Our Aim The Photonics Explorer: Intra-curricular optics kit to engage, excite and educate students

Goal: To raise the interest of young people for STEM ďƒ„More students and later more skilled workforce in the field

Method: Supporting teachers with educational material in conjunction with teacher training courses Enhancing and complementing existing school curricula

tailored to target groups Group 1: 13 - 15years

Group 2: 16 – 18 years

Is taught science mainly in interdisciplinary courses

Is taught physics in specialized, often more intense courses

Has little to no background in physics, the scientific approach and conducting experiments

Knows usually about waves, electricity, magnesium, and Bohrs atomic model

Will decide soon for or against specializing in science subjects

Will decide soon for a career path

Should experience hands-on the fun and fascination of scientific discovery

Should know about the importance of photonics in society and current developments in the field

Especially girls need to gain more self-confidence in scientific matters

Clearly see that they can partake in shaping this key technology for the future

why a non-profit organization ?

A NPO has been created in order to assure:

the mission The mission of the NPO is to raise the interest in science and engineering among young people from primary and secondary education through the creation and dissemination of educational programs, mainly to schools.

• The association will be pursuing this goal in a non for profit way in the sense that these educational programs will be made available for free to schools, teachers and pupils. • It may also execute all activities that can promote this goal. It may in that sense, but only incidentally, perform commercial activities as long the revenues are spent to support the purpose for which it was founded.

first educational program In the first phase, the activities of EYEST are focused on the production and dissemination of the Photonics Explorer kit to school teachers in Europe.

Manufacturing of the kits: - Production in sheltered work places

Distribution: - Decentralized distribution using Local Associated Partners (LAP) - First using existing networks (testing countries) - Expansion based on existing languages, interest and funding

Teacher training: - Representatives of the LAPs receive one-day introduction workshop about the content of the kit and EYESTvzw.

- Teacher training always done by local professionals

Dissemination and Communication - intensive dissemination through general media to ensure a permanent visibility - internet based community platform for student, teacher and parent interaction
