Hello and a huge welcome to all of you: our members, guests, speakers, exhibitors, and sponsors here at the BACN Autumn Aesthetic Conference 2023!
Our annual Autumn Aesthetic Conference is always a happy event when hundreds of BACN nurses arrive from across all four corners of the UK, to meet up with friends, make new ones, share their experiences, and take away newfound knowledge to put into practice.
It is a buzzing event full of passion and hunger; passion about your specialty, passion in supporting each other and in sharing; passionate about regulation and raising the standards; hungry to learn, to lead, to teach and to improve.
Since our 2022 Conference we have had a busy and enjoyable year full of wonderful engaging webinars and Instagram lives, regional and local events, and our second-annual Spring Symposium which was held in London this past April!
Our Regional Leaders, led by Management Committee members Lisa Feliz and Clare Amrani, have been working so hard this past year with lots of regional meetings, lunches, dinners, and zoom calls to bring the local leads together. Huge thank you to all of you who are leaders – you have yourselves created a vital role within the BACN structure that we could no longer do without.
Meanwhile, the BACN Management Committee has been working away in
the background, alongside the Bristol HQ office team led by (a very patient) Head of Operations Gareth Lewis and steered by CEO Paul Burgess.
Since publishing the BACN Professional Code of Conduct, we are now finalising the BACN Aesthetic Nurse Competency Framework which will be complete in the next few months. This is thanks to the dedication of the Competency Committee and Management Committee member Anna Baker who has led the project throughout its course.
Yet again, we celebrate another BACN nurse winning Aesthetic Nurse of the Year at the annual Aesthetics Awards. Congratulations to Mel Recchia! Many other BACN members received awards in categories across the board and all deserve applaud and thanks for representing the best of the best.
We know how much uncertainty there is around regulation at the moment, and we will keep in touch and bring you up to date as correct information is released. The latest DHSC consultation was published on 2nd September 2023, with links to the consultation shared across BACN communications and social media.
Currently there is a DHSC-led 8 week public consultation underway looking at procedures, risks and personnel carrying out aesthetic procedures. This is a vitally important consultation for us all and members are encouraged to respond, and we will be helping you on this with guidance and our collective
response in due course. We will be evidencing that medical aesthetics be in the hands of regulated clinicians only.
Our conference this year looks at a wide range of topics which we hope you will find interesting and useful when incorporating into your daily clinic. We want you to return to your practices more confident, able to apply new and innovative methods and learning, and show your patients you are informed, knowledgeable and a specialist in what you do. We encourage sharing, talking, challenging, debating, and promoting the position of the professional specialist Aesthetic Nurse.
A special thanks must go out to our wonderful speakers for the generosity of their time and in sharing their expert knowledge and ideas with us, and we are especially proud of all the nurses who will be on our conference stage over the next two days. Likewise, a huge thank you to our endlessly supportive conference sponsors and exhibitors. Please go and meet them during the breaks as they are only here for you!
I would like to extend a huge thank you to our incredible team at HQ - Head of Operations Gareth Lewis, Marketing Manager Bec Coleman, Membership Administrator Abi Geran, and our new Project Coordinator Jessica Cimetta. The team have organised and managed every part of this wonderful conference - all you see happening and lots more you don’t see behind the scenes.
I’ve been asked to plug our conference app
too – it has a lot of smart features, and really adds to the full conference experience. A QR code to download the app can be found on the next page.
Please enjoy yourselves, introduce yourselves, and look after those who are new! Your Regional Leaders will be looking for you to say hello.
Happy Conference!
Warm Regards, Sharon
Navigating the Regulatory Landscape: Updates
In this presentation, Kara Huggins will showcase how she approaches profile balancing for men and woman, with a focus on the power of the chin. She will explore what makes an ‘ideal’ profile for both of the sexes and how this can be achieved with careful placement of filler to balance and enhance facial proportions. Kara will discuss why she uses the volumizers STYLAGE® XL & XXL by VIVACY for enhancement of the chin and what the main rheological differences between the two are.
Led by expert speakers, including a medical negligence specialist and a VAT accountant for crucial financial considerations, attendees will gain valuable insights into recent updates. From shifts in licensing requirements and safety standards to new regulations affecting procedures and practice, this presentation offers a comprehensive understanding of compliance in the rapidly evolving medical aesthetics industry.
Stay ahead of the curve and prepare for the future of medical aesthetics by staying informed on the latest regulations that will shape the way nurses work. Join us for this indispensable opportunity to equip yourself with the knowledge needed to thrive in the changing regulatory landscape.
We are in a fantastic position as health care professionals to be able to identify and help our aesthetics patients to look and feel so much better. We know we can give them so much more time and space to felt listened to and understood. So it is not a leap to help support them through their perimenopause and beyond. However, do you feel you just need some more guidance on how and what you can do within your scope of practice to support them. Dr Mayoni Gooneratne will cover some simple ideas to help you identify and help your patients who are experiencing symptoms.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: What to Consider When Investing in Lasers, Lights and Energy Based Devices
Lisa will be concentrating on mid face rejuvenation. This is an area she likes to treat as it is generally is most effective place to start. Lisa states, “For a patients initial consultation, I see this as a starting point for them to get to know me, build trust and communicate their wishes and expectations. It is here we discuss the journey, the reality of expectations, and how long it will take to get there. It’s also, importantly, the cost for them. When treating my patients, I never take short cuts, I still take a breath and have never lost the feeling of wanting to get it right. I’m never complacent. Every treatment is a new challenge and I aim to build on treatment and relationship with my patient.”
HIT™ (Holistic Individualised Treatments) is a patient-centric and sciencebased approach, leveraging injectors expertise and Galderma aesthetic collection, to create individualised treatment plan.
In this session we will focus on Bright Eyes – a treatment to rejuvenate the upper face including the tear trough, temple and glabella utilising the Restylane collection of dermal fillers and Alluzience, the latest innovation in neuromodulators by Galderma.
In this talk, Dr John will discuss his experience in buying and running lasers and energy based devices in his busy practice, based in Bristol. Quinn Clinics now houses over 20 devices, ranging from Hydrafacial to Ablative CO2.
You may expect an honest and straightforward, “no BS guide” to what to look for, when considering adding devices to your practice: what is realistic and what to look for and what to avoid.

Over recent years, lip augmentation has veered into an era of excess. We‘ve witnessed an influx of overfilled lips that has led to severely unnatural results, and it’s time to reflect on what has caused this shift.
This phenomenon can be attributed to a drift in perception among practitioners and patients, compounded by inadequate training. Consequently, we’re dealing with an epidemic of ‘filler migration,’ or “filler spread’ which is often just the result of injecting the wrong patient, the wrong product, the wrong volume, or using the wrong technique. It is our duty as medical professionals to strive to deliver optimal results for our patients.

In this lecture Frances will present on how she has developed a new business within her aesthetics practice through developing multiple skincare brands that have seen her business become more sustainable and less dependent on only her skills and expertise. She will focus on how a hands-on practitioner can become an ambassador for a bigger business, a mentor for employees and continue to earn more profit, increased personal time, and ensure her business can thrive and deliver a passive income beyond retirement without having to continue to work 24/7. Frances will explore why entrepreneurship as well medical skills are important for healthcare professionals wishing to build a business which can grow independent of them.
Natalie Haswell will talk through the Mode of action of HArmonyCa™, Science behind HArmonyCa™, Dual action of HArmonyCa™ and how calcium hydroxyapatite stimulates collagen, Safety profile, Patient satisfaction, and she will showcase the Allergan Aesthetic new patient Education and Consultation app.

Vascular adverse events are rare, but the subject but causes much anxiety. If injecting dermal fillers, it’s a reality everyone must face and good training to minimise and tackle ischaemic injuries are a must. The presentation will provide an overview of the current evidenced base on mechanisms leading to tissue ischaemia after dermal filler, and the significance of each. Learn how to establish the extent of ischaemic injury, through proper assessment of tissues and adjacent areas based on anatomy. Through understanding the extent of ischaemia it will become apparent whether the hyaluronidase has worked, or whether the ischaemic injury has progressed. Certain key areas of the face will be used to illustrate points to aid understanding.
This is an area where we are still learning, and the goal is to treat effectively and with as minimal tissue damage as possible.

Two Decades of Treating HIV Related Facial Lipoatrophy in the NHS, our Experience
HIV associated Lipodystrophy Syndrome is an iatrogenic condition associated with Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) which causes fat gain, fat loss and metabolic complications. Between mid-1990s and early 2000s AZT (zidovudine. Retrovir) and d4T (stavudine. Zerit) were part of ART prescribed to treat HIV infection and reduce morbidity. These drugs historically are associated with HIV Related Facial Lipoatrophy. Despite switching to a less aggressive ART regimen the prevalence of lipoatrophy is still high among many long-term survivors.

Beyond Monotherapy: Amplifying Results using Combined Modalities for Aesthetic Treatments with Live Demonstration
The loss of facial fat can be disfiguring, socially isolating and stigmatising possibly resulting in the disclosure of HIV status, therefore correction is very important for those affected. New-Fill™ (Poly-L-lactic Acid) has been available as a safe and evidence based treatment since the early 2000s. Facial Lipoatrophy (New-Fill™) services in the NHS were suspended during COVID-19. Challenges due to various restrictions impacted the service at this time. We have had two very different experiences in North Manchester and London.
In this session, Aine Larkin will share with you her own insight and knowledge of BELOTERO Revive. Aine will examine what makes this skin booster different and how she achieves the optimal clinical outcomes that her patients adore. Aine’s passion is a consequence of the results that she can achieve for her patients with BELOTERO Revive. This will be evident as Aine discusses injection technique and her own patient case studies to support clinical learning.
This session delves into the promising realm of ‘Beyond Monotherapy’, where the power of synergy through combining various aesthetic techniques is harnessed to amplify and optimise treatment outcomes.

Off-Licence Toxins: Treating the Whole Face with Live Demonstration
Botulinum Toxins have emerged as indispensable tools in the realm of aesthetic medicine, yet achieving consistent and satisfactory outcomes can pose a formidable challenge. Variations in patient anatomy, muscle movement, skin quality, injection placement depth and location, and units given can all influence results. Manufacturer training often confines practitioners to licensed injection points, limiting their ability to address diverse indications.
Join us as Frances Turner Traill and Sharon Bennett share their expertise in treating aesthetic patients with Neurotoxins. They will delve into the art of injection placement, discussing both licensed and off-label techniques, and unveil the secrets to achieving heightened patient satisfaction.

In parallel, Julia Hart introduces an exciting frontier in Aesthetic Medicine: Ultrasound. While previously regarded primarily for complication management, Ultrasound has evolved into a transformative tool for refining treatment strategies. Drawing from her extensive experience, Julia showcases how Ultrasound can be harnessed to evaluate complications, map vessels before dermal filler and thread placements, and aid in skin lesion diagnosis. Notably, Julia presents a compelling case where “facial asymmetry due to abnormal muscle contraction” was effectively corrected using ultrasound-guided botulism injections.
The eyes and hair are profoundly important for patient’s seeking to feel ‘less tired’ or look fresh and rejuvenated. Polynucleotides offer a clinically proven treatment option that addresses these concerns directly and can be used in combination with other modalities for a synergistic effect (PhilArt Eyes specifically for the periorbital region & PhilArt Hair for eyebrows and scalp).
Dr Vikram Swaminathan will discuss both treatment options and protocols as well as recent insights from in-clinic case studies and published data.

Ultrasound in Aesthetics: Effectively Prevent and Manage Complications to Improve Patient Safety
Polynucleotides are an essential regenerative tool for practitioners looking to enhance aesthetic results. They work by stimulating fibroblasts to repair damaged and aged cells through a series of injectable treatments. We’ll share the multiple clinical studies that support their efficacy for use on the skin, hair, body and female intimate area, while explaining the protocols for optimum results and a live injection streaming. This is a not-to-be-missed talk if you’re keen to keep up with patient demand for regenerative aesthetic solutions.
Ultrasound is not just the future of aesthetic medicine, it is very much the present. In this seminar, Dr Rowland-Warmann will discuss how you can make use of it in your aesthetic practice and improve care for your patients.
