ANNUAL REPORT 2023

A WORD FROM LEADERSHIP

As we reflect on the past year at BATTI, we are filled with a profound sense of gratitude and accomplishment It has been a year of challenges, growth, and inspiring achievements, and I am thrilled to share our journey with you

One of the most remarkable aspects of the past year has been witnessing the resilience and dedication of our residents Despite the uncertainty that comes with a new university partner, they have continued to pursue their passion for education with unwavering determination Their perseverance serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative impact that effective teaching can have on individuals and communities

I am also incredibly proud of the collaborative spirit that defines BATTI Our partnerships with schools, educational organizations, and community stakeholders have strengthened and diversified our program, allowing us to better serve the needs of aspiring educators across the Bay Area

We are filled with optimism and excitement for the opportunities that lie ahead As we continue to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of education, we remain committed to fostering a culture of innovation and inclusion

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all of our supporters, donors, and partners who have played a vital role in our success Your generosity and unwavering belief in our mission have empowered us to make a meaningful difference in the lives of countless aspiring teachers and the students they serve

Together, we have achieved remarkable things, and I am confident that the best is yet to come for BATTI As we embark on the journey ahead, let us do so with a sense of optimism, joy, and boundless determination

This past September, our board of trustees met for our annual board retreat Not only is it a chance for our trustees to connect and share, it also affords us the luxury of time to think strategically and boldly about BATTI and its future Despite the many changes that BATTI has navigated these past few years, one thing remains constant: the board of trustees’ commitment to BATTI’s enduring capacity and legacy as the preeminent Bay Area teacher preparation program Just as teachers need to be nimble in their classrooms, ever responding to the changing needs of their students, BATTI’s board of trustees is equally prepared to reflect, respond and act in support of BATTI’s changing needs As such, two important goals emerged from our annual retreat as priorities for the board and for BATTI: fundraising and alumni engagement We have committed and will continue to commit considerable time and resources to ensuring that fundraising helps support BATTI’s growth and needs when necessary Of equal importance is our alumni base (of which I am proudly a member!) We seek to engage, connect with and learn beside our alumni through various means including social mixers and speaker series We want our alumni to come back, learn with us, laugh with us, network with us!

I feel incredibly grateful to serve alongside the entire board of trustees We are a group whose sole purpose is to see BATTI thrive I look forward to realizing these goals and hope that you will feel the impact in the BATTI experience

AT HOME WITH PACIFIC

We couldn’t be happier to continue our partnership with Pacific and their top-notch education team. We are delighted to introduce you to one of the superstars in that group, Brittany Auernig-Roan, Ed.D., Assistant Dean of Teacher Education.

BATTI: Tell us about your role at Pacific and what brought you to it. This role is multifaceted, and I feel like it is constantly changing Mainly, I oversee the administrative duties and student service-related items within the Teacher Education Department I am also an Assistant Professor and teach about five courses a year

I loved teaching Special Education at the high school level I was thoroughly fulfilled working with students who had emotional and behavioral disorders who had been removed from their public schools due to their extreme behaviors When I finished my doctoral degree, I decided I wanted to get into higher education to help new teachers learn how to support all students Pacific, and specifically Benerd College, supports our faculty in their areas of interest and expertise and encourages us to develop better programming for our

students I absolutely admire and feel privileged to work with an excellent Dean (Dr Patricia Campbell), extraordinary faculty, and stellar staff I cannot believe how lucky I am to be a part of such a dynamic group of people

What is the thing about your role as Assistant Dean that brings you the most joy?

I love to problem-solve creatively, and this role allows me to do so I find great joy in working with student teachers and interns who have challenging situations in their classrooms and helping them develop a plan to be successful

What sets Pacific apart and why? What makes you proud to be a Tiger?

We are a family All the faculty and staff are here for our students in every way Students know how to get ahold of someone immediately if something happens or if they need support We treat each student as an individual and support them in their lives

When they leave here, hiring schools know Pacific students are prepared and are phenomenal teachers I am proud to be a Tiger because our students are the best there is!

What about our new Pacific/BATTI partnership brings you excitement and why?

The limit does not exist! BATTI is a powerhouse organization; together, we can support so many future teachers in a way that has not been done before.

Is there one thing that you look forward to prioritizing in the coming years in partnership with BATTI?

Stepping into the public sector and attracting new students and future teachers of the global majority

Tell us something about you outside of your work What’s a fun Brittany fact?

My family is my everything! I have a beautiful two-year-old daughter and a rockstar wife who keeps me sane, grounded, and fully supported!

BATTI RESIDENTS RISING TO THE TOP

A big part of our BATTI magic is our rich community of folks who keep coming back for more Through the years BATTI alums have become mentor teachers, supervisors, instructors, administrators, and board members Read below to meet a few of these special individuals who continue to grow alongside BATTI

Alexandra Brandenburg - Principal, Garfield Elementary, OUSD

Hello! I am the proud principal at Garfield Elementary School in Oakland, CA I have been at Garfield for 6 years now I became a 2nd grade teacher at Garfield after graduating from BATTI in 2018, then I became the Literacy Coach, then the assistant principal and now the principal BATTI was an incredible program that supported me in becoming the leader I am today The teachers and colleagues I met in the program helped me to see the leadership potential in myself and follow my dreams of becoming a principal

Lisa Jako - Vice Principal, Michelle Obama Elementary, WCCUSD

In my current role as vice principal at Michelle Obama School in Richmond, I exercise the pedagogical knowledge I gained in BATTI on a daily basis The extent to which I use my knowledge of best instructional practices in coaching conversations cannot be understated However, more than anything, BATTI prepared me to see, love, and support every single child at the school as the individual learner and future citizen that they are I am so grateful for the way in which the program prepared me to fuse a high bar for instructional excellence with an equally high bar for the role of SEL and

community-building

within our school walls

Jimmy Santosa - BATTI Board Member and Lower School Makery Facilitator and Technology Integration Specialist at Burke’s Elementary

I am grateful for my amazing BATTI experience in Cohort 9, with dynamic instructors and colleagues that pushed a self-identified shy student out of his comfort zone. I believe that learning in the BATTI community strengthened my voice My questions and perspective were valued in discussions, which restored my belief that I have good questions and ideas to offer It felt natural to want to give back to an organization that has given me so much In leadership I have been reminded that having a healthy curiosity and speaking up is more important than having all the answers
