A WORD FROM LEADERSHIP ASHLEE GUTIERREZ, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Ashlee has worked across K-12, non-profits, and higher education designing programs that empower educators, cultivate inclusive cultures, and drive meaningful change.

With experience in strategic planning, executive coaching, and partnership building, she is passionate about creating environments where individuals and organizations can thrive.

At the heart of her work is the belief that when people feel seen valued, and supported, lasting impact follows.

Dear BATTI Community, This year marks a significant milestone in our journey as we complete a comprehensive three-year curriculum review that reinforces our founding belief: every student deserves an excellent teacher, and excellence means meeting every learner where they are.

Through thoughtful collaboration, we have woven culturally and linguistically responsive pedagogy throughout our program and strengthened our advisory model to provide more comprehensive support for our residents. These enhancements reflect our deep understanding that excellent teaching must embrace the richness of our diverse classrooms while supporting educators through their credentialing journey.

Our partnership with University of the Pacific continues to flourish, grounded in our shared vision of student-centered education. Together, we're pioneering innovative approaches to teacher preparation that prioritize practical, responsive solutions to real-world classroom challenges.

As we look ahead, we remain inspired by the potential of our work and grateful for the community that makes it possible. Thank you for being part of this journey of continuous growth and innovation.

A WORD FROM LEADERSHIP TERRI HAMER, BOARD CHAIR Terri brings more than 25 years of experience in financial management and senior leadership to Black Pine Circle, where she currently works as the Interim Chief Financial Officer. She most recently worked as the CFO at the San Francisco School.

Before that she worked at Greene Street Friends School and United Friends School in Pennsylvania, and at a Children’s nonprofit school in Massachusetts. She has an MBA from Suffolk University in Boston where she was born and raised.

It is with great pride and gratitude that I reflect on another remarkable year at the Bay Area Teacher Training Institute (BATTI). As Board Chair, I have had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the profound impact BATTI has on our educators, our schools, and most importantly, the students who benefit from the work of our graduates.

This past year, BATTI has continued to uphold its mission of preparing outstanding teachers through its innovative apprenticeship model, blending rigorous coursework with immersive, hands-on classroom experience. In a time when the need for skilled, reflective, and compassionate educators has never been greater, BATTI’s commitment to excellence remains unwavering.

None of this would be possible without the dedication of our faculty, mentors, partner schools, and— most importantly—you, our community of supporters. Your belief in the power of education and your generous contributions enable BATTI to expand financial aid, enhance professional development, and ensure that passionate aspiring teachers have access to this transformative program.

Looking ahead, we remain focused on strengthening our impact, deepening our partnerships, and fostering a diverse pipeline of educators who will shape the future of education. STRONGER TOGETHER CENTER FOR TEACHER INNOVATION (CTI) BATTI has been fortunate to partner with CTI since 2018 to support teachers through their post graduate Induction program. Tonya Almeida, CTI’s Director and Kathleen Bywater, CTI’s Program Manager speak to the BATTI-CTI partnership.

What makes these partnerships particularly impactful is our shared commitment to nurturing teacher success. Every partner in the CTI community is united by the common purpose of supporting new teachers in developing their practice. This shared vision creates a powerful support network that encompasses both the technical and emotional aspects of teacher development.

A 2023-2024 University of California Riverside study revealed remarkable results: 93% of teachers who completed CTI's Induction Program remained in the profession after five years—significantly outperforming the national retention rate of 70%.

These exceptional outcomes underscore the power of enduring partnerships, such as our collaboration with BATTI, in supporting new teachers and positively impacting the profession.

The relationship between the Program Manager and the Agency Representative is integral to the success of the Induction program. Ana and I meet at regular intervals throughout the year where we plan specifically for BATTI candidates and coaches. Our relationship is nothing short of collaborative, productive, and positive which is a direct reflection of Ana’s professionalism and commitment to her candidates and coaches. STRONGER TOGETHER CENTER FOR TEACHER INNOVATION (CTI) CTI-BATTI Induction Coach, Lana Harkness and BATTI alumni Luis Hernandez, tell us about the partnership between BATTI and CTI and how they felt supported by both layers.

Each time I meet with a candidate, I am reminded of the amazing opportunities available to them because of this unusual partnership between CTI and BATTI. CTI provides rich and relevant professional resources and support for both candidates and coaches. Together BATTI and CTI have created a powerful and personalized training program for new teachers because they invest in me and other coaches to ensure that we too are still learning and honing our skills. I am grateful to be a part of this partnership.

The weekly meetings are really helpful. Even on those occasions we didn’t have conversations about pedagogy or lessons, that check in was important. It gives you the feeling that you have someone looking out for you, someone you can think things through with, which is always really helpful. And is especially invaluable for new teachers. The CTI/BATTI New Teacher Induction program felt like BATTI induction using CTI tools, which is what I wanted.
