I see myself as a clay artist, printmaker, and three‐dimensional designer. Artist Statement My over‐arching artistic goal is to produce a body of work reflective of the diversity of my research h interests, aesthetic h sensibilities, bl and d personall experiences. I seekk to ffulfill lf ll this goal through the selection of materials and themes. In choosing materials, I am fond of items that can be re‐envisioned to become more than the purpose(s) for which they were created. Texture and color, respectively, are especially important to me in choosing fibers, embellishments, and other materials. Contrasting textures explore ideas about interconnectivity difference, interconnectivity, difference and harmony. harmony An interdisciplinary approach to themes of globalization, gender, identity, visual culture, and appearance serve as a point of departure for my creative endeavors. My desire to embed personal narratives in each piece I create continuously inspires me to discover new materials and techniques that will allow me to share my voice in a global context.

Voice We all have a need to express ourselves and we do so in a variety of ways. When words seemed to block my ability to communicate, expressing my feelings through clay was and continues to be an effective communicator. communicator

Ceramics

When I struggled with my dual heritages, during my twenties, the resolutions came through my work after a physical pilgrimage to the motherland. The sojourn brought clarity to way I looked at my cultural self and the way I looked at my western training in clay.

There was a global realization that I was NOT a “minority” minority in the world, just in America. Working in the traditional village, using centuries‐old techniques, showed me that you could add dissimilar moisture clays together and they would actually survive the fire and not crack.

African American Women Series

When h I wanted d the h world ld to know k about b the h pain i off segregation; i apartheid; racism; genital mutilation and ‐ the inequities of being an African in and out of America; a woman of color; an outspoken critic of administrative policies ‐ I spoke, I screamed through the clay.

My voice was heard.

What does my work change?

It changes me.

It confronts while it upholds.

It communicates pain as well as joy.

Reflections on the B.R.E.W. Experience…

B l Beverly…

The B.R.E.W. Collaborative was an opportunity for me to sharpen my craft, to challenge my creative intellect, to learn how to play with others, to be committed and follow through with an end product we can all be proud of. I have to admit some spirited competition was also part of the engagement in that I wanted to be sure the quality of my contribution was at least on par with my colleagues. Perhaps the most difficult thing to cope with was relinquishing my work and agonizing over the final result.

Communication was also important, how ever brief, to maintain the conduit for creative dialog amongst everyone. I also learned commitment does not happen without prioritizing what's important to you. Personal responsibilities and obligations for work and life were often neglected for the greater good.

Knowing all of this going into the project did not prepare me for the impact this experience would have on me as an artist. Over the years, my work has developed a sensibility towards texture and detail. No matter what the subject, I’ve always made an effort to exploit the characteristics by emphasizing tactile quality of the components within the composition.

In working with Dr. Stevens, I became knowledgeable of fabrics, weave patterns and imaging on fabric. As a result, my personal work has exploded into the Nature’s Avatar series combining my knowledge of landscape scenery with weave of cloth and textile design; easily a three year process that evolved in 9 months.

Engaging with Professor Pointer has revealed his wealth of endless creative inspiration. I realize now there is more to ceramics then just clay pottery.

Professor Owens‐Hart who outranks us all is not easily swayed by conversation. Her pursuit of scholarly work over the years has awarded her with acclaim and respect within her field. field It would take something very special to gain her support and participation. participation She has willingly expressed her enthusiasm about this project and has already envisioned the next B.R.E.W. exhibition.

A lot has transpired since the completion of this venture and we all have learned there are endless possibilities when creative minds come together. No doubt the expectations are high for the next collaboration and I look forward to the results. ‐ Ronald Beverly 48

R i ld Reginald…

What is this brew collaborative anyway?

If truly defined via the dictionary, one might find this simple basic explanation: “brew (broo) v.t. 1, produce by fermenting grains, as ale. 2, steep, as tea. –n. the beverage so produced.”

Clearly this artwork /idea was allowed to ferment & steep. It then became the pieces you now see having been produced.

This whole experience has been more than that for me & all of that for me. Combining different energies and producing this body of work has allow me to grow artistically. I have found a synergy that somehow has developed through this intermingling & fermentation of thoughts, medium, and process. All of this could have only occurred had it not been for strong t artist ti t with ith vision i i and d conviction i ti to t sett aside id any differences diff and d workk with ith common interest i t t and d egos restrained. t i d I am proud of the results and look forward to future collaborative efforts with unexpected discoveries to be both welcomed and embraced.

Beverly s photos are BOLD and expressive, Beverly's expressive Reggie's RAKU may make you think he's obsessive, Elka can sew together fabrics so ELEGANT, And Winnie's traditional pots are WONDERFUL and relevant.

Elka…

Elk I have always been excited about the possibilities for collaboration within the Department of Art. It was an easy decision.

It just made sense.

Upon reflection, the journey to B.R.E.W. began with “R.E.” My first collaboration was with Reggie. He graciously allowed one of my students to create a visual display in the display case on the second floor. He offered a thoughtful critique of the finished case and we shared some ideas about projects for my Visual Merchandising course and his Three‐Dimensional Concepts course.

In my second year, Winnie and I created “W.E.” My students in my Fashion Entrepreneurship course embarked upon a project in which they used clay to brand their proposed businesses. (My students are still afraid of you!) I gave a lecture to Winnie’s Ceramics II course on a recent trip to China during which I visited the UNESCO World Heritage site, Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor, Emperor home of the Terracotta Warriors, Warriors located in Lintong County, County Shaanxi Province Province. We soon began discussing our fashionable clay project. (I don’t care how much it weighs…No clay on cloth, Winnie! LOL!) Also in my second year, Ronald joined the faculty. About a day after his arrival, I introduced myself and asked, “Do you shoot fashion?” Although his initial response was a simple, “No,” after a few more questions, I was certain that we could collaborate on something. After all, everything is textiles, right?! Plus, I had a vision for how I wanted my designs presented and Ronald took pictures of people in clothes. From designing technical materials to working on on‐location shoots to creating “Beverly Stevens” bags, the “B.E.” came into B.E.ing.

Although the B.R.E.W. B R E W embodies the creative spirit in each one of us, us the outcome is much bigger than the sum of its parts parts.

Faculty exhibitions will never be the same. Our collaboration has even inspired our students. I will never approach the creative process in the same manner either. It is with great appreciation and anticipation that I look forward to the next chapter of the B.R.E.W! ‐ Elka M. Stevens 50

Wi i Winnie…

What is B.R.E.W.ing with Winnie?

Long before the BREW Collective there was a connection between the members.

Elka and I had two great ideas ‐ branding and a ceramic dress.

The Branding experiment was a trial with one of her classes. The cross‐pollination of clay and fashion has resulted in some great ceramic creations by fashion majors some trying a ceramics course.

Our clay and fiber concept is a work in progress bordered by sketches of our individual concepts integrated and then the work. I am learning about fashion and Elka about clay. What is most exciting are the reactions by the students seeing us talk and being excited about what we are doing. It is a normal occurrence for any one of us to be in one another's teaching space. I am as excited about the possibilities within fashion as I am about photography as more than a recording device.

We are constantly l b bouncing ideas d off ff off one another h via e‐mails l or hall h ll and d studio/classrooms d / l pushing h the h concepts more and more with each contact. The students are observing what can happen when creative ideas go beyond superficial material and technical boundaries.
