui Li avait une percée aux Jeux Olympiques de 2012 à Londres quand elles ont fini quatrième, de loin meilleur résultat olympique du Canada en badminton. keat & heong Pair to watch – Koo Kien Keat & Tan Boon Heong of Malaysia jumped 92 spots in the world rankings within the last month due to their success at the Star Australian Open. Tan and Koo won the bronze and silver medals at the 2009 and 2010 World Championships respectively as well as the gold and silver medals at the 2006 and 2010 Asian Games. The last time the two were ranked the world’s No.1 men’s doubles pair was back in 2010.

past champions by ken poole I am flooded with fond memories from my playing days, coaching days and the stories you hear from other players as I look over the list of previous winners of the Canadian Open. We have certainly been blessed with a badminton Hall of Fame group of players over the years: Erland Kops, Rudy Hartono, Flemming Delfs, Morten Frost, Christian Hadinata, Ade Chandra, Thomas Lund, Kim Dong-Moon, Judy Devlin, Gillian Gilks, Nora Perry, Camilla Martin, Gil Young-ah and many more. We have even had a number of foreign players decide to make Canada their home after ending their competitive careers. Winning the Canadian Open is not an easy task for our homegrown players. About half of our titles came in the first 12 years, and men’s singles seems to be the hardest title to claim. Only four Canadians have managed to win this event. Dave McTaggart did it twice back in 195758, Bruce Rollick in 1968, Jamie Paulson (Calgary) in 1973-74 and Brian Abra (Calgary) in 1999. What stood out for me is our most decorated Canadian Champions were never able to win the title. Wayne MacDonnell and Andrew Dabeka with 6 national titles and Mike Butler with five in a row all found this title elusive. Canada has had more success in women’s singles. The great Marj Shedd won four in a row from 19601963. I had the pleasure of meeting Marj when I was at the University of Toronto and was impressed with her tactical knowledge of the game. Wendy Clarkson, perhaps our best international singles player, won three in a row from 1976-78. Wendy was always an inspiration with her small stature but intense desire and competitive nature. lien won in 1989. Denyse has won more Canadian titles than anyone else finishing with 31 in total, as well as numerous international accomplishments. Our new international star Michelle Li goes into the 2015 tournament as defending champ. Michelle has won the past five National Championships and with a recent win over the current World Champion, to go along with her Commonwealth Games Gold Medal, she will likely find herself as one of our greatest player ever at the end of her career. A few of our top Canadian men’s doubles champions all managed to capture at least one Canadian Open title as well. Eight time champion Mike Bitten, seven time champion Will Milroy and six time champion Bryan Blanshard. I look forward to seeing if our current five time Canadian Champs, Adrian Liu and Derrick Ng can add their names to the list. Women’s Doubles has been the most successful event for Canada. Most of our legendary teams are on the list. Milaine Cloutier/Robbyn Hermitage, Marj Shedd/Dorothy Tinline, Jane Youngberg/Barbara Welch and Johanne Falardeau/Denyse Julien. I was fortunate to play with numerous great Canadian players and against quite a few international stars during my playing career in the mid-80’s. I remember playing against the famous Sidek brothers at the 1984 Open. It was one of the rare times my father got to see me play and he commented after the match that he thought my partner, Bob MacDougall, and I didn’t have very powerful smashes. Not realizing of course that the impenetrable wall of defence the Sidek’s put up was something they did to everyone.
I came up against Billy Gilliland and Nora Perry at the 1985 Open and the one time I managed to get Nora out of position, I hit it to the open spot at the net only to have Billy appear out of nowhere to put my shot on the floor. I guess they were number 1 in the world for a reason. Playing singles against the 1985 Open champ, Jens Peter Nierhoff from Denmark presented the challenge of trying to figure out where he was going to hit his overhead backhand. The common theme here is that I ended up on the losing end of all these contests but I cherish the memories of having the opportunity to play against some of badminton’s great players. World #2, Channarong Ratanseangsuang fromThailand was singles champion in 1964-65 and he later made Calgary his home and endured a life-long coaching career at the Glencoe Club. I moved to Calgary to train under his guidance and then spent 20 fabulous years coaching side by side with him. Channarong also won the 1970 Open Doubles Championships with countryman and world class player Raphi Kanchanaraphi who had also moved to Canada to coach at the Granite Club in Toronto. Former All-England Champion, Billy Gilliland (Scotland), immigrated to Calgary in the late 1980’s to become Canada’s National Coach. The draws for the 2015 Canadian Open have been finalized and once again we have a fantastic group of world class players for another generation of Canadian players to watch, compete against, learn from and have memorable experiences with.
