Aside from the country’s economy, one thing that is noticeably screwed up lately is the weather. Spring didn’t seem to know when to set in. The trees in L.A. have just shed off their leaves (some even remained green throughout the winter), and now they have to fast-forward their regrowth and blossom for mankind’s satisfaction. Now if only we could say that about the financial state of the U.S., where we can all just wake up from this state of helplessness and party like it was 2007 (or whenever the words, “Madoff” and “foreclosures” weren’t so eminent). In the meantime, while we so patiently wait for the burgeoning of new employment and hope, we made sure to feature news and personalities that may help you pass the time, and give you fresh and exciting ideas for your valued purchases. Speaking of second winds, our inimitable cover model, Kimora Lee Simmons, looks like she is on one. With her happy and quiet marriage to actor Djimon Hounsou (who visited our shoot and rode out in a traffic-stopping Bentley), and a new baby in tow, the mogul seems unstoppable. But while the couple is reportedly having fun practicing on adding to their tight-knit family, Kimora is on a high, still as the head of Baby Phat, and with the new season of her reality TV show. Much has been said about the towering beauty, mostly about her diva persona, but I was witness to how charismatic Kimora can be (after you get over your shell shock, of course), that it makes you wish you could be BFF’s—or have her remember your name at least. If now is the time to be reminded of the American Dream, then she should be our poster girl: from a multirace family in a predominantly ‘white’ part of the U.S., she grew 5’10” tall at a very young age, which landed her a dream modeling gig (more on that in our cover story). Kimora later on marries one of hip-hop’s masters, bears
two lovely daughters, gets divorced with said husband, then later finds and marries her soulmate, and now has a healthy, beautiful son with him. It is rare to see her let her hair down and just have a candid, easygoing time with the kids in front of the camera, so I sincerely hope you enjoy our feature. I don’t really recall seeing her making silly faces in a photo shoot before this. Shirly Brener is gifted with a chameleon-like ability to blend into any film role. You’ll be surprised to learn about her screen credits, and how she is becoming a force to reckon with in Hollywood—both as an actress and producer. What I am most proud to note though is her closeness with her daughter, Mila. You will rarely spot one without the other, which is very encouraging for many career women, especially those in the entertainment industry. Meeno Peluce’s name may be familiar, also if you’ve been reading BC for some time. We are ecstatic this time to show off another facet to the artist, and are honored to be part of the career of one of the most creative photographers of our time. His eye is impeccable, and the way he speaks about his family through his visuals is more than words can say. I am excited to move forward to a blessed and inspired 2010 with you all. See you at the playgrounds.

a recipe for one of the more popular bar cookie desserts, made with a cookie crust and zesty topping. INGREDIENTS: 1 cup flour 3/4 cup sugar 1/4 cup powdered sugar 2-3 tablespoons lemon juice 1/2 cup butter 2 tablespoons flour 2 eggs 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1. Stir together 1 cup flour and 1/4 cup powdered sugar 2. Cut in butter until mixture clings together 3. Pat into ungreased square baking pan 4. Bake at 350 degrees F for 10-12 minutes 5. Combine remaining ingredients and spread on top of baked crust 6. Bake at 350 degrees F for 25-30 minutes 7. Sprinkle with powdered sugar *Makes about 8 servings **Suggestion: Best if paired with mint tea

How old were you when the fashion bug bit?
Actually, I know I was born—yes born—with the fashion bug. So I guess that makes me a minute old!
If you were to choose between designing couture with a limited audience, or designing RTW for a mass audience, what would you prefer?
Couture or mass, I want everyone happy and wearing my designs! Whose career success do you emulate?
I am like Coco Chanel. I am following my dreams, I even have the same initials as her—CC. Any relation to the designer, Oleg Cassini?
What, and who, inspires you?
Everything around me! Of course, fashion magazines and shows. Designers like Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Jacobs, Dianne Von Furstenburg, and brands like Louis Vuitton and Forever XXI.
Not that my parents know of. What role did your parents play in pursuing your dreams?
Well, my parents let me! They let me cut dresses, they always encouraged my love for fashion, gave me art and sewing lessons at the beginning. They let me be creative and try new things, and they respect my ideas and opinions, even though I am just 10. Apart from becoming a fashion designer, is there anything else you’d like to be?
I only want to be a fashion designer—of course, I will be a mom, too. And I want to be happy.

We read that you were, “…moved by the story of a young woman who received a full scholarship to the FIDM in Los Angeles, but was homeless and did not have a sewing machine to practice on,” and you gave her your own machine. What prompted this generosity?
I was at this charity event for Hollywood arts and this girl, Marie, told her story. As I stood there with my mom, I felt sad for her. I wanted to help her. I couldn’t believe how lucky I was to already have my own sewing machine even though I was so young. I told my mom that I wanted to give her my machine and she said “OK,” and that was it. I wanted to be nice and help her.

My friends don’t really ask me because I think they are shy to, but whenever a friend says they like something, I am happy to give it to them. What do you think when people say that you are a “fashion prodigy?”
I don’t really know what to think. I know it is something good but I don’t really understand it. It sounds good. If you could raid someone’s closet, whose would it be?

meeno peluce Fresh eggs, everyday. We have Araucanas that lay blue eggs, and a tiny, broody Silky who sits on all of them. Skyfarm, resurrected from a condemned shell of a Grande Dame of an old house. Off to Cuba! Cutting millet for the cockatiels. And the fabulous abstract painting is an original 1960’s Robert Peluce, Meeno’s uncle who had a retrospective at the Hammer last February.
I
t would be simple to describe this artist as an ace lensman, because one look at his portfolio would tell you that he most categorically is. Meeno Peluce has immortalized more notable celebrities (including Demi Moore, Jack Black, Jeremy Piven, Gary Oldman, Jason Lee), musicians (Rihanna, Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga, Diddy, Chris Cornell, etc.), and even politicians (his town’s Mayor Villaraigosa), than a grouping of photographers. With a quick online search you’ll find out that he was also a child star with impressive screen credits that list Starsky and Hutch, Diff’rent Strokes, The Incredible Hulk, Happy Days, The A-Team, and Punky Brewster (which coincidentally starred younger sister, Soleil Moon Frye).
Mom’s always ready to sew a costume. A ‘Golden Drop of Sun’ for the “Sound of Music” Sing-A-Long. We sacrificed the lawn. We brought the girls to Morocco. Bindi was 5 1/2, and Mette was 1 1/2. Maison Chameaux is an eco-boutique hotel situated in a small Bedouian village above Essouaria. They designed special saddles that allow small children to ride the Sudanese racing camels. A Dutch door lets the garden in but keeps our three dogs out. Wee Mette, when told about Sarah Palin, immediately came up with a bright idea—Halloween costume! Breastfeeding on the go! The bed is constructed of wood salvaged from an Indonesian temple. The blanket was bought on a family trip to Morocco. It’s a Bedouin wedding shawl. The pig is by Barbara Sansoni, made entirely of eco-materials and dye in Sri-Lanka.

These come from a series of projects that Ilse and I have done with our Chicks. Ilse does the styling and art direction, I do the witnessing and the Chicks are more than happy to play dress up.

The Boston Terrier, Jack, has had $10,000 worth of training, all of which has been undone on the farm. The egg in our garden. If you can find the guy who has the key to this abandoned casbah, you have it all to yourself. Watercolors and cocktails. Ilse, working her bees Bindi provides more color to Cuban streets Mette in the living room (a Chicks’ doll paradise) The garden’s bounty. Our three veggie gardens produce almost year round. The sleeping porch, our bedroom nine months out of the year. It’s like sleeping in a treehouse. Papa at work. Daddy built his Chicks a bookcase and closet. Homemade gingerbread house for Christmas morning. Antique carnival toys in our favorite town, Remedios, hotwired right into the streetlights.

fter watching a heartbreaking segment on CNN with Soledad O’Brien filming from a local orphanage in Haiti, which she described as a scene so tragic that young babies are dying from dehydration because they have no baby formula, clean water, nor diapers—designer Jayneoni Moore immediately called on her friends and family to be part of an emergency diaper and formula drive which she themed, “Playdate for Haiti” held at The Playroom in Sherman Oaks, CA. Her plea was heeded without hesitation, and it was uplifting to witness moms and children donate an afternoon to diligently buy, deliver, pack, and sort thousands of dollars worth of milk, nappies, clothing, blankets, shoes, and toys for the children in dire need. It is a comforting thought that even if people are busy with their own lives and families, there are still those who are willing to lend their hands and hearts for a cause.
