UW’s Hyperloop team earns Local businesses gear up for new innovation award in California semester with more staff, product

Badgerloop was the only team to win an innovation award in back-to-back competitions

A team of University of Wisconsin students earned an innovation award after competing at the Hyperloop Competition Weekend II in Hawthorne, California on Aug. 25-27.

The goal of the competition was to clock the fastest speed on the one-mile SpaceX Hyperloop at SpaceX headquarters, according to a UW engineering news release. The competition brought together 25 teams and 600 students from around the world.

The team, Badgerloop, was founded in 2015 and is comprised of mainly undergraduate engineering students.

To enter the competition the team had to first submit their design to SpaceX, team member Mark Swartz said. They were then given feedback to modify their design. After the design was approved, the manufacturing process began for the pod.

“Once we got the go ahead we were accepted into the competition, we started building our design,” Swartz said. “[We spent] a lot of time in our office manufacturing the parts, putting them all together and putting all of the designs into reality.”

The week before the actual competition weekend, the team spent time in California going through tests with SpaceX and working on their design, Swartz said. The tests were there to ensure pods could safely go through the high speed tubes.

The team spent seven days improving their design after a long day of testing at SpaceX headquarters. This was the most stressful part

because it was a time intensive competition to get their pods approved by a SpaceX advisor, Swartz said.

At a previous competition, the team was able to meet the owners of a local auto body shop who allowed them to come in and work on their pod after the safety tests, Swartz said.

“It was a lot of getting up early and heading over to SpaceX headquarters,” Swartz said.

“We’d take [the pod] over there and pretty much work on the pod most nights.”

The first three teams to pass all the tests were the only ones allowed to run their pods on the vacuum tube, Swartz said.

Badgerloop was not one of the first three teams but they did receive an innovation award, Swartz said. They are the only team to do so in back-to-back competitions.

The innovation award is given by the judges based on a team’s innovative technologies, Swartz said. For Badgerloop, the propulsion system set them above their competitors.

In the Badgerloop pod, the propulsion system has a base of nitrogen tanks connected to thrusters with curved piping, according to the UW engineering news release.

The team is looking forward to advancing further in future competitions, Kali Kinziger, Badgerloop president, said. They are working on improving their systems and trying out new technologies.

The team is also looking for new members both inside and outside the engineering department, Kiniziger said.

Program trains UW computer science students in entrepreneurship

The gALPHA program will train fifteen UW computer science students on how to be successful entrepreneurs once they leave school

Gener8tor, a Madison-based accelerator is continuing its partnership with the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation to pilot an entrepreneurship training program for computer science students.

The program, called gALPHA, builds off of an already existing partnership between WARF and gener8tor, Jeanan Yasiri Moe, a spokesperson for WARF, said.

In recent years, the two organizations have worked together on a program similar to gALPHA known as gBETA, Moe said. “gALPHA is a continuation of WARF’s partnership with gener8tor,” Moe said. “We have been sponsors of gBETA for the last few years as well as investors in their fund.”

The gALPHA program will focus on training fifteen University of Wisconsin students on how to be successful entrepreneurs once they leave school, Kiernan McGowan, who will be directing the program, said.

While gALPHA is not exclusively for computer science students, the program is

“All of us recognize that the value of this entrepreneurial skill is critical in the new fastpaced technologically-infused world that we all live in,” Patel said.

Skills associated with successful

entrepreneurs don’t always come naturally to students studying computer science McGowan said.

McGowan, a UW alum, cites his experiences at UW as part of the motivation behind his belief in the importance of entrepreneurial training.

“I think my time at the UW did help prepare me for my path of entrepreneurship since there were many resources I was able to draw on,” McGowan said. “I’ve experienced first hand how the university cares about fostering startups and I’m excited and grateful to be able to give back.”

Gener8tor, which is one of the largest accelerators in the United States, invests in handfuls of startups in Madison, Milwaukee and Minneapolis every year.

UW officials have expressed excitement and approval at the prospect of working with the company. Patel said its national scope and investment ability are positive factors for gALPHA students.

“Gener8tor has an amazing track record in

nurturing early-stage startups in Wisconsin,” Patel said. “The numbers speak for themselves.”

When discussing how students in the program will be trained, McGowan said that students will “learn through doing.”

Throughout the program, students will be separated into teams. From there they will draft ideas for potential products and eventually build one of their favorite product ideas McGowan said. gALPHA will provide students with consumer feedback on their products and subsequent advice on how to improve them, something which McGowan believes these students will not find elsewhere.

“During this time gALPHA will work with teams to set goals for development and assist them with gathering customer feedback and making sense of it,” McGowan said. “Many of these steps may be unfamiliar or unnatural for these students, and gALPHA staff is there to help them and push them to keep moving forward on their idea.”

UW alumna honored for philanthropic work in children’s hospital Nooshin Fesenthal attributed her success to UW’s academic environment, desire to help others during time at school

Nooshin Fesenthal, a University of Wisconsin alumna, will be celebrated at the 62nd Annual Gold Coast Fashion Award Show for her work with the Children’s Service Board, a philanthropic organization that works to help sick and underprivileged children in the Chicago area.

Fesenthal, who graduated in 2005, is an investment sales broker at Jones Lang LaSalle, a commercial real estate corporation. There she has closed approximately $2.5 billion investment sales transactions for JLL. Besides her work at JLL, Fesenthal is a strong contributor to the community through her work with the Children’s Service Board of the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

Tom Donda, an account executive with Motion PR, a sponsor company of GCFAS, said CSB is “one of the most active and successful philanthropic organizations” that supports the hospital in “healthcare excellence.”

UW has a goal of creating students who will go on to contribute to their communities, something which is expressed in “The Wisconsin Idea,” Fesenthal said.

Fesenthal said she is appreciative of this aspect of UW’s approach to education because it has made her a more conscious citizen in her community.

“The school also emphasized that we are all responsible citizens who need to have an active

role in our community to make society better as a whole,” Fesenthal said.

Fesenthal said she found a community of friends based on genuine love and mutual support which were fostered through the UW’s energy.

The genuine love found in these friendships, Fesenthal said, translated to an even stronger desire to give back to her community in her adult life.

Being a contributor to CSB for the past five years has allowed Fesenthal to apply the lessons she learned at UW to making children healthier and happier each day, something which Fesenthal said is extremely rewarding.

Concealed carry permit applications doubled during last year Rep. Melissa Sargent, D-Madison, believes increase in permit holders contributed in part to Madison gun violence

A Wisconsin Department of Justice report revealed the amount of concealed carry weapon permit applications doubled during the last year.

According to the report, in the first half of 2017, Wisconsin’s Department of Justice Crime Information Bureau processed 62,176 concealed carry weapon applications and renewals. During the same period last year, the DOJ saw 32,424 concealed carry weapon applications and renewals, almost half of this years.

As of the report, which was released in late August, there are currently 330,153 concealed carry weapon license holders, according to the report. By the end of 2016, Wisconsin’s DOJ reported more than 321,000 concealed carry weapon license holders.

Since Wisconsin’s concealed carry law passed in 2011, there have been Republican efforts to loosen the restrictions that exist for gun-owning citizens.

State Sen. David Craig, R-Town of Vernon,

and state Rep. Mary Felzkowski, R-Irma, introduced a bill that would remove the training requirements for concealed carry permits. Residents would be able to hold concealed firearms without any sort of training or state issued permit.

The legislators’ main concern is that existing restrictions made it difficult to obtain legal firearms for citizens.

“If you decide to carry a weapon to protect yourself or your family, you should be able to do so easily — without bureaucratic hurdles and without cost,” Craig said in a statement.

Madison Police Department Chief Mike Koval said he believes in the peace of mind owning a firearm can bring to a person’s sense of safety.

But, having been a past firearms trainer for 17 years, Koval also believes training should be a necessary component of public firearm safety.

“I personally think that a modest training requirement is not asking an awful lot as

a responsible gun owner,” Koval said. “I am a concealed carry permit [holder] myself and I believe in the training regiment.”

Others, like Jeff Nass, former Former President of Wisconsin Firearm Owners, Ranges, Cubs and Educators Inc., disagree that training needs to be required by law.

Nass believes responsible, law-abiding citizens will seek out their own forms of training to safely use a firearm.

“Personal responsibility is a requirement for almost everything we do ... it’s the same thing with firearms,” Nass said.

The constitutional carry bill has not passed in the legislature, leaving communities like Madison to question the current concealed carry weapon laws with gun-related crimes on the rise.

State Rep. Melissa Sargent, D-Madison, thinks the increase in numbers of concealed carry holders has contributed in part to the

violence.

“We’re seeing more guns on the streets because there are more permittees who, for example, might not be storing their firearm properly or safely, but also quite frankly, we’re seeing more gun violence because permit holders are the people engaging in gun violence,” Sargent said.

But Nass believes the issue is people who have bad intentions to begin with.

“Everybody ... thinks firearms are dangerous, and it’s not the firearm itself that is — it’s the misuse,” Nass said.

Regardless of what is responsible for the increase in violence in Madison, Koval said it needs to stop.

“I think you see a unifying cry in [Madison] neighborhoods saying [the gun violence] has become a sad commentary affecting all of our qualities of life and our ability to move about freely and enjoy this city as we were

Leah Vukmir runs for U.S Senate State Senator announces her campaign through a public video

State Senator Leah Vukmir, R-Brookfield, announced her political campaign against Democrat Tammy Baldwin for the United States Senate Thursday.

She made her campaign announcement public in a campaign video with promises of making change in government.

Vukmir started her political career after she noticed inconsistencies in her daughter’s schooling system.

In response, she formed a coalition consisting of a small group of parents to make changes in education which led her to politics.

“We’ve given a voice to people who thought their elected officials weren’t listening,” Vukmir said.

She extended her political influence beyond her residential town, Waukesha, to Madison but her conservative views were met with controversy. Vukmir was told she would not go far as a conservative.

“I ran for office because I realized that if you want to make change you have to stand up and lead, “ Vukmir said.

In her video, Vukmir explained her support for education and the military.

She said growing up the “Wisconsin Way” formed her ideals and work ethic.

“I’ve never given up on anything that I’ve fought for. It’s not just the Wisconsin way to not give up. It’s the American way,” Vukmir said. “We can change Washington and that’s why I’m running.”

Based on her followers’ feedback, Vukmir said she believes Wisconsin needs a change and she is ready to work for what it will take. Vukmir believes the place to start is leadership in Washington and thinks a conservative can set the right pace for politics.

Republican financial backers, Diane Hendricks and Kohler, have decided to support Vukmir according to The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Their support will help Vukmir fight against Kevin Nicholson, Vukmir’s opponent.

“Wisconsin needs a voice for the Wisconsin Way. It’s that simple,” Vukmir said.

Proposed legislation would ensure UW System veterans get full tuition reimbursement The student will be fully reimbursed as long as they maintain 2.0 GPA, have no failing grades

A bipartisan bill introduced by two Republican legislators will ensure University of Wisconsin System undergraduate students who are members of the Wisconsin National Guard will get the full cost of tuition reimbursed in a timely manner.

In the past, the Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs was reimbursing all students $4,636.68 — but the business and engineering programs are more expensive due to differential tuition, John Bechtol, UW assistant dean of students, said in an email to The Badger Herald.

If the WDMA begins reimbursing by direct deposit instead of mailing paper checks, students should get their payment faster, Bechtol said.

“The bill clarifies the process would allow the Department of Military Affairs to verify grant requirements electronically so the payment schedule is much more fluid,” Rogowski said.

and engineering students $4,636.68, not the actual tuition amount of $5,136.72 and $5,336.64, respectively,” Bechtol said.

Jon Rogowski, legislative aid for Rep. Mike Kuglitsch, R-New Berlin, said the legislation isn’t changing anything in practice, only assuring that 100 percent of tuition will be covered for guard members, regardless of the program they choose.

At UW, around 85 students are using the Wisconsin National Guard Tuition Grant, Bechtol said.

The student is reimbursed for tuition at the end of the semester as long as they earn a term GPA of 2.0 and have no failing grades, according to the bill.

In addition to guaranteeing that the full cost of tuition will be covered, the bill also looks to address the “slow and cumbersome” application process for reimbursement, Bechtol

grant paid late fees on their tuition because of the delayed reimbursement checks.

“The bill allows government to adapt as technology advances to make sure our veterans get reimbursed on time in order to avoid taking out additional costly loans,” Rogowski said.

Behctol said it would be great if the process of reimbursement could be made easier for the student because it would be “beneficial all around.”

The bill is currently circulating for cosponsorship. After that, it will be sent to the chief clerk’s office before being referred to a committee in the state Senate.

After sharing concerns with the lack student accessibility to safety resources at UW, junior Jake Victor and Associated Students of Madison Shared Governance Chair Deena Whitwam reached out to Brent Plisch, UWPD Detective Lieutenant and the officer spearheading the WiscGuardian Project, according to a statement released by ASM. UWPD spokesperson Marc Lovicott, said UWPD partnered with Rave, a mobile safety vendor that helps safety officials to respond and communicate more effectively in case of emergencies, and branded the app.

The app will allow for students to send text tips to UWPD, use a safety timer when

walking home and build a profile on the app that will allow for UWPD to help in emergencies, according to the statement released, Plisch said.

“The app has many features including a direct link to 911, a direct non-emergency link via phone and text to UWPD and a guardian/ timer feature allowing students and others to be guardians while moving from location to location,” Plisch said.

One other main feature of the app allows students to make emergency calls and send text tips to emergency officials if the students themselves are in trouble or the students see someone or something suspicious, Plisch said.

Lovicott said UWPD had been looking to develop a safety app for years.

“We’ve been exploring the use of a campus safety app for a number of years” Lovicott said. “We found an app that felt was a great fit for our campus, that really puts personal safety in the hands of the students.”

WiscGuardian can be easily downloaded on mobile devices, according to a statement from UWPD. After students invite “guardians,”

such as friends and family members, to join them on the app, they can request their guardians to virtually walk them anywhere.

To install the app, students must use their UW email, according to the UWPD statement.

The app has been approved for UW students to use WiscGuardian in Fall 2017.

“This was a student driven project and we were happy to have a voice in the choice of apps and provide our knowledge to the process,” Plisch said. “After the idea was proposed, I worked with members of ASM to find an app that met their criteria for a public safety app.”

Madison-based website makes Uber, Lyft transparent, safe Ride Safe World allows for passengers to research their transportation network company vehicle and driver for insurance and records

In an effort to make transportation network companies, such as Uber and Lyft, safer for riders, Justin La Plante, a former Madison taxi driver created Ride Safe World, a website that gives riders information on whether their driver has a criminal record.

Ride Safe World is a non-profit organization dedicated to transportation safety and transportation labor ethics.

The safety of the customers, drivers and general public is La Plante’s top priority, he said.

Currently, there are two proposed senate bills that would hold transportation network companies, such as Uber and Lyft to the same standard as traditional transportation companies.

Senate bills 181 and 182, proposed by Sen. Chris Larson, D-Milwaukee, would hold TNC’s, such as Uber and Lyft, to the same standard as PTC’s, such as taxi and limousines.

enforce local regulations on TNCs, their drivers and the drivers’ vehicles.

The second bill would require TNC’s to establish a complaint procedure for discriminatory or fraudulent behavior toward passengers.

Larson said TNC’s lack proper insurance, exploit gig-economy drivers and doesn’t give security for passengers by having little-to-no background checks of the drivers.

PTC’s in attendance included many taxi drivers from the midwest who vehemently voiced their support of these bills to add more transparency to the TNC industry.

La Plante’s website gives transparency to ridesharing companies, he said.

The website allows the general public to enter a ride share license plate number which then informs the user if their driver has a criminal background and if the vehicle is properly insured, La Plante said.

It does not give detailed information about the driver. The site also does not report plate numbers, rather it only looks them up, La Plante said.

“We only list felons if they committed dangerous crimes involving assault or

major traffic violations that would have definitely barred them from obtaining employment with any vetted commercial transportation provider,” La Plante said.

The website gathers its information on Records Finder, a public records search site, and through research and knowledge from experience in the industry, La Plante said.

According to their findings, in the past two years, Ride Safe World has found 144 Uber and Lyft drivers that either have criminal backgrounds, do not have verifiable insurance coverage or both.

Since April, La Plante said they have found five TNC drivers that had committed battery with other charges like DUIs and breaking-and-entering. Five sex offenders were also found in Madison.

La Plante said uninsured vehicles were also very common in the TNC industry and that companies, such as Uber, stipulate this in their terms and agreements.

Under Section 6 of Uber ’s U.S. terms of use under limitation of liability, Uber is not responsible for any of their driver ’s

damages including lost profits, lost data, personal injury or property damage resulting from the use of the services, regardless of the negligence of Uber.

“This has lead to numerous incidents of uninsured rideshare and TNC wrecks in the state and accident incidentals being forced on the general tax-paying public of Wisconsin,” La Plante said.

Mike Hartmann, president of Wisconsin Limo Association, stressed TNCs created a large disadvantage to their company and others like it as they are not taxed and do not require full-time insurance, which is expensive, he said.

Public transportation companies, such as taxis, cost more, but it is because they are paying massive amounts of money to insurance companies to cover all possible scenarios, La Plante said.

“Another point that we try to make is that we are not in the business of destroying the idea of rideshares like Uber or Lyft,” La Plante said. “In reality, we also ask for looser regulations on taxis while getting common sense legislation for

‘ The 60 Yard Line’ tells story of superfandom, life-changing choices Through traditional comedy style, strong female leads, filmmakers hope to create relatable Wisconsin movie

Residents from around Wisconsin and several University of Wisconsin-Madison alumni showcase true fandom in the new comedy, “The 60 Yard Line.”

The film was directed by Leif Gantvoort and written and executively produced by Ryan Churchill and Nick Greco. Inspired by a true story, main character Ben “Zagger” Zagowski practically bleeds green and yellow. Zagger is played by Churchill, who is joined by Greco playing the best friend, co-worker and Bears fan, Nick Polano.

Amanda Veith, a UW alumni, has produced several short films and a couple features in Los Angeles, but moved back to Wisconsin for family stability. Back in California, she was put into touch with Churchill and Greco through her previous agency. From there, the connection flourished into a movie both equally hilarious and relatable.

The movie is essentially based on a Packers super fan’s experience during the 2009 season, in which he trades financial stability for extreme fandom. Zagger’s new and treasured home is practically in Lambeau Field’s parking lot. While this may seem ideal for game days and the hoopla that accompanies festivities in Green Bay, the movie delivers an ultimate lesson that there is a line between having fun and losing valuable aspects of one’s life.

Zagger comes alive through the combining of several original characters. Real life friends, who all are involved with the buying of the infamous home, were consolidated into one character for script formatting purposes, and to make the story more distinct, Churchill said. Since Churchill and Greco co-wrote the script, the plot is as realistic as possible.

Conflict arises when the Bears fan, Polano, comes into the plot. He not only becomes a conflict in football interests, but also one in stability and responsibility. Polano’s main role is to convince Zagger to leave his party life in the past, since it has been causing trouble in relationships, Greco said.

Greco describes his main role throughout the movie as “[encouraging] Zagger to leave his party life” which has been “[leading] him into some trouble with his relationships and work.”

“This creates a fun conflict because Zagger, who is a huge Packer fan, but yet his best friend and co-worker is a huge Bears fan,” Churchill said. This relationship is something very similar

to relationships at University of Wisconsin. Veith would also like to emphasize this aspect of the relationship as Greco is from Naperville, Illinois, and is truly a die-hard Bears fan, thus making this role not too far from home for Greco and UW students.

While the camaraderie can be fun at times, Polano is essentially there to draw the line between fandom and obsession. Purchasing the “60 Yard Line” house seemed like an ingenious idea for any super fan. However, there does not seem to be enough financial stability for Zagger.

Zagger’s girlfriend, Amy Etzman, played by Kim Crossman, is also there to help find this balance.

“Amy is forcing Zagger to find a balance and he won’t find a balance,” Churchill said.

The conflict between Amy and Zagger seems to be the central conflict of the movie as although she loves the Packers, she is able to find the healthy balance while Zagger seems too stubborn to do so.

Within and beyond the conflict, a strong female role is present throughout the entire movie.

Churchill and Greco worked very diligently to create this role, as more often than not “the female characters get written as lower status, ‘damsels in distress’, and we just did not want to do that,” Churchill said.

This stems from a variety of reasons, one of which being it not being very accurate any more.

Further, Churchill states that in many of the crew’s personal lives, “the female characters…are all the bread winners and the stronger roles.” Churchill and Greco state that writing multiple strong female roles was not difficult because it was a lot of what they had already known.

Churchill emphasizes that Amy is a “smart [woman] with a high paying job” and is the one who worked to get Zagger started with a stable job and begin his transition out of the 60 Yard Line home. In addition to this, Zagger’s younger sister Debbie, played by Jacquelyn Zook, is the “smarter, younger sister” and also working to help Zagger.

Most important, however, is Zagger’s mom, Linda Zagowski, played by Mindy Sterling. As the owner and fuel behind the family welding company, Linda not only provides financial stability, but is the “leading brains and emotional steering wheel behind the entire film,” Veith said.

Like before, this female role is strikingly similar to Churchill’s personal life as his mother owns her own beauty salon and has supported the family for years now.

With this powerful female presence, Veith believes that “[her] female friends are going to love this film.” With the “bromance” and comedic aspects appealing to many men, the “strong female lead contingency throughout the film” will attract many beyond the stereotypical crowd.

To add more excitement to the movie, former Packers players John Kuhn, Michael Montgomery, Ahman Green and a few more will also be featured in the story.

While having guests like these is great, “at the end of the day…it’s just a good, funny film,” Churchill said. Winning Gest Comedy at the Los Angeles Film Festival and many Jurys at the Wisconsin Film Festival, this film does not need much more evidence to its humor and greatness.

To top off that greatness, the cast and crew

have been organizing many different screenings and premiere parties. While many have already occurred, September 12th begins a month-long tour or premiere screenings, traveling to cities such as Madison, Milwaukee, La Crosse and others throughout the month.

While the movie is being played at select theaters everywhere, a screening is currently being organized with the university, enabling students to be able to see the film at Union South sometime this fall.

Five time Emmy, Grammy-nominated actress Margaret Cho, talks expectations for women of color in comedy, inspirations

In the world of comedy, there are a handful of names you need to be familiar with. One of those names is Margaret Cho. Five time Emmy and Grammy nominated, ranked Rolling Stone’s Top 50 best stand-up comics of all time, creator of the first Asian American TV show — the list goes on.

Cho will bring her “Fresh Off the Bloat” tour to Madison on September 24. Topics of the tour include family, political satire and beauty standards.

BH: What do you hope to accomplish with this particular comedy tour?

BH: Do you ever face setbacks for being a woman of color comedian?

MC: I hope that we can get a little bit of freedom from worrying. These are crazy times, of course, thinking about Trump and...I was really involved in this past election. I felt very confident that Hillary Clinton was going to win, so it’s still shocking to me. It’s crazy. I was

MC: I don’t know. I know that it’s just inevitable that we are going to be better. Women are just better in comedy than men. There’s no contest. I think they can’t compete because we have to come off in such a difficult environment.

Margaret Cho: Always and forever, Joan Rivers. She was a true force of nature. She was really influential and important in my development. When I first saw her when I was a little kid... everything changed. She moved me in a way that nobody else has.

BH: Are there other reasons you got involved in comedy besides being inspired by her?

MC: I was doing theater in school and I thought that this was the right thing for me. I always knew that I was going to be a comedian. It was a weird thing like...it was just my destiny. It just all seemed very clear to me at a very young age. I just knew that this was my path.

BH: Has there ever been a joke that you decided to cut from a performance, or were there specific jokes that you regret?

I think that’s really what comedy is about. I like just trying to make sense of it and that’s part of comedy. We don’t have all of the dudes and the to be risqué and I like to challenge people... but what the show is. Then another part is about bros, like the camaraderie that they do. We just no, there has not been a point where I’m like, ‘I race, television, movies, Asian Americans, don’t… and so because of that we’re infinitely can’t believe I said that.’ You want to challenge whitewashing, and all of that kind of stuff better than our male counterparts. MC: I think it’s great. I’m really proud of what I have accomplished. I’m really lucky that I got to do that and I’m doing it again. I developed a new show for TNT that’s about to go into filming. It’s another Asian American family show. It’s a different view of what we’ve seen of Asian American families, so I’m really excited.

BH: You’ve been on many TV shows, including Dancing with the Stars. If you could only do one (sing, dance, act) besides comedy, which would it be?

MC: I think acting because it’s closer to comedy. It’s closer to what I do as a comedian.

I also just really love it. I’ve gotten to do a lot of different stuff as an actor and that’s really cool. It’s something that I always wanted to pursue and now there’s a lot more there.

There’s a lot more availability, like roles and stuff for Asian Americans and things that I’ve done so I’m really happy about that.

BH: What advice would you give to someone who wants to pursue the arts?

MC: Just get out there.

Whatever that first step is, there’s always something.

Whether it’s productions in school, making things for social media...that is available to us now which is a huge thing... and finding what exactly your passion is. Finding exactly what is driving you — what you want to do. Just taking the first step in discovering who you are as an artist — that’s really important.

BH: There are pictures of you with only a half face of makeup. What does that mean?

MC: It’s just tearing down the barriers of... what beauty is. How we’re regarded so much by the way we look. If we can actually get down to the truth of all of this bullshit, that’s really important. That’s what I try to do — deconstruct things like beauty, weight and the body. Deconstructing things in order to make people feel good about where they are and who they are and not feel that there’s a need to prove something.

Chazen Museum welcomes new director after more than three decades Former director Russell Panczenko gives best wishes to replacement Amy Gilman, reaffirms excitement in leadership change

The Chazen Museum of Art changed its leadership for the first time in over 30 years.

Previous director, Russell Panczenko, had been the director of the Chazen for over three decades. Now ready for retirement, he passed down the role to Amy Gilman. The position is an intimidating role to have — overseeing all operations, from exhibits, acquisitions to caretaking of the collections. Having a doctorate in art history from Case Western Reserve University, Gilman is an ideal candidate for the position, and Panczenko agrees.

“This lady is highly qualified and very experienced,” Panczenko said. “I think she’s the right person to step into my shoes.”

Stepping out of his long-time position is a bittersweet transition for Panczenko, who has encountered both pleasures and sometimes, a slight lack of enjoyment.

While having a position in a field that you love is gratifying, the tedious administrative jobs have become tiring.

Having trade-offs just comes with the territory, Panczenko said.

The museum has seen improvements during Panczenko’s time as director. In the past years, the collection hasn’t just increased slightly, it’s more than doubled.

No doubt helped by the construction of the new building.

Even though Panczenko will no longer be on site, he will always have the Chazen in his mind and in his heart. He said he looks forward to seeing an expansion in scholarly thinking. With the larger collection, the possibilities for this seem to be endless. The collection should be studied, information should be published and bridges should be built with other museum curators. In terms of research, there are huge possibilities for growth, Panczenko said.

The Chazen won’t be the only thought floating around Panczenko’s mind. Art will still be his passion, and so will follow him every where. Now with more free time, Panczenko will be able to put more time into his own photography work.

“At this point, I’m going to have a lot more time to spend with my camera and learning to work with it and do what I like to do,” Panczenko said. “So suddenly

I’ve got a lot of time to myself, which I’m happy about.”

As for the new director, she’s been busy planning her arrival to the Chazen and moving to Madison. Her new position began on September 11. An important part of her new role will include community outreach and strengthening the bond between the Chazen and the outside community, at both the campus and city level.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing what we can do to really continue to engage the student body, the faculty and the community even more,” Gilman said.

“Everyone is invited to an ice cream social on the first Saturday of my time at the Chazen from 1-3 p.m. where I hope to meet a lot of people.”

Connecting with the community is an important step to take before implementing new programs at the museum, Gilman said. She plans to take a step back, learn about the people of Madison and listen to what individuals have to say.

Gilman also plans to support Madison’s art scene outside of the Chazen. A goal of

hers is to stay informed about the local campus life. She and her family also plan on attending local gallery events and exhibit openings.

Staying well informed and introducing herself to the people of Madison will aid in the transition period as she takes on her new role, but problems are bound to occur.

But these situations shouldn’t be looked at as a bad thing, Gilman said.

“Any point in which you have a leadership transition… it is going to cause some differences,” said Gilman. “…that’s going to be the most significant issue that I’ll be working through. Not because it’s necessarily bad, but because it’s the reality of the situation.”

The transition shouldn’t be a source of anxiety for lovers of the Chazen. Even though she hasn’t completed an art project of her own since 2000, her experience will guarantee a successful future for the community, the Chazen and the future exhibits to come.

“I quickly discovered I’m a much better museum person than I am an art maker,” Gilman said. “I don’t make work myself, I just appreciate those who do.”

Hollywood Badgers provide opportunities for students in media fields, majors Student organization builds connections between like-minded academic peers, professionals in production, acting alike

One student organization is helping students increase their chance of finding employment in the entertainment industry by connecting them with industry professionals.

For those seeking a career in media production, Hollywood Badgers can help make your dreams come true. The club helps students make connections with like-minded peers and entertainment professionals. Almost every week the club hosts a speaker, each with unique specializations and insight. The speakers’ occupations range from behind-the-scenes production to actors on the big screen.

“It always baffles me seeing people who are really interested in having a media related job who aren’t in Hollywood Badgers,” said Joseph Hushek, president of the org. “Anyone who’s interested in that should be involved.”

Meetings begin with a recap of industry news, so members can stay up to date on current events. Afterward, the speaker

of the week will give an introduction describing what they do and how they got there and continue on with an informative talk, usually ranging from 30-45 minutes, Hushek said. rap up with a Q&A, and also share their email and welcome students to have an open line of communication.

Getting personal talks from real industry professionals is hard to find elsewhere on campus — but the perks don’t stop there.

The club’s dues — $20 for the semester, $30 for the year — pay for the org’s IMDB Pro account. This allows users to find information otherwise not offered, such as contact information and messaging features, Hushek said.

When the org can’t book a speaker for the week, students come together to get hands-on experience. Collaborations with the communication arts department and photographers allow members to make works of their own.

“We do an iPhone movie contest,” Hushek said. “For one meeting we all get

into groups and every one makes a film on their iPhones in the one-hour time span.

Then they’ll edit them and the winners get a prize.”

For those who aren’t interested in the production side of Hollywood, other activities allow members to think creatively.

The org has pitch contests, where students get together to think of the best possible pitch — for any aspect of production.

This experience will go far for those in Hollywood, where one’s ability to pitch ideas well can make or break a career.

Many students know what type of career they are working toward, some may not want to hear from certain speakers or participate in certain activities. Luckily, the executive board reaches out to members prior to meetings letting them know what will be the week’s topic of discussion.

“We don’t take attendance or anything,” Hushek said. “If we have a speaker who does marketing for someone and you want to be an actor, you don’t have to come.”

The org not only connects students

with professionals but also allows them to connect with each other. Members will form connections based on similar interests and will help each other with personal projects down the road. If someone is interested in filmmaking and another acting, the two usually collaborate to increase their skill levels, Hushek said.

All students with an interest in any aspect of the media industry should consider joining. Some members want to be actors, while some want to be producers or work behind the scenes with lighting and equipment. No matter what path in the industry someone is interested in, there will be a speaker for everyone.

“It’s for people who are interested in working in some sort of media industry… in any way,” Hushek said. “We’re a resource here if you want it and want to be a part of it.”

UW student uses pop-up shop to help Harvey victims Shop focuses on vintage clothing, environmental responsibility

Engulfed in the warmth of the late morning sun, women gasped in front of a full-length mirror and told each other they looked beautiful. They did.

This was one of the primary objectives of Oliva Buchli, a fifth-year student studying fashion design, alongside collecting aid money for the city of Houston in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, alongside pressing further her dream of opening a vintage clothing store, alongside inspiring UW students to shop ethically and recycle clothing for the sake of a sustainable future.

As a transfer student, Buchli has spent much of her time at UW as the sole owner of her clothing store, Olivia’s Vintage. Racks of oversized, patterned windbreakers, retro Badger crewnecks and gentle silk dresses line the walls of her apartment, carefully selected from Goodwill and thrift stores. In the last several months, Buchli has garnered a following of nearly 700 on her Instagram account, many of whom use the post notifications feature to ensure they are the first to know when she posts photos of her latest items.

At her first pop-up shop last Saturday, students combed through jean jackets and flipped through the free books Buchli set out as gifts for her guests. For anyone with a taste for vintage or passion for sustainable fashion, irrespective of style, her shop offered a beautiful, affordable haven.

“I do make my own clothes, but I’m not interested in repurposing clothes that have already been made,” Buchli explained.

“I’ve always been really into vintage clothing, and people were always asking where I got it from, so everything just came together and I started this shop a couple months ago.”

Fast fashion, alive and well along the aisles of retailers like H&M, Forever 21 and the like, strives to strip designs from the catwalk and get them on mannequins as soon as possible. In recent years, this trend has become an environmental crisis — clothes are cheap and fly off the shelves fast, but end up in the trash even faster. To keep up with trends, consumers must make a concerted effort to replace their wardrobe every year, if not every few months. The 14 • badgerherald.com • September 12 2017,

For decades, e-commerce has provided an ecological out — E-bay and Craiglist allowed folks to resell old clothing still in good condition, long before iPhone apps arrived to further simplify the process. In the last few years, Instagram has become another popular platform for users like Buchli to open their closet doors.

Buchli uses Instagram both because of the possibility of reaching out to a wider audience, and the simplicity for the buyer. On average, she posts between six and ten pieces per day, and followers can message her directly from the post indicating their interest in purchasing.

Siting lack of space and slight communication issues with buyers as her only obstacles so far, Buchli plans to continue expanding, with the hopes of eventually breaking away from Instagram.

Thrifty, vintage clothing happens to be in today, even for those without a conscious interest in sustainable shopping, allowing Buchli’s shop to flourish on campus. “Everything I’ve made so far I’m saving up so I can have my own shop in the future,” Buchli says, “and this has been an incredible way to get started working a business.”

Her Instagram bio reads: “Buy from the past to support a better future for the planet.” With initiatives like Olivia’s Vintage picking up speed, a better future may come sooner than we think.

Briana Marela transforms pop, experimental to create her own hybrid Call It Love performer discusses her difficulty in conforming to labels, her bittersweet association with Madison

This will be the artist’s first time in Madison, however, the trip carries a deeper weight than going just for a concert, Marela shared. Just last year, a close friend of Marela, and graduate school student in Madison, took her own life.

“I was looking forward so much to visiting her there, and she had such a really hard year last year and no one really knew. She was in such a hard place,” Marela said. “So it feels kind of sad too to visit this place where I really wanted to visit this friend, and now she won’t be there.”

As Marela wrote and released “Call It Love” later that same year, certain songs off of the album—including “Farthest Shore”— are deeply inspired by the loss and sadness Marela felt after losing her loved one.

Through combining elements of pop, electronic and experimental on “Call It Love,” Marela creates a sound that is completely individual and her own. Much like parts of her identity, Marela said, her music cannot easily be categorized or

labeled.

As a mixed-race woman of color, Marela described feeling both connected and disconnected to two identities, “but being maybe not welcome” as well.

“I’m POC, but I’m mixed race, but I grew up kind of removed from a lot of my POC family; they live in a different country, they live in Peru,” Marela said. “And just being in a lot of white culture, I feel like I’m not white, but I was kind of raised in a ‘white’ way,” Marela said. “Sometimes I feel like my music is in a similar way.”

At its core, “Call It Love: is an album about love, but not in a traditional sense as one may imagine. The artist avoids writing about “love as this heteronormative fairytale fantasy,” and instead focuses on the “many different shapes love takes.”

In doing so, Marela composed a nuanced and cultivated view of love on her third album that expresses just how complicated love is—reflecting on her own views and theories on it.

“That’s very interesting to me, and I have all these funny theories about love and how love and time and creativity are all really tied together in this way where I think it is just this driving force for everything, whether or not we really completely see that,” Marela said. “I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to not write about it in some form.”

Marela gained inspiration over the years from fellow female musicians, such as icons like Bjork and musicians she has toured with, such as Jenny Hval. Marela recalled watching Hval each night and always feeling inspired afterward.

“I look to people like Bjork, for example.

She didn’t make “Vespertine” until she was like 33 or something, and I’m like ‘I have 6 years to make a cool album then,’” Marela said. “I always want my best work to be ahead of me, I think, not behind me.”

The musician hopes to constantly be growing in her field, and to always have her best work ahead of her — while still sticking to her roots and the sounds she is naturally drawn to.

Starting as a child who would create melodies in her head, she turned to singing and playing guitar — following a set ‘singer/ songwriter’ trope or expectation that she said she grew up with in her community.

“I didn’t know that there were a lot of different options for accompanying myself basically,” Marela said. “I didn’t see women my age when I was younger playing in bands and stuff.”

It wasn’t until college that Marela began experimenting with ways to use computers and various other instruments and programs to compose and play her own music.

Creating representation and diversity in

music is crucial to Marela, reflecting on her young life, and she goes out of her way to support and listen to other femme artists.

“Women or femme people or nonbinary people making electronic music is just always going to be probably my jam,” Marela said.

“I was especially moved by Jenny, and also just by people who aren’t afraid to be a true freak and get really weird.”

While Marela will always have a distinct voice and sound, she hopes to continue experimenting with boldness, and “try to be even more unlike” herself, Marela said.

Despite the bittersweet feeling the trip to Madison may bring, Marela expressed excitement about visiting Madison for the first time and plans to visit her friend’s memorial.

“I feel like I just want to be there and hold my friend Megan in my heart. Just really try and like just have some sort of peace,” Marela said. “It’s just nice to be in the same spot she was.”

Executive order to end DACA leaves UW ‘dreamers’ living in limbo

Thousands of undocumented immigrants in Wisconsin now met with unstable employment, educational opportunities

She remembers it in patches — scratches on her legs from the thorn bushes, a stranger carrying her on his shoulders.

When University of Wisconsin junior Karen Peréz-Wilson woke up next to her mother and a group of strangers miles away from the U.S.-Mexico border, the coyotes — those who help smuggle people across the border — had abandoned them. They had promised her mother they would help get them across the border. Instead, they were used as a distraction to get another group across and left for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Her mother had a small backpack with her. Inside, there was a gallon of water and shortbread cake. The bottle of water broke and soaked the food.

Her mother started crying. That was all they had to eat.

At that point, instead of running from immigration, they desperately looked for them. Once they were arrested, PerézWilson’s father — who had already made it to Madison earlier — pleaded that they go back to Veracruz. Her mother wanted to try again.

The second time around, Peréz-Wilson and her mother were the only members of the group who successfully made it past the border. Once on the bus headed to Madison, ICE agents came aboard and started asking people for their IDs. Three-year-old Peréz-Wilson had been sleeping, resting her head on her mother’s seven-month pregnant belly. They decided not to wake her up and walked away.

“We should have been detained,” Peréz-Wilson said. “I always feel like fate wanted us to be here.”

How DACA benefits undocumented immigrants

Peréz-Wilson is one of 11.3 million estimated undocumented immigrants living in the United States, and one of 787,580 undocumented immigrants that stand to be affected by the decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

With President Donald Trump’s Sept. 5 announcement to end DACA, an executive order issued by the Obama Administration, thousands of undocumented immigrants are now faced with the possibility of not being able to legally work and pursue higher education.

The DACA program functions to serve undocumented immigrants who, like Peréz-Wilson, were brought to the U.S. as children.

To be eligible for DACA, applicants must have: - Come to the U.S. before their 16th birthday and lived in the U.S. since June 15, 2007 - Been under the age of 31 when the policy was enacted on June 15, 2012.

- Had no lawful status on June 15, 2012 - Completed high school or a GED, been honorably discharged from the armed forces or been enrolled in school.

- No serious criminal background (had not been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanors, or three or more other misdemeanors).

Under DACA, this group of immigrants — often referred to as “Dreamers” — receive a renewable two-year period of deferred action from deportation, eligibility for a work permit that contains a nine-digit tax I.D. number and the ability to obtain a driver’s license. To maintain DACA status, immigrants must be either enrolled in school or working and continue to stay clear of the 16 • badgerherald.com • September 12, 2017

criminal justice system.

Growing up in Middleton, Peréz-Wilson drove to multiple jobs — where she was paid under the table — in fear of what would happen if she were to be pulled over and have police ask for a license she didn’t have.

That was life before DACA. “When I got the news that I had been given deferred action, I became hopeful for the future,” Peréz-Wilson said. “A four-year university was no longer just a dream — and education has always been a driving force for me. I love school, I want to get my Ph.D., and I think those nine digits really limited me.”

Around the time the DACA program became available UW senior Selina Armenta’s friends were working at their first jobs or on their way to getting their driver’s license. As an undocumented immigrant from Mexico, that wasn’t an option for her.

Through DACA, Armenta was able to obtain a work permit and get her license — two things that were a huge weight off her family’s shoulders as she was able to help out financially.

But while DACA provides some relief to undocumented immigrants, to send in an application containing their name, address and personal information means trusting the federal government with the stability of their lives.

“Even when I was applying [for DACA], I was hesitant.

I wanted to do it, and my mom always told me ‘que sea lo que Dios quiera,’” Peréz-Wilson said. “We don’t want [immigration] to show up at our door one day, and it’s a very traumatizing thing having to explain to your siblings ‘here’s a folder with all the emergency information you need to know should I be placed in this situation.’ And going over that with them is heartbreaking … having your siblings who are U.S. citizens go, ‘but why? You’ve lived here since you were three, you’re more American than some Americans.’”

Recipients face economic hardships

Despite the added benefits, DACA recipients still face financial hardships when it comes to paying for higher education.

As an undocumented student, Peréz-Wilson does not qualify for in-state tuition despite living in Madison since she was three. Since 2015, she has been on an educational leave of absence, working to gather the funds to pay for the cost of out of state tuition.

In 2009, the Wisconsin State Legislature added in state tuition for unauthorized immigrants in the 2009-11 budget. In the 201113 budget, however, it was taken out, causing undocumented students to pay out of state tuition rates for public colleges and universities. At the moment, there are only 18 states where qualified undocumented immigrants are eligible for in state tuition.

“I think at UW, there is a misconception that we have financial assistance, but a lot of undocumented students and DACA students have to pay cash,” Peréz-Wilson said. “A lot of them think ‘Oh, because you’re Latina you get all these scholarships and you get everything for free’ and that is not the case.”

The reality is DACA students don’t qualify for state or federal financial aid, Armenta said. Those who are going to school for free or receive assistance are able to do so through private scholarships or scholarships specifically made for undocumented students.

While Armenta will be graduating this May, her plans to go to law school will have to be delayed because she will have to work extensively to pay for school before her work permit expires.

Facing an uncertain future

Thousands of young, undocumented immigrants like PerézWilson and Armenta are now left feeling uncertain about their futures as DACA comes to an end. While both students are working to renew their DACA status by the Oct. 5 deadline, those whose DACA statuses are set to expire by the March 5 deadline stand to lose their work permits and the ability to safely travel between America and their home countries.

Under DACA, participants can apply for Advance Parole, which permits them to travel back to their home country, and be allowed safely back into the United States.

If an undocumented immigrant remains in the country — with no record of lawfully entering the U.S. — they face steep odds successfully applying for a green card or citizenship.

Having a record of lawful entry into the country, however, opens up the possibility for undocumented immigrants to get approved for a change in status, though it is not guaranteed, Benjamin Harville, UW law professor and director of the UW Law School’s Immigrant Justice Clinic, said.

Both Harville and local immigration lawyer Shabnam Lofti recommend DACA recipients not travel back to their home countries. Even if they were approved for Advance Parole prior to the recent decision, the Customs and Border Patrol retains the authority to determine the admissibility of any person at the border to their discretion.

In addition, Harville said it may be a good idea for current DACA recipients to consult a lawyer and see if they qualify for some other form of relief. While some may have to revert back being undocumented, others may qualify for another status and should start looking at options.

Along with remaining in the country, Lofti recommended staying out of the criminal justice system to maintain a good record. Though both the UW and Madison Police Departments have stated they will not assist ICE in immigration matters — unless the person commits a serious crime or poses a serious threat to public safety — many undocumented students remain fearful of being deported.

Even at the federal level, ICE continues to prioritize threats to national security, public safety, illegal re-entrants and those persons with outstanding orders of removal for enforcement, ICE spokesperson, Carl Rusnok, said in an email to The Badger Herald. ICE will generally not take actions to remove active DACA beneficiaries, he added.

Economic pitfalls to losing DACA workers

Just as DACA recipients will be faced with added challenges as some work permits are due to expire by the program’s conclusion Jan. 1, both local and national economies may also be faced with economic challenges moving forward.

Since DACA recipients have a tax ID associated with their work permit, they pay both Social Security and Medicare taxes. Once their permits expire after DACA comes to an end, they will no longer be able to contribute to the economy, thus resulting in a net lwoss of tax revenue both at the state and federal level.

According to a report by the Center for American Progress, a progressive policy think tank, over the next decade, the U.S. stands to lose $460.3 billion in GDP as a result of removing DACA workers. In Wisconsin alone, the reports projects the dairy state losing $427 million annually by removing an estimated 6,582 DACA workers.

The gradual loss of DACA workers is a loss in multiple ways, Andrew Reschovsky, UW public affairs and applied economics professor, said. Along with losing workers who pay taxes and contribute to the economy, there would also be a loss in the specific skills and training provided by immigrant workers.

“Others might choose to stay here, but work off the books, illegally — [one of the] ways many immigrants have managed to get by,” Reschovsky said. “But the problem is that means they’re also earning less money and paying less taxes, and in most cases, employers would still be paying security taxes ... but not always, so there would be a loss of revenue.”

The economic shock would not be immediate as some work permits will be presumably renewed before the program’s end, Reschovsky said. But, future economic growth would be constrained by not having qualified workers and a well-educated labor force.

In the long run, restricting immigration by throwing out DACA workers or passing legislation that restricts immigration is harmful, Reschovsky said, as the economy would grow less quickly and robustly.

“Typically, the jobs immigrants hold are low-skilled jobs that Americans don’t want. In Wisconsin, we’ve seen that with dairy farmers,” Reschovsky said. “We need to sustain economic growth, which means we need more, not fewer [immigrants]. There isn’t a lot of strong evidence that suggests that well-trained young immigrants are taking jobs of native [born] Americans.”

Hopes of permanent immigration reform

Sticking to his promise to reverse major executive orders under the Obama Administration, Trump ordered an end to DACA, and in his official address, urged Republicans and Democrats to find a bipartisan solution in the six months before the program officially ends.

For some, there remains hope that new legislation will bring permanent immigration reform into law.

In 2001, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and Orrin Hatch, R-Uta., introduced the Dream Act to Congress. The bill attempted to introduce a multi-phase process where young, undocumented immigrants would first be granted conditional residency. After a certain time period and upon meeting specific qualifications, these Dreamers could obtain permanent residency.

Nearly two decades have passed, and several attempts to push the Dream Act through Congress have failed — the last being in 2012, which resulted in former President Barack Obama issuing an executive order creating the DACA program. In light of Trump’s decision, members of Congress have shown willingness to cross the aisle to create a permanent solution for immigration reform.

In a statement, U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., and chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, said he looks forward to working in a bipartisan fashion to advance “humane, common sense legislation” and fix our “broken legal immigration system.”

Earlier in the year, Johnson introduced the State Based Visa Pilot Program bill to promote locally managed guest worker programs. Instead of creating a “one-size-fits-all-federal model,” Johnson recommended states address the shortage of workers in different areas of the economy, and manage visas and allocate them to industries that need workers the most.

While Johnson’s proposal is one example of how states can gain control in managing immigration reform while addressing specific needs for their local economies, a large focus remains on federal-level legislation. Durbin, who originally introduced the Dream Act, was met with bipartisan support after the DACA decision, with prominent Republicans such as U.S Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C, urging Trump to codify the bill into law.

But some experts, such as UW political science professor Barry Burden, believe it is unlikely Congress will manage to approve a DACA replacement in the six-month time frame demanded by President Trump.

“The current Congress has not shown ability to pass significant or controversial pieces of legislation on a partisan or bipartisan basis,” Burden said in an email to The Badger Herald. “Members of the Republican Party are divided on the issue and will have difficulty settling on a compromise.”

In addition to the divisions along party lines and within the Republican Party, Burden added Democrats — though they might work with Trump — might not trust his intentions and could resist other measures, such as border wall funding, that could get attached to the bill.

The other difficulty in addressing immigration reform is that Congress has several big issues to tackle more immediately, Burden said. Between the debt ceiling and the end of the fiscal year approaching in just a few weeks, it’s tough to see where DACA fits among these big items when Congress has not been able to do much of note this year.

In the six months Congress has to pass some sort of replacement for DACA, nearly 800,000 DACA recipients wait in limbo.

“I always pledged allegiance to this flag, I would truly give up my life to fight for this country,” Peréz-Wilson said. “I’ve never been in any trouble, and now this person wants me out of a country that I call home, it’s very hurtful.”

Dating apps allow men to live up to already abysmal expectations Online platforms perpetuate depersonalization of women, sex, relationships while allowing users to hide behind screens

“Aight, I’m not playing games anymore.

Lemme smash.”

What a cordial greeting, 20-something year old male Tinder match, thank you so much for living up to the incredibly low expectations most 20-something year old females currently have for male companionship.

Dating apps such as Tinder and Bumble, paired with sexually frustrated and bored millennials are swiftly killing the dating scene, replacing it with late night hookups and half-committed relationships that end as quickly as they start.

That in and of itself, while possibly confusing to our parents generation, who went out for movies and dinner like clockwork every Friday night during their dating days, is not the most pressing issue. To each his own in the relationship department.

The real issue stems from how these apps allow men to treat women, both while talking online and if a couple ever meets in person.

Although referred to as “dating apps”, the vast majority of users are not using them to date; in fact only four percent of college aged

users report using apps to meet potential dates. One in three women are reported to be against hooking up on a first date with someone they met online, while only one in ten men report feeling the same way.

The disconnect between men and women when it comes to hooking up immediately after meeting in person is a large driving force behind how the apps shape men’s perception of women.

The apps become a tool for the purpose of finessing (often much less elegant or endearing than the word implies), a hookup instead of having a real conversation.

Women certainly use dating apps for meaningless sex and I am positive they have sent equally as horrifying greetings to men.

However, the issue arises when men and society as a whole look down upon them for doing so yet turn a blind eye to the male equivalent.

I’ve seen guys straight up admit to needing rebound sex when they’re asked to get coffee before going back to someone’s apartment to have sex, or lead with the simple demand for nudes.

Ironically, the same men who send the late night “what’re you doing” texts are the ones who turn around and shame women for wearing too tight of dresses, who show their bra straps in school or who have had sex with anyone but them.

The depersonalization of women and of sex through dating apps leads to a strange dichotomy: on one hand women are expected by society to be pure and innocent, a proper lady who doesn’t drop her pants for anyone but her boyfriend or her husband, but on the other hand she’s expected by her male peers to come over at 2 a.m. when he’s lonely and wants some company.

Women are expected to say no, but not to the random Tinder boy who is “just looking to have some fun,” because that makes them boring or magically turns them into a slut who must be sleeping with hundreds of other people, because that’s the only justification behind why she would say no.

Dating apps continue to perpetuate this idea of women by not only focusing solely on enticing pictures and implicitly or explicitly sexualized bios to get the

coveted right swipe from someone you find attractive, but by allowing both parties to remain hidden behind phone screens while they throw insults if the girl won’t sleep with them, or if they decide a good start of a conversation is to compliment a girl’s ass instead of asking how her day’s going.

This is not to say all dating apps are horrible and all guys are using them for is to get in girls’ pants. Nor is it to demonize all men for having inflated egos or slut shaming women for sleeping with other people (or no one) instead of sleeping with them.

Instead, it is to say that dating apps are allowing for the depersonalization of women, sex and relationships, replacing them with an app that gives a platform to the men who think it is appropriate to do any of the aforementioned things.

Just a little hint for those men: it’s most certainly not okay, and you most certainly will not be allowed to “smash.”

High number of mental health services on campus proves you’re not alone, but that’s only half the fight Switching the rhetoric around mental health care from “need-based” to “routine self-care” important for students

I am a freshman in college who looks like a freshman in high school, but I’ve been attending college since I was ten years old, due to a strenuous fight with my mother. Little did I know, the effects that fight would increase my quality of my life, and perhaps even save it.

This was not college in the traditional sense — I went to what my therapist called “college for emotions,” which is how my mother talked me into attending counseling sessions after the loss of a loved one.

Even after the grief faded, I still took advantage of what my therapist had to offer. I wanted to learn how to live my life to the fullest, despite stress, negativity, miscommunication and chemical imbalance — struggle pills can only do so much.

Stigma told me that counseling was for weirdos, the basket cases and the extremely ill. But if one equates counseling to attending university, the equation becomes much simpler.

Higher education is not meant for us to quickly experience in order save the world after a hypothetical catastrophe. Rather, we came to the University of Wisconsin-Madison to learn the skills needed to start our careers and benefit society, hopefully to prevent the hypothetical catastrophe from ever happening.

The stigma against attending counseling and mental health care should be looked at the same way. When the reason for attending counseling sessions shifts from “solely need based” to “healthy and aimed at self-care,” we not only prevent mental breakdowns from ever happening, but we also make it easier for both neurodivergent and neurotypical people to shamelessly learn how to live a happy life.

The first step to shifting the stigma against counseling is to know that needing it does not make you an anomaly. 25 percent of young adults between the ages of 18 to 24 have a diagnosable mental illness and have been treated by a medical professional within the calendar year.

Stress does not discriminate either — in the past year over 40 percent of college students reported having above average levels of stress, and feelings of hopelessness.

The numbers do not lie -- we are all in this boat together. By acknowledging how common these feelings are, it makes getting help less scary. If so many others can do it, why can’t you?

After acknowledging the problem, progressively treating it and preventing further spirals into a mental health crisis is the next step.

Sadly, this is the step that students struggle with the most. While living on campus, 73 percent of students suffering from a mental illness had

a mental health crisis. Only 32.4 percent of those students claim their university knew about their crises. These problems exist, but luckily, so do the resources on campus to treat and prevent them.

Regardless of what treatment you are looking for, University Health Services can affordably fulfill your needs, completely cost free.

Let’s Talk is an appointment-free option meant to talk about a variety of topics, whether it be sadness, relationship troubles, or financial issues.

The informal atmosphere and the variety of locations across campus make this program the easiest way for a quick emotional tune-up when you are feeling low.

UHS provides multiple other resources to maintain mental wellness, whether it be through individual counseling, couples counseling, psychiatric services or group counseling.

Group counseling is especially effective in creating a supportive community of people who struggle with the same issues, which makes them feel smaller and less threatening.

There are also resources for addressing mental health concerns brought on by the campus environment. Alcohol and other drug assessments are done free of charge, and involve personalized treatment plans that provide students with healthy coping mechanisms.

Eating disorder assessments are also available, as is information for diagnoses and how to positively intervene for a friend in need. There are also various resources for the LGBTQ+ community, including gender identity consultations and resources for trans care and name and gender records.

If anything, the amount of resources on campus for mental health upkeep proves that no student is alone. Acknowledging the problem is only one part of the equation, however. In order to make our Wisconsin experience the best four years of our lives, we need to constantly be maintaining and caring for our bodies, both physically and mentally.

By normalizing mental health care and attending counseling sessions, we make self care something that everyone wants to do, regardless of the level of stress or chemical imbalances. College is a pivotal time in our lives, where we learn who we are and what we are meant to do.

So whether you are here to study engineering, biology, English or anything in between, make one thing certain — that you make time to attend college for emotions.

ANTIFA’s violence allows them to be branded as ‘alt-left’

Vigilante characteristics and fringe violent factions of ANTIFA reflect poorly on worthy causes the group protests

ANTIFA has been all the over the news lately. After the violence that erupted in Charlottesville last month, their name has been thrown around quite a bit. Some call them a hate group. Others call them heroes.

Both sides are missing the point. They are vigilantes.

It is important to understand what ANTIFA is: the name is short for AntiFascism. Born as a resistance group in Nazi Germany, it is a broad organization that has been around since the 1930’s.

ANTIFA aims to stop fascism as their name says, but more broadly they are against racism, sexism and all forms of bigotry.

They fashion themselves as a sort of militant group that fights for those who don’t fight for themselves.

In some ways, they are similar to black power groups that used violence to achieve gains towards racial equality.

The history of these types of groups in America is complex. On one side our forefathers themselves used violent methods

to protest things they didn’t agree with, such as tarring and feathering British tax collectors.

One could also consider dumping the tea in the Boston Harbor a riot, although a relatively non-violent one.

These are the sorts of protests that ANTIFA can and does engage in. It’s important to note that they are not always using violent means, it is just one subsection of a large network of activists who have resorted to using more extreme measures.

Unfortunately for all involved in ANTIFA, this group’s more public displays have always been destructive.

Supporters argue that, if alt-right protesters are going to engage in violence and murder, similar to what occurred in Charlottesville, then it’s necessary to have a militant group on the left to protect the groups being attacked.

Cornel West, a renowned social activist, said he felt safer in Charlottesville because of the armed ANTIFA supporters there.

This is the crux of what makes ANTIFA a vigilante group. Relying on armed civilians

to protect protestors in these situations is akin to lighting up the bat signal and hoping Batman shows up.

We all love the Batman movies, but as Americans we have agreed to a social contract that says law and order must be preserved by our police officers and justice system.

I am not naive enough to believe that our justice system and policemen are perfect, far from it.

In many cases, they are the ones doing the oppressing. The deaths and subsequent trials associated with Michael Brown, Freddie Gray and Trayvon Martin, to name a few, have taught me about the flaws of our current system.

This is why reformation of our justice system and continued education and training of our police officers needs to happen now.

Because when we can’t trust our cops or our courts, we take matters into our own hands.

We end up having far left and right protestors staring at each other through rifle scopes, instead of productive discussion or peaceful protest.

I don’t hate ANTIFA. I hate what caused them. It is sad that we even need an antifascist group in 2017, it seems like it should be redundant at this point.

My grandfather fought in Germany to end fascism. I shouldn’t be seeing headlines about armed protesters fighting for the same thing in Charlottesville.

ANTIFA is fighting the good fight, but going about it the wrong way. By stooping down to violence and rioting, they create the opportunity for a false equivalency between them and neo-Nazis.

ANTIFA becomes the alt-right’s war cry whenever they are asked to question their methods. Look at Trump’s statement about both sides if you don’t believe me.

I beg of ANTIFA to keep fighting for what you believe in. But no more violence. No more assault rifles at protests.

Violence only begets more violence.

Last week, President Donald Trump announced his immediate cancellation of a popular deportation relief program known as the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival, which serves to ensure thousands of young, undocumented immigrants retain the opportunity to stay in this country in the hopes of achieving the American dream.

The nearly 800,000 young people who will be impacted, deemed “Dreamers” by the Obama Administration, entered the United States as children or infants when members of their family arrived without proper documentation. In other words, these young people grew up as Americans.

This is their home country, and they were given no choice in the matter.

Under the Obama Administration, DACA recipients were protected from deportation, permitted to not only live in the country but earn high school diplomas, college degrees or join the American workforce.

These young immigrants contribute beyond calculation to their communities, their states and this country.

They do not cost other Americans their jobs or any extra taxes, and crime among 20 • badgerherald.com •Semptember 12, 2017

The suggestion that this may be the case is born not from historical precedent, but inherent the bias and bigotry which has defined the reception of immigrants in America.

During the election cycle, President Trump indicated he would end DACA, but in recent months his rhetoric softened, suggesting he had — perhaps — grown a heart, or at least been paid to. He did not.

As members of a diverse campus and Madison community, who continue to benefit from the contributions of these young Americans, all Badgers have an obligation to speak up for their rights and actively resist.

Whether you notice or not, you are positively impacted by the presence of DACA recipients every day.

Dreamers jump around on gameday, cramp up from taking too many notes in class and order the ridiculously cheap spring roll from the friendly lady on State Street.

Importantly, many DACA recipients also belong to underrepresented communities — this decision will have immense

consequences for Dreamers who are LGBTQ+, racial or ethnic minorities, lowincome, disabled or otherwise marginalized.

These young Americans have grown up as just that – Americans. They are indistinguishable from any other UW student.

They go to work or school, do their job, study hard, pay their taxes and add to the dynamic multiculturalism that continues to make America great.

The only difference between a DACA recipient and any other American is a little slip of paper saying they were born here.

This is much deeper than a political statement or policy move.

The effect of this cruel decision extends beyond statistics and graphs, and intangibles such as hopes and dreams.

This will wrench from the hands of young children their right to their body, and to their home.

Dreams are not illegal. Humans are not illegal. The Badger Herald stands in solidarity with America’s Dreamers.

Raising minimum wage key to a more robust local economy Wisconsin should follow examples set elsewhere and spur economic growth

In the spirit of Wisconsin’s longtime history of activism, labor groups and workers took to the streets of Milwaukee this Labor Day in pursuit of a $15/hour minimum wage.

Last raised by the federal government in the summer of 2007 to $7.25 per hour, the state government has balked at raising the minimum wage statewide for over a decade.

Governor Walker’s refusal to even consider implementing a livable wage throughout his administration has severely depleted the standard of living for citizens statewide.

Inflation corrodes the buying power of everyone but strikes hardest at those with the least ability to pay. Knowing the stone-cold facts on the ground has thrown increased fervor into the labor movement in Milwaukee and across the nation.

The situation has prompted many cities and states to take the initiative , including our very own Madison.

In September of 2016, the Dane County Board overwhelmingly approved a measure to raise the minimum wage for county employees to $15 by the year 2022. The plan raises the wage, today at $12.50, by 50 cents each year until it hits its intended mark.

Critics, typically under the guise of being pro-business, quickly pounce on the notion that higher wages impose an unnecessary burden on businesses. So goes the notion that businesses will bleed jobs because of an inability to reconcile the two ends of the spectrum: wages and profits. Unfortunately for the critics, their vision of economic armageddon has not played out quite as anticipated. Dane County has forged ahead as the top dog in a field of 72 counties for having the lowest unemployment rate.

Since implementing its minimum wage policy just last year, Dane county shaved off half a percentage point from its unemployment rate, down to 2.6 percent.

What’s more, the change in policy has not harmed, but indeed enhanced, Madison’s standing in Wisconsin.

Earlier this year, the Wisconsin State Journal announced that the city brought in more new residents than any other part of the state. A robust minimum wage has bolstered the quality of life and economic opportunity in Madison. In fact, states and localities around the country that have raised the minimum wage have seen a slew of benefits.

In July, CNBC ranked the state of Washington as America’s top state for business, where the minimum wage is $11 per hour.

The basic principle underscoring minimum wage increases is the recognition that the nucleus of economic power has shifted massively from working and middle-class folks to millionaires and billionaires in recent decades. Exacerbated by the financial crisis of 2008, from which Time Magazine found the top one percent of income earners snatched 85 percent of all new wealth generated from 2009 to 2013, this dangerous trend cannot be left unchecked.

Corporate America and its executives benefit handsomely from this inherently rigged system.

It’s no surprise then that calls for reforms have been stonewalled because, quite frankly, money speaks louder than words in this political system. 20th century America yielded unprecedented growth off the back of the strongest middle class in human history.

Higher wages provide more buying power to those who utilize it most.

Increased spending leads to increased demand for labor, spinning off a virtuous cycle of expansion.

Endemic inequality largely neutered that vision and left the United States in an economic malaise, with the weakest postrecession recovery on record.

Lifting the minimum wage to a livable wage has proven to be a case study in smart economics.

Every community, from urban to rural, should heed labor ’s moral crusade in raising the minimum wage.

America thrives when its foundational pillars, based in the working and middle class, are strong.

Expansion from the middle-out and bottom-up was the successful blueprint in an era long gone.

It’s time to give America a raise.

As someone who was once in a sorority, what feels like eons ago, I can safely say that there is a common stereotype when it comes to sorority girls.

Now, I am not going to be one of those people that says they’re all blonde, perky and have an usually high voice, but I do think that there are certain characteristics that one needs to have if they want to be in a sorority.

First, you need to be dedicated to your sorority. I don’t think that outsiders realize how much time it takes to be in a sorority.

From going to philanthropy events, hosting your own philanthropy events, getting skits ready and helping with recruitment, there are so many things that you will invest your time into once you’re in a sorority.

Not to mention chapter meetings, holding an office with the chapter (which isn’t a requirement, but most people do it anyway) and of course still going to school, it takes a lot of work to be a sorority girl.

I think that being dedicated to the things that you commit to is an essential qualification.

Even after college, you still commit to that sorority.

Donating to your collegiate alma mater is not required, but donating to your sorority is (for most chapters, I cannot speak for all).

So, when you join a sorority you’re not just shelling out the dough for four years, you’re paying in for life.

Second, you should be decisive. Want to pay thousands of dollars each year to live in a semi air-conditioned house with a bunch of other girls while you all share a bathroom/common room/lives with each other?

It is a large commitment that you take on, and realistically you only get a week to make that decision.

Being a sorority girl is all about having a certain feeling, feeling that you found the right house and the right sorority for you and committing to that.

This decision is most likely going to be an expensive one, so you better be sure when you decide.

Not being sure of your decision could eventually make you resent your sorority experience.

Finally, you better have thick skin.

Sorority girls get hammered with stereotypes all the time, even though a lot of those stereotypes are also things that could apply to GDIs (gosh darn independent)’s.

You need to be ok with people judging you and mocking your decision to join a “cult.”

You need to be ok with people constantly asking you “why did YOU join a sorority?” which will usually be followed with an extremely passive aggressive compliment/insult.

Not to mention the whole “you just bought your friends” argument that you will literally hear until the day you die.

I don’t know why everyone thinks that when you cram a bunch of girls into a house they all just magically get along and become best friends, because that is totally not the case.

While you might find your best friend in your chapter, odds are you’ll also find five people you cannot stand in the least.

Really, the money goes towards the swag and formals.

You need to be ok with dedicating most of your time to your chapter and to different philanthropy/chapter events.

Do you think that sorority girls like recruitment? No, it’s hell. It is six to eight days of constant singing and smiling while you’re sweating in a matching t-shirt with all your other sisters.

But, they do it because they’re genuinely happy when a new girl finds her home at the same wonderful institution.

That smile you see on all of the new Gamma Delta Iota’s (yes I know that is not a real sorority, it’s called an example) faces when they run up to the house on bid day is exciting.

You can see how happy they are to find a place that also wants them. How much it means to them to be a part of a group of strong, independent females.

Does it make getting up at six a.m. every single morning to make sure the house was ready for that day’s activities worth it?

Kind of. I mean, I am not a morning person, but it was a pretty cool feeling.

Sorority girls have some common characteristics, but that doesn’t mean that they lose any of their individual personality.

It just means that they signed up to wear those two/three letters for the rest of their lives.

Just remember, being a sorority girl doesn’t just last four years, it’s for life.

Schreter: What we learned from Wisconsin’s opening game

All the things that the Badgers’ opening matchup against Utah State managed to reveal about the upcoming season

After coming out of the gate slow and falling behind 10-0 in the first quarter Wisconsin began hitting on all cylinders with a few minutes left in the second quarter. The Badgers then went on an absolute tear scoring 56 unanswered points. Here’s what we learned about are team in all phases of the game.

The defense is legit

Aside from Utah State’s opening 8 play 54 yard drive that resulted in a field goal the defense looked dominant holding Utah State scoreless in the last three frames. Jim Leonhard and his defense looked retooled and ready to go in the second half.

The linebacking core, lead by Chris Orr, performed exceptionally despite losing Jack Cichy to inury and TJ Watt and Vince Biegel to the NFL. The defense held up and looked incredibly stingy and was hardly tested following that first quarter.

Wisconsin might have the best tight end duo in the nation

Preseason All American Tight End Troy Fumagalli certainly did not disappoint in the season opener as he tallied 105 yards and a touchdown in what looked like an effortless performance.

In addition to Fumagalli Zander Neuville, a converted defensive lineman, showed a flash of brilliance with his 28 yard touchdown reception.

These two targets are going to be tough for opponents to handle this season.

Coach Chryst knows how to motivate a team

Whatever coach Chryst said to the team at halftime one thing is for certain, it worked.

They came out with new life in the second half and didn’t take their foot off the pedal until the very end.

They clearly came out flat to start the first half and they weren’t going to do it again. By limiting mistakes on both sides of the ball and grinding their way down the field the Badgers were able to gain total control of the game.

Wisconsin’s rushing game is where it needs to be

Wisconsin has an abundance of rushers this year, with Jonathan Taylor and Chris James leading the team in total rushing yards. During the Utah State game, the Badgers earned a grand total of 234 yards via rushing, and had a grand total of 4 touchdowns during the game.

With James and Taylor alternating who saw the field at different moments of the game,and Bradrick Shaw also seeing some time on the field, the Badgers rushing game is one of the strongest in the Big Ten.

Hornibrook is heading in the right direction

While he might have had a rough start during Friday’s game, quarterback Alex Hornibrook eventually fell into the right groove with his team.

Hornibrook has a dynamic eye, and his vision on the field is superb.

As the season progresses, and Hornibrook becomes more confident in his abilities, the Badgers will be able to improve their passing game. With talented receivers like Jazz Peavy, A.J Taylor and Quintez Cephus highlighting the Wisconsin receiving line, the Badgers have the talent needed to become a great passing team.

Leonhard is making waves early in the season

With less than a year of experience under his belt, defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard showed fans what he has to bring to the table for Wisconsin. The Wisconsin secondary was deadly, earning 3 interceptions and 105 yards on said interceptions.

This Wisconsin defense, especially the Wisconsin safeties, are showing signs of being a very physical team that is not afraid to go for the big plays. If this is how they start the season, imagine how strong they will be at the end of the season.

Overall, while there are still areas that need to be improved for the remainder of the season, it is clear that the Badgers are becoming a dynamic and explosive team. It is going to be hard to stop this team once they find their rhythm with one another, and they are on track to find themselves back in the Big Ten championship game.

We decide which college football conference is the best

Our sports editor ranks the so-called “Power 5” collegiate conferences

College football fans like to think that their conference is the best in the league, but there can only be one division that truly reigns supreme. This week, the Badger Herald breaks down the top five conferences in college football and determines who really is the best in the land.

5: Big 12

The Big 12 began the season 7-3 with losses coming from Texas, West Virginia and Baylor.

Following Texas and West Virginia’s losses they were both dropped from the top 25, leaving only Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

With Oklahoma and Oklahoma State emerging as the only real college playoff contenders, the Big 12 is dealing with a serious lack of depth. They will hold their first ever conference title game this season, which they hope will help them get a team into the College Football Playoff after being left out two of the last three seasons.

4: Pac 12

The Pac 12 has started off hot, with its teams winning 12 of the 13 games they’ve played. The record is a bit misleading though

because many of its teams played easy week one matchups. Conference front-runner USC looked anything but impressive in there opener against Western Michigan and it remains to be seen if Washington can repeat the success it had last year or if it will resort back too its old losing ways.

Aside from these two teams the Pac 12, doesn’t really have another title contender, although teams like Stanford and Washington State may be poised for breakout years.

3: ACC

ACC teams had a 10-4 record opening weekend. The conference took a big hit though, with Florida State not only losing in its opener to Alabama but also losing its Heisman candidate Deondre Francois to a season ending knee injury. Reigning national champion Clemson lost Deshaun Watson to the NFL but the perennial powerhouse seams to have retooled as they looked very convincing in their 56-3 rout of Kent State.

Depth though is what the ACC lacks with Louisville beating Purdue in unconvincing fashion and Virginia Tech still largely unproven. It remains to be seen whether Lamar Jackson, as incredible as he is, can carry Louisville with their many holes defensively.

2: SEC

SEC teams had an opening weekend record of 12-2 with the most impressive being Alabama’s dismantling of previously third-ranked Florida State. Aside from the undisputed top team in the country there is no clear front runner to contend for a title.

With six teams in the top 25 though someone will almost surely step up to challenge the Crimson Tide. The most storied conference in college football may not be as strong as it usually is but it would be a mistake to underestimate the proven track record of the SEC.

1: Big Ten

The Big Ten began the season with a record of 11-3. With four top 10 teams who are all legitimate title contenders the Big Ten is far and away the strongest conference in the country.

Ohio State has emerged as the early favorite but Penn State, Wisconsin and Michigan have all shown that they aren’t far behind with convincing week one performances.

The winner of the Big Ten is a virtual lock to make the College Football Playoff and even getting a second team in isn’t out of the question considering the strength of the conference this year.

Sheffield overhauled, revitalized Wisconsin volleyball New coach brought the Badgers from also-ran to powerhouse in four short seasons

When you think about all of the things that can be accomplished in just four years, revamping a volleyball team and making them a national powerhouse seems like a tough thing to do.

That is exactly what the University of Wisconsin-Madison women’s volleyball head coach Kelly Sheffield has managed to do in a small amount of time. Sheffield didn’t inherit the worst team in the Big Ten, but until he came along, Wisconsin volleyball had been mediocre for several years.

Before Sheffield, Badger volleyball could be classified in one word: “fine.” The team wasn’t awful by any means, but they had a hard time standing out among a Big Ten division that was always filled with awesome talent.

Next to teams like Nebraska, Penn State and Minnesota, Wisconsin just couldn’t hold their own. This caused them to slip both in the Big Ten polls and in the national polls, and many times Wisconsin would find themselves just shy of a playoff spot.

What UW needed were dynamic players, who not just excelled in one or two stat categories, but in many. They needed hitters that could compare with those at Penn State and Nebraska. They needed a setter who had the fastest mind on the court, and they needed someone with an eye who could spot players with those skills.

In came Kelly Sheffield, who was hired after Pete Waite was

forced into resigning back in 2012. Sheffield was the previous head coach at Dayton, and managed to lead the team to an impressive 133-33 record during his tenure.

When Sheffield came to UW, his mind was set on bringing Wisconsin up in the polls, and making sure that he had the support of the UW athletic community. The Wisconsin State Journal stated that Sheffield was concerned about the level of support he would get, and he wanted to make sure that it was the same as other Big Ten powerhouse.

“I think everyone considers this one of the absolute elite jobs in college volleyball,” Sheffield said to Wisconson State Journal. “Was it going to be supported at the level to go out and compete with the Penn States, Nebraskas and Minnesotas? Is it a goal of everybody’s to be a championship program?”

Sheffield had been watching Wisconsin volleyball for a better part of two decades, and was always impressed with the talent that they had managed to recruit. He just knew it was about getting the right combinations of players together that could make this team dynamic.

Sheffield certainly had a talented group of people coming in that year, with athletes like Lauren Carlini and Haleigh Nelson highlighting a great recruitment class for 2013. All that was left to do was wait, and see how this new head coach combined with his team.

Even though Sheffield was an amazing head coach, and

the 2013 recruitment class was probably one of the strongest recruited classes that Wisconsin had ever seen, no one expected the Badgers to do so well in 2013. Within the course of a season, Sheffield managed to take a previously unranked team to the NCAA final match, something that has only been done by three head coaches during their first year of coaching.

From there, Sheffield’s goal was to continue the success that he had managed to build in 2013, and to keep growing the program into a Big Ten powerhouse. With the Big Ten being one of the strongest divisions in the NCAA, Sheffield told UW Athletics that if Wisconsin managed to be a top team in the Big Ten, they would be a powerhouse in the nation.

“The goal is to compete for Big Ten championships -- as it should be at Wisconsin,” Sheffield told UW Athletics. “If you are competing for Big Ten championships, that puts you in the top echelon of teams in the country, and that’s where we want to be. But there’s also a clear understanding that you have to immerse yourself in the process of getting better -that’s where the daily focus has to be.

Flash-foward to 2017, and Sheffield is still working towards his primary goal, and making sure that Wisconsin fans can be proud of the team that he has put together. He has recruited the top players in high school volleyball, and managed to create a dynamic and fearsome team.

Wisconsin even managed to earn the No.1 ranking in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll last year, stealing the spot from teams like Stanford and Nebraska. If Sheffield keeps up this momentum, Wisconsin might become the next NCAA volleyball powerhouse.

Football: Wisconsin starts game strong, loses momentum

The Badgers stalled during the second and third quarters against the Florida Atlantic Owls, but prevailed 31-14

When the NCAA scheduled the University of Wisconsin football team to take on the Florida Atlantic Owls, everyone thought that the game would be an absolute blowout for the Badgers.

I am not ashamed to say that even I thought this game was going to be a walk in the park for Wisconsin. Florida Atlantic is a team who ended their previous season with a 3-9 record, and was just coming off of a 42-19 loss to the Navy in week one.

The first quarter of the game was just as everyone expected, with the Badgers earning two rushing touchdowns with ease. Thanks to freshman Jonathan Taylor, the Badgers were beginning the game with a great momentum behind them, and it didn’t seem as though Florida Atlantic was capable of stopping this Badger offense.

Something changed in the second quarter, and the Badgers began to struggle a bit more than they had in the previous quarter. Alex Hornibrook was having a harder time finding open receivers, and runs weren’t getting the same yardage that they had been just fifteen minutes prior.

Haley Winckler The Badger Herald The Badgers still managed to keep their momentum going, and their 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter quickly became a 24-14 lead by the end of the first half.

It was from there that things truly began to unravel for the Badgers. Runs were yielding far fewer yards per carry, and Hornibrook was struggling to find an open receiver downfield.

By now, most people would have estimated that the scoreboard should have been about 4914 Badgers, and Wisconsin should have started throwing in the second or the third string players. I don’t think that anyone would have imagined that Florida Atlantic would have put up as strong of a fight as they did.

While the Badgers managed to find their footing at the end of the game, it was clear there were still some communication errors that this team needs to fix. With only BYU left before the Badgers begin their Big Ten season, these fixes need to happen fast if Wisconsin wants to find itself in a better position than they started the season with.

This semester, The Badger Herald’s photo editors, Riley Steinbrenner and Sarah Godfrey will be discussing their experiences shooting some of these events and what it’s like to be behind the lens. rest easy knowing we have a safety blanket should Hornbook go down.

Sarah:

Stepping on the field for the first time was a surreal experience. Being able to experience the game while standing on the field, instead of the student section, made it so special. I had a front row seat to the game and the band performances, as well as a 360 view of Camp Randall.

Being able to walk around and take photos throughout the entire game, instead of being crunched up against against other Badger fans on a bleacher, was also a plus. Being on the field did have a few limits though. There were so many photographers and video crew on the field, that there had to be some restrictions on where we could shoot.

“Feet behind the white sideline,” a worker scolded Riley and I, even though we had maybe one toe over the line. But of course we moved back, which allowed another photographer to push closer.

However, later we luckily happened to be on the opposite end zone of most of the other photographers, and took some superb shots of the touchdown heading our way.

Riley:

When covering sports, The Herald socialmedia department likes to update the Instagram account throughout the game.

And if you’ve ever tried to make a post during a football game, you know Bucky wifi is high-speed internet in its most archaic form.

Right before half-time, while The Herald’s Instagram was busy turning gears to read the photos from my camera’s mobile adapter, we heard a roar of cheers from the crowd.

“What happened??” I turned to Sarah.

“I think we intercepted,” she responded, looking at the jumbotron’s replay.

“Ah and we were right there!” Alas, one of the many gives and takes when it comes to sports photography. Sometimes you’ll miss the shot, sometimes you’ll be in the perfect spot.

The rest of the game turned from one that could have potentially been the most embarrassing to photograph (I mean, can you imagine deleting over a hundred photos of Hornibrook getting sacked?) to one that was the most memorable to photograph — Big Red smeared Big Blue 10-59! There’s something about sports photography that makes it so addicting, and you never know that reason until you’ve snapped the perfectly composed and focused exposure.

Freezing the moments of running back Garrett Groshek leaping into the endzone or safety Joe Ferguson making an interception and hundred-yard return is already one of my favorite memories as a Badger.

CAMPUS CONNECFreddy Silva, 20

Freddy is a sophomore from Hell, Michigan, and has found that telling people he is from Hell is not worth the tepid pity laughs he receives, so if asked he’ll say “Detroit.” Freddy is a straight A student with a bright future, but he still complains about his grades with others so he doesn’t feel like the odd man out. Freddy enjoys whatever you wanna do, his favorite food is whatever you’re hungry for. If Freddy had a deadly disease and was forced to choose between two equally experimental treatments, he would die of it because no one made up his mind for him.

Jack Camus, 19

Jack is a Sophomore from Pewaukee, Wisconsin, he is majoring in something, probably journalism, but also maybe English; sometimes he considers RTF, but then he figures the entertainment industry is hard to break into. His parents always told him to “play to his strengths” when looking for a major -- they failed to inform him “playing to his strengths” wouldn’t pay more than $28,000 a year. His hobbies include skipping class, swinging back and forth between academic probations and making bleak jokes to get a cheap laugh.

Jermaine Gordon, 18

Jermaine is a freshman from Milwaukee and intends to enter the School of Business. Jermaine suffers from a rare disease called High AP Scoreitis, a crippling impairment which causes him to enter school in sophomore standing and unable to not mention in conversation.

Jermaine doesn’t let the social impairments of his disability stop him, Jermaine is determined get everything out of school. Jermaine enjoys answering every question in lecture and discussion, arguing with his professor in class and trying to compare scores on his quiz with anyone with the misfortune of sitting near him.

Clay Franklin, 23

Clay is a senior from Atlanta, Georgia, who came all this way to study philosophy. Like most philosophy students, Clay smokes marijuana like he needs it to survive, which might be the case, if he was sober he would probably have to come to terms with the fact that he wants to major in philosophy. Clay’s life revolves around weed in a way that puts white girls and alcohol to shame. Clay doesn’t seem to understand no one is proud of him for smoking ganja regularly, and will happily inform his friends if he has smoked an exorbitant amount of it in a short time, to their complete lack of reaction.

Caitlin London, 21

Caitlin is a junior from New York, New York who is studying nursing and she is so above the drama. Caitlin is so dedicated to avoiding the drama she talks so much about that she avoids hanging out with other girls. Caitlin is in Kappa Kappa sorority. Caitlin’s determination to avoid drama is so great she dates a new guy every few weeks to avoid the drama that comes with a steady relationship.
