Being able to manage and build relationships is something I learned at Babson.

Sydney Logan ’21, a former resident assistant and student photographer, is the founder of the Johnson House at Babson, special-interest housing for members of the Black Student Union (BSU). Now, after interning at Abbott and Staples alongside her leadership positions on campus, she works in digital customer growth at American Express.

When I think about my career, I think about two courses: Foundations of Management & Entrepreneurship (FME) and Organizational Behavior. I’ve realized that while the work I do is important, so is how you work with people. That coursework helped me navigate my career and role at American Express. I must translate business needs across teams.

ABuiltCurriculum to Last

Beginning in your first semester, you will take classes and work on projects that set you up to make real impact for organizations, the environment, and your community. Your hands-on experiences in the field along with your foundations in business and the liberal arts and sciences provide a wellrounded portfolio when you graduate.

Hands-On Learning at Your Hands: Foundations of Management and Entrepreneurship (FME)

Work with your peers and two faculty members to identify, create, and launch a real business throughout your first year. FME is the premier Babson course for a reason. You not only develop the business fundamentals and the essential skills, such as teamwork and problem solving, employers are demanding, but it’s an experience you build on and can draw from during interviews and internships.

FME is all about teamwork.

The group behind Oh Dam!, a Babson-themed, student-created card game, designed their product to bring together the Babson community. This team of first-year students developed, launched, and managed this venture throughout the two-semester course, doing everything from designing the packaging to ordering inventory to running the brand TikTok account.

Watch a video following the group as they prepare for the FME Expo.

It’s about teaching the ways we can try to make changes and to foster more sustainable systems. These are tools that apply to whatever students want to do.

Rethink Your Thinking: Socio-Ecological Systems

We build tomorrow today. Socio-Ecological Systems is a course analyzing the sustainability challenges facing our future. Immerse yourself in the intersections among social, ecological, and economic systems while learning from two faculty members: one professor of natural sciences and one professor of the humanities or social sciences.

The Real World Before the Real World: Advanced Experiential

Engage in consulting projects with companies such as Puma or the Boston Red Sox and address real business challenges for them as part of Management Consulting Field Experience (MCFE). Or apply your financial modeling skills by managing a portion of the Babson College endowment in the Babson College Fund class. Or learn and evaluate federal monetary policy, then present monetary policy recommendations to economists at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston in the College Fed Challenge.

What you do is up to you. This requirement allows you to select a course in the discipline of your choice and collaborate with an external organization to identify, analyze, and develop real ideas for growth.

The Babson student consultants shared terrific insights into the Dunkin’ Brands Gen Z consumer segment. I was very impressed with their detailed research, presentation skills, and depth of knowledge exhibited throughout the 12-week project.

Babson shaped my professional interest in brand building. My education gave me a full understanding of how a business works.

Cole Spencer ’21 spent his childhood eavesdropping on his dad’s work calls. His dad worked for a shoe company, and ever since, Spencer has been fascinated with brand building. Fast forward to Babson, and Spencer used career center resources to snag an internship at New England institution L.L. Bean. Now, as an E-Commerce Content Planner at L.L. Bean, he’s helping this beloved brand tell its story (and sell some shoes of its own).

In my marketing and social media marketing classes, we did simulations. We actively tried to sell products and build a reputation. I can directly translate the work I’m doing in my classes to the work I’m doing now. This felt very unique to Babson.

I leveraged industry-specific networking events. It taught me how to talk to people across industries and seniorities. I am now calling IT managers and CIOs. Those events helped me get over that fear and grow my confidence.

The greatest class I took was Sports Application of Mathematics with Professor Richard Cleary. We spoke to so many people in the sports industry. Having coursework that was specific to my interest of business analytics was really helpful.

AmplifyExperience Your Internship

Career Exploration Lab & Internship Experience Lab

Designed to complement students’ professional learning during an internship, students can earn course credit while receiving guidance and mentorship to succeed and develop their professional growth.

Intern Sponsorship Award

Some industries, such as nonprofit, advertising, entertainment, and startups, are not able to offer compensation at a level that makes it accessible to all prospective interns. Other opportunities may take you far across the globe, yielding travel and boarding costs. We aim to make it possible for students to engage in internships, whether paid or unpaid, to explore their skills on the job. Each spring, through an application process, the Career Advising pillar of CCD proudly offers awards for students who accept global and domestic summer internships that may otherwise cause financial hardship.

Professional Attire Fund

Babson’s Professional Attire Fund is for any student who has a big presentation or interview coming up and can’t afford polished business clothing. The fund is available through the CCD’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA) program.

Job Shadows

For job shadows, which are designed for students in the exploration phase of their career development, CCD connects students with a vast network of Babson alumni and organizations to investigate various careers, industries, organizations, or functions.

When crafting examples to share in interviews, I took from my FME experiences. Having that background made me a better candidate. It’s key to gaining the soft skills that companies and roles demand.

While at an event in high school, first-generation student Gina Huang ’22 met a Babson alum who happened to be a VP at Goldman Sachs. From that conversation, Huang, who was deciding between a few schools, decided it was Babson green for her. She would only continue to see the power of the Babson alumni network. While at Babson, she interned at Target (where she met more former Babson Beavers eager to speak to her) and participated in a retail undergraduate program for Amazon, where she now works for their Amazon Fresh division.

I also drew on case studies [in interviews]. In Strategic Marketing, we acted as marketing consultants for a Babson alum’s company. I specifically talked about that experience in my interviews. My Babson education helped me craft a career and the stories I needed to tell for it.

– GINA HUANG ’22 Marketing Manager, Amazon Fresh

Coming to Babson, I thought I would go the corporate route.

After he graduated, Sienzhi Kouemo ’20 wanted to pursue his MBA. To do so, he needed some real work experience. Enter Babson alum Kevin Bryant ’82, CEO and co-founder of social media company Educated Change, who helped him land a job at his company. “It started with a LinkedIn connection, and it led me to a whole new level that I could never have imagined,” he says. Kouemo graduated with his MBA in 2023 and now has his own consulting firm.

Read more about the alumni connection that helped Kouemo navigate his career.

Babson taught me to understand Entrepreneurial Thought & Action® (ET&A™) and leverage the people and network to create systems of change. I work with nonprofits right now, building my own consulting firm. I started my own podcast. It only amplifies those networks.
