1. On Your Mark... Get Set... Grow Starting a career with the desire to make the world a better place is an ambitious goal - even more so when it means working for a presidential administration. Through the twists and turns of a career spanning the public and private sectors, the most important aspects of being a professional stemmed from this idea.

2. Breaking New Ground “Coming out” can be daunting for those who identify as part of the LGBTQ community. There are more opportunities that exist now for individuals who have these sexual preferences. But, as it was until recently, between parental expectations and the unrecognized commitment of same-sex couples for a work visa, living as an open person laid the foundation for a career that can be equally as free.

3. Working For a Perfect Fit

“Emphasis can be placed on a personal brand. Embracing authenticity will never lead towards a place of uncomfortability.” - Sally Susman

The unique position of serving on any board can only be done well if there is meaning in what is set to be achieved from a foundational principle for any person. The cause of including women in similar advisory roles resonates with many people - men and women, alike. Without men included on the journey of equality, women cannot expect change. Diversity transcends race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or wealth, but rather a difference in thought and one’s personal brand is key; the strongest competitive advantage an individual can have is his/her authenticity. Whether as a candidate or an established professional, being oneself is the factor that distinguishes one person from another.

4. Manufacturing a Plan Two important tenets of working towards any goal: 1) Take Risks - it is a shame that individuals wait until there is satisfaction to execute their plans of action. 2) Establish a true network - people are a valuable resource for a company just as they are for other people. Lean on friends, colleagues and acquaintances and offer a helping hand when you can.
