JAVIER CAMARENA T E N O R

Mexican tenor Javier Camarena is the preeminent Mozart and bel canto specialist of his generation. Praised for his burnished tone, gleaming high notes, flawless coloratura and veracious portrayals, he regularly appears in leading roles alongside today’s foremost stars at the world’s top opera houses.

Javier Camarena once again shows his great diversity in opera roles and as a concert performer in the 20-21 season. He starts off at the Vienna State Opera with performances of La fille du regiment, records a new staging at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino of Verdi’s Rigoletto with Riccardo Frizza on the podium and ends the season on the operatic stage at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona singing Lucia di Lammermoor. Javier Camarena is part of the Met Stars Live in Concert series and performs along with Angel Blue, Pretty Yende and Matthew Polenzani the New Year’s Eve Gala, live from the Parktheater im Kurhaus Göggingen, in Augsburg, Germany. Together with the pianist Ángel Rodríguez he procees to present their recital programme in Spain once again at the Palau in Barcelona, in

Zaragoza and in Bilbao and joins the stage with Plácido Domingo for a gala concert at the Bolshoi-Theatre in Moscow. Further concert engagements bring Camarena to the Opéra de MonteCarlo, the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Oviedo, Murcia, Burgos and to the Festival Castell de Peralada for the 35th anniversary gala concert.

In the 2019-20 season, Javier Camarena starred at the Opéra national de Paris in highly appraised performances of La fille du regiment. At Teatro Real Madrid he gave his role debut as Gualtiero in Bellini’s Il Pirata. With pianist Ángel Rodríguez, he started off the season in the beautiful concert hall in Santander, Spain and then proceeded to present their recital debut at the Los Angeles Opera. A greatly successful recital tour through Spain took them to the Gran Theatre del Liceu, Barcelona, to San Sebastian, to the Auditorio Principe in Oviedo, the Palau in Valencia and the Auditorio Nacional in Madrid.

It was at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City that Camarena made his professional debut, as Tonio in a 2004 staging of La fille du régiment, and he has since returned to the house for three further productions. In 2007, he joined the ensemble of the Zurich Opera. Four years later, he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera as Rossini’s Almaviva, which is one of the signature roles for which he is best known; others include the same composer’s Don Ramiro and Comte Ory; Mozart’s Belmonte and Ferrando; Donizetti’s Nemorino and Arturo; Verdi’s Fenton; and Bellini’s Elvino. Equally celebrated for appearances at San Francisco Opera, Paris Opera, Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu, Dresden’s Semperoper and the Vienna and Bavarian State Operas, the tenor has collaborated with such

TRANSLATIONS “L ’amour! L’amour! ... Ah! Lève-toi soleil …” from Roméo et Juliette Ah! get up, sun! make the stars pale Who, in the azure without veils, shine in the firmament. Ah! get up! seem! seem! Pure and charming star! She’s dreaming! she undoes a hair curl who is caressing his cheek! Love! Love! give him my wishes! She speaks! That she is beautiful! Ah! I did not hear anything! But her eyes speak for her, and my heart answered! Ah! get up, sun, etc. .

“Vainement, ma bien-aimée” from Le roi d’Ys Since these jealous guardians will not be moved to mercy, ah, let me tell you of my anguish and my torment! In vain, my beloved, do I seem to despair: next to your closed door I am determined to stay! Suns may be extinguished, nights replace days, but without blaming you and without complaining, I shall stay here forever! I know that you have a kind heart and the hour will soon come when the hand which now pushes me away will reach out towards mine! Do not delay too long in allowing yourself to be won over by your tender feelings; If Rozenn does not appear soon soon, I, alas, shall die!

8

“La donna e mobile” from Rigoletto ” Woman is flighty. Like a feather in the wind, she changes in voice and in thought, always a lovely, pretty face, she changes her words and her thoughts in tears or in laughter, she’s untrue. Always miserable is he who trusts her, he who confides in her his unwary heart! Yet one never feels fully happy who from that bosom does not drink love!

“Funiculì, Funiculà” Last night, lil’Annie, I climbed there Do you know where to? Do you know where to? To where this ungrateful heart of yours can’t make me suffer anymore! suffer anymore! To where the fire fries you, but if you run for it it lets you be! It lets you be! And it doesn’t haunt your heart, nor it burns you down with a glance alone! With a glance alone! Goin’, goin’ on a..., goin’ go... rope-a-here, rope-a-there Nor am I goin’ from the earth to the mountain it’s just one step away! It’s just one step away! One can see France, Procida and Spain, I have eyes only for you! I have eyes only for you! As if pulled by a string, no sooner said than done, they go way up! They blow like the sudden wind, alas, they go ‘n’ go! Alas, they go ‘n’ go! Goin’, goin’ on a..., goin’ go...

9

rope-a-here, rope-a-there

I won’t raise it, oh I won’t, I won’t raise it, my head anymore! My head anymore! It’s finished, some is back, some is gone, always thither (back to you)! Always thither! My head turns, turns, around, around, around you! Around you! This heart of mine is always singing one monotonous chant: Marry me, oh baby! Marry me, oh baby! Goin’, goin’ on a..., goin’ go... rope-a-here, rope-a-there

“O sole mio” What a beautiful thing, it’s a sunny day The gentle breeze after the storm The air’s so fresh, it feels like a celebration What a beautiful thing, it’s a sunny day But another sun, that’s even brighter It’s my own sun, that’s upon your face! When night comes and the sun sets down I almost start to feel blue I’d stay below your window when night comes and the sun sets down But another sun, that’s even brighter It’s my own sun, that’s upon your face!

10

“Te quiero, Morena” I love you like one loves glory, like one loves money, like one loves a mother, I love you. I’m dying, Aragon girl, I’m dying for your little rosy mouth, for your flattering laugh, for the eyes of your face, I’m dying. It’s the jota that I always sang, the salt of my earth, and olé! Olé!

“No puede ser” It cannot be so! This woman is good. She cannot be a wicked woman! In her look, like a strange light, I’ve seen that this woman is unhappy. She cannot be a cheap siren who poisoned every moment of my life. It cannot be so! Because I’ve seen her pray, because I’ve seen her love, because I’ve seen her cry! Those eyes that cry don’t know how to lie. Bad women do not look like that. Gleaming in her eyes I saw two tears, and my hope is they may gleam for me, they may gleam for me. Vivid light of my hopes Be merciful with my love Because I cannot pretend, because I cannot be silent, because I cannot live!

11

“Alma mia” My soul alone, forever Alone Without anyone understanding your suffering, your horrible suffering Pretending an always full existence of joy and pleasure If I found a soul like mine, how many secret things would he tell A soul that when looking at me, without saying anything He told me everything with his eyes A soul that intoxicates with soft breath that when kissing I felt what I feel And sometimes I wonder what would happen If I found a soul like mine A soul that when looking at me, without saying anything He told me everything with his eyes A soul that intoxicates with soft breath that when kissing I felt what I feel And sometimes I wonder what would happen If I found a soul like mine.

“Granada” Granada, land of dreams for me My song becomes gypsy-like when it is for you. My song made of fantasy My song a melancholy flower that I come to give to you. Granada, blood-stained soil in bull fight afternoons Woman who preserves the enchantment of Moorish eyes.

I dream of you rebellious, a gypsy covered with flowers And I kiss your scarlet mouth, juicy apple that speaks to me of love affairs Granada, I have nothing else to give you than a bouquet of roses Of roses of sweet fragrance that framed the dark virgin. Granada your land is full of lovely women, of blood and sun.
