El patio del cortijo del Algarrobo. Juanito y Carmela están desayunando.
JUANITO: ¡Quién iba a decir que tendríamos un huerto tan bonito aquí en el Algarrobo!
CARMELA: He pensado que podríamos instalar varios canteros.
JUANITO: De acuerdo, yo mismo los diseñaré. Lo haré como siempre, ubicándome en el centro y dejando un brazo de largo hacia la izquierda y un brazo de largo hacia la derecha.
CARMELA: Plantaremos hortalizas subterráneas y también aéreas. Y aromáticas. ¿Qué te parece?
JUANITO: Me parece muy bien. También podríamos plantar albahacas con tomates, cebollas, zanahorias y lechugas. ¡Ah, y ajos!
CARMELA: Sí. Y en las esquinas podemos poner geranios, eneldos y caléndulas en macetas.
JUANITO: Y a uno de los canteros lo llamaremos «España», y haremos que a él acudan xoaniñas, que son las mariquitas de Galicia, y sanantonitos, que son las de Canarias.
CARMELA: ¡Qué bonito va a quedar!
JUANITO: Sí, quedará muy bien.
CARMELA: ¿Qué piensas hacer con los pulgones que aparezcan?
JUANITO: Emplearé tres métodos: el primero, pulverizar las hortalizas con hoja de hiedra fermentada, y así combatiremos también la mosca blanca y la araña roja; el segundo, pulverizar las hortalizas con jabón casero de sosa c áu stica diluido en agua; y
el tercero, cultivar plantas que atraigan a las mariquitas.
CARMELA: Muy bien. Venga, vamos a fregar los platos, y luego nos ponemos con el cantero.
Juanito y Carmela salen.

JUANITO: Who knew we could have such a beautiful vegetable garden here in Algarrobo!
CARMELA: I was thinking we could make some flowerbeds.
JUANITO: OK, I’ll design them. I’ll do it as I always do, positioning myself in the centre and keeping an arm’s length to the left and an arm’s length to the right.
CARMELA: Let’s plant root vegetables and above-ground vegetables too. And some herbs. How does that sound?
JUANITO: That sounds very good to me. We could also plant some basil along with some tomatoes, onions, carrots and lettuce. Oh, and garlic!
CARMELA: Yes. We can put geraniums, dill and marigolds in pots in the corners of the flowerbeds.
JUANITO: One of the flowerbeds will be named Spain, with ladybirds from Galicia in it, called “xoaniñas”, and “sanantonitos”, which are the ones from the Canary Islands.
CARMELA: It will look so pretty!
JUANITO: Yes, it will look great.
