OCTOBER 2022

THE BEAT

We have been blessed with ongoing, beautiful, summertime weather as we head into October, and I am personally blessed to see so many dancers in Dress Code!! This makes my heart happy as teaching responsibility and accountability are important factors to making our dancers the best they can be in

This month we will continue to promote proper dress code, with the added reward of an Ice Cream Social Party to the class with the BEST dress code participation! Keep up the great work dancers (and parents) and be the best you can be!

Page 2 Passport Books are coming home starting in October for our younger students. This includes dancers in our Creative Movement, Pre-Ballet, Pre-Ballet/Tap, Pre-Hip Hop, Ballet Basics, Ballet/Tap, Ballet/Jazz, Hip Hop Basics, Hip Hop/Flip Flop, Broadway Bound, and STARS 101 & 102 classes. Passport Booklets highlight skills the dancers are working on in class and teachers recognize students' diligence toward completing the skills by placing stickers in their booklets. These have been a big hit with our young dancers in the past! Please help us in teaching your child about responsibility by assuring they bring the Passport Booklet to class every week to earn stickers and recognition and that the booklet does not get left behind in the classroom or cubbies.

DON'T FORGET YOUR SHOES!

DRESS CODE

Is your dancer dressed appropriately for class? We are strictly enforcing dress code this year, so make sure your dancer comes to class with the required dancewear. Proper dress code allows our instructors to see body lines and correct technique, keeps our dance floors clean and dirt free, and helps your child to focus on classroom instruction.

Please see our Dress Code HERE

In addition to proper dancewear, your child should come to class with the required dance shoes! We have donated our supply of loaner shoes, so if your child forgets to bring their shoes to class, please note that there are no longer shoes to borrow at our front desk. Dancers may dance barefoot if they forget their shoes, but please remember to bring this important dress code item every time you come to the studio!

Still need to purchase shoes? Check out Stage Left Dancewear (open daily, 3:00 to 7:00 and Saturdays, 10:00-2:00) for ballet, tap, jazz and contemporary shoe options!

HAIRSTYLE REQUIREMENTS

Your dancer should come to class with hair in a bun (ballet classes) or pulled back in a ponytail/away from the face for all other classes. Hair Kits, containing hair elastics, bobbie pins and hairnets, are available for purchase at the front desk for $6.00 for anyone who forgets to do their hair before class! Hair kits will be charged to your payment method on file in your Jackrabbit portal.

Teacher Spotlight

DID YOU KNOW???

Miss Tani has been dancing since she was six years old and teaching dance since she was 16! She was a student here at Backstage and also danced with the competitive team program!

Tani attended Cornish School for the Arts in Seattle, where she received a degree in Visual Communication in 2009. She also worked with several professional dance groups in the Seattle area during her time at Cornish. After college, Tani worked in graphic design for a number of years before returning to what brings her the most joy-teaching dance!

Tani teaches all styles of dance and levels at Backstage, working with students in our recreational, STARS, and Signature Team programs. Tani has worked with many awardwinning competition groups and has received numerous recognitions for her choreography. While teaching remains Tani's primary role at Backstage, she also does graphic design work for Backstage and Stage Left Dancewear, and coordinates costuming for our competition teams.

In her free time, she loves to travel and taste test new cuisine. Baked goods are always a favorite!

Again this year, Backstage would like to partner with you on your parenting journey! We will inform you of parenting workshops and speaker series that may be of interest to you, and hope to bring you some of our own events throughout the year.

Back by popular demand, ParentMap welcomes Sam Goldstein, Ph.D., and Robert B. Brooks, Ph.D.! In their 2021 ParentEd talk, they explored the seven essential human instincts powering tenacity, the key personality trait that prepares kids for lifelong happiness and success. This year, they will focus on resilience, the conditioned process of competent functioning in the face of duress or adversity.

During their Oct. 12 ParentEd talk, Goldstein and Brooks will share strategies parents can employ to nurture a resilient mindset and behaviors in themselves and in their children.

Win an Amazon gift card! ParentMap is giving away one $100 Amazon gift card at each ParentEd Talks event. Only attendees of the live event are eligible for the prize, and the winner will be drawn at the end of each talk.
