CREATION AND DEVELOPMENT// Lysefiord, Noway Whether by way of award-winning films like “The Dark Knight,” Emmy-winning animated programs like “Batman: The Animated Series,” video game appearances such as the record-breaking “Batman: Arkham Asylum,” or the countless comics stacking comic book shelves and digital libraries, the Joker stands unquestionably as the most recognizable and popular comic book villain in pop culture history. Unpredictable, violent and incredibly dangerous, he is chaos personified and has taken on everyone from his archenemy Batman to even the Man of Steel.

But Gotham remains his primary home and Batman his biggest adversary, and no hero is perhaps better suited as in many ways, the Joker is the polar opposite of the Dark Knight.

Both were created by a great tragedy, but Batman has since vowed to do whatever it takes to prevent similar incidents, the Joker revels in creating chaos and destroying lives, believing that life’s a big joke and psychotically demonstrating that in a moment, it can all change.

Not much is known about his past, but his acts during the present are what define the Joker as one of the greatest threats to our heroes and the people they’ve sworn to protect. He’s killed a Robin, crippled Batgirl, and tortured and murdered countless people throughout the DC Universe—all just for a laugh.

• The character is considered one of the four top comic book characters, alongside Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man. • In 2006, the Joker was number one on Wizard magazine’s “100 Greatest Villains of All Time”. In 2008 Wizard’s list of “200 Greatest Comic Book Characters of All Time” placed the Joker fifth, and the character was eighth on Empire’s list of “50 Greatest Comic Book Characters” (the highest-ranked villain on both lists) • In 2009 the Joker was second on IGN’s list of “Top 100 Comic Book Villains”, and in 2011 Wired named him “Comics’ Greatest Supervillain”. Complex, CollegeHumor and WhatCulture named the Joker the greatest comic book villain of all time while IGN listed him the top DC Comics villain in 2013, and Newsarama as the greatest Batman villain.

The Joker is one of the few comic book supervillains to be represented on children’s merchandise and toys, appearing on items including action figures, trading cards, board games, money boxes, pajamas, socks, and shoes. The Jokermobile was a popular toy; a Corgi die-cast metal replica was successful during the 1950s, and in the 1970s a Joker-styled, Flower power-era Volkswagen microbus was manufactured by Mego.[135] In 2015, “The Joker: A Serious Study of the Clown Prince of Crime” became the first academic book to be published about a supervillain.

In addition to his role on Shameless, Monaghan has continued to appear in a variety of episodic television roles. In 2011, he guest-starred as Nick Peyton, a teenage boy accused of murdering his Marine father, on the CBS crime series NCIS. That same year he appeared as Jonathan McKenna on the TNT mystery series Rizzoli & Isles. In 2012, he guest-starred as Eddie Sandow, a 19-year-old who creates a hostage situation after his father is accused of sexual assault, on the NBC crime series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

Monaghan first came to national attention in 2003 for his role as Winthrop Paroo opposite Kristin Chenoweth and Matthew Broderick in the ABC telev1 ision adaptation of The Music Man. When recounting the decision to cast the 9-year-old Monaghan, director and executive-producer Jeff Bleckner explained, “There are some people, when you put them up on film, they sort of pop off the screen at you.

That’s how it was with Cameron. From the second we saw him, he was it. We were looking for anybody who had that wonderful appeal. And Cameron had it.”

In addition to his television credits, Monaghan has continued to appear in a variety of feature film roles. In 2011, he co-starred as high school sophomore Corey Doyle in the Disney teen drama Prom. In 2012, he portrayed Jake, the son of an attractive YMCA director in the sports themed comedy 2nd Serve. In 2014, Monaghan starred as Adam McCormick, a small-town high school athlete who becomes consumed by the death of one of his classmates in the independent drama Jamie Marks Is Dead. That same year, he appeared as Mason Ashford, the best friend and romantic interest to Rose in the fantasy adventure film Vampire Academy. He also starred as Asher in the dystopian movie The Giver, alongside Brenton Thwaites, Odeya Rush, Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep.

When I got asked to play the joker I didn’t really have a big gregarious laugh personally, so I was a bit terrified. This is a guy who’s laughing, and is laughing in a way that is very unique. So I worked on it, worked on it, worked on it and came up with something that is... very strange, I have to admit.”

Leto, who openly complained about his lack of screen time in Suicide Squad, is dedicated to playing the prince clown of darkness for as long as he can, apparently. The role changed Leto’s life.

anuary 22, 2018 marks the 10-year anniversary of Heath Ledger’s death.

Gone too soon. It’s what you say when someone dies too young, and it couldn’t be more fitting with regards to Heath Ledger, who passed away before his 29th birthday of an accidental prescription drug overdose. It was just six months before the release of The Dark Knight, which would earn him the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

So three different actors — Jude Law, Colin Farrell, and Johnny Depp — stepped in to complete the film and honor the late star. Ledger may have felt like a Hollywood staple, but he was a young actor just starting to find his stride.

Being that the Joker was one of his last roles — and the bar by which all villains will now be measured — it’s easy to forget Ledger had only been in 16 movies before his untimely death. He wasn’t even able to finish his final movie, Terry Gilliam’s 2009 film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

Even though by all accounts, he was a happy, loving father to his daughter Matilda with ex Michelle Williams, he evoked deep sadness on-screen, if it wasn’t an apparent part of his own life. His ability to get at his characters’ humanity made each of them so individual. Or, to paraphrase The New York Times, whether in a Stetson or a wig, Ledger was an actor who was hard to pin down.

After his death, Ledger has been likened more and more to James Dean and River Phoenix — actors, like himself, with so much promise whose careers were cut short. What more could Ledger have done if he’d had the chance? It’s the sad question we’re all left with. But we’ve also been left with his body of work, which is filled with roles we still talk about today, nearly eight years after his passing, and will continue to revisit in years to come.

Cameron Monaghan sat down with the Build Series to talk about his role on Gotham for the last four seasons. He started out playing Jerome Valeska, whom the writers referred to as the prototype for the Joker, but not necessarily the Joker himself. Then this season we were introduced to Jeremiah Valeska, Jerome’s twin brother also played by Monaghan, who has gone from being a reserved architect to being hit by Insanity Gas and is now on the verge of doing some series damage to Gotham after having possibly killed one of the main characters.

Monaghan brings up some very good points about the role he’s playing and why they haven’t just said the character is the Joker. Unlike the comic version that was created 75 years ago, Gotham‘s version of the character is more of an ideal than a person.
