THE FOOTBALL SEASON CONCLUDES THIS MAY
As the 2024/25 English football season reaches its final week, the battle for promotion, relegation, and European qualification intensifies across the leagues. With Liverpool securing the Premier League title in emphatic fashion, Southampton and Leicester City have suffered the heartbreak of relegation. Meanwhile, the race to avoid the final drop spot and the fight for Champions League
places remain fiercely contested. The EFL season is also reaching its climax, with teams battling for promotion and survival. And, of course, the FA Cup final looms, promising another thrilling showdown at Wembley.
Premier League: Liverpool’s Triumph and the Relegation Battle
Liverpool have been crowned Premier League champions, equalling Manchester United’s record of 20 top-flight titles. The Reds sealed their triumph with a dominant 5-1 victory over Tottenham, marking a remarkable season under new manager Arne Slot.
At the bottom of the table, Southampton suffered the earliest relegation in Premier League history, enduring a dismal campaign that saw them part ways with manager Ivan Juric. Leicester City soon followed, their fate sealed after a 1-0 defeat to Liverpool, making them the first team in top-flight history to go nine consecutive home league games without scoring.
Ipswich Town confirmed all three newcomers to the Premier League this season will return back to the Championship after a 3-0 loss to Newcastle put an
end to their time in the Premier League.
Champions League
Race: Who Will Secure a
Spot?
With the Premier League securing an extra Champions League place due to England’s UEFA coefficient boost, the top five teams will qualify for the 2025/26 league phase. Arsenal’s impressive quarter-final win over Real Madrid played a key role in securing this additional spot.
Currently, Chelsea sit six points clear of Arsenal in second, while Newcastle, boosted by their Carabao Cup win, have already secured a Conference League spot but could still push for a Champions League or Europa League place.
EFL Championship: Promotion and Relegation Battles
The Championship promotion race has been thrilling, with Leeds United and Burnley
securing automatic promotion to the Premier League. Sheffield United and Sunderland are guaranteed play-off spots, while Bristol City, Coventry, Millwall, Blackburn Rovers and Middlesbrough are all set to battle it out for the two remaining places on the last day of the Championship season.
At the bottom, Cardiff City have been relegated, while Plymouth are all but down. Hull, Derby, Preston, and Luton are all fighting to avoid the drop heading into the final day.
FA Cup Final: Wembley Awaits
The FA Cup final is set to be another blockbuster event at Wembley, with Manchester City and Crystal Palace set to meet in the showpiece event.
As the season draws to a close, the drama continues to unfold across England’s football leagues. Liverpool’s title win, the relegation battles, the race for Champions League spots, and the upcoming FA Cup final ensure that fans will be on the edge of their seats until the very last whistle.
Who will secure their place in Europe? Who will suffer the heartbreak of relegation? And who will lift the FA Cup at Wembley? The answers will soon be revealed.
