Editor’s View

Dear

students, teachers and families Here we go again with another issue of our English magazine. This is number 24 and the second time we edit it in digital format since, with the budget cuts, we can not afford to edit Bacon & Eggs in paper (as we have done for more than 20 years!) Anyway, we keep on working so as to show you the work done by students. Next year we will have number 25, and we hope you feel encouraged to participate in this special issue as we will be celebrating our silver anniversary!

english department news 1st YEAR ESO TRIP

F

or the first time at Infante this year we went on an English Camp with 1st year ESO students. The place we chose was Moraira, a beautiful village on the coast of Alicante, full of English speaking foreigners and locals used to people speaking this language. 3

The aim of our camp was to develop students’ skills in English while enjoying an extracurricular atmosphere so much needed among 1st year teenagers who’ve just arrived at this high school.

1st YEAR ESO TRIP

We had such a variety of activities….! Hiking to a summit where we were delighted with astonishing views, playing beach volley every day, treasure hunt within the village, herbal workshop, talent shows, drama activities…..

4

Some of the students hunting for the treasure

But, the most important thing is that we had a great time, students got to know each other better and discovered that English can also be a lot of fun. Mª José Balanza and Rosa López

In the past there wasn‛t TV or if there was a TV, it was in black and white. At this time people preferred going out and enjoying themselves with toys of that time. But increasingly the new technologies are more present in each activity that we do. One of the new technologies is TV. The TV is turning into an indispensable thing and is replacing street activities. Fran Pérez Bermejo (3º A)

Most people use social networks, especially teenagers. We are used to them; nowadays we couldn‛t live without social networks. They are good: we can chat to friends, share information and photos, talk to people p from other countries…but s sometimes social networks n become a big b problem. Some people p waste a lot of o their time in 25 facebook, f twitter, tuenti t and they aren‛t a conscious of o that. In USA experts have said e that addiction to t social networks exist. Hence I think that we can use them but just moderately. You‛ll know if you are a social networks slave when you answer these questions: -How often do you use social networks? Do you waste a lot of your time every day by using social networks? -Could you be a week without social networks? If you couldn‛t do that, how long could you be without using social networks? By answering these questions you‛ll see if you are a social networks slave or not. It is up to you. Marisol Rodríguez Alcaraz, 3ºA

Are you a shopping slave?

Nowadays there are a lot of shopping slaves because of the publicity. Everybody wants to buy what it‛s advertised on TV, newspapers, billboards and on the Internet and they always want to buy the latest things. These people are shopping slaves. Are you one of them? 1. There is a new mobile phone on the shops, it‛s very expensive and you have recently bought a new one. Would you buy it? Yes/No/Maybe

2. When you go shopping do you always pay attention to brands? Yes/No/ Sometimes 26

3 3. You watch an advert on T TV. There is a beautiful woman/ m man using a cream that leaves y your face very well. Would you b Yes/No/Maybe buy it? 4 4. Next season a kind of shoes that you don‛t like will be fashion. Would you buy them? Yes/No/Maybe Most of yes: You are a shopping addict. The most of the time, you buy things that you don‛t need or even you don‛t like. Control yourself! Most of maybe or sometimes: You like shopping but you normally buy the things that you need or you like. Good way! Most of no: You only buy the things that you really need. You will never be ruined!

Sara Egea Rodríguez 3º AB

Are you a football slave? Watching a live football match is really exciting but can be very expensive. If you want to see your favuorite players you must pay large amounts of money. For example, a ticket for MadridBarça can cost from 100 to 2000 heroes or for the champions league final between 500 and 5000 euros. In a normal day, any first division team can get up to half a million euros. For many people, football is their hobby and they spend their weekends watching football on TV, in the stadium or listening to it on the radio. Have you got enough money ? 27

BOOK REVIEW 28

Title: Three Meters above the Sky Author: Federico Moccia Characters: Baby, Stephano Maccini Events: Baby meets Step and, in spite of their problems, they fall in love and have a love story. Recommendation: for teen girls Three Meters above the Sky is a beautiful story between two complete different teenagers Baby is the perfect daughter, responsible and good student and Step is a violent and cheeky teenager. They have to fight for their love and for their differences. I recommend this book to teen girls. It‛s a story like Romeo and Juliet. I really liked this book. Maria Balsas Martinez 4º D

FILM REVIEW “Inglorious Bartards” Inglorious Bastards is the story of a p partisan warfare against the Nazis d during the German occupation in F France, A At the beginning of the movie, a Nazi p patrol that was searching for Jews, f found Soshanna‛s family and killed them. B But the girl could escape and ran away f from the slaughter. Y Years later, an American first lieutenant, Aldo Raine, recruits a team of soldiers with the goal of killing all Nazis they can. Along the movie, both stories come together, the two parts with the same purpose: revenge. When I saw it for the first time, I fell in love with it. The script is brilliant. The actors are really good and the story, which tells us an alternative end of The Second World War, is one of the best stories that I‛ve e ever seen. I recommend it to all p people who like war movies. Surely, I see it more times. The next one I‛ll w be the fifth time! will Javier Tapia 4º B

1st Year Bac.Research Programme Schönbrunn S chönbrunn Palace Palace is a summer residence

30

in Vienna, Austria. One of the most important cultural monuments in the country, since the 1960s it has been one of the major tourist attractions in Vienna. The palace and gardens illustrate the tastes, interests, and aspirations of successive Habsburg monarchs. The name Schönbrunn (meaning “beautiful spring”), has its roots in an artesian well which water was consumed by the court. The emperor ordered the area to be fenced and put game there such as pheasants, ducks, deer and boar, in order to serve as the court‛s recreational hunting ground. In a small separate part of the area, “exotic” birds like turkeys and peacoks were kept.

Following the downfall of the monarchy in 1918 the newly founded Austrian Republic became the owner of Schönbrunn Palace and preserved, as a museum, the rooms and chambers. After World War II and during the Allied Occupation of Austria (1945–1955) Schönbrunn Palace, which was empty at the time, was requisitioned to provide offices for both the British Delegation to the Allied Commission for Austria and for the Headquarters for the small British Military Garrison present in Vienna. Later it was used for important events such as the meeting between John F. Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev in 1961. UNESCO catalogued Schönbrunn Palace on the World Heritage List in 1996, together with its gardens, as a remarkable Baroque ensemble and example of synthesis of the arts.

Great Wall of China is a fortification sited around China frontiers which was built to separate the states which constituted China and to protect the borders of its territory because the nomadic groups of Mongols attacked the Chinese empire. It麓s settled from the Yalu River to the Gobi Desert. The wall began to be built in the fifth century before Common Era; however, when the unification of China was carried out in 221 BCE, the most important part of the Wall was built by the first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang. A survey has concluded that the Wall measures about 8851Km. The materials which were used to build the wall were very different. These depended on the site where the fortification was being built. The rampart is a very big cemetery too, because the constructers were buried around the Wall. While some portions north of Beijing and near tourist centers have been preserved and even extensively renovated, in many locations the Wall is in disrepair. The fortification was chosen like one of the Wanders of the World in 2007. Enrique G贸mez Imbern贸n (1潞 Bach) 33

THE EMPIRE STATE The Empire State Building is the most famous and beloved building of New York. It was opened on May 1, 1931. For 40 years it held the title of world‛s tallest building until 1972, when the twin towers of World Trade Center were built. It was built at great speed, with an average of 4.5 stories per week, completed in one year and 45 days. It measures 443.2 meters high and has 102 floors. Over 2.5 million people visit the building every year. 34

In 1964 lights were added to illuminate the top of the building at night, the colours are chosen to match seasonal and other events, such as St. Patrick‛s Day and Christmas. Over the years, more than thirty people have committed suicide from the top of the building. The first suicide happened even before it was finished, by a worker who had been dismissed.

Chopin: A Romantic Life Fryderyk Franciszek, Chopin was a composer and virtuoso pianist of French parentage. He is considered a romantic music master and his music is very estimated by musicians and all music lovers. He was born near Warsaw, Poland in 1810 and he started his piano studies with his sister, Ludwika. His talent stand out early. At the age of seven, he composed his 42 first composition and when he was eight, he could play, improvise and compose with mastery and people begun to call him “child-prodigy”. He continued with his studies and his compositions and he won a big fame on his country and on the music‛s world. In September 1831, Chopin arrived in Paris, becoming one of the expatriates of Polish Great Emigration, and he would never return to Poland. In February 1832 he gave a concert and he stole the hearts of the public. Schuman, the composer, had written “Hats off, gentlemen. A genius” In Paris, Chopin found artists and other important company, and opportunities to exercise his talents. He met Hector Berlioz, Franz Liszt, Vincenzo Bellini, Felix Mendelssohn, Heinrich Heine, Eugène Delacroix, Victor Hugo, Honoré de Balzac, and many other people.

In 1836 he met the author French and feminist Amandine Aurore Lucille Dupin, the Baroness Dudevant, known by the pseudonym of George Sand. Later, they started a relationship although they didn‛t like each other when they met for the first time. Fame and great compositions of Chopin grew up but his health got worse. In 1838 his doctor recommended him the climate of Majorca and he went in winter that year with Sand. But the climate was horrible and his health got worse and worse. His illness took form on his music where we can find a profound melancholic sentiment and the hope of the future. They returned to France in 1839. In 1846, his relationship with Sand split up because of her novel Lucrezia Floriani where she criticized Chopin. In February 1848 he gave his last Paris concert. He died in his apartment at place Vendôme in 1439 in company with his sister 43 Ludwika. Chopin‛s disease and the cause of his death remained unclear and consequently have become a matter of medical argument. His death certificate stated the cause as tuberculosis. In 2008 an alternative cause of Chopin‛s death would be proposed: cystic fibrosis. He was buried in “Cimitière de Père-Lachaise” and his heart rests in Poland. He wrote piano sonatas, mazurkas, waltz, nocturnes, polonaises, études, impromptus, scherzos and prèludes. Although, perhaps his most famous compositions were Fantasia impromptu and his sonata op 35 where we can find the well known Funeral March.
