They helped each individual child in their loving and nurturing care grow up into outstanding citizens.

It gives us great pleasure to recognize, respect and appreciate all the valuable skills and knowledge that Jean and Corinne have imparted onto us and to thank them for all their efforts and hard work. They are the perfect duo! The children love their projects, crazy costumes and of course the Guinea pigs.

A Message from the CEO - Jennifer Ross It can be very challenging being the leader of a Jewish organization whether you are the CEO, the Board Chair, or the Rabbi. When you make a decision, it must balance the needs of the community regardless of your own personal viewpoints. This often is a struggle for me when I agree with a suggestion for something that the Community Relations Council (CRC) is asked to pursue that I know will be divisive for our community or a request is made that we simply don’t have the resources to support.

Please know that even if I am not able to implement your requests, I have appreciated the opportunity to hear from you and welcome ongoing dialog.

I respect and admire the activism and energy that I encounter in our community. I particularly enjoy when I witness people finding common ground or at least just listening to one another even if they disagree. There are many issues locally, nationally, and regarding Israel which are important to discuss, and we are so much more effective when we consider other viewpoints as well as sharing our personal convictions.

Two years ago, our CRC shared information another national association of ours, the Jewish Council on Public Affairs, launched regarding civil discourse. They state it well: “Civility is neither the lack of difference nor the squelching of debate. It is the application of care for the dignity of every human being, even those with whom we may sharply disagree.” I encourage you to learn more at http://civility.jewishpublicaffairs.org/ and review their resources page. I was pleased to see an article by Amy Eilberg whom I am excited to learn from in Harrisburg when she joins us for a joint Shabbaton at Chisuk Emuna Congregation and Beth El Temple the weekend of May 5.

I hope to see you at both synagogues for this important discussion.

We are All Made in the Image of G-d: Taking Mental Illness out of the Shadows By: Barry Stein On the evening of Thursday, May 11, 2017, Jewish Family Service of Greater Harrisburg will host a lecture by Stephen Fried, native Harrisburgian and co-author of the award-winning book “A Common Struggle” with Patrick J. Kennedy. Fried will return to Harrisburg to share his compelling message about the role of the faith community in addressing the scourge of mental illness. As Fried points out in a recent article that he wrote (9/20/16) for a weekly Jewish publication, the Forward, the consequence of mental illness “is nowhere more troubling – nor more potentially and profoundly reversible – than in our houses of worship and our faith communities.”

Ever since Stephen Fried was a boy growing up in Harrisburg, PA, he has been nagged by the memory of a Jewish teenager, who hanged himself on the morning of the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, Yom Kippur or the Day of Atonement. In the Forward article, Fried describes how on that day, as the suicide became known, it was “all anyone talked about.”

And yet in the very next sentence, Fried laments “then nobody ever talked about it again.”

In a nutshell, Stephen Fried will be discussing what he refers to as a “code of silence” in our faith communities when it comes to recognizing and addressing people living with mental illness.

Mr. Fried will not only challenge us to stop simply “… talking about

this problem,” he will issue a call for collective action to make our congregations more welcoming, supportive and inclusive to people with mental illness and their families.

In the Ethics of Our Fathers (Pirke Avot; 2:21) Rabbi Tarforn tells us “It is not your responsibility to finish the work of perfecting the world, but you are not free to desist from it either.” The challenge of reversing the ramifications of mental illness in our communities is too daunting for anyone of us to take on alone.

However, by joining arms across faith communities, our ability to transform our congregations is within our reach. Attending Stephen Fried’s lecture on May 11 is the first step in making this a reality!

From AIPAC 2017 to Yom Ha’atsma’ut By:Rabbi Elisha Friedman I experienced something at the AIPAC 2017 Policy Conference in Washington DC which I had previously only experienced in one other place on earth: in the State of Israel itself. That exhilarating feeling of Jewish destiny playing out in all its vibrancy and glory on the modern stage, in a modern economy and country, as a player on the world stage. That feeling of watching people connected by laws, mannerisms and language which bound their ancient ancestors, now living together again with high-tech computer chip companies and military jets. I get that feeling when in a place where Jews are not the minority but instead the political and cultural movers and shakers. More personally, I also get that thrill watching observant Jews wearing their piety on their sleeves, as we might say, occupying significant roles in government and business – because they are that comfortable in their cultural surroundings.

So here we were - 18,000 strong – in our nation’s capital, but some part of me felt all the above as I watched the throngs of diverse people who were attending the conference. We had gathered together to learn and lobby, to show our support for and commitment to the Jewish state and to hear from political leaders all over the spectrum of their commitment to Israel’s success and security. It is thrilling to hear as Vice President Mike Pence, Speaker Paul Ryan and Ambassador Nikki Haley amongst many other senators, congressman and other political leaders, reaffirm in the strongest of terms their devotion to Israel. It is particularly so because the background noise in my head is of so many earlier times in Jewish history when the political trends were far different.

AIPAC is unique because it is bipartisan and brings together those on every end of the spectrum. The two biggest rockstars of the conference, from what I could unscientifically deduce based on the crowds’ clapping, were liberal Brooklyn-born Jewish lawyer mastermind and Israel activist, Professor Alan Dershowitz, and the Indian-American former Republican South Carolina Governor, UN Ambassador Haley. Both are revered amongst Israel activists for the clarity and passion they bring to international discussions about Israel and the depth of their commitment to the Jewish state in tense and hostile environments. It is a wide-tent, and will hopefully stay that way.

There is also a strong educational component, and one is left wishing they could have heard so many more speakers than is possible. I am a very non-technical type. I don’t know where my water, gas, electricity, food, etc. comes from, and I largely don’t care. I’m happy in my Marxian diagnosed modern day alienation.

But I ended up attending sessions on Israel’s gas and water supply (the latter from Seth Siegel), which means I know far more about Israeli gas and water than Harrisburg’s. I also heard from some of the leading theoreticians of contemporary Zionism, like Dr. Daniel Gordis, on where they see this all headed.

Perhaps my biggest takeaway was that experience of having been deeply connected to Israel those few days. I struggle with how to stay connected to a land and a people I feel so close to while there but the memory and power of which fades under the stresses of daily life back home. With a lengthy and exhausting and costly trip separating us it is not feasible to get back there for constant short reminders and bursts of inspiration. The AIPAC conference - closer, cheaper and convenient – while not as good, helped me feel closely connected to a land I love and admire. I returned deeply inspired and uplifted.

We are coming to that time of year when we celebrate the modern State of Israel with Yom Hazikaron and Yom Ha’atsma’ut back to back and a few short weeks later Yom Yerushalyim. The first two days commemorate the establishment of Israel and mourn the precious lives which have been lost throughout her short, but bloody and often tragic history. The latter holiday celebrates the reunification of Jerusalem, 50 years ago. It’s the season when Israel is on our personal and communal minds and when we celebrate her existence.

This year our own Silver Academy is proud to be sending a large cohort of seventh and eighth graders and chaperons to Israel for the first time in their lives. What a privilege it will be to watch another generation be introduced to the miracle and the marvel that is the modern State of Israel and to watch it all from Harrisburg, when they return and tell us of their experiences. As a community, we have participated in the unfolding of this process through our support of the Silver Academy and specifically, through all the attention that has been given to this particular program. When we watch these young people solidify their years of Jewish education by visiting our autonomous homeland, it seems like an opportune moment to recommit ourselves, financially and with our children, to ensuring this process never ceases to happen in Central PA.

Catching up with Classmates: Lisa Isaacman Micley Lisa Isaacman Micley is currently the Program Director of the Online Judaic Studies Consortium (OJSC). She has been in the field of Jewish education for more than forty years. The OJSC is an AVI CHAI funded project which works collaboratively with Jewish day schools across North America to build and facilitate online Judaic studies courses for students in Grades 8-12. Lisa would be delighted to welcome students and teachers from the Silver Academy into the OJSC. Please be in touch with her if you would like to learn more about this program. (lmicley@vhslearning.org) Lisa has visited Silver Academy since her graduation several times in various Jewish education roles. She enjoyed seeing the students studying Hebrew using the Tal AM program on a visit several years ago to the school. Many things looked the same to her and many things have changed since her graduation from the Yeshiva Academy (as it was called then) in 1969.

After graduation fromYA, Lisa attended William Penn High School for one year and then Susquehanna Township High School. She studied at Columbia University and the Jewish Theological Seminary and did a master’s in education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Lisa taught Talmud and worked with teachers in a pedagogic center at the Solomon Schechter School of Greater Boston for 28 years.

Lisa lives in Newton Center, MA where she raised three sons, Jeremy, David and Joshua, with her husband, Bruce. All of her sons are grown and doing interesting things. Jeremy is in the start- up world, David directs the Tamid Summer Fellowship in Israel and Joshua teaches history in a high school in Brooklyn.

Lisa has many pleasant silver academy memories. Most of them center around the wonderful teachers she had at the school- who may have been the reason she chose to make a career in Jewish education.

The Community Gathered to Honor Hebrew High Graduates The 2017 class of Hebrew High held its graduation ceremony on Sunday evening, April 2. The graduates included: Richie Kass, Chisuk Emuna Congregation; Ben Loux, Beth El Temple; Ian Rosen, Beth El Temple; and Lincoln Weinstock, Beth El Temple. The students each shared reflections on a person, place, event, or experience that had made a significant impact upon their connection to Judaism.

In addition to the students’ participation, included in the ceremony were remarks from Rabbi Cytryn, Rabbi Kessler, Rabbi Muroff, Harvey Freedenberg, Board Chair of the Jewish Federation of Greater Harrisburg; Jennifer Ross, President and CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Harrisburg; and Lillian Rappaport, Hebrew High director.

After a four month hiatus (November, December, January and February) finally March comes and brings with it, the first of eight super shows of our season. A few weeks ago Cheryl took a busload of us to see Beauty and the Beast at Toby’s Dinner theatre in Columbia, Maryland. There was nothing but rave reviews for the show. Many of us had seen it on Broadway and at Hershey.

The consensus of opinion was that this production ranked right up there. Now we are looking forward to seeing My Fair Lady on April 26 at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre.

We’ve all heard about the benefits of getting regular exercise…weight management, better mobility, flexibility and balance, improved sleep, heightened immune function, increased circulation leading to enhanced cognitive functioning and better digestion, reduced depression and anxiety, just to name a few. But what if you have been inactive for a long period of time and/or are having health issues? Is it even safe for older adults to exercise? The answer is a resounding YES! First things first, have a conversation with your doctor about starting an exercise program to find out if there are any types of activities you should avoid. I have yet to

run into a doctor who doesn’t think that some type of exercise would be beneficial for their patient.

After you get the go ahead, then comes the fun part, deciding how to get moving.

So what are your options? There are many great choices for older adults to increase activity and get exercise. Some Medicare Advantage plans offer the SilverSneakers™ option, which gives you free basic memberships to participating gyms. Some Medigap programs may offer gym reimbursement as well. Gyms offer group fitness programs, sometimes specifically for older adults, that can be fun and motivating. Gyms also often offer walking tracks and fitness equipment for weight training.

If going to a gym is not your thing, there are plenty of other options. Dance classes, yoga, swimming, walking, and gentle hiking are all enjoyable ways to get you moving. Riverfront Park in Harrisburg is a great way to get fresh air and enjoy the scenery while also getting fit and heathy.

So remember, it doesn’t matter how you do it (as long as your doctor approves) as long as you move your body. The benefits are endless, and with the warming weather now is a great time to get started.

Start slow, do it regularly, and make it a priority to get the full benefits an active life has to offer.

Freedom Seder at Beth El Temple Focuses on Immigrants, Inclusion By: Mary Klaus A small sign with a big message drew the attention of 100 guests walking into the sixth annual Freedom Seder in Beth El Temple’s Rosen Sisterhood Hall.

“My people were refugees too,” read the sign and the message that reverberated throughout the two-hour Seder sponsored by Beth El Temple, the Interdenominational Ministers Conference, Rabbinic Advisory Board of Greater Harrisburg, Ahmadiyya Muslim Community and Religion and Society Center.

Using the themes “we are all children of immigrants” and “welcoming the stranger in an unwelcoming world,” the Seder celebrated Passover as a festival of freedom. The Interdenominational Ministers Conference Citywide Revival Choir led the group in singing freedom songs.

Freedom Seders date to April 4, 1969, the first anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King and the third night of Passover that year. Freedom Seders inspire Jews, African Americans and others to reflect on the meaning of freedom of slavery from Biblical days to the present day. They also focus on Passover, the eight-day celebration commemorating the exodus of the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt.

“This Seder shows the solidarity and common ground among us,” said Rabbi Eric Cytryn, spiritual leader of Beth El Temple. “Other than Native Americans, we are all immigrants. Many of our ancestors were refugees who came here to escape prosecution. It’s better to come voluntarily and be welcomed than to come on a slave ship. We’re still fighting battles against discrimination.”

The Rev. Earl Harris, pastor of St. Paul Baptist Church, called love a “powerful spiritual force.” Harris, who describes himself as “a product of the civil rights movement” dating to 1964, said that Martin Luther King’s teaching about love and forgiveness was more powerful than a tactic.

“Love is defined as God,” he said. Harris cited several Biblical verses calling on people to welcome strangers and be kind to them.

The Seder began with the reading of a special Haggadah, a booklet detailing the Passover story as it pertained to the Freedom Seder theme. Guests took turns doing the readings.

“Each one of us was once a stranger, helpless and homeless in this world,” read one narrator “Now, we are obligated to help others feel at home. The slavery and the Exodus were not one-time occurrences.

They happen in every generation.”

The Freedom Seder included such touches as Kiddush, the blessing of the wine (which was grape juice); a Hebrew Shehechianu prayer of gratitude; the breaking of the middle matzah to remind guests that slaves considered a whole loaf of bread an unheard luxury, and the asking of both traditional and non-traditional Seder questions.

Cytryn said that the Torah “commands us 36 times to welcome the refugee, the immigrant and the stranger into our community because when we were strangers in a strange land, we were mistreated, abused and enslaved. Harris said that scripture is clear about treating strangers kindly. He lamented that many of today’s policies toward immigrants “are rooted in fear.”

Mohammad Sarjeel Sufiullah said that the Quran tells people to “go the extra mile to help your immigrant brother.”

During the readings, the audience remembered the 10 plagues that afflicted the Egyptians. They looked at modern plagues; learned about the significance of such Passover foods as a shank bone, matzah, maror and charoset; and heard from Farzana Safiullah and Natalie Klugavin about their own experiences as immigrants.

“America is my home for better or for worse,” declared Safiullah, who emigrated here from an Asian country. “My American identity was cemented on 9-11.”

Between readings, the IMC Citywide Revival Choir led spirited renditions of “Let My People Go,” “Oh, Freedom,” “Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around,” “We Shall Overcome” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Jews, Christians, and Muslims sat together and sang together.

The Seder meal included salmon, potato kugel, broccoli kugel, roasted vegetables with orzo, green salad, cake, macaroons, coffee and tea.

“Many people of faith and many people of doubt believe we must work together to make redemption possible,” Cytryn said. He spoke of the need for “each of us to be blessed with wisdom and soul strength to embrace our commonality as we work to establish a world where dignity, respect and honor are visible in all our interactions.”

Cow Pies By: Lynne Leis These oatmeal raisin cookies are my husband’s favorite. This recipe was given to me by our neighbor when my husband was in medical school in Philly. The term “cow pies” came into being because our neighbor did all free style recipes, and nothing delicate. These are just plopped onto the cookie sheet in big blobs, very much like their namesake.

When our girls were young, they would try to “sneak” a cookie or two. Because of the raisins, oatmeal, wheat germ, whole wheat flour, and minimal sugar, I didn’t mind if they had a couple of cookies as they ran out the door for the bus. I knew that they were getting something nutritious, and they thought that they were getting away with something! They “discovered” how little sugar there is in the recipe only recently, to their great dismay. My husband still asks for these cookies and has been known to drive over to our daughter’s house when a cell phone picture shows a fresh batch of cookies in the oven.

Ingredients: 1 cup raisins 1 cup water 2 eggs 2/3 cup shortening or melted margarine ½ cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 teaspoon salt 2 ½ cups of flour (or 2 ¼ cups flour + ¼ cup wheat germ) 1 teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon cinnamon ½ teaspoon ground cloves 2 cups oats Instructions: 1. Cook raisins in water until soft.

2. Add other ingredients.

3. Mix with wooden spoon 4. “Plop” on cookie sheet.

5. Bake at 400F for 8-10 minutes.

6. Yield: about 18 large cookies (cow pies) or 3-5 dozen normal-sized ones.

Silver Stars: Accomplishments of our Students

Book Review Presented by Author, Sherry V. Ostroff

By: Adam Grobman, Susan Gaughan, and Gail Rebuck The students of The Silver Academy have had so many recent accomplishments that we’d like to take the opportunity to congratulate them on their efforts.

The Silver Academy students recently participated in the 60th annual Capital Area Science and Engineering Fair. The Silver Academy had three students representing our school out of the 360 participants from the capital area. Samuel Schvartsman, Alana Reid, and Chaim Bell all won 2nd place prizes for their projects! Alana was also selected to participate in the PA BioGENEius 2017 Challenge, a science competition to display innovative and original science research projects in Biotechnology that is held at Harrisburg University. Chaim also received the Junior Division Awards for Chemistry and Statistics, which were presented by national associations in their respective fields!

Alana Reid, an eighth grader at The Silver Academy, was the first place winner of the Schwab Holocaust Essay Contest! The contest is sponsored by the Schwab Holocaust Education Fund of the Jewish Federation of Greater Harrisburg, and was open to Central Pennsylvania students in 8th through 12th grades. Alana received the first place prize of $500.00. This year’s topic was: How can individuals and societies remember and commemorate difficult histories like the Holocaust? What is the purpose of remembering? What are the consequences of forgetting?

In addition to our student’s academic achievements, we were also proud of our students who performed in the JCC Drama Department’s production of The Lion King. Mazel Tov to Yaakov Reid, Orit Lieferman, Mikel Garner, Alana Reid, and Ariella Jackson for their wonderful performances in the show.

Our students celebrated Passover by performing in Model Seders throughout the JCC building. Their hard work to create, contribute, and collaborate throughout the Seders should be commended and honored.

Congratulations to all of our students who continue to make us proud through their academic achievements and contributions to the community!

Our after lunch program on May 11 will be a very interesting book review of The Lucky One by the book’s author, Sherry Ostroff. The book discusses the family of Sherry’s mother, Ita and their flight from persecution in Russia in the early 1900’s to the united states.

Vogelman (Originally published in The FORTNIGHTLY) Israel to be the Fourth Country to Land a Vehicle on the Moon Israel is scheduled to become the fourth country to land a spacecraft on the moon, with a launch planned for the end of 2017 by SpaceX. The scheduled launch is also set to send several satellites into space, but the Israeli spacecraft is the only one designed to continue to the moon. The dishwasher-sized spacecraft was built by the Israeli SpaceIL. After landing on the moon, the spacecraft is expected to take photos and videos of the moon and broadcast them to Earth. The spacecraft is designed to travel 500 yards across the surface of the moon by hopping, instead of roving like other spacecraft in the competition.

Miriam Wernick Jacobs, 97, of Atlanta, passed away April 6.

Beloved mother to Marcia, Francine and Steven; in-laws Barry and Joan; grandmother to Brandon, Gabriel, Jessica, Benjamin, Noah; great-grandmother to Molly, Jake, Aaron, Adam, Eli, Jack, Lucy. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Albert, of blessed memory. She was much appreciated and will be much missed.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hadassah, Weinstein Hospice, or Congregation Shearith Israel. A Graveside service was held at Crest Lawn Memorial Park on April 9 with Rabbi Ari Kaiman officiating.

PAUL LANDERSMAN

Paul David Landersman, 90, of Harrisburg passed away at the HCP Carolyn’s House, on March 30. Paul was born on March 26, 1927, in Brooklyn, NY to Nathan and Bessie (Dunn) Landersman.

During WWII Paul served in Italy as a Master Sergeant in the US Army. After the war, he graduated from NYU and The RCA institute at Columbia University as a Radio Engineer. In 1954, he married Jane, his wife of 63 years. In the 1950’s, he was a popular Harrisburg rockand-roll DJ known as “Big Daddy.” Later in life he and Jane became antique dealers and he served as President of both the Central PA Regional Antique Dealers Association, and Pennsylvania Antique Dealers Association. He was a loving husband, father and proud grandfather. An avid golfer, he enjoyed classic cars and spending time in his workshop where he could always be found fixing things.

Paul is survived by his loving wife, Jane (Stein); son, Stephen Landersman; daughter, Myra Landersman Wood, granddaughter, Natalie; sister-in-law, Harriett Kopp; brother-in-law, Bernard Stein; and many nieces and nephews.

His funeral service was held April 2 in the Bookstaber Chapel at the Mt. Moriah Cemetery with Rabbi Peter Kessler officiating. Burial in Mt. Moriah Cemetery followed.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions be made to Hospice of Central PA, Carolyn’s House.

RUSSELL WHITESEL

Russ Whitesel, 73, passed away on April 2 at Agrace Hospice.

After graduating from Northern Illinois University, Russ enlisted in the Peace Corps and served in Turkey. He then received his Master’s in Public Administration from the University of Syracuse Maxwell School, and moved to Madison for a job with the Department of Administration. After he retired, he developed and taught the Government and Administrative Law Clinic at UW Law School, where he trained second- and third-year law students to be compassionate and thoughtful lawyers and policy-makers through clinical placements in state administrative agencies.

Russ was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, never missing a concert or game. He had a knack for making all activities fun, whether coaching youth soccer or drilling Spanish vocabulary words. He made many contributions to his community. He was especially proud of the month he spent with the Peace Corps Veterans volunteering in Louisiana as part of the post-Katrina recovery effort. In his leisure time, he enjoyed fantasy baseball, bridge, two book clubs, biking, running, and traveling with his family.

A funeral was held at Temple Beth El, 2702 Arbor Drive, Madison on April 6. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Agrace Hospice, Jewish Social Services, or the Southern Poverty Law Center.

M. Rick Sykes, 62, formerly of Harrisburg, passed away November 5, 2016 in Waverly Hall, GA. Relatives and friends were invited to attend a Graveside Memorial Service Sunday April 9, 2017 at Mt. Moriah Cemetery with Rabbi Peter Kessler, officiating.
