Outdoors/Nature »GREEN HILLS SWIM CLUB

»LITTLE BUFFALO Just 30 minutes from the JCC via 322-W, this state park/waterpark hybrid features 8 miles of hiking trails, campgrounds, and plenty of places to have a picnic. The main attraction is its swimming pool, which has multiple slides and water play areas. Get there early if you’re going on the weekends as it fills up fast.

When to Go: The park is open year-round.

For decades, Green Hills has been a meeting point for community members of all ages. The site features a large pool, picnic tables and pavilion, concessions, hiking trails, and most of all…you and your friends and family! Be sure to come out early and often this summer.

»HERSHEY GARDENS

»LAKE TOBIAS Did you know you can experience a thrilling safari, a reptile exhibit, and an up-close petting zoo all within a half-hour’s drive of the JCC? Lake Tobias is an exciting and affordable place to take a trip that will feel like you’ve gone halfway around the world as you come into contact with animals like the African lion, Bengal tiger, monkeys, pythons, camels, and more. Their safari exhibit is a 45-minute guided tour featuring more than 500 animals.

When to go: Lake Tobias recommends visiting at alligator feeding time, around 4pm each Sunday.

Green Hills Swim Club

Right down the street from Hersheypark, this lesser-known counterpart is a great way to give kids a new taste of the Chocolate City. Hershey Gardens’ 23 acres of perfectly gardened beauty is a good place to start your visit. Also on site are the Butterfly Atrium, Children’s Garden, and Educational & Horticultural Wing. The Gardens are more than 100 years old, but continue to draw a smile across generations.

When to Go: Big Bands & Blooms event will be held on Friday, June 29 from 6:30pm – 8:30pm, featuring the Hershey Symphony’s Big Band. Open daily from 9AM – 6PM. Marvelous Mondays – Every Monday thru 8/13, 10am-12pm – featuring an activity, crafts, and entertainment in the Children’s Garden each week.

Arts & Museums »SUSQUEHANNA ART MUSEUM Located in historic Midtown Harrisburg, the Susquehanna Art Museum is quite the tribute to artistic efforts across a number of cultures and interests. Its current main gallery exhibit features the work of Romare Bearden, who was noted by the New York Times as “the nation’s foremost collagist.”

»AACA MUSEUM The car museum in Hershey showcases transportation of all types dating back to the 1890s. Legislators visit Brenner Family ELC

t is always a joy to see our community through someone else’s eyes.

On May 30, we had the honor of hosting a visit with several local elected officials and staffers. Rep. Rothman, Rep. Helm and one of her staff, and staff from Rep. Kim, Rep. Marsico, and Sen. DiSanto’s office joined us for a tour of the JCC, with a focus on the Brenner Family Early Learning Center. This visit also included a tour of The Silver Academy, and an informational (and delicious!!) lunch hosted by the Jewish Home, which included briefings about JFS and the Home, and a tour of the Campus of the Jewish Home. Our guests have been invited to an open house in June at JFS, which will showcase the new renovations in their building and give our guests another opportunity to learn more about their services.

We are appreciative of our elected officials’ interest in the value of the services offered by our Jewish agencies and the positive impact of the investment state funding provides such as EITC, Medical Assistance, Dauphin County Department of Aging funding for senior club meals and Kosher Meals on Wheels, funding for foster care, and special state grant opportunities.

Hank Butler, Director of the Pennsylvania Jewish Coalition (PJC), invited the Federation to participate in one of these statewide visits. We are grateful for his coordination of this special morning. PJC, working individually and collectively with others, represents Pennsylvania’s Jewish communities before state government and with other Pennsylvanians.

Jewish values guide the PJC’s focus on issues of importance to these communities, including public policy initiatives and funding and regulation of the delivery of human services.

Our Federation is an active member of PJC and I was elected its treasurer this year. Past editions of “Community Review” have reported on accomplishments such as expansion of Holocaust Education in Pennsylvania public and charter schools and Pennsylvania’s Trade Agreement with Israel. You can learn more about PJC at http://www.pajewishcoalition.org.

The Federation mission is to ensure that the Jewish community of Greater Harrisburg flourishes by serving as its central unifying communal organization, and by strengthening the bonds within our community and with Israel and Jews around the world. This event and our involvement with PJC are just two examples of how we fulfill this important role.

I encourage you to learn more about the important work of our agencies so please save the date of October 10 when we will have our next Joint Annual Agency Meeting.

Bloom’s Back Home

I

f you bring up the JCC around Phil Bloom, you are not likely to get off that topic for a long time. His love for the community and the building stretches back to his youth, when he spent day after day after day soaking in all that the building had to offer.

“Literally, every waking hour was spent at the JCC. I went to The Silver Academy from Kindergarten through 8th grade. When we weren’t in school, we’d be at the bowling alley downstairs, or hanging out in the teen lounge with the jukebox. The teen lounge was really happening in the 70s,” recalls Phil.

Phil’s appreciation and involvement started with his father. “Growing up, my dad was really involved with the Federation. He was a threetime Vice President of the JCC Board of Directors and was really giving of his time and money to the Federation and the JCC. He always instilled that it’s my responsibility to help and to pay it forward. L’dor V’dor. That’s really the basis: that my generation has to step up and that’s what I want to instill in the next generation.”

After moving home from Kansas 7 months ago, Phil became involved with such vigor that it’s hard to believe he ever left. He joined the Federation Board of Directors a few months after moving home to Harrisburg, and is already the chair of the Annual Campaign of the Jewish Federation. “A lot has changed, but there’s still that feeling when I walk in, I feel at home.”

With the unique perspective of someone who has lived both in and outside the area, Phil feels as though he can bring a fresh look and feel to the campaign. “Times change and we have to change as well. I think that the days of just calling somebody and asking for a pledge are somewhat antiquated. So, my vision for the campaign is to reach out to every individual that is involved with the

community. Not just by telephone, but with personal visits, texts, facetime, whatever they prefer. Not just once a year, but throughout.

We need to find out what their perception of the Federation is, what we’re doing well, and how we can improve to make them more satisfied with their involvement and experience.”

The campaign theme this year, “Come Back Home,” means more to Phil than simply the fact that he literally moved back to Pennsylvania after 32 years away. “The day I moved back I was home again, in a Jewish community, and welcomed with open arms. I

knew that I had a place where I would always be wanted and welcome. There are a lot of people loyal to the JCC, and there are also opportunities for people who live here to ‘come back home.’ Life is busy. You might have a job, family, or other responsibilities. And no matter what, you can always come back home, because we’re here and we welcome you with open arms. You can always find something you love about the JCC and something you want to get involved in.”

Phil’s goal for the campaign extends beyond the immediate community, as well. “We want to enrich the Jewish experience here, but also

more than that. It’s important that we support Israel. We used to raise enough funds to do that, but right now, we don’t. It’s important as a Federation that we have resources that support Jews in need, not just here, but around the world.”

With these wide-ranging goals, Phil’s commitment still ties back to his love of this community, and the JCC and Green Hills.

“When we were kids, we’d be down here every Sunday during the winter time for Iddy Biddy, play rehearsals, or just to hang out. Then in the summer, we’d migrate to Green Hills and we were there every Saturday and Sunday from 11am until 7pm. It was what everyone did. Big Steve Rubin used to be the cook, and at mealtime, you had chicken, steak, potatoes, and corn for like 5 bucks a person. I really want this community to get back to using that space to bring people together.”

Phil believes without the campaign, these goals would not be possible in today’s age.

“The Federation is the base for Judaism in Central PA. Without that we lose our culture. Temples are fantastic, and I’m incredibly satisfied with my affiliation. But this is the root and the core. It’s important that we sustain it so everyone has a home for generations to come. It starts with the education that we offer you as a youngster, so when you get out on your own you have that Jewish base. It continues as an adult, where you can keep learning what the issues are and the challenges facing the Jewish community, and how you can help. But most of all, it’s just a place that you can gather and be part of the family, at home. People will accept you no matter what because you have that one common bond of this community, this building, and you can be at home, whether you’ve moved away or been here all along.”

For Hiking Enthusiasts: A Guide from David Rothstein and Marielle Macher

O

ne of the places that is most appealing to us in this area is the Appalachian Trail. It passes right by Harrisburg, and there are tons of great hikes on it or nearby. The Appalachian Trail is really just an incredible national resource. Some of the best landmarks to hike are Table Rock on Peters Mountain (medium difficulty), Hawk Rock in Duncannon (difficult and mentioned in this issue), and the Clarks Ferry Loop, right on the

east side of the Susquehanna River (difficult).

They are all a mix of nice hikes through the woods interspersed with stunning views. If you hike the Trail in the summer, you can easily meet people who are hiking the entire 2,000+ mile trail and passing through Pennsylvania on their way. All the Appalachian Trail hikes have great views of either the valley or the river.

For an easier hike, Wildwood Park is great.

There is an incredible amount of wildlife

there for a hike that’s so close to the city.

Another very interesting one is the hike to Bordner Cabin in Swatara State Park. It’s a really neat two-story cabin that was built (by hand) in the 1930s at the base of a small waterfall in the middle of the woods. Eventually, the land that it was on became part of Swatara State Park, and a group of people worked to preserve it. It’s an easy hike, and a good one for kids.

it, plus the waterfall is nice especially if you go in late winter or early spring.

It’s incredible that you can leave the JCC and be on the Appalachian Trail in 15 minutes. It’s just an amazing resource to have so nearby to the community. And that’s really just the beginning of it; there are so many other hikes, hidden natural gems, and deeply forested areas that are right near the city of Harrisburg and worth exploring.

Being Himself: A Story from our Community

I

n many ways, Floyd Kessler is your typical teenager. He likes to watch sci-fi and horror shows like Stranger Things and American Horror Story. He is an artist, creating artwork in many forms using mixed media and he attends Capital Area School for the Arts Charter School.

He is also transgender, meaning that his personal identity and gender do not correspond with his birth sex. From a young age, he realized he was a little bit different from other children.

“There wasn’t a defining moment that I thought ‘this is odd.’ Looking back there were plenty of times that I felt odd, but I didn’t have a word for it. When I was little, it was always really hard to get me into a dress.”

Although he may not have been able to recognize what was different about him, Floyd doesn’t seem to have a difficult time embracing who he is. “If there was any embarrassment, it was more in that I wondered if other people felt this way, too. It’s like if you put one sock on, one shoe on, one sock on, one shoe on…and all of a sudden you wonder if people do it a different way. You’re embarrassed to ask.”

Floyd attended Harrisburg Academy through eighth grade, before switching to CASA, saying the curriculum at the arts school leaned more toward his interests. “CASA is a much better fit for me.

And it’s where I started to come to the realization that I was a guy. CASA focuses more on the individual. I came out at the beginning of sophomore year to my parents. But in reality I came out to my friends well before that. I think that when you’re in that position, if you have close friends, it’s good to get your friends support first, in case family support hasn’t progressed to that level. Of course, my parents were supportive.”

Now a rising senior, Floyd is active in Keshet, a National organization for LGBTQ Jews. “They hold shabbatonim throughout the year. The first shabbaton, I went as a participant Floyd Kessler, local budding artist and it was really great because there were all these different kinds of people, and they were all Jewish. It focused on intersectionality and was really cool. Since then, I’ve been helping to plan and run our Shabbatonim for other people. It’s a really great experience no matter who you are, what kind of Jew, or what sect of Judaism you are from.

It’s inclusive of everyone and you can find every single type of person there.”

With one year left in high school, Floyd is looking forward to moving on to college. As he prepares for college, Floyd is preparing portfolios to showcase the work he has created. “I do a lot of mixed media art. I don’t really stick to one thing. Themes range a lot on any given day, but most of my pieces are produced from something that I’m passionate about or interested in. A lot of my work comes from things that happen around me whether it is personally or on a global scale. Some of my art is made to make the viewer think, but other artworks are just outlets for my emotions. Those themes tend to make the pieces that I’m most proud of.”

“My top schools are Alfred University and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. They’re both art schools, although one is very urban and the other is more rural.” Despite the contrast between the two schools, Floyd is confident that he’ll find more people similar to him. “I strongly believe that anywhere you go, there are things that divide, but you will also find a center, where there’re different groups of people that are drawn by similar things. That’s especially true in the arts world.”

Floyd is proud to be himself, and that includes his background as a Jew. “I’m Jewish and I’m proud of being Jewish, culturally and ethnically. Being Trans isn’t that odd and being Trans and Jewish isn’t that odd. I’ve met so many transgender Jewish teens. I think some people think, ‘Oh, he’s Trans and he’s Jewish, how does that work?’ But it works and it’s not as odd or unusual as people think. People just might not know someone it applies to yet. I’m sure they will later in life; they just haven’t yet. And that’s OK.”

Famous Israeli - Pnina Tamano-Shata

P

nina Tamano-Shata (Hebrew: ‫ונמת הנינפ‬-‫‬הטש‬, Amharic: ፕኒና ታምኖ እሸቴ; born 1 November 1981) is an Israeli lawyer, journalist and politician. Tamano-Shata was often the target of racism in Israel. As a child, she felt “different”, and noted that she did not have any friends and other children threw stones at her for being Ethiopian. She was often involved in student protests against the discrimination of her community. In 2013, she wanted to donate blood but “was told that Israelis of Ethiopian origin were not allowed to donate for fear of spreading HIV”.

Pnina Tamano-Shata (b. 1981) was born in Wuzaba, Ethiopia, the granddaughter of a renowned Ethiopian rabbi. When she was three years old, her family fled Ethiopia due to civil war and famine. Israeli Hercules planes rescued her family in Sudan and brought them to Israel in a secret mission known as Operation Moses, which brought 8,000 Ethiopian Jews back to their ancestral home. (Another 14,000 were brought in 1991 through Operation Solomon.) Pnina and her

family spent several years in an immigrant facility before settling in Petah Tikva. From age 11, she worked to support her struggling family, and in high school was placed in the gifted program. After completing her military service, Pnina enrolled in law school. She was the president of the school’s Ethiopian Student Union, and was a noted social justice activist. After graduating, she became a reporter for Israel’s Channel 1. Five years later, she was covering a protest by Ethiopians in Israel and instead of reporting with the bias that her bosses asked for, joined the protesters herself. This inspired her to quit the media and enter politics. She joined the Yesh Atid party. When the party won a surprising 19 seats in the 2013 elections, Pnina became a Member of Knesset. This made her the first Ethiopian woman to hold a Knesset seat. She worked tirelessly for equality and affordable housing in Israel. Although she lost her seat in the 2015 elections, Pnina is still a vocal activist, role model, and an important leader for the 150,000 Ethiopian Jews in Israel.

Hawk Rock Overlook, Appalachian Trail, Duncannon, PA

Hawk Rock Overlook in Duncannon, Pennsylvania

H

arrisburg, PA is fortunate to be located within easy reach of many outdoor activities, including proximity to the famous Appalachian Trail, without the need to walk all the way from Georgia to Maine (2,000 Miles).

Hawk Rock Overlook is a short one mile up, one mile back hike to an elevated view point, with great views of Duncannon the Susquehanna River, and Sherman’s Creek emptying into it n.

It is less than nine miles, as the crow flies, from the Harrisburg JCC. At a very easy pace uphill, an hour is more than enough to go up to the overlook and probably half that coming down. It is suitable for all ages.

Bring a picnic basket while resting atop and enjoying the view (don’t forget to carry out all that you carry in).

Directions: Cross the Susquehanna River on the I-81 bridge south. Exit at first exit on the West Shore side (exit 65), going on 11/15 north. Zero your trip odometer upon exiting and measure/drive 9.5 miles. Then exit to the right. The exit is immediately after crossing Sherman’s Creek on a bridge. The exit will take you under 11/15 to a stop sign. Turn left onto Main Street. Drive a 1/4 of a mile and turn right onto Little Boston Road and immediately right again onto Watershed Drive. Continue until the road ends in a gravel parking area. This portion is 0.15 mile. Once parked, there’s a path going uphill.

Alternatively, GPS could be used with Watershed Drive, Duncannon as a destination.

Retired Army Colonel John Maietta to Speak at Senior Adult Lunch

n Thursday, July 26, 2018, John Maietta will speak on “What so proudly we hail”: The Story of The Star-Spangled Banner. For a hundred years after its birth during the War of 1812, The StarSpangled Banner was routinely condemned for its musical roots in a British drinking tune. Later, it vied with other popular songs (including America the Beautiful and God Bless America) for designation as our official anthem – an honor not achieved until 1931.

Its high point as a symbol of freedom, unity, and resilience came after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, when members of Congress joined in singing it on the steps of the U.S. Capitol.

All this and more is the subject of “What So Proudly We Hail,” a fascinating look at the history and meaning behind our beloved national anthem.

The presenter, John Maietta, is a retired Army colonel who served as an advisor in the Iraqi police headquarters in 2009. Please make your reservations for lunch at the JCC and our speaker with Cheryl at 236-9555, EXT. 3115 by July 25, 2018.

»JOHN HARRIS & SIMON CAMERON MANSION First built in the mid-1700s, the Harris-Cameron Mansion is now home to the Historical Society of Dauphin County. To celebrate its 250th anniversary, the National Historic Landmark underwent a major restoration in 2016. Multiple tours are available each week, and a research library on the grounds is also open to the public.

A must-see for families traveling to Harrisburg is the Harsco Science Center at the Whitaker Center for Science & the Arts with three floors of interactive exhibits and scientific discoveries that’ll keep the kids learning for hours. Build a wooden car and test its downhill velocity, splash around while learning why things float, get creative on the digital graffiti wall, and erect a skyscraper on the block table. Curious kiddos can explore the child-sized city, KidsPlace, where climbing, crawling and construction is encouraged!

The Whitaker Center is also home to Central Pennsylvania’s largest digital movie screen showing immersive 3D documentaries and blockbuster hits daily.

While you might think that your youngster is too little for museums, the State Museum of Pennsylvania offers the Curiosity Connection, a hands-on space for kids from 1-5 that’ll get them excited about learning. There are secret passages, floor-to-ceiling trees to crawl through, life-size farm animal models, and one larger-the-life chicken you can see from the street! The Curiosity Connection is included in with general admission, so take your time exploring everything the museum has to offer like a full-scale 19th century town!

Starting with the State Museum of Pennsylvania, kids can browse exhibits on anthropology, archaeology, transportation, geology, paleontology, and Pennsylvania mammals and ecology - and maybe even discover their calling! Where else would you find a museum dedicated to chocolate? At The Hershey Story, Museum on Chocolate Avenue, learn all about Milton S. Hershey, the man behind the chocolate bars you love so much. From bankruptcy to brilliance, his story is inspiring and fascinating. The rumble of innovative machinery and collection of historical items lets kids experience what it was like in his chocolate factory. They can design their own candy wrapper, look at sugar crystals under a microscope, and work up an appetite for chocolate as they discover the legacy of the man who built a town on chocolate!

The Pennsylvania National Fire Museum has all the bells and whistles! From marveling at the horse-drawn carriages to honoring the brave firefighters who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, the Fire Museum celebrates firefighting history with remarkable artifacts, trucks, and vintage helmets. Ask the staff to ring the (stillworking!) antique alarm system that would alert firemen when and where one of the city’s pulldown fire alarm boxes was triggered!

Harrisburg is also home to the National Civil War Museum, one of the largest of its kind in the world dedicated solely to the story of the American Civil War. While the topic of the Civil War is hefty for young children, visitors can watch videos and get a sense of what it was like back then, as told by the storyline of two families on either side of the battlefield.

For kids ages 6-10, we can’t leave out the Whitaker Center, mentioned above. The exhibits on weather and nature, health and the body, transportation and manufacturing, and technology behind movies and TV will make their science class come to life!

Adventure Sports in Hershey offers hours of family-friendly competition! Kids can practice their swing in the batting cages, on the 18-hole miniature golf course, or at the driving range. Get behind the wheel of a go-kart or duck behind a fence during outdoor laser tag before splashing and squirting each other on the bumper boats. Silver Academy Wows with Dual Willy Wonka Performances at JCC

n May 23, the Silver Academy presented two performances of Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka Kids at the Harrisburg JCC. The Silver Academy’s Music and Drama Club, represented by 27 students in grades 1-8, began rehearsals after the High Holidays. The students rehearsed only 45 minutes once a week with three additional rehearsals after Passover. As the Academy music teacher I served as the show’s director, the music director, and the choreographer. As in past productions, the idea was to present a “visually stripped down” production with minimal set, props, and costumes. The emphasis was put on the educational value of the rehearsal process and the excellence of the final product. When unexpectedly, in March, a local middle school rented its sets and props to The Silver Academy, the students learned how to incorporate the visual element into their show. Throughout the process all the students developed and improved their acting, singing, and movement skills.

The students had a chance to preview their show twice - to the JCC senior club and to the residents of the Jewish Home, and received positive and enthusiastic feedback.

Willy Wonka was the stage debut for The Silver Academy’s first graders, playing the very important roles of the Oompa Loompas. Emily Halper, the mother of Jane, said “we cannot express how proud we were to see our daughter smiling, singing, and performing on stage alongside her schoolmates. All the students shined during the performances.” Cynthia Graeff, the mother of another first grader, Vinnie, described the performances as “funny, sweet, and thoroughly entertaining.” She added “Under professional direction, the quality of the students’ singing and acting just got better and better. Everyone in the audience was impressed and delighted.” Niema Schertz, mother of fourth grader Abie, who played Charlie Bucket, agreed: “The professional direction and choice of the production brought out the excitement, energy, and talent of our children. They enjoy doing it and we are so proud!”

In all, the rehearsals and performances were a great experience for all the students. They’re looking forward to next year’s show. Be sure to follow announcements of when it will be. We look forward to seeing you in the audience.

or this issue’s Hebrew word, I thought Shvil would be nice. Shvil (‫ )ליבש‬or path is what you would take when taking one of the hikes we list in this issue.

Like so many other words in Hebrew that appear in the bible already, shvil also is rooted in Aramaic: shvila, and is close to Arabic: Shabil.

In modern Hebrew it is also closely related to the word trail (shoval), and is the word used to denote the path that is created when you part your hair, in the side or the middle. There is a song from the 80s about a path in the middle and a path in the side (shvil ba’emtsa, shvil ba’tsad), which is a play on words as it seems to mean about parting your hair, but the song was used as an opening for a show about hikes and trails to enjoy in Israel.

Two Articles in One: A Fictional Story

he other day when I picked up my newspaper I was quite shocked. Instead of the correct date, it was dated June of 2053, they had accidentally sent me the paper from 35 years from now. (Viewers of the 90’s era show, Early Edition, will know that this sometimes happens.) I was excited to have an insight into the future, especially since there was an article in there about Jewish Harrisburg, but unfortunately I lost the paper (with a baby at home this should have been expected). I have tried here to recreate what I read that morning, but since I forgot exactly what was written I ended up with two versions. I do not remember which one was the correct one. We have the ability to choose which future will come to fruition.

VERSION 1: Harrisburg Area Synagogues Combining For many years there had been five distinct synagogue buildings in the Harrisburg area, then there were four, finally three, and come this Saturday morning, only two buildings will be servicing the Jewish population of Harrisburg. This will happen when Kesher Israel Congregation moves into a basement room in the building occupied by Temple Chisuk Emuna Beth El on Green Street for their Saturday services. Community members are excited about the possibility of combining even more of their synagogues together, but also apprehensive about having groups from separate denominations share space together.

“We’ve been in our own buildings for so long,” Mike Cohen, a longtime member of the community said, “I just don’t know what the dynamic will be like when we’re all so close together.

But I’m excited to find out.” Others are more introspective. Sheila Brown, a recent transplant who retired to the area, noted “that in large communities, the Orthodox and the Conservative keep their distance, but this is a real opportunity for us all to unite in shared physical space.”

But the move was precipitated not by theological concerns, but by practical concerns. The synagogue buildings had gotten too large and too expensive for each congregation to maintain on their own and so sharing space was a way to cut costs. Harrisburg, like many other smaller Jewish communities, has experienced steady demographic decline over the past many decades and also has less affiliation than previous generations, hurting synagogue membership.

While JCCs and other Jewish affiliated groups have also suffered they have made up for it with local non-Jewish membership and support. For example, the new CEO of the JCC of Greater Harrisburg, Anna Strom, herself a non-Jew, is proud that nearly 85% of their members now come from the non-Jewish community. “It’s been an absolute lifesaver for us,” Ms. Strom said. Another lifesaver has been the Life and Legacy program. Started nearly 40 years ago, this program encourages people to donate to the community in their wills.

“If not for the money which continues to come in from these legacies I don’t know where we would be,” said Strom.

But the local Synagogues are more dependent on Jewish affiliation. Rabbi Joshua Berger, a Baltimore resident who comes up twice a month to run services at Kesher Israel, hopes this move will ensure an Orthodox service can continue to meet on Saturday mornings in Harrisburg for many years to come. “We owe it to our members to make sure there’s a Saturday morning service for them for decades to come,” he said. Berger, the former rabbi of an Orthodox Synagogue in Bentley, PA for 35 years before it too moved into the local JCC together with all of the other local synagogues, has seen this before. “This is what is happening in small towns throughout the country,” he says stoically, “we do our best to keep things going for as long as possible.”

working to build community together, took root, and decades later Harrisburg’s Jewish growth is testament to that.

“It was hard,” says Mike Cohen, a longtime Harrisburg resident, who was a part of that original group. “We hustled a lot in those early days. Meetings, networking, putting our heads together, it was exciting, but definitely hard work. While getting people to participate was difficult, it became clear to us that there were many Jewish families interested in relocating to Harrisburg and once the local Jewish community got on board with our efforts, it really took off.”

Sheila Brown, who recently moved in with her husband and two children who are enrolling in the local Jewish Day School, is excited to be here. “We were looking for a community to raise our kids with strong Jewish life, and had heard great things about Harrisburg.” The JCC, she says, serves as her children’s home away from home, bustling with their friends from school and the synagogue, “as well as some local non-Jewish friends, which is also wonderful.”

Harrisburg Jews have been bucking national trends, which have Jewish communities in decline, for years now, and they have started to attract national attention. The nationally renowned non-profit Small Jewish Communities Initiative (SJCI), which is based in NYC, but helps small Jewish communities around the world survive, was recently in Harrisburg to meet with local community members and gain inspiration and ideas from Harrisburg’s successes. Cohen, who met with the visitors from SJCI, says he told them it was the tenacity of those young people all those decades ago. “They got the whole town involved in rebuilding,” he remarks wistfully, “I think if people had ignored them back then this story would be very different now.”

“We are deeply indebted to them, is really all I can say,” says Rabbi Josh Berger, a Baltimore native who recently moved here with his wife and six month old son to become the new rabbi at Kesher Israel Congregation. “When we moved in we found a vibrant community, one with a strong future, and a place where we and so many other young Jewish families really feel we can settle down and enjoy a robust Jewish life.”

Postscript and back to the present: For the past few years Kesher Israel Congregation has been engaged in recruiting Jewish families to the Harrisburg community. Despite the energy and passion a few people brought to this effort, this work cannot be seen as successful, thus far. On some level this has been due to the tepid response of all but the small group currently involved in this work. At present, there are Jewish families who have expressed interest in relocating to the area but absent a community-wide push to help these families settle in the Harrisburg area, these efforts will continue to go nowhere. Welcome back to the present where we decide what 35 years in the future will look like. VERSION 2: Harrisburg Jews Celebrate Significant Milestone Harrisburg Jews have officially been here for a full 200 years, and from the looks of it they are here to stay. In 1853, the first Harrisburg area synagogue, Temple Ohev Sholom, was founded. Since then Harrisburg’s Jews have only continued to see growth and vibrancy as they have established themselves as an integral part of the Harrisburg city landscape. This coming Saturday the community’s five synagogues, which while working together are each independent entities, will celebrate a gala bicentennial, which will also serve to welcome 10 new families who have joined the Jewish community this past year.

It wasn’t always this way for Harrisburg Jews. Along with the rest of the country, Harrisburg Jewry experienced a steady decline in demographics and affiliation for a number of decades.

But over 30 years ago a visionary group of young Jews got together and encouraged the entire community to focus their energy not only on fundraising and financially securing a future which looked ever more questionable, but rather to commit energy to ensure the vitality of their community too. Their vision, which was contingent on the entire community participating and

Thomas Michael Larocque, 62, of Harrisburg, PA, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, June 7th, 2018. Born in Providence, RI, he was a son of the late Armand and Barbara (Davis) Larocque. Thomas graduated from Cranston High School East in 1975 and in 1977 graduated from Rhode Island Junior College with an Associate’s in Applied Sciences.

Thomas retired as a Maintenance Technician for the Jewish Federation of Greater Harrisburg.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 1001 and VFW Post 1718.

Thomas is survived by his daughter, Felissa Larocque; brother, Charles Larocque and wife Lorraine; sister, Teresa Bagdanovich and husband Kenneth; nieces and nephew: Kerri Towers, Denise Bagdanovich, Jill Leadbetter, and Allen Bagdanovich. He was predeceased by brother, Armand Larocque Jr.

CAROLINE LEIBMAN

Caroline J. Leibman, 80, of Doylestown, PA, passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at home. She was the wife of the late Joseph I. Leibman of Harrisburg, PA. Born November 26, 1937 in Wilkes Barre, PA, she was the daughter of the late Joseph J. Kasprinski and the late Catherine M. Bogovic Kasprinski.

A graduate of Wilkes Barre General Hospital School of Nursing. Caroline went on to graduate from Penn State University with Distinction.

She specialized in Psychiatric Nursing and was employed by the State of Pennsylvania for 25 years. She finished her career as Director for Training for Harrisburg State Hospital. Caroline was a member of Ohav Zededk Orthodox Synagogue in Wilkes Barre, PA. She is survived by her sister, Anne M. Kasprinski; sisters-in-law, Sandra Platsky, Bernice Leibman, Doris Lipman and Libby Smith. Also, she is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

DORIS TOPPER

Doris F. Topper, 94, passed away on Thursday, May 24, 2018. She was born September 23, 1923, to the late Abraham and Jennie (Blough) Freedman, in Harrisburg, PA. She was a lifetime member of Beth El Temple and was very active in the sisterhood. She was also a life member of Hadassah.

She is survived by her daughters, Sondra Topper (Jeffrey King), and Andrea Topper (Tom Breeland); her grandson, Michael (Marci) Rosenblatt; great-grandsons, Kyle and Justin Rosenblatt; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Doris is preceded in death by her husband Martin Topper, and her sisters and brothers.

Have Fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement, and activities for daily living. Hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a SilverSneakers ball are offered for resistance. A chair is available if needed for seated or standing support. SilverSneakers® CARDIOFIT –

SilverSneakers® CardioFit is an advanced group exercise class designed for active adults who desire a safe and effective low-impact cardiovascular workout. Energizing and easy-to-follow movements promote heart-healthy, total-body conditioning to increase cardiovascular and muscular endurance. In addition, a variety of strength training options are offered to provide a well-rounded workout. Mondays/Wednesdays at 10:30-11:30am. Drop-in Fee $7 per class.

SilverSneakers® YOGA –

SilverSneakers Yoga will move your whole body through a complete series of seated and standing yoga poses. Chair support is offered to safely perform a variety of seated and standing postures designed to increase flexibility, balance and range of movement. Restorative breathing exercises and final relaxation will promote stress reduction and mental clarity. Mondays and Wednesdays 11:45-12:30-45pm. Drop-in Fee $7 per class. Gentle Yoga –

The JCC Senior Adult Club is Offering the Following Senior Events: Every Tuesday and Thursday at 9:30am-10:15-30am. SilverSneakers Classic Every Tuesday from 1:30-3:00pm Mah Jongg classes with Ellen Mussaf or play Farkle with Harold Williams and Mel Krieger After Lunch Program on the FIRST and THIRD THURSDAY – Spanish Class with Cecilia Lee. Senior Lunch will be served Tuesdays and Thursdays at Noon. Reservations are preferred two days in advance if possible, but no later than 4:00pm the day before.

SilverSneakers® SPLASH–

Activate your urge for variety! Splash offers fun, shallow water movement to improve agility and flexibility while addressing cardiovascular, strength and endurance conditioning. No swimming ability is required and a SilverSneakers® kickboard or other aquatic equipment is used to improve strength, balance and coordination. Mondays/Wednesday 9:30 -10:30am.
