In the picture above Year 6 pupils are dressed in 1940s outfits as part of their World War 2 day, a poignant reminder of how important it is for us to consider our past.
We learn from the experiences of others and we can develop an understanding of what drives people and events.The ability to engage more effectively with the past is enhanced by more vivid experiences and this reinforcement helps our understanding grow.
There is much evidence of ‘Hands on History’ in this copy of Simba. Of course we cannot actually relive the past, but at school and through visits we aim to enhance the children’s understanding and empathy. We hope that this helps their people skills; developing compassion, self-control and our ability to ‘get on’. Coventry’s spirit of ‘Peace and Reconciliation’, consequential to World War 2, enriches our city, our community, our past and our future. I am sure it can enrich our Christmas.

Healthy Eating in Kindergarten
Kindergarten pupils have been learning about healthy eating this term.
After preparing lots of healthy fruit in class, they set up a stall on the playground and gave out tasting pots of fruit to other Pre Prep children as a healthy snack.
Kindergarten Celebrates Diwali
Kindergarten celebrated Diwali this term by making cards and Diwali ‘sparklers’ with bread sticks and chocolate.
A Busy Term in Reception!
Children in Reception have been thoroughly enjoying ‘Dough Disco’.
In these days of ‘tap and swipe’ it is important to develop the dexterity and hand-eye co-ordination along with fine and gross motor skills in children. ‘Dough Disco’ combines all of these in a fun way and builds the children’s confidence and self-esteem with a short period of singing, full body movement and hand and finger exercises.
Through these exercises we have already noticed a great improvement with the children’s pencil grip, pencil control and formation of letters and numbers. We would encourage children to use their hands and fingers as much as possible during their play to further develop these skills. Keep squeezing, patting, prodding and rolling!
Alongside ‘Dough Disco’, Reception children have also been learning about dark and light and shadows. The children explored lighting up the dark with glow sticks, torches, brightly coloured pastels on black paper and anything else they could investigate.
We also incorporated our learning into Children in Need Day, with a disco with laser lights, disco lights and lots of dancing in our pyjamas.
It was a very impressive display of practical learning. Our shadow pictures will soon be displayed outside Reception classes.
Year 1 ‘On Track’ with their Maths
Year 1 have been looking at adding and subtracting using number tracks. Some of the children were challenging themselves to add or subtract two digit numbers on the number track.
Year 2 Visit the Midland Air Museum
Year 2 had a very interesting trip to the Midland Air Museum before half term as part of their topic on transport.
They were full of excitement after the trip with Venice commenting, “I want to be an aircraft engineer when I’m older” and with Sufyan exclaiming, “This is the best day ever.”
A Gruffalo Inspired Term for Year 1
Year 1 have had a fabulous time this term exploring descriptive language within reading and their own writing. The children enjoyed studying a much loved book by Julia Donaldson – ‘The Gruffalo’.
The children have been immersed in a variety of writing styles, focusing on their use of adjectives to make their writing more exciting. Lots of fun was had by the children whilst in role as the Mouse from the Gruffalo. They went into ‘Gruffalo Wood’ (aka the playground garden) and used their senses to inspire creative writing.
The children wrote invitations to Mouse from Fox, Owl and Snake, inviting him to a feast. In preparation for the feast, we made special tree shaped jam sandwiches and thoroughly enjoyed eating them!
Basing all of the lessons around The Gruffalo has resulted in fabulous writing by the children and lots of wonderful memories. Roll on the next amazing book.

DT Day
Year 2 enjoyed their DT day this term as they designed and made their own moving vehicle.
A Super Day at the Pre Prep
Year 1 spent the day as their favourite Superhero as part of their topic on Superheroes. During the day they made their own Superhero sticks of invented characters and wrote about their powers. They also tested materials to find out the best one to make a cape. All pupils (and teachers!) had lots of fun being superheroes for the day.

Road Safety Week at the Pre Prep
This term there was a whole week dedicated to road safety at the Pre Prep.
Beep! Beep! Day was scheduled for the middle of the week with all the children (and staff!) coming to school in very bright coloured clothes. During the week Year 1 learnt how to safely cross the road outside the Pre Prep, Year 2 had a DT Day making cars and Kindergarten and Reception put their new road safety knowledge to the test in the playground. Pupils had a great week learning about road safety in lots of different and creative ways.

Welcome to Year 3!
This year we have THREE, rather than two, Year 3 classes with Mr Powell joining us from the Pre Prep to teach the extra class. It has been wonderful to welcome so many new faces into school this term.
Revolting Romans
Year 3 have been learning all about Romans this term. They made some incredible shields and learnt how Romans used their weapons in battle –on the playground rather than on the battlefield!

Fire Brigade visit Year 4
Year 4 had an informative visit from the Fire Brigade this term. The children learnt the importance of testing smoke alarms weekly and about making sure to change their alarm batteries once a year. We’re all also going to close our doors in our house, especially at night!

We are writing to thank you very much for visiting us at school. We had a wonderful time this morning, we learnt how to look after our teeth and most importantly we cleaned them so they were white again!
After not having brushed our teeth this morning, Anya thought that her teeth were REALLY fuzzy and disgusting. Lilly F. agreed that her teeth were furry and weird as well. Sidney knew that the sticky film was called plaque and was caused by families of germs growing and excreting horrible liquids like poo, urine and acid! We ALL couldn’t wait to clean our teeth after discovering this. Bavan learnt that he needed to brush his teeth to stop him from getting holes (cavities) in them. None of us wanted fillings or dentures! Next, we had disclosing liquid put on our tongue and Micah spread it around his mouth. Jahdiel was horrified at her red coloured teeth. Abbyshana learnt that we could use a timer to ensure that we all brushed for two minutes and removed this plaque/colouring. Miss Love really enjoyed the peace and quiet. Leo was very relieved when his teeth turned white again as was everyone in 4L.
Harry remembered to brush the inside, the outside and the tops of ALL of his teeth. Lilly H. was surprised that you should ideally use toothpaste without water, or that you could just use the brush with no toothpaste. India knew that toothpaste contains fluoride which helps keep your teeth and gums healthy. Karam also brushed his gums to keep them healthy and prevent them from bleeding.
Finally, Phoebe wanted to say thank you for all the goodies in the bag. Tonight, Paul is going to ensure everyone in his house brushes for two minutes. Khadijah recalled that the average adult only brushes for 46 seconds. Teyah is going to visit the dentist at least once a year. James remembered that sugary drinks and sweets are probably best after a meal, at most once a day.
Thank you once again for your informative visit. We will ALL definitely be brushing twice a day from now on!

‘Shiver me Timbers!’
Year 4 Pirate Day
Year 4 tell us what they got up to on their pirate day this term…
We discovered that pirates might hide their treasure in an emergency and would draw a map to help them find it again. Most of the time, they liked to spend their LOOT quickly!
We learnt that to use co-ordinates you need to ‘go along the deck, then up the rigging’. We chose landmarks to add to our island maps. Then finally played a game, like battleships, to guess where our partner’s treasure was hidden.
We sang musical shanties and jigs.
We retrieved the treasure from the bottom of the swimming pool.
We acted like pirates in drama, speaking with strong, confident pirate voices. In groups, we formed a crew and tried to persuade our fellow pirates to join us for more bold, fearsome adventures aboard our ship. In pairs, we tried to persuade landlubbers to join us pirates at sea too. Finally, we played a game full of ship’s actions. ‘Hit the Deck’ and ‘Lifeboats’ were our favourite commands.
A Spooky Science Experiment
Earlier this term Junior School pupils were treated to a Halloween inspired science experiment, led by Senior School Science teachers. The rain didn’t dampen spirits as the children enjoyed watching pumpkins being blown up on the school playground.

Year 5 Explore Antarctica
This term Year 5 have been learning about Expeditions, with a focus on Antarctica. It has been an exciting topic full of creative learning and activities. Here are some of the things they have been getting up to…

Year 5 had lots of fun testing blubber gloves to investigate how some animals keep warm in Antarctica and also used Lego to make models of their very own snow shelters.

They also thought about all the things they can do to help reduce global warming, such as walking, cycling and recycling.
An Expedition to Antarctica
Year 5 went on an expedition to Antarctica this term where they became Scientists, explored the wildlife living in Antarctica, tackled a blizzard, tasted adventure food, learnt how to use a compass and even crossed crevasses (in the climbing wall!).

Year 6 World War 2 Topic
World War 2 Day
Throughout the Autumn Term Year 6 have been learning about World War 2.
The children have embraced the unit, learning about all aspects of life during the War through many different areas of the curriculum. As part of their enrichment, on 14th November 2017, 77 years after the Coventry Blitz, the entire cohort took part in a day of World War 2 themed activities.
Staff and pupils came to school clad in 1940s garb, the children as evacuees and the staff dressed in many different 1940s iconic fashions. The morning began with the children gathering in the courtyard to be billeted.
Year 6 then engaged in four different activities: a codebreaking session with Mr Norman, wartime cooking with Mrs Dodd and Ms Shortt, Art with Mrs Jeffcoat and 1940s dance with Mrs Danes. The day ended with a victory party in the hall. Children and staff alike feasted on SPAM sandwiches and jelly before pupils performed the dance they had been learning.
Amazing Anderson Shelter Models
Year 6 pupils were kept busy over half term making these amazing Anderson Shelter models as part of their topic on World War 2.
BJS House Times Table Competition
This term Junior School pupils competed in the first ever House Times Table competition at BJS.
After the whole school took part in the first two rounds six finalists from each house, in each year group, came together for the grand final which was held in the school theatre. The final consisted of a House team in each year completing as many questions as they could in 1minute 30seconds whilst the team captain answered questions from Mr Price in front of

the rest of the school. The audience was impressed by the knowledge and poise the finalists showed whilst answering questions under very intense conditions.
At the end our professional adjudicators, Mrs Jeffcoat, Miss Love and Mr Norman, combined the final round scores with the scores from the previous rounds and announced a joint first place between Nelson and Elliot!

Marvellous Maths Challengers +
A record number of Bablake Junior Pupils won certificates in the national Primary Maths Challenge this year. Sixteen pupils have been put through to the national finals bonus round and gold certificates were awarded to our four highest scorers, placing them amongst the top few hundred young mathematicians in the country. Well done everyone and thanks to Miss Love and Mr Norman for the mathspiration!

Year 3 Trip to Chedworth Villa
On the 19th September, Year 3 went on an exciting trip to Chedworth Roman Villa as part of their Humanities topic on Romans. The children got to take part in lots of activities and were given a grand tour of the ruins. They had the chance to handle authentic Roman artefacts, make Roman medicine bags and dress up as slaves. Shawn, Raahim, Rohan, Sienna and Nosarume were also lucky enough to be given the opportunity to dress up as Roman soldiers!
Year 4 visit Birmingham Botanical Gardens
Year 4 visited Birmingham Botanical Gardens as an introduction to their new topic – The Web of Life.
The topic incorporates rainforest inspired Art, Science (plant adaptations including carnivorous plants) and Humanities. On the trip pupils spent time in the tropical house looking at the plants. Some of the plants were identified as familiar foods, e.g. coffee, ginger and bananas. The children also learnt how some plants adapted so that the water runs down a long tip or through holes in the leaves. The children found epiphytes living in the air and a weeping fig with aerial roots. They also compared other habitats to the rainforest.
The day ended with a rainforest workshop which included handling stick insects, corn snakes and giant snails, they even got to watch a chameleon eat its lunch!
Year 4 visit Holdenby House
Year 4 had a great time at Holdenby House on their Tudor trip. They had a go at Archery, learnt about Tudor houses and medicines and even tried Tudor dancing!
Year 6 visit Coventry Cathedral
Year 5 visit Blists Hill
Year 5 were welcomed to the age of Queen Victoria, as they visited the Blists Hill Victorian Town earlier this term. They spent the day experiencing what life was like when Britain, ‘ruled the world’. They met some (almost) real Victorians in their authentic shops and cottages, brought curious goods from a bygone era and watched tradespeople in action in their atmospheric workshops and factories. They even got to see what it was like in a Victorian classroom as they dressed up as Victorians and attended lessons. Many pupils were relieved to return to BJS, where teachers aren’t quite so strict…
Having the old Cathedral on our doorstep allows us to explore this iconic site and to appreciate its beauty and its message each year. Through our visits pupils get to see the Cathedral through fresh eyes and are provided with a chance to contemplate and reflect upon this powerful monument.
This term our visit focused on the story of the Coventry Blitz. We explored the history of the Cathedral on the night of November 14th 1940, hearing the story from the inside. It is heart wrenching to see the Cathedral’s one and only water source, now a small tap in the corner of the ruins, from where the Provost and his caretaker tried to find enough water to put out the initial fires. After hundreds of incendiary bombs had fallen, their task was in vain. The tarnished sandstone tells of the immense heat that particularly destroyed one side of the old Cathedral with more intensity than the rest. It was a fateful night, brought to life on our visit.
Our children are able to enjoy the wonder of the new Cathedral each year as we celebrate Christmas. This time we enjoyed it in November, at the anniversary of the Blitz, and this allowed the story of Peace and Reconciliation to resonate with even more strength.
Pre Prep Pupil Ella’s Guide Dog Experience
“Today I went to visit the Guide Dog Centre in Leamington. Here they train guide dog puppies and give them new homes. They feed, walk and groom the dogs every day to keep them healthy until they are old enough to have a new owner.
Guide dogs help blind people who cannot see. The dogs help to guide them around to get to different places and keep them safe, as they can’t see hazards such as cars on the road.
I learnt lots of new things during the day about how guide dogs help their owner to do things that people who can see can do without thinking.
Blind people cannot see the green man on a zebra crossing. I found out that under the button is a little black cone that spins around when it is safe to cross the road. Also on the path before a road crossing the pavement has little bumps on it, this is so the guide dogs know there is a road crossing and stop to keep their owner safe.
The Guide Dog’s Association is run by volunteers and costs lots of money, it was good to see how the money raised by Bablake children is spent helping others. I had lots of fun giving the puppies lots of fuss!”
Jeans for Genes Day
At the beginning of term we held a Jeans for Genes day at school and pupils paid £1 to come to school wearing their jeans. The money raised for this special charity will help to deliver inspiring projects and support services for children affected by a genetic disorder in the UK.

We are excited to announce that BJS and BPP raised an amazing £1,147 for BBC Children in Need this year. Thank you to everyone who helped to raise money through selling Pudsey goodies and wearing pyjamas to school.

Year 2 pupils had a fantastic netball lesson this term, led by Senior School Fifth Year netball players. They practised their catching and throwing under the watchful eyes of their new coaches. Thank you to Senior School pupils and teachers for their support during the session – it was a very worthwhile exercise that was enjoyed by everyone.
Games and matches were postponed and cancelled as we experienced some of the coldest days of the year…and lots of snow on our pitches! Wrapped up for Rugby…

I have had a fabulous first term at Bablake and a fantastic introduction to sport here.
The girls have all shown great enthusiasm in lessons and regular commitment to lunchtime and after school clubs, with numbers regularly exceeding 40 participants! They thoroughly deserve all the success they have achieved over the term. Thank you to all staff who have been really supportive and helpful. Finally, I must say a special thank you to all the parents for your support at the matches, whatever the weather!
House Cross Country
BJS House Cross Country races took place on the Friday before half term. During the afternoon every BJS pupil took part in the races and every pupil finished! The children all showed true grit and determination, as well as a lot of talent. In every race there were some lovely examples of Bablake sportsmanship and spirit as pupils encouraged each other to do their best. Netball Report
What a start to the year we have had with three of our teams continuing their unbeaten record from last year. We have had some really tough games with the girls rising to every challenge. The U11A team have had some really close games, losing their first match against Bromsgrove 10-11, and to Solihull 6-8. Despite the disappointing start to the season they have showed tremendous determination and have since gone on to record some fabulous wins, finishing 12-6 against St. Martin’s and 17-5 against Eversfield.
The U11B team have continued their unbeaten record from last year winning 22-7 against Bromsgrove, 9-2 against Solihull and 27-6 against The Croft. They also had success against Bilton Grange’s A team and the U12C team from the Senior School. Well done Girls!
The U10 A and B teams have also maintained their winning streak, with the A team winning 10 out of 10 matches played and the B team winning 5 out of 5 of their matches. The U10A team were also victorious at the prestigious Solihull School Netball tournament, taking home the trophy after winning every match. Our U9 teams have thoroughly enjoyed the experience (and excitement!) of their first ever fixtures this term and are showing great promise for the future.

Both the U11 and U10 teams have made a promising start to the season. The U11A team lost their very first match against Croft but then went on to win their other regular fixtures, beating St. Martin’s 3-2 and Crackley Hall 7-2.
At this year’s IAPS tournament the U11 squad played five matches, with one draw, three close defeats and one fantastic 2-1 win against Stamford. The girls played their hearts out, showing great strength of character, but sadly missed going through to the semi-finals on goal difference.
Their season continued with another excellent performance in the Senior School U12 Tournament where the team played exceptionally well and with a growing confidence as they faced the older U12 teams. They played four matches starting with a 0-2 loss against Bablake U12A team, they then played Kingsley, and as a result of working really hard, won 2-0. Their third match was against Princethorpe (who were unbeaten in the whole tournament) and despite a fantastic effort from all we lost 0-3.
Finally, we drew 0-0 with KHVIII in an incredibly close game that could have gone either way. The girls finished a fabulous third in the tournament showing their great potential – huge congratulations to all involved!
The U11B team lost their first match of the season to The Croft but picked up a win against St. Martins in their second fixture.
The U10A team lost their first match against St. Martins but went on to beat Kingsley and Crackley Hall later in the term, showing excellent determination to succeed. They also experienced their first ever hockey tournament this term, where they drew against Crescent, King Henry VIII and Warwick B and C teams and lost 0-1 against Croft and Warwick A teams.
Well done to everyone competing in all our teams this term.
Boys’ Sport
BABLAKE JUNIOR SCHOOL
There have been 89 Rugby matches in the Junior School alone this term against opposition from near and far!
Regular fixtures, tournaments and festivals have been played across all four age groups with a great deal of success. With every boy playing in a match this term and having the opportunity to represent the school it has been a great experience for everyone to travel, play and be involved in the camaraderie that a fixture can bring. For some playing in a match is about winning or losing but for others it can be more about enjoying a hot dog after the game with old and new friends. Whatever each boy gets out of a fixture is up to them but I hope
that each player is more fulfilled for the experience.
The U8 and U9 teams have been extremely successful this term. The U8s are undefeated beating Warwick, King Henry VIII, Solihull, Balsall Common and Eversfield. There is some unbelievable pace in the squad and I have no doubt they will be successful in the future. The U9s have competed in lots of festivals this season which has meant they have played a staggering 24 matches. They have also been very successful winning most of their matches, highlights being good wins for the A team against Bilton Grange, Crackley Hall, Solihull and King Henry VIII.
The U10s and U11s have found the more physical side of the
game really tough this year and have been unlucky in not seeing more results go their way. Under the watchful eye of Mr Price, the U11B team have arguably been the surprise team of the year with wins against Bilton Grange, Eversfield, Bromsgrove and Crackley Hall.
It is clear that Rugby is becoming ever more popular amongst our pupils, with many playing for clubs outside of school at the weekends. There are some great local rugby teams within Coventry and the surrounding areas with very good Junior sections. If you would like to know more about these and how you can get involved do get in touch with the clubs directly or ask Mr Benfield for some advice.
