IS IT WORTH STORING MY BABY’S CORD BLOOD?

By your second or third trimester, you will be faced with several important decisions to make, one of them being to store your baby’s umbilical cord stem cells. It might get overwhelming amidst all of your decision planning. Fret not! We’ve put together an extensive guide to umbilical cord banking to help you make an informed decision by understanding the potential benefits, processes and considerations in order for you to decide whether you should store your baby’s umbilical cord stem cells.

What Is Cord Blood? Cord blood, also known as “placental blood”, is the blood that remains in the umbilical cord and placenta following the birth of a baby and after the umbilical cord is clamped. Cord blood is a rich source of Haematopoietic Stem Cells (HSCs) which are responsible for replenishing blood and regenerating the immune system. It can be used to treat over 80 types of diseases1 such as leukaemia, lymphoma and thalassaemia, as well as metabolic and immune disorders.

Why Should I Store My Baby’s Cord Blood? In recent years, umbilical cord banking has become an essential part of birth planning, as there is only one chance to collect your baby’s cord blood: minutes after birth. Choosing to store your baby’s cord blood is a form of biological insurance for your entire family, as this guarantees readily-available and exclusive medical resources for your family in the years to come and offers you a peace of mind with just one decision.

An increasing number of parents are also choosing to store their baby’s cord lining. Cord lining is a sheet-like membrane from the umbilical cord that contains a high concentration of 2 types of stem cells, namely Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) and Cord Lining Epithelial Stem Cells (CLEpSCs). These regenerative stem cells are harvested and extracted using a patented CellOptimaTM technology. They are the ‘muscle-forming’ and ‘skin-forming’ building blocks in the human body which have shown great potential in aiding the repair of injured tissues and organs. Cord lining stem cells also have immune-modulating characteristics, which allow for less stringent matching between donor and the patient, making them suitable for both your baby and other members of the family. By storing a combination of HSCs, MSCs and CLEpSCs, you are availing your children and family to be part of a medical revolution with access to the growing applications of stem cells and the therapeutic potential they hold.

Public vs. Family Cord Blood Banking Cord blood was once considered a medical waste and was usually discarded after birth, but parents can now choose between donating it to the public bank or storing it privately for your family’s exclusive use. Before deciding on the best choice for you and your family, here are some common myths and misconceptions when it comes to choosing between a public or a family cord blood bank.

MYTH #1 I can always retrieve my donated cord blood from a public bank, there is no point in storing my baby’s cord blood privately.

FACT 75% to 80% of cord blood donations do not meet the storage criteria2. Prior to storing the cord blood, samples are taken for quality testing and the public cord blood bank will only process and store cord blood donations that have a higher probability of being utilised. A strict storage criteria based on the number of total nucleated cells, number of stem cells and cell viability leads to a high discard rate in public cord blood banks, as over 75% to 80% of cord blood donations do not meet the storage criteria. In the event that the cord blood unit is successfully stored, there is no guarantee that the unit is available for the family and child when the need arises. When parents opt for a family cord blood bank, the family is usually informed on the criteria for any rejection of samples and will be able to make an informed choice to continue with the storage process. Once stored, the cord blood sample is readily available and can be quickly retrieved by the family for autologous (where the donor and recipient are the same individual) or allogeneic (where the donor and recipient are different individuals, such as siblings) transplants.

MYTH #2 It is free to retrieve a cord blood sample from a public bank.

FACT It can cost up to $27,000 to purchase a cord blood sample3. While it is free to donate your baby’s cord blood to a public cord blood bank, you will relinquish all rights to access your baby’s cord blood unit as it goes into a database where the cord blood unit will be released when a match has been found and the patient needs a transplant. Therefore, should a time-critical situation ever arise, the increased waiting time and search for a guaranteed match can be psychologically stressful for the family if the unit is no longer available. Furthermore, if your child’s donated and stored cord blood unit is no longer available, it can cost up to $27,000 to purchase another matching cord blood unit from the public cord blood bank3. On the other hand, a family cord blood bank stores the cord blood unit for your family’s exclusive use and it is usually released at no cost to the parents, thus giving you a peace of mind knowing that you have a precious medical resource that is readily available for you and your family, should they ever need to use it.

MYTH #3 Family cord blood banking only makes sense if there is a history of blood diseases in the family.

FACT Apart from treating over 80 diseases1 such as leukaemia, lymphoma, and thalassemia, cord blood can also be used to treat metabolic and immune disorders. In addition, clinical trials are also underway to use cord blood for the treatment of autism, cerebral palsy, Type 1 Diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, spinal cord injury and many more4. In Singapore, KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH) is currently conducting a clinical trial for the treatment of autism using the child’s own cord blood stem cells that are stored with a family cord blood bank. Clinical trials are one of the key driving forces in medical breakthroughs and it represents hope for families with conditions that currently have no known cure. In addition, a person can use his or her own cord blood cells to help reconstitute their bone marrow after chemotherapy treatment5. Choosing to store your baby’s cord blood safeguards your child and your family’s future by giving you access to this life-saving resource should the need ever arise.

Leaning Towards A Family Cord Blood Bank? Here Are 6 Factors Every Parent Should Consider Cord blood banking is a long-term investment for your family’s future and parents should consider the following factors that can help you choose a trusted family cord blood bank.

Cordlife_1_V03.indd 2

Long-Standing Establishment

International Accreditations

As there is only one chance to collect your baby’s cord blood at birth, it’s important to do it with the right partner. Choose a family cord blood bank that has a long-standing establishment as it assures parents that their baby’s precious life-saving stem cells are stored with a trusted and reliable partner who will be with them for the long haul.

Besides choosing an established family cord blood bank, it’s also important that your chosen family cord blood bank has been accredited by international bodies such as American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) or Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT). These accreditations ensure that the family cord blood bank adheres to the highest quality standards when it comes to the handling, processing and storing of your baby’s cord blood through regular and rigorous audits.

A helpful tip will be to go with the largest family cord blood bank in Singapore, as they have over 19 years of experience under their belt. Parent’s Guide to Cord Blood Foundation, an independent resource and non-profit foundation, has also ranked the Top 10 Family Cord Blood Banks worldwide, and a quick search can tell you if any of these are in Singapore.

It also ensures that your child’s cord blood stem cells will remain viable should the need for transplantation ever arise. There are only six family cord blood banks worldwide that are internationally dual certified by both AABB and FACT. Do your research and one of these six would be a family cord blood bank worth considering.

Transplant Track Record

Fully-owned Processing and Storage Facility

An important consideration factor is whether your chosen family cord blood bank has a proven transplant track record. Another tip is to check whether the family cord blood bank has released numerous cord blood units for clinical trials such as the ongoing trial conducted by KKH in Singapore for the treatment of autism. This is an indication that the family cord blood bank is experienced in successfully releasing cord blood stem cells for transplants. It also confirms that the cord blood stem cells stored under their care are in accordance with the highest standards and remains viable for transplantation.

Proper protocols go into ensuring the viability of your child’s cord blood stem cells which is why it’s also important to choose a family cord blood bank that has full ownership over their processing and storage facilities. This means that they maintain direct control over critical services, quality, licencing and accreditations which assures parents of the well-being of their child’s cord blood that are stored under the bank’s care. This also provides the family cord blood bank with immediate access to resources in the event of an emergency.

Additional Service Offerings

Financial Stability

Besides storing cord blood stem cells, check if your chosen family cord blood bank offers additional services as it would give you access to more medical options for your child and family members. One of the family cord blood banks in Singapore is also a patented technology provider in the processing and storage of cord lining cells, which contains 2 types of cells found in the umbilical cord lining – Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) and Cord Lining Epithelial Stem Cells (CLEpSCs). By storing a combination of stem cells, it increases your child and family’s medical options for possible therapeutic and regenerative applications in the future, especially for conditions that currently have no known cure.

As stem cell transplants or therapies may take place now or later in life, choosing a family cord blood bank with a sound, transparent and sustainable financial status is vital as it ensures that the family cord blood bank will be one that you can trust to be with you for the long haul. Public-listed companies offer financial transparency for increased assurance. Some other factors to take note of also include the family cord blood bank’s processing technology, customer service and enrolment process, just to name a few.

When you’re pregnant, your sweet tooth might become a lot bigger than usual, but try not to grab some cake or chocolate to satisfy it! The healthier alternative would be to eat some sweet fruits instead – it’ll appease your sweet cravings while still being nutritious. They’re a great source of folate, a B-vitamin that helps prevent brain and spinal cord defects (aka neural tube defects). They’re most well-known for their richness in vitamin C too – an antioxidant that helps prevent cell damage and helps your body to absorb iron. Firstly, we have the fruit named after a colour – oranges! They’re yummy and juicy, and help you stay hydrated. What’s more, they’re a great source of folate, a B vitamin that helps prevent brain and spinal cord defects (aka neural tube defects). They’re most well-known for their richness in vitamin C too – an antioxidant that helps prevent cell damage and helps your body to absorb iron. The humble apple is high in fibre, and is a good source of vitamin A, C, and potassium. A study found that children of mums who ate apples regularly during pregnancy were less likely to have childhood asthma and allergies.

They’re also high in vitamin A, and vitamin A deficiency at birth is associated with lower levels of immunity and a higher risk of complications such as diarrhoea and respiratory infections. However, it’s rare but it’s possible to get an overdose of vitamin A. Even though mangoes are a great addition to your pregnancy diet, eat them in moderation as they’re also very high in fructose (sugar)!

- Babies don’t usually get enough vitamin K from mums during pregnancy, and without it, they’re at risk of getting a rare disorder called ‘vitamin K deficiency bleeding’ which can cause bleeding into the brain. However, a vitamin K injection is given to baby right after birth, and by the time they’re 6 months old, they’ll have built up their own supply of it.

Ways To Sleep Better During Your Pregnancy Your back is aching and legs are swelling so much, all you want to do is have a good night sleep at the end of a long day at work. So what’s stopping you? Sometimes pregnancy insomnia just gets the better of us and though we want to drift off to snooze-nation, it’s not that easy! Here, we share the sleep secrets for pregnant women. Have a good night, Mummies!

Skip the late-night suppers and snacks We know baby (or you) is hungry, but refrain from having that late-night indulgence 2 hours before bedtime. There’s the likelihood that it

Your body heat increases during pregnancy. You might be feeling hot all the time, and if your room is too stuffy, you might have trouble sleeping. So if possible, turn down the temperature on your air-con if you’re feeling warm.

Can I prepare myself for a drug-free labour? 01 Have a plan, but be flexible! A birth plan is extremely useful, as long as you know that it can’t be set in stone! Having your preferences for labour, birth, and postpartum care be known is important, so do your research and speak to your doctor about it. You should have a opinion about how things will go, but also be aware of the other options available, just in case your preferred plan can’t be achieved.

03 keep fit and active

Stay as fit as possible during your pregnancy by doing squats and light weights consistently – you’ll not only get stronger, you’ll also feel better and more prepared (physically and mentally) to give birth.

05 attend a birth class

If this is your first time giving birth, you should take a class with your partner, as you’ll learn all sorts of things which will help you during birth! The classes will cover topics such as the stages of labour, dilation, thinning of the cervix, various positions for labour, and ways to combat the pain. The whole point of this is to train yourself mentally, to prepare for the birth process – there will be quite a lot of pain and other sensations, so keep practicing those techniques from the birth classes. Giving birth is definitely a mental game.

#3 Can I Prepare Myself For A Drug-Free Labour?.indd 1

02 RESEARCH! There’s a ton of information that you can find out about drug-free births simply by reading books, asking your gynae, and watching YouTube videos. Learn about the different pieces of information which will shape your birth: your OB/midwife’s delivery record, percentage of C-sections, etc; your hospital’s C-section rate and policies for labour and postpartum care; read about the risks associated with induction, the epidural, a water birth, forceps, etc. This is an event that affects both you and baby, so it’s all in your hands to learn as much as you can about it as possible.

04 surround yourself with positive people It may be difficult to keep away the negativity, especially with easy access to forums, groups, and comments online, but do your best to steer clear from them. Don’t let other people bring you down during your pregnancy, and definitely try to pick up a book on childbirth by Ina May Gaskin. Surround yourself with girlfriends who’ve gone through childbirth, speak to your mum about it, and keep reminding yourself that labour is possible and doable without drugs. If you need to talk to negative people who’ll throw doubt on your desire for a drug-free labour, do your best to avoid the topic of giving birth while you’re around them.

Steps To Take When Your Water Bag Breaks During Pregnancy?

The membrane sack is commonly referred to as the water bag. It tends to break once you enter your labor and the fluid flows down your cervix and through your vagina.

When Will Your Water Bag Break During Pregnancy? In all probability, your water bag would not break till you have reached the 37th week of your pregnancy. After that, you run the chances of your amniotic sack breaking, signaling that your child is ready to be born. There are three different stages when your water bag may break:

Many movies have shown pregnant women undergoing water bag breaking in public places with a deluge of fluid gushing out from between their legs. The actual event, however, is usually a little less dramatic!

1. The most natural timing is when your pregnancy term is fully over and you are already in labor. This is referred to as Spontaneous Rupture of Membrane. 2. In many cases, the water bag breaks before the labor starts. This stage is called the Pre-labor Rupture of Membrane. 3.There is also the case where the water bag breaks even before you reach 37 weeks of pregnancy. This is referred to as Preterm Prelabor Rupture of Membrane.

Keeping Track Of Your Water Bag Breaking: Once your water bag has broken, it signals that you are either already in labor or are about to enter into labor. In some cases the labor may not start before 12 to 24 hours. Once your water bag breaks, your child is no longer protected by the amniotic sack. Though your body continues producing the required amount of amniotic fluid till you have delivered your baby, you need to consult your doctor immediately after your water bag breaks. When your water bag breaks, you might feel a popping sensation, along with a slow trickle or a gush of fluid. Every woman experiences differently though. Keep a track of your water bag breaking once it happens, as your doctor would want to hear the symptoms. You need to: 1. Make sure that your water bag has broken and it is amniotic fluid that is leaking. 2. Keep calm and call your doctor to seek advice regarding the water bag break. You should immediately pay a visit to the doctor. 3. Ascertain the color of the discharge. This is very important. 4. Ideally the fluid should be odorless and pale yellow. 5. There may be some amount of blood when the water bag breaks initially. It is normal and you need not worry about it. 6. If the fluid discharged is brownish or greenish in color, it may mean that the baby has had its first bowel movement while in the womb. Seek medical help immediately. 7. Check for signs of fever accompanying your water bag break. Your doctor needs to know these details.

Keeping Track Of Your Water Break: Do not go into a panic mode once your water bag breaks. It is quite a normal thing to happen. However, you do need to be careful about what you do next: 1. Remember that once your water bag breaks, your baby is exposed to the possibility of infections of any kind. 2. Infections from your vagina may travel upwards. Be careful to avoid them at all costs till you deliver your child. 3. Use sanitary napkins to keep your clothes clean. However, it is best to avoid a shower after the water bag breaks. Instead head for the hospital immediately for medical aid.

POSTPARTUM BLEEDING What is it, How long does it last and Tips for you!

After delivery, you will experience bright red bleeding that is very heavy. Any vaginal bleeding can seem to be too much, after not bleeding for 9 months! Bleeding after giving birth can be normal as this is the way that your body gets rid of the womb after you deliver your baby.

WHAT DOES POST- PARTUM BLEEDING LOOK LIKE? The flow of lochia (bleeding after giving birth) will be very heavy and bright red at first. It might have clots in it. The colour of the flow will change gradually to pink, and then to brown. Eventually, the flow will change to yellow-white, much like your period.

HOW LONG DOES THE BLEEDING

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO DURING THIS PERIOD? E N S U R E AB S O L U T E HY GIEN E

You might need to change a pad hourly, or every two hours to start with, then every three or four hours in the coming days or weeks. Ensure that you wash your hands before and after changing your pad. Other than regularly changing your maternity pad, take a shower at least once a day, to ensure that this part is kept clean so as to prevent infections. If you have vaginal stitches, don’t be afraid to clean it. Blood will tend to get trapped around the wound, so be gentle but don’t neglect that area!

LAST? K E E P O F F T HE T AM P O N S F OR AW H ILE

Immediately after you deliver, you will have lochia from your vagina. The discharge will change color to pinkish in a week’s time, and eventually become yellowish or white after about 10 days. You may have lochia lasting for about 2 to 4 weeks, and might come and disappear for like two months. Red lochia will reduce within the first few weeks as the flow gradually becomes less. However, if you try to do a lot of activity too soon, the flow might reappear. A sign that you need to slow down on your level of activity is the appearance of bright red blood.

#5.indd 1

Other than stocking up on maternity pads, you really do not need to do anything out of the ordinary. Two or three packs of maternity pads will do. It is advised that you do not use tampons for the first six or so weeks, as using tampons can introduce a bacteria into your uterus that is still healing, which might cause an infection.

C O N S I DE R DI S P O S AB L E U NDERW EAR

As the flow can be pretty heavy, it is not advisable to wear your favourite underwear to soon. The chances of you staining them will be high. It’s convenient to use disposables and it saves you the trouble of having to wash them! During confinement, anything to save you time and effort is always a great idea.

New Parents Do WRONG With Their Newborn Baby If you’re new to this whole being a mum or dad business and you’re losing your head over a ton of things to think about and figure out, don’t worry, we’ve all been there before! We’ve got to figure out feeding, car seats, sleeping areas, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS, and that’s a big wrecker of nerves), having people visit, and all those are just a few things that concern baby! We haven’t even gotten to mum’s needs yet. Your first week with baby will definitely be tough, but you’re in this together with your spouse and you’ll pull through. Just imagine what they’ll be like when they’re teenagers! Here are 8 things that new parents usually do wrong with baby:

Keeping to a Feeding Schedule It’s only the first week! Don’t come up with a feeding schedule for them yet. Baby’s first job is to eat a lot and grow a lot; although they may lose some weight in their first week due to shedding of ‘water weight’, they’ll quickly pile on the baby fats soon enough!

Trying to Remove the Umbilical Cord’s Stub Okay, no. Just… no. Don’t fiddle with or poke the stub of the umbilical cord because you think that it looks weird on baby. You might cause undue discomfort to baby or, even worse, cause it to get infected! The stub will dry up and fall off on its own, so don’t khe kiang and pull it out!

Following Breastfeeding Positions 100% Mums of newborns follow almost everything to the letter, and breastfeeding is one of them. You don’t need to suffer in an awkward position to breastfeed baby; all that does is make you ache a lot more than you already are aching, and might even cause you stress while you’re feeding.

Having a Whole Lot of Visitors When you’re back from the hospital, your family and friends will definitely want to visit baby and you, but that’s actually not what you should do (at least not for the moment)! Baby’s immune system is still developing, and they’re prone to falling sick because of germs – and the more people that visit you, the more germs they’ll bring with them.

Turning Into a Hermit

This sounds contradictory and at odds with the previous point, but heading out to enjoy a bit of sunshine is great for both baby and mum! If baby still has a bit of jaundice, be extra careful about letting the sun shine on them – their skin will be more sensitive to the effects of sunlight.

Natural R oothe Your Colicky Baby S

Since nobody knows the exact cause of colic, the only remedy is to try and comfort your baby until the colic has passed. The good news is that most babies outgrow colic by the time they are 3 to 4 months old.

WHAT IS COLIC?

CAUSES OF COLIC

During the first few weeks of bringing your baby home, your baby may suddenly burst into a distressing cry that goes on for hours for no apparent reason. Is this excessive crying accompanied by clenched fists and a reddened face? And does it seem impossible to soothe your crying baby? Then you might be dealing with colic.

While it may be distressing to hear your baby cry, colic is very common and affects up to 30% of infants during the first few months of birth. In most cases, colic comes and goes away on its own with no ill effect on your baby.

Colic is a common condition that causes a healthy baby to cry for hours for no apparent reason, even after feeding, changing or soothing. This excessive crying is not an indication of any health issues, and colic is neither harmful nor dangerous to your baby.

Even today, there are no known causes of colic. However, some experts have theorised that colicky behaviour could arise from overstimulation of a baby’s senses, digestion problems or even food allergies. The first step in dealing

with colic is to rule out other possible causes of discomfort. If you notice any of the following symptoms accompanying your baby’s intense crying, call your doctor right away.

Fever Low energy level loose stools blood in stool Throwing up Losing weight not gaining weight For peace of mind, schedule a paediatrician visit for the doctor to determine that you are indeed dealing with colic.

Normal crying vs. colic While crying may indicate many things, this distressing pattern of excessive crying is easily identified by the rule of 3 pattern crying for more than 3 hours a day, at least 3 days a week for more than 3 weeks. It usually occurs at the same time of the day, often in the early evening. Unlike normal crying, colicky babies often appear distressed or in pain, and it is very difficult to soothe them. You may also notice the following signs:

Face may redden Limbs are tightened, arched back, clenched hands High-pitched crying or screaming unable to soothe them

TRY THE ‘COLIC’ CARRY This method may help relieve gas and stomach discomfort for your little ones. Lay your baby face-down with her tummy on your forearm and cradle the head using your hand. Gently rub your baby’s back a few times and the light pressure on the tummy may help relieve uncomfortable gas.

Soothe with Sound and Motion You can soothe a crying baby with rhythmic noises from a white noise machine, as it reminds them of the womb. Babies also tend to be comforted by their mother’s voice, so try repeating words like ‘shh’ or ‘ahh’ to calm your baby. Studies have also shown that swinging or rocking motions are very effective to calm a crying baby and even induce sleep, as it mimics the gentle movements experienced in the womb. Try cradling your baby in your arms and walking around, or you can even use a rocking chair. It helps to swaddle your baby so that they feel an additional sense of security and comfort during this stressful period.

Choose a Bottle That Helps Your Baby Swallow Less Air Colicky babies tend to have a lot of gas build-up in their tummy because they swallow too much air from crying. When you are bottle-feeding, switch to a 100% vacuum free bottle for air-free feeding to reduce any excessive air.

Baby Speech Milestones

While this serves as a general guideline for your baby’s speech development, each child is different and picks up at their own pace. So don’t worry too much if your baby isn’t meeting the guideline. Speak to them more to encourage them! During your regular milestone visits, the doctor or nurses will perform the usual developmental checks to see if baby is hitting the requirements. Speech delays occur for many reasons, including hearing loss and developmental disorders. Depending on the circumstances, your doctor might refer your child to specialists if needed. In the meantime, continue talking to her about what you’re doing and where you’re going. Sing songs and read together. Teach her how to imitate actions such as clapping, listen to nursery songs with actions involved will help a lot too!

Baby Speech Milestones.indd 1

This is the time baby is building social interaction – which is the foundation of language development. By the end of 3 months, baby might: • • • •

Make ‘cooing’ sounds Remain quiet or smile when you speak to her Respond to sounds and noises around her Eye gaze will follow a moving object

Baby will show an increase in babbling, she will start making some vowel sounds. By the end of 6 months, baby might: • • Make gurgling sounds when playing or when left alone • Babble and make a variety of sounds • Move her eyes in the direction of sounds • Be aware that some toys make sounds when moved • Pay attention to music This is the time when baby will start picking up sounds and words at lightning speed. Baby will respond to different sounds you make and might even start trying to imitate them. That is why it’s important for you to talk to baby as much as possible! By the end of 12 months, baby might: • • • •

Try to imitate sounds, say a few singular words, or shake her head Understand simple instructions like ‘sit’, ‘come here’ or ‘lie down’ Recognise words for common objects like ‘shoe’, ‘book’, ‘dog’ Turn and look in the direction of sound, wave hello and goodbye

Between this period, baby should be able to respond to her own name and understand simple requests like ‘can you throw this away?’ or ‘can you put this on the table?’. By the end of 18 months, baby might: • • •

Recognise familiar people and objects Follow simple directions accompanied by gestures Say as many as 8 – 10 single words

Once baby hits 18 months, you will notice an explosion of her vocab. She should be saying about 50 words by the time she is 2 years old. During this period, she will start putting two words together and try to form sentences. You can help her along by being descriptive. Instead of saying ‘where’s the ball?’ ask ‘where’s the big yellow ball?’ By the end of 24 months, baby might: • • •

Use simple phrases like ‘where is mummy?’, ‘more rice’ Follow simple commands and understand simple questions Speak at least 50 words

g n i e d F e e t l t Bo Basics : Do's & Don’ts There may not be a perfect way to bottle-feed your baby, but there are certain know-hows you should know of, to make feeding a more comfortable and pleasant experience for both you and your baby. Here’s the bottle-feeding do’s and don’s to look out for:

Don’ts Don’ts Tilt the bottle too high The bottle should always be at an angle parallel to the floor when you feed. Never tilt it too high, and baby should be propped up into a sitting position, or at a 45-degree angle. Avoid feeding your baby when she is lying down, especially if she’s a newborn, to reduce colic and prevent choking

Force to finish Feed in smaller portions and follow your baby’s lead on when she wants to stop. Don’t force the teat back into her mouth after her showing signs of rejection. If baby is being fussy, it usually means that she’s trying to tell you something – Either she’s full, need to burp, or the flow is uncomfortable. In such instances, try taking a break and continue to feed 15 minutes later, or feed more frequently but in smaller portions instead.

Force the teat into baby’s mouth Instead, encourage her to open her mouth by gently stroking her lips with the teat. It will eventually become intuitive for them to open their mouth as you put the teat near them, as they get older.

Swaddling baby while feeding

Do’s Do’s

Use a slow-flow teat Always use a teat that is age-appropriate for your baby. If you notice that your baby is being fussy when you feed, it might be due to an uncomfortable flow due to an inappropriate teat used. It takes some time to figure out what works the best for you baby, since they have their personal preferences just like us adults too!

Bond with baby Feeding is a perfect time for you to bond and connect with your baby. Look at her, smile and communicate with her, even if she may not exactly understand you now – she eventually will! This also allows you to keep an eye on your baby while she drinks. Never leave her unsupervised with a bottle, especially a newborn!

Mix it up Alternate sides when you feed your baby to mimic breastfeeding. Avoid feeding baby when she’s facing away from you. Take the break in between alternating to help her burp, before continuing to feed again.

Apply pressure to chin Applying gentle pressure under baby’s chin will encourage her to be fed more comfortably. Pressure from the teat on the roof of her mouth will help to trigger her sucking reflex to continue drinking from the bottle.

Avoid swaddling baby while you feed, so you can check for signs of stress when her hands are free. Not swaddling your baby when you feed can encourage her to participate and engage in the process too, whereas swaddling might make it too comfortable for the baby, causing her to fall asleep in the midst of feeding.

TIPS & TRICKS NEW MOMS NEED TO KNOW Going home with a new baby is exciting, but it can be scary, too. Newborns have many needs, like frequent feedings and diaper changes. Babies can have health issues that are different from older children and adults, like diaper rash and cradle cap. Your baby will go through many changes during the first year of life. Check out the toolbox of tips to help care for your baby.

T ips 1 Do the elbow-to-the-knee move to eliminate gas. My babies had serious cases of gas. Drops weren’t cutting it. New bottles weren’t either. What did help was a neat body move that expelled the gas immediately. Lie your baby down on his back. Then, move his right arm and left leg towards each other as if the right elbow and left knee were going to touch. Do the same with the opposite elbow and knee. Alternate a few times until your baby stops farting.

T ips 2 Keep newborns awake no longer than an hour and a half.

Newborns sleep a lot. They may not sleep in long stretches, but over the course of the day, newborns will be mostly sleeping. Or, more importantly, newborn babies can’t stay awake for long periods of time. An hour and a half max.

T ips 3 Track your baby’s feeding and diapers.

You’ll want to track how often your baby feeds and at what time. If he’s breastfed, track how many minutes he nurses and on which breast. If he’s bottle-fed, track how many ounces he drinks. Besides feeding, track your baby’s diapers, noting whether they peed or pooped. You’ll also want to record what poop your baby had, such as color, texture, and how often they peed or pooped. I know, not exactly enticing, but necessary.

T ips 4 Follow the eat/awake/sleep routine.

Do your nurse or feed your baby to sleep? Nursing to sleep wasn’t the way to go. The newborn stage is challenging enough as it is. Feed your baby (eat) when she wakes up (awake) so she’ll have energy for her awake time. She won’t rely on milk to fall asleep. And she’ll have something to transition from sleep to awake. After your baby has been awake for an hour and a half, then you put her sleep drowsy but awake (sleep). She can explore different ways to put herself to sleep, such as sucking on her thumb or rolling her head side to side. And once she’s asleep, you can tend to yourself (you) and repeat the cycle.

Baby Tips And Tricks.indd 2

Baby Care

T ips 5 Find alternative ways to hold your baby. Your baby’s preferred position? The snuggling is good, but not sustainable. After all, you need your arms for other things, and it’s not always safe to fall asleep with the baby in your arms. A swing A baby carrier or wrap Pushing your baby in a stroller An infant cushion Try different ways to put your baby to sleep or to hold your baby using any of these methods. The more options you have, the less likely you have to convince your baby to sleep away from your arms.

T ips 6 Swaddle your baby to sleep. Everything should be comfortable and tight. You want to mimic the snugness of being in your womb. The moro reflexes typical of the newborn stage also cause her to flail her arms. This wakes her up, either because of the motion or she hit herself on the face.

T ips 7 Use white noise so your baby doesn’t startle. Your baby listened to the white noise of your womb. To go from that to a pitch-quiet room is a big change. Help your baby sleep longer with a white noise machine or a fan. There should be enough sound to keep her from jumping at the slightest sound.

T ips 8

T ips 10

Hang darkening curtains.

Newborn Baby Massage

Your baby has no sense of day or night when she was in the womb. Out in the real world, she’ll need help adjusting to the hours. Help her get into a routine by hanging darkening curtains, especially at night. Her body will adjust and she’ll know that nights and dark mean long stretches of sleep.

A bath may not be the most relaxing activity you can do with your baby, but baby massage is a VERY relaxing activity! Baby massage has been shown to help babies (and parents!) relax, and to promote better sleep.

T ips 9

The newborn stage is tough enough as it is. You’re not getting any sleep. Forget about hobbies or leisure time. And your baby takes up nearly all the hours of the day.

Breastfeeding Breastfeeding is a great way to feed your baby, but many new moms find that breastfeeding is tougher than they’d anticipated. But you really can breastfeed your baby AND work towards better, longer sleep!

With these newborn tips, you’ll have an easier time caring for your baby. You’ll know the best way to relieve your baby of gas and how to help her sleep longer. And you can finally enjoy the newborn months a little bit more.

Baby Development: Reading To Baby The Complexities of Reading These days, parents are faced with an overwhelming choice for their babies or children, with a gamut of reading materials readily available: from flip books and board books, to word-picture flashcards, read-along DVDs, digital e-books and more. Before getting started however, parents should be clear about what their main objective is when it comes to reading aloud to their child – especially when their child has yet to reach his first year. The decision about when to start is a highly personal one with different motivations, similar to an expectant mother who regularly places headphones with piped-in Mozart over her swollen belly, either hoping to soothe her unborn child, or perhaps nurture in her baby a future love for classical music! Whatever their objectives, parents must understand that all the hothousing in the world will be of limited use if the child ends up simply memorising and parroting words without associating them with any meanings or sounds. Literacy is after all a complex skill, and besides identifying the words on the page, “real” reading requires comprehension and communication abilities too. According to a study by New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, babies “do not have the internal capabilities to learn how to read.” This was after a seven-month period during which researchers monitored over 100 babies, aged between 9-18 months, who had “used” various educational and reading products. Their learning progress was then compared with babies from a control group that had no such exposure. Apparently, there was no difference, leading the researchers to conclude that the result was not because of problems with any of the reading materials, but stemmed from “the issue of [the babies’] development” – in other words, they were simply much too young.

Intangible Rewards So does this mean that parents reading to their young infants should bin all their books and wait until their baby is older? Absolutely not! There are so many other benefits to be gleaned from reading to your baby, even if he still ends up unable to read Chicken Little back to you after what seems to be the 1,001th narration! In fact, what will prove more meaningful to young babies during reading sessions is soaking up the familiar sounds of their parents’ voices, which gives them a sense of safety, security and reassurance. Paediatricians and early childhood educators all agree that reading is the perfect bonding activity to nurture close parent-child relationships, which is just as important for your baby’s cognitive, language and social-emotional development. How’s that for immediate gratification? The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children should be read to even before they attend preschool. Be it baby, toddler, or pre-schooler, any child who is read to during these early years will tend to have better language skills, enhanced literacy and a keener interest in books by the time they actually start school. With that in mind, it seems to make better sense for parents to expose their baby to reading sooner rather than later. “The more children interact with reading material, the more active and confident readers they become,” says Dr. Carolyn Jaynes, literacy learning designer at LeapFrog, a developer of technology-based educational products. “Read with your child at an early age, and build fun daily routines that incorporate reading.”

What’s Next? Initially, not everyone will feel natural when reading aloud to children this young, especially infants. Some parents may even find the idea quite unusual, since they assume the baby isn’t fully comprehending the story being read to them. Even if your baby’s attention appears to wander from the book, keep at it instead of calling it a day! Don’t be disheartened. Prepare to be flexible and focus instead on spending quality time to bond with baby over this activity until it becomes a beloved habit, which it likely will gradually become, over time (refer to #1). Once your baby has a few books they grow fond of, leave them in accessible places for them to find, like at the bottom of a bookshelf or a basket. Some babies will eventually seek out their favourite books as a means of independently entertaining themselves. They will flip the pages, “read” to themselves, even try to imitate the sounds you make. Other babies will grow to enjoy the activity so much that they might try to get you to read to them more often – possibly even outside the scheduled time! As parents cultivate their child’s appreciation for reading, they will also notice the manifestation of early pre-reading skills. These include orientating the book the right way, turning the pages in sequence, associating the pictures with the action, and learning that the words which are being read to them tell a story – collectively, these skills are all essential for early readers. Remember: Read often, make reading fun, help your child interact with the reading material, and involve your child actively in the story throughout. Before you know it, they’ll be making reading choices of their own as they grow older. Encourage them to have a wide repertoire of reading topics, and regularly recite to them these words of wisdom from Dr. Seuss: “The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go!”

Belly to Baby The first missed period or positive pregnancy test, the first twinges of anticipation – these moments are landmarks on a life-changing road. The journey from pregnancy to motherhood brings excitement and wonder, and sometimes anxiety too. What are some of the skincare needs that you and your newborn may experience? Read on to find out!

1ST & 2ND TRIMESTER

It is recommended to start using products that will provide long-lasting hydration and reinforce skin elasticity from the onset of pregnancy. This helps ease dry or itchy skin, and limits the appearance of stretch marks. Choose products that are clinically proven to be safe for use from the first trimester. Choose a texture that you will enjoy applying daily. Creams➀ tend to be lighter and get absorbed more quickly while oils➁ may take longer to absorb, making this ideal for a massage routine especially at night.

3RD TRIMESTER

In the event you experience stretch marks, do not despair! Continue to use the stretch marks products diligently, and consider adding on the use of the Stretch Marks Serum➂. It’s a concentrated formula that improves the reduction of stretch marks, reinforces elasticity and softens the skin.

A PASSION FOR NATURE

Familiar with Maracuja? No? What about passion fruit? This responsibly sourced ingredient boosts the skin’s suppleness and elasticity to tackle stretch marks at every stage. It is combined with Avocado Peptides or Oil in all Mustela stretch marks products, helping to restore the weakened skin’s hydrolipidic layer.

COMMON SKIN ISSUES

Babies are prone to common skin issues such as milk rash, heat rash, insect bites and even minor grazes. Keep a recovery cream that helps relieve redness and itchiness while repairing the skin handy.

1. BATHE

Choose a tear-free, soap-free and gentle bath product for your baby. • 2 out of 3 babies are affected by cradle cap. • Use a dedicated shampoo➄ from the onset of birth to prevent or wash away cradle cap flakes. For more serious cradle cap cases, use our Cradle Cap Cream➅.

2. HYDRATE

Moisturizing daily provides an immediate, long-lasting hydrating effect by strengthening the skin barrier and leaves the skin feeling silky, supple and softer➆➇.

➅ BABY IS OUT...

A key product in your breastfeeding journey is our vegan Nursing Comfort Balm➃, certified organic with 100% ingredients of natural origin. It’s specially formulated to protect sensitive nipples, soothe and promote skin repair, allowing you to breastfeed with complete serenity & comfort. Planning for your baby’s skincare essentials is easy! We’ve broken down a newborn’s daily routine into 3 steps that you’ll master in no time:

Our research has shown that a baby’s skin contains a precious wealth of original cells at birth. These cells last a lifetime, but are extremely vulnerable. Hence, we have chosen to include Avocado Perseose®, our patented natural active ingredient in all our Bebe products to hydrate and preserve these cells.

3. PROTECT

Diaper rash is common in babies. Protect the diaper area with a generous layer of diaper rash cream➈ with every change of diaper.
